I'v been trying to verify the existence of this show, but can only find brief mentions in a handful of forum posts. As it is stated that the show airs on Disney Channel India, and that there have been 50 episodes, I would think finding sources would be easy ... but I'm stumped. Maybe there's a language issue. Can anyone shed some light? Any help very much appreciated. Thanks, 66.57.4.17 (talk) 12:59, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Try searching "Kaarthika" or "Karthika", mentioned in these articles (sometimes near the bottom of the article):[1][2][3][4][5]. Priyanath talk 14:56, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Images on West Bengal

Well, I would like to bring everyone's notice to the fact that User:Nikkul has replaced all images today, after it was featured on Main page. I find it very atrocious that he removed even the image that appears on Main page today and it was added by User:Nichalp. I am really getting fed up with this guy's continuous efforts to push images taken/uploaded by him to all important articles on India topics. Can someone do something about this? Other than these image games, he has nothing else to offer.--GDibyendu (talk) 12:30, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

If images were replaced without there being any consensus, these edits should be reversed. Mass, undiscussed changes to FA-class affects the stability of the article (prerequisite 1(e) of WP:FACR), so users are well within their rights to take issue with such changes. Indianexpress.com

In speedy deletion work, I run across a fair number of db-notability (A7) candidates where the only arguably reliable source is indianexpress.com ... for instance, this for IndiaHotelReview. What weight should I give to this source? - Dank (push to talk) 14:25, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Indian Express is one of South India's oldest and most circulated newspapers, so as a source it is reliable. However, like most major newspapers today, the Indian Express also hosts bloggers and freelance writers, so you'll still need to evaluate the content of the reliability/accuracy. Are you trying to say that attack is very normal and the protests in 2009 is what made the event special? Could be, given that there were 1500 attacks on people of Indian origin in the state of Victoria in 2007-2008, as noted in the article.--GDibyendu (talk) 13:42, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Why would I think the attacks are very normal? They obviously aren't and are disgraceful, although I don't agree with some of the protesters behaviour. Aaroncrick(Tassie Boy talk) 00:46, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Most things that are minority occurrences are still not notable, because only a small minority of people are victims of serious assault, murder etc still. Still, police in western countries (US aside) have little power in day-to-day control, unlike in Asian countries where police can just execute gangsters or accidentally run them over in a car crash. In many rough areas of the cities, the street gangs, some criminal/drug dealers, some just angry groups of vandals. In Lakemba, New South Wales near Harris Park, in 1999 (I think), the police station was shot into with automatic weapons by gangsters; it's the busiest police station in NSW. The suburb is the location of the Lakemba Mosque, the home of Taj El-Din Hilaly, a famous Islamist cleric, and the venue was used to organise machetes for riots. Also, the police once tried to question Hilaly about him driving an unregistered car, and his disciples came along and tried to beat them up. Needless to say, in Lakemba, that's the norm; if a police patrol with 2-3 (seomtimes female) officers with a small pistol, try to arrest a gangster etc, in 5 minutes, 30 gangsters will turn up in broad daylight and fight them, make death/rape threats against them etc. That's the norm unfortunately and everyone victim of crime has to take it. May I suggest that any further discussion on this topic should be carried out on the article's talk page and not here. Else, we will end up with multiple threads fo discussion. --Deepak D'Souza 05:02, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject India Newsletter – June 2009

Draft moved
to this page.

I saw that the last newsletter was written a year ago, so I decided to start a new one (above, admittedly a bit unconventional, but I like it =D). Do you think it is worth continuing the newsletter from time to time, or was the June 2008 newsletter the last one)? If the consensus is "yes" for the first question, I'd appreciate if you improved the draft and added something noteworthy that has happened in the past month or year. :) Thanks, [sd] 01:31, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Sd, thanks for the effort on the newsletter and yes, it is worth continuing. I found your format intresting. I would suggest creating this under the WikiProject India/Outreach/Newsletter page and linking it here, that way the newsletters are located at one place. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 23:10, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I updated some things and used the old format – it looks better now. =) As I said before, I'd appreciate if you (anyone) improved the draft and added something noteworthy that has happened in the past month or even year, if we decide to send it out. Cheers, [sd] 04:38, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Leave me a note when the Newsletter is ready. I will drop them at the user talk pages with TinucherianBot (talk · contribs · count) -- Tinu Cherian - 05:24, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Could an administrator do the following tasks (if there is no objection)?

  • Delete Opt out – not necessary, because we only send the newsletter to those who list their names here and here.
  • Delete Subscribers – not necessary; we already have the pages linked to above. Edited only once 2 years 7 months ago.
  • Delete July 2008 – redirects to a personal sandbox; I believe the edition was never written.
  • Delete Current – not used. We already have Current Edition, which redirects to the newest version.

Thanks, [sd] 02:15, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

checkY Done partially. I left the opt-out list as is. It is good to have a page for that...it could be useful in the future. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:11, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Opt out is neccasary. One example is that when we occasionally add new editors who have joined the project recently( and likely not aware of the newsletter) to the Delivery list ,Opt out page is compared then to verify whether they have explicitly asked for NO delivery -- Tinu Cherian - 03:19, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Working : I will be delivering the newsletter today to the talk pages...please poke me before noon IST today if you intent to make any changes-- Tinu Cherian - 03:20, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the rationale for keeping the Opt out page – I understand now. Instead of making the opt-out message so prominent for readers who do want to be on the list, can we add it instead below the newsletter, next to the bot message?

Lead probably needs expansion. Also 2008 Summer Olympics is a solid B-class article which could in the near future become a GA. Even though the Olympics is a different event, it has it's similarities with the 2003 Afro-Asian Games. Maybe the Olympic art could be used to help with organisation. Dear Friends,

A comprehensive article on 'Goa Comunidades' is ready. Either 'Goa Comunidades' have to be shown as separate territory of India, or integrated in WP:Goa since it is a major independent region within the Indian Subcontinent, illegally controlled by State of Goa. Also kindly clear the mess on WP:Goa by making appropriate corrections, mainly the Geographical area and Population. Kindly go through the discussion: [6] --Gaunkars of Goa (talk) 13:11, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

The Communidade is a social structure. It does not constitute an administrative territory such as a state or district. In order to be displayed as a seperate "territory" in India there has to be a specific law in the Indian costitution saying so. Hence the comminidade cannot be considered to be a territory. For the second part of your message , you should discuss it on the talk page of the Wikiproject. Please do not use the talk page of one article to discuss about another article. --Deepak D'Souza 14:15, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Deepak, I don't want to start the discussion all over again. Kindly refer to the same discussion. You will gain ample knowledge about Comunidades and it's legal structure.--Gaunkars of Goa (talk) 16:02, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Good, me neither. And you have probably realized that this discussion is not going to end up anywhere either. Please see No Original research --Deepak D'Souza 18:00, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Deepak, You didn't get the point at all, I am damn sure you havn't gone through the discussion, and I further presume you know very little. Before you continue here I suggest you first get right all data on WP:Goa. Why the hell is WP:Goa created without any concrete basis? Can you provide me the legal resources and references?
Kindly find out the following - it's important and urgent to clear the mess on WP:Goa before you create further disaster. For your kind information the 'State of Goa' neither has legal foundation nor has any land of it's own.
To form any State, following have to be taken into consideration;
(i)Self-Determination of the peoples - the natives decide what they want (as per UN Declarations). The Comunidades were never a party (were never involved/consulted) to the State formation, hence Comunidades are not part of the State. The State/Constitution should have adequate representations of it's native peoples. There is no representation of the Comunidades.
ii)Customary Laws - Ensure that no Customary Laws exists in the territory. The Laws of Comunidades and it's Administration were already in existence. Hence no new Constitution can supercede the existing Laws as per the Constitution.
iii)State Land Tenure Contract - This is a Constitutional obligation for formation of a new State. The State cannot be Constituted as revenue State without signing such contracts with the native peolpes. Only such contracts confer land proprietorship rights to the State. Comunidades are absolute owners of their lands and no Constitution can change their ownership rights.
iv) Sovereignty - Sovereignty has to be claimed by nations on territories prior to integration. Neither Portugual nor India could establish Sovereignity on Goa. The Sovereignty lie with the Comunidades and the natives since they were existing as independent much before the formation of the Indian Republic and the Portugal conquest. Portugal only offered Administrative tutelage to Goa Comunidades as per the treaty signed between them.
Additionally, if the Constitution fails to recognise (represent) the aboriginals/native peoples living within it's territories (i.e. no specific law in the Indian constitution which say so) then it obviously cannot lay any claims on such territories and the peoples and their territories automatically become completely independent (refer UN Declarations)
my dear friend, the only options you have are the following:
1.Show Comunidades as separate territory of India (Other territories)- which calls for a separate page, or;
2.Integrate the article on Comunidades within WP:Goa with clear demarcations between the geographical areas of the Comunidades and The State, with other distinctions.--Gaunkars of Goa (talk) 17:20, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Is this a joke ? Comunidades of Bangalore is under my jurisdication and Comunidades of New Delhi have no control over "my territory" and "my people" :) -- Tinu Cherian - 18:23, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
I don't need to go through the discussion because I have been following your "Communidades are an independent territory" bit all over Wikipedia and can assure you that you haven't understood how Wikipedia works. Wikipedia articels are built on reliable references and verifiable research. You can keep ranting about how the State of Goa is illegal but you dont have a single reference to back it up. Nothing except for your own "research". You have an overtly glorified view of the legality of the ganvkaari system and some really crazy imagination about its recognizability as an independent territory. But unfortunately it only exists in your own mind. Pity none of the great leaders of the world see the light :-). Let me ask you a simple question: Does the U.N recognize the state of Goa as illegal?. If yes , please let us know the charter number/resolution etc. If you cant , please don't bother to post long winding messages. --Deepak D'Souza 18:32, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Deepak is right, GoG. Where we left this last time was asking you to provide sources which are reliable, which explicitly and unambiguously state that the Comunidades are not part of the territory of the current Indian state of Goa, and which are of sufficient quality and sufficiently mainstream as to make it clear that this is not a fringe theory. In the absence of sources which say that, your theories are - for the purpose of Wikipedia's policies - clearly synthesis, possibly original research.
Note that we're not debating the question of whether your theory has any legal basis or not. Wikipedia isn't the place for those debates, the courts of India are. As someone who's ideologically committed to the idea of village swaraj, I have some sympathy with the idea of re-empowering the Gaunkaris, but my views as to how things should be - and, for that matter, the views the Association of Componentes of Comunidades about how things are - are irrelevant as far as Wikipedia is concerned. From Wikipedia's point of view, what you need are reliable secondary sources which say in express terms that in law, the Comunidades are not part of the current territory of the State of Goa, and which make it clear that this is a mainstream view. That's the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia. -- Arvind (talk) 18:44, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Dear Friends, Half knowledge is dangerous. Why do you guys comment even before you get to the facts? You will allow any garbage to be published on WP, without checking ground facts, and you don't wan't any objections on it? Is that how wikipedia works? I am trying to point out to you about the gross errors that you have committed on WP:Goa which needs to be rectified immediately. I have said several times that I am not at all interested to prove or publish any illegalities here. It is you who have to find out before you post anything on WP. My duty is to object to all wrong content.
And may I ask if you are sleeping with all the references/resources provided? Have you checked all Government declarations, esp. DIPLOMA LEGISLATIVO 1961? That answers all your questions. If not, I suggest all of you to take the first flight to Goa and find out the ground realities before you sit and only edit stuffs without adequate knowledge. Ask the State of it's legal position (for your kind information The 'State of Goa' has no land to stand) and thereafter continue to discuss here. Till then mark the Geographical area (territory) of Goa as questionable.--Gaunkars of Goa (talk) 15:24, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Please read WP:Synthesis. Let me explain. we need reliable extraordinary references which call "Goa Communidae is a separate territory unrelated to Goa (let us call it Z for the sake of argument)". Nothing less and nothing more. If you are using fact X and another fact Y and arrive at argument Z and force us to include Z in wikipedia, we unfortunatley couldnt as it violates WP:Synthesis policy. Go to Indian courts or protest or do whatever for the Indian Government to consider this issue and therefore amend the constitution to recognise Z and then subsequently let the media write about it and we will have no problem in including it. good luck. --Like I Care 15:37, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

shocked, surprised and everything. appears to have planned it for a while. makes "believing" diffcult. Paid editing seems to be totally at odds with the fundamental idea of wikipedia (atleast WP:COI) itself. Interestingly, it has set off a big debate. who knows, it may even become an accepted policy in future. I have a feeling that people having power may actually not mind wikipedia going in that direction fearing the current volunteer based format may not sustain for a long time. --Like I Care 05:04, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

I somehow (perhaps wrongly) assumed that all the regular editors were already aware of this. For the background, see the posts at Jimbo's talk page archive, the heated RFC it engendered and the continuing discussion at Talk:Jimbo Wales etc about the advisability of permitting such editing. Sad all around. Abecedare (talk) 05:08, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

heated is an understatment. Going thorugh the long discuusion it seems that both sides have equal supporters. Jimbo has opposed paid editing. And YellowMonkey has rigthly pointed out that with Paid editing NPOV will go straight out of the window. This is going to see some tough decision making. The worst part is that media and newspapers which have been at the receiving end for lifting content from Wikipedia will surely hype this issue in order to get back at Wikipedia. --Deepak D'Souza 05:39, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, I know one Indian paper doesn't care. I think most newspapers are bored of Wikipedia. Anyway the article that I was referring to on the RfC is on AFD and almost everyone wants to delete it. Also if you look at User talk:Zithan, you'll see that Tinu gave the sock a cheerio before it was reported, so I guess Nichalp doesn't care. Yes, too bad for Wikipedia and sad for Nichalp. He must have needed the money badly, because this scheme would be found out eventually. And now his clients can't be too happy seeing their articles up for deletion. Any editors with an opinion about paid advocacy editing, please add your opinion at the RFC: WP:RFC/PAID. It's about 50/50 right now, maybe a bit more in favor of allowing just what Nichalp did. Priyanath talk 01:10, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

I think an encyclopedia written by all volunteers is 'revolutionary' :) . The pay-to-write approach is either 'mercenary' or 'business-as-usual'. FWIW, I do not think Hometech is a sock of Nichalp, although he could be a reincarnation of some other inactive editor. Yes, I did add 2 sources. We will save this. There is a major problem there. The article uses {{Harvard reference}}, which has been depreciated. Secondly, even some unnecessary news article appear in the Reference section. Also, it uses the disgusting {{rp}} template, which may be fine for us, but may be irksome to non-Wikipedians; since they won't be interested in Page nos while reading the article. The raw numbers don't necessarily tell the full story. FARs are usually the result of 3 years of non-improvement, or perhaps an article that got lucky when it passed FAC due to silly voting. They are usually the result of old cracks being papered over etc. A lot of new GAs 2009-failed FACs are way better than 2006 promoted FAs, so the fact that the raw count/output isn't increasing doesn't mean that output is actually worse. Even though less articles are passing, many nowadays that do pass all use proper references and textbooks and the author appears to have read some books before writing. A lot of old articles, they seem to have been clearly written off the top of someone's head and then they googled for refs afterwards and as a result the article is a bit ad hoc and the refs are usually all over the place with random websites. Not necessarily the creator's history (whatever happened to good old WP:AGF ;)), but I do question the institution's notability. Pre-proposed merger

Would not merging Indian Railways and Rail transport in India result in a more comprehensive article? The present IR article seems incomplete, and the missing pieces (on operations) are to be found in the RTII article. Please post your comments on this, and also suggest whether it would be appropriate to bring this up at WP:PM. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 07:30, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

I feel that it is best to keep them seperate. If there is something in RTI that is specific to IR move it there. Rail transport in India can talk about railways in a more generic sence and also involve historic details that cannot be included in IR. --Deepak D'Souza 08:40, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Category Redundancy

Isn't this Category Redundancy

These are just 2 examples. There are 100s of them. Now, it's common sense, someone from Calcutta will definitely be also from West Bengal. If you check Category:People from Kolkata is a sub-category within Category:People from West Bengal. So, isn't this redundancy? This needs to be corrected KensplanetTC 16:01, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

No, I dont see any problem. It is not redundancy, just sub grouping and better organisation. --Like I Care 16:05, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Problem with ISHA books as references

I recently ran across a problem of circular referencing with the ISHA books imprint, such as Om Gupta,'s Encyclopaedia of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and Lion M.G. Agrawal's Freedom Fighters of India. They appear to be compilations of articles copied directly from Wikipedia. I've posted a longer explanation at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#ISHA books and other circular references. These books are appearing as sources in some India Project articles ([8], [9]) and they should be removed. In fact, it may be prudent to treat all books under the ISHA books imprint as suspicious and unreliable. CactusWriter | needles 09:36, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

To summarize for future reference. The following two books are based on 2005-06 wikipedia articles and should never be used as sources on wikipedia:
  • Freedom fighters of India (4 volumes) by Lion M.G. Agrawal
  • Encyclopaedia of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (9 volumes) by Om Gupta
The two titles are variously listed as published by:
  • ISHA books, or
  • Gyan publishing house
Books from these two publishers should be treated with great skepticism and should not be used as references unless their reliability can be independently established (for example through reviews in academic literature or if the authors are independently reputable; FYI I haven't found this to be the case yet for any title). These books and publishers are currently used in several WPINDIA articles, and they need to be reviewed/removed. Links to wikipedia articles using such sources:
Please list below any more similar books and publishers that you find, so that we have a record of such sources. Abecedare (talk) 17:40, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Update: Apparently some of the titles published by Gyan are indeed kosher, while others are not (either copied from wikipedia like the above two, or having obvious errors). So we'll need to judge them on acase-by-case basis. Abecedare (talk) 15:46, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Sub categorization of Indian language films.

After this AFD, I realised that the coverage of Indian language films on Wikipedia are really poor, especially for languages like Malayalam which produces over 25-50+ films mainstream films per year. Before creating the articles for each of them, I wanted to subcategorize the films per year, the categories are now at CFD, thanks to the same nominator. While I am aware of the canvassing rules, I request the related project members opinions at the CFD Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_July_11#Malayalam-language_films_by_year -- Tinu Cherian - 03:28, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

The CFD is moving in the direction of a upmerge. I kind of agree with them, sub-categories must justify diffusion (for example, stub sorting people use a 65 article rule). Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:16, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

The Indian copyright act, 1957, while retaining Indian govt copyright on all "government work", permits the use of material from government announcements, particularly matter published in "any official gazette". Here is the relevant section 52, subsection q.(i):

52. The following acts shall not constitute an infringement of copyright, namely :(q) the reproduction or publication of ---
( i ) any matter which has been published in any Official Gazette except an Act of a Legislature;

I should think that "any matter published in an official gazette" would include online official documents such as the parliament of India website an official announcement of the government. Thus this would as such be permitted under "fair use", and we could add legal images to pages such as Rajiv Gandhi, and one wouldn't need to go to Brazilian govt agencies to get images for Manmohan Singh.

This is important in connection with many pages involving Indian politics, such as the Indian elections, 2009 page, and all the new MP pages, etc.

Anyone with a background in law, or knowing the history of this matter?mukerjee (talk) 22:20, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Good find. Can some experts confirms this is "really true". If so, many needed photographs related to India articles can be covered properly. -- Tinu Cherian - 05:47, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
IANAL, but as per my understanding Official Gazettes are used by GOI and state governments to publish the authoritative versions of laws, regulations and notifications, and these publications are specifically marked as such. The Information Technology Act, 2000 (Section 8) for the first time allowed for Electronic Gazettes, but I don't think generic parliamentary, ministerial and agency websites are regarded as Official Gazettes. Of course, these websites often host Official or Electronic Gazettes, but those are usually dry primary documents that are of limited use on wikipedia (examples). Of all the Gazettes I have spot-checked, I have yet to find one that contains a photograph. Abecedare (talk) 06:20, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure which is why I posted it here, so that someone who knew more could have a look at it. A found a few references on google that said Meghs were a small subgroup, but as you say, no good reliable references. It might qualify for speedy delete under criteria A7 but maybe an AfD would be better. I've also noticed that the cited Bhagat Network blog has a prominent link to the article which makes me suspect that created the article. --Sophitessa (talk) 02:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Request for advice -- what's the advantage of a "task force"?

Hi,

Over at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Guide/Task_forces, your Wikiproject is listed as a role model, so I'm wondering if you could give me some advice on the relative advantages of using a "task force" or a "wikiproject".

Right now I'm a participant in WP:LAW, as well as WP:SCOTUS (i.e. "US Supreme Court Cases"). You can see from the "Related WikiProjects" section at WP:LAW that WP:SCOTUS is one of many law-related WikiProjects. I have been thinking of starting a task force for the law school curriculum -- "JD Curriculum" -- attached to WP:LAW. When I mentioned to someone at Wikiproject Council, the response was: "Frankly, I'm not sure why SCOTUS isn't a task force of LAW to begin with, but that's just me."

So I made a post at WP:SCOTUS, asking if they'd be willing to merge and become a task force of WP:LAW. The response was, "WikiProject SCOTUS is a daughter project of WikiProject Law. Is there any importance to the "task force versus wikiproject" distinction whatsoever?"

My question is, how do I answer this editor's question?

Feel free to post your responses here or at the thread of the WP:SCOTUS talk page, here.

Thanks. Agradman talk/contribs 22:21, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Challapalli, gangachhara, chittoor app india

Could someone please look at the article Challapalli, gangachhara, chittoor app india? Another editor tagged it for speedy deletion. I tried to clean it up, but I don't know whether the article should be kept. -- Eastmain (talk) 15:30, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I'll take a look, needs a lot of editing, title change etc, verifiable location, so will be kept.-SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 19:27, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I found one non RS ref that suggested that the name is actually Chalampalli (which is what the article said, as opposed to the title). I've stubbed and moved the page to Chalampalli (Chittoor district) as there's another in Mahboobnagar district too. If anyone can add more to the article, please do so. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 01:11, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

This page is a POV fork of Daivadnya.Almost all of the content is from content rejected at Talk:Daivadnya (since deleted, so you'll have to sift through the article history). Also, the page as it stands consists entirely of book extracts, and references to spellings that have been rejected on the main page. I'm uninvolved in this dispute, but quite obviously, this isn't a separate article topic, and content disputes need to be resolved within the main article, not by creating new ones. I plan to take this to AfD; anyone have another opinion? -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 01:41, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh, and I posted a note at Talk:Vaishnavism in Daivajnas more than a week ago, but no responses. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 01:44, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
I agree that this is a content/POV fork of Daivadnya, but I don't think you need a AFD to deal with it. Just merge any useful content into Daivadnya and make Vaishnavism in Daivajnas into a redirect. Of course, if anyone objects and undoes your edits then a merge discussion or AFD would be justified. Abecedare (talk) 01:53, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict)The reason I didn't suggest a merge was because consensus in the main page was to not add all this, and section 5.2 already covers the two sects, with references and without the extras of the book extracts, and the books are already in the reference sections in the main article. I don't mind a redirect but the title is wrong (and therefore didn't do one), although that generally doesn't stop redirects. I'll do that now, let's see if there are any other opinions. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 02:08, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

I created a stub article about the Major, which has been given an AfD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Manish Pitambare.

I know nothing beyond what I found out through the cited references - although I did notice a couple of stories which I didn't cite which bemoaned the fact that the day after his death, all the news stories were about Suhail Faizal, who he shot, rather than the Major's bravery.

If anyone knowledgeable about him wants to look at the article, and improve it, please feel free to do so.

Huge work needed on Koovur, or just delete?

Not sure if this makes notability, but as far as WP format (and even legibility) it's a bit of a trainwreck. I'm no India expert, so thought I'd defer to y'all. Like many trainwreck articles I found it on WP:UNCAT, and I think it's a temple so I just filed it as Category:Hindu temples. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:42, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Too many projects

Category:India-related WikiProjects gives a huge list of intricate projs --- each state, UT and metros + geography projs. Virtually all of them are lying to rot. Just merge them here? Hometech (talk) 08:30, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Those are taskforces of this project. They can go inactive from time to time. That is no reason to merge them. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:13, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Look at some: Wikipedia:WikiProject Andaman and Nicobar Islands Wikipedia:WikiProject Patna Wikipedia:WikiProject Lakshadweep Wikipedia:WikiProject Manipur Wikipedia:WikiProject Chandigarh Wikipedia:WikiProject Daman and Diu. These and many many more are not even going inactive. They are there just to be there and have never existed as such. I'm not talking of successes like WP K'taka.

What's more important, some users may not know they are inactive or so. They post some messages there and it lies for several months. Atleast bring those workgroups talk pages here? Hometech (talk) 13:39, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Do you have an example of a message not being answered for months there? Why not reply it yourself and join projects that you might be interested in?--GDibyendu (talk) 14:17, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Suggest you do a role call like we did at WP:Films and WP:Russia a while back. Send out the members asking them to sign their name on a new list if they are still active and working with the project. Allow say a 30 day period, those who don't reply move them to an unactive section. Then make a decision whether or not the locse down a project. Ideally we want full running project on these but no point in having them if nobody is active. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:20, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Rather than deactivate the projects, I'd suggest transcluding the talk pages here, for inactive regional projects. Merging all NE projects to one and all UT projects to one might not be a bad idea either. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 21:20, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Regularly used reference resources

I've just added a new section to the Tools part of the Project nav template - Resources, and a page under it - Reference resources. The idea is to get a list of good resources that can be used for multiple articles. I've currently added a few for schools and geography categories. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 21:57, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

I think that is a good idea, but a couple of sources currently listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Resources|Reference resources]] will IMO not survive a RSN review:
These websites can be useful as a sanity check to quickly determine whether a more extensive search for sources would be worthwhile, but it would be a mistake to label them reliable. Abecedare (talk) 22:21, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
I guess I was a bit liberal with the use of the word 'reliable'. Ourvillageindia, I cross-checked a bit of their data with govt sites, and they seem to match; IndiaStudyChannel, I've used it a lot for schools and villages so far, and haven't found an instance where they're wrong yet, but I agree with the hobby site aspect. Nevertheless, I've removed the word reliable from the description. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 22:38, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Just to let everbody know I've created this template. I created an article on Architecture of Mumbai earlier and thought we should have articles on each state and major city like the Mumbai article. Maratha Clan articles

Could someone who knows anything about Maratha Clans please look at:

The Maratha clan system article, which would be the logical place to merge everything, has no inline sources in 65Kb of text, so it's difficult to tell what is Original Research, POV, essay, etc. Some of the other articles seem like delete candidates. Priyanath talk 00:24, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

This is a perennial problem with caste/community articles (see previous discussion on Maratha clans), since some of these topics are indeed notable enough to survive AFD, but hardly any neutral editor is willing to invest time and effort to source and mantain them in the face of dedicated POV pushers. For example, at one point I tried helping with the Vishwakarma (caste), but finally gave up and the page now looks like this. OK enough ranting ... :-)
The Prominent Marathas Ruling Centres seems ripe for prod or AFD, since it is a list with no clear inclusion criterion. The Royal Clans of Kshatriya Maratha page should either be redirected to Maratha clan system or renamed as List of 96 Kule (or something similar). Alternately Royal Clans of Kshatriya Maratha and List of minor Maratha clans should be merged into a single List of Maratha clans article. Abecedare (talk) 00:56, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
I PRODded Prominent Marathas Ruling Centres and it was contested, that's when I asked Priyanath to take a look at it. The rest of the clan articles are as you say very difficult for a neutral editor to get involved in as I also found out with a couple of articles. This is still one of the lighter caste/clan series that I've come across. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 01:27, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Prominent Marathas Ruling Centres is now at at AfD, and Royal Clans of Kshatriya Maratha is redirected to Maratha clan system since it was essentially duplicated there. At least that's a start. Priyanath talk 02:49, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Good work getting started and good luck too: the entire Marathi/Maratha/Maharashtra set of articles is plagued by PoV pushers. I tried my best to improve the article on Shivaji and had to leave it in the face of tremendous fancruft. --Deepak D'Souza 07:26, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
As a fellow non-Indian who's tried to clean up the Maratha topics, I sympathise. The POV-pushing is ridiculous, with many editors coming in literally just to bold the name of their particular clan to make it stand out on various pages. That and an unwillingness to use references, or citing self-published works within the community which (not surprisingly) identify the author's community as being the founders of all civilisation, etc. Plus one of the main producers of fluffy Maratha articles refuses to (or doesn't know how to) answer comments on his talk page and just blithely continues creating cruft... MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:15, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, it's a mess. Now I'm wondering if the entire Maratha article is just a POV fork of Marathi people. The hatnote says "This article is about the specific Kshatriya Marathans. For the wider group of Marathi speakers, see Marathi people." And then the unreferenced statement in the lead "Today, the term Maratha refers only to those Marathi-speaking people who also belong to certain specific Hindu castes within the Maratha clan system." Help, anyone? Priyanath talk 05:31, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Brittanica says otherwise. I'd trust that over anything else, and it debunks the WP article claims as just that. This article is in need of serious help (that isn't to say that other caste/clan articles are any better, I've had more than enough trouble keeping a couple of caste lists in shape. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 05:40, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
A lot of people, understandably, do not know the difference between the term Maratha(as a caste) and Marathi(a linguistic group). Marathas are a caste within the Marathi speaking people. --Deepak D'Souza 05:58, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
I too think that the Brittanica article in facts justifies keeping the two articles separate. It says

The term Maratha is used in three overlapping senses: within the Marathi-speaking region it refers to the single dominant Maratha caste or to the group of Maratha and Kunbi (descendants of settlers who came from the north about the beginning of the 1st century ce) castes; outside Maharashtra, the term often loosely designates the entire regional population speaking the Marathi language, numbering some 80 million; and, used historically, the term denotes the regional kingdom founded by the Maratha leader Shivaji in the 17th century and expanded by his successors in the 18th century.

The three categories seem to correspond to Maratha, Marathi people, and Maratha Empire. The definition in the lede of Marathas may need to be refined based on reliable sources, but I think it is valid to have these distinct article. Abecedare (talk) 06:03, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict) :::::I don't think the differentiation between Maratha and Marathi people is as much in question as is the issue of who qualifies as a Maratha. The hatnote on the article says Kshatriya, while Brittanica says it's across Kshatriya and Vaisya (peasants). And all these content fork articles keep harping on the Kshatriya aspect. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 06:06, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

<deindent>
Yes, our wikipedia articles seem to be presenting a narrow POV picture of the topic. For example, the Britannica article says, "A maximal circle of 96 clans is said to include all true Maratha, but the lists of these 96 clans are highly varied and disputed.". Yet Maratha clan system somehow presents a single (unsourced) list of 96 clans. I do hope somebody with knowledge of the subject looks at the article; in the meantime I have tagged it with POV and Fact templates so that a reader at least knows that the information is not really trustworthy. Abecedare (talk) 06:37, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks everyone for making all that clear :-). So it looks like the Maratha article needs to be written more neutrally, with sources, to explain the various meanings of the term, and more accurately. Am I right in thinking that because different sources include different clans in the 96, then there are actually more than 96? Earlier, I removed a comment in the lead telling people to stop adding to the 96. How would that be resolved? Any reliable source for the '96'? Oh, and should the Maratha article even include a history section, for example, since it seems to duplicate what is at Marathi people, and doesn't seem to be only about the Marathas, or at least explain which definition of Maratha it is describing? Priyanath talk 14:30, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
The Maratha#History section seems OK. The Marathi people#History section does need some more work since it only talks about the Maratha empire; as you have alredy pointed out. It needs some more work on stuff such as the reform movements of the 18-19 century, the Peshwas(who were Brahmin rulers , not marathas) ,the rise of Ambedkar and the assertion of Dalits, and a short brief on the Samyukta Maharashtra movement. You could also add a bit about the native v/s non-native controversy in Mumbai.
Thanks all, I've redone the lead based on the one source (Britannica) that seems both clear and reliable. A better source would help, but it's certainly an improvement over the only source previously used in the entire article - 1911 Britannica. Priyanath talk 21:01, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Here's another in the walled garden by the same editor: Maratha Kunabi. I removed the most obvious Original Research. It seems like a legitimate article, rather than a deletion candidate. Maybe a merge to Kunbi? Or Maratha, since this source[15] says that "But in the course of the eighteenth century, as villagers became even more prominent in armies mobilized by the government of the Peshwas, they too began seeing themselves as Marathas. As this occured, the distinction between Kunbi and Maratha became blurred; eventually the categories would fuse into "Marathi-Kunbi". Priyanath talk 17:33, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

No nomination for WP:INCOTMNOM in 1 month

Instead of receiving these nominations, shud we put all current GA/FA candidates and removals as INCOTM? Hometech (talk) 10:41, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

One can always nominate GAC/FAC/GAR/FAR articles there. Problem is that not only there wasn't much nominations for last 1 month, but also not much progress in last months collaboration candidates. We probably need more fresh bloods, who are equipped with better resources to contribute significantly. If everyone is willing to just fix a few things here and there, then content development does not progress.--GDibyendu (talk) 10:10, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Analyzing the previous July collaborations, it doesn't seem the articles have met with much success. I think it's better to reduce the number of collaborations from 5 to just 1. Let's not go on adding articles just for the sake of it. We should select only 1 article as the Collaboration of the month. It's better to rename Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Collaborations of the month to Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Collaboration of the month. I think at least selecting 1 article will allow editors to focus entirely on an article. Additionally, a message like The current collaboration of the month is XYZ article can also be displayed at the top of Wikipedia:WikiProject India and Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics pages. We can atleast hope for some success. But it looks like 5 is a complete failure. KensplanetTC 12:35, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Kens, we started 5 collabs to get more people interested (by getting articles from 5 topics). There was no activity when it was 1 per month as well. We have 60,000 articles; we will not make much of a dent with 1 collab per month. It does not matter whether it is 1 or 5, a core group of people are needed to maintain and contribute to it. We could try the spotlight route and keep a IRC channel open to discuss and collborate. Will that help? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:41, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Transliteration

In connection with the article Name of the Philippines, what is the transliteration of Philippines' name in Hindi to Latin alphabet? (फिलीपिंस) Thanks. --JL 09Talk to me! 02:28, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

I've responded on the article talk page, because there are issues as to the pronunciation on the name Philipines and the above probably isn't the correct Hindi. फिलिपिंस would be and that could be alternately spelled फिलिपीन्स and the first consonant could use a diacritic if the pronunciation is more like f (Labio-dental fricative) as in english than (plosive) as I hear many Philipinos say. - Taxman Talk 14:34, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Terrorism on hi.wikipedia

Namaskar. I came across hi:साँचा:विश्व के प्रमुख आतंकवादी संगठन by accident. The template, related category and included articles are a complete mess (unsourced, arbitrary and POV), each of the articles just says 'X is one of the most prominent terrorist organisations in the world'. The includees are for example the Angolan MPLA (governing party) and Basque people (an entire ethnic group). I'm trying to fix some article, one by one, but can't do all. I tried to raise a query at hi:विकिपीडिया वार्ता:दूतावास, but I'm not sure how deletion process works at hi.wiki. --Soman (talk) 14:37, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject India to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. Can someone with some knowledge take a look at this article? It currently appears to be a POV push; I found a Gbooks link that disputes one of the assertions in the article that they are descendants of Rama's son Lava, but there's another that says that they claim to be descendants, don't know what to make of it. Also, a total of five identical pages existed for this, I've redirected Budgujar, Burgujar, Bargujar, Vadgujar to this page as this appears to be the oldest of them all. I've opened a discussion on the talk page. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 16:54, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Is Category:Ruling clans of India useful or just puffery?

I am not an expert on these issues, but the category Category:Ruling clans of India looks awfully large and suspicious. Is "Ruling clans" a genuine, defining category, or is it just a chance for random people to go claim that their clan or subgroup used to "rule" something somewhere in the subcontinent in the dim recesses of history? I note that the entire Category:Maratha clans cat is underneath this cat, implying that every Maratha clan is a "ruling" clan... ? No offense meant at all to the academically-inclined folks from the subcontinent who edit here and do outstanding work, but the current surge in WP popularity in that region has brought in a lot of folks with major POV issues. MatthewVanitas (talk) 00:31, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

I think the category serves a legitimate purpose, however it appears to be misused currently. There are a few issues though - what defines a ruling clan - Zaminandars of local villages, rulers of small kingdoms, rulers of large kingdoms? Currently, what's in it, is a mix of all those, and some. That said, I think clean up, and probably a clearer definition/rename should solve the problem. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 00:52, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
The name is open to both misuse and misinterpretation as pointed out. Lets make some clear-cut categories. For instance many of the articles in this cat can come under Category:Former dynasties of India That leaves very little room for misuse. --Deepak D'Souza 05:31, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Misinterpretation seems to be an obvious problem because the term 'clan' is unclear. Does the 'Wodeyar dynasty' qualify as a clan, for example? What about the 'Singh's' of the earth? I also notice the term 'dynasty' thrown around liberally and assume that historians use that for, say, the Wodeyar's or the Nayak's or ... --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 06:16, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Thats the tricky part. The best I can come up with is that a dynasty is a part of a clan. A dynasty rules , a clan does not. I suggest that if we find a reference saying 'X dynasty' we treat it as such. If there is no ref dont treat it as one. e.g the Keladi Nayakas are, to the best of my knowledge, never refered to as a dynasty. Singh is a title taken by different , unrelated groups. I doubt it can be classified as a clan--Deepak D'Souza 06:46, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

(deindent) I think Category:Former dynasties of India seems an awfully good idea. Even a lot of the subcats listed eventually break down into "Fooian dynasties". Any other debate, or put it up for WP:CFD? MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:51, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Three days since. I guess this can be taken forward to CFD. --Deepak D'Souza 05:04, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Taken to CFD, please feel free to chime in. MatthewVanitas (talk) 22:43, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Also note that after the rename (or before), a few editors will have to go in and remove the category from pages that don't belong. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 23:21, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Whelp, it's in WP:CFD. Any idea what to do with the similar Category:Ruling Hindu clans and Category:Ruling Jain clans? Again, the entirety of Category:Maratha clans and Category:Rajput is listed under the former, theoretically implying that all Maratha clans are "ruling" clans. Is this as POV as it sounds, or just sloppy filing? I'm just suspicious after all the POV pushing with all the "Royal Most Supreme 96K Maratha Clan System" stuff folks recently had to clamp down on. Sikh Holocausts

Can someone with knowledge of the subject please review these article created by Guru Fatha Singh Khalsa (talk · contribs) ?

The article content is clearly POV and problematic, but I don't know if the problems are resolvable through regular editing, or if we need to start from scratch (all four subjects are notable IMO). Abecedare (talk) 03:00, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Third Sikh Holocaust 1984 is a POV version of 1984 anti-Sikh riots and should be deleted. The other "holocaust" articles need to be checked for neutrality and moved to better titles (Ghallughara). The neutrality of Harbhajan Singh Yogi has been questioned since its inception. All these articles need serious cleanup and NPOVing. utcursch | talk 19:02, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
As I mentioned on the AfD page, there is also Wadda Ghalughara and Chhotaa Ghallooghaaraa. GizzaDiscuss © 08:25, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
I'll take a stab at Harbhajan Singh Yogi, but it would be helpful if some other editors add it to their watchlist so that unnecesarry edit warring can be avoided. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 17:39, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

What about the redirects from First Sikh Holocaust and Second Sikh Holocaust? These are pretty much made up terms and should not exist even as a redirect. IMO. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 21:21, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

There's also a dab Persecution of Sikhs. Although that was the result of a dePROD from an article that was copied from the above two redirects. It's a rather intricate web. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 21:24, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Both First Sikh Holocaust and Second Sikh Holocaust are pure WP:OR and should be either Speedied or RFDied. --L I C 21:38, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I looked at the chota ghalloghara article and it documents a massacre of sikhs. However, whether or not it is a holocaust is questionable and I see no reliable sources that refer to the incident as a holocaust. This is pure WP:OR. Unfortunately, these are not candidates for speedy but need to be discussed at RfD. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 21:51, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
This is getting worse by the day, there's one user on the AfD who believes that POV belongs in Wikipedia and has not gone ahead and added all the non-RS content into 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Don't know if it's worth spending time on, but I'd say this beats any of the other articles in priority, especially when a dictionary is considered to be a reputable source for classifying something as a holocaust!! -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 02:58, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Deleted it. The only guy Quaternion who was sticking around is a sock of some banned User:Hobojaks. The edit pattern gave it away. Are the others going to be put up for AFD? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 06:38, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
That explains it, chap seemed to quote a lot of policy, except for the relevant ones. Can one of you all powerful souls with the right tools, delete the last few edits on 1984 anti-Sikh riots as it now includes all the content from the third holocaust page. Two of the above pages have to go to RfD and the dab has to go to AfD. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 06:47, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Probably too gratuitous for an RfD. I've deleted them. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 10:27, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
I've chopped a little and fact-tagged a lot on Harbhajan Singh Yogi, would be good if a few people can add to their watchlists. Also If one of the admins can delete the history between these revisions on 1984 anti-Sikh riots that will ensure that the deleted content on from Third Sikh Holocaust 1984 doesn't stay in public view and will also clear out the GFDL vio of a copy-paste merge without attribution. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 23:43, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
User:SpacemanSpiff can you please explain what you mean by attribution for the less technical among us? Why is a simple copy and paste a GDLF violation in this case, since there is no move from site to site? Where is this policy explained in detail? When to add "dynasty"/"kingdom" to end of title?

Looking at the newly-renamed Category:Dynasties of India (thanks to those who helped move it from the POV Category:Ruling clans of India), I notice that a lot of the articles are about dynasties/kingdoms, but only have the name. An example being Vengi, which is per the opening sentence about the Vengi kingdom and not "Vengi"-ness in general. Not sure what WP policies apply, should we move such articles to "Fooian dynasty", "Fooian kingdom", etc. so that even a perusal of just the titles makes it clear that they're not individuals, castes, villages, etc? MatthewVanitas (talk) 00:39, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

There are a few things that need to be done -
  • Remove all people from the cat (there are a few)
  • Move articles to correct titles and keep in cat
  • Move articles to correct titles and remove from cat (there are a few like that too, a Zamindar clan doesn't belong in dynasties)
I'll take a stab at some of it by the weekend. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 02:12, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Glancing around Wikipedia, it appears the standard elsewhere is that "Fooian dynasty" is lowercase. A lot of the Indian ones are capitalised, but I'm not sure that's the standard method (since a lot of those articles are pretty dodgy as it is). Any objections for a trend to lowercasing "Fooian Dynasty" down to "Fooian dynasty" where applicable for these India cats? MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:59, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

IPA for these?

Does anyone know how to pronounce Baichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri and Subrata Pal? I'm sure I've been pronouncing them wrong and I'd like to add an IPA to the articles. Spiderone 19:28, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

More "ruling clans" categories, CFD?

As others have noted, there are still cats with the POV-ish "ruling clan" determination, which again gives POV pushers free rein to say "hey, my Fooian clan used to have some noblemen 400 years ago, that makes my clan a ruling clan!" I suggest some standardised method to rename Category:Muslim ruling clans of India, Category:Ruling Hindu clans, and Category:Ruling Jain clans. Suggestions? Go with "Fooian dynasties", "Fooian dynasties of India", or which? I note there's no "Ruling Buddhist XYZ" cat, probably because those Indian dynasties/clans are mainly historical and don't have modern POV-pushers... MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:45, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm inclined to delete all these due to the inappropriate use with people adding their choice of castes to these. However, there are very good benefits to having religious sub cats to the Dynasties of India, as Hindu dynasties of India, Muslim dynasties of India, Jain dynasties of India, Buddhist dynasties of India; creating them afresh and adding to them as opposed to moving these is a better option IMHO. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 20:21, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
And, pray, what would these very good benefits be? They only seem to add avoidable clutter. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 12:37, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Historians treat these as distinct master groups, and that's a very good reason to have separate cats here, with each cat identifying the groups for editors and readers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 15:08, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure about this. Do historians explicitly refer to the terms 'Hindu/Muslim/Buddhist/Jain dynasties of India' or use them to categorize ruling families? For example, would one say 'The Chauhans were a Hindu dynasty of India'? If yes, then I agree with SpacemanSpiff. If no then I agree with SBC-YPR.--RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 16:08, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
There's Islamic dynasties of India, a book that can get no more explicit in categorization, this book from 1851 categorizes many dynasties of the south as Hindu dynasties and so on. Gbooks has a ton of refs including Brittanica (no previews) that use these terms in categorization. That said, these are highly misused categories, so will it retain any value after a couple of weeks of creation? I really don't know. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 16:26, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Do mainstream historians use these terms. (I know that the very name will cause outrage :-) but I don't think Romila Thapar does.) Also, the Hindu dynasty term is applied to the South in the reference, but what about, say, the family of Prithviraj Chauhan, or the various Rajput kingdoms? Are these families normally referred to as Hindu dynasties? Finally, the reference for Islamic dynasties actually refers to "Islamic dynasties of India, Iran, and Central Asia; a much broader cut. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 16:47, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

<outdent> This and this Gbooks listings, although very restrictive (with the "of India" tag) show that religious categorization is in vogue and covers the subcontinent in general including most of the SAARC region. If you remove the "of India" tag, the universe within Indian dynasties greatly increases. I'll also say that most of these categorizations are pre 1960 books (or maybe that's the Gbooks universe). I didn't check for Buddhist/Jain/Sikh listings, but don't think it'd be any different. That said, while I think the cats are useful, I don't necessarily think they're a must have. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 17:15, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Category - Khatri clans

Can anyone take a look at Category:Khatri clans. The list of articles in it is rather a lot, and many of them don't even mention belonging to Khatri clans, let alone provide a reference for it. Also, it's very difficult to say which article is a name vs a clan. e.g - Mehta is clearly a name used in multiple regions, so would that classify as a single "clan"? I'm not sure how to go about cleaning up this category. Also, many of these names were part of a list that was deleted at AfD, and now keeps getting added to the article Khatri in its entirety. Looks like the article combines two different temples (close to each other) - Balussery Kota Temple and Balussery Vettakorumakan Temple (with a few transliterations sp. variations) - and has a typo in the title. Looks like there are a few news and book sources for both. At this point the title is incorrect, so a redirect isn't of much use IMO. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 16:32, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

I suggest creating a peer review related template similar to Wikipedia:Peer review/PRbox --Redtigerxyz Talk 14:27, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Redtigerxyz, anything that needs manual updates will get out-dated soon. The article alerts page is bot-updated, so stays current. There is no way to keep them both (pr box and alerts page) in sync unless you can get the bot writer to update the PR box template as well with his bot. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:41, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
PR box is just a suggestion. The main issue is: Is Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Peer review (which is almost dead) needed? --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:30, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Or even if someone is reading it and reviewing stuff, can we just have a link to alerts page .There is no reason for people to put up another new request in that page if they want a Peer Review. Just unnecessary duplication of work. --Vinay84 (talk) 14:56, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
It served as a first step before a formal peer-review at the WP:PR. It allowed project members to have a first glance for fixes. I have marked it historical for now...can be restored when it gets some volunteers. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:15, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Meaningless categories

An user has created many meaningless categories.[19] like major IT cities of India. Shyamsunder (talk) 05:31, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Category:Major cities of Central India, Category:Indian commercial capitals, Category:Metro Cities of Madhya Pradesh/Chhattisgarh, Category:Metro Cities of Maharashtra, Category:IT Cities of India, Category:Metro Cities in India should be taken to CFD. It looks like this user and User:Anas999 are collaborating in creating a lot of this. Multiple duplicates for Bhopal railway station and other such things. I cleaned out a few of these last week, but apparently I didn't take care of it all. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 05:49, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Tremendous POV issues at Akhtar Raza

Ran across this article Akhtar Raza, and am rolling up my sleeves to go tackle the POV issues. Just for a sampling, the main contributor keeps using Raza's full title at every mention in the article, resulting in phrases like On the blessed Friday, 15th of January 1962, (24 of Dhu al-Qi'dah 1382 Hijri), the august personality of Sunni Islam (Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l-Jamā‘ah) His Eminence reached the age of 20. Clearly not acceptable. There's a single contributor with some 1000 edits on this article since early this year, so I expect pushback on my mods. If a couple other folks could add it to watchlist and block any counter-edits restoring POV, that'd be great. MatthewVanitas (talk) 01:41, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

On my watchlist now, first step might be for you to chop off all the blog refs and associated text. I'll fill in refs using reflinks to make that process easier. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 01:46, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

WikiMeetup 6, Bangalore 11 th Oct 2009

The next meetup is in the month of October 2009. WikiMeetup 6, Bangalore. FYI -- Tinu Cherian - 13:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

This article needs work and I had removed an entire synthesis section put in by the original author. I had put it up at AFD but it was kept after only two comments were made. If it's truly notable for inclusion, then there needs to be input from the Wikiproject that it is related to.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 01:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

I have made a suggestion to move and expand the scope of the article on the article talk page. Aside: I think India project members missed this recent AFD since it was not included in the Deleteion sorting/India, else it would perhaps have received some attention earlier. Thanks for bringing it to this page. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 01:56, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

RFA announcements

I think it's worth clarifying whether there is a consensus to have RFA announcements on this page for Wikiproject India (or Indian) RFA candidates, provided that they are neutrally worded notifications (i.e. that they do not violate WP:CANVASS). The Australian Wikipedia noticeboard seems to have allowed it a while back (see example 1, example 2, and explicit consensus; with arguments for allowing it). However, I haven't gone through any other similar discussions or other WikiProject noticeboards, and such an analysis may be useful. Cheers, Ncmvocalist (talk) 18:08, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

It seems obvious that WikiProject members would be the most informed about whether an associated editor is qualified to be an admin or not. Posting a neutrally worded notice here (or at other Projects) does the broader Wikipedia community a service by getting informed opinions on the candidate—rather than !votes based solely on "I really like what you said about dolphins in Q#5". Priyanath talk 18:18, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
IMO, it makes perfect sense to add a notification to Wikiproject discussion boards that editors are part of. It happens in cases of dispute resolution, RFCs, AfDs etc, so I see no reason why RfAs should be any different. That said, maybe this should be discussed at Village Pump? -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 18:25, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
As YelloMonkey pointed out, this also seem to be the practice at WP:MILHIST (I found several examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, etc). That said, it may be best to discuss this at WT:RFA, and to wait a few days so that their are no accusations of vested interest. Abecedare (talk) 02:36, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
It's always been allowed on Wikiprojects. And it's rampant on IRC and all the other social clubs (partisan campaigning), even though the high ranking officials are supposed to stamp it out. As for turning the tide, anybody who knows the history of WP India post mid-2006 will be aware of a number of horrendous personal disputes based on ego and nothing to do with article POV, fights to the death etc, long term stalking, spreading emails around everywhere, email threats and double dealing etc etc, so an automatic 100% support is far from guaranteed. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:55, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
That's similar to what I thought. Anyway, I'll hold off for a few more hours, but unless the direction of this discussion changes, I intend on reinstating the post that was removed (unless someone beats me to it). Under these circumstances, such a removal would not be acceptable, even under talk page guidelines. Ncmvocalist (talk) 05:11, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Reinstated. Ncmvocalist (talk) 13:23, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

(outdent) You did the right thing Ncmvocalist. It probably won't make a difference to the outcome but it is important that we publicize related RfAs on this noticeboard. The fact that Abecedare hasn't garnered opposition from the notice is because of the type of editor he is, and that may not be true for other, equally deserving, admin candidates, so Aditya's premise is probably incorrect anyway. But, more than anything else, participation in an RfA gives other editors a stake in the process; serves to inform them of who is becoming an admin so that they can get help when they need access to someone with the tools; and will, hopefully, over time get more WPIndia editors interested in broader wikipedia issues. We need more of these types of editors on WP:India. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 16:38, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Thought I'd reply here. As I already explained on YellowMonkey's talk page, the reason I thought it was canvassing was because it was posted in a location where the candidate was most likely to get support votes (and while it was phrased neutrally, I felt that was the intention).
Nvineeth: The above point should answer your query on Abecedare's RfA.
YellowMonkey: I don't wish to be the "police" as you term it, but if I see something that I believe is wrong, or not allowed, I'm not going to stand by and let it pass. Apparently I was wrong, and you were right. Your message is back up. So you can continue what is already "rampant on IRC (even though the high ranking officials are supposed to stamp it out.)"
Ncmvocalist: It wasn't my intention to make a "veiled accusation". I thought I was quite frank, though it seems this was not the case. And I realize you were startled by my comments, again, that was not my intention, but you really are easily startled.
Priyanath: My !vote on Abe's RfA was meant to be humorous. Since some people don't get it, next time I'll add a disclaimer. I could have as easily added a rationale, but the candidate was so obviously worthy that it wasn't needed.
RegentsPark: I think I already answered your comments above. As I already mentioned, it won't make any difference to the outcome. Abecedare is a very strong candidate. ƒ(Δ)² 16:05, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Hi Aditya, I actually wasn't referring to your !vote at RfA - because I didn't realize you were one of several who made that humorous comment about Q#5 (and I appreciated the humor, by the way). So, my apologies for not looking more closely and noticing that I could have (rightfully) been seen as directing that comment to you individually. I think everyone here was acting in good faith, including you, so I think we should all forgive each other and move on. Priyanath talk 16:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Aditya, I wouldn't doubt the good faith behind your comment (which is why I was easy with it being removed). But, thinking some more about it, it really is beneficial to post an RfA notice here. The editors on WP India, or so it seems to me anyway, tend to avoid larger wikipedia discussions and this is one way of getting more people to see the larger world outside this project. We need more admins, on this project as well as on wikipedia, and seeing the route to adminship is one way of getting there. (I don't agree with the IRC analogy because there canvassing is off-wikipedia and presumably non-neutral. Here, on the other hand, everything is clearly visible to the community.) Still, like I said, that your observations are in good-faith is unquestionable. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 16:57, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I understand your point of view. ƒ(Δ)² 17:07, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
(Aditya, RP's 'sheesh' edit summary was made while correcting the grammar on his post....) Priyanath talk 17:13, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Aditya, then it should be obvious that the way you went about doing this was ill-considered, even if it was in good faith. In future, please do your homework before making an accusation; needless drama is not desired within this WikiProject, let alone outside of it. Also, refraining from making comments about how easily a person is startled, would, by contrast to what you did here, be a step in the right direction. You are hardly in any position to make such a judgement, particularly when it is based on their reaction to something you quite wrongly said. But thank you for clarifying your intent. Help needed on Kambojas

It would be really helpful to have some more views about the above article. Can someone take a look at this article?

Who is Who of India. It needs a lot of effort to convert to a list, but is it worth the effort?-SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 04:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Article doesn't fit into Wikipedia's style; nor could I find any similar "List of important people in X country" articles. But I liked the concept: a single page where you can see all important people in the administration; who cannot be included in the Country infobox. If there is consensus, can we take this concept forward? I guess it would need the approval of the Wikipedia crats? --Deepak D'Souza 16:07, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
I'm fine with renaming to List of XXX officials of India (I can't think of a suitable title, but am not for using the word important as it is a bit subjective) and completely restructuring the list to remove the templatish feel, honorifics etc and keeping. If that's the direction, I don't mind spending a little time to clean it up. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 16:15, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, there is the List of office-holders article. Would List of office-holders in India fit? --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 02:29, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
I'll move to List of office-holders in India; I don't like this present title one bit, so if you think it's delete worthy, feel free to delete or tag. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 16:20, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
I've cleaned up and linked as much as I could, there are a few things on the list I have no clue about, so if someone else can check those red linked departments, that'd be good. In retrospect, it might have been easier to create this from scratch than to reformat the original article! -SpacemanSpiff 19:00, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Assembly constituencies

I propose to create a category to hold the categories like Category:Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, Category:Assembly constituencies of Maharashtra, Category:State Constituencies of Tamil Nadu. Can someone please suggest the name. How about Category:Assembly constituencies of Indian states. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shyamsunder (talkcontribs) 03:08, 3 October 2009

That name seems fine. An alternate to consider would be Category:Legislative Assembly constituencies of Indian states, and perhaps renaming all the subcats too. This is a bit clearer. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 14:48, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks SpacemanSpiff . I am thinking of Category:Assembly constituencies of states of India. It will provide clarity. Comments? Shyamsunder (talk) 21:49, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Category:Assembly constituencies of India should be fine. "states" do not add any specificity. --CarTick 22:06, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Why don't you guys like the use of "Legislative" before Assembly? :) I think it adds clarity, but I'm not hung up on it either. cheers -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 22:13, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
agree, it does add clarity. But then there is no other assembly constituency other than Legislative assembly to disambiguate. guess it is a matter of choice. dont mind either. we also need to change Category:State Constituencies of Tamil Nadu name which I had created once without much thinking. Most of the (if not all) entries in Category:Assembly constituencies in West Bengal seems to be just the towns. wondering if they should be decategorised. --CarTick 22:23, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
agreed that there are no constituencies other than legislative constituencies so it is clear even without the word legislative. Other point whether we should use "in" or "of". thanks Shyamsunder (talk) 22:30, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
not sure. "in" sounds right to me. --CarTick 22:35, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I think the term Assembly constituency works well for an Indian reader (or those familiar with Indian governance systems), but it doesn't provide that meaning to an unacquainted reader, who would not know what an assembly constituency is. That's the reason I think it adds clarity. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 22:37, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
That is okay. I will now create the category suggested by SpacemanSpiff Category:Legislative Assembly constituencies of Indian states. Thanks Shyamsunder (talk) 07:15, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Caste articles

I've been going through a lot of caste articles recently, and I find this business of adding United Kingdom, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada etc as significant population centers rather odd. e.g. Khatri, Reddy (and many more). Quite obviously, the local census in those locations don't tabulate caste based categories, sometimes not even going down to the level of Indian (in the case of the US etc). Given that removing these is just going to result in an edit war (despite all these being completely unreferenced), can we come up with a convention/policy here? -SpacemanSpiff 19:20, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Definitely an issue with Reddy, where the long-standing intro could easily be misread as implying that Reddies were an indigenous Irish tribe/ethnic group, as opposed to a bunch of folks who moved there 20yrs ago. Unless someone can cough up actual census stats, I'd say it's fair to delete. It'll provoke an edit war, but practically anything you do to make India/Pakistan articles better generates a flurry of hatred and accusations of belonging to "obscure local group X that hates my personal group Y". Prior to getting involved in WP:INDIA I'd never been called a "Kunbi" before (and had to look it up on Wiki after I was called it), so first time for everything. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:50, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
(ec):I suggest removing them from infoboxes and letting the text do its stuff. For example, "Khatris are also present in the United States, etc.". If there is consensus for removal, we should remove them and deal with edit wars in the normal fashion.--RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 20:52, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
I don't mind starting this task off on a few articles and leaving a talk page message on this rationale with each edit; hopefully no one has any objections to this, although it seems a very rational approach. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 16:57, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

BLP nightmare?

Can someone else take a look at Amitabh bachchan Controversies, the content is a cut & paste move from Amitabh Bachchan. The reason given for the move was that the main article is too big. However it was 43K before and 36K after the move. Also, moving the content lock, stock and two smoking barrels results in a POV problem on the main article. Looking for another opinion before I just undo the move and AfD the split article (don't think it qualifies G10, but open on that). -SpacemanSpiff 16:51, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

YellowMonkey deleted this yesterday. Since then, the same user recreated the page and has been repeatedly been deleting the content from the main article and has been reverted by multiple editors. Has been warned multiple times, but just blanks their talk page. -SpacemanSpiff 13:02, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
I have redirected it back to the main article. I have also given the user and the IP sock 3RR warning for edit-warring. If they persist in recreating the split without discussion, they will be blocked. Blanking warnings is not an issue, since it only confirms that the warnings have been read by the user. The editor is free to discuss the issue and gain consensus for the split after they have read through WP:BLP and WP:POVFORK. Abecedare (talk) 13:21, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Proddatur article

Could someone with knowledge of the above town possibly look at the article?

Most of the article looks more like a town directory than a Wikipedia article, and I don't know the Project's criteria for the details to be included in articles - I know that it doesn't look right to me, but I don't want to delete tons of it - very few of the temples, mosques, etc appear to have articles on Wikipedia.

I have trimmed down the notable residents list - the two remaining are the only ones which had articles (or even mentions - if one of the others had been mentioned in another article, I would have done a piped link to the article they were mentioned in).

Any help would be gratefully received!

Tourist places/ Education in articles for cities etc

Seems to be a fairly India specific phenomenon of appending a tourist guide in many city articles. Policy says An article on Paris should mention landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, but not the telephone number or street address of your favorite hotel or the current price of a café au lait on the Champs-Élysées. Wikipedia is not the place to recreate content more suited to entries in hotel or culinary guides, travelogues, and the like. Notable locations may meet the inclusion criteria, but the resulting articles need not include every tourist attraction, restaurant, hotel or venue, etc. Such details may be welcome at Wikitravel, instead. Just wanted to know the opinion of other folks here before I go on removing such content

Similair is the case of education- while I can understand mention about notable institutes- like those with a separate wiki page, is there really a requirement for an often long list of all schools and colleges in each city?

trakesht (talk) 08:57, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

As far as education related list for each city/state is concerned, we do require them at least till we complete writing articles for most of them and the category becomes sufficient. You are welcome to join WP:INEI to help in this regard. Srikanth (ping me) 09:19, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Help needed in identifying photos of Jaisalmer fort and Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur

I have a photo I took of Jaisalmer Fort back in 1994 -

which is on the Jaisalmer page. Someone wrote to say recently that it was actually a photo of Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur. Now, I feel very confident that my photo is of Jaisalmer but when I went looking for other photos both on Wikimedia and using Google I found a lot of confusion between photos of the two forts. It is true that from some angles they look similar - but I believe they can be distinguished if one looks carefully. If you look at the detail in the photo of Mehrangahr at [20] you will see the construction at the right of the photo is very different from that shown in my photo of Jaisalmer

For further evidence - have a look at the stock photo here - [21]

I could be wrong, of course (in which case I apologise) but, whatever, a quick search on WikiMedia and Google will quickly show that, whoever is right, a number of photos of these forts have been misidentied (even on Govt. tourist sites), and it would be great if someone could sort them out.

Is there anyone here who really knows and can identify which fort is which? And, please, could you then go through the pertinent articles in the Wikipedia and WikiCommons and correct the mistaken ones? Thank you very much, John Hill (talk) 03:03, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Notability of स्वप्नलोक

Another editor created the article स्वप्नलोक with the following text:

If you think the subject is notable, you may want to create an English-language article about it, or add the Hindi text to the Hindi Wikipedia. The article स्वप्नलोक may be deleted speedily. -- Eastmain (talk) 15:15, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

I speedied the page about the non-notable blog. Its claimed importance was simply that it "represents the writings of the blogger, and not some ideology". Abecedare (talk) 15:38, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

iloveindia.com

There are a large number of "references" being added to articles without edit summary from an IP number that seem to me to be intended to promote an external website rather than as an actual source for the articles they are being added to. For examples see 159.91.151.97. See LINKSPAM. Before commencing a lot of deletions, I thought it should be discussed here. If there is a consensus that these links should be deleted, is there a simple way to do a mass reversion?--KenWalker | Talk 19:49, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

  • Iloveindia.com was used by me because it was a great source. There is no other intentions. It is a great link that is why I used it. These is no reason that it should be deleted. I did a great amount of clean up work as well and I don't want them to get undone. Please keep them as it is! Also if you wish to delete the iloveindia.com reference will the other clean up edits I made be erased? (159.91.151.97 (talk) 20:45, 26 October 2009 (UTC))
IP, I noticed that you were doing some very useful cleanup work on several India related articles, and even left a welcome message on your talk page earlier today. Unfortunately www.iloveindia.com is just another generic website, and we have no way to be confident if the information it hosts is reliable or not (see WP:RS for the type of sources we consider reliable on wikipedia). Therefore we need to remove citations to this website that you added in good-faith, but there is no reason for us to undo any of your other clean-up work. In fact would you be willing to remove the links yourself ? You can access the list of pages you edited at Special:Contributions/159.91.151.97. I would also recommend getting an account on wikipedia, which will make both editing and communications easier. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 21:51, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
It looks like there are plenty of them left although I have not examined them to see which user has added them. They should all go. --KenWalker | Talk 00:29, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi, 159.91,151.97! It looks like you're making some good progress on your editing technique! But I would agree with KenWalker that iloveindia.com isn't a reliable reference. A number of the articles I looked at seemed very casual or informal. (At random, I just picked "How to Watch Birds" [22]. Statements such as "thoroughly enjoyed by people of all age groups" are WP:PEACOCK and "make sure that you stick to certain tips" isn't even correct English.) In that article there are no citations, no references, no links, no date, no author. Reliable references need things such as those. Otherwise, Regards Piano non troppo (talk) 13:56, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi

I've been copyediting this page for some time now. Another editor is making good-faith amendments (he is a successful student from one of these schools) but his edits are a bit NPOV. I would appreciate it if someone with a bit more knowledge of the Indian schools system (particularly in Delhi) could give this article a look; as there are only the two of us currently editing it's potentially a bit confrontational, and I don't want to discourage the other editor. Thanks.   pablohablo. 20:58, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey. Just checking quickly, your most recent edit here is "good" [23]. You added a reference, dated it, and removed the original research phrase "came as an exception to the image of government schools with the best of facilities". The smallest bit of caution: my guess is the original research phrase is correct. I don't know about Indian schools, and that phrase was highly useful to me. If it could have been "saved" by adding a reliable reference, or by moderating the statement, that would have been optimal. Best Regards, Piano non troppo (talk) 14:25, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

I noticed an addition to the Darjeeling page stating that Darjeeling was a part of Nepal and was ceded to India under the Sugauli Treaty in 1819, but the article also says that the area was leased by the British from the Chogyal of Sikkim in 1839 and these two pieces of information are contradictory. The leasing from Sikkim is cited, but I am not confident about the quality of that source. I trimmed some or from the sugauli treaty part but would appreciate it if someone with more knowledge about this could take a look at it.

As a follow-up, I searched JSTOR for Sugauli Treaty and all I could find was an Economic and Political Weekly article that indicated that all the territory seized by the British was subsequently returned (see my note on Talk:Sugauli Treaty). The Greater Nepal article makes similar claims about the treaty (though, this may be ok because the article is about a movement and claiming that the movement rests on a belief says nothing about the veracity of that belief). Again, if someone who knows something about this can take a look, that would be great. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 19:02, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

According to this source Darjeeling was ceded to to the EIC on Feb 1st 1835. It's just a listing though and doesn't have treaty details. Abecedare (talk) 19:15, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
The gazetteer of Sikhim (1894) confirms the cession (not lease) of Darjeeling in Feb 1835, with some details of the circumstances. Is this good enough ? Abecedare (talk) 19:22, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

The actual history as it relates to Darjeeling is much more complex than what I said above, and involves the Treaties of Segauli (1816), Titaliya (1817), Tunlong (1861) and Sinchulia (1865) besides the 1835 bit I mentioned, and some fighting in 1849-50. See This paper (pages 47-48) and EB1911 for more gory details (the dates in the two don't match up exactly but I guess that is because of the differnce in the timings of the skirmishes, signing of the treaties, transfer of land etc.) Abecedare (talk) 19:54, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

That's interesting. EB1911 says that Darjeeling was taken by the British by the 1816 treaty and handed over to Sikkim (apparently because Nepal had 'wrested' the region from Sikkim at an earlier unstated date). So, I guess Darjeeling was a part of the Sugauli treaty after all though apparently not in the way it is currently described. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 21:12, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Hmmm, that's interesting. I never delved so much into the history during the improvement of the article (back in 2006). So, what do you guys suggest? Do you need to change anything in the History portion of Darjeeling article? Or, any change in History of Darjeeling? What needs to be removed is that additional small sub-paragraph from History segment of Darjeeling article (and discussion in talk page in case of any dispute). Also, the article Sugauli Treaty definitely needs copy-edit, and use of more encyclopedic language.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:50, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
It does appear that the treaty of 1816 affected the status of Darjeeling, so that is a useful addition to the history of Darjeeling and that part of the subpara should be corrected and merged into the main history section (a separate connection with Nepal is unnecessary). I agree that the Sugauli Treaty is a bit of a mess and needs cleaning up and verification (I'm not sure if the treaty is better called Anglo-Nepal treaty of 1816 - some legwork may be necessary. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 20:36, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

New Pages - Indian villages and towns

There have been a large number of articles added recently about small villages and towns in India. Do they warrant inclusion into the project? I can start tagging them all as I patrol them if you'd like. Ferrantino (talk) 15:07, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Villages and towns are inherently notable and are covered by the gazetteer function of our five pillars. Also see Wikipedia:AFDP#Places. The pages will not get deleted without an AfD, and even then only if they are not verifiable. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 15:12, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Right, I was asking if I should tag them as part of WikiProject:India or wait until they're more substantial. I assume the whole point of the project is to better flesh articles like these out, but I figured I'd ask first. Ferrantino (talk) 15:19, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Ah, sorry; when anyone says tag, I assume they mean "tag for deletion". Tagging the WP project will be helpful, but I think User:Tinucherian runs a bot that tags pages if they have the necessary categories on them. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 15:23, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Would an appropriate start to the movement be in 1857 or 1885? Should the Indian rebellion of 1857 form a part of the movement itself or be considered as the background to it? Different sources make different claims, so I'm not sure as to how to structure this (the article's existing - and unreferenced - position is to consider 1857 as the start of the movement). Please help out by providing inputs on the article talk page. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 14:02, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

I guess the way to go is to include both dates, making it clear that while some sources state that it started in 1857, the majority of historians believe it started in 1885 (I'm assuming that is the case). --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 14:56, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

"British India" and terminological nuance

There's a debate on Talk:Rudyard Kipling at the moment about whether the article should refer to him as being born (and working, etc) in "British India" or simply in "India", and whether or not the former has Pakistani political overtones (to which I say, ?). Thoughts from someone more familiar with general historic usage would probably help. Shimgray | talk | 17:56, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Really a non-issue. Even the Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi article lists British India as his place of birth, since that is a name of the political entity into which he (and Rudyard Kipling) were born. FWIW, George Washington's place of birth is listed as British America. Abecedare (talk) 18:09, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
This appears to be a standard issue across a lot of articles with many people looking to "forget" history and introducing inaccuracies. Just reverted the change from Madras State to Tamil Nadu (which didn't exist at that time) on Kamal Haasan twice today. And the same user has changed it back. Happens every so often, someone else, go ahead and change it back, please! -SpacemanSpiff 18:16, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I suspected that was the case. I thought my weighing in, loudly British, to say so might prove counterproductive, though; better ask someone who seems less like they've a vested interest! ;-) Shimgray | talk | 18:48, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help with checking this article for accuracy? There seems to be a dispute about the content going on within the article itself! Cassandra 73 (talk) 22:14, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

The GOI has proposed renaming the state and language, although the decision is yet to pass through parliament yet. See this TOI article. However, we have already seen the two wikipedia pages moved to their new proposed names (which I'll move back). Can some more editors watchlist these pages and keep an eye out for Orissa/Odisha and Oriya/Odia firefights ? Abecedare (talk) 14:08, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

I have moved back the pages; can some other admin move-protect the articles. A semi-protect may also be needed since some IPs have already changed all occurances of Orissa to Odisha in the state article. Abecedare (talk) 14:12, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Note: Category:Orissa is now up for deletion and many pages in it have already been renamed. Abecedare (talk) 14:26, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

I came across these name changes a couple of weeks back but didn't have time to look through them then. But I was under the impression that the name of the state has changed officially and decided to let the storm settle down before any page moves. However, the Oriya should be the right title for the language irrespective of what the state decides to call it. Eitherways, it's too early for a name change per WP policy I guess. -SpacemanSpiff 15:38, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Groan! Seems like Wikipedia will remain a battleground for Indo-Pak warrioris as long as it remains online. Some time back we had to deal with an Indian POV pusher, now this. 1987 Disputed State Elections is a ripe candidate for AFD: plainly POV. The Peaceful Protest Movement is more of a Coatrack rather than outright POV but Im not sure if it is suitable for AfD right now. --Deepak D'Souza (talk) 06:07, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
There was another page, India and state terrorism, deleted as G4; I didn't know that it had already been to AfD. -SpacemanSpiff 13:54, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
I've converted those pages into redirects to the main articles. There is also Operation Tupac, though from the other side. Perhaps this should also be redirected to kashmir conflict? --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 22:23, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
The other ones were split off, but Operation Tupac actually predates Kashmir conflict by a couple of months, and has non-overlapping content. So, some sort of a merge is probably in order. -SpacemanSpiff 22:59, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

List of MPs

I wonder if we already have these lists. If not, I have a suggestion. each takes it upon himself to work on one election. i know it is a lot of work, but is not as difficult as it just needs copying and pasting. we may just need to come up with a standard format if we agree on doing this... --CarTick 22:00, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

If you have an excel list with columns -- first name, last name, party, birthdate, deathdate, birthplace, constituency, first elected, no of terms, last elected, then mailmerge can be used to create the complete articles on word. It'll be a matter of about 20 seconds on-wiki per page to create with the right categories etc. -SpacemanSpiff 22:07, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

It was a strange page, the only blue link was to S. P. Balasubrahmanyam who is a singer, not a linguist. I redirected the page to List of linguists. If anyone is interested in actually making an article/list of it, feel free to revert my redirect. I found the page because of some strange advertising for it in another article, by a couple of SPAs. -SpacemanSpiff 16:27, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Redirect reverted saying it's a new page and errors should be expected, no improvement. At this point, the page does more harm than good, and I'd say that adding a tag wouldn't solve anything. So unless one of the admins here does a protected redirect or someone else actually makes some improvement to the article/list, it's an AfD candidate. -SpacemanSpiff 19:52, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Disputes involving a certain article/user

A recent dispute involving the actions of an admin (from this WikiProject) and a particular IP who is no longer editing, on that article, has led to an admin RfC/U - one of the issues raised is whether the IP was disruptively continuing prior disputes or trolling. constant menace in India page......

ARYAN818, user who was blocked for his username. I personally dont believe in what he was accused for his username. He sounds naive (in wikipedia world politics) and interested in one POV. He just wants Aryan heritage and all other good things in his perspective in the India page. He is clearly a POV pusher. As I believe every person can and should be reasoned with and given a chance to mend themselves, I am wondering if this user can be taught out of his single-perspective world. Is it even worth the effort? are we just going to ignore him until he gets blocked one day again. --CarTick 14:13, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

I don't really care for his user name, but this set of posts prevents any assumption of good faith from me. I doubt it's worth the effort, but there are some people here with Gandhian patience :) -SpacemanSpiff 14:41, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
I have conflicting views on this. I think both ways. my intuition tells me to ignore and revert on sight. but, considering that we have so many editors leaving, a reformed POV pusher wouldnt be a bad idea. but you r right, who has the patience.--CarTick 15:21, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
He only edits talk pages and never articles. He's just trying to get a rise out of people, so no need to worry. If he was sort of serious he would just edit some article and if anything useful is added it will stick. People don't just revert spelling errors, ref addns just because people are banned, even though they all vow to in arbitration decisions and all that. Those vows are just part of the wiki-game YellowMonkey (bananabucket) (help the Invincibles Featured topic drive) 16:31, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
That is perhaps true in some cases, but I still see banned users being reverted on principle, and then any spelling errosr etc. being fixed by a non-banned user. The same goes for the exceptionally rare instances where content contributions are good. Ncmvocalist (talk) 16:36, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
His username issue aside, I did not see any useful contribs from him be it as a registerd user or as an anon IP. Some of you may remember he had promised to add some "good pictures" of India that he had, used it as an excuse to canvas for an unblock; refused to change his username; got unblocked and ended up being blocked by someone else. His account has since been deleted. And yes, those "good pictures" never materialized! The problem is that Aryan is not really interested in Wikipedia. For him this is just a forum to wail about how great race has not been given its due credit. He hasnt been disruptive so far only been a pain in the ..., which is why he isn't a good case for a block request. One of these days he will certainly progress to the next stage and get a block; just like Gaunkaar. In my experience POV pushers rarely become good contributors; and if they do, it is only as long as their POV is preserved. Try if you feel he is worth it but IMHO, he has proved 4-5 times that he isnt worth it.--Deepak D'Souza (talk) 04:59, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

I too suggest that we keep it simple and address each of his posts on their merits instead of worrying too much about the person behind it. If he has a genuinely good-faith question or suggestion, address it (at least the first time). If he is soapboxing, ignore him, or revert if it gets too repetitive. If he makes person attacks, revert and warn him.
In my experience, POV pushers seldom become good contributors (there are exceptions, whom I won't name :-) ); we should make an effort at least at the beginning, but know when to limit our losses. More important is retaining experienced editors by supporting them against trolls, and welcoming/guiding inexperienced users (such as, say, User:Aschvetahata), who have potential but are not yet familiar with the technical details. And click save every time it does the replacement. Also, as Ganesh mentioned, you can use the script to create the articles from it, instead of typing the stuff again and again. cheers. -SpacemanSpiff 05:57, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, the current structure appears to be the convention across multiple countries. I just checked England -- Category:Parliamentary constituencies in England and Ireland -- Category:Dáil Éireann constituencies in the Republic of Ireland. -SpacemanSpiff 19:01, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure if this needs fixing, primarily because a parliamentary constituency is not necessarily a well-defined place (in the sense that it may not have independent existence as the name of a place). At least that's the way it is in the United States, which is why districts are numbered rather than named. See, for example, New York's 5th congressional district which covers parts of Queens as well as parts of Long Island. (Of course, the way constituencies are created in India may be totally different and may be well-associated with distinct geographical entities.)--RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 19:09, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
If I read it correctly, CarTick's proposal wasn't to remove the "Lok Sabha constituency" tag, but rather change to Chennai North Lok Sabha constituency. It reads ok that ways, but it's apparently not the standard way in which constituencies are marked here on WP. -SpacemanSpiff 19:14, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
I guess I misunderstood. I'm easy with either format - though the parentheses-less format is perhaps the more accurate because Lok Sabha Constituency is not really a qualifier. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 19:45, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
I would oppose it for the following reason: non-Indians will not be familiar with the term "Lok Sabha" and may confuse the name. For example: Chennai North Lok Sabha constituency. Indians will understand that this is "Chennai North" "Lok Sabha constituency". An unfamilar person may take it as "Chennai North Lok Sabha" "constituency". The parantheses keep things in perspective. --Deepak D'Souza (talk) 04:26, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Wouldn't it be easier if it were Chennai North Parliamentary Constituency? Can't the article spell it out as the lower house? This way it would make sense to someone who is not familiar with India. Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 14:49, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
We always handle disambiguations with brackets. The lok sabha town name conflicts with the actual town and so the disambiguation. Why not create redirects for what you are proposing? They come cheap. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:53, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
well, the constitution has a name for it, Parliamentary constituency. --CarTick 00:26, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
