Non Free image alert

I do not actually know where to report this type of problem? Anyway a new user [1] is starting a portfolio of image related vandalism - including replacing pictures with large HQ files and uploading images of BLP's and passing them off as their own work, effectively releasing them into commons - despite the upload names matching file names when you click and save on a Google images search - you know the type "picture x 6757-87-00000.jpg"Rain the 1 00:34, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thank you for taking the time to offer a reply. I think I will leave the editor to uploading non-free images until someone with the correct standing deal with it. If it takes that long for me to solve a problem that can be seen to in five minutes by an admin - my time is probably going to be better spent expanding articles or something. Hopefully an admin is alerted and prevents them from making a larger scale problem. But they do appear to have stopped now, which is good.Rain the 1 18:55, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Screwdrivers

Why does your page on screwdrivers totally suck? Why does it fail to explain the reason for the success of the Philips screwdriver is ease of assembly because the screwdriver does not come out as it does with a slot screw. Why does it say that a Phillips screw can be turned with a flat screwdriver? Any complaint about the quality of an article can be resolved by improving the article, which you are invited to do, provided that your coverage of the material is not comprised of original research, is presented with a neutral tone and is backed by reliable sources. Agree with Cyphoidbomb, you may wish to read WP:BOLD which will alert you to the fact that we are all volunteers and if you are passionate and have expertise on a subject than really why haven't you made a contribution of that knowledge to wikipedia? Oh and "totally sucks" isn't exactly the way you encourage other wikipedians to enlighten you on subject matter here, which is really what Wikipedia is all about. Perhaps it is your turn to pass your knowledge on by adding to articles instead of sitting in the popcorn seats. To quote TR: It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. I write now for Bulls.com, but previously for the Chicago Tribune and have written books on Michael Jordan and have been honored by the Basketball Hall of Fame. But the entry you have has been a joke and inaccurate for several years. Now I find some of my publishers have been using wikipedia for biographical information of me. So I'd like to offer an accurate biography, assuming you would be interested in that. Odd Image Discoloration

I contributed myself "My Name" to "Eustis FL" and neglected to include <ref>CUNY retirees<ref> as a reference and verification - I'm 82 years old and have finally given up accessing FAQ's, info, instructions and Help. I would like to correct the entry and have it accepted - help?

I'm sorry but unless there is an article here about you, you shouldn't be added to a list of notable residents. That's the way those lists of notable residents work. Agree with Dismas, thou we all are famous in our own minds you may wish to read Wikipedia:Notability instead of the "FAQ's, info, instructions and Help" you've mentioned. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a residence listing, social media site or community networking rolodex. Notability would require WP:RELIABLESOURCES, basically if I see you on TV, hear about you on radio talkshows and read about you in the newspaper then adding your entry to "Notable residents" would be something to explore. However WP:COI or Conflict of Interest would rule out someone such as yourself actually making the addition yourself, one or a team of wikipedians would actually discuss that and do it for you, of course after the Oprah interview and the TMZ scoop on you. :-) Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 08:01, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Change image

He asked me to change the image of his wikipedia article as he disliked the image, I tried to change it to one he approved of and it didnt work can someone help me. I don't see where you've uploaded an image. You must first upload the image (see WP:UPLOAD) and then it can be used in articles. Though, judging from the description you gave to the image you were trying to add, it would likely not be acceptable. Magazine covers can only be used if the magazine itself is discussed. And they cannot be used simply to illustrate the person on the cover for that person's article. If you have a photo that you own the rights to, you can upload it to Wikimedia Commons so that it can be used on all the different language versions of Wikipedia. (just uploading to the English version means that the file can only be used here and not on, for example, the German Wikipedia) Dismas|(talk) 07:07, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see you uploaded File:Master Rhee Chong Chul in Action.jpg at Wikimedia Commons. You claimed it was your own work and you are the copyright holder. I suggest you write out any abbreviations or acronyms such as BE, B.Tech and MNC which I don't have any idea what your speaking of. Removing references

The Dutch Wikipedia community has a weak policy on citing sources and users have reached consensus that only controversial facts need source references. User:Dqfn13 has previously removed references from an article I've edited on the Dutch Wikipedia. He has now started removing references from the same article on the English Wikipedia [2] [3]. Hi, this is no vandalism, this is removing citation that are not needed. WP:VERIFY states: Attribute all quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. (bold by me) I don't think anybody will chalenge who's the director of a museum, and nobody will chalenge the location of that same museum, will they? I have not removed any other refferences as I know the English Wiki is more strickt with citations.
Now, I am chalenging the source itself, as the source about the location is very reliable... but it is the contact page of the museum website... very reliable but it also smells like promoting the museum. Hi Dqfn13, first if you wish to challenge a source it's best to discuss it first on the articles Talk page, not just delete the references from the article. Such a thing can be seen as acting without WP:AGF and yes can be viewed by many as vandalism. Second, it is encouraged a lot to add citations for such things as "director" etc. since those items have and will continue to be challenged for citations on Wikipedia, not to mention the sideways WP:BLP concerns it raises. As you should discuss on the article's talk page or even ask for a WP:3O you will find that using a source or citation that seems promotional when it is published by the subject of the article is not by itself forbidden and in many instances encouraged when balanced with other citations. Either way many editors will get the wrong idea about your intentions if you start deleting parts of articles without any notice on the talk page, most especially references or citations for those articles. Well, forget it... I'm not going to do it all over again, on the Dutch talkpage Editor was challenged by three other editors (besides me) and now he/she does it all again on the English Wiki. I'm not doing it all over. I've added my reasons both times in the summary, that should be enough. Editor acts like the article is his/hers, from this day on I don't care about it anymore. This source fot the adress of the museum... that's the contactpage... so instead of just giving the adress you can send an e-mail. That was one fo the reasons why it was removed from the Dutch article. I've not removed other sources for the theft even though they were challenged at the Dutch talk page... I've only removed refs I thought (and stil think) were obselete. Clearly Editor didn't listen to the others as he/she does exactly the same here. Be my guest, I won't bother you anymore, the article is all yours, maybe add some more refs so every single sentence has its source. Because that happend at the Dutch page too. But here at the English Wikipedia, you are 100% incorrect - we want every sentence to have a cited source. And when you cite WP:V: "Attribute all quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged to a reliable, published source using an inline citation," you're misreading it. That statement specifies the minimum necessary sourcing of information, not the maximum. Please don't confuse the rules on two different Wikipedias - if the Dutch Wikipedia wants minimal citations, fine, but here at the English Wikipedia, if you remove a good source for a non-controversial statement, that is wrong - on any article in the English Wikipedia. (I have no idea what an "obsolete" reference is - either the reference still provides support for the text in the article - so we want to keep it - or it does not - so we want to remove it. The Dutch Wiki does ask for citations in case something is (likely to be) challenged, and an adres of a museum is NOT likely to be challenged. But fine, I'll back off. End of discussion. This extreme referencing makes articles hard to read because in the worst cases there are a dozen of numbers instead of text... ever thought about that? Should brief members of a band/group still be considered as 'former members'?

Hi, guys. I just want to ask about Wikipedia's standards when it comes to articles about bands/members. So let's say two original members left and then the talent agency announces that two new members are added. Later on when the group gears up for a comeback single, those 'two' replacements are no longer there and have been replaced by three newer ones. So are the two previous replacements still worth being considered as 'former members?. They never really released any music with the group hence they didn't debut with them. Is this concerning a currently live wikipedia article? If so discussing this on that band's article's talk page or the Wikiproject for bands or that genre of music might find you editors familiar with the ins and outs of band member listing consensus. If this band doesn't have a wikipedia article as yet we might have to go back a bit and understand if notability or WP:RELIABLESOURCES have been met. I understand your asking it as a policy question but the specific band would help, and thou I'm no expert on the matter the situation you describe I wouldn't think those members that released no music should be listed just as a matter of WP:COMMONSENSE a pillar above policies. Technically speaking isn't the reason Sock Puppetry is so wrong is because an editor is pretending to be someone they are not? I understand that it also has the whole IP component but the effect of what you are saying is the same, the impression is given that the edit is by an uninvolved 3rd party when in fact it is not. Checking out the user ID and the contributions it seems to be just a random thing for now, it may die out on its own. If this was me I wouldn't feed the trolls but use your best judgment on elevating it with either a message back to the IP or a noticeboard alert. Too often a few individuals get their jollies by counting how many wikipedians were involved in their banishment so ignoring them for a day might actually work much better, but again depends exactly what he/she is going to do next. As suggested above, leaving it for a while may be the best solution; if it continues, however, it is in contravention of Wikipedia's signature guidelines. Per WP:SIGFORGE, "Never use another editor's signature. Impersonating another editor by using his or her username or signature is forbidden. Altering the markup code of your signature to make it look substantially like another user's signature may also be considered a form of impersonation. Editing the code of your signature to link it to another editor's user page is not permitted." I fixed the title for you, also please remember to end with ~~~~ so we can all see who you are (your signature). For the answer to your question you might find Wikipedia:Uploading images most useful. Once the image is at Wikipedia or Commons the coding is pretty simple on the actual article, just be sure it meets fair use by checking at Wikipedia:Non-free content. Good luck and happy editing. I see your article is currently at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Market Simplified. I guess the logo you want to add is http://www.marketsimplified.com/images/msf_logo.png. Please note that this logo might be sufficiently complex for copyright protection (if it is, then this is mainly because of the reflection effect and the small triangle, otherwise this logo would be in the public domain because logos consisting only of letters and typefaces are not normally eligible for copyright protection). If it is eligible for copyright protection, then it can be uploaded to Wikipedia only as non-free content, and such content is only allowed in the article when it is live on Wikipedia (ie in the mainspace / article space). -- Toshio Yamaguchi 12:43, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

resolved, but not that easily; commons is under the impression that their filenames ALWAYS have precedence & it is the responsibility of other projects to rename conflicting files...

Commons is right in this case. Renaming a Commons file causes the image to "break" on every page in every Wikipedia that uses it - for popular images that can be hundreds of pages - most in languages that the person doing the change doesn't understand. Begin a discussion at the article Talk page at the bottom of the page. Specify what material you think the article should include. Bear in mind Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not the internet. Bubbo Jones- Bubbojones (name) availability for an account

I wanna know if the "Bubbo Jones," you have with an "already exsisting" account connected here at wiki to my email address? I've been trying to create and write my wiki, and others, however with my name being "bubbojones" "Bubbo Jones" "Bubbo J" and I may have initially tried to set something up over the last three years past, and now I can't create it, but when I hit ur search? It says that I can create this account, but it won't let me. What part of the game is this? (?) Compare the pages User:I'm bubbojones and User:Bubbo Jones. You can see that yours has an "email this user" link in the toolbox bottom left. The other page doesn't. That means that no email address is attached to that account. As that account has never made any edits, you may be able to take it over. See WP:Usurp. Rojomoke (talk) 14:25, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Does it strictly mean that no email address is attached to the account, or might it merely be that the "Enable email from other users" option hasn't been enabled in the user's preferences? It might merely mean that "Enable email from other users" hasn't been enabled, but in this case there really is no email address attached. The difference can be seen at Special:EmailUser/Bubbo Jones which says "This user has not specified a valid email address." If the user had stored an email address without enabling email from other users then it would have said "This user has chosen not to receive email from other users." I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Deleted Page for Richard Helm

I recently purchased the book described below:

Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software is a software engineering book describing recurring solutions to common problems in software design. The book's authors are Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson and John Vlissides with a foreword by Grady Booch. The authors are often referred to as the Gang of Four, GoF,[1] or Go4.

There is a Wikipedia page for each of the authors, known as the Gang of Four, but for some reason the page for Richard Helm has been deleted. It seems odd that the one author's page would be deleted. 216.64.170.61 (talk) 17:35, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits have been reversed, both to repair the damage and because it seems fairly clear ("attempted to add our software") that you have a conflict of interest in trying to add this software to that article. A shameless advertisement for the American Media Institute, Richard Miniter and Nathaniel Moffat was deleted, since we don't permit promotion and marketing here. There was nothing worth salvaging. If you feel the Institute is notable enough to justify an encyclopedia article about it (as opposed to being a mere paragraph in the Miniter article), you should create one from scratch, using only reliable sources and maintaining a neutral point-of-view towards the subject. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:41, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Copied and Pasted Error

I wrote a bio about a chef and it's on that chef's website. I'm trying to create a wikipedia page about that chef and it's saying that I copied and pasted. When something is posted to a web site, it is assumed that there is a copyright on that work which does not allow for the information to simply be copied and pasted into another site. If there is a copyright notice on the page that says that the text is under public domain or some other such free license, then we can use it. That said, we generally prefer things to be written differently because text on web sites is often much too promotional in tone to be encyclopedic. I need to add two more countries (Montenegro and Serbia) but I don't know how to do it. I tried with these codes but it doesn't work:

I can see you are editing articles by clicking the "edit" link. That makes it hard to see some things. If you click the "edit source" link instead (it appears when you hover over "edit" links at sections) then you will only see {{Average height around the world}} where the big table is displayed. That means the displayed text comes from Template:Average height around the world. You can try to edit that by carefully copying the format of the existing entries, but that type of editing can be tricky. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:23, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help in amending info in picture panel (transclusion)

I wish to revise some info on Ray Charles arising from contact with the authors of a new book, which includes new research on RC's early life

My question concerns the upper right section, beneath the picture and headed 'Background information'

I note re transclusion but it seems complicated.

1. Re the para 'Early life: 1930–45' where it mentions Greenville, Florida, I believe that if I amend that, then GF will be replaced in the box I refer to, with my new location.

Is that correct please?

2. Re Birth name which is the first item under 'Background information'. This is not linked, so where do I go to edit the birth name?

I will cite the info source + page nos. in the new book + they have census illustrations

Hope you can assist. I am an avid Wiki-ist and intend to get more involved with entries and to canvass knowledgeable friends to do the same. Thanks in anticipation

The info box that you mention can be edited by clicking on the "Edit" or "Edit Source" links at the very top of the article. The information is not pulled automatically from the body text of the article. Dismas|(talk) 20:45, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's great that you say you're going to be citing reliable sources for your edits (if you hadn't of mentioned that I probably would have broached that topic before going further). My suggestion is to click on "edit source" at the very top of the article, i.e., do no click "Edit" and do not click on the links for editing that are included above each section. This will allow you to access the entire article at once, make changes in the sections and simultaneously make changes to the 'infobox' (the box at the top right that contains his photograph). Note that your post implied to me that you thought if you changed information in one place, it would automatically change information in another. That is not the case; each tidbit of information must be changed independently; it is not transcluded information in, for example, a template that appears in both places. The "Edit" button accesses the brand new Visual Editor, but is is very new and buggy right now. "Edit source" accesses wikitext editing, which is how we all edited from 2001 until the beginning of this month. You might try first taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial before moving further, as I think you will learn a lot of helpful things. You have new messages! but no message

While deleting a pile of AFC pages under G13, I started getting a new-talkpage-messages alert, but my talk page hasn't gotten any edits in five days. Nevertheless, the message recurs when I visit new pages, even though I've already gone to my talk page. What's going on? The only way I can imagine this happening is if someone edited my talk page, and before I saw it, an oversighter came along and removed it completely, but I can imagine that such a thing would be a million-to-one chance. I left the band in 1995 and have continued to pursue a career in music as well as cinematography etc....I have a release documented on IMDB and two more are in the process of being added. I would like to update my wiki standings by adding a page in my personal name to continue documenting my work etc.....If you guys could give me some simple instruction on how to go about this it would be much appreciated. Please read WP:AUTO as to why we would strongly prefer you not add an autobiographical article about yourself. Also, please take a look at WP:BIO for the criteria for "notability" - if a person is not "notable", as defined in that guideline, then an article about that person is just going to get deleted, sooner or later (typically sooner; we delete more than 1000 articles per day here). -- John Broughton (♫♫) 00:20, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
