February 2012 wikification barnstars!

[edit]
The Greater Working Wikifier's Barnstar
Last on the alphabet but not least on the leaderboard, Wilhelmina Will, i award you this Greater Working Wikifier's Barnstar for your 4th place appearance during the February Drive. Keep it up!
The Gold Wikification Barnstar
Also, for wikifying 91 articles, wich is not just 0.999..., it's actually a full 1 (otherwise known as the atomic number of hydrogen, the most abundant chemical element ~ and that's quite something) article more that 90, which itself is an awesome number. All in all, 91 is a half-baked number and a weird geometric figure; but most of all it is the number of articles you wikified, and let's not forget that :P ~ Congratulations! benzband (talk) 21:18, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Aw, thank you, very much! :) Wilhelmina Will (talk) 21:25, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank YOU for such a good job! You may also have noticed that the Feb' Drive goal is at -120%… *chuckles* even the upcoming March Mini Drive (invites coming soon) won't be able to counterbalance that. Cheers, benzband (talk) 21:36, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes! i'm terribly sorry about this, because it's my fault for not putting the info on the Drive page, but the March Mini is only a 15-day drive, from 8 March 2012 (00:00 AM) to 24 March 2012 (00:00 AM) ~ therefore the "Mini" nickname. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Wikify#March Mini 2012 ^^ for further information (the two-week was suggested by Nolelover here). I am going to update the Drive page (thanks again for making me realize that omission), and shall be distributing "invitations" to WP:WWF members tomorrow. I would greatly appreciate it if you'd please excuse me on this one and also not log any further until March 8. Best of luck! :) benzband (talk) 22:19, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Of course! I'll even cancel out those two logs I already made, so that the count is fair! :) Wilhelmina Will (talk) 07:34, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers benzband (talk) 16:50, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, let's work on Talk:Gordon P. Saville/GA2 this week or next, okay? Best... Binksternet (talk) 16:37, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing! After I've wrapped up reviewing Cornelio Saavedra, I'll be right over there! :) Wilhelmina Will (talk) 01:16, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've gotten started on Saville's article review. I'll have to alternate between this one and the other GA I'm still reviewing; it's time I got them both finished. To the tune of "Miss You": "I'll be runnin' back and forth, I'll be reviewing Corney and Gord, heavens I'm busy!" :P Like my singing? Ha-la-la-la-la-la-LA-LAAA!!! Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Cornelio Saavedra

[edit]

Thanks for your recent review of the article about Cornelio Saavedra, your advises were very useful. I have nominated now the article May Revolution, one of the events detailed in Saavedra's biography, at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/May Revolution/archive4. Being an obscure topic for people outside of Argentina, very few people made reviews in the past. As you have read this other article and I hope you now have some basic idea of what had happened, t would be helpful if you could take some time to check this one and provide comments. Help Needed

[edit]

Inspired by your page, I have taken the first step in clearing the Great Wiki Backlog. Just alloted GeoCoordinates to some pages on Delhi. But the category is not reflecting those changes and the articles are still there. Please advise. User:AkshaySeth20 (talk)AkshaySeth20 (talk) 10:54, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm delighted that you're inspired to help with the drive! As for those articles, I believe the problem may be that while you've added the coordinates, you've not removed the tag which stated that they were missing. Take for instance, the article Tomb of Balban. In this edit, after yours, I removed the tag - they are usually placed near the bottom of the page, in the realm of the categories, as this one was. The article should no longer be listed in the category for Delhi articles needing coordinates. Hope that helps! :) Like my singing? Ha-la-la-la-la-la-LA-LAAA!!! Hi Wilhelmina Will !
No sources and references have been given for this article on an local Indian politician - Ram Kumar Walia. The NPOV seem to be suspect. Please advise. User:AkshaySeth20 (talk)AkshaySeth20 (talk) 12:13, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, AkshaySeth20! Well now, about this article and its tags. The article does appear to have references, though it is preferred if inline citations or Harvard-referencing style is used to connect the information presented in the article to the source from which it is derived (see the guide on citing sources for more). However, what the tag is saying is that the two sources linked in the article are to websites in association with the subject of the article; in other words, primary sources. Primary sources are generally concrete verification of whatever information they present, but an article which is completely or mostly dependant on them is considered an issue for the following reasons:
  • Neutrality and purpose of the article: Secondary and tertiary sources, or third-party sources as they are commonly called, are a desired feature for all articles in Wikipedia, because they are published by people and organizations which are not in close, if any, affiliation with the subject. This provides a better chance for neutrality, and leaves less reason to suspect that the article is what we call a vanity page.
  • Notability of the subject: The more covered a subject is by reputable third-party sources, e.g. newspapers and magazines (or media in general), books, universities, essays and their ilk, the more likely it is to be a subject worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia. Any topic can have official websites dedicated to it, but far fewer topics are mentioned extensively in websites and other formats not in connection with them. I have no doubt that a member of the Indian National Congress qualifies as a notable subject, but third-party sources are still preferred. The link I provided about the citing of first-party sources will give a more in-depth description.
I should also refer you to this page, on what sorts of sources are considered reputable; this is a whole other dimension to the puzzle, but is equally important. The primary sources can still be used in the article, of course; a popular method of incorporating such sources is under a section labeled "External links", for listing sites which may provide extra information or give a different insight on the topic. As for the neutrality of this article as it stands, I can't see anything immediately wrong with it; most likely the tag about its point of view was added there together with the primary source tag out of concern for the lack of tertiary references. I hope this helps! :) Like my singing? Ha-la-la-la-la-la-LA-LAAA!!! (talk) 10:11, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2012 March newsletter

[edit]

We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well! Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.

Congratulations to Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to Florida 12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!

It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Redirects

[edit]

Hello Wilhelmina, I am currently working on some small families and noticed you created redirects for species to genus pages (i.e. Issikiocrania japonicella), but you didn't actually describe the species on the genus page. Could I ask you not to do this? The link will turn blue in country lists, while there are really isnt an article about the species. I am going to add the species info now, so it will be fixed in this case. Would you happen to know if you did this more often? If so, could you tell me which redirects you made, so I can try and add info on the species? Thanks! Ruigeroeland (talk) 13:43, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can't recall any other instances like that, at least not recent ones. But Ruigeroeland, that article did mention the species, under a heading in list format. I redirected it because it looked like a monotypic genus. I'll certainly avoid doing that in the future, and if I can resurrect any recollections of other monotypic redirects I made, without more in-depth mention, I'll see about correcting them. Thanks for the notification! :) Like my singing? Ha-la-la-la-la-la-LA-LAAA!!! (talk) 00:12, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE March drive wrap-up

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Zipcode Zoo is a no-no

[edit]

Hello Wilhelmina. Could I ask you to switch sources for the creation of your Glyphipterigidae articles? Zipcode Zoo is (please escuse my French) absolute crap. It is better to use LepIndex instead. You can generate a synonymic list per family there. This was also used by Zipcode Zoo to create there "list of species", but sadly, they forgot to treat synonyms and subspecies in another way than species, the result is that a lot of "species" listed on Zipcode Zoo are in fact synonyms. The family Glyphipterigidae list is found at: [1]. Please note that it is somewhat out-of-date, but it is a reasonable starting point. Ruigeroeland (talk) 09:55, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help in identifying the fishes

[edit]

I came to you because I noticed you are a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes. I have taken some photos of marine fishes near rivermouth in Digha, India. Here are the photos - Type 1 and Type 2. I cannot identify the fishes, but I need to know their names. Could you identify those fishes? I asked this question is Science ref desk, but it looks like the ref desk regulars also failed in the identification. --SupernovaExplosion Talk 15:24, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, SupernovaExplosion! Unfortunately I am not an expert on fish; my contributions to the project are mainly in the gathering of published information on different species/genera/etc. into articles, especially ones which did not exist prior. I cannot tell you with certainity by examining the pictures what these fish are, but the ones in the first photograph look as though they may be some form of eel. I think I've seen specimens of the second variety depicted, but I cannot recall the name of the classification; if I can remember it at some point I'll be sure to mention it. Like my singing? WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

[edit]

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's New York City Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions) and United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, England Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Bavaria Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) and Bavaria Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! I see you would like to become an administrator. I am wondering if I can nominate you for it? --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 21:37, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am flattered, but I'm not sure I'm quite ready for adminship yet. I applied once in late May 2010, but I was not considered ready then, as I did not have sufficient experience in a number of fields administrators are expected to cover. I really hope to qualify someday soon, but I want to make sure I've left nothing unfinished first. Thank you very much for your kind offer, however! It really made my day! :) Like my singing? Ha-la-la-la-la-la-LA-LAAA!!! (talk) 22:25, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE May mid-drive newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

[edit]

Hello Wilhelmina. I noticed you are now working on the Adelidae family. Please note that the species lists in the genera we have on wikipedia are very incomplete. If you want to tackle the whole family, you will need to use another source. You could use LepIndex again, although it seems somewhat out-of-date regarding this family, but this is not a big problem because I will gladly help searching for the current taxonomy of the articles you create. For a complete check-list of the family, see: [2]. Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 08:13, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2012 May newsletter

[edit]

We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Scotland Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, New York City Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! GOCE May drive wrap-up

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. We will be accepting nominations for the fourth tranche of coordinators, who will also serve a six-month term. Nominations will open starting on June 5. For complete information, please have a look at the election page. – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, and Stfg

Hello there Wilhelmina, I noticed you started working on the Tischeriidae family. Furthermore, you have listed Tischerioidea as the family in all of your taxoboxes. That should be Tischeriidae. Could you also add the synonyms? They are all listed at the site I mentioned earlier..! Cheers and thanks Ruigeroeland (talk) 13:41, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Aw drat, I forgot that Tischerioidea was the name of the superfamily! I just copied and pasted the title of the page. :} Thanks for the tips, and that point-out! :) Like my singing? Ha-la-la-la-la-la-LA-LAAA!!! (talk) 22:29, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In your recent article edits, you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

[edit]

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

[edit]

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:37, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
