2012 Guild of Copy Editors Coordinators Election status

Overview
[edit]The project coordinators will be generally responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They will be the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and will be responsible for ensuring that the project as a whole is properly informed of them.
To provide some examples of coordinator duties: the coordinators will manage the proposal and creation of new task forces; ensure that project announcement and task lists are kept up-to-date; initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project; organize the category system; oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods; create and maintain collaborative projects if any; maintain the project page and the various guidelines in it in a clean and easy-to-use state; monitor technical policies and ensure that project templates satisfy them, and assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives.
They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions or concerns.
The coordinator positions will not entail any executive power.
Positions
[edit]- Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.
- Assistant Coordinator (two open positions): will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.
Election process
[edit]- The election process will run for two weeks, from June 16, 00:01 UTC, until June 30, 23:59 UTC.
Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under "Nominations" below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.Nominations are now closed.
- The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support a nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
- Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or make general comments.
Stfg

- Hi, I'm Stfg. I started in the GOCE for the March 2011 drive and have been copy editing since then. I became an assistant coordinator in January 2012. I have been maintaining the requests and archive pages and have helped Dianna set up and close the last three drives. If elected as lead, I would try to reactivate the mentoring scheme. Otherwise, there are no major changes that I want to initiate, but I would be happy to implement any for which consensus is reached on our main talk page. If elected as assistant, I will be happy to continue the work I've been doing up to now.

- Thanks for asking. All I know at the moment is that the scheme is stagnant: all the mentors listed on the Mentorship page are marked as busy; in fact only one of them is very active on Wikipedia at present. Occasionally, people come along with requests for mentorship and are turned away. I don't know whether this is soluble, but I think it's worth a try. When the scheme started, only GOCE coordinators were to be mentors. That restriction was removed, but possibly too late and not conspicuously enough to attract new mentors. Maybe the main thing to do is to publicise that we'd be glad if experienced copy editors would make known if they are willing to do it.
- There's one other consideration: wikipedia copy editors actually need two quite distinct skill sets: writing skills and wikipedia stuff like markup, deletions, merges, how to deal with suspected copyright and so on. We do have some great writers here, I wonder if we could persuade them to mentor people for writing skills if we can somehow cover the second thing. Or maybe vice versa.
- I don't propose to do anything on this during the July drive, but in August I would like to start some discussion on the talk page and possibly follow that up by messaging a few people I know to be great writers to ask what they might be willing to do. --Stfg (talk) 09:59, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Hi there. I've been a member of the GOCE and participating in backlog drives since the first one in May 2010. I was drafted into being a coordinator about a year ago, so I've done it before, albeit for a short term. I'm up for getting the position the hard way this time. I know my way around the place and should be able to provide help with just about everything, from navigating the project's many policy pages to discussing the finer points of copy editing rules.

- Hello! I like to help; it's one reason that I'm a (teaching) professor. I am finding that the GOCE is one place that I can help out around Wikipedia; I prefer copyediting to writing (with my 473-page dissertation being an example of doing the latter). Even within the GOCE, I want to help things move along smoothly; for instance, during the May drive I reviewed 43% of the articles reviewed (35% of the reviewed words). I know these statistics from another way that I've helped out - a program I wrote to help the coordinators with awarding barnstars and tracking various activities during the drive. (As it is, it took poor Simon/Sftg most of a day to work out the barnstars.) You can see the program at User:Allens/GOCE/GOCE.barnstars2.pl, for anyone who happens to know Perl, and its output at User:Allens/GOCE/GOCE.barnstars2.pl.output1, which is probably of more interest for most; a rough draft of its documentation is at User:Allens/GOCE. (I am ready and willing to alter the program as needed, whether or not I am a coordinator, as well as running it after each drive.) Another program that I'm considering, if it's of interest, is one to keep track of GOCE-edited articles that have been subsequently awarded GA or FA status - I manually track this for myself already at my homepage, but would like for the entire project to be able to show how much of a difference we've made. I am also, of course, ready and willing to help in whatever other way(s) I can.

Diannaa has served as a GOCE coordinator in every term since the role was created, was lead coordinator in July–December 2011, has taken part in every GOCE backlog elimination drive, and has been a constant and dependable source of support and encouragement to her fellow copy editors through all this time. The other two current GOCE coordinators, Dank and Stfg, propose that Diannaa be appointed Coordinator Emeritus for as long as she wishes to continue in the role. The appointment would be in addition to the coordinators selected in this election. Please Support, Oppose or Comment below.

- Coordinators have a job with no authority, just a little recognition, so it wouldn't matter whether this gives her the "power" of a coordinator ... there isn't any. I think what's proposed here is similar to the role of "coordinator emeritus" at WP:MILHIST; the few people who put in an extraordinary amount of effort for a long time in a leadership role get the "luxury", eventually, of not having to run every time there's a coord election. It seems like a reasonably useful title to me, particularly since removing them from elections shifts focus from the old guard to newer folks. - Dank (push to talk) 14:59, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
