ON A NEW TITANOSAUR SAUROPOD FROM THE BAURU GROUP, LATE CRETACEOUS OF BRAZIL 1 (With 28 figures) ALEXANDER W. A. KELLNER 2, 3, 4 DIOGENES DE ALMEIDA CAMPOS 3, 5 SERGIO A. K. de AZEVEDO 2, 3, 6 MARCELO N. F. TROTTA 2, 7 DEISE D. R. HENRIQUES 2 MAUREEN M. T. CRAIK 2, 8 HELDER DE PAULA SILVA 2, 9 ABSTRACT: Four field seasons (1998, 2000, 2001 and 2002) organized by the Paleovertebrate Sector of the Museu Nacional at Campina Verde – Prata road, at a site known as Serra da Boa Vista some 45km west to the Prata town, Minas Gerais State resulted in the discovery of a medium sized titanosaur sauropod dinosaur, with an estimated length of 13m. Maxakalisaurus topai n.gen., n.sp. consists of a partial skeleton found in fine to medium grained sandstones of the Adamantina Formation (Late Cretaceous), Bauru Group, and is the fifth unequivocal titanosaur species described from Brazil. It has the anterior and middle caudal vertebrae with dorsoventrally compressed centra, the midposterior caudal vertebrae have the lateral surface of the centrum strongly concave (spool-shaped), and show at least one biconvex element. Maxakalisaurus topai is also distinguished by having a metacarpal IV about 12% shorter than metacarpal II, among other features. The compressed anterior and most middle caudal vertebrae suggest that the new species is in close relationship with the Saltasaurinae, a hypothesis that needs further testing. Key words: Dinosauria. Sauropoda. Titanosauria. Cretaceous. Brazil. INTRODUCTION The dinosaur record in Brazil is very poor and despite numerous localities, the majority of the material consists of incomplete specimens or isolated bones (KELLNER & CAMPOS, 2000). Over 10 years ago, GOLDBERG et al. (1995) have reported the occurrence of dinosaur remains in outcrops of the Adamantina Formation at the Serra da Boa Vista, situated on the Campina Verde - Prata road, some 45km west to the Prata town, Minas Gerais State (Fig.1). Four field seasons (1998, 2000, 2001 and 2002) were organized by the Paleovertebrate Sector of the Museu Nacional and resulted in the recovery of a medium sized titanosaur sauropod. This specimen was briefly mentioned in the literature (HENRIQUES et al., 1998; HENRIQUES et al., 2002) and is fully described here.

TAPHONOMIC ASPECTS Maxakalisaurus topai was found in an area of 40m² in a fine to medium grained reddish sandstone above a thin conglomeratic layer. Sedimentological studies indicate that those rocks were formed in a fluvial depositional environment where semi-arid condition, with dry and wet alternate periods predominated (GOLDBERG & GARCIA, 2000). Fossils were not collected in adjacent areas. The assemblage comprises disarticulated bones, but the cervicals and three caudals were found partially articulated. Among the recovered elements are an incomplete jaw with the last five preserved alveoli, the first four of which still bearing teeth, sternal plates, vertebrae, transverse processes, chevrons, ribs and limb bones (Fig.2). Except for two extra sternal plates, and a distal end of a right scapula, that belong to a second animal attributed to Maxakalisaurus topai, and one caudal vertebra that may or may not pertain to this species (see discussion), the bones recovered were closely associated. In the lack of more evidence, we consider those bones as belonging to the same individual (MN 5013-V). As far as comparison is possible, there is no size discrepancy among the recovered elements. Some isolated vertebral centra and neural arches suggest that this was a still young animal at time of death, with bones relatively more fragile. Maxakalisaurus topai bones were recovered along with several isolated theropod and crocodylomorph teeth, turtle elements and some small non-dinosaurian hollow bones. Bioturbation is present in several levels, sometimes in close connection with the dinosaur elements.

Type species – Maxakalisaurus topai new species, type by monotypy. Etymology – The generic name is formed by Maxakali, from one of the Macro-jê stock language, honoring the Maxakali ethnic group that is present in the Minas Gerais State where this dinosaur was found, and saurus, which is the Greek word for lizard, commonly assigned to fossil reptiles. Diagnosis – The same as for the species. Maxakalisaurus topai n.sp.

Type locality – MN 5013-V was collected about 45km west of the Prata town, at the Prata – Campina Verde road, in a region called Serra da Boa Vista, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Geological setting – The specimen was collected in a fine to medium grained reddish sandstone that has been regarded as part of the Adamantina Formation, Bauru Group, Upper Cretaceous (GOLDBERG et al., 1995; DIAS-BRITO et al., 2001; GOBBO-RODRIGUES et al., 1999). (ON A NEW TITANOSAUR SAUROPOD FROM THE BAURU GROUP, LATE CRETACEOUS OF BRAZIL 7 Bol. Mus. Nac., N.S., Geol., Rio de Janeiro, n.74, p.1-31, ago.2006 Maxakalisaurus.

Thank you again, that helps hugely. Just one more thing, can I list the publications that Colin Hampden-White has been published in? These publications have online content, but the pages on which Colin Hampden-White has pictures are only found in the real thing. It does mean that if anyone should check with the publications they will find the published photographs.

An example would be the FT another would be EM Magazine, www.emmagazine.co.uk which has there current issue online (in which Colin Hampden-White is published, written and photographic work). However he has been published in all but one of the EM magazines, they just don't have the back issues online. So can I list the FT and EM (amongst others) on his biog?

Many thanks again

Orphaned non-free media (Image:ISLT Logo 72 dpi.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:ISLT Logo 72 dpi.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:15, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

As is the usual with these articles, most get deleted before the creator can even check on it. But it's obvious this one isn't going away easily... Should I tell a moderator, and then will this get cleaned up? This person should have atleast requested the article instead of remaking the deleted material. Sorry but what was wrong with my addition to the office 2007 page? Sorry. I'm new at the new-page protocols. I thought the hangon tag was for contesting deletion. I honestly don't know whether the topic is notable, but I'd at least like to make the case that it is. How do I do that? I thought it was put a hangon tag there and discuss on the talk page. Leadwind (talk) 21:17, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. I always forget about doing early drafts as special project pages. Before I go to all that work, is there a way to pass the topic by some editors to see whether it's notable? Leadwind (talk) 00:10, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that you removed the link to Micahel Meyer von Bremen's site ( http://www.mvbcourtofappeals.com/ ) . I read the entry guiding External Links but I was unable to find the reason in the guidelines that would exclude it's use as it is the official site of the person of whom the article is written and thus an external authority for information about him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.206.161.101 (talk) 14:38, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Hello Ukexpat- I'm not normally one to complain about deletions or anything, but I have to disagree with the speedy you placed on the page Lachlan Maury Vass. You tagged it as a failure to indicate why the subject is important (category A7) when it is clear that the article does so, even if it does not establish full notability at the moment. I'm removing the tag for the time being. --Several Times (talk) 20:57, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Since when is a myth patent nonsense? The legend of Nomad Willy is known in Michigan. There is a band named after him. And there is undoubtedly some truth to the story, see the project, buried in the blues, at www.buriedintheblues.com. There were lots and lots of blues musicians buried in unmarked graves, these folks historically had little money to live on, and none to die on. The project buried in the blues is to raise money to commemorate these pioneers of blues music by placing grave markers on their graves, once they identify who they were, and where they were buried. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Katishelton (talkcontribs) 21:48, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

In what way is Phoebus design automation not a candidate for speedy deletion under G11? The article was created by a user with the same name as the company, and it uses promotional language. Michael Foale's nationality

Since Michael Foale's father (Colin) is British and his mother (Mary) is American, the astronaut holds US-UK dual citizenship by birth. In general, NASA flies only US citizens as career astronauts. Foale did not have to become an American, as did astronauts Piers Sellers and Nicholas Patrick, because he is already American. The UK press often get Foale's nationality details wrong, and one must be careful to avoid leaking such into Wikipedia. See the scuba article http://www.divernet.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?id=5966&sc=&ac=d&an= to read more about all three British-born astronauts who currently work for NASA. I've revised navbar according to some of my own (and one of DaRkAge7's suggestions.) Then I changed your template to change all of your transclusions (sorry). The new Navbar now:

  • detects automatically your username using BASEPAGENAME
  • can use the new option shorten option to shorten the navbar by shortening the common links.
  • displays "Purge cache" instead of the more confusing "Purge" (shorten will turn it back to "Purge")
  • had the documentation fixed so people now know that not all browsers can support the Navbar as floating text. The same message also convinces users to place the Navbar in an inline-friendly location.

Hi Ukexpat,

I am asking for a big favours of yours. I nominated the article Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria) for featured list, but there were too many small grammar problems, so we decided to withdraw it, and do a peer review first. The list is complete and very well sourced. It also followed all he suggestions given in Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium) (recently promoted to featured list), so in general is in a very good shape. Only the description fields for the coins are in a need of a good copy/edit. Can you please help us to get this list promoted?

I've been working on a Frazier Quarry page and I'm not ready to put it up yet. I was wondering if I could show it to you to look over so that i doesn't appear to be spamming. That hasn't been the intention of any of my pages but it has been interpreted as such.

Thanks, Andy.W.Ellis (talk) 14:47, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Woodhull Freedom Foundation & Federation

If you've returned to the page, you'll note that many of your issues have been resolved. Some are still in progress. Will you take a look at the site now and see if any of the tags you put up can be removed, please? Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by RicciJoy (talkcontribs) 12:32, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Shenandoah Valley Bluestone

Hi,

I made a page that discussed Shenandoah Valley Bluestone in a fair amount of detail and would be able to add more onto it, I did not want to take up tons of space on the bluestone and so thought it more prudent to make another more specific page if anyone cared. Would you mind looking over the shenandoah valley bluestone page and see if you think the deletion was warranted?

Full names unknown

Hello. I'm not sure if there is any policy around using a disambig in a title if the full name of a person is unknown. There seems to be a loose convention in the cricket project to use a qualifier so that we have W Chapman (Nottinghamshire cricketer). The point is that it is not known if Chapman was William or Walter or Wurzel; whereas we do know that WG Grace was called William Gilbert. Personally I don't mind either way but obviously W. Chapman is less cumbersome! However, I think we should qualify a surname only: hence Hicks (Essex cricketer)Regards. BlackJack | talk page 00:33, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Fine. I'll go with that. Anything to make things easier! All the best. BlackJack | talk page 00:47, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Anekantavada still copy edit is required

Hi UKexpat, You had copy edited Anekantavada some time back. Subsequently many changes were made and this article was promoted to GA and now it is a candidate for FAC. However some concerns were raised on the copy edit parts here. Request your help on this matter. Thanks--Anish (talk) 05:53, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

taking tags off page

hi ukexpat -- i appreciate all your help since i'm fairly new to writing entries. i am actually a journalist -- not a PR agent or advertising rep., so would you consider taking off the COI tag? i also fixed a lot of the text in the Houlihan Smith & Company article. will you re-read and consider taking the advertising tag off? if not, tell me what still needs to be done to it to make it not sound like an advertisement. the first paragraph is also fixed and no longer reads verbatim from the website. i added references, but i'm welcome to take suggestions as to what else needs to be referenced. thanks!! Madison1500 (talk) 15:04, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I have added references to the secondary sources which should demonstrate notablility. Thanks.--Counsel (talk) 17:13, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

This is silly. You apparently deleted the article after proof of its notability was posted on the talk page. This organization is headed by a prominent American politician and recently flew students to Washington who met with large contingents of the house, senate, senior armed forces etc. It has been covered by the media in the area and in DC. If I do not hear from you, i will seek review of this decision.--Counsel (talk) 17:38, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Ukexpat didn't delete it. Gwen did. I endorse the deletion; it was a vanity piece (complete with "mission statements") of a non-notable organization. However, it is your prerogative to go to Gwen and plead your case. Tan ǀ 39 17:43, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Ridicuolous speedy deletion

I just got one thing to say: ridiculous. Alpura is the most important daily producer in Mexico. I couldn't believe Wikipedia didn't even have an entry on it, so I assure you I will fight to death on keeping this article. I've looked everywhere for help with my wiki on some MediaWiki matters but no one answers me. However, the only thing you've been able to is to complain. What? You think Mexican brands are not important or notable. Just because you've never heard or it doesn't mean is not important. Ask any Mexican user about Alpura, and they will answer you the same. Shame on you.--Fluence (talk) 17:56, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about everything. It's just I've been a little upset since Wikimedia is not helping me at all with some request. I know it's not your fault. Mainly, I forgot to place Alpura's homepage, which is far more important than the page I had placed first. I'm trying to improve the article with the information in there.--Fluence (talk) 18:04, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

It's about MediaWiki automatic language-variants translation tabs. I asked at Meta and the Chinese Wikipedia (where it's in use, along with Serbian) how could I use it on the Nahuatl wikipedia (nah), but I didn't know where else to go. If you can tell me where to go I would be really grateful, specially after how rude I was --Fluence (talk) 21:36, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Can you copyedit the Culture section of Mangalore?

Hi there, I saw you listed at Wikipedia:PRV#General copyediting as a copyeditor. I was wondering if you would copyedit the Culture section of Mangalore which is a city article. The article is already a GA and it uses UK English. Language is very simple and the prose is quite precise. Copyediting the section won't take more than 5 minutes. Hey there, I had a simple question to ask. I made a software and decided to create an article with information about it. Now, the article is filled out with information, yet it lacks sources and references. If I created the product, is it still mandatory to add the sources?

Request for massive favour on India Hose, a current FAC

Hello UKexpat, I was wondering if I could ask you for a massIve favour and help copyedit India House. This artilce is currently listed for FAC. A reviewer in the FAC mentioned quite strongly that the text is not upto the mark. I thought it would help a lot if somebody had a look and suggested any improvement, since it has already been copyedited once by another editor and once byself. Please understand that I am neither looking for your support in the FAC, nor am I asking you to comment on wether it deserves or not to be FA, since I realise this would be canvassing. Nontheless, any comments on improving the article would be extremely welcome. rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 01:37, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Speedy - I would contest that - if you tried speedy criteria on some indonesian articles you'd gut half the project :) - joking aside - the limited english of some eds would make it too easy - it is a notable tv channnel in Indonesia - please give it a day or two - some indonesian speaking eds really would struggle to cope with WP:N documentation (or at least they way they respond to my various messages) just give us a bit of time - so I am asking hangon here rather than at the page - hope that fits your citeria of what you are up to - cheers SatuSuro 14:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

you wanna weed out the N issues in there that are endemic - off you go - you have a majority of articles created by non english speakers who you wont be able to get a reaction out of in a million years - and if you really want you could halve the project in one session - and if you really want to do that dont expect a rational explanation online or offline from me either - it has taken a lot of hard work - almost a couple of years - to cope with indonesian english challenged editors - to have to deal with quick and native speaking english editors while trying to cope with indonesian editors at the same time create something that is worse than all those stupid wikistress meters - please reconsider your standards and understand the issue is a little more complicated than dealing with one english challenged tv article - SatuSuro 15:18, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

No further comment - I am not interested in that level of inflexibility - try living in Indonesia sometime and you will understand SatuSuro 15:35, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Trying to cope with non english speaking editors on the indonesia project making a mess of it - and no help with any maintenance issues at all for over a number of months has made my position of equanimity somewhat impossible to maintain - you have hit the wrong button without knowing what you have done - you simply are concerned with N - I am concerned without about a hundred issues regarding the projects credibility - I have had it - no support and simply a horde of cretins from all sides - I now know why some eds simply disappear SatuSuro 15:43, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Gone - I will - if I am still editing be somewhat more determined in defence of speedies like that in future SatuSuro 08:55, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

RockPoP - thanks - still need help regarding use of copyrighted photos for my article

Hello again - I went ahead and uploaded the article I'd written to my Sandbox, added all of the links, etc., so now I just need to understand what I can and cannot do regarding using some of Karl's photos to illustrate the article on him. He's given me written permission to use them, but they are not FREE USE or PUBLIC DOMAIN-types of photos, so I need to understand whether I should upload any of the ones he's given me and, if so, how I go about tagging the photos to make sure they are protected from unauthorized use. Once that's figured out, of course I need to understand how to convert something from my Sandbox to a "real" article. Sorry about all of the questions - thanks for your continued help and support. Tried to start new article, but it is "protected"

Hello - I attempted to follow your advice and start a new page for my Karl Ferris article, but when I completed the search and then attempted to add the page, I was shown a page with the following message - "This page is currently protected, and can be edited only by administrators." It also said something about un-necessary duplication or something to that effect... Removing Boxes at the top of the page?

Hi There,

Having read the boxes you have left at the top of the page for Colin Hampden-White I have added a couple of references, left published material on the page and expanded the page a little. Can you let me know how much is needed to have the "This article does not cite any references or sources". box taken away or the box about notability? I imagine the box about expanding the article will stay as there isn't a whole lot there yet, but there will be soon.

Deletion of Ekin Cheng Products and Endorsements - I am not the author of the page, however I read it and am wondering why you think it should be deleted. As far as I know the information there so far is accurate. I'm also pretty sure the page isn't finished. Thanks for your clarification. Do you think a line in the main page along the lines of " has been asked to endorse a number of products the most notable being...and add one or two of the most significant...might placate the author? I should point out that the Chinese Page includes these endorsements ( they call them 'advertisements') as they are a significant part of Ekin's professional life.--Meilinjade (talk) 04:17, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Your comments on my pending article

Hello - a few days back (Aug 1), you'd indicated that you wanted to make some important improvements to the article on Karl Ferris that I've written before you'd ask the Admin to unlock it and allow me to put it up, so since I haven't heard back from you, I thought that I'd follow-up to see when you might provide that assistance to me. Also - I heard back from the Wiki "Permissions" folks and they strongly suggested that I simply link to images hosted on my site (www.rockpopgallery.com) in order to avoid copyright-related issues. Hi, I wanted to fully understand the reasons for the recommendation for deletion of greenfluencer as an entry I posted. With more than 50 respectable outlets referring to the term, including Forbes and Fox News, it seems that it has qualified as a term in the psyche and not just a neologism for neologism's sake. RE: Karl Ferris article/images

Thanks again for your note. We did submit a note to the Permissions group on the subject and they told us the same thing. Karl did give me one photo of himself (a promotional photo) that I uploaded (titled Karl Ferris), so I'd to include that in the article. Beyond that, there is a short list of record album covers that feature his photographs that have already been put into the Wiki public domain - Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? and Electric Ladyland; Donovan - Gift From A Flower To A Garden and Wear Your Love Like Heaven; The Hollies - Evolution. How can I link those images into this article? Each musical artist is mentioned in my article and already linked, so can I ask you to help me add those images (or a few of them) to the article as well as his promo photo? Again, let me know what you're able to do or what you'd like me to do with your guidance. Thanks Rockpop (talk) 21:42, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
