Hi Sodabottle. I am extremely sorry for the mistake did by me. I truly trusted the work (JJ image) and judged since it was there in commons, it must be legal enough to re-produce it to other articles. But as you very rightly pointed out, it is clearly taken from web. I accept the mistake and sorry for any inconveniences on this matter. Honestly I thought since the image was there for almost more than 2 months (I guess from April), and no one found that for this long it also made me to do. In future let me be more more careful in transforming images to articles. Thanks and sorry again. Do not feel worst. ---- Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 08:19, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

No problem. One good way to check if the image is actually a own work is to check for the size of the image and the presence of metadata. If someone actually took a photo using a cellphone or a digital camera, the size/resolution will be more and the metadata will be present. Look for these and you will be able to detect copyright violations in most of the cases.--Sodabottle (talk) 08:28, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Kollywoodtoday.in

Hi, is it advisable to upload images from this site. --Commander (Ping Me) 09:26, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

No. it was found that they themselves indulge in a lot of copyright violations. Its better to avoid them.--Sodabottle (talk) 09:32, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Kamarajar image

Do you know if this was released into PD? The commons sourcing is wrong, so unless we have proof that this is a PD image, it will have to go. This looks like the standard govt use image, so maybe it was released into PD and only the license has to be updated? —SpacemanSpiff 10:07, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

I am not sure. If this is a govt image, it almost certainly wouldnt have been released into PD (TN govt doesnt do that ever). And from the image i am not sure if it is a pre-1951 one either.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:08, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Just wanted to say thanks for keeping an eye on the page. It looks like only the two of us. Cheers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:36, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

EVR

Hi, this user is repeatedly adding Kannada script to the article. He was doing the same in Rajinikanth's article and was advised/warned by multiple users but doesn't seem to listen at all. --Commander (Ping Me) 10:45, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Dont revert him again. report him to the 3RR noticeboard. He is in violation and will be blocked. I see he has been warned before for the same behaviour. --Sodabottle (talk) 13:21, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
I have made the report at the 3RR notice board.--Sodabottle (talk) 07:30, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
He has been blocked for 24 hours. Next time he reverts, cite this block at the 3rr report (or to any admin)--Sodabottle (talk) 04:25, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, for 31 hours. At first the administrator did not block him, instead gave him a final warning. But he continued his disruptive edits even after that in both the articles. I'm sure he will be doing the same after the block period. --Commander (Ping Me) 04:40, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Admins are usually hesitant to block newbies for the first time - they want to make sure every other avenue has been exhausted before using blocking. But now this guy has exhausted all the lifelines thrown at him and has been warned multiple times now. From here on, his disruptive activities will be met with quicker and longer blocks. I will keep an eye. --Sodabottle (talk) 05:02, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Population stats 2011

Hi Sodabottle. can we go and update on the pop new stats on Tamil diaspora page and all other related pages where still this fact is missing. But I do see that this was updated on some pages also. I would like your kind focus on this inclusion. ----Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 09:27, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Which 2011 stats are you referring to?. The indian census2011 ones?. Only the provisional data has been released and linguistic data hasnt come out yet. I am actually waiting for the whole census data to come out (should be here in few months). When it comes out, we can use someone with bot knowledge to do an automated update.
BTW, the update you have made to Tamil diaspora article is wrong, you have added population of tamil nadu there. Not all people in TN are tamils (by 2001 census data, only about 89% were Tamils). And there are considerably large number of tamils outside tamilnadu (in karnataka particularly). So population of tamil nadu != population of tamils in india. I will revert to the 2001 numbers. When the full 2011 data comes out we can do the correct update.--Sodabottle (talk) 09:38, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
I Agree. And thanks for immediate response. ----Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 09:45, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Keyan20, do you remember me pointing out this error a few months back. --Commander (Ping Me) 10:00, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
The rural-urban breakup is expected to be released soon. But still all those are provisional and we may have to wait for two-three years to get the complete data. --Commander (Ping Me) 10:04, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, looks like the data is out. Can't access though. --Commander (Ping Me) 13:43, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Ya, I do remember that User:Vensatry was also said the same, and thats why after that I did not make changes there and was expecting someone to correct that. But anyways it was just little late to overcome this.----Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 21:03, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Gemini

Sodabottle. I want to clarify with you of adding a proper image for actor Gemini Ganesan (ie., non-free), but with clear source and correct license. Free image is impossible now to get, as you are also aware of. Like to get your insights, so that I can produce one. ----Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 19:47, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

As gemini is not alive now, fair use rationale can be used. go ahead and add a low resolution image with a fair use rationale. --Sodabottle (talk) 04:30, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Request.

Hi Sodabottle. I seek help from you in regard to get permission. I see that [1] you got a special permission of this image upload from the source. It would be really great if you can get a special permission of this image in the same source [2]. I wish you make little efforts in possibility of this suggestion. or else, now itself shall I proceed in uploading the image citing clear source and author details. Plz respond positive. thanks. ----Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 04:00, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Keyan, you can do this yourself. Mohan V Raman is a very friendly person. Just mail to him asking for permission using the guidelines provided in WP:PERMISSION and specify the image you want him to donate (some of the images in his picasa albums are off the table, as he has decided to give the rights to some other magazines, but he will tell you if it cant be donated). So send a mail a) with polite request b) with the donation template filled out, so that he doesnt have to do the work c) ask him to send the mail to the otrs permission mail ID directly. d)after you get permission, upload the image and mention in the description, a mail has been sent to OTRS. Read WP:PERMISSION carefully and proceed.
or else, now itself shall I proceed in uploading the image citing clear source and author details - DO NOT do this. The permission i obtained were only were two specific images. All others are marked as "all rights reserved". At that time, he mentioned, he was going to give the rights of some of the images to other magazines and wont be able to donate them. So ask for permission again with which image you specifically want.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:24, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Sodabottle I get you. I wont do the mistake of uploading images without permission. But I felt since you already dealt with him, it makes more sense and also it will move with much faster dialogues. But I will plead you to just try once to reach him on this. . I not saying no to mail by myself, but you calling on him for this is more brighter and sensible. He might check my status or my previous edits or see the once done big mistakes of my earlier works. So I beleive me approching him might take time to respond or might create bad impression. By the way thanks for your notification ----Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 05:56, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
keyan, I still suggest you try it first. :-) Everybody makes mistakes and you have come a long way from your past mistakes. Like i said, he is a genuinely nice and warm person and most likely grant permission. And by doing this, you will be gaining good experience. So you try and if you run into problem. I am not refusing you, but as policy i always encourage other editors to do stuff by themselves, so that more of us gain experience by doing. So i urge you to try, if you run into problems, i will be there to help.--Sodabottle (talk) 06:00, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

The meaning of fair use

Fair use images may be used in encyclopedic contexts, exactly like the list of Indian prime ministers. If we can't use fair use images, the images should be erased from the biography articles too, because then that is an equally great copyright violation. Wikipedia should not use images or other works which are not free of use for all purposes on Wikipedia. That's why we refer to gnu free licenses. I hope you understand what I'm saying. I might sound harsh, but you are being rude. Not Really Great (talk) 13:36, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

no problem. If only these guys spent their time improving india articles instead of deciding to "defend the country's honor" against slights real and imagined we would have better coverage of india in wikipedia.--Sodabottle (talk) 16:53, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Taluks of Tamil Nadu

Maybe you can help to complete the listing of the taluks of Tamil Nadu. I am working to get data for all sub-districts of India (New page). Bogdan Nagachop (talk) 11:54, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

will do. But be wary of official district sites - some of them havent been updated in the past couple of years and there have been a few changes which are not reflected in them.--Sodabottle (talk) 12:34, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Oh yes, already in the 5 districts I looked up I found that the TN Govt site missed 1 or 2 taluks. And now with your words one may think that even the districts site are not updated. Today I found 10x in TN Kurichi, India. But overall in the last days I have not seen that many ambiguous names in TN as in other states. Maybe I just did not yet search for the right names. Bogdan Nagachop (talk) 21:53, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
The reason for less ambiguity is TN village/taluk names use a initial to disambiguate (most of the time). For instance a common name like "puthur" (lit. new town) will have initials affixed like "T. puthur", or "K. puthur" in most of the cases to make disambig easier (i think this was done during the british raj to make disambig easier)--Sodabottle (talk) 05:00, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

I now found http://tnmaps.tn.nic.in/taluk.php?dcode=01 only alter the number and one gets a list. Much easier than to search in the individual sites. But I liked the music at http://www.thanjavur.tn.nic.in/ :-) Bogdan Nagachop (talk) 22:14, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I think it will be better to have an article titled "Administrative divisions of Tamil Nadu" than Districts of Tamil Nadu or Taluks of Tamil Nadu. The list "Districts of Tamil Nadu" appears rather like a list of taluks of Tamil Nadu. It would be better if you add some district stats like area, population and literacy to that table. Perhaps, you can also add a map of the district. And then, the list "Taluks of Tamil Nadu" list only the number of villages in each taluk. Under each taluk, there are a lot of revenue blocks. The villages form the lowest level of the administration. The information can be formatted better.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 05:54, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Template Tamizhaga Islamiya Aatchiyalarkal

This is not related to the English Wikipedia. But, I just want to bring your attention to this template. Are such vague templates permissible? I've never heard of these "Pandyan sultans" before. And most of these Madurai Sultants barely had any authority outside the Madurai region. And then, how about about creating a template titled "Tamizhakatthin Christuva Aatchiyalarkal" and putting in a list of British governors of Madras?-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 06:28, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Its a bit comprehensive lumping all muslim rulers together. I see your point about lumping all christian rulers together. I will what i can do about splitting it into smaller templates, based on dynasties. "pandyan sultan" is not a widely used term in english works but they do use them in tamil works. Most of the scholarship on this is relatively new. There were two of them - the first one who brought islam to tamil nadu and defeated a minor pandyan prince - but took the title "sultan". The second one is a minister/feudatory of kulasekara pandiyan. Both have used the title "sultan". But there is considerable difference in the papers i read how to classify them. Some of them treat them as full rulers/kings and some dispute it.--Sodabottle (talk) 06:43, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Editing DOB of our client Gul Panag

Hi There,

We manage the account for Gul Panag. We have developed her website http://www.gulpanag.net. Based on her request we have edited her DOB on WIKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gul_Panag to show accurate one which is 1979. But it keeps reverting back to 1977 since the User: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Managerarc keeps changing it. Our client is unhappy with these changes from that user. We have currently updated the same to 1979. How Do i block that user from updating her profile or lock that field so that they cannot update it.

Dominion of India/Pakistan

Hey, in a discussion on whether the article about pre-Republic India should be titled "Dominion of India" or "India (dominion)" you had a number of secondary and official sources for India. The same user who proposed that discussion unilaterally moved the equivalent Dominion of Pakistan article to Pakistan (dominion) and then changed all the text from "Dominion of Pakistan" to "Former Pakistan". Now I'm against this for a couple of reasons, "Dominion of Pakistan" being a very widely used term currently, and I'm not sure that the argument that the country was simply called Pakistan holds much water, it seems obvious they would use this as it is a short name much of the time, as they do today. As a minor point, I'm against parenthetic dismabiguation whenever possible, as it's less natural. Anyway, I was wondering if you had similar official sources for Pakistan at the time being referred to as a Dominion? Searching google brings forward obvious secondary sources, but not official ones. Thanks, Chipmunkdavis (talk) 10:22, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Bro, this is jenakarthik from tamil wiki, hope u remember me. I am facing a problem on the article Sudalai Madan which i wrote some years before. Now for the past few days there r lot of people editing or adding their thoughts in poor english, deleting the pictures and they r keeping on vandalising the article. so kindly need ur help that plz make the page as semi protected, so that those who needs to edit can get permission. plz help me bro. plzzz--Jenakarthik (talk) 14:26, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I am not an admin here (so cant semi protect myself). But I have watchlisted the article and will keep an eye on it for vandalism/disruptive edits. For requesting page protection in en wiki, there need to be continued disruption in the near past (like a few days back). Right now the disruptive edits are weeks old, so we cant use them to justify a request for protection. Don't worry, i will keep an eye and if they re occur in the future, i will request and obtain semi protection. --Sodabottle (talk) 14:31, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

The hogenkkal falls lies between karnataka and tamil nadu border so the english page should be in both kannada and tamil script.

Please read the talk page archives in the article. Online Ambassadors: Time to join pods

Hello! If you're planning to be an active Online Ambassador for the upcoming academic term, now is the time to join one or more pods. (A pod consists of the instructor, the Campus Ambassadors, and the Online Ambassadors for single class.) The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) explains the expectations for being part of a pod as an Online Ambassador. (The MOU for pods in Canada is essentially the same.) In short, the role of Online Ambassadors this term consists of:

  • Working closely with the instructor and Campus Ambassadors, providing advice and perspective as an experienced Wikipedian
  • Helping students who ask for it (or helping them to find the help they need)
  • Watching out for the class as a whole
  • Helping students to get community feedback on their work

This replaces the 1-on-1 mentoring role for Online Ambassadors that we had in previous terms; rather than being responsible for individual students (some of whom don't want or help or are unresponsive), Online Ambassadors will be there to help whichever students in their class(es) ask for help.

You can browse the upcoming courses here: United States; Canada. More are being added as new pods become active and create their course pages.

Once you've found a class that you want to work with—especially if you some interest or expertise in the topic area—you should sign the MOU listing for that class and get in touch with the instructor. We're hoping to have at least two Online Ambassadors per pod, and more for the larger classes.

If you're up for supporting any kind of class and would like me to assign you to a pod in need of more Online Ambassadors, just let me know.

--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 16:36, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

PS: There are still a lot of student articles from the last term that haven't been rated. Please rate a few and update the list!

Rav Ashi

Interesting image from the Diaspora Museum. Do you recall who and when the relief was created? Chesdovi (talk) 11:40, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately No. I kind of rushed through the museum clicking everything at sight in the space of three hours. (Had to return to Ben Gurion airport to catch the flight home :-). I have two hundred more images to crop, cleanup and upload!.). I photographed the display panel below the relief, but it has come out blurred. Only the title in bigger font (which says "Rabbi Ashi teaches at the Sura Academy") is clear. The portion in tiny text which explains where the relief came from is blurred and i cant make out anything now. The only things i remember about this exhibit are that it was in the "jewish law" section and was part of the "academies" panel. I can email you the original image, if you like.--Sodabottle (talk) 11:54, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

I just create pages on edit section, so i donno what kind of programming lang is that, what is source code??, plz help me in answering these questions, as soon as possible plz.--Jenakarthik (talk) 02:47, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Oh ok. you are creating them manually. It actually solves a lot of problems. Reply saying that
1. No programming language - you are creating the articles manually . Here they might decide that you dont need a bot flag, but rather community approval, which can be obtained through the India noticeboard page. I am not sure what is going to happen because, you are doing something manually at a speed normally reserved for bots. But this will simplify things very much
2.No source code - just manual copy paste.
3.Give the sources. Use the official 2001 census sources.
4. Village name, demographics, literarcy rate etc, just provide a list
5. Yes always. As you are doing this manually but speedily, the articles are always subject to human review by yourself.
And finally, things might go a little slow and procedure bound in en wiki. Don't get frustrated, just take them in your stride and dont create another article for a week or so till this is resolved completely. :-). And users Ganeshk and Blofeld are very very experienced in this kind of place article creation. (Ganesh has created thousands of articles in ta wiki too using his bot and he helps us in wiktionary too for mass creation of words). Their advice will be valuable for your attempt.--Sodabottle (talk) 04:27, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the The Anti-Vandalism Barnstar. Karthik Nadar (talk) 14:43, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

I noticed that you've reverted 3 of Filmreporter1's edits as self promotion. I'm currently taking one of his pages to AFD, but was unaware that the user had a conflict of interest with the page. Is there evidence that the user is in violation of WP:COI, and if so, have you / were you planning on taking him to WP:COI/N? Inks.LWC (talk) 08:54, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

No hard evidence. Just behavioural evidence. I noticed him because of his edits to Tamil wikipedia adding the name of the film "karuvap payalae" to articles there. It is standard practice for the film/crew's PR people to do this when the film is about to be released (or the film rights are about to be sold to TV channels) to do SEO stuff in Ta wiki. I reverted him there and saw he was doing the same thing here and so reverted him here too. In my experience, Tamil film PR people dont edit once their edits are removed. I plan to keep a watch from her and in Ta wiki for future promotional edits and will report him to the relevant forum if he continues.--Sodabottle (talk) 09:01, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Jenakarthik Bot

Bro, i got the following statement as a reply for my BOT req, so what shall i do now?
Denied. This is not a bot, it's not even an assisted editing task, so I don't see how the BAG could approve it or not. This consists of normal page creation, at a relatively low rate (~1 per minute, for 10-15 minutes, a few times per day) not anywhere near what bots and semi-automated editing can achieve, and lies outside of what BAG can approve or disapprove. However, since these seems to be problematic articles for one reason or another, I would suggest you go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Tamil Nadu, and closely follow the feedback and guidance given there.--Jenakarthik (talk) 10:16, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Aha!. Got caught in the bureaucracy. Normal editors think you are too fast for manual editing and bot group thinks you are too slow for automated editing :-). The next step would be to discuss with Ganeshk and clearly outline what you plan to create and the sources for it. Ganesh has experience with creation of Tamil Nadu place articles and can help you. Inform Ganesh of what you plan to do like - you intend to create X amount of articles, sourced from Y at the rate of n per hour or something precise. Create a few and ask him if they are fine. Wikiproject TN is not much active (less than 10 active editors currently), so Ganesh's talk page would be the best place to ask for review. I will join the discussion there once you post --Sodabottle (talk) 10:22, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks anna, i did on his talk, Plz check.--Jenakarthik (talk) 03:55, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)I also thought it was a bot, my biggest concern was the sourcing (use CensusIndia instead of mirrors or derivatives) and the possibility of duplication -- sometimes even CensusIndia uses two different transliterations, so you'll need to make sure you're not creating duplicate articles. Also, check with User:Ravichandar84 as he has done something similar in the past -- creating all village articles by block etc. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 10:26, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Adding pictures of Hogenakkal waterfalls and Cauvery river

Hi,

I am new to contributing to Wikipedia. I recently visited Hogenakkal waterfalls and took several pictures there. I've uploaded it to wikimedia commons with the creative common license. I would like see some of those pictures added to the Hogenakkal waterfalls article on wikipedia. The pictures can be found here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/ThePiston

The article is protected (and even if it isn't protected, I don't know how to add). Can you please help me with this?

Thanks, ThePiston. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThePiston (talkcontribs) 10:44, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your contributions Piston, You can add an image by using the following syntax in an article/page

[[File:Water above the Hogenakkal falls.jpg|right|thumb|250px|Kavery]]

Kavery

This will produce the image on the right. For changing position change "right" to "left". For changing size just change 250px to some other pixel size.

In case of articles where images are more numerous, a gallery section is usually added. Hogenakkal Falls is one such article. You can add your images by adding the following line at the bottom of the images already listed: |File:Water above the Hogenakkal falls.jpg|Hogenakkal Nature

The article is currently locked to autoconfirmed users due to past disruptive editing. You will become autoconfirmed four days after registration and making a minimum of 10 edits to other articles. You will be able to edit the article then.

In case of heavily photographed places like cavery and hogenakkal make sure you are adding pictures which show something that is not already in the pictures displayed. (We dont want the article to become a picture gallery :-))--Sodabottle (talk) 10:55, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Lagori

Hi Sodabottle, I'm sorry i was under the assumption that we can add info on the same page together. Sorry for any incontinence caused. Can you please tell me how do i start a band page i'm new to this. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lagori (talkcontribs) 11:07, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello lagori,
For guidelines on creating a new article, read this page: Wikipedia:Your first article. This page is pretty much exhaustive and is covers everything you need to know about creating the article.
Ideally the title of the article should be "Lagori (band)". You can create the article by clicking on the red colour link that shows in the previous line. But the most important things to remember are
  1. Not all bands are allowed to have articles in Wikipedia. The minimum notability criteria a band should meet to have an article in wikipedi is listed at WP:NBAND. Go through it and determine if your band meets them. If it doesn't meet the criteria, someone might delete your article
  2. From your username, i assume you are one of the band members or associated with the band. That means you have a conflict of interest (too close to the subject). Read the conflict of interest guidelines to avoid the "don'ts" in such situations.
As you might be thinking by now, wikipedia rules are a bit complex and confusing. Be patient and you will figure them out quickly. Let me know if you run into problems.--Sodabottle (talk) 11:17, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Shall we start working on this page..?? The page looks unorganized and vague with broken links. :-( --BabuOnWiki (talk) 18:56, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Translation assistance

I'm trying to determine whether "Gotra". Archived from the original on 2010-01-18. supports the statement:

"However currently about 169 clans are counted, some of them because of spelling differences."

The source is in one of the Indic languages. I am not even sure that it is reliable. Can you help? Even if only to identify the language? - Sitush (talk) 09:12, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

The script is Devnagari and i am sure the language is Hindi. I can read it, but my hindi is rudimentary. The table lists "गोत्र" (gotra) in one column and something called "आंकने" (aankaney) in the second column. The title reads "gotras and aankaneys of Gahoi merchant community". aankaney is either judgment or decision (am not sure). I believe spacemanspiff is fluent in Hindi, he can help with this.

--Sodabottle (talk) 09:28, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Great, thanks. I'll point Spiffy to this thread rather than start another. Hope you do not mind. - Sitush (talk) 09:36, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, these kind of topics are better suited to Utcursch who has worked in the editing space. It's basically an evaluation of the gotras and what's under them, I count 130 with one Gotra being unevaluated. —SpacemanSpiff 12:42, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Like Sodabottle says, the page lists 12 gotras of the Gahoi community in one column and corresponding "आंकने" (aankaney) in another. The word "aankaney" means estimates in Hindi, but in this case I think it refers to sub-divisions of gotras (clans). I'm not sure about the exact meaning -- Hindi dictionaries do not list any other meaning of the word, and googling for "आंकने" (aankaney) or "आंकना" (aankana, singular of aanakaney) in the context of gotra throws up pages related to the Gahoi community. I'm a native Hindi speaker, and I've never come across this word in any other context than "estimation" or "assessment". So, I'm assuming it's a word used specifically among the Gahois to refer to sub-divisions of gotras.
The page lists 12 gotras, and 130 aankaneys (presumably clans). Nothing on the page says that there are 169 clans. Neither is there a statement which says anything about the spelling differences. utcursch | talk 14:30, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
OK. Thanks very much to all of you for your help regarding this. Looks like I am going to have to take a decision, so I'll have a think. The "some of them because of spelling differences" is WP:OR but could explain the discrepancy between 169 & 130. I am concerned that there is a word that appears only to have a contextually useful interpretation among what is really a very small group (and from that it might be deduced that the source is produced within that group, which is also not great news). It is quite a big jump from "estimation"/"assessment" to "subdivision"/"clan". I'll weigh up whether the info is really worth including in the first instance. Thanks again. - Sitush (talk) 14:55, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
The words listed in the second column are used as family names in India. So, it's fair to assume that they are clan names. utcursch | talk 17:30, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

आंकना can also mean to mark something to distinguish it from other similar elements (a laundry mark, for example, is an aankna). Though it does not explicitly (to my knowledge) mean subdivisions, perhaps this 'distinguishing mark' is the root of the way in which it is used in the linked article. I know nothing about gothra's, caste or the like so can't help you with interpretation but I do notice that the terms are (generally) neither recognizable words nor seem to be last names. I'd expect the latter if they were caste subdivisions and the former if they were professions. --rgpk (comment) 15:56, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

editing viluppuram template

dear bro, i was trying to expand the district template of viluppuram Template:Villupuram_District, but it keeps on taking me to a redirect page. could u plz check what is the problem?reg..--Jenakarthik (talk) 04:55, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

A small issue in the template feature, the template was created in one spelling and then redirected to another but the link in the "e" portion points to the original spelling so this happens. Just go to the target title - Template:Viluppuram district and edit the page.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:00, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Anna Univ alumni worry a lot about the Government's strand on this university's acts and legislation which is changing every 5 years. But to a a sad not, at wiki, I don't think so we have proper articles. All are similar to G.O's. A layman will get confused if he visits these pages. Moreover no unification order was passed by the govt. yet and all the AUTs are functioning. Pl have a glance and suggest ideas. Hi, I don't know how to categorize the non-film awards in this page. So can you help me out.--Commander (Ping Me) 18:55, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

IMO, put them all under the "Other honors" category. As of now, the page looks like having too many tables and is a bit difficult to parse (more than 5/6 tables in a page usually does this). So combining the non-film ones into one single table would be good. the cnn ibn, abraham kovur, padmashri, ficci etc should go into the "other honors" section--Sodabottle (talk) 04:39, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Revert at Madurai

I have just done a massive revert at Madurai because the major recent contributor introduced far more issues than could reasonably be resolved without a line-by-line copyedit. Even simple things like removing the space between the end of one sentence and the start of another, which idiosyncracy pretty much ran right through the article.

I will, however, go through the diff and pick out any useful sources etc (there were some, among the dross). Not now, but over the weekend. - Sitush (talk) 17:49, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

An error found in Tirupperunturai page

I found the following line in Tirupperunturai article factually incorrect. The article says, "The temple is supposed to have been built by Manickavasagar, one of the 63 saivite saints." Actually it is well known that Manickavasagar (One of Nalvar) was not one of 63 Nayanmars (which is what meant in the article). There is proof for that in Nayanar article in Wikipedia itself. How to correct it. Should it be deleted, or the error be highlighted.

i have removed the wrong data. You can do it easily too. just click on the "edit" button in the article, remove the wrong data and in the edit summary (small box below the main edit box), give the reason why you are changing/removing text. Since this is an obvious non-controversial factual change, i have done it myself.--Sodabottle (talk) 09:48, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
