Speedy deletion nomination of File:KGHY logo.png

A tag has been placed on File:KGHY logo.png, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. I am a frequent reader/browser/learner on Wikipedia, but am having trouble getting my head around the editing guidelines and the technical requirements for being an active contributor.

I am not interested in article creation. I don't wish to waste my time fighting back & forth over "the real facts" with other users. I just want to do something to make the site better.

What opportunities are available to me? How do I become involved?

I reordered and restructured this a bit, hope you don't mind. In addition to what John suggested above and below, you can also help out by doing some ground-level content work. For example, you could read Wikipedia:Citing sources and then check some articles in Category:Unreferenced BLPs and add sources when you find them on Google News or somewhere else. Since those are unsourced, there is no real chance of having to "fight back & forth" with other users and you can simply leave the article again after you added the source. Even if you add it incorrectly or inconsistently with the manual of style, it is still a huge benefit to the project. The only hard thing is to be able to simply ignore an article after you edited it once ;-) I'll leave the helpme for others to find. Regards So Why 15:20, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Well, I believe the easiest way to get involved would be to just start editing. Pick a topic you know something about, have a source for, or feel is poorly covered on Wikipedia, and add to it. The easiest way to get involved is to start to contribute in small ways and I believe if you do this more opportunities will become available/apparent to you. You may also want to look at this, it may give you some ideas. Again I suggest you find something you think needs fixin' and have at it (As Larry Sanger once said "Be Bold"). Typo correction

Here is one more specific suggestion, which is the way I started (centuries ago, it seems) to get regularly involved: typo correction. See WP:TYPO. The list at WP:LCM gives links to common mis-spellings, and the search facility lets you find articles that use them. That shows you a wide variety of articles, helps make Wikipedia look more professional, and is not so trivial a task as it seems: for instance, beware of British/US variant spellings, which should not be arbitrarily changed (both are used, and the principle is to be consistent within an article), and also beware of correcting spellings within a direct quotation. My own first edit was removing an apostrophe that didn't belong there. Then I made a few replacements of words with what seemed to me to be plainer English (e.g. replacing "solution" with "product"). As time went by i found more and more little details that I could correct, such as an article which referred to a particular fictional character as being from a TV show, whereas the character originally came from books, later televised. I don't think that originally I expected ever to any more than these minor corrections, but as time went by I gradually found more and more that I felt like being involved in. I am not suggesting that you have to follow the same path, but there is a lot to be said for starting in a very small way, so that you can learn gently, without finding yourself getting into conflicts, and having your work reverted. I find that editors who start in small ways are much more likely to finish up making useful contributions than those who try to jump in right from the start to do big things. Anyway, whatever you choose to do, welcome, and I hope you succeed in finding some role for yourself in contributing to this great project. JamesBWatson (talk) 16:03, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Assessment assistance

Just as a general disclaimer, I'm involved with the History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia project. :) One of our goals is to improve the quality of Australian Paralympian related articles. We're actively working on improving these and trying to get contributors to help. :) A complete list of articles is found at Book talk:Australian Paralympians. It would be really awesome if you could look at these articles, determine if the assessment is correct, or of the article should be higher or lower. (I've self-assessed some of these articles and need a check.) Some articles are listed as stubs that I think technically could be starts, but I'm not certain and don't want to do that on my own on a large scale. If you have the time, it would be fantastic if you could offer one or two lines of feedback about what it would take to get the article to the next assessment level. (Needs more content. The template's documentation mentions the "0007 issue" multiple times, but fails to state what the exact, proper use ought to be; the confusion continues on talk page. Tilt

Glad you asked! It doesn't need any copy editing, but does need attention to the way the columns/table/templates are spaced on the page. I used {{Spacing}} because of the way that infoboxes and {{Track listing}} were causing a layout/page formatting problem. After reading the relevant template documentation and help pages, I tried making some changes without any success. Therefore, I wanted to bring it to someone's attention for assistance. Perhaps I chose the wrong template, as this one auto-categorizes into Category:All articles needing copy edit. Any help or feedback you can provide is most welcome. It's correct that I missed licenceing info. from the copy of figure 10 out of 1553b, which I redrew (1553b isn't copyrighted anyway), but the flag's got put on fig. 9. sorry about that. It was actually my first wikipedia edit and I didn't really know how to do it. In fact, that page is very incomplete and as I am writing my undergraduate thesis on Tancred of Hauteville, I thought I would have a look at it. The documentation has recently changed to allow {{Talk header}} to be placed on even quiet talkpages, so there is no longer a need to remove it. The thinking is that the template provides advice and encouragement to new and inexperienced users, which is in line with the Foundation's aim to get more feedback from all users.
