Hi, AfC --

Thanks for having a look. Re your comment on notability -- there's an entry on Matt Rizai in the on World Book that reads as follows: Business Week magazine, in its January 12, 1998 issue, recognized Matthew Rizai, the company CEO, as one of the best entrepreneurs of 1997, and Forbes ASAP magazine, in its February 23, 1998 issue, recognized the company as one of the 100 most dynamic technology companies in the US—with a rank of number eight.Italic text

This text was removed by a previous reviewer. The articles from Forbes and Business Week are not available online. I'm trying to find a way to link to them directly.

I have PDFs of feature articles from major magazines that I want to use as references for Wiki entries I'm working on. The PDFs are scans of the actual pages. I found them (Businessweek, Forbes, Forbes ASAP) through my library (NYPL), which requires a UN/PW, so I can't link readers directly to them. I downloaded them and could find way to archive them (archive.org, e.g.).

What's the common practice?

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Eugenio Gentili Tedeschi. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! @Meatsgains: Hi, Meatsgains -- thanks for the (super) speedy feedback. My thought was that the Michaels Companies corporation had grown to the point that it was bigger than and different from just the Michaels stores. So I moved the corporate stuff from the Store entry into the new page and added more info and sources. But there's overlap to be sure. Maybe a multi-section single entry is the way to go. But in that case, the "Michaels" entry should be renamed "The Michaels Companies," as the overall umbrella under which we put the everything else. What do you think? I'll think about it a bit more, too, while waiting to hear from you. Thanks, again. Sam Perkins (talk) 14:34, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the speedy deletion tag has been removed and replaced with a suggested merge with Michaels, which I would support. Feel free to discuss on the article's talk page. Meatsgains(talk) 19:32, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of The Michaels Companies

[edit]

Hello Sam Perkins,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Meatsgains and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I have tagged an article that you started, The Michaels Companies for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, Michaels.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Meatsgains}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Speedy deletion nomination of Forter

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Forter requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Hi I have come across one of your page creations Noah Glass (Olo) the way that it is written looks like it may well have been created by a WP:COI editor especially as it was created by a WP:SPA and was already deleted as being promotional. You have also created and edited other pages that are linked to this person and their company Olo (online ordering) such as

You have also recreated a page for Forter that was previously deleted and have stated that it is very similar to the previous article. All of the above points suggest that you may be editing for clients. If this is case and you have not made a declaration you are in contradiction with WP:PAID policy and you should rectify the situation immediately to avoid a block.

Concerning previous accounts your first edits show a level of skill which suggests that you were already a very experienced editor when you created your account. Alternative accounts are normally forbidden as per WP:SOCK. If you have edited with another account or use an alternative account this should be declared as per WP:DOPP and request that the accounts be blocked if they are not for legitimate usage as per WP:SOCKLEGIT. Dom from Paris (talk) 14:08, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Domdeparis --
I replied on your Talk page and realize this may be the preferred way to answer you. As you note, I'm an experienced editor and writer (I worked in magazines as an editor and writer; in Paris and the US), who contributes off-and-on to Wikipedia. I use just one account, "Sam Perkins". In addition to the entries you mentioned in the food delivery category, I've added to Travis Kalanick, Deliveroo and one or two others in that space. I've also started separate Wiki entries, such as Propaganda kimonos and Eugenio Gentili Tedeschi using my Sam Perkins account. Sam Perkins (talk) 16:01, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry but you haven't actually replied to my questions. The skills needed to contribute to wikipedia are not those of a writer or editor I'm talking about the use of the tools here.
You say you only use one account but have you ever used another account before?
You have not replied to the question about editing for clients. Have you ever been asked to edit wikipedia by someone else?
Could you explain how you know that your version of Forter is very similar to the original version. Once a page is deleted there are no versions available on wikipedia for editors to see unless they are admin.
I apologise about the interrogatory nature of this comment but I need to know if I should make a report on the COI noticeboard or not. Cheers. Dom from Paris (talk) 06:32, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Domdeparis --

No need to apologize about your tone. It's super professional, for which, thank you.

I do no paid work: I contribute to Wikipedia because I enjoy it.

RE: Noah Glass and the interest in food ordering and delivery -- I was adding to the entries for Ghost kitchens, food delivery and take-out, and Glass and his company kept coming up. One of the Wiki entries (Take out, I think) has a banner asking contributors to add more non-US material. I have a digital subscription to the Financial Times which covers European and Asian business well, so I added non-US info to Take-out and Food delivery, as well as to the entries for the UK-based Deliveroo and a German-based company. I dug around and found that Glass had been named the 2006 Tech Innovator of the year by Businessweek -- the year after BW had named Mark Zuckerberg. It snowballed from there.

Other accounts: I began contributing to Wikipedia in 2015. I started out using a blind handle, but dropped it after a month or so. I didn't create any entries using it, and I don't remember which entries I edited, but not more than three or four. In the end, I was more comfortable using my current account -- the one that has my real name -- and no other. I don't use any other account and haven't for four years.

Forter: I made my comment about the two Forter entries being similar for two reasons. When I started on the Forter entry (around 8 months ago), I followed the delete notice and found the deleted entry--it was findable then. I did not create it. I didn't use any of the material, copy it or save it for reference. When I went to look for it later, it had been completely deleted. Second: because my entry was bare bones, by necessity it covered the same basic facts any short entry would--date of founding, location, investors, founders, business model. An editor comparing the two would understandably see overlap and similarities. I wrote original copy based on the sources I found myself. I had nothing to do with the deleted version.

Thanks for your input. Sam Perkins (talk) 17:30, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent "Timberland" edit

[edit]

You did a nice job with your edit to Timberland, a pretty iconic brand with a stub of an article that never took off because of bullet prose and copy violations. But your edit was respectful of what was there, extremely well-sourced, and comprehensive but concise. Kudos. 70.163.208.142 (talk) 13:16, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wow -- just catching up with this. Thanks! Sam Perkins (talk) 15:41, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
