Sorry I do not manage that article,if you are looking for the creator, click here.Maglame (talk) 10:52, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments at the PR. I would appreciate it, however, if you refrained from copy-editing; perhaps you could comment instead? There are several mistakes in this edit alone, which is somewhat unhelpful seeing as how I have to now copy-edit your copy-edits. ;) Thanks. María (habla conmigo) 14:45, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, Sadads (talk) 14:59, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sadads, thanks for the cupcake (my second in one day). I feel the need to point out, however, that the comment I made on Truthkeeper's talk page was in no way aimed at you, and in fact did not even mention you. That you think that comment had anything to do with you saddens me. No, I do not feel that your suggestions at the PR are entirely helpful as far as what I intend for the article, but my comment re: the Novels WikiProject dealt entirely with what I saw on the talk page after I had posted my request for reviews. It's not the same project with the same focus that I remember, which is why I ended up removing my post. Again, this had nothing to do with you or your curriculum vitae. Since we are now discussing it, however, I'm sure you do a very good job in most of your Wiki endeavors. Please do be careful in reviewing potential FACs, however; despite the obvious need for reviewers at GAC/PR/FAC, I know that I personally would rather have one very good, knowledgeable reviewer than several who may not be as good and/or knowledgeable. That is where my frustration stemmed from, and now I know where yours did as well. Thanks, María (habla conmigo) 22:35, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh - my page seems to be causing too much drama these days so I'll bring this here. First, re the grammar, I'll address that on the talk page. If it would help I'm more than happy to send Sage and Awadewit email giving them permission to divulge to you their impression of whether I am qualified a; to make judgement regarding literature; and b; to have a sense of what or what not academics here need or want. Would that be helpful at all? The Red Badge of Courage is of high importance in the canon of Am lit and needs to be done right. I was quite careful in the GA review before passing it. There is perhaps room for development regarding themes, but what's there is presented succinctly and is easy to read. Quite honestly I'm tempted to take the monstrosity I've created with The Sun Also Rises and simplify following the example of Red Badge. Anyway, thanks for the pie - I even have a chair on my page, so I can sit and eat pie and fight with the AN/I crowd :) Truthkeeper88 (talk) 00:04, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, no fair! Truthkeeper got a pie and I only got a lousy cupcake? :) Seriously, though (and this goes to both Sadads and Truthkeeper), thank you both for your input on Red Badge. The problem with such important -- and, quite frankly, brilliant -- novels like Red Badge and The Sun Also Rises is trying to strike that perfect balance between readability and encyclopedic value. It's so difficult to get just right, and as a result no two novel-related articles are ever the same. Perhaps that's why a project like WP:NOVELS will never be sustainable in quite the same way as WikiProjects dedicated to battleships, films, or even fungi. A few years ago when I tried to resurrect the project, it was unfortunately a waste of time for me, personally; while my interests even then were leaning toward classic literature, it seemed that many members were only occupied with popular literature. We could never seem to organize ourselves, and it seems that continues today. That, and I admittedly seem to work better by myself. I apologize for my shortness with you; I know you meant well, but my high standards clouded that fact. I'm sorry if this episode may have hastened a wiki-break on your part. I hope it doesn't keep you away from long, since it's obvious you have your fingers in many Wiki-pies, and you obviously enjoy what you do! You can't say that for many disgruntled, single-minded content editors like myself. Take care of yourself, María (habla conmigo) 01:23, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Breaking Wikibreak to say thank you. I just need to stop stalking my watchlist and pounding through backlog stuff right now, so the break has been coming on me for a while now (I have been in a rut for the last several weeks, and am not sure how to get myself back out of it), and really do appreciate the feedback and thoughts. I will be back soon, hopefully with a less clouded mind and we will run from there! 92.14.211.170 (talk) 08:57, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DFBW

[edit]

This is capitalised in all sources relating to it. I did consider non-capitalising it, but decided it was inconsistent with all sources. Can you find a source that doesn't capitalise DFBW? Paul Bedsontalk 14:08, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did a quick google scholar search, and I am seeing it at about half and half see the search here. Though it refers to a specific type of material, the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization) naming conventions favour the use of lower case in subsequent words, Sadads (talk) 15:18, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good call. The references I made the page from must have all been caps, but studying the naming conventions on other pottery too, you're correct to make the move. Cheers. Paul Bedsontalk 15:27, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol rights

[edit]

Hi Sadads, I just wanted to drop a line to say thanks for nominating me for autopatrol rights. I was completely unaware of the nomination until I received the pleasant surprise of a notice on my talk page that I had been granted those rights. While I recognize this new status is to reduce the workload of other users, it is still nice to know that others are aware of my efforts to create good quality articles. OCNative (talk) 00:27, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly, I was struck a while back about some New Page Patroller complaining about the backlog of pages being to long, and I had been requesting watching the Autopatrol rights request page for a while and was struck at how little they were utilizing it, so I have made it my mission to patrol pages and identify as many people as possible to get that right. In addition to reducing the backlog, as you point, it is very nice to get a little extra rights to recognize your service :) I remember when some admin gave me the right last summer, and it struck me as one of the best little tidbits of encouragement I had gotten in a while. Happy editing and keep it up! You certainly are doing a good job, Sadads (talk) 00:44, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're absolutely right; this reduces backlog while simultaneously encouraging contributions. Thanks again! OCNative (talk) 00:49, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

[edit]

Hi Sadads, thanks for the help so far on my journey here. I would like to summit this article 2011 New Patriotic Party Primaries I wrote for DYK. Could you go through and make suggestion as to how to get it to the DYK level. Thanks. I'll be waiting.--CrossTempleJay (talk) 16:01, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have made the corrections, could you check it once more. --CrossTempleJay (talk) 17:56, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
will this do?
Hi Sadads, I'm wondering why no one has yet reviewed my DYK even though later ones have. Could there be a reason for this? Or could you do so for me? Finally I also want to know where I can ask for Autopatrolled rights based on my work so far? Thanks. --CrossTempleJay (talk) 14:10, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty arbitrary really, people just check the ones that they are interested in or they happen to see as not check yet. It's alright though because you still have a few days before you are anywhere close to the top of the line for being in the prep areas. I am pretty sure someone will do it soon, no worries. One way of making sure it is high on the list is reviewing other nominations, so that the people who have done more than 5 DYKs, when they look for their review (which is part of the requirements for experienced users) are forced to look at yours :) But it will be done, eventually I am sure, Sadads (talk) 14:16, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks as always. What about the autopatrolled rights?--CrossTempleJay (talk) 14:20, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest not applying for the autopatrolled rights quite yet, you still have a little ways to go in consistently producing new articles of very high quality, in terms of formatting, style and high quality referencing. For example, Regional hospitals of Ghana does not directly address the topic in the title, Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital uses an not necessarily reliable source, Zabzugu-Tatale (Ghana parliament constituency) has un formatted internet citations and the only source you use for Kojokrom, Ghana is a travel site with no specific url, whereas travel sites are generally still considered unreliable sources on Wikipedia (see WP:RS). In general, I don't think you have completely figured out all of the policies and approaches of the community, even though articles like 2011 New Patriotic Party Primaries and Aboadze are pretty good, though as you may have noticed, I have still come through and done some stylistic cleanup on both. For right now I think that it is good that you work gets a second pair of eyes over it during New Page Patrol, even if the second pair of eyes doesn't always make any changes. As I have said before though, you are really doing a service for Ghana, Africa and the world in developing this content, even though it is not always perfectly in line with our internal policies on Wikipedia, Sadads (talk) 14:38, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the advice. CrossTempleJay (talk) 14:50, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, no problem. The reason I haven't been stalking your edits and pointing out all of the things I would change is because I know that Wikipedia and it's policies have a really steep learning curve, and you are understanding it a lot better then the average user and almost every edit you make is higher quality then the last. Don't get discouraged, and keep it up, you are really an asset to the community, Sadads (talk) 14:59, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You are really a good coach that is why, I seem to be improving so fast. Thanks.CrossTempleJay (talk) 15:03, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled

[edit]

Hi Sadads. On your recommendation, I accorded autopatrolled to Neddyseagoon 14 days ago, but on the condition that he clean up previous articles and does not create any more unsourced ones. He's still mass creating unsourced one-line stubs and I will have to consider removing these rights again. Problem is, he does not seem to read his talk page at all. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:56, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the new articles in his history of the past 150 edits or so, all of them are clearly notable topics with equivilant pages in German Wikipedia or another language. Though they are unreferenced, that is not a requirement for inclusion because of Notability and he is good at adding the appropriate stub tags to the short articles, so that they go in the backlog of articles that could use a little more expansion. Though I realize the probability of someone coming along in the near future and expanding those articles is low, their simple existence does credit to the project: they meet notability, they are referenceable if someone were to take the time (remember German Wikipedia may not have as strong referencing criteria, but their content tends to be much better then the average English articles), they develop the thoroughness of our multilingual coverage of topics, and they fill in gaps of culturally specific topics of interest. I personally would not remove the auto-patrolled, because he is not creating content that will in any way have decidedly negative aftereffects on the community, just add a small bit of work for us later down the road, Sadads (talk) 11:27, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mass creation of unreferenced stubs is not a recommended practice here even if it is allowed on other projects, and in some cases it is disruptive. All articles must be referenced except for some extremely rare exceptions, and although as you say, those stubs will still be there, unexpanded (but harmless), for a long time to come, verifiability not truth is the rule and those stubs can expect to be PRODed sooner or later. Is there a good reason why he can't slow down and take more time and reference them himself? I think his creations should continue to pass through NPP and let the community decide. His many cats will probably be up for CfD soon too.--Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:05, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note to say I removed your speedy deletion tag from this article. In my opinion the question of whether a topic fails WP:NOTNEWS involves judgement calls and should be decided by community consensus at AfD, not by speedy deletion. This is also in line with WP:NOTCSD which lists "reasons based on WP:NOT" as not being sufficient to justify speedy deletion. Thparkth (talk) 01:37, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

speedy deletion

[edit]

please note that only the reasons given at WP:CSD can be used for speedy. (It is perfectly OK to add to the template explaining the reason more specifically, or use the equivalent in a custom wording--though usually not necessary, for it ought to be obvious--if not obvious, it's not a speedy), However, if none of the specified rationales fit exactly, speedy may not be used. If clearly uncontroversial, user WP:PROD; otherwise, AfD. The criteria are interpreted narrowly and literally--see the WT:CSD archives for discussions of specific points. Please read (or re-read) WP:Deletion policy and WP:CSD before placing any more deletion notices. DGG ( talk ) 03:13, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sonnet template

[edit]

Hi Sadads, I wondered if might know about things as sonnet templates. I can't see how to fix the current one used for all of Shakespeare's sonnets, such as Sonnet 116, which has the text centred and the box small enough to screw with the line breaks. Any thoughts? Thanks Span (talk) 21:58, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well there are two options: we could make the text a little bit smaller by default or make the box a little bit wider. I like the idea of a wider box because most people have higher resolution computer screens now, and the mobile version automatically fix it. It would look like the one at User:Sadads/Test_sonnet, and we could even widden it a bit more if that doesn't work for all of them, Sadads (talk) 22:21, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, never mind, I think I found a better solution, Sadads (talk) 22:28, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Great. As long as the box is big enough to accommodate the longest line of any given sonnet. Could you left align? William would spin in his great with centred text. Where is the template, by the way? Thanks very much. Best wishes Span (talk) 22:31, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Everything is nice and pretty! I got rid of the mandated width, and aligned text to the left. I fixed it in the main template Template:Sonnet and I ran the sample one for me to mess with in User:Sadads/Sonnet, Sadads (talk) 22:35, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lovely. Thanks. And thanks for all the work you do for literature, as an ambassador and all the other areas of focus with Wikipedia. Best wishes Span (talk) 09:58, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe, thats great, I am glad to see that you are excited, keep it up! Sadads (talk) 21:45, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help. I could not have come this far without your help. Do you still think I should wait before applying for autopatroller and other rights, as you can see my last three article have been awesome compared to the others (thanks to your advice)? CrossTempleJay  talk 22:01, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Generally yes, wait. The rule of thumb for autopatrolled is usually 50 new articles, and most of the last 15-20 are of high standard. It's not that big of a deal actually, it only keeps the workload down for New Page Patrollers, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. As you may have noticed, our sense of experience and time scale on Wikipedia is kindof slow, it takes a while to work your way through processes. I see that you nominated one of the articles for GA review and that you have been interacting with other people, which is great! Keep it up, assimilate the principles of the community. I would also start reading WP:Signpost if you haven't already. It is a really great community newspaper that gets published at the beginning of each week. It provides a nice sense of the issues that the community is dealing with right now, and what Featured content is being produced, Sadads (talk) 22:14, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As always, I respect your view and would wait. Thanks once again. CrossTempleJay  talk 22:20, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Thanks for your concern , i have seen many redlinks in Wikipedia. Proper and effective redlinks and appropriate places help creation of articles. The redlinks are for good and not too much in number. Kindly co-operate. Mahesh Kumar Yadav  talk 15:02, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes redlinks are good, but according to Wikipedia:Red link, except when articles clearly need to be written and are clearly WP:Notable, links should not be inserted until after an article is written. Navboxes, unless they contain a list of things that are 100% WP:Notable, should not have read links, because it clutters the navbox, Sadads (talk) 15:08, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled

[edit]

Hi Sadads. I appreciate your enthusiasm at wanting to reduce the load at NPP by requesting AP rights. However, while other admins might exercise their own criteria, I will generally not accord 'autopatrolled' to accounts whose creations are mainly stubs, still have flagged issues (however old they are), or are much below the recommended 50 creations excluding redirects. It would be great if you could consider doing these checks yourself before making nominations to save others doing it because it takes sometimes over 10 minutes for a conscientious admin do a full, representative check of the editors' works, and talk pages/archives. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:08, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I usually check fully their articles and talk page, looking for major issues. The difficulty arises in how much monitoring we should be doing on NewPages and what is the actual value of the userright. Though I agree that if they haven't created over 50 articles or if they are mostly stubs, that the backlog reduction is insignificant, however, giving people an extra user right is like a stamp of confidence on their participation in the community. So even if they don't meet all the recommended requirements, as long as the content need not be monitored because they show a high standard of creation the importance of increasing moral amongst regular contributers is probably more valuable then holding on to a user right that doesn't do anything, Sadads (talk) 09:24, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

query from Maheshkumaryadav

[edit]

hi, Can i use {{PAGENAME}} tag in creating pages for villages in Haryna state, i want to create article for 100 villages, all having same content, as i will be using {{PAGENAME}} to use the name of the village. Like i have used in Kanouli. Will that be in rules ? Mahesh Kumar Yadav (talk) 10:58, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If I may butt in. Try contacting Ganeshk. He designed User:Ganeshk/CSVLoader, that can make the stubs in 5 minutes. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:20, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that sounds brilliant, thanks Anna. You want to make sure that you are filling out all of the standard information on the stubs. For your information, if you are going to use Template:PAGENAME in articles you should substitute the results of {{PAGENAME}} by inserting {{Subst:PAGENAME}}, Sadads (talk) 11:30, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You got it.

[edit]

Thanks for the kind message. It's clear he wants to contribute in a meaningful manner, but he seems more interested in quantity vs. quality. I left some examples I'd done about some California ghost towns and how they started out with basic info that all stubs should have. Every one of those articles I cited have been expanded, but I did the initial research to create something useable from the get-go. I'll leave him alone regarding the village articles; perhaps he really will expand them. I hate like hell using the "nuke" option and blowing them off with a couple of keystrokes, but he's been here for awhile and should have learned the ropes by now. Again, thanks for the help and insight. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 15:18, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Philip Bloom (filmmaker)

[edit]

Hi, I would argue that this is still an orphan, given that it has only one link from article space other than redirects, a dab page and the hatnote at Philip Bloom (businessman). One link is still enough to qualify as an orhpan. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 00:31, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are links on Vimeo and Philip Bloom according to "what links here", so technically it is deorphaned because it links to three articles of relevance. The tag maintains the backlog, which directs users interested in deorphaning to articles that are in critical need of additional links to them. I do this AWB run to reduce the backlog and direct users to articles in critical need of deorphaning. This article no longer meets the technical definition of an orphaned article, thus AWB removed the tag and removes it from the attention of people who have several thousand more articles that are in more critical need of attention in Category:Orphaned articles, Sadads (talk) 00:41, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Philip Bloom is a dab page, and the other one is only a hatnote, so I still really read this as one and at most two links. But having looked at the ophan policy again I see — as you explain — that the priority for tagging is for entries with zero links. So I'll re-remove it. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 00:47, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Monsoon session

[edit]

Hi, the problem with your bold redirection of Monsoon session is that the content relates to two articles, not one. I'm not sure if a redirect is appropriate in this situation. Is there any other alternative to deletion, eg: a disambig page or perhaps incorporating the information in the article on the Parliament of India ?- Sitush (talk) 14:52, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A dab page would also be fine, I can do that, Sadads (talk) 14:53, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I incorporated the data into Parliament of India, Sadads (talk) 15:05, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. Don't know why I didn't think of it previously - it is not the first time that I have looked at that page because it has been on Anna's silver list for a week or so. Probably because I didn't think of it in relation to a search term, but yours was a good call. - Sitush (talk) 15:09, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Media_bias_in_India

[edit]

Do you have time to check out Media bias in India? It is another of MYK's creations. I expressed some doubts about it and Anna reckoned that it should be deleted - see the article comments at her sandbox.

I am wondering whether anything that can be rescued from it might be suitable in a more general article about media bias, if there is such a thing. - Sitush (talk) 15:41, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The "such a thing" being an article, not the bias. To say that the media is biased is something of a truism. - Sitush (talk) 15:42, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think this could be rescued. The main Media bias article is not not in the best of shape either, but the sources are definitely in a poor shape, they are not altogether insignificant in indicating such a discussion exists in India. Right now, I think this is in a position adequate for seeding an article, even though it is not exactly great. Definitely needs a couple tags though, Sadads (talk) 16:02, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. The first sentence of MKY's article is lifted word-for-word from that of Media bias and is not attributed, ie: no CC-BY-SA/GFDL preservation. I'm hoping that is the only issue but will go through it again. If it is the only issue then the solution is probably just to re-word it. - Sitush (talk) 16:09, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but having gone through it line by line since my comment above I am thinking that Anna may be correct.
  • I've just removed one citation as being a blog of no obvious import
  • the Media_bias_in_India#Reasons_for_bias section is another unattributed word-for-word from Media bias (where it is also uncited
  • another citation + statement has been removed because the cite is actually a 2001 proposal to investigate the bias shown by US media when they report stories about India. The statement said there had been investigations into Indian media bias (there may have been, but this was not it, and there is no indication that the proposal even advanced to being an actual study)
  • I am querying with MKY another blog used as a source because I cannot seem to access the site at all and there is nothing at Wayback either. In any event, the statement it supports merely says that the media have been accused of political bias at some unspecified time. So what's new?
It looks to me that we will end up with an article that basically says "There is media bias in India". - Sitush (talk) 16:50, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How about a ridirect to the unreferenced but expandable Media bias in South Asia? Sadads (talk) 16:56, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure. Firstly, typing "media bias india" in search gives these two articles anyway, so redirect seems unnecessary. Secondly, the target is (as you say) uncited. It might just be stacking up a problem for the future because, tbh, Media bias in South Asia looks to me like an AfD candidate (uncited, OR, essay). Of course, when at AfD someone may take it on and improve the thing dramatically, as I did for an article a while back, But then again, they may not.
You are the admin candidate. Would it be worth testing Media bias in India at AfD? Or maybe PROD it and hope that someone turns up? I've got a lot on my plate sorting out other stuff at the moment & simply do not have the time to resolve major content issues myself, although I have done for some of the MKY articles (eg: Bishanpura).
This is turning into a longer dialog than I anticipated. Sorry about that. - Sitush (talk) 17:08, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I don't feel confident prodding it, because the topic is clearly notable and has been discussed at some level. And I don't think there is good argument for afd because it is minimumly notable. And as you point out the South Asian article is not up to par, so redirecting, though a better option, is still unclear. So this article, I would suggest, should just be one of those articles that sits for a bit and doesn't get brought up in deletion backlogs but hits other queues because of tags. I know this is against your instinctual reaction esp. since Mahesh's work popped up, but poor content in some cases is better then no content :P This is one of those low priority articles on your list of Mahesh's work to react to, Sadads (talk) 17:23, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is actually one of the few left, thankfully. I'm not sure that backlogs are a great reason not to do something, eg: User:Elen of the Roads actually more or less told me to create the WP:CCI even though there was a huge backlog at CCI. There are backlogs everywhere, even at the missing reflists category last week.
My instinct is actually to keep articles and to improve them, but this is difficult when a subject is "woolly", and this one is so woolly that we have now found at least two others dealing with the same general subject that are pretty deficient. Someone, somewhere has written an academic (or otherwise significant, reliable and independent) work about media bias; probably several people in fact. However, unless that sort of content appears we have a problem.
It is quite an awkward one, this, because even using newspaper/news website etc citations could be a self-fulfilling "COI" situation. It needs peer-reviewed content, with various news cites to demonstrate - for example - instances where one party or another has claimed bias.
BTW, examples of article rescue include Churchill Machine Tool Company, Felix Somary and the aforementioned Bishanpura. The actual list is much, much longer.
I have notified MKY of this thread. With hindsight, it should have been raised on the article talkpage & I should have just left you a link here. Sorry about that but I didn't realise what a detailed discussion this might become. - Sitush (talk) 17:38, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It pains me to see such good editors spending so many keystrokes on this. The above thread is 5,695 chrs long -- the size a good article. All over a 2 line stub. Plus the 20 min. diggging into refs and posting at other talks, and the initial silver digging. I think we need to put pressure on the bleeding. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:45, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
While we may want to have this discussion on the article talk page, I actually have no problem with that article in its current state. It is a notable topic, and it has 2 relevant references. Unless there's a copyright issue I'm not seeing, I don't see the harm in just letting in ride (although I'll cut down the see also section). If you want to merge it, I think you should follow standard procedure--open a merge discussion on Talk:Media bias, throw up the tags, etc.; that page is almost certainly well-watched, so you should get good commentary. Maybe one thing to take away from this is that in cases like this, y'all don't need to go it alone, and can spread out the work to other interested parties. This will especially help someone like Anna, who would appear to prefer to be writing new content to editing/managing other content; that's great--without her content, people like me would have nothing to edit, and the encyclopedia would be empty. But just because you spotted the problem, doesn't mean you need to solve it entirely. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:23, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fine by me. What ever puts it to bed.  :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:28, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are not in a pickle

[edit]

It's too easy to become "wiki-hoarders". "Don't throw it away. I just need to get around to fixing it. It's on my list of things to do." As the article says nothing substantive, I suggest pasting the lot into one of M's sandboxes. That way, nobody can complain that we deleted his work. It just wasn't ready for the mainspace (as was the case with many of his creations). Then I suggest replacing the content with a redirect to Media bias, or just zapping the page. We've got too many pet projects on the go with this whole thing.

And, what were we doing before this started? Oh, yeah. Building the encyclopedia in ways that we love. I miss those days, and am now rather put-off by Wikipedia. Per WP:GHERKIN, I suggest cutting through these trifles quicksmart, and pushing toward closure. My 2 cents. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:36, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Closure is great, I agree. I just tend to be the perpetual optimist with content :P. Thank you very much for pushing through this, I have been tied up with traveling and school work the last several days and regret not being able to help much :P Sadads (talk) 10:25, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'm so sorry, I didn't see your note until just now. I've been really absent from WP lately, as you can tell! I only come on once in a while these days. I only got to the end of the book for the Bonanza section, but I can try to flesh out the Juncto section when I get time. You're doing pretty well there, Sadads! Well done. Are you still in the UK? Drmies (talk) 14:31, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I am doing pretty well aren't I. I am in the UK for a little over a month longer! Feels like it is about time to go home though, missing some things and ready for a little bit of R&R in a familiar environment. How are you doing?Sadads (talk) 15:14, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
One more day of not teaching, and then summer term starts...so great, harumph. But bills have to be paid. Other than that, things are OK. The Campus Ambassador position, I guess no one at Troy needed my help, but I got invited to come to Boston in July, and that's nice. Are you going there as well? Drmies (talk) 17:04, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I will be in Boston, I look forward to seeing you. Sadads (talk) 18:08, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(butt) The RfA is doing very well, I think. I am very tempted to reverse the captions of the topmost two pics on your userpage, BTW. Perhaps I should do this before you are in a position to block me. <evil cackle> - Sitush (talk) 17:29, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Haha. Thank you for pulling strings, I promise I wont stop writing content or working on other backlogs. The tools are going to be something I phase into my editing slowly, instead of diving headfirst into ANI :P Sadads (talk) 14:47, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What's with the "debut novel" linking?

[edit]

You seem to be converting every instance of the phrase "debut novel" on Wikipedia to a wikilink. Is this not textbook overlinking? Not to mention ignoring WP:MOSDAB in indiscriminately applying the change to disambiguation pages. —chaos5023 (talk) 15:28, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well its a serious topic and there is plenty of scholarly and not so scholarly ddiscussion about the idea of a debut novel and it seems appropriate to try to bring in more traffic to (plus it is not neccessarily obvious what it is, such as the case with novel or years or something like that per WP:OVERLINK. It's one of those topics that should have been created a long time ago, but no one ever started anything, so I am catching up in the linking. I am hoping to draw in a couple more users to work on it. I will desist from the dab linking though, I do agree that I was violating WP:MOSDAB, Sadads (talk) 15:44, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. I vaguely believe that wikilinks are supposed to be used for their explanatory power, not to generate traffic. If you want to bring in other editors, you'd probably do a lot better to write a note to that effect at a likely WikiProject or two, like WP:BOOK. —chaos5023 (talk) 16:33, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well it will be explanatory, and I plan to do more expansion, but for right now it needs traffic, perhaps to entice more people to work on it :P Sadads (talk) 18:43, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

New page patrol

[edit]

Hello! I had no idea where to bring this up, and saw somewhere that you had been working on New Page Patrol. Anyway the back end is about to drop off the 30 day mark. How do we holler for help? Thanks --Tbennert (talk) 03:44, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot of options. One of them could be bringing it up on the WP:NPP talk page, also a banner at Wikipedia:Community_portal#CBB would help. Perhaps even bringing up the problem at the Community the Wikipedia:Village_pump. Or another option, is to use an invitation template to go through auto-patrolled users and invite them to participate in NPP. I am not sure what has been effective in the past. The last time things were like this was about 3 months ago, and I saw a RfC which involved someone commenting on not enought NPP's, which brought me running to support, Sadads (talk) 11:21, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice. I didn't know where to go to edit Community Portal so I appreciate the link. That is done and made a note for discussion on the NPP talk page. I may try an invitation template in the next couple of days as well. Reading the Rfc and aftermath is what caused me to start working on these pages too. Thanks again! --Tbennert (talk) 17:49, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Another star for Wikiproject novels - The Sun Also Rises. I'm trying to decide what to work on next & just cruising around in the meantime. I might start The House of Mirth fairly soon. Are you back home? Truthkeeper88 (talk) 19:42, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No still over here. Actually been having some fun, see picture to the right, I am sitting between the two girls in the back (and seriously need a haircut). The British Library was lots of fun and the British Wikimedians are a good crowd. If you are looking for some really good novels to read that have a real dirth of coverage in English Wikipedia and appeal to vagrant souls, you might want to check out Hermann Hesse's stuff. I am currently taking a course on him, and because I am moving so quick through it, I haven't gotten a chance to really add anything. They are really important novels in the German language though, and really quite influential. Off course there is always that huge backlog of tagged articles Novels has too. That could use some cruising... I try to take care of the orphans, and every once in a while get to the plot trimming. You planning on going to Wikimania or any of the DC events this summer? The GLAMs promise to turn out some interesting stuffs in the coming months, and I would like to get the chance to meet you sometime, Ragesoss gives high regards, Sadads (talk) 19:55, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You do seriously need a haircut but you look very studenty. Hate to clue you in, but I made it through all of Hesse by the time I was 16. I was lucky to have a high school teacher who was into Hesse - so I've read all of them. But, wouldn't be bad to work on those pages here. I'm really trying to work on the Am lit pages - no one else seems to do Am lit & it's my speciality, so might as well brush up. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 19:59, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
J.F. Cooper? I started a template a while ago, and their is plenty of research from the 60s and 70s but hardly any coverage of his works on Wikipedia, see Template:JFCooper. They make good starts c-class articles with a couple of journal database searches and the plots are basic enough you don't actually have to read them (I think), because the reviewers do a fair enough job. The main articles like the Last of the Mohicans are also pretty poor. I am drifting towards modern European lit (maybe even a PHD in that direction), so don't worry about the Hesse, I am sure I will circle back to him. BTW, any thoughts about Wikimania or the DC GLAM events? Sadads (talk) 20:09, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I saw your Cooper template & thought I should do something, but he's so hard to read! I'd like to do a woman, and I'm into 20th century stuff at the moment, so probably Edith Wharton because she was the first woman to receive a Pulitzer Prize. I haven't been keeping up w/ the GLAM events, but thanks for mentioning. I might be able to get to DC this year. Anyway, am trying, unsuccessfully to do a copyedit. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 20:15, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wharton sounds great! Any recommendations for reading her? Your recommendations have yet to fail me. If you want to keep in touch with what is happening in DC, the mailing list is pretty good and you may be able to hear about some chances to volunteer as part of the organization committee for Wikimania next year (and maybe get in free) :) Here is the place to sign up for the mailing list, [1], Sadads (talk) 20:28, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Couple of things about Jill Dawson's article. Please don't remove the "may not meet the notability guideline for biographies" tag without providing valid, reliable references. A reference to her website about the awards she has won is not a reliable reference as she could put anything on that page. All biographies of a living person without references will be deleted. So, it does help in the long run to add some more references. If you have questions or comments, do not hesitate to give me a yell. Bgwhite (talk) 20:06, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Verification does not = notability in all cases. I provided the link to the British Council Biography and didn't expand the biography very much beyond rewards and bibliography list because I don't currently have much in the way of time to accurately research her and am carefully monitoring the article for BLP issues. I also left the refimprove, because yes it definitely needs reference improvement, but 14+ incoming links on creation of the article dictated that it was in high demand. The notability tag was inappropriate, Sadads (talk) 20:15, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you about "Verification does not = notability in all cases" and she does appear to be notable. However the tag states, "help to establish notability by adding reliable, secondary sources". Notability has not been established. There are no reliable sources listed. I just looked at the link to the British Council Biography. The link is in the external link section and instead should be used as a reference. As I'm making the big "stink" about references, I'll add the reference, add a couple of more sentences and the remove the notability tag. Bgwhite (talk) 20:29, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I was a bit short. I already pulled the British Council biography up, and will definitely be working on the biography in the upcoming weeks (actually convinced one of my tutors at Oxford to let me write Wikipedia articles this week, and one of them is a novel she wrote). But I need to focus on that and some other Wikipedia commitments, so will not have it right away, just the redlinks I keep encountering with her name were irritating me, and thought that at the very least we could have some good lists :) Sadads (talk) 20:36, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I just added a couple more sentences. I still removed the reference to her website as that is a not a reliable source. It is however very appropriate to be in the external link section. Good luck on the rest of your Wikipedia writings. Bgwhite (talk) 20:46, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GA Reviews

[edit]

I am trying to cleanup some unfinished projects and have 4 articles nominated for GA awaiting review. If you have a spare moment over the next day or two, I would appreciate you reviewing one. I suspect my retirement may be imminent and I would like to wrap things up. Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 06:23, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I wish I could, be I feel that I am already a little overcommitted in Wikipedia stuff right now, and also need to make sure that I am focusing on schoolwork. I hope retirement from the online community won't hurt your participation in our real life activities :) You have been very useful in many areas,Sadads (talk) 11:40, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:American novels by century

[edit]

There is a case to answer that Category:American novels by century is over-categorization. It seems to have been set up last year following Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Novels/Archive 15#Category:American novels because of the need to diffuse a large category. You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Literature#Categories by century, country and genre. - Fayenatic (talk) 20:17, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I see you moved this to a spaced hyphen with the comment 'move to dash', but it already had a dash. I've moved it back to a proper dash, but thought I should clarify what you were trying to do with it. — kwami (talk) 20:25, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

British Library follow-up

[edit]

Thank you for participating in the English and Drama Editathon at the British Library on June 4. I hope you enjoyed the day and got something useful out of it.

If you are new to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, I hope you had any questions or problems answered and maybe found being a contributor as addictive as many of the regulars do. If you've got any questions or need help, please feel free to ask any of us on our talk page or by e-mail (, Tom Morris, Sadads, James F., RHaworth, The Land, AdamBMorgan), ask on the British Library collaboration page or through the Wikipedia Help Desk.

If you are interested in working on Wikipedia, you might want to consider joining one of the WikiProjects. These are places where team work between editors interested in a particular topic can be coordinated. Some suggestions for WikiProjects that may be of interest to you as a participant in the event on Saturday include Literature, Poetry or Science Fiction. A full list of literature and language related WikiProjects can be found here, and a list of all WikiProjects is here. The WikiProjects often have things that need doing, and if you need help you can often ask in their talk page.

But there are other places you can get involved. If you are interested on working on images, such as improving image descriptions, categorisation or uploading new media, consider getting involved in Wikimedia Commons. Wikisource also needs people willing to help make available original source material, and Wikiquote is trying to compile a directory of quotes which you may be able to contribute to.

If you want to continue some of the work we got started on Saturday, here are a few potential things to help with:

  • Following on from work on Ella D'Arcy on Saturday, work has started to make all of The Yellow Book available on Wikisource. If you go to the page on Wikisource and pick a volume then click on 'scan index' you can start helping to proofread pages from the journal - simply click on the page you want to work on, and go through to check that the text on the left reflects the text on the right. If you need any help with getting started, please ask User:Tom Morris.
  • If you created any new articles at the event, you might want to submit them to Did you know?.
  • If you are able to translate into other languages, why not pick one of the articles we worked on, translate it and post it on another language version of Wikipedia: there are now versions in hundreds of languages. On Wikimedia Commons, it is also possible to provide multilingual descriptions of images and categories: this enables editors on the other language versions to better find images and media files they can use in their project.
  • If you need images from the British Library to illustrate articles, please add them to the image requests page. If you would like a British LIbrary curator to help collaborate on an article, please add it to the collaborations page.
  • You might also be interested in attending GLAMcamp London.
  • To explore more articles related to the British Library, visit Portal:British Library.

Whatever you do, please tell us about the positive and negative experiences you have. On behalf of the organisers of the event, thanks again.

RfAR Political activism

[edit]

Hi Sadads, re Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#Statement_by_Sadads, I am afraid you misconstrue my motives. I am simply concerned about the number of times that Cirt has placed political campaign material on project main pages, and about his apparent willingness to use the project as a tool for external campaigns.

Everyone knows about Cirt's beef with Werner Erhard. Right now, there are three Werner Erhard pages by Cirt (all unflattering) on Wikiquote's main page, and he snuck one onto the Wikipedia main page a few weeks ago: [2][3].

Prior incidents like that show form. Combined with the evidence of coordination with offsite campaigns, they simply undermine the assumption of good faith when assessing the nature and timing of Cirt's involvement with santorum (neologism). I wouldn't mind so much if Cirt said, "Yes, I did that; it was stupid; I don't know how I got so over-involved as to let my editorial judgment be swayed". But Cirt never does, and seems painfully intent on continuing the same advocacy behaviour for as long as the community will let him.

Please accept that an editor may find this stuff problematic, simply because they care about this project. Cheers, --JN466 18:12, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not the only editor that does not see these incidents as directly connected to political motivations. Cirt is motivated by passion for certain topics, but that doesn't not mean he is deliberately wishing to misrepresent the materials which he works on (if anything, he is fairly good at bringing balance and working with consensus on fairly hairy issues). All you do is complain, and you have been yet to actually make constructive or positive comments on how to build content related to Cirt, as far as I am aware. I also do not see you campaigning against any other biased editing in the community, which happens every day (you know it as well as I). Also, the statement "Combined with the evidence of coordination with offsite campaigns," has no grounds or evidence (extremely bad faith) and is very doubtful especially when you have been vocal in offsite campaigning yourself. I am much more inclined to think that you have an axe to grind with Cirt, and do not think that this forum is an appropriate place to be trying to prove your position, please stay with the centralized discussions, in this case the ARBCOM request, Sadads (talk) 21:57, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We'll have to agree to disagree then. You've seen the post on the off-site forum, and the statement of the person who started the Jeff Stone/Anderson/Dickson campaign there that she helped Cirt with the "campaign articles" for Wikipedia. Cirt has acknowledged it. The difference between your argument and mine is that I am talking about verifiable (diffed), non-neutral edits here on this project, and you are resorting to an ad-hominem argument. I can see feelings are running high; perhaps we'll have a more pleasant conversation (ideally about something else) some time in the future. Cheers, --JN466 22:12, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, sounds good. Definitely prefer more pleasant conversation on something else in the future :) No objections to that. I personally like Novels, I like to write articles about them and read them, etc. Current recommendations: The Great Lover (novel) by Jill Dawson, Soldiers of Salamis by Javier Cercas and Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse. Sadads (talk) 22:40, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think I read Narcissus & Goldmund once (along with a bunch of other Hesse books), but it's a long time ago. Best recent novel I read was Pym (novel). It's a hoot. :) --JN466 22:49, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Common Statement?

[edit]

I started working up a combined draft of the points made by apparently like-minded people at User:Wnt/User_Faction/santorum#A_mutually_compatible_point_of_view. You're one of the 11 I think should be compatible. I'd like to get as many points as possible that everyone involved can agree on completely, so I'd much appreciate it if you could endorse the statement, and/or specify which points you reject or need reworked or explained. (and in all fairness there are a few I can see need work). Interested? Wnt (talk) 20:58, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled is to help reduce the backlog at New Page Patrol, which screens new articles for problems and tags them so that Wikipedians can handle those problems. For more information read WP:Autopatrolled, Sadads (talk) 17:49, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deorphaning articles

[edit]

I noticed part of a comment you made at the WP:RFAR page, where you said "the standard efforts for curation of Wikipedia content (creating templates to deorphan articles ...". As far as I'm aware, templates listing groups of articles are not created to deorphan those articles. To truly deorphan an article, it should be linked from within the actual text of another article, rather than from within the supporting material. I was hoping that WP:ORPHAN agrees with me, but I see that it includes the text "Identify one or more navboxes containing articles in a category common to the orphan. According to some editors, this is the very best way to de-orphan, for it provides dozens of instantaneous links if a navbox is available." I will have to see when that was added, as it annoys me immensely when I click on "what links here" and find an article linked by a navbox from articles that are only very tenuously related. I go to the article, thinking "why are these articles linked?" and then find it is because they are "linked" by a template. I've asked in the past if links from templates can be treated differently from links from outside templates, but while some developers have said it is technically possibly, I haven't seen any more movement towards implementing any functionality like that. Carcharoth (talk) 01:17, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have had success with Novel series and author templates in effectively increasing traffic to the articles that were previously orphaned, it works effectively (see list of templates on My user page). Similarly topic based articles tend to boost traffic in generally positive ways, especially if they have one or two high traffic articles and a bunch of related but more minor topics. The whole point of deorphaning is to make sure that the topic is reachable by people who may not have know that such a topic existed (effectively increase the traffic of individuals who may be interested in the topic, but not know of it). If anything navboxes are more effective at deorphaning because they give people many options in similar but not directly related areas. Other methods more often then not involve linking buried mentions of the topic in the middle of poor readership articles, and do not, in my opinion, always provide the best links. I really don't understand where such spite for links on navboxes is coming from, especially when we have over 180,000 orphaned articles that need to be dealt with effectively. I would be particularly opposed in the removal of such an element from the WP:ORPHAN page, Sadads (talk) 07:29, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the perceptions differ because you are coming at the issue from looking at articles with not many incoming links. When you have an article with lots of links, which can be a useful resource to use, it is frustrating when the 'what links here' list gets overwhelmed by the number of links originating from within navbox templates. To take an example from one of the templates you created, have a look at Template:USWWII, which includes Destroyers for Bases Agreement. Now look at the links from article namespace. Can you tell which are generated by the template being on all the articles within the template, and which are genuine links from within article text? Doesn't it strike you as strange that that article is shown as linked from Hispanic Americans in World War II or American music during World War II or Rosie the Riveter? In all three cases (and more) the only link is through the template. In contrast, a genuine link is from Foyle's War (series two) or from Anglo-American loan. It is useful to able to browse such links separately from the links provided solely by a template, not just for interest, but also to check that links are not being made incorrectly or indiscriminately. Carcharoth (talk) 00:47, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Though I could see where it would be convenient to be able to check if links are transcluded on templates, it has nothing to do with de-Orphaning articles which is a reader service, which makes information more accessible on Wikipedia. Contributer services should not be confused with reader services. And, frankly, it doesn't matter if the pages are at right angles from eachother, that is what is so great about Wikipedia, everyone I have talked to clicks on links to go to something completely different because it is intriguing, not because it is actually useful, persay. Content curation on Wikipedia has to do with providing reader services, just like museum curation has to do with providing researcher and visitor services, Sadads (talk) 06:54, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You have a point, there. I'm forever telling people to think as a reader, not an editor. Though I must confess, as a reader I rarely use navigation templates. Clearly some readers do, though! :-) Carcharoth (talk) 00:19, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, well I am glad we sorted that one out! Good news on the deorphaning, we have been able to keep the number of articles in the queue at about even for the past couple months, woot! Happy editing! Sadads (talk) 00:23, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AFD

[edit]

Given your recent AFD on Immigrant Ancestors Project, it would apear you have an intrest in ridding WP of unencyclopedic articles. While I don't agree that Immigrant Ancestors Project fits that bill exactly, there are a couple of other articles I know of that clearly do: List of Mormon family organizations & Belnap Family Organization. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 21:35, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hostile and wholly unnecessary comment. Shows your true colors, which are destructive rather than constructively critical. Classic WP sniping. And, "intrest" is spelled "interest."Stratavarious1 (talk) 01:58, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would have to concur. The only reason I came accross Immigrant Ancestors Project was because it was in the Category:Orphaned articles backlog. You can afd or prod them yourself, you know, nothing stopping you. See WP:DELETION,Sadads (talk) 05:52, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
An IP cannot successfully complete the AFD nomination process. Also it should have come as no surprise that the editor at 208.81.184.4 thought that Belnap Family Organization should be deleted, as they had already PROD'd (dif) that article, which Stratavarious1 then reverted (dif). -- 71.223.123.218 (talk) 06:03, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Note that 71.223.123.218 and 208.81.184.4 appear to be same. Stratavarious1 (talk) 04:04, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I wasn't really sure if I was going to act on either of these comments. Suggestion for the IP: create an account to do AFD if you really feel strong enough about deleting the article, Sadads (talk) 11:55, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for The Great Lover (novel)

[edit]

Calmer Waters 00:03, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Really nice! Let me know when you take it to review. It's good to see you writing, and such great quality. You're learning a lot these days, I think. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 00:16, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It was actually an assignment for one of my tutors, hence why I was able to write so much in a week. I do plan to do that with another novel soon, because some of my other Wikimedia related commitments are backing off a bit. I am not sure which article to write next. If you wouldn't mind, the article has been hanging out at WP:GAN for a couple weeks now, and I figure I will do that before Peer Review and maybe nominate it for FA. Would you mind doing the GA review? I think it probably just requires a couple stamps of approval, Sadads (talk) 08:27, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm assuming you're in transit. Don't be alarmed at my blank page - have decided to take a break for a while. I will see your review through though - I'd like to see most of the fixes made, only because you have your eyes on FAC. If you can't get to them, post here. Obviously the page is GA-worthy, but I decided to combine a bit of peer review into the mix. Just so you know. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 03:17, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Almost in transit, but will be back home this evening, and will, tomorrow morning/day get back to completing the GA review. Many apologies for putting things off, the last 5 or so days has been a little hectic :P Sadads (talk) 04:52, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problems, I expected that was the case. I've put it on hold. I wouldn't rush if I were you - you'll have a bit of culture shock when you get home. This will give me a needed break as well. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 04:56, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Huge apologies! I had a great watchlist purge a few days ago and this seemed to have been unwatched. Anyway, I thought I should have a look, thinking you were gone for the holiday weekend or something, and found it unwatched, but all the changes done. I've passed it, and all is fine now. Let me know if and when it goes on; it still needs some prose work because novel pages are held to such high standards. All in all, though, this is a nicely done page. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 23:56, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, no problem. Nice to have another GA under my belt. I think I am going to work on Soldiers of Salamis soon, we will see. I have several outreach related events I am going to soon and should probably be focusing on those :P Sadads (talk) 21:39, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just to let you know, if I ever go awol like that again in the middle of a review, please ping. Either on my page or in email. Good luck with the outreach activities. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 18:11, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I may be going AWOL every once in a while too, I am doing an awful lot for the Ambassador Program. The education summit was this weekend, and I probably have several weeks of work coming out of the program, so maybe Soldiers of Salamis may be taking a break, Sadads (talk) 22:48, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Towns in Ghana

[edit]

Please don't fork. Either merge into Category:Populated places in Ghana or populated places by region. I think its time they were split by region anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:56, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't think it was a fork, their are several "towns in country" categories already. I was mostly just trying to distribute the main Ghana cat, because Crosstemplejay hasn't been very good with his categories :P Sadads (talk) 19:06, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that's OK, I see you were trying to organize the mess that Crossjay caused. Many of the articles too are duplicates and contain incorrect info! Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:10, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He responds fairly well to hints and pointers, so if you give him little informational blurbs or pieces of advice on what he has been doing, he does a good job fixing it! You might even be able to coerce him into helping sort the cats :) Sadads (talk) 19:13, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well I and Fram have spoken to him about categories and such and he has not responded..♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:15, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He hasn't been too active in the last 5 or so days, so I think that is probably why he hasn't responded, per say. You may want to give him an invitation to participate in organizing the category, that might get him to see what is going on, Sadads (talk) 19:19, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Enemies & Allies

[edit]

I would like to nominate Enemies & Allies for GA-status. Could you do a review of it to see what else should be done beforehand? Heads up, this PROD got restored on request of the author. It's (as far as I'm concerned) unreferenced, no concerns if you want to take that to AfD. --joe deckertalk to me 15:09, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Moving pages

[edit]

Can I move an unpopular article to another title? I am one of the very few that know it. Atterion(Talk|Contribs) 00:10, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You've got me curious. Is it Baltimore? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:17, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No it's a lot of articles. But mainly I'm trying to move Koontz House (Natchez, Mississippi). That is not the modern name of the house. Atterion(Talk|Contribs) 00:23, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(Sorry to stalk, Sadads). Yes, According to google search, Koontz House does appear to be more commonly known as Green Leaves. As a new user, you are probably unable to move the page yourself. Please list the name(s) you wish to be moved here, and it will be looked after. Best wishes, and sorry about the Baltimore crack, (especially to Sadads. I actually thought this was Sitush's page at the time.) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:43, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know because I'm a descendant of that house (hard to believe, I know!). I want it moved to Green Leaves (Natchez, Mississippi), then I can improve it.

Atterion(Talk|Contribs) 17:49, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The reason for it having the title that it does is because it is listed as such as NRHP, despite its more common name. I would think that an option to moving it might be to create what is called a disambiguation page. This lists the several articles using the "Green Leaves" title in their name and allows people to search & click-through fairly efficiently. Drop me a line if you want some assistance fettling the thing - there are a lot of these NRHP stub articles lying around and developing even one of them is an improvement. - Sitush (talk) 18:00, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, you can start improving it now, if you want. Any changes would be moved over if indeed a move is the best option. - Sitush (talk) 18:01, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Green Leaves is a redirect. You can steal it. It bounces to a song by a band with that name. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:07, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear, no need to call it Green Leaves (Natchez, Mississippi. Green Leaves alone should be fine. Am I right here? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:08, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Already done it. The redirect to the song was somewhat pointless in the circumstance (just a way to drive some hits to that article, I guess). - Sitush (talk) 18:11, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think you just changed the Green Leaves redirect to go to Koontz House (Natchez, Mississippi). Don't you want to move Koontz House (Natchez, Mississippi) to Green Leaves over redirect? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:25, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure if that is appropriate. Doncram, a notoriously awkward contributor in these areas, created that article and tends to own them when it comes to titles etc. NRHP uses Koontz & I would imagine that to be the definitive source. However, I don't care which way round it is done. - Sitush (talk) 18:29, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Fine by me. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:47, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Let's have Sadads decide, since he is in a better position to deal with Doncram. D came off a 3 week block last week but has not yet edited. Possibly he has finally decided that the (ginormous) battles on various noticeboards are too much for him, but of course there could be any number of reasons. - Sitush (talk) 19:08, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is precedent for renaming NRHP articles to use the current common name of the property, but the NRHP listed name still appears in the infobox. Regardless of name, the article could benefit from some expansion and additional sources.
As for the name "Green Leaves," it's always good form to disambiguate. I added a hatnote to point to the other use of "Green Leaves." --Orlady (talk) 19:24, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well personally, I would like to see what kinds of sources support the Green Leaves, for right now the sources for the article hinges on the Koontz House name. Really, its a matter of improving the article and then moving it to the best name per the sources, IMHO. I am not partial either way, Sadads (talk) 23:29, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I would certainly encourage development of the stub. I fear that I am in the wrong place to assist much with sourcing but am certainly willing to do what I can, if only on the advice side of things (I have not checked but got the impression from earlier that Atterion might be relatively new to Wikipedia). A., just drop me a line if you need any assistance - it will make a pleasant change from the rather fractious environment I find myself working in mostly at present. - Sitush (talk) 23:39, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've moved the page to Green Leaves, and have fixed and cleaned it up, although it still has issues. I've also created Green Leaves (disambiguation) and created some redirects. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atterion (talkcontribs) 17:32, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And I have fixed it and left a note on your talk page. That was an extremely underhand move you did there, losing 1600 characters of content & citations that you do not like in the process (your dislike being as previously noted on my own talk page). You have a conflict of interest with this article and need to be careful. The move itself is fine, but the "hidden" bit of it is not. - Sitush (talk) 17:37, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Alex, I am sure you're busy, but I thought this might interest you. I had a special request from NARA staff, so I thought I would ask personally to see if you might be interested or know someone who is. I was contacted by the head of NARA's Archival Recovery Team about ways that Wikipedia might be able to raise public awareness of their activity. Now, this is a public agency, and one with an important and fascinating function, but I would still be somewhat uncomfortable for them or me to make edits related to it. So we'd like to put the question to the Wikipedians at large to see if anyone thinks this merits a mention on Wikipedia and would like to write on it. The team has received some media coverage in its own right, and might even merit an article of its own. I have listed some of the coverage, including one article last week, in my note at the bottom of Wikipedia:GLAM/NARA/To-do, but that page does not receive much traffic yet. If you're not interested or too busy to work on the request yourself, that is perfectly fine, and if you don't think it is even notable, that is also okay. :-) Dominic·t 14:38, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UK

[edit]

Hey Alex... I just emailed a United Kingdom professor, intending to email a University of Kentucky professor. If he expresses interest, are you the person he should talk to? Bob the WikipediaN (talkcontribs) 03:01, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am fine, but I will be forwarding their contact information to their regional ambassador. The ones for Kentucky can be found at http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Regional_Ambassadors/Current. It is probably better to put the person in contact with them directly, Sadads (talk) 12:18, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see there's a little confusion here...my question was who should a United Kingdom professor meet with? Bob the WikipediaN (talkcontribs) 17:55, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, yeah sure. You will want User:MartinPoulter, Sadads (talk) 22:31, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rachel Ray lead section

[edit]

I've expanded the lead section of Rachel Ray (novel), in which you recently placed a "lead too short" template; and I've removed the template. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you have a look at it and see if it's OK now? Thanks. --Ammodramus (talk) 16:17, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely looks better. Though I don't think you are quite done yet with the article, I would suggest taking it for GA, you are really getting somewhere and it would be good to get some feedback from another editor who can spend more time with you polishing the article. Also, make sure that you take a look at WP:MOS (novels), Sadads (talk) 14:12, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I'm planning to add a bit more on the Record attack on Macleod and Good Words, but won't have access to the source for a few weeks yet. Beyond that, however, I don't think that there's much that I can do with the article in the foreseeable future. I don't have a sufficient English-lit background to expand "Major themes" or write a "Style" section; and I don't have access to a good research library, so can't give the "Reception" section a much-needed expansion (including something about present-day critical thought).
Could I ask your opinion on the first paragraph under "Publication"? Is it reasonably clear who's paying how much for what? There are three different ₤500's and two different ₤1000's involved, and I was hard put to try to explain things without actually writing out sums. Did my attempt turn out reasonably well, or should I try again?
Thanks again for your kind comments on the article, and for your critique--

Fontamara

[edit]

Hello - thanks for your feedback on Fontamara. I was actually looking for something a little more constructive and was hoping for some specific comments rather than a new rating because I have come to somewhat of a halt in writing it and though when i read it i know there are problems it is difficult because I have contributed the vast majority. If you have read it i would appreciate more personal feedback if that would be possible. Thanks Cutiekatie (talk) 19:27, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ambassador Program: assessment drive

[edit]

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

School Library Journal?

[edit]

Hey Sadads. I'm thinking of trying to get Moonrise (Warriors) to FA status, so I asked around for some feedback. One thing that was pointed out was one of the references needs volume, issue, and page number. I managed to figure out the volume and issue number based on the date of the review, but it's from School Library Journal, and the link on the reflist is for a database that also requires subscription. I'm wondering if you have access to either school library journal or a databse where you could check the page number of the review for me? Thanks, Brambleclawx 18:30, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sleator novels list book "The Cupcake"

[edit]

Hi, Sadads - You created Template:William_Sleator some time ago. It lists a book called "The Cupcake." I am unable to find verification of the existence of this book. Any breadcrumbs appreciated. Royce (talk) 14:19, 6 August 2011 (UTC) (corrected login)[reply]

It was just in the list on his bio page, and I created the template because a number of his books were orphaned, I cannot find a reliable record anywhere via google that validates it's existance, and I have seen multiple comments to the contrary in a couple other places, so I am going to assume that this was a piece of subtle vandalism, Sadads (talk) 14:23, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've located the modification, and it does appear to have been vandalism (from October 2008!). Reverted. Royce (talk) 14:01, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Online Ambassadors: Time to join pods

[edit]

Hello! If you're planning to be an active Online Ambassador for the upcoming academic term, now is the time to join one or more pods. (A pod consists of the instructor, the Campus Ambassadors, and the Online Ambassadors for single class.) The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) explains the expectations for being part of a pod as an Online Ambassador. (The MOU for pods in Canada is essentially the same.) In short, the role of Online Ambassadors this term consists of:

  • Working closely with the instructor and Campus Ambassadors, providing advice and perspective as an experienced Wikipedian
  • Helping students who ask for it (or helping them to find the help they need)
  • Watching out for the class as a whole
  • Helping students to get community feedback on their work

This replaces the 1-on-1 mentoring role for Online Ambassadors that we had in previous terms; rather than being responsible for individual students (some of whom don't want or help or are unresponsive), Online Ambassadors will be there to help whichever students in their class(es) ask for help.

You can browse the upcoming courses here: United States; Canada. More are being added as new pods become active and create their course pages.

Once you've found a class that you want to work with—especially if you some interest or expertise in the topic area—you should sign the MOU listing for that class and get in touch with the instructor. We're hoping to have at least two Online Ambassadors per pod, and more for the larger classes.

If you're up for supporting any kind of class and would like me to assign you to a pod in need of more Online Ambassadors, just let me know.

--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 16:36, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

PS: There are still a lot of student articles from the last term that haven't been rated. Please rate a few and update the list!

GA review

Hey Alex, it's Kasey from Boston man. I just submitted Nuclear energy policy my article for GA status after a bit of encouraging from Rodney and others at a Campus Ambassador training session. I remembered that you offered to check it it over for GA status if I put it up. The page has pretty much quieted down since, all the major info has been added. If you get a chance, could you look it over and check it out and see if it passes? If not, what should I do to edit it to pass it. Thanks man, hope you are doing well! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Good_article_nominations#Politics_and_government

Update on courses and ambassador needs

[edit]

Hello, Ambassadors!

I wanted to give you one last update on where we are this term, before my role as Online Facilitator wraps up at the end of this week. Already, there are over 800 students in U.S. classes who have signed up on course pages this term. About 40 classes are active, and we're expecting that many more again once all the classes are up and running.

On a personal note, it's been a huge honor to work with so many great Wikipedians over the last 15 months. Thanks so much to everyone who jumped in and decided to give the ambassador concept a try, and double thanks those of you who were involved early on. Your ideas and insights and enthusiasm have been the foundation of the program, and they will be the keys the future of the program.

Courses looking for Online Ambassadors

[edit]

Still waiting to get involved with a class this term, or ready to take on more? We have seven classes that are already active and need OA support, and eleven more that have course pages started but don't have active students yet. Please consider joining one or more of these pods!

Active courses that really need Online Ambassadors:

Consensus of the Heroes in Hell Merge - Did it include all of the Books and Stories?

[edit]

According to my memory during the Lawyers in Hell AfD discussion about merging the Heroes in Hell articles into one large article, it was decided ALL the articles were to be merged. No mention was made of leaving any of the articles separate.

When I went to merge the one remaining article, one editor got really upset saying that the merge discussion did not include this article, Gilgamesh in the Outback. I believe that the consensus was for all articles. The admin who is currently handling the dispute was not involved at the time, and needs to see a show of hands. Children's Museum update

[edit]
Kit Cat Klock

It's time again to share the latest news on the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to categorize these images and distribute them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out here.

We have also donated our first video and a second GLAM-Wiki Infographic to Commons. In September we were thrilled to welcomed Jimmy Wales to the museum. Following our successful Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to Lvova!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive case study. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the Prezi.

In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to sign up for This Month in GLAM to keep up with the latest GLAM-Wiki news from around the world (subscribe).

We have a listing of High Need and Moderate Need requests on the Ways to Help section on the project page. I encourage you to lend a hand if you're able. While the Children's Museum partnership continues to truck along, we still are in desperate need of volunteers to help disperse our images and update and maintain content. Thank you for your time and help. Happy holidays! LoriLee (talk) 16:45, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Original Barnstar
Thanks for the help on The Wettest County in the World! I thought it deserved an article but I lack the wiki-knowledge to do a full article so I just wanted to get it started and you came along and saved the thing from deletion. Much appreciated! WikiRN (talk) 18:13, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the barnstar and you are welcome for the help. I love helping new users and sometimes, it takes a certain set of skills (and experience) to be able to create a well rounded wikipedia article :) Wishing you all the bests, and I hope you keep working on Wikipedia. I understand how to do most of this stuff mostly because I have been editing alot for about 3 years. You definitely have important experience and knowledge that ought to be shared, don't give up just because the website is mildly intimidating (We all know it is, but there is also something to be said for the pretty professional quality of the content we produce!) Best of luck, Sadads (talk) 18:20, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

botting/scripting & love interest

[edit]

Your hundreds of links in articles to love interest is both excessive and unnecessary. The rapid-fire timing of their execution also reeks of a bot or script operating under a live user account which is not allowed. Please revert them and refrain from this practice in the future, thanks. Srobak (talk) 00:57, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, that was not bot activity, and I am building the web on something that is definitely legitimate per Wikipedia:Building the web. Its a specific item with a specific definition that may be uncoventional for many non-western or non-native English speakers, thus a link is called for. There is a serious failure in the number of pages which are linked to that article, and their is nothing wrong with manually adding a whole bunch more links to it using http://edwardbetts.com/find_link/ . Also, I was manually reviewing and adding the links, so please don't accuse me of operating bots without approval. I see nothing wrong with my actions. Best wishes editing and happy holidays, Sadads (talk) 01:50, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are no failures - serious or otherwise - on the pages which you have linked. The determination of there being a link necessary - especially in the scope you have applied it - is not one which can be without an RFD beforehand. As for their being manually added - conducting an average of 7 to 10 different such edits per minute on different and un-related pages is not humanly possible - so please do not attempt to deflect that again. At this point - your conduct is actually disruptive, and I will urge you to again immediately cease and revert or I will bring this issue to the attention of the administrators. Srobak (talk) 15:30, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It is a failure, specific terms which much of our readership will not be aware of should be linked (I only applied it to about 170 or so pages, most of them using it in light of language characteristic of movie reviews, a language that is specific to fictional arts critics as a community). How else do you expect people to understand our content? Most editors neglect this set of small details, so I give them a little bit of help. Its a failure of the community that we don't pay attention to this in a larger scale, but there is me and a handful of others who make an effort to fill in the small gaps of awareness. Its how the community is supposed to work: collaborative error catching.
By the way, it is manual, I open about 10-15 tabs from Find Link, and then review the diffs around the change, and then scroll down in save, before moving on to the next tab while it saves the edit. I read fairly quick and I can read about 2 lines around the change in a few seconds to ensure that it makes sense. (Notice I chose not to add links on a small subset of the suggested links offered by the tool at http://edwardbetts.com/find_link/Love_interest). I do this type of editing on a regular basis if you look at my history, and I am very aware of what I am doing as a minor edit. I do something that many people neglect, that is pay attention to the interconnectivity of the content on Wikipedia. This often results in changes to a large number of pages quickly. When I do it on a larger scale, I look for approval, however, when I do it on a scale like this with such a minor change, I don't. Its like disambiguating links, or removing dashes in a commonly misspelled word, etc. Links are not RFD worthy issues.
Now this seems like a fairly minor offense for both of us to be arguing over, we are both experienced editors with other more pressing concerns in the encyclopedia and I really have no objection if you decide to revert the links that you feel are really inappropriate, but your response thus far has been of an extremely aggressive, almost to the point of absconding me. I did not mean to slight you, and I certainly haven't hurt the project, so please refrain from making this bigger then it needs to be, Sadads (talk) 15:57, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you recently edited The Profession, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Thriller (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

References to ISFDB database pages

[edit]

Hi, I see that you assessed To Ride Pegasus today and upgraded it from Start to C. Since I worked on that Stub a few months ago, I have determined to upgrade articles all the way ;-) from Stub to C more liberally.

You have worked a lot in WP:Novels. Do you have any comment regarding the "instructional" reference to ISFDB at To Ride Pegasus#References (#1)? This is an alternative to providing several particular references to pages generated by the database. At User:P64/FSF/Doona#References I have worked up one example of the polar opposite method, full citation of seven different pages generated. The wording is repetitive because I have used the {isfdb} templates but that is beside the point.

If you have any confident knowledge or opinion (or link to relevant discussion by others) about "references to numerous pages in one complex online publication, or generated by one database", then I hope you will respond to another editor and me at User talk:P64/FSF/Doona#Citations. --P64 (talk) 17:37, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
