Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Bob the Wikipedian.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination for deletion of Template:Taxobox/virus taxonomy

[edit]

Template:Taxobox/virus taxonomy has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page.

(Including the subtemplate {{Taxobox/virus taxonomy cell}}.) These were only called via {{Virusbox}}, deleted in 2013, and should have been deleted then. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:22, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know from your comment at TfD that you're still around! I'd be interested to know sometime why there was "overwhelming resistance" to having a Virusbox template. As per the discussion I started at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Viruses#Virus taxoboxes, it's very fiddly to automatically italicize virus taxon names when other taxon names at the same rank aren't italicized. The easiest way to do it would be to have a separate automated taxobox – there are seven now, so one more would hardly be a major addition. Or was it just that virus editors didn't like automated taxoboxes? Peter coxhead (talk) 23:12, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Coat of arms The Most Reverend Gerald Andrew Gettelfinger.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Oleg Bezuglov for deletion

[edit]

Dear Bob,

Since you a musician, and the professional I wonder if you could, please take a look at the Oleg Bezuglov article and consider expressing your opinion in discussion on whether it should be deleted or not. It was nominated on suspicion of not passing the WP:MUSICBIO criterion. The discussion is currently dead in the water, and I'm afraid it might be relisted again because of that. Thanks in advance! Nomination of Joshua Claybourn for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Joshua Claybourn is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Joshua Claybourn (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

Notifying you about the discussion, since you have made significant contributions to articles related to this subject. --IndyNotes (talk) 04:14, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:Cardreverse.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Old orphaned esoteric file.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Nomination for deletion of Template:Virusbox

[edit]

Template:Virusbox has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Ruslik_Zero 19:05, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have now replaced {{Taxobox/virus taxonomy}} by the standard {{Taxobox/taxonomy}}, slightly revised to handle the different italicization of virus taxon names. {{Taxobox/taxonomy}} uses Lua code in Module:Autotaxobox to traverse taxonomy templates, which completely avoids the old problem of expansion depth being exceeded. More relevantly to virus taxoboxes, taxonomy templates now have a slightly different format, which is why piped links were causing problems earlier. {{Virusbox}} is now firmly part of the automated taxobox system.

Accordingly, I have nominated {{Taxobox/virus taxonomy}} for deletion. Peter coxhead (talk) 02:20, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Albuginales

[edit]

I'm making the taxonomy of Albugo consistent across the pages to all be in the Albuginales. Albugo has an automatic taxonbox, and to put it in the Albuginales, I'd have to create the template for it. There is a note at Template:Taxonomy/Albuginales that you deleted the page in 2011, and that I should check with you before re-creating it. Abulginales was formally described in Thines & Spring. 2005. "A revision of Albugo (Chromista, Peronosporomycetes" Mycotaxon 92: 453. However, according to Thines, the name has been floating around since 1947. @Plantdrew: (courtesy ping) noted that Many of the taxonomic databases in the taxonbar do place Albugo in Albuginales, but Mycobank does have it in Peronosporales. So, if you have no objections, I'll re-create Template:Taxonomy/Albuginales so the taxonomy will be consistent across the pages. TelosCricket (talk) 13:57, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of MP 17

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on MP 17 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. scope_creepTalk 23:27, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

WikiTree suggestions at WikiConference North America this weekend

[edit]

Bob, I thought I'd give a lightning talk at this weekend's Meta:WikiConference North America/2020 about how we use Aleš's WikiTree+ to compare profiles to Wikidata to find errors. It's Friday at 17:00 EST. I'm just starting notes at this WikiTree free-space profile and would be happy to have your input. It might be challenging to co-present in such a short talk but I'm certainly open to it!

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

PRODded Analog-to-digital timeline

[edit]

Hi Bob, I just PRODded Analog-to-digital timeline. My reason is that everything is getting digitized and the list would be incredibly unwieldy. I hope you agree. — Sean Brunnock (talk) 12:05, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
