my story today

Regarding Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Motions, specifically regarding infoboxes2: you opposed without reasoning, and I am curious. I commented in the discussion, pointing at precise recent discussions which might change your mind - or not. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:42, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

My reasoning was (mostly) contained in the Comments section below it as I was still mulling over the issue when I first posted. The other comments were enough to move me to the opposition. I did see your comment and read through a few of the links, but I find myself agreeing with 2020 me; we might not have infobox "wars" but the remedies of those cases have likely helped keep things quiet. Primefac (talk) 15:48, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
Just for my understanding: what do you think they changed, or will change? My view is that most editors don't even know they exist. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:19, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
I think the editors who are the most aggressive in making their opinions known know about the remedies, and based on what happened to other editors (who did not play by the rules) have decided to tone it down appreciably. I could be wrong, people could have legitimately moved on. Ask me again in a year and I might more fully agree with you! (I am still mostly on the fence, just leaning over far enough to think it's worth keeping for now) Primefac (talk) 16:26, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
It doesn't matter if that probation is there or not. I have no idea what "the most aggressive" and "don't play by the rules" means for recent discussion. Please do me a favour, read Mozart, and if you have little time read only the closure and what Voceditenore said, and if you have more time tell me where there's aggression and not playing by the rules in that discussion. - I waited for 10 years already, and one more year doesn't really matter (provided I'll still be alive then). Also: I asked last year (not you personally) for ideas for peace. - More pics (if you click on "songs"), and today's story is on a birthday, and the real DYK was already on that birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:30, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
Today, it's a place that inspired me, musings if you have time. My corner for memory and music has today a juxtaposition of what our local church choirs offer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:15, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
I thought of Brian Bouldton today, and his ways to compromise. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:59, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

A7 criteria

Some years ago I happened to view Sugar Shot to Space and I recall thinking about deleting it, but deciding instead that someday I should get around to expanding it.

Today I saw that you speedily deleted it per WP:A7, a few days after a speedy A7 nomination was declined because the subject (a science project) wasn't among the eligible topics that qualify for A7.

Some ineligible topics are listed in WP:A7 also, and a science project isn't among those listed either.

I'm just curious (if you can remember 5 years back) aobut your thinking on this. Or was it more of a "I know it when I see it" recognition of an A7 candidate?

As an admin myself, I thought of deleting it too, but the article made a credible claim of significance, so I refrained. ~Anachronist (talk) 04:06, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Honestly couldn't say. If I had to guess, this was one of those cases where I didn't look at the history of the article to see an A7 had been declined, and in my mind it was "an obvious A7" so I just deleted it outright. The caveats and addendums surrounding A7 is one of the reasons I stopped patrolling that particular rationale for deletion... I'll restore it if you think a valid article could be written there, though. Primefac (talk) 06:05, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
No, that's OK. I had planned years ago to expand it and never got around to it. If I do get to it, I'll restore it myself, now that I know it's OK with you. ~Anachronist (talk) 18:30, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
I kept the tab open, nagging me. A week later, I finally re-created the article from scratch instead of undeleting it. I didn't think it qualified for speedy deletion due to making a credible claim of significance, but finding coverage in reliable sources was difficult. ~Anachronist (talk) 21:23, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

Restore deleted navbox?

Hello! You deleted Template:Drag Race Sverige. I wonder if you'd consider restoring, since Category:Drag Race Sverige now has 6 entries. If there's a better place for submitting this request, please let me know. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:27, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

I am not strictly opposed. Courtesy ping to Izno who closed the discussion. Primefac (talk) 09:27, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
Not sure how well this will fair, but sure. Restored. Izno (talk) 18:02, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:15, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
@Izno Would you be willing to restore Template:Drag Race Belgique, too, please? There are now four entries and a second season has been confirmed so a fifth page will be created soon. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:49, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Primebot removing WP1.0 and moving Vital

Hi, Primefac; I'm confused by Primebot edits like this one. I see the TFD re removing WP1.0 (good riddance), but at the same time the bot is removing WP1.0, it is also moving Vital out of the bannershell, when WP:TALKLEAD consensus is that they should be in the banner shell. What did I miss ? This has hit my watchlist in more places than I can easily correct manually. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 11:41, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

If Vital is supposed to be in the banner shell, then WT:AWB needs to be informed, because currently it is set up that genfixes moves it out. I will disable genfixes for the rest of the run, but know that my anyone using AWB on an article talk page with genfixes enabled will be doing the same. Primefac (talk) 11:51, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks ... I posted there, but don't speak the language, so hope I got it right. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 11:55, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
It's because AWB doesn't know it's a WikiProject banner because it doesn't have {{WikiProject in the front, from what I can tell. (It might have slightly more complex rules, but I doubt it, from when I've run AWB on talk pages.) It will do that also with redirects of WP banners as well. Izno (talk) 17:02, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Deprecated parameters in Template:Infobox Indian constituency

Hello, since May, we've had some deprecated parameters in the Template:Infobox Indian constituency, and you can find pages with these deprecated parameters in the Category:Pages using Infobox Indian constituency with deprecated parameters. I'm considering running an AWB task to make these necessary replacements. Could you please advise if this AWB task would be acceptable or if it might be classified as a WP:COSMETIC edit? – DreamRimmer (talk) 12:15, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

I'll run my bot on it later this week; 3k edits is a little silly to do manually. Primefac (talk) 12:26, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
I have some free time now, so if it's okay with you, I can take care of fixing 500-600. – DreamRimmer (talk) 12:37, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
I mean, you can do the entire thing if you want. I was offering to save you the trouble. Primefac (talk) 12:46, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for always being there to lend a helping hand. – DreamRimmer (talk) 12:49, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
I have corrected about 1000 pages, and now there are 1900 pages remaining for your bot to process. I think there's a higher risk of false positives if the bot handles it, as several parameters serve dual purposes. For example, the "year" parameter is used for both the latest election year and the establishment year in many pages. Additionally, there are issues with image parameters on multiple pages. – DreamRimmer (talk) 09:24, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Okay, sounds like doing it manually might be better then. Thanks for the update. Primefac (talk) 09:27, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Hello friend, now, there are 1200 pages left to fix, and about 100 pages need some hands-on work, which I'll take care of individually. I'm planning to submit a BRFA for these 1100 pages, and I hope you don't mind, given that PrimeBOT also handles similar tasks. I believe this is a good starting point for my BRFA, especially with elections coming up in five states of India in the next 20 days. During this time, the bot will need to update old election years on constituency pages. I'm also considering a bot task for that. – DreamRimmer (talk) 09:02, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

G12

Hi Primefac.

I couldnt help but notice you reverted your own nomination for deletion of oliver emanuel. I expect you will delete this post and I will be reporting you for abuse of admin priveleges for not allowing consennsus to be reached on a G12 copyright infringement nomination. Did you even read the nomination before deleting it, throwing allegations around and branding it nonsense. I believe a discussion should take place. An editor recently tried to make the first constructive edits since 2019 when the ENTIRE edit history was revdeleted for copyright infringement. Your response on the talk page is arrogant and dismissive. Do you believe copyright infringement is not an issue with the article or do you have an undisclosed connection with the author, in which case you should step back and let people who know what they are doing, do their job.

i request you reinstate your rfd tag and reopen the discussion. I have a number of accounts that I have openly disclosed and use for administrative tasks, that makes me a sock in your eyes, only because you have the arrogance to believe you are above the law and your own socking is ok. see you later dronebogus. 81.158.213.72 (talk) 19:29, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

There are so many problems with this post that I am not even going to attempt to respond to them. Feel free to bring me to ANI, I'm sure it will just go swimmingly for you. Primefac (talk) 20:12, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Primefac,

Thanks for enacting the lock on this band page. It was probably about time.

Please note, the issue arose from a potentially misguided Move of the page. I was reading about the bands in that scene, discovered the article and dug into citation. I found that "Common Dead" is a single artist, and a dead alias, and the existing citation show this was a man named Andrew Larenson.

While it's been explained to me that WP:COMMONNAME should persist no less, it's strange that a fellow Wikipedian has reverted other edits not relevant to the Move dispute. These edits included restoration of dead links (archived) and a few articles I found professing the identity of this subject/person and they primarily operate under their natural name.

While it remains to be seen if valid sources are found to prove that "Common Dead" is no longer their common name (no pun intended), at the very least, we shouldn't be hasty to wipe out all constructive edits. I'm a bit confused at the rampant reversions undoing valid investigative work on the subject.

How do we fix this? Metlurg (talk) 20:18, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

From my reading of the page's history, it sounds like Prax disagrees with you on the substance and reliability of the provided references, and that said references do not do enough to demonstrate that Laurenson the person is more notable than Laurenson-as-Common-Dead.
The next step is to discuss the matter on the article's talk page - is there enough to demonstrate that Laurenson should have an article about him, with Common Dead as a small part of it? Should Laurenson's bio be expanded while still keeping the page about the band? Should we have separate articles about the two? Discussing these questions and the references that support (or refute) the answers will determine how this gets "fixed". Primefac (talk) 20:25, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
I agree with the bulk of this. I again retort on the nature of edits that don't obstruct the conversation of person v.s. work as that name.
Much how notable artists have their intro sentence at top introduce their natural name first (and then followed by "known as" or "performing name"), that is the core of what I'm trying to highlight. We have demonstrated evidence, in current sources, to reveal it's a single person with alias. At the very least, the article's body and intro should reflect this. The current structure is misleading.
Alas, I can't edit without admin designation to restore even this small fact, and resign efforts to expand on the person's outside efforts from the context of Common Dead. Even leaving the Move page issue out of it, the text right now doesn't accurately reflect the subject. Metlurg (talk) 20:51, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
The page is protected to encourage discussion; it has existed on Wikipedia since 2011, so a few days without this information will not be the end of the world. Primefac (talk) 08:49, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

User Prohoshka and outing/doxxing

I'm taking the liberty of posting here since you were the admin to act on this issue previously. Not long ago you rollbacked and oversighted edits by Prohoshka, a relatively new account, at the TP of Ivan Katchanovski, a page I was involved in editing. I do not know what was on those edits, but I assume it's the same stuff Prohoshka just posted to his talk page, where he is repeating what I believe is a tweet outing four wikipedia users, among them @Bobfrombrockley, @My very best wishes and @Volunteer Marek. I believe this probably warrants nuking the edits plus an indef and removal of TP access for the user. Pings went to those outed users who I have interacted with in the past, in case they want to take their own measures with regard to this issue. Cheers. Ostalgia (talk) 11:55, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Holiday Greetings

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, people's rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. It's that time of year again. I come with hat in hand asking if you might find the time between now and the New Year to create the Editor of the Year Hall of Fame for 2024. Thanks so much! ―Buster7

MMS request - December administrator newsletter

Hello Primefac, I hope you're doing well. The December admin newsletter is ready to go. If you're available, could you please send it? (Wikipedia:Administrators' newsletter/2023/12) I'm reaching out on your talk page because it's already quite late. Also, as someone who regularly contributes to this newsletter, I've applied for MMS rights at PERM to ensure timely distribution. – DreamRimmer (talk) 14:17, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Please help with family tree.

Hi Primefac. Could you please help me with this family tree (see below)? I need to save it in my sandbox so I could clean up a messed up family tree with the relevant info. I tried to follow the family tree help page but it is too complicated, and I've noticed you've been active on that page [1]. I'll make it simple for you:

- Man 1 had 3 sons = Son A, Son B, and Son C.
- Son A had a son called Son AA.
- Son AA married a woman called Wife 1, and from that marriage had a son called Son AAA
- Son AA married a woman called Wife 2, and from that marriage 2 sons and a daughter namely - Son AAA2, Son AAA 3, and Daughter 1 (respectively).

Could you please help me design a simple tree chart like this one showing the above? No elaborate colours needed. I just want it plain and simple. Many thanks.CultureCouture (talk) 01:44, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

All I did was fix a template call, I haven't really ever used the family tree templates. From what I can tell reading the template's documentation, you just need to lay it out like a table and then fill in the relevant information. You'd have six template calls, I think:
  1. The man
  2. The lines connecting the man to his sons
  3. A, B, and C
  4. The lines connecting A to AA
  5. Wife 1, AA, and Wife 2 (probably in that order)
  6. Lines connecting AA to his children
  7. AAA, AAA2, AAA3, and Daughter 1
My suggestion would be to write out the tree on a piece of paper, and then put a box around each element of the tree (names, lines, etc). Then, fill in any blank spaces with boxes in order to figure out your white space. Then it's just a matter of plugging it all into the template.
I think the best thing for you to do is start working on a sandbox version, and if you're still stuck after a bit let me know and I'll see what I can do to help. Primefac (talk) 11:00, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Grae Cleugh

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Hi Primefac Seasons Greetings. Hope I find you well. I tried to add Grae Cleugh to notable RSAMD alumni but the page has been protected. Could you please revert. He won an Olivier award in 20002 for his debut play f*cking games 2002 Laurence Olivier Awards, Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Playwright, and https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/author/grae-cleugh/. 81.147.111.139 (talk) 12:47, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Per the comment left at the article's talk, the short answer is "no". His article was deleted and we do not keep redlinks in lists like this. Primefac (talk) 12:51, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
The article was deleted because it was created by a banned user, not because the subject is not notable. Perhaps you could create the article, it is quite short but notable. 81.147.111.139 (talk) 12:55, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Is there consensus on that "we", some notable alumni may not have articles for legal reasons. 81.147.111.139 (talk) 12:56, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I do not know who Cleugh is, nor do I really have the time or interest to write about him. You could always request that someone write the article at WP:RA. Primefac (talk) 12:57, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I made a request at articles for creation. A friend actually requested the article Grae Cleugh, and the article Playwrights' Studio Scotland created by colleagues. Unfortunately they were both deleted because I am the presumed author using socked accounts...
I should add I requested help from a "friend" because I am blocked from editing. I was blocked for trying to remove my name from a page, and was eventually succesful following a formal legal request and the source article was ammended, but my block, and sock history has not been deleted so I cannot edit or create articles. 81.147.111.139 (talk) 13:32, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Perhaps you could undo the deletion of Grae Cleugh, or at least have a quick look, 5 minutes of your time would bring it up to standard, and fix a number links on other wikipedia articles at the top of this thread. 81.147.111.139 (talk) 13:34, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I have no interest in helping out socks. Your name was hidden from the history of the page in question because it just happened to also contain copyrighted text during the same period. If the copyvio hadn't been there, your name would still be in the history. Primefac (talk) 13:42, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Shame on you Primefac... I suggest you get help. 81.147.111.139 (talk) 13:56, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

RfA questions

I was going to add this as a reply on the RfA talk page, but putting it here instead since I think the candidate wants to minimize conflict there.

Mainly just wanted to register disappointment that these questions (specifically the first one) weren't immediately nipped in the bud, and to the contrary that your comment appeared which in effect (though, I know, not by intention) legitimized/shielded them. Axe-grinding questions (suspiciously from someone who has never edited the article, but that's another story) are bad enough, and indeed usually accepted, but using RfA to probe someone's personal life to grind an axe is an IMO clear step too far. I'd prefer to see questions like that removed and, if the candidate really wants to answer, they can request they be added back. Otherwise, the more time goes by, the more they'll feel like they're compelled to answer. As such, whether because of feeling compelled or because they wanted to answer, it's too late now, and a precedent has been set that "what's your religion" is a valid question for a Wikipedia sysop. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:30, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Duly noted. Primefac (talk) 14:45, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Suggestions

Hello Primefac, as per Quarry:78718, there are 3886 pages tagged as orphans, but they have incoming links from other articles. Logically, they are not orphans. Some pages have many incoming links, while some have only one. According to Wikipedia:Orphan#Step 4: Remove orphan template, we can remove the orphan tag from articles that have at least one incoming link. Therefore, I'm considering submitting a BRFA for this task, but before this, I'd love to hear any suggestions or thoughts you might have. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:08, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

The Criteria have a lot of exceptions an addenda which your query does not seem to address: dabs, hatnotes, and the like. I worry that you would have too many false positives to blindly run a bot over that list. I think if you could narrow your criteria somehow it would help the chances of a bot request being successful. Primefac (talk) 16:44, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the friendly suggestion. I just wanted to check if there is a possibility or not, so now I have decided to abandon this idea. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:50, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Strange Post

Not sure if you are available, but this user is mass posting this on multiple pages. I'm fairly certain this is a sockpuppet, but of what or who I have no idea. Also, I'm 100% certain that a UTRS hash shouldn't be shared on Wiki (I got in trouble for that). It just strikes me as odd. Hopefully you can take a look, if not, no worries. - NeutralhomerTalk10:01, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi there! I'm working on creating entries for senior faculty at U Rochester, and noticed that you had deleted a previously-existing page for Laura Ackerman Smoller 6 years ago. Would you have any objection to my putting together a new entry for this senior medieval historian? Altenmaeren (talk) 20:19, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

Go for it. I would suggest using the Article wizard to create a draft, but if you're confident she meets the notability criteria you are welcome to create it directly in the article space. Primefac (talk) 21:06, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! I haven't looked at it for a while, but if I'm remembering correctly academics at the rank of Full Professor meet the notability criteria (leaving individual fields of research to make promotion to full a sort of "automatic" notability within the field). U Rochester is a big research university, too. Thank you for all the work you do. Altenmaeren (talk) 14:40, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

I don't know why, but this template is having trouble dealing with List of states and territories of the United States by population and is showing a bunch of ParserFunction errors. This has occurred several times in the past; perhaps the template is just badly designed. Anyway, I think you have dealt with some of the template's problems in the past; could you try to track down and deal with whatever is the matter now? Deor (talk) 18:36, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

No, it's because Wizmut removed every single <section> call in the table, meaning that it has no table information to call from. I'd ask them to restore everything they removed but I'd rather fix this sooner rather than later so I am just going to express my extreme displeasure with people blindly removing things they don't understand. Primefac (talk) 21:10, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for notifying me of this problem. I have reverted my changes and will not remove the 'section' tags as I redo them.
When trying to replicate my improvements, I will go slower, and I will also have to ask for your patience and attention to check if I break anything again. Just ping me, I'll respond :) Wizmut (talk) 21:13, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
I just saw that, thank you for the speedy response! All that's needed is to keep the <section begin/end=XXX> tags around the population values. Primefac (talk) 21:15, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Cheers, will do. Wizmut (talk) 21:16, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Second attempt is up. The graphs made by the template[3] seem to still work ok, but let me know if problems are detected elsewhere.
Note: I did not retain the 2010 data. If this is needed somewhere I can do the copy-paste gruntwork. Wizmut (talk) 16:48, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I'm pretty sure we swapped everything to 2010 once the new info dropped, so that shouldn't be a problem. Primefac (talk) 16:58, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi, can you fix this, please:

The play came out before the film, and the film is not even universally titled Any Wednesday in all territories, whereas the play is. The play is the source material.

Making the base page a dab is probably uncontroversial, but swapping the order of what is the primary target should probably be discussed via RM. Primefac (talk) 11:00, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Okay then, can we just go with disambiguating the base page then, and having that (base page), Any Wednesday (play), and Any Wednesday (film) pages? Thanks.

Surat Airport

Hello.

Can you add in the protected article Surat Airport, metric converters to imperial units and imperial converters to metric units? In this article some units are only given in imperial and metric, and this causes confusion. Both units must be given, like it is the norm in English Wikipedia, to avoid confusion. 95% of the world population use only the metric system.

Yours sincerely, Multituberculata (talk) 23:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

It looks unlikely that other administrators will respond and rectify this. Only "25,520 sq.m." in the "Expanded terminal" section, and "14,000 sq.ft.", "10,800 sq.ft." and "3,200 sq.ft." in the "Cargo terminal" section, need to have converters added. When you have the time, can you add them? I wish you a Happy New Year. Multituberculata (talk) 05:05, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Second account for privacy reasons

Dear sir, I have received a warning by a lawyer of the subject of several WP articles, to cease and desist from editing, or else I was threatened that law actions would be taken, which is minimum very costly. That warning was issued by the lawyer already in September last year. Since then, I changed my user name, but I realize, that through my edit history I would still be easily identifiable to them. Through some misfortune, some common "friend" has leaked my private information to them, name, email, address. The articles in question are Vishwananda and Bhakti Marga (organisation), as well as their German versions. In fact I am German, and started with the German versions. Since the the articles have been heavily edited, in an effort to remove critical information, or soften it out etc. The same effort is going on at the de:Vishwananda article (though not quite as successful). I thought, that one way to maybe circumvent this situation, is having a second account, while being visible to WP admins, is not so easily identifiable with me. I don't think I am actually offending German law, but the risk of a costly lawsuit is just too much for me. Also they employ the most expensive lawyers in Germany, specialized on social media. Thanks for listening to me, and please give me advice and help me if possible. Thank you. Juramidam (talk) 11:42, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

I3manja, my best advice is to contact the WMF's Legal team on legal@wikimedia.org. They will be able to advise you on how to proceed. Primefac (talk) 11:57, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Aspersion

You replied to your own comment on my talk page before I could respond. Nonetheless, before you wrote on my talk page I decided against emailing Arbcom because the proof wasn't as good as last time. I have three separate pieces of evidence dating as far back as 2010. I have sat on this information since May, but I really don't want to wrongfully ruin a powerful editor's reputation. If I posted the information publicly (which I won't), the site that shall not be named would have a field day. Scorpions1325 (talk) 07:07, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Just note, that the on-wiki action this person did, combined with the things I knew about them previously had me highly concerned. Scorpions1325 (talk) 07:09, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Fair enough, I trust your judgement on the matter. Primefac (talk) 07:37, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I just spoke with someone privately on Discord, where they told me how to use some "tools." I have now just realized that the evidence I have left is not incriminating at all, and that I should have just asked a question about how to use these "tools" at the help desk, and gone to Arbcom if I found anything horrifying. I am sorry to anyone reading this who I had concerned. Scorpions1325 (talk) 03:20, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Deprecated GS templates

Hi Primefac, I was wondering a little bit about the closure [4]. I feel many editors made a strong argument for why the history should remain visible, and the only editor (courtesy ping to Pppery) opposing redirecting could have had their objection addressed via marking historical with a link to the new template, for instance. Would you be opposed to amending, or perhaps reopening? I'm not going to make a huge fuss about this, but GS/DS policy is arcane enough without us disappearing some of the historical documentation. Vanamonde93 (talk) 20:05, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

I count an even split between those who are wanting deletion vs those who think it is better to redirect (ignoring the two people who expressed no preference for either). It was actually pppery's argument that I found most compelling. The workaround your propose doesn't work, though - you can't make a page a redirect and make it show as a historical template, and everyone is pretty much in agreement that the templates should either be redirected or deleted so leaving the templates be/marking them historical is not really an option. I will give some time for pppery to respond here and continue to think about the matter. Primefac (talk) 14:30, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
On reflection perhaps it's best to drop the matter. The intent of my comment (and, as I read it, that of Wugapodes and Trialpears) was to preserve documentation in some way. Redirecting would do so, but so would marking the templates as historical. But, I recognize you can't really do that given the opinions presented, and it's not a matter so important that I think it's worth soliciting a lot more input. Best, Vanamonde93 (talk) 14:57, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
No worries, thanks for asking for a second look (I do sometimes make mistakes!). Primefac (talk) 14:59, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

Copyvio revdel on Talk:Joanne Harris

I'm confused why you've revdel'd a large chunk of discussion from Talk:Joanne Harris. If I remember rightly (though I'm not sure) the text in question was a single letter from The Times but in any case WP:COPYVIO does not need us to remove text from talk pages.

Would you consider reversing the revdel, so that the full discussion remains available? — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 20:05, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

I removed two entire articles from The Times, because that content represents a copyright violation. "It's behind a paywall" is not a valid exception to our copyright rules. Primefac (talk) 20:15, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Indeed "it's behind a paywall" is not a valid exception to our copyright rules.
But surely we only need to redact the content from the talk: pages, not delete all revisions containing the text? Revdels mean that the diff functionality doesn't work, for example.
All our guidelines around copyvio are about mainspace; I don't agree that we need to revdel contents out of multiple Talk: discussions, surely? — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 20:27, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
First, a copyright violation is a copyright violation. We do not allow CVs anywhere on Wikipedia. Full stop.
Second, we are required to remove the copyright violation from all versions of the page, because every edit to Wikipedia is supposed to be published under a Creative Commons license and allowed to be reused. If there is copyrighted content, it is breaking that licensing. That means every diff from when the content was added to the diff before it was removed. Primefac (talk) 20:31, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Oh of course; I hadn't considered that we CC-licence our Talk: pages as well. Thanks for explaining so patiently 😅 — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 20:51, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Any time. Some of our rules seem weird at first until you dig into the reasons why. Primefac (talk) 20:52, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
As part of the same discussions, some paywalled Times articles were also pasted to Talk:Monisha Rajesh, if you've got a moment to revdel them, Primefac. Hadn't realised it was a problem until seeing the case above. Thanks in advance. Belbury (talk) 11:08, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Template:Family name hatnote

Hi @Primefac, can I ask you to make an addition at Template:Family name hatnote? It would be very helpful to have a "Medieval" entry. This would be for names like "Konrad von Würzburg". I would be looking for a text that reads something like this:

In this medieval name, the personal name is Konrad, and von Würzburg is an appellation or descriptor. There is no family name. This person should be listed alphabetically under Konrad.

I wouldn't want to make the hatnote too long, but what we are really needing to get at is that after the first reference, he should be referred to for short as "Konrad", never as "Würzburg", which is the town he was born in. See here for more: https://worcestercathedrallibrary.wordpress.com/2017/06/20/whats-in-a-medieval-second-name/ This would be very useful for medieval English, French, German and Dutch authors, among others. I would be very grateful if you could help here. Doric Loon (talk) 16:04, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in replying. It might be a bit wordy (though I do realise some of the others are very wordy) but otherwise I don't see any issue. If Konrad is the only one, though, it might not be worth the extra effort. Primefac (talk) 14:08, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh gosh, I didn't see you had answered. No, Konrad is not the only one. I expect to see this used on several hundred articles - the vast majority of writers in Middle English, Middle High German, and Middle Dutch. If it is too wordy, we can maybe shorten it
In this medieval name, the personal name is Konrad, and von Würzburg is an appellation. List alphabetically under Konrad.
I would not be surprised if somebody comes along and wants to change "appellation" to something else: descriptor or identifier are both used, and I don't feel strongly about it. Doric Loon (talk) 16:00, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Okay, I'll see about adding it in. Primefac (talk) 11:55, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Byson the scientist

Hi Primefac

You recently reverted the page User:Brysonthescientist/sandbox.

I draw your attention to this page Wikipedia:Misuse of the sandbox, specifically the first topic unacceptable use of the sandbox, removal of header, declined draft.

It is presumed to be an attack page G10 as no one in their right mind would open an account make one edit to add their name to the sandbox, and never edit again.

I have added a speedy delete template, technical, G6. could you please add the correct template if I made a mistake, and delete. Please make sure the log and undelete information is recorded properly.

I have reported this incident to legal for abuse of admin priveleges to preserve a page that if I created would get deleted instantly (not you). Hacking could of course be an issue but I thought that problem had been solved long before i became involved, circa 2010.

regards 81.136.50.58 (talk) 12:41, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

There is so much wrong with your post that I feel compelled to reply, even though I am sure at this point you are either grasping at straws or trolling; if it is the latter case... congratulations, you win?
  • The information page you reference refers to Wikipedia:Sandbox, not "any user sandbox" (the latter of which I note is exempted from most of those "rules").
  • Writing someone's name in a sandbox is usually an indication that they plan on writing about that person.
  • You did make a mistake by nominating the page for deletion, a fact which six admins agreed on.
  • Legal is not the venue to report abuse of administrative privileges; that is the Arbitration Committee (though you've already spammed all of us already to no effect).
I really hope you get over this delusional fantasy that you are going to get your name fully expunged from every possible location on Wikipedia, because it is just not going to happen. The sooner you come to that realisation, the better we all will be. I am done attempting to find explanations for why you are wrong in some hope that you will actually see that it is true. Primefac (talk) 13:06, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi Primefac
  • Regarding Bryson the scientist, Stale draft, 5 years without any progress, and just one edit without a reference suggests (to me anyway) that it is a test page of some sort.
  • Is it a fact or your opinion that my full real name is exempt from the personal information redaction guidelines?
Confirm by replying to me personally using my name, for example, Hi A***** P*******, otherwise you can call me Yew from now on.
  • I cannot find a specific court ruling eg Wade Vs Smith but the below links to the US/UK Supreme Court, and ICO are in support of my opinion a name is personal information.
  • Please include references in your reply in support of your opinion.

critisism

I'm unhappy with your oversight action related to #2024011910001738. I really don't think it was appropriate for you just so delete the page and leave it there considering the contents of the page. I was in a meeting so I didn't have time to write what I was asking for, but the main reason I contacted you (OS) was because I thought these situations would be common to you and you'd be able to help or know where to defer them further (T&S, global helpline numbers?) That didn't happen. Maybe this also shows that resources should be more easily accessible to contributors to assist in these cases. NotAGenious (talk) 08:19, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

It was absolutely appropriate for me to delete the page under WP:OSPOL #1; there was private and personal information that should not be shared on Wikipedia. These situations are common to me, and I do know how to deal with them. The fact that all you received is a confirmation that the content was suppressed does not mean that it is necessarily the only thing that happened with regard to this situation. BRFA question

Hello Primefac,

Back in May of 2023 you had approved my bot's second task. Shortly thereafter, my motivation for editing had dropped, which is why I am only starting on this task now.

Anyway, backstory over! In that approval, you commented "There is no prejudice against converting this to an as-needed bot task if it is found to be useful." I am in fact interested in making that task an as-needed task, as I am still working through many pages and I'm sure there are many more I haven't found yet. What do I need to do to make this change happen? Do I need to create another BRFA or simply request for the bot flag to be made permanent?

Thanks so much! :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 03:15, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

History merge request

I created Draft:Klara And The Sun (film) in May 2023. Never seemed to notice the capitalized A in and so I missed the fact there was a deleted version at the time. So this month, @KingArti: requested that Draft:Klara and the Sun (film) be undeleted, resulting in two drafts on the same topic. As the deleted draft existed two years earlier, I'm requesting the one I created be merged into it so that it's history is retained. Rusted AutoParts 19:42, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

If you did not copy/paste directly from the older draft, then there is no attribution that needs to be preserved, and thus no histmerge needed. Primefac (talk) 19:52, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

CKGM-AM

The naming convention for broadcast stations hd been to go with what the callsign assigned to it by the regulator. As far as I know, Canada (like the United States) does not issue -AM suffixes, so it should go by the base callsign CKGM. Mexico’s regulator seems to add -AM suffixes. Any questions you have you can ask me, or in WP:WPRS. Hope that helps! Stereorock (talk) 18:58, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Of the 1200 Canadian broadcast stations that I have dealt with this afternoon, <100 do not have the -AM suffix, which makes me think it's an oversight rather than a naming convention. Primefac (talk) 19:00, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
If Industry Canada doesn’t issue it, none should have them. All F.M. stations in Canada *do* have the -FM suffix, though. Shortwave stations don’t, but television stations have -DT suffixes (or -TV if they’re still analog, except the CBC stations, it seems). Stereorock (talk) 19:05, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
Going to put a link to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (broadcasting) and its child, Wikipedia:Naming conventions (broadcasting)/Call sign appendix. The latter page reads, AM stations are not suffixed but may take silent disambiguators—parenthetical short disambiguators—where needed. These pages should be moved back. I appreciate that NCBC is unusual across the project, but please take a look or ask first. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:58, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Sure. Fixed. Primefac (talk) 07:39, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Possible error by PrimeBOT

Hi Primefac. I'm not sure PrimeBOT did the right thing here. The TfD discussion seems to suggest the template should either be substed or just deleted altogether. DH85868993 (talk) 08:58, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

Yeah, I was dealing with a ton of GIGO cases regarding how the banner was used. I thought I caught all of the exceptions but clearly I missed one. Thanks. Primefac (talk) 09:12, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Technical Barnstar
Thanks for adding the parameter to the infobox for 2023–24 Asian winter! That was a new article I made, wanting to make sure that there weren't only winter articles for North America and Europe, only that meant some things weren't there, like the infobox. Cue you fixing it, leading to me sending this barnstar! Thanks - keep up the good edits. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:01, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

Keyserzozie

Hallo @Primefac, when you blocked User:Keyserzozie, you don't seem to have left a message on their talk page telling them the usual stuff about how to appeal a block. They have now tried to appeal but not, I think, done it right. Could you perhaps have a look at User talk:Keyserzozie#Account blocked. and offer them any appropriate advice? Or does appealing not apply when a user is blocked for socking? PamD 23:21, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

That's a VE copy/paste bug. I've fixed the tags which should sort the issue. Don't remember how I ended up blocking (like, which buttons I pressed) because usually it leaves a message for the blocked editor. Primefac (talk) 06:34, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
Perhaps it would be as well to check that you have actually left a talk page message when you block an editor, rather than trust the system to have done so? Especially when blocking a fairly inexperienced editor. Thanks. PamD 06:55, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
Well, yes. Primefac (talk) 07:10, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Loss of AFCH helper script

Hi Primefac,

I've been using the AFCH helper script since my request was approved, but I seem to have lost access to it (keep getting the popup error message) and no idea why. I've tried the debugging steps listed on the page where the users who have access to it are listed.

Thank you for the help! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 22:17, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

You were not approved for AFCH - the link you have provided is to your pending changes reviewer request. I do note that you were temporarily granted NPR rights which would have given you access, but since that has lapsed you will need to either re-apply for NPR or AFCH. Primefac (talk) 07:27, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
Ah, thank you! I understand why, and sorry for providing the wrong link! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:08, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Miscellaneous

Does not need to be relisted

Hi, Primefac - as I explained in the related discussion, that topicon is one I designed and wbm1058 made into a topicon at my request. There are many VRT designs an agent can use on their user pages, but my design is the only topicon. As I explained, OTRS no longer exists. Regardless, this is not within Wikipedia's jurisdiction unless I am violating a user page restriction, and I do not believe that is the case. We have already been through this a few years ago, and I hope this is not going to happen every time a new editor decides to do a little template housekeeping. Atsme 💬 📧 00:23, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Okay, two things. First, {{Volunteer Response Team topicon}} is not being nominated for deletion, it is being nominated for merging with {{OTRS topicon}} - nothing is changing to the former template. Second, I did need to relist the discussion, because currently opinions are split between deleting {{OTRS topicon}} or simply redirecting it to {{Volunteer Response Team topicon}}. Primefac (talk) 07:19, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. Question: OTRS topicon shows (at the top) Wikimedia template - not sure if that is of any importance. Also, there are 10 Template:OTRS topicon1,topicon2, the doc files, etc. Considering OTRS is non-existent, I hope it's not going to require the same procedure for each. j/s Atsme 💬 📧 13:35, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
There are three OTRS templates. Primefac (talk) 14:12, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Uhm...in the search bar, Template:OTRS also brings up the following in the dropdown, and this doesn't count the WP:OTRS stuff.
Template:OTRS received subcat starter
Template:OTRS pending subcat starter
Template:OTRS topicon1/doc + docs for the other templates, or does the doc file get deleted at the same time?
Template:OTRS recruit Atsme 💬 📧 15:40, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Interesting. Clearly someone failed to do their due diligence when creating these templates...
Documentation pages are treated as part of the main template, so whatever happens to a template generally is done to the /doc as well. Primefac (talk) 15:49, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Revert for Sourcing for Pages

This is in realtion to reverts done to the [Greene County, Virginia] page. Edits were reverted for being "unsourced". In the future, it would be more helpful the community to instead add in request for citation tags. This is particularly true when reverting to content that was also not sourced by a tagged reference. Adding in the request for citation tag would also help to ensure edits are not labelled as "unsourced', when they were. Absolute4331 (talk) 15:54, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Sounds good. Primefac (talk) 17:55, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

HistMerge help

Hey there. I saw you were involved in some of the discussions at the histmerge request, and was wondering if you could assist with the split that needs to happen with Draft:Eyes of Wakanda. I made the request on January 19 and it has yet to be attended too. Happy to give more info on what needs to happen with the split if needed. Thanks. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 17:51, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take a look. Apologies for the delay, I've been slacking in my day-to-day admin activities. Primefac (talk) 17:55, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
No worries, I've been busy myself and only just realized it had yet to be addressed. In the tag on the draft I noted I believed it seemed straight forward, but if you need clarify let me know. Much appreciated it! - Favre1fan93 (talk) 18:43, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Personal note

Hi Primefac, I'd just like to say, on a personal level, that I'm sincerely sorry for letting you down in my recent actions, and that I'll always be thankful for your granting of template permissions six years ago, since which I've made hundreds of edits in that namespace, almost entirely without issue. It's been a challenging time for me personally, and while this isn't an excuse, it has impacted my abilities, which is why I'm considering taking some time off, especially in template space. I assure you that every edit I've made was with the best intentions. I value the templates project deeply, and I hope that I'm able to prove that to you in the future. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 16:50, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I will say that I never like having to get to the point of removing (or asking for opinions on removing) someone's permissions, especially for something like TPE where we need as many good editors as we can get. You're not a bad template editor, and I know that you've always acted in good faith. Hopefully this is just a bump in the metaphorical road. Primefac (talk) 17:54, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

BLP

Hi! Found you through the 'recently active admins' page. There's some dispute about some unsourced BLP-related content at Talk:Tim Hunt I have been trying to remove,[6] that could do with a quiet look over from an admin.

Regarding an edit to Paper Mario

Hey Primefac, this isn't a big deal whatsoever since this edit was almost two years ago now, but I just don't like knowing that it's there; many people on Twitter saw this revision and posted about it when it was at TFA, and this is one of my favorite works on the site. I was wondering if it was justifiable to have an old revision or two deleted? I may be more sensitive than others but I feel it passes RD2 of WP:CRD.

This is the revision in question, and you don't need to scroll down to know what they did. The revision two prior to this one also has a gross copy-paste in its edit summary, although I'm not sure if it's possible to redact that. If it doesn't meet the criteria and this is traditional vandalism (although I've never seen worse haha) I understand. Panini! 🥪 03:49, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Also, I'm not too sure if you're the best person to reach out to for this stuff, but you once redacted something on my user page when I first started so you came to mind when I think of this type of issue. Panini! 🥪 03:53, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
Done. I am genuinely amazed that a TFA page (and an FA at that!) managed to get that level of vandalism without the content being RD'd. Primefac (talk) 07:36, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks @Primefac! And sorry for the inconvenience, but now I can sleep easy at night. Panini! 🥪 17:33, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Front Street office buildings

Hi there! In this edit to the Front Street office buildings article, your bot accidentally removed the --> from the end of a URL, which caused part of the article and its categories from being viewed. I don't know if there's a way to prevent this in the future, but I thought I'd let you know. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 07:07, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Uh.... maybe? I'm not sure if the regex can get that granular, and if this isn't just a GIGO issue, but I'll have a think. I do feel like there are some minor code fixes that I need to do (the order of the tracking variables matters, for some reason) so I'll add that to my list of debugs. Module:Country alias

Hello! Can you see regarding the Latvian country alias module and communicate with the Latvian user who has created this module?. I see that they use a old version of the module long before the new one was created. Can you communicate with the Latvian user and see how you can do it. 80.212.168.110 (talk) 10:39, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

I don't speak Latvian so any language changes between the two versions will be well beyond my comprehension. Primefac (talk) 14:54, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Portal German Empire

I was pointed to you as someone who might be able to resolve this following your comment on Explicits talk page re Portal World War II. Currently there are a lot of entries in Category:Portal templates with redlinked portals for German Colonial countries following the deletion of Portal German empire. These are through templates so I am unable to resolve them. I think a link to German Empire needs to be removed from the templates(s) or changed to Portal Germany. Possibly there is also a link to non existent countries causing the problem. Can you help? Lyndaship (talk) 13:48, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Oh, right, there was no followup so it slipped off my radar. I've got cleanup running now. Primefac (talk) 15:39, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
I made an edit to {{YearInCountryPortalBox/make}} that should clear many pages from Category:Portal templates with redlinked portals automatically. BHG sure left some messes behind. I hope when I eventually leave WP people do not say the same about me. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:19, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Oh good, thanks for that. I started digging into the yearboxes and gave up. Primefac (talk) 16:38, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Jonesey95 has successfully sorted the German empire portal problem. I noticed that your bot removed all links to Portal World War II, can you do the same for Portal World War I which was also recently deleted? I also noticed that the bot removed links on pages other than mainspace and Category - I'm not sure if this is desirable as it will ruin old discussions Lyndaship (talk) 07:01, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
The bot only removed links that were being generated from the {{portal}} family of templates. It did not remove any direct links (e.g. Portal:World War II). Primefac (talk) 07:11, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Ok this was mentioned to me as a questionable edit Lyndaship (talk) 07:19, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I just dropped by to thank you for adding the medieval Family Name Hatnote, and I see the thread has disappeared into your archive. It's working well, so thanks for that. If you have a moment for a minor correction, the word "is" appears twice in the template, and strictly speaking once would be enough ;-). But that's a detail the wikignomes will fix anyway. Thanks again for helping out. Doric Loon (talk) 14:01, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Bible Gateway template

Hi. I see that your bot has replaced the old Bible Gateway access template, bibleref2, with the Oremus one (bibleverse), which is till working, but MUCH poorer. This happened after B.Gtw. discontinued acces via Wiki template, so I thought: maybe you know what happened? And, more importantly: can that be reversed? They have so many different translations to choose from, there was a trick how to avoid repeating the name of the biblical book but still link to the verse number, and, and, and. Lightyears better.

If it was a Wiki decision, how can we try to reverse it? If it was BG's, maybe we can still negotiate something?

Thank you! Arminden (talk) 12:28, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

There was a TFD about the template family that resulted in everything being merged to {{bibleverse}}. All of the options that were previously available in the various templates, including avoiding the book name and linking to Bible Gateway, are still available and described in the Examples and List of versions. If anything is lacking or otherwise not seeming to work correctly, please post on the template talk page so that it can be sorted out. Primefac (talk) 12:35, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

Deleted material from Draft:Warren C. Trenchard

I would like an explanation for why you deleted a large amount of material from the draft page noted above. The log mentioned copyright issues. What are the copyright issues? I know of none. Everything was properly referenced.I would like to have had a head-up before you did this and have had an opportunity to discuss whatever concerns you had. This is, after all, merely a draft article, not a public piece. What is even worse, I can't seem to even recover or examine what you deleted. This is unacceptable.Wctrenchard (talk) 20:58, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

The copyright issue is that copying directly from an external source to Wikipedia is a copyright violation, especially when the page in question is marked as Copyright © 2024 Warren C. Trenchard. You were given the heads up, and have engaged in multiple discussions about the matter, so this really should not come as a surprise. That being said, administrators are not required to discuss copyright violations before they are removed, as they need to be removed immediately. Primefac (talk) 07:14, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
