Tips
- Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
- It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
- If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
- Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
- When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
- If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
- Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.
Happy editing! Cheers, Doug Weller talk 09:42, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Please be more polite
[edit]You are a very inexperienced editor - 25 edits. You posted to someone with almost 200,000 edits and who, like me, has held or holds most of the very senior Admin posts that Wikipedia has. Actually that shouldn't matter, because we should always treat other editors politely. I also have to ask if this is your first account. It doesn't appear to be. - Hello Doug -
- Thank you for the note. Apologies if one of my comments came across as impolite, that was not my intention, it was only meant as constructive feedback. I tried to present my reasoning for the disagreement and a suggested way forward in a a fact based and collegial way as possible. If there was a particular portion of that post that you identified as impolite, please do let me know so that I can improve myself in the future.
- You are correct this is not my first account, I had one years and years ago with a long gap between (maybe a few random one offs done anonymously), but that login is lost to the ages now (but I am very much enjoying the "new" visual editor and preview panes) Absolute4331 (talk) 14:21, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- It felt patronising. Did you see their reply? It was ":Sounds good". Did you thank them? Doug Weller talk 16:11, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I am confused. We seem to have changed tacks here. Do you feel like my comment was patronizing or impolite?
- I didn't feel like the reply of "sounds good" necessitated a reply and that was intended to be the end of the discussion. Absolute4331 (talk) 14:59, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Absolute4331 Patronising. And yes, you should have thanks them by replying or sending thanks. Doug Weller talk 16:15, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- I am very sorry you feel that my comment was patronizing. I feel like it was valid, constructive feedback presented in a collegial manner. I admittedly did not check the user's edit history prior to making my remarks to see how "senior" they were, but I don't see why making 200k+ edits should preclude them from hearing feedback?
- I think a better example of being "patronizing" would be a third party involving themselves in an unrelated discussion, while trying to throw around their wikipedia "seniority" and attempting to enforce their own opinions on when a conversation ends.
