AfC

Hi. I've added you to the list of active reviewers at Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants. Alternatively you may also want to take a look at WP:NPP, which shares many similarities. I won't be editing actively for a while, but I'll be around whenever you have any questions. Cheers, Alex Shih (talk) 19:46, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, Alex Shih! I am excited about this, and look forward to exploring and helping out with AfC and NPP. = paul2520 (talk) 12:47, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

DYK for James Fugaté

On 10 November 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article James Fugaté, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that James Fugaté was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy after it was revealed that he wrote Quatrefoil: A Modern Novel under the pen name James Barr? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/James Fugaté. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, James Fugaté), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Captial Gay request at the Resource Exchange

Hello. I noticed that you were offering your resources at the World Contest on LGBT publications. I was wondering if you could help with this request at the Resource Exchange:

  • Capital Gay, July 5th, 1985, pages 9 and 11, and the surrounding pages, if they deal with the striking miners' presence at London Pride in 1985, OCLC 952386189 (Online, with Gale Cengage access) and OCLC 724040251 (print).

If you happen to have access and would like to help with this request, please feel free to. Otherwwise, if you happen to know someone else who could help, let me know. Thanks. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:29, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out, MrLinkinPark333! I've replied to the thread - in short, I don't have direct access, but have reached out to the Tretter Collection, who may. = paul2520 (talk) 21:33, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewing

Hello, Paul2520.

I've seen you editing recently and you seem knowledgeable about Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. Thanks. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 09:26, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out, Insertcleverphrasehere. Reading the tutorial has been one of the most interesting rabbit holes since falling into Wikipedia in the first place. I still have to parse the tools and further reading at the bottom, but I'm definitely interested in becoming a New Page Reviewer. So I take it my next steps are to apply and subsequently (should I be accepted) go to school? = paul2520 (talk) 03:31, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
Yep, request at PERM. To be honest, I'm not sure that the school is in session any more (though I might decide to resurrect it soon). If you have read the tutorial and start cautiously, you should be right. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 04:04, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
Hey mate, I saw your other message about the school. The things I'd suggest is going for reviewing some of the 'easier' articles first and working your way up. Use the flowchart on the new page patrol tutorial page (which looks complicated but is relatively simple to use), and if you run into any trouble feel free to drop me a message. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 19:59, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Insertcleverphrasehere! I will try and find time over the weekend to do exactly that. I appreciate the advice, and that I can reach out with issues/difficulties. = paul2520 (talk) 20:00, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello Paul2520. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. TonyBallioni (talk) 21:04, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, TonyBallioni. I see what you mean about project space contributions. Yes, I'm the kind that strives to do their homework. I will tread carefully, especially as I am new to this. I do intend to reach out about the NPP school. = paul2520 (talk) 13:00, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Paul2520. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Paul2520, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Articles for Creation Reviewing

Hello, Paul2520.
AfC submissions
Random submission

Purge to update

I recently sent you an invitation to join NPP, but you also might be the right candidate for another related project, AfC, which is also extremely backlogged.
Would you please consider becoming an Articles for Creation reviewer? Articles for Creation reviewers help new users learn the ropes of creating their first articles, and identify whether topics are suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. Reviewing drafts doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia inclusion policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After requesting to be added to the project, reviewing is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the reviewing instructions before making your decision. Thanks. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 03:08, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the message, Insertcleverphrasehere. I am actually an AfC reviewer, too! But I haven't been active with either yet. I do plan to - and your message is a good push for a renewed sense of ambition as we begin 2018. = paul2520 (talk) 03:39, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Paul2520, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Re: DYK: The Dead South

As per this nomination (where I was unable to address your questions directly), I'd like to address those questions here, if that would be okay.
First of all, I would very much appreciate some help with any reference irregularities you find. I thought I used to know how to add refs, but apparently, I've fogotten anything but adding the entire reference each time. I know there is a better way, but I couldn't figure it out.
Secondly, no - the band was never called "Mumford and Sons Evil Twin"; its something the band members refers to itself as.
Third, while the question is indeed the title of the ref, it is a question that the reviewer asks (and answers). As for further refefences for the albums, I have no doubt that they exist. Part of the DYK's purpose is to get editors and readers to visit the article and likely add content and other info.
Regarding the Earwig similarities, I cited the first instance of a quote or phrase. I was unsure whether to cite subsequent sentences within the same paragraph that came from the same source. I used references that reviewed each of the albums; I didn't find any negative reviews (in the interest of balance, I'd have added them), so i added what I could. I thought I was pretty careful in avoiding any OR or SYN by only noting what the sources said. I am presuming that others will add to and reshape into better prose the quotes from sources.
Lastly, I had hoped to use the hook as the name of the group is The Dead South, but they - unlike most bluegrass bands - are not from the (American) South. They're Canucks, every one of them. I guess an alternate hook could be the Mumford and Sons Evil trwins thing, but it feels weaker than the initial hook proposed. Thoughts? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 04:49, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Jack Sebastian. I've fixed the reference issues. See this edit; looks like you had the same references multiple times. You only need to have them once, then use the name to cite the same thing again.
Thanks for rewording about the "Evil Twin" name.
As for your last point - like I said in the review, I'm fine with the hooks. It was only a suggestion. Thanks for considering.
Relating to the other points, it's about wording. Not worried about negative reviews or OR/SYN; I think you did a good job of finding references that discuss the band/albums. I am worried about what you point out - reshaping into better prose. I think this is important to make the article DYK-ready. = paul2520 (talk) 05:25, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
I'll try to address the prose tomorrow; as I said. I had been hoping that the new eyes a DYK would bring might help that along as well. Thanks for all your help so far. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 07:04, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
I have addressed someof the prose, but (as I noted before) I think I'm a little too close to the references to convert all of them over effectively as of yet. New eyes from the DYK will provide a lot of that. Do you have other concerns that I can address befor ethe DYK is good to go? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 22:14, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your diligence, Jack Sebastian. I did a little work on the article. While some of the phrasing still seems like it should be reworked, I looked at a couple other articles - American Idiot and Dropkick Murphys, to be specific - and feel like the quotations and reviews are included in The Dead South in comparable ways. So I feel comfortable with the prose.
I would like to see a reference on the last paragraph in the lede, and on the first. I don't see any inline citations where the band members are listed, nor on the line, "Doyle, a noted solo and studio musician was hired to fill the vacancy left by Crawford." Can you please add inline citations for these? Then I think I'd be happy with the article. = paul2520 (talk) 03:57, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Update on my previous comments: this looks to me to be a blatant copyvio issue. Note the highlighting where Pearl Jam is mentioned. I don't feel comfortable giving the greenlight until you go through each of the comparisons via Earwig's copyvio detector and reword chunks that have been directly copied. = paul2520 (talk) 04:06, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Maybe I am mistaken, but they aren't copyvio if they are cited and in quotation marks, right? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 05:16, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Citations are mandatory, and anything copied directly needs quotation marks. I reworded another example of what appeared to be really close paraphrasing. Yes, we can quote people properly. But articles should not be pieces of reference copied and pasted.
Please address my earlier comments about lines without inline citations. And another line that escaped my notice was the line "In presenting the award, CIMA President Stuart...". = paul2520 (talk) 13:50, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
I've reworked some of the direct quotes into prose, but I'm having a little difficulty using Earwig. When I run an scan on the article, it isn't seeing the current (altered) version of the article. Am I doing something wrong? What's a "revision ID"? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 17:31, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
@Jack Sebastian: Are you using a fresh load of the tool?
You shouldn't need to worry about revision ID. For reference, Wikipedia:Revision id explains it. Essentially, each revision has a unique number value that identifies it. It's useful if you reference a Wikipedia article in another context, so you can cite the specific version at the time you read/cited it. = paul2520 (talk) 18:11, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, this has certainly been a learning process. I thought I had known how to write an article; clearly, I had either forgotten/never learned a lot about it. Add to the fact that article formatting has undergone a few updates over the past 7+ years, and I've found myself working my tail off. I really appreciate the effort you (and others) have expended on the article. I thank you.
Anyhoo, I've lowered the percentage to 28.1%. Could I trouble you to see what else might drop it lower? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 19:27, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
@Jack Sebastian: I applaud you persevering. I would say you started an article that you should be happy with.
I want to make sure we uphold high standards, especially since the DYK articles are linked on the front page of our very high traffic site.
To give more background, I was burned with my first DYK, which was pulled from the front page because of concerns with sourcing.
The article now clears everything for copyvio concerns in my opinion, and you did a good job working on that. I really think the three inline references are all it needs. This is the home stretch - I just think it's very important that we include citations since there currently aren't any where the band members are listed, when they changed, or for the line I mentioned above. = paul2520 (talk) 03:23, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
Explain what you mean via an example, Paul. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 05:57, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
@Jack Sebastian: example of what? = paul2520 (talk) 14:11, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
Nvm; I figured it out, I think. I've cited the band lineup and when the changeover in Bangoists (Banjoans? Banjoites?). If the article is good to go, I'd appreciate you noting such in the DYK nom. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 17:08, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

Hey...where did the Dead South DYK go? It appears to have varnished... - Jack Sebastian (talk) 21:50, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

@Jack Sebastian: The template is Template:Did you know nominations/The Dead South, and it should persist. I did approve it - so you can see it included at Template talk:Did you know/Approved. = paul2520 (talk) 22:04, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. It appeared to vanish, and I thought it had been bumped as stale or whatever. Thanks for pointing it out, Paul. :) - Jack Sebastian (talk) 22:28, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
Hey, Paul - is there supposed to be some sort of notification when the DYK appears? I've seen the article in the approved section, but it doesn't appear to be in the Queue. Has it already appearaed and there was no notification, or is something holding it up? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 22:05, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jack Sebastian: Yes, you will get a notification on your talk page the day it goes live. It looks like there's a bit of a backlog these days; I've been checking up on Did you know/Queue daily or so and haven't seen this one yet or the other one I recently got approved. But yes, I've been able to see what day/time the DYKs I worked on would show up. I can let you know when I see The Dead South, but feel free to check in on that page. = paul2520 (talk) 00:33, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm glad you contacted me about this. Unfortunately I can't seem to find whatever WNN thing it was I read last spring... Can't really remember why I didn't link it. Luckily since then a book was published Dec2017 to support the name of the producer, along with french cast. ScratchMarshall (talk) 20:19, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

@ScratchMarshall: Great! Can the other source be removed then? = paul2520 (talk) 20:32, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Just removed it now, did leave a note about it on the talk page in case someone manages to track it down in the future. This has me pretty perplexed as to what it was I had read. ScratchMarshall (talk) 21:43, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

@ScratchMarshall: I get it. "Link rot" is an unfortunate reality. I got in the practice of checking that pages are archived in The Wayback Machine when I add them to articles (just paste the URL to search; if it's not already archived, you can have the crawler save it). It's an extra step, but puts me at ease & means the citation will still be valid if that source's website goes down, etc. = paul2520 (talk) 21:47, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Yeah I'm surprised I didn't link the URL to begin with, at least then I'd have some clue as to what rotted. Some sites block archive.org indexing so I used archive.is for them now, but I don't remember if I had learned that last May ScratchMarshall (talk) 21:56, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

@ScratchMarshall: No worries - it happens. Yeah, I lean towards archive.org since they're an established non-profit. The details behind archive.is are a bit more fuzzy, but due to the way they archive, they get around some of the issues you mention. Of course, the more archives the merrier, right? = paul2520 (talk) 22:04, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Phillipe Cunningham

On 23 January 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Phillipe Cunningham, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Phillipe Cunningham is one of the first openly transgender people of color to be elected to public office in the United States? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Phillipe Cunningham. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Phillipe Cunningham), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Dear Paul, I'm not sure how to include Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arden Hilliard in the correct page of discussion; it has been put up for deletion, but I think it has the potential to survives. Thank you for any help you can provide. --Elisa.rolle (talk) 18:00, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Elisa.rolle. I see on Talk:Arden Hilliard, WikiProject LGBT studies is mentioned, but the article does not explicitly mention his gender or sexual identity. If that is relevant, I would post on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies. Hope this helps! = paul2520 (talk) 20:31, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
Hilliard was part of the Hypocrytes, and they were mostly gay, and his friends, Powell, Waugh, Betjeman, Acton, were all gays or bisexuals. Given that there is not indeed a biography about him, I cannot write on the article that he was gay or bisexual, but given his friends, it's most likely. Therefore not sure I should post it on that project...--Elisa.rolle (talk) 20:33, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
Elisa.rolle: that's fair. I see in the Hypocrites' Club article, "Some of the members of the club, like Brian Howard were gay, but most were not."
FWIW, I did weigh-in on the AfD. I was originally going to stay out, but another editor's points convinced me. = paul2520 (talk) 21:49, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
I actually found a source stating he was gay. I'm making the article more detailed. Elisa.rolle (talk) 21:54, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Paul2520, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Kehinde Wiley Artistic Motifs Edit

@Paul2520:

Information iconHi Paul, I'm responding to your reversion of an edit I made to Kehinde Wiley which you described as vandalism. This was a good faith edit on my part and I had no intention of vandalizing the article or including any false information. I simply wanted to mention a noteworthy motif of Wiley's work. What section of the article do you think would be best for this inclusion?

I'd be happy to include a credible source--here are a few that mention this motif: https://smarthistory.org/kehinde-wiley-napoleon-leading-the-army-over-the-alps/ https://qz.com/375262/the-painter-who-remixes-classical-european-art-with-black-urban-youth/ http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/05/arts/design/05stud.html

Thanks for reaching out. I'm glad to hear this was in good faith - and appreciate you finding links. My two thoughts are: (1) can we really use the words "often" and "motif" if this is not confirmed by the sources? and (2) the placement of your edits was inappropriate because the Washington Post source on that line doesn't mention anything about that.
I really appreciate you following-up on this. How about we instead write a new sentence (i.e., after the existing sentence), citing all three of those sources. What about something like, "Wiley has used a sperm motif as symbolic of masculinity and gender." = paul2520 (talk) 16:09, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
I think it's still appropriate to use "motif," but perhaps not "often." My thinking is, a motif typically refers to a distinctive feature of an artistic composition. I think the sperm symbolism Wiley uses is definitely distinctive and indicative of his work.
I've included the edit worded as you suggested. I think that's good wording and remains more NPOV than my original edit. I made sure to cite all three sources we discussed. Thanks for the help.--216.17.250.140 (talk) 16:49, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! I just left a note on your talk page, extolling the benefits of creating an account, and providing some further links. Once again, I appreciate your patience and the fact that you found reliable sources to back-up the content. It would be great to have more contributions like this from you. Let me know if I can assist in the future. = paul2520 (talk) 17:15, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your help on this. I only edit rarely, so I've never made an account before. I'm finding I have more free time lately, so I might make an account soon to edit a little more (probably mostly history and math articles). All the best! --216.17.250.140 (talk) 17:22, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Paul for adding the photo of E. Jane Gay to the article...I will look and see if any of her photos are public domain, and will add them. Nomination for a "Did you know?" Wow-that would be cool! Thanks so much! RachelWex 22:49, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

@RachelWex: sounds good - I would guess based on the dates she lived & what I know of the copyright rules, there would be some photos in the public domain by now. The MIA folks might be able to help, too.
I can wait a couple days before nominating the article. It just has to be nominated within seven days of creation. Meanwhile, if you can spare the time & would prefer to nominate it yourself, let me know if you need any help. = paul2520 (talk) 23:12, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

teardrop tattoo edit

Hi Paul,

You edited the word 'his' to 'their' in the teardrop tattoo article however if you look at the reference, it states:

Homosexuality is also prevalent, as is rape of prisoners. In a bizarre practice, the victim of rape is tattooed with a tear drop below the eye by the offending party and his accomplices.

It is usually one person that is doing the tattooing and in a male prison it will be a he, therefore it will be 'his' accomplices. The accomplices of course would be holding down the prisoner being tattooed, not doing the tattooing; so they will not have accomplices hence it is 'his' not 'their' accomplices. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.148.82.40 (talk) 04:11, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out. I had switched "his" to a singular they with the thought that this might not just be perpetrated by males. But you're right, the reference uses "his".
That said, I noticed the text was identical to the cited reference, which would be against our policy on copyright violations. So I changed the wording a bit, in a way that still gets the point across. = paul2520 (talk) 18:30, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Minol Araki. New Page Review Newsletter No.10

Hello Paul2520, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

  • Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

  • While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.

News

  • The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Paul2520, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:12, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello Paul2520, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. @Paul2520: based on https://tools.wmflabs.org/dykstats/count.php?article=Harold+Spitznagel&date=20180815&timeslot=AM the article received 1800 new views, and I saw 5 new edits. Thanks again! Runner1928 (talk) 02:11, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Growth team updates #1

Welcome to the first newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth Team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects. We will be starting with Wikipedias, but we hope these changes will benefit every community.

8 ideas we consider: tell us what you think about them!

We are considering new features to build, that could retain new editors in mid-size Wikipedias. We will be testing new ideas in Czech and Korean Wikipedias, and then we'll talk to more communities (yours!) about adopting the ideas that work well.

We have posted the 8 ideas we are considering. We would really appreciate your thoughts and the thoughts from your community. Please share the ideas, and tell us what do you and your community think of those ideas before September 9.

Share your experiences with newcomers

We want to hear about what is working and what is not working for new contributors in your wiki. We also want to hear any reactions, questions, or opinions on our work. Please post on the team’s talk page, in any language!

You can visit our team page to find out why our team was formed and how we are thinking about new editors, and our project page for detailed updates on the first project we'll work on.
