Re: Politicians and judges

Hello. Your edit to Wikipedia:Notability (people) is appreciated, but the header change broke several shortcut redirects. I fixed WP:POLITICIAN, WP:POLITICIANS, and WP:NPOL. Any other breakage is on you. Cheers. • Gene93k (talk) 17:28, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

@Gene93k: Ouch, sorry about that, I obviously didn't think it through carefully enough. I also wanted to add a shortcut WP:JUDGE, but then discovered that it's already in use as a redirect to a failed notability proposal for law. So I've raised that one as Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion#Wikipedia:JUDGE rather than make any rash changes myself. Looks like I should have suggested the section heading change on the talk page and left it to someone who knew what they were doing to make the change. PamD 17:31, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
@Gene93k: I've now added Politicians: am I right in thinking that this should solve the problem if there are any more incoming links - and that it's what I should have done in the first place? PamD 17:36, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Re: Stub tags

Hello, thanks for your message and removal of unneeded stub tag. Someone added the first tag in a meantime, when I was reviewing the page. Because of that I didn't realise it is already present (I didn't refresh). Sorry about that. Tymon.r Do you have any questions? 22:15, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

@Tymon.r: - Ah yes, I can see how that happened! I don't check the timing before sending messages like that one, as it's so common for enthusiastic page curators to slam on inappropriate stub tags. Something to look out for - I'm looking at the page history to see who added it, so will now try to remember to look and see whether the addition of the first stub tag was at virtually the same time. Thanks. PamD 10:04, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

Little Yellow Duck Project:

Hi! Thanks for finding different projects for the page after I deleted it from the genetics project. Good luck, DennisPietras (talk) 03:10, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

@DennisPietras: Hi - I've no idea why anyone labelled Little Yellow Duck Project genetics, except perhaps on the basis that it raises awareness of Cystic Fibrosis which is a hereditary illness. Though actually organ donation is the main aim for awareness! Glad I could find something more relevant. It's a splendid little project. (Which reminds me that I've got a couple of half-knitted ducks somewhere...). PamD 08:04, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

@Leprof 7272: Thanks, on both counts. I treat each month's Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red topic or two as a personal challenge, and enjoy editing way outside my areas of knowledge or interest but still creating well-sourced stubs for notable redlinked people! The rest of my contributions are a real mixed bag - I'm so glad that I've kept a record, from the outset, of why I created each article, as I sometimes come across something I started off and have no recollection of it till I check my list. New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello PamD,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 805 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

RE: Nomination of Oswaldo González for deletion

Good evening,

It was myself who inserted the fast delete (or whatever) in the article.

I hope any person will NOT create an article about me in Wikipedia. I do not want to make part of this salade-pedia, why:

You know, in Wikipedia it is mixed articles like for example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornhub

And

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Stravinsky

Sorry, your Wikipedia (Salad-pedia) is not suitable for honorable people.

I hope you will understand.

French Island

In wikipedia's guidelines, I found this: 1. And in that, I found this: Named natural features are often notable, provided information beyond statistics and coordinates is known to exist. This includes mountains, lakes, streams, islands, etc. And there is, about the eagles. I agree that it should be fleshed out more, and I am on that right now. Adieu, Sea Captain Cormac 21:19, 14 February 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cormac Nocton (talkcontribs)

@Cormac Nocton: But you haven't shown us that any information about eagles, or private ownership for that matter, is "known to exist". You have produced 3 refs which show that the island exists, but they don't seem to tell us any more. Information which you personally "know" is not valid content for the encyclopedia unless you can cite reliable independent sources for it. And please use the Wikipedia convention of ~~~~, or the "sign" button, to sign using your editor name. Thanks. PamD 22:07, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do. And I thought I did use the sign button, sorry. Sea Captain Cormac 13:01, 15 February 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cormac Nocton (talkcontribs)

@Cormac Nocton: I think I now see what's happening: you have created a "Cusotm Signature" which doesn't include a link to your user page or talk page. To my surprise I can't see that this is explicitly required by WP:SIGNATURES, though it does say "A customised signature should make it easy to identify the username, to visit the user's talk-page, and preferably user page.", and the way to make it Weasy ... to visit the user's talk-page" is to make a link. Look around and you will see that every editor's signature includes such a link. Please amend your signature to include a link. If you don't, even the system's software thinks you haven't signed a post and adds an "autosigned" signature, as you can see above. Thanks. PamD 14:13, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
@Cormac Nocton: It's been pointed out to me that WP:SIGLINK, within WP:SIGNATURES, says Signatures must include at least one direct internal link to your user page, user talk page, or contributions page; this allows other editors easy access to your talk page and contributions log. The lack of such a link is widely viewed as obstructive. So please do add a link to your signature. Thanks. PamD 14:49, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
PamD is correct. The problem above is showing up because bots don't recognize a signature if it doesn't such a link. If you're having any trouble correcting your sig, feel free to drop a note on my talk page. Cheers —DoRD (talk) 15:06, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for your message and the improvements you've already made. I'll try and clarify the other references, & I'll try and (first find out what an Afd is!) comment in the AfD discussion. Thanks for your help. All the best, Luciferfan (talk) 19:20, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

@Luciferfan: Sorry about the jargon: AfD = Articles for Deletion - there's a linkto Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dennis Johnson (composer) in the message which was left on your talk page about the deletion nomination! PamD 19:39, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for the clarification of 'AfD discussion'. I just tried putting in the missing URls but have got into a terrible mess with formatting, so please if you'd be willing and have time to help, here are the relevant URls. Ref 1. pitchfork.com review http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20814-as-if-to-each-other/ Ref 2. Dennis Johnson: Maths, Mars landings and minimalism http://www.soundart.zone/2016/05/19/dennis-johnson-maths-mars-landings-and-minimalism/ Ref 4. R. Andrew Lee rewrites the history books with November. https://www.timeout.com/newyork/classical/r-andrew-lee-rewrites-the-history-books-with-november/ Ref 6. same as 2 thanks again, and not to worry if you don't have time to do it, sorry for my incompetence. All the best, Luciferfan (talk) 20:02, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

OK, I've fixed those refs, but you really should have a go at doing them yourself next time - I see various people have left notes on your talk page to help with creating references. As I said, if it's a website, then the basic minimum is to provide the full URL of the page, not just the home page of the site. And if you're using a reference more than once, you should give it a name and then re-cite it - look and see how I did it here. It's not difficult when you've learned how to do it. And it increases the chance of survival of your work - as you can see from the AfD discussion, the article was initially criticised, and nominated, because it wasn't possible to see what the references were. And now that we've got them as being from Wire and Time Out, it looks a whole lot better. (The Soundart ref said, at the bottom, that it was from Wire, so I chased that up and then cited it from there rather than from the copy at Soundart). There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia, but it's an interesting journey - have fun! PamD 21:42, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
Another little point: it's always helpful if you could link to any article you're discussing on a talk page (as I request in the green box at the top of this one!): makes it easier both for the person you're addressing, and for any "talk page watchers" of theirs, to get straight to the article under discussion. Thanks. PamD 21:42, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello, I see all of the references on the Dennis Johnson page have been updated beautifully. Thank you very much. Best wishes, Luciferfan (talk) 11:06, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

@Luciferfan: Glad to be able to help - but you ought to take a deep breath, have a look at the documentation, and have a go yourself next time! Just another point - when a conversation is really all a to-and-fro on one topic, like this, it's best to keep it under just the one section heading rather than splitting it into 3 sections: just keeps the talk page more manageable. In fact I'll tidy it up myself, as it's my talk page! Happy editing. PamD 11:13, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
And another little point: I don't know whether you've noticed, but lines you've typed as separate lines, like "Hello", all get run together into a single line - unless you put two new lines after each line, which will split them. Just another thing to learn! Best wishes PamD 11:15, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Paticipation in AFD....

Can you take a kind look and participate in the AFD discussion for a set of articles, created by Archeologo (Museo Galileo) that I have AFD-ed. May-be some of them are salvageable. For the links to the discussions, kindly check his talk page.Cheers!Winged Blades Godric 08:10, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

@Blades of Godric: Sorry, but I can't summon the enthusiasm to fix any more, having done quite a lot on a couple of them last night, but see my post at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_History_of_Science#Museo_Galileo_stubs where I've tried to raise some support. Many of the articles are probably salvageable, with holdings in other major collections and biographical info there - what a pity that this editor was let loose to create such a mass of silly stubs about the particular items in the one museum's collection, without any thought as to how they fitted into an international encyclopedia. The Envale created articles

See Special:Contributions/Envale

Hello PamD,

I just wanted to check with you to see if it is still okay to edit and work on the Envale articles. I read the complaint letter on the main board thing and saw where the supervisors had blocked him. I do not want to get in trouble for working on them. I mostly have just been filling the references and adding cats and stuff. I am trying to only improve the articles. Thank you. Antonioatrylia (talk) 09:25, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

@Antonioatrylia: I've got no official status here, not an admin, just an ordinary (long-standing) editor. I think that as long as the topic of an article is undoubtedly Notable, we should all carry on improving them - I think I saw a suggestion somewhere that they should all be moved to "Draft", but not that they should all be deleted.
I can't see a pattern in the topics Envale creates - living and dead, scattered around continents and occupations - I wonder what motivates them? (Me, I keep a note on my user page of why I create each article, not least for my own reference when I come across something five years on and wonder what drew me to create it!)
My pet hates about Envale's articles are the opaque references, abuse of "Official website", lists of books without any details (even though they seem to be using library catalogues as their sources, so have the info in front of them as they type!). But they also need generally fleshing out. You've been doing great work - keep on with it. It's a pity that the community didn't get its act together sooner after this started on 10 Jan, but we were all trying to be helpful to a newbie who just wouldn't take any advice. Sad waste of energy - if only they'd created a quarter of the articles to a reasonable standard. Another thing that occurs is that many of their creations have 3 names, and we need to check whether there's a duplicate article (aargh) or missing redirect/dab entry/hatnote for the 2-name version which people would expect to find in WP. Or move the articles if we think the common name is just the forename-surname pair. Ah well, I might do a blitz on that. I'll do a bit more work on Erika too, having already added the mineral named for her. Happy Editing! PamD 09:41, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
@Antonioatrylia: Well, A couple of hours later, I've now created redirects, hatnotes, dab page entries, as needed from all the likely variations of Envale's article creations which have more than just a Firstname-Surname title. Let's hope none of them now get deleted. I upgraded the odd article slightly en route but on the whole stuck to this one project. And now I really need to get on with Real Life. PamD 12:07, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
Thank you PamD! Antonioatrylia (talk) 12:20, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Mary Godfrey help

Hi PamD: Thanks for your cross-references and clean-up of my stubby article (Mary Godfrey)! I have actually been a casual Wikipedia editor for years, but I don't often create new pages or interact with other users on talk pages. We were hosting an Art+Feminism event at my library, and I was sort of facilitating it (although I'm maybe not qualified) because nobody else here had any Wiki experience. I didn't know about the banner template, so I'm going to add that now. Thanks again! K.Grey (talk) 20:58, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

As above! Thanks, Black Kite (talk) 10:56, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

@Black Kite: Thanks. Were there any useful sources mentioned on the talk page? I had a feeling I'd found a few but can't see them in my own sandbox, possibly I didn't note them down! PamD 11:00, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: But notability is not temporary - if it was featuring in tourist guidebooks etc in its heyday, then it's notable. This article was created after a very longwinded AfD on its founder, and seemed to be the best outcome (there are incoming redirects from umpteen versions of Leo Fowler's name). Hi PamD,

I was editing some new articles tonight, and I ran across a few that looked vaguely familiar. I will let you draw your own conclusions. Maybe I am seeing things. It is late. Look here to see list of new ones. [2] If nothing looks familiar then just disregard my note. Thanks. Antonioatrylia (talk) 08:44, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

@Antonioatrylia: I agree that the editing style is remarkably similar - and had you noticed that Envale has been found to be a sockpuppet of Novonium themselves? Interesting. I've raised it at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Novonium. PamD 15:11, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
No, missed that! But at least this new account does have more than just the mini-stubs. But he sure loves those brackets on the references! Antonioatrylia (talk) 15:58, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
@Antoniostylia: Now blocked - see User:Odensalt. If you spot any more articles with the usual characteristics, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Novonium is the place to go - easiest doing it via Twinkle, not quite sure about the procedure otherwise! Well spotted. PamD 17:54, 20 March 2017 (UTC) @Antonioatrylia: - repinging after typo! PamD 18:06, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

@Antonioatrylia: Just found Roy Worvill while stub-sorting, and have reported Vinelet at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Novonium. PamD 15:10, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

@Antonioatrylia: I think that as each Sock Puppet is discovered, we should nominate their work for speedy deletion G5 to deny this editor the pleasure of seeing their articles remaining in the encyclopedia. I've nominated Edwin Porter Arrowsmith and will go through the rest of Odensalt's stuff, checking that no-one else has made substantial edits. PamD 15:25, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

@PamD, I know that you are most probably correct about we should do as in G5ing articles by this socky editor. I have really lost all faith in wikipedia, but I will support your learned decisions as best I can. Thanks for the note. Antonioatrylia (talk) 17:00, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Ann Limb

Hello,

Would be great to get your guidance on making my own edits to an article that you have recently edited.

I'm trying to update the page for Ann Limb, using properly reference sources, but you reverted it saying it was unsourced.

Would be great to understand how I should approach these changes differently to make sure they meet the standards required.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks Tom — Preceding unsigned comment added by TomMLillywhite (talkcontribs) 15:44, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

  • @TomMlillywhite: I did wonder whether the anonymous IP editor and yourself were the same editor. You did not cite any sources in what you contributed, and you removed all the existing, sourced, content. That's not the way to go about improving a Wikipedia article. Articles are built collectively, different editors adding to the existing content - unless there is a major problem with the existing content (copyright violation, personal attacks etc). You should not just arrive with your own set of content and over-write what other editors have already contributed. What you added read very much like Limb's personal CV. Perhaps you work with her or for her, or have a close connection such as family or friendship? In which case please read WP:COI about "Conflict of Interest". If you are editing as part of any paid work, please in particular read the section about "Paid editing".
All content in Wikipedia should be sourced to Independent Reliable Sources. This is even more important for articles about living people (often referred to as "BLP" - Biographies of Living People", where the absence of reliable sources is grounds for deletion of an article. Your version would have avoided this, just, because it listed her website as an "External link". Wikipedia articles need references, and they need links to other Wikipedia articles.
Just expand the article bit by bit, but keeping it objective. Your version seemed to go into excessive (completely unsourced) detail about her childhood philanthropy etc. Add hard facts, and give sources. Happy Editing! PamD 16:05, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
And (a) please sign all comments on talk pages (use ~~~~ or the "sign" button), (b) remember to log in every time you edit, rather than editing as a mix of IP and named editor, and (c) you'd do well to put a bit of content onto your "User page" at User:TomMLillywhite - red linked editors' names often, though not always, show inexperienced editors. PamD 16:05, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
@TomMLillywhite: - just noticed that I misspelled your editor name last time so the "ping" won't have worked - sorry about that. Re-pinging, to alert you to the above. Another good reason to create a user page - the incorrect version showed red, which I "knew" was because you don't have a user page! PamD 15:25, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [3]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [4]

Other changes:

  • You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [5]
  • The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [6]
  • The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the "hamburger" icon) for quicker access. [7] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [8]
  • You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [9]
  • Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [10]
  • The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [11]
  • A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [12]
  • There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [13]

Future changes

  • The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [14]
  • The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. [15]
  • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [16]

Right :) Thank you for replacing the bio delete flag. That was my screw-up; I deleted a bit more than the flag I meant, and didn't know how to replace it. Good looking out... best, John -veryproicelandic- Veryproicelandic (talk) 07:35, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
@Veryproicelandic: Easiest way is to look at "History", highlight the "diff" you've just done, and click on "undo". That's what I did with your edit, then went back and re-added the one link whioch I thought appropriate. PamD 07:37, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi PamD.
Point taken, and thank you for your patience. I'll see if I can whip it up to something more than re-stating what is on the list.
From memory, I saw a picture of an interesting Listed Building that didn't have an article, and thought "oh, it doesn't have an article" and then went back to to speedy deletion list without putting any effort to improving it.
There are some other UK micro-stubs I've started that could do with your expertise, if you are so inclined and have the time.
Thanks again! Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 09:02, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

On Overlinking

Hi, Pam. As something of an "angel" on here, I do some of the work others seem not to want to do :) One of those things seems to be adding wikilinks.

As to the business of linking too few or too many items, I submit too many is better than too few or none. In addition, I saw fewer than 50 articles in English Wiki flagged for too many links- most of those had repetitive tags. If discreet, distinct, relevant or material (to even a small degree) concepts are linked in an article, and not repetitively, I've found it's quite difficult to overlink. Pointing to about anything that could elucidate things for a reader- how is that at all bad? They can ignore all links if they so choose, and reading a few more words in blue text ;) never killed anyone. Or only a couple of people :p If a topic has even a small bit of relevance to the main page, I've found myself clicking sometimes just to get perspective on the linked matter.

I can see your point about perhaps not linking, say, "meter (measurement)" on a page about a tall mountain, or "chair" on the page of the Holy See. However, things about where, when, and so forth relative to an article can have unforeseen importance to a given reader. "United States" and other major concepts are linked everywhere, by everyone, and serve as portals about a relevant concept. That type of geographic link, I propose, is quite necessary and desirable.

I'll look at some of the more minor links before I add them, but again, far better to err on the side of providing a convenient click mechanism (which is all it is) for a secondary topic than going all spartan. Every word on a page, especially if it involves an idea (noun) or action (verb[al]), is going to be important to someone at some time.

Thanks for your input. By the way, are you a Wikipedia staff member? :) Veryproicelandic (talk) 03:25, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

@Veryproicelandic: Thanks for your work on the encyclopedia - a lot of us have our own little niches, like adding links or sorting stubs. If you disagree with the stated policy of the Manual of Style, perhaps you should open a discussion about it. Meanwhile, don't be surprised if people unlink some of your links. No, I'm not a WP staff member, just an ordinary editor.
I see from your talk page that you've quite often linked to disambiguation pages. Do you know about the wonderful gadget you can use which shows links to dab pages in orange, so that it's easier to spot them and fix the problem? Go to "Preferences", "Gadgets" and look near the end of the "Appearance" section. It's very useful. It's always good practice to check every link you make, anyway, to avoid linking to either a dab page or an article which isn't the one you want because of a surprising choice of "Primary topic". Happy Editing. PamD 07:02, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

I use Dab Solver whenever possible today- on a weekly basis, i.e. I agree, disamb pages are a pain to get directed to. I might go back and look at some of my notices from times past for those.

As to unlinking stuff, hey, I'm not gonna claim I know the Style Manual end to end. If someone thinks I overlinked, let them work with it. My job as I assign it to myself is to get the links in there for review so I can remove the deadend flag and let the next editor have his turn. That's all. If I fix a link or edit for style, call me even more generous :) I don't keep up with the progress of pages I edit. Most of the ones with deadends aren't top-flight matter, anyhow. Indian towns, sports in small countries, less-known poets, that kind of thing. I just want them to look spiffy, too :) Veryproicelandic (talk) 08:31, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

(Talk page stalker) Overlinked articles are very annoying to read. Awien (talk) 12:35, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Thornbird

I did my own searching for the source of this legend. I also found nothing that pre-dates the book. I found several blogs asking about the source of the legend and no good answers. One story often repeated is that it is an "old Celtic" legend, but I couldn't find anything to substantiate that. Some say the source is the book: [17]. Our article on the book, which is very poorly referenced, implies the book is named after the legend. But this could just be a misconception. But since there are no shortage of contemporary references to the legend, I feel we should somehow cover it. What do you think of redirects of "Thornbird myth" and "Thornbird legend" to The Thorn Birds where it talks about the legend. It is documented here: [18], but I'm not sure how we could make use of this as a reference. MB 02:43, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

@MB: Yes, we need something, not sure what - might come back to it sometime unless you beat me to it! PamD 09:31, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
@MB: Have had a go - see The_Thorn_Birds#Thornbird_myth. PamD 09:52, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Sayyid Ahmad ibn ‘Abdur-Rahman As-Saqqaf has been redirected to Alsagoff_Family#Syed_Ahmad_ibn_.E2.80.98Abdur-Rahman, so can we keep it like that, and get rid of those big signs, now? Leo1pard (talk) 05:36, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

We need to let the AfD run its course - see WP:EDITATAFD. But I agree that that redirect would be a good outcome. Thanks. PamD 07:16, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Thomas Samuel

Hi Pam D. This is Mr.Thomas Samuel's student Syam T, adding the contents on behalf of him using all the resources and materials given to me by him.Yes he is also there near when I add the contents. Since I'm new to Wikipedia,I had been editing it many time and sometime by mistake I use the contents directly without editing. I'm very particular that he been credited for his work as this is not a simple logo or mark, rather its a international mark similar to the CE and FCC mark which is compulsory on all electronics to be sold or used in India.Though the name for the logo creator has not come in any media, but I have sent you the link of the copy of the letter from the organisation stating his name as the creator of the logo.I feel its a credit to our faculty to bring his name and the achievement on Wikipedia and should be known by everyone. Its sad that once or twice he tried to upload and as he too was not sure how to work in Wikipedia ,the contents all were deleted.I request you to pls let the content remain.Thank you. Syamt29 (talk) 07:39, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

@Syamt29: Please read WP:COI about "Conflict of Interest" - as his student you should not be writing his article. If he is "Notable" in Wikipedia terms, someone else will write an article about him. You need to find Reliable sources where he is discussed in independent reliable published sources - not just a private letter to him from an organisation. If the logo is so important, create an article about it first and then there would be scope to mention Mr Samuel's contribution to designing it. PamD 07:52, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply PamD,as mentioned I'll try to create an article first.Syamt29 (talk) 08:11, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

revision of wikipedia and wikispecies entries for Tyson R. Roberts

Dear Pam,

I have recently made substantial changes to both entries. This was done partly to correct a number of errors. For example, a number of patronyms named "robertsi" are named for other people. I have eliminated them.
Kindly note that 100% of the changes, new entries, etc I have made, such as literature citations, are strictly factual. There is nothing that could possibly be regarded as conflict of interest.
This message is being send because of a notice about the changes I have made warning that they might be summarily rejected. So far this has not happened. I hope that I do not have anything to worry about, since it cost me a lot of time and effort to edit these entries.
I anticipate adding a few more names to the list of genera named by me, and perhaps many more species named by me. Otherwise I am not plannkng additional changes.
A word from you indicating everything is in order would be appreciated.
       Kindly reply to <tysonregalecus@gmail.com>

  • @Tyson R. Roberts: No, I'm sorry but I'm not going to get involved in email correspondence. The normal way to discuss Wikipedia editing is on article talk pages or user talk pages. Wikipedia has firm policies about "Conflict of interest", which include that you should not edit the article about yourself. If there is information you think should be added to it, please comment on the talk page, giving adequate references to independent reliable published sources. PamD 18:14, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

Proper procedure regarding articles by blocked accounts

Greetings. On NPP, we come across articles created by blocked users all the time. Recently, I came upon an article by user:Yahadzija, Željezno Polje. The article, while not having any good sourcing available online, does have articles on other wikis which are sourced, so the village exists, so I tagged it as a stub and marked it reviewed. However, I noticed in your SPI on Novonium, that there might be a policy that regardless of the notability of the article, if an editor has been blocked, then the article might be deleted regardless. What is the proper procedure?

The reason I'm asking is that in NPP, one of the tactics I use to reduce the backlog is when I find an editor who seems to know what they are doing, I check for other articles they've done which need reviewing, then review those as well. Yahadzija has several other articles to be reviewed, many of them of this village type, which are easy to check notability. Thanks for any guidance. Onel5969 TT me 13:47, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

@Onel5969: I think the circumstances are different. The Novonium articles under discussion were apparently created by a blocked editor, while they were blocked, using sockpuppets, and so should be deleted (if the sockpuppetry is confirmed). Željezno Polje was created on 12 January 2017, but user:Yahadzija's first block wasn't until May 2017, so there's no problem with that article. It seems that Yahadzija is now a sockpuppeteer, so if there were any articles created by User:Falcon Bos while Yahadzija was blocked, those would be eligible to be speedy deleted G5 as having been created by a blocked user - but there aren't any. Well, that's my understanding, anyway. Hope that helps! PamD 21:52, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Yes, it does. Thanks! Onel5969 TT me 23:14, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

SPI report format

Not 100% sure about this but I think you are supposed to put all the editors from the same day in one report ... not new cases for each as [19][20] etc. - Bri (talk) 22:52, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

@Bri: Thanks.I don't know how to do an SPI report except by using Twinkle, which does them separately. I'm currently searching on "his notable books", picking up more and more socks of same editor. Should I try to edit the SPI page? Actually, it's bedtime so I'm going to stop at this point. Will see what's happened in the morning. PamD 22:55, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
I'll clean it up and you can see ... simple really, just use a separate bullet point for each new editor in the same (day) report. - Bri (talk) 22:57, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
@Bri: Thanks - I've just got one more found just now, then finishing for today. PamD 22:58, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
Maybe you noticed, all the accounts were blocked. Good work on the filing. - Bri (talk) 00:33, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Olivia Wardell

Hi PamD. I've just replaced your prod of Olivia Wardell with a BLP prod. As Wardell is almost certainly still living, a BLP prod is more appropriate. It also has stricter conditions for its removal (at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article), so isn't so easy to dismiss as a normal prod. This is because of our WP:BLP policy, which sets stricter standards for sourcing and content when the subject is a living person.

I hope that all makes sense to you, and that you'll make use of BLP prod (WP:Twinkle makes that easy) in your future patrolling. If you don't understand any of it, please feel free to ask me on my talk page, and I'll do my best to help. Regards --RexxS (talk) 16:48, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

  • @RexxS: I know about BLP prods: I didn't use it here because the article has a source, albeit not a reliable one - the Twitter feed confirms that someone of that name exists, and as I understand it that's enough to make the article ineligible for BLP prod. Although a reliable source is needed for removing a BLP Prod, any source which confirms any information in the article is sufficient to stop a BLP Prod being placed. But we'll see what happens when an admin comes around. PamD 16:54, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
    • I see that, Pam, and apologies for assuming you weren't already aware. First, the BLP prod specifically insists on the editor removing the prod supplying a reliable source (clearly not Twitter). Next, the question of seeing "no sources" in order to add a BLP prod is a little more complex: our policy asks us to Make sure the article contains no sources in any form which support any statements made about the person and when I looked on the Twitter feed, I couldn't find a single thing that supported either of the two statements Olivia Wardell is a British model or who was announced as the winner of the eleventh cycle of Britain's Next Top Model in May 2017. Of course, it's possible that something useful had scrolled off the Twitter page, but that's another reason why Twitter just isn't usable for sourcing. in any case, if the article is to survive, it's going to need reliable sourcing and the BLP prod is possibly the kindest way of encouraging better sourcing, as WP:REFUND is easy to request after a prod, once decent sources have been found. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 17:20, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
      • @RexxS: Well, I'd have thought that the statement "Britains Next Top Model Queen" on her Twitter page supports "Olivia Wardell is a British model". I think it's daft that unreliable sources (including IMDb) are enough to prevent a BLP Prod from being added, but it's my understanding of our current rules. It'll be interesting to see what a deleting admin makes of this one. PamD 17:27, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
        • It is daft, but when we introduced BLP prod, there were concerns it would be over-used, so that's what we got. I must admit I missed her self-description while scanning the actual feed. Mind you, if we are prepared to accept that as a "source", here's a good page: http://www.metropolis2.co.uk/demo/rex.htm for someone to use as a source for a biography-of-a-living-dinosaur (BLD) . --RexxS (talk) 17:41, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
          • @RexxS: I see it's been dePRODded by someone who has added a Reliable Source anyway. PamD 07:29, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
            • If they think OK magazine has "a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy", they're living on a different planet from me. I'll send it to AfD as BLPIE, but I expect the fan-boyz to rescue it. --RexxS (talk) 09:39, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

I wasn't sure whether OK! is considered reliable. I thought someone once said it was, but perhaps I remembered incorrectly. However I believe the article I cited is reliable because it shows footage taken from the programme of Wardell winning the competition and therefore verifies the information. In my opinion, a better way to determine whether a Top Model winner meets WP:ANYBIO would be a centralised discussion (which might also work for determining when it is and isn't appropriate to use BLPPROD, provided that hasn't already been done to death). Linguist111 12:21, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

I would have thought that the winner of any significant award or honour would have attracted at least a little bit of notice in a respectable newspaper. I see the Daily Mail reported it, but we all know how the DM is viewed. As for OK!, well, a source's reliability depends on context, so you're probably right that it's sufficient to support the statement that she won. I doubt that even OK! can get that wrong. What I'm not not seeing, of course, is any in-depth coverage by good quality sources - the kind of coverage that tells us more than we can already glean from looking at Britain's Next Top Model #Cycles, which is why BLP1E has to be seriously considered as grounds for a redirect.
Of course, if Wardell goes on to do something else noteworthy, and it shows up in decent sources, then I'd have no reservations about supporting a separate article on her. Incidentally, we have articles on 9 of the 11 winners, most of whom have no other claim to notability than BNTM, and whose articles are woefully referenced. Contrast that with Countdown – possibly the longest running TV game show in the UK, which has over 6,500 episodes over 75 series – where we have articles on just 4 of the winners, 2 of whom went on achieve further notability as series producers. I really don't think we do our readers any service by producing a stub bio of every winning contestant of every TV game show, but I assume I'm in a minority in thinking that. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 19:44, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

You do know that you shouldn't use the prod process on pages that have been through AFD don't you? Anyway, I've speedy deleted it as a G4. But if G4 did not apply, it would have to go back to AFD to have it deleted. SpinningSpark 11:52, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Back in 2016, you WP:REDIRECT-ed Taryn Brumfitt to her film Embrace (film). I have re-started the article with references that I think may go to some way to establish her notability outside of that film. I would really appreciate your thoughts about this.
Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 11:12, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

@Shirt58: Nice start: I've expanded it a bit and added a couple more refs. PamD 16:50, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Dear Pam, Thank you so very much for your help with this submission. My lack of expertise was quite getting to me! I'll try and get my head round all you say, in due course. I don't know enough to understand all your hints. I'm afraid I don't know how "disambiguation" is used on Wikipedia. But bless you for stepping in. Gratefully - Rogersansom (talk) 09:59, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

@Rogersansom: "Disambiguation" is sorting out which of the several things called "The Circle" etc you are heading for. If you click on the link The Circle you get to a page with choices. Choose one, and edit your link so it points to it. Perhaps you want The Circle (play) (Somerset Maughan play no-one's yet made an article about). If so, change your link so it looks like this: The Circle. That means "Show the words "The Circle" but link to the play". There's a short cut called "The Pipe Trick": enter the link as The Circle (play) (note the vertical line, the "pipe"), and it will convert automatically to The Circle (also works if the text you want to lose is separated by a comma, as in village name articles like Silverdale, Lancashire etc). Hope that helps a bit! PamD 10:09, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Pam - Bless you for your kindness! Over a number of years of very occasionally creating articles, I have been blundering in the dark. Thank heaven there's only a handful of them, and I have just disambiguated all links I could find on them, after "the penny dropped". I THINK I did it right. I hadn't actually seen your reply until I began to write this, but what I did seemed to work. Of course "ambiguities" varied from the not-terribly-grave-but-corrected-anyway, like having strictly speaking said (by linking) that a subject played the play of "Macbeth" instead of the part of Macbeth - to the comic, involving Noel Coward's "Still Life", which linked to ... yes, you can guess, flower pictures etc. I have also done a lot on Gordon Griffin. My head is now spinning, and I shall sign off. I'll read properly your valued advice on the right way to do it when I'm fresher and can take in more. Thank you SO much. Rogersansom (talk) 19:01, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

hirugao

Hi Pam D. I've added a bit more information about this film. This is a legitimate film, with known actors that saw a box office release in Japan, so it would be good for notability. I've added a bit more of a plotline, IMDB links, and a movie review from Japan times. It was also included in a film Festivel in Italy. Cheers~ Deathlibrarian (talk) 11:46, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

My two recent articles are my original artwork.

Dear Editor, thank you for your concerns about the deleted articles. Order of Missionaries of Mercy and LA Congregation De L'eglise Catholique are both my original artwork. So please feel free to proceed with the formal editing and indexing of the article into the wikipedia. Bishop Seraphim. Bishopseraphim (talk) 11:59, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

@Bishopseraphim: I am not sure that you understand the basis on which Wikipedia is built. The encyclopedia cannot accept information which is not supported by reliable published sources. Please read the information to which other editors have already referred you. Thanks. By the way, in English "artwork" means paintings, drawings etc, not written work: if English is not your first language you might do better to edit a Wikipedia in a language you know better. PamD 17:39, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Thank you PamD

Dear Editor, whilst I agree that English isn't my first language, but I do understand what artwork means in English language.

The two articles I referred to were prepared by me and I have also edited them using my own words. So if you can help to work on them to improve its contents for publishing that would be much appreciated ; than trying to make fuss out of nothing. If I knew how to position them I should have done it wayback before now. God bless you. Bishopseraphim (talk) 07:44, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

@Bishopseraphim: The only way to protect articles such as Roman Catholic Diocese of Highveld from deletion is to provide reliable independent published sources as references - websites, newspaper articles, books, etc. I can find no evidence on Google to support any of the content of this article, and no Google hits for Simonpierre Nnolumfu. PamD 07:48, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
@Bishopseraphim: I have now nominated the article for deletion. The discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Roman Catholic Diocese of Highveld will normally stay open for at least a week, so this allows you time to add appropriate references and make the article suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. Need help.

Hi Pam,

This is Andrew who built the St Jude High School Page, this school very much exists and this is where I studied. I wanted to create a wiki page for the same.

I have added more details to the page now. You can check the same. I also want to add the map co0ordinates for the same, Could you please suggest on how I can go about doing that, also I want to do wiki better.

Can you please help me do wiki edits and page creation better? Also it'll be great if you send me a notification on my own talk page, like you did before. Thanks again.

Andrew Das (talk) 08:22, 12 July 2017 (UTC)Andrew Das

@Andrew Das: I have already fixed the coordinates before seeing your message (and done various other bits of tidying up, includinhg adding some geographical context to the opening sentence). But the article still has no reliable published source to verify the existence and notability of the school, so I have replaced the PROD message which you removed. Please supply references to websites, books, newspaper articles etc which support the information you have given about the school. Even its own website is better than nothing. And please note the request at the top of this page which asks you to link to any article you are discussing - in this case St Jude High School (Pune). It makes life easier for me and for any other readers of this page who are curious about the conversation. Thanks. PamD 08:29, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello PamD, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Joyce Stevens

Hi PamD Thanks for your welcome. I am a bit confused why the Joyce Stevens page that I created has been deleted. It is good that the original draft appears to now have been approved - but all my edits to the draft would now seem to be lost. A Google search currently turns up the Talk page rather than the article itself. I think it is important to have a visible entry for this notable woman up as soon as possible. CooeeCapella (talk) 19:14, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

@CooeeCapella: Hallo and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm not really familiar with the "Articles for Creation" process, but by copying a draft which hadn't yet been approved into "article space" you seem to have been trying to bypass the system, which isn't good.
But a much worse problem, to my mind, is that you were effectively stealing someone else's work. Yes, you said what you were doing, but without the previous editor having any credit for the article. It's important that the whole editing history of an article is preserved, so that we can see, forever, who contributed which parts of it. By doing a "copy-and-paste" you lost the whole history of the article. If in some circumstances it's appropriate to copy all or part of one article into another (perhaps to split an over-long article), there are rules about how to do it and how to ensure that the history is still traceable. See Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia for much more information.
I hope that makes sense! I didn't know quite what to do when I realised what had happened, so I raised it with DGG who is a very experienced and wise editor and deals with the AfC procedure a lot. I see that he's done a bit of tidying up of the article too ... and I've subsequently tidied up a typo of his, too.
There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia, but it's an interesting journey. Happy Editing! PamD 19:54, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for your response Pam. The other editor was a friend who approved the copy and paste - but I appreciate that was not apparent. We just really want an entry to go up for this very notable woman and were frustrated by repeated knock backs in relation to notability and the like. A google search still takes readers to the talk page rather than the article itself. CooeeCapella (talk) 20:52, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

It was I who moved the article. I shall today or tomorrow check your deleted version, and add anything I think necessary from it. Your work will not be wasted. AfC can be a problem, as not all reviewers are consistently good, For future difficulties there or with any article you are working on , check with me or PamD or any experienced editor in the field about how to deal with them,. Geneva Water Hub and Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace

Thanks very much Pam for very complete suggestions and help. Even if I am part of the Geneva Water Hub team, I am trying to complete these two pages with a total independent view. I could not suggest any modifications to these pages as they were not existing. I am having issues with the French translation of these pages, Geneva Water Hub and Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace. I cannot "continu" or "delete" the already existing ones (1 month and 2 months old) which do not match the English version now. Could I ask you for your help on this ? Thanks very much.

Please reply on my talk Page User talk:Stephankluser

  • @Stephanekluser: Please learn how to sign your posts on talk pages as I advised last Thursday. If you cannot be bothered to abide by the standard practices of Wikipedia editing, other editors are unlikely to offer to help you in your paid role of "Communications officer".
Note also that I say on this talk page that I will reply here to discussions started here, so that I, you, and any other readers can see the full dialogue. My use of the ping template means that you should be getting an "Alert" to tell you that you are mentioned here so that you can find this reply.
And please take the trouble to spell your own username right to make it easier for other editors to find your talk page. Aren't Communications Officers supposed to be the ones who do the proof-reading etc for their colleagues?
I have nothing to do with French Wikipedia, but there are often articles on different Wikipedias which do not exactly match as they have been independently created by different editors. PamD 08:38, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
@Stephanekluser: Apologies, the message on my page used to say "I will reply on this page unless you ask me to reply elsewhere.", so you were quite reasonable to ask me to reply on your talk page (though providing a link would have been useful). But I have now modified the message to make it clear that I will reply here unless there's a good reason to reply elsewhere - it makes life so much easier for everyone concerned. Thanks. PamD 08:45, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
  • @PamD: The top left icon on our website banner changes depending on the language. The official logo can be found on the last page of our flyer at www.genevawaterhub.org/scald/pdf/render/588?width=900&height=600&iframe=true. Is there a way to change the wikicommons logo as an "organisation logo" after having uploaded it, now. Thanks. Stephanekluser (talk) 12:21, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Stephanekluser
You could upload the logo again under a new name, copying it from an official source ... but that would involve cropping the image at either http://www.genevawaterhub.org/scald/pdf/render/588?width=900&height=600&iframe=true (but there's a date top right which would need to be edited out) or http://www.geneve-int.ch/geneva-water-hub-0 (not sure the resolution is good enough there). Then use that image in the article - the old copy will become an "orphaned non-fair use image" and be deleted eventually. If it was just a matter of copying a logo image file from your organisation's website I'd have done it by now, helpfully, but I'm not going to get involved in all the work of trying to sort it out from either of those sources. To be honest there's no clear evidence that the version with curved lines is the official logo, it occurs so rarely. PamD 14:27, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

Draft: Gordon Griffin

Pam - can I trespass on your kindness and ask if you would glance again at Draft: Gordon Griffin? I really feel I have done as much as I ever can to bring this article up to standard, and that the Draft - largely thanks to you - is more Wiki-observant than some which are online. Unless there is something I have missed?? I have improved the links again and again. I'd be so grateful. Very best - Roger — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rogersansom (talkcontribs) 13:10, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

Subsequent to above

Seeing your wording - I'll check here for any response. Rogersansom (talk) 14:05, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

@Rogersansom: You really do need to get accustomed to using talk pages, as that's how Wikipedia works! Glad to see that you worked out how to sign your message this time. On the draft: could you add page numbers to your book sources, refs 6,7,8 (I've also enhanced them by using the ISBN template which makes the ISBN into a link to further sources which verify the book's existence and show its presence in libraries etc). I think the external sources I added on 6 July are sufficient to demonstrate notability. In fact, as any editor can move a draft into article space, I shall now do so. Then fingers crossed that other editors don't disagree with my judgement. I'll be away for a week from tomorrow with only mobile phone (ie very restricted, on mine anyway) editing capability. PamD 14:20, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
@Rogersansom: And another thought: Can you find a Reliable Source with a bit more info about "Mind the Gap"? He doesn't get a mention in the article Mind the gap. If you can find a good source, you could add his name to that article as well as better supporting the info in this one. PamD 14:52, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

My most grateful thanks, Pam. I'll get to work on your suggestions. I much appreciate everything. If you're away for a holiday, have a great one. Sincerely Rogersansom (talk) 15:26, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

Robert Dalzell

Got your messages re Robert Dalzell. As you noted on your second message, the primary topic article should have had a hat note - but did not. Regrettably, I only saw the disambiguation page after I'd moved the Dalzell who died in 1878 and was planning on redirecting the dab page (thanks for doing that). Regarding clearing up the redirects (your third message), I have already dealt with the only obvious one in article space ([21]). The other page in article space (Henry Hawley) almost certainly had a link to the wrong Robert Dalzell. Perhaps that should link to General Dalzell, not Colonel Dalzell? In the past, I have never thought it worth going through the non-article pages (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/DNB Epitome 13) but if you or someone else was to make a convincing argument as to why that would be valuable then I could add it to be "to do" list. Greenshed (talk) 22:25, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

  • @Greenshed: Ah, sorry, I saw Henry Hawley and didn't notice he was the only article-space incoming link (or perhaps it's that you've sorted out the others since... not sure) - quite agree that there's no point in fixing the links from anything other than articles. I was perhaps a bit boggled by then having found the multiple dab pages so confusing! I think all is well now. I do wish people would remember to make hatnotes to link to dab pages, and another hobbyhorse is the number of editors who'll happily create "Xyz (abcd)" without making sure it's linked from "Xyz" by either a hatnote or a dab page entry. Ah well. It's all good fun really, like an infinite jigsaw-puzzle. PamD 22:35, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
@Greenshed: Identified Hawley's successor as our "(died 1758)" chap - his DNB entry includes "Dalzell became major-general in 1727; colonel of a regiment of foot (33rd foot) in 1730, in succession to General Hawley". Done and dusted. PamD 22:42, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

Auraeus Solito is his primary name, Kanakan Balintagos is secondary

About your sending me a "Welcome to Wikipedia" message: I have been editing sporadically on Wikipedia since 2003 but, for reasons beyond my control, my editing was interrupted for several years. When I returned to Wikipedia, I found my account name had been arbitrarily removed and a random name assigned to me. My editing history appears to have been discarded in the move.

About your repeated concerns about a conflict of interest: I do not work for or with Mr. Auraeus Solito. I am a volunteer for several non-profit organizations, all of which deal with indigenous issues, and Mr. Solito's work on indigenous culture is followed by one of those non-profits. I updated the Aureaus Solito Wikipedia entry some time ago, as it was out of date, and he subsequently learned of my identity as "the person" at the non-profit who corrected and updated Wikipedia articles. This past Spring, he contacted me to ask why on Wikipedia his primary name of Auraeus Solito points to his secondary or pen name of Kanakan Balintagos, since he no longer uses Kanakan Balintagos when working as anything other than a playwright. As a courtesy to Mr. Solito, I put in a request with Wikipedia to move the article from Kanakan Balintagos to Auraeus Solito.

Mr. Solito recently contacted me again when he saw that Wikipedia had made no change to the article, and that his name continues to be listed incorrectly. I can't blame him for that, as I now see that if Mr. Solito had contacted Wikipedia directly about this issue, he would have been sternly told that he suffered from a conflict of interest, and that there was a special procedure in place where he would need to show good cause why his name should be corrected.

I now see that, more than likely, the first Redirect must be removed from the article "Auraeus Solito" and then a second Redirect must be placed at "Kanakan Balintagos" and then a "correct move" needs to be specially requested, not just normally requested -- and that would be only the beginning of the process required to correct those two articles. None of this can or will be done by me. I have no interest in this.

@Kudpung: I've logged back on today, mostly because I was eager to add a couple of photos I'd taken to Thomas Thwaites and expand that article by mentioning the V&A installation (one element of the break was a real away-from-home break to London - it was such fun to walk into a gallery of the V&A, see that installation quite unexpectedly, and think "I've read the book: I've written the Wikipedia article"!). Then got waylaid onto the recent episode of The Museum of Curiosity and found three interesting red links: now three good solid sourced stubs. I'm about to log off again as there is still too much real life stuff I need to do and I need a break from the delightful time-sink of stub-sorting and other Wikignoming. proper linking guidelines

hi PamD, thank you so much for the work you did on Joe Texidor. i just happened to notice you edited after i did, and saw you included a link to "sound tree." however, it doesn't seem like a page with that name exists on wikipedia. i removed the red link, but i urge you to expand on what a sound tree is, as someone uncertain about musical instruments may not know. thanks! CanoeUnlined (talk) 04:32, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

Red links indicate articles which don't yet exist but which someone ought to write some time. I haven't a clue what a "Sound tree" is (though it is mentioned in several sources so isn't a typo), but someone might well write that article eventually. I left a note at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Jazz to see if anyone could help. Meanwhile, please don't unlink the term. Let's just wait for the article to appear. That's how red links work. Thanks. PamD 11:17, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
@CanoeUnlined: - forgot to ping. PamD 11:54, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
thank you for your response, PamD. i didn't realize that's how red links work, so i appreciate the insight. however, i don't feel that sound tree is qualified to be a page at all. a detailed google search for it doesn't provide any notable links; the only thing i can find is a brand called sound tree, and musical instruments made for plants. if you can find links to make a strong page, please let me know. otherwise, i really don't think it's notable.
however, i did see a wikipedia article for something called a bell tree. do you think this is the instrument used by Joe Texidor? CanoeUnlined (talk) 23:15, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
You don't know what it is, I don't know what it is, but we know it existed from several different credits to Texidor and for example this (last line). So let's just leave the red link, together with my plea for help at the wikiproject, and see what turns up. There is no dishonour in red links: they just indicate that the encyclopedia is not yet complete (and never will be). PamD 08:23, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for rescuing the article. Prof. Posin was graduate advisor to a singer/dancer who worked with my theatre company and who introduced us. I thought the former worthy of an article and drafted on on the spot. Thank you again. Robert Greer (talk) 17:53, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello PamD, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 14304 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a day.
  • Currently there are 532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users before WP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!

Technology update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter for page curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see: T175225

General project update:

  • On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia began the autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users with autoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected to a newly designed landing page.
  • Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Anna Fortunato Brivio

Dear PamD, I would like to apologize regarding the page Anna Fortunato Brivio. I had posted it on the pretense that there was enough content to make her biography notable, and I didn't have enough time to confirm that because I was in the middle of doing my schoolwork. Thanks for your help on Mike Brown (transport executive). It has been a long time since I created a stub, so any feedback or advice you could give would be much appreciated!--Jimbo Wales (talk) 18:03, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

@Jimbo Wales: Hallo Jimbo, I hadn't noticed who'd created the stub. It could do with a bit more history about what he was doing before taking up his current post (the Queen's source talks about him being "Chief Operating Office for London Underground during the terror attacks of July 7, 2005", for a start). Also I don't think we should SHOUT the title of a reference even if it appears in caps in the source - and the apostrophe in "Queen's" matters: fixed those two aspects. PamD 18:12, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
I've also added him to the Michael Brown disambiguation page. PamD 18:13, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Hey! PamD

Thanks for pointing out my mistakes while editing wikipedia. I had stopped as soon as I got your message. It was indeed a matter of different time zones. Dial911 (talk) 03:42, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

@Dial911: no problem - sorry about the time zone thing. Red links are important in that they make potential future connections: it is very satisfying when you create a new article and find that there are instantly half a dozen "What links here" links which had previously been red. Adding redirects from other versions of someone's name can produce even more links - eg if they've been listed as an award winner under their full set of forenames, even though the article is at "Forename surname". Happy Editing. PamD 06:55, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

You deleted my Count Arthur Strong article. I am a fan of Count Arthur Strong and have put lots of time and effort into it. Could you possibly not delete the page again?

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:54, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Please explain on the talk page why you tossed out those three tags

Stub sorting on Twinkle

Hi Pam, hope you're well.

I was doing some NPP work a bit ago and I thought tagging the page just with stub makes more work for WikiProject Stub Sorting. I'm thinking of proposing a kind of drop-down "what kind of stub you talkin'" thing for Twinkle / Page Curation and thought I'd consult you as you seem quite active with stub sorting.

Best,

DrStrauss talk 16:32, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

@DrStrauss: I'm in two minds about encouraging NPP-ers to try to choose specific stub tags. There's a risk that they'll go for bio-stub, book-stub or Mexico-stub rather than digging down to find Widereceiver-1890s-stub or Scotland-engineer-stub; or Agriculture-book-stub; Chihuahua-geo-stub or Mexico-bridge-struct-stub). And once it doesn't have stub, it doesn't appear in Category:Stubs, so it won't be found by the Stub-Sorters. But then we get to the philosophical question of "What are sorted stubs for?", "How many people ever search through a stub category?" and so on. Possibly just adding stub and appropriate project banners on talk page is enough (heretical viewpoint?).
Assuming that we accept the usefulness of stub-sorting, then your drop-down system would need to go deep, deep, into the hierarchy of available stubs and encourage people to keep on looking until they'd exhausted the possibilities (which can include multiple stub templates for one article, don't forget). And not just stub categories - there are loads of officially approved stub templates which don't have their own categories. A challenging project! PamD 22:03, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Hmm, interesting points. I'll give it a ponder! DrStrauss talk 14:27, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi. You realize that your revert contradicts other information on the same page, I assume? (And, yes, the source still needs a stronger link.) Thanks. Wolfdog (talk) 13:39, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

Congratulations!

I came here to start yet another article about an author who has published multiple award-winning novels, but since you deleted the last one I put in (who has six different entire series of novels published and has been nominated for a few major awards, although he didn't get any yet), I guess I may as well not bother.

You win! No point in bothering with Wikipedia any more.

MJustice (talk) 10:34, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

@MJustice: Please don't give up on Wikipedia. I didn't actually delete Robert Kroese: I proposed it as an uncontroversial deletion as the article gave no evidence that he is a notable author. The article was then deleted, a week later, by an admin @Luk:. You, or anyone else, could have objected to that proposed deletion during that week. You can now apply to have the article undeleted - see Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion.
Just publishing books is not enough to make an author notable in Wikipedia terms. See WP:NAUTHOR. For a novelist, if you can find and cite reviews (not just listings) of their work in what are considered Reliable Sources (mainstream newspapers etc), that usually satisfies. For Kroese, there's an article in the Independent which discusses him, and a listing which shows one of his audiobooks in a top 10. Try re-creating the article but adding sources which show that he isn't just "an author" but "a notable author" in Wikipedia's terms. Happy editing! PamD 10:53, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
Yuck - We have an editor who creates an article and leaves it alone, and then comes back in six months to flame us. I don't see this as an editor who is worth reasoning with to retain. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:24, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

A link to the official JSS website is included under "External links": it is www.jss.gr.jp/en/. The linked web page displays a banner/logo at the top; a direct link to the logo is www.jss.gr.jp/wp-content/themes/official/en/common/image/logo.png. Note that the name of the file is "logo.png". The logo says "The Japan Statistical Society".

I think that it would be good to include an image of the logo in the article. BetterMath (talk) 00:03, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

@BetterMath: Certainly it's a good idea to include an image of the logo. But please read WP:THE where you'll see that "The" is only included if it's usually capitalised in running text, and then see your ref 1 and also http://www.jss.gr.jp/wp-content/uploads/brochure.pdf which starts off "Welcome to the Japan Statistical Society". PamD 06:53, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
And it looks as if the name in the round logo doesn't include "The". PamD 06:57, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
I had not noticed that at the top of the brochure there is a seal which does not include "The". The seal makes the situation really different, and I no longer oppose having the default name of the article being without "The".
When I first reverted your redirect, I should have opened a discussion about the issue, as per WP:BRD. I did not do so, and for that I apologize. My excuse is that I was sure of my position, because of the logo(!). BetterMath (talk) 13:03, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

Pumpkin toadlet.

Hi, thanks for fixing my stub error with Pumpkin_toadlet the mistake was made because I was reading the article in mobile view and the stub tag didn't show up. I'm not sure why not- guessing there is a reason. I was just trying to fix what I thought was a missing template. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kitten88.r (talkcontribs) 20:16, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

The article Right of way (shipping) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This stub is in poor English, it is unclear in what it is trying to say and uses a term which navigational textbooks never use. There is no "right of way", the regs only refer to a "stand-on" vessel (see rule 17).

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 15:44, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Panicka Nadar Kudiyiruppu

Just a friendly heads up. I declined your no context speedy deletion request for Panicka Nadar Kudiyiruppu. On the talk page you mentioned "not enough context", but no context is literally that -- absolutely no context, including even enough context in the title alone to do a google search. Instead, I cleaned up the article a bit and added the context found from said search.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 02:22, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

@Fabrictramp: Thanks for that - I've reread the CSD A1 definition and agree that it does refer to there being enough info to Google the title, will bear that in mind. It was still a pretty rubbishy stub, and even after your help it lacked geographical context. You didn't add a source for the statement that it is in Nalumavadi: where did that come from? I've added geog context to the lead, refined the stub type and added a category, on the basis of your unsourced statement! PamD 20:46, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
It came from Google maps. I debated about whether to add that as a source -- I'd really like to see a better one. Sigh.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 19:36, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

@Firespeaker: Please remember to include sources for all content you add to the encyclopedia, from the very start of an article if it's new. And please sign talk page posts, even if they are templated messages. Thanks. PamD 18:19, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
I'm always careful to sign talk page messages; I guess I thought the template would do that for me. Sorry! As for the article, I linked it to articles on other wikipedia that cited sources and figured someone else could verify and add that in, or that I could get to it later. Sometimes I only have two minutes to dedicate to a Wikipedia edit, and not the 20 minutes it often requires to follow up with [easily accessible!] sources. —Firespeaker (talk) 04:36, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
@Firespeaker: Yes, the various templates are unhelpfully inconsistent as to whether they include a signature, also in terms of section headings. But if you've only got the two minutes, perhaps it's best to start a stub as a draft or in userspace, and not add it to the encyclopedia until you've got time to provide a source and more than just a dictionary definition. Happy editing! PamD 08:05, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Read WP:NPROF and decide how to establish his Notability in Wikipedia's terms. In particular, look for information which other people have written about Kortanje in Reliable Sources, rather than just describing his work on the basis of his own papers. That's been the heart of the problems which all you editors (Raul, Miguel, Gabriel, yourself) have had.
Oh and please don't SHOUT on talk pages, it only upsets other editors, and take care when adding replies in between other editors' posts. Your replies interspersed but unsigned have now left that talk page a very confused mess. PamD 22:03, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Dear Pam,

Thanks for your message.

I probably left my answer in a place where you didn't see it.

Regarding the potential conflict of interest you identified, I never finished my PhD (I found a more interesting job outside academia), so this comment is kind of outdated.

All the information I've been adding to this page is readily available in the public domain (and I've always properly indicated the sources).

Anyway, thanks for checking the integrity of Wikipedia pages.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello PamD, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: . Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Pawan Nayyar, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Chamba (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

- User:SuperHamster and User:Titodutta on behalf of The English Wikipedia WAM Team

This will be the last message you receive from the English Wikipedia WAM team for being a 2016 participant. If you sign up for WAM 2017, you will continue receiving periodic updates on the 2017 event.

Maximiliano Emanuel Korstanje listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Maximiliano Emanuel Korstanje. Since you had some involvement with the Maximiliano Emanuel Korstanje redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. Heather MacNeil

There is only so much I can do (given the various projects I am involved in) - and better a stub for others to develop than a red link.

Would it be possible to have some collaboration on the remaining gaps in List of archivists - perhaps using [22] for starting things off. Jackiespeel (talk) 11:45, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

@Jackiespeel: Please slow down your work on all your various projects so that you make time to at least create full sentences when adding content to an encyclopedia, and follow the WP:MOS of starting the article off with the bolded subject name. That doesn't take long. Please rebalance your priorities between quality and quantity of articles. Thanks. And I choose my own articles to create, when I have an interest and a couple of decent sources for a topic (though I treat each month's WP:Women in Red editathon as a challenge to contribute at least one article): working through an unsourced list doesn't appeal. PamD 11:58, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
There is a certain amount of 'necessary tidying up/updating' etc spotted in the process - and some things are best done in tandem (or more involvement). Jackiespeel (talk) 13:45, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
@Jackiespeel: If you don't have the time to create at least a proper lead sentence, please create the article as a draft instead of dumping it into mainspace. Some "necessary tidying up/updating" needs to be done before an article is fit to be part of our encyclopedia. Thanks. PamD 14:05, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello PamD, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Proposed deletion of Hayes Carll albums

I've now removed several of your prods from these articles. For the latest one, Lovers and Leavers (album), the first two pages of a Google search found the following coverage: Rolling Stone, Rolling Stone, Allmusic, Metacritic (listing 5 professional reviews), PopMatters, Wide Open Country, No Depression. Can you please explain why you were unable to find these, and also the coverage of his other albums that was easily found from a Google search. --Michig (talk) 09:54, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Jehoshaphat (disambiguation)

PamD, your revision to my edit of Jehoshaphat (disambiguation) this morning means that the disambiguation page is not helpful for readers looking for information on either Jehoshaphat the Recorder or Jehoshaphat, son of Paruah, so I have restored my edit. Happy New Year! -BobKilcoyne (talk) 18:33, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

@BobKilcoyne:Sorry, I missed those two while reconstructing the page back to the correct format for a dab page where there is an established Primary Topic. Have now reverted you but re-added both them, with a bit of tidying. Hope it looks OK to you now. Happy New Year too. PamD 18:52, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks!

I very much appreciate your contributions to Patricia Louise Dudley. My latest strategy in responding to AFDs is to try improving the article to the point it becomes easier to defend a "keep" stance, and your contributions may have helped turn the tide in this instance. Prior to finding the endowment info, I had doubts I could vote to keep, and your work cleaning up and emphasizing her relevance and the addition of info from her (sparse) obit were spot-on. So, thanks! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 19:16, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Hatnotes

I don't think the hatnotes are needed from New/Old Hutton to Hutton but are needed from Hutton to New/Old, which is where the confusion came from. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:57, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

@Crouch, Swale: I agree that they're essential at Hutton, but I think they are potentially helpful at Old H and New H too so would prefer that we keep them there. PamD 18:00, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Maybe the Distinguish would be better, but I'd even question if that is needed. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:40, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Clan chief

This discussion stems from George Maclachlan, 21st of Maclachlan. PamD 08:56, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi you just reverted my csd saying that a clan chief is sufficient claim to notability. RHaworth deleted an identical article by the same creator under the A7 criteria hence my continuing nominations. Domdeparis (talk) 00:25, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

The deleted article was Euan John Maclachlan, 25th of Maclachlan. Domdeparis (talk) 00:27, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
@Domdeparis and RHaworth: I think that the statement that someone was a clan chief is an "assertion of significance or importance" which means that they should not be speedily deleted A7: take them to AfD if you feel that their article harms the encyclopedia. It might be that a list of chiefs within the clan article, with redirects, would be more appropriate - see Clan MacNeil. PamD 08:47, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
I don't really think that the article "harms" the encyclopedia as such any more than any page that does not assert notability. The criteria for an A7 deletion does not make any reference to harm. I do not believe that being a clan chief guarantees that the person would be notable as per the 2nd part of the Wikipedia:Credible claim of significance test especially given that the page on clan chiefs states "While Scottish law recognizes the existence of Scottish clans, chiefs and chieftains, this recognition is only one of social dignity or precedence via the Lyon Court, and suggests as such it does not involve any interest for which the law has jurisdiction." Domdeparis (talk) 10:10, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
The article on George Maclachlan, 21st of Maclachlan could certainly be improved, as all the chiefs could be included in a list, with notes, making that a more useful reference. However, this article could be improved by stating where he was deputy lieutenant and justice of the peace. Was there not an interesting courtcase following his death? You could also note that he was father to an admiral, whose claim to an article in Wikipedia is, in my view greater, though he does not have one. All this could make him morenatable, though it does not answer your secific point. Shipsview (talk) 19:14, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
I'm not sure that being a deputy lieutenant or JP is enough in themselves to make him notable and as notability is not inherited the fact that his son was an admiral is not a credible claim of significance. Domdeparis (talk) 09:10, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
Not in themselves but collectively. Shipsview (talk) 11:06, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Domdeparis: If you nominate an article to be deleted it should be because you believe that the encyclopedia will be better without it than with it. So if you don't believe that the article harms the encyclopedia, why nominate it for deletion? "Because I could" is not a valid answer. And A7 is not a test of notability: the 2nd bullet point says "if there is no evident claim of significance in the article ...", and to be the leader of a Scottish clan is a claim of significance. That said, entries in a list of the clan chiefs, either freestanding or as a table in the clan article, would probably be OK for some of this lot, the ones with nothing much else sourced to say about them, with incoming redirects from their names, leaving articles which have a reasonable amount of sourced content to stand. @Shamm2001: pinging original creator though they don't seem to have edited since the spree last June when they created stubs for many Maclachlan chiefs. PamD 11:22, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Shipsview: Court case? Tell us more (sourced, in the article!). PamD 11:28, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
I do not have the details, just this snippet George Maclachlan died in 1887, Helen Maclachlan in 1895. The Crown claimed Estate Duty on Helen Maclachlan's death ...[1] I am not writing the article, just contributing to the discussion! Shipsview (talk) 16:34, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Shipsview: Estate duty was part of inheritance tax and as of 1889 the Crown claimed an additional 1% on successions over £10,000 and this was called estate duty. Inheritance_tax#History_(succession_duty). So it is unlikely that this refers to a court case. Domdeparis (talk) 17:22, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
I think it is a question of semantics. A correctly sourced article that doesn't meet notability standards is not "harmful" as such but it is not what wikipedia is about, such an article is out of the scope of Wikipedia so does not have its place here. One could argue that it does no harm to leave these articles here because they are not attack pages not copyvio not adevertising and are just taking up a bit of space. It's a little bit like sitting down in an empty 1st class seat on an aeroplane, you are not doing any harm as such as it makes no difference to the other passengers or the crew whether you are there or in economy, but it is not your place, nobody would argue that the crew would not be in their right to ask you to move back to economy class. The WP:DEL-REASONs do not say that an article has to be harmful to wikipedia (that idea is very subjective I believe) here we are in a case of #8.
I totally agree A7 is not a test of notability as such and it may be that being a clan chief is sigificant enough, but from what I can gather as there are no guidelines as to what significant means it is up to each person to decide. The very fact that an admin deleted a clan chief under A7 and you removed the tag on another clan chief page is proof of this subjectivity. Domdeparis (talk) 13:29, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Mark Constantine

Hello PamD,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Mark Constantine for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Turgan Talk 19:31, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

@Turgan: You tagged this long-established redirect from founder to firm just after it had been blanked without explanation by a new editor with a COI-ish name. When you find a blank article please check its history before nominating it for deletion and consider fixing any vandalism or inexplicable editing like this. Thanks. PamD 23:19, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
@PamD: I came across the redirect as part of the backlog of the new page review. Just coincidence that the blanking happened around the same time. I did look at the history, and at the time considered tagging for deletion rather than restoring the redirect. I am more than happy to have an admin overrule me on that. Turgan Talk 18:30, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Probably preaching to the converted ... Redirects

Hallo all my talk-page watchers and anyone else who drops by. I've just written a longish post at Talk:Ahmed el Inglizi and thought I'd copy it here for a wider audience!

Redirects, please

Hallo, people who have this article watchlisted ... and there are certainly lots of you who have edited it since 2010.

Please, remember that an alternative name bolded in the lead is supposed to be the target of a redirect (or perhaps a hatnote or dab page entry): it shows the reader why they have landed on this page. That's the purpose of the formatting. So please remember to create that redirect. I've just created Ahmed El Alj and Ahmed Laalaj, both seven years late - they were in the article on 15 August 2010.

Redirects are important:

  1. They help the reader find the article they want
  2. They make it less likely that a future enthusiastic but misguided editor will create a second article on the same topic at a different title
  3. Satisfyingly-often they resolve a redlink which may have been around for years in another article: this happens particularly often when "Sue Bloggs" gets a redirect from her Sunday name "Anastasia Susan Bloggs" by which she was listed in some article about winners of an annual award, elections to a legislature, or participants in a sports event.

So please, make the redirects ... and then check that there aren't any wrong incoming links to them which need disambiguation.

Thanks.

Me, obsessive about redirects ... no way. Well, umm, perhaps. Goes with the territory as a retired librarian - trying to help readers actually find the info that we've got stored away in this amazing encyclopedia. Happy Editing!

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello PamD, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Korstanje

The talk page is semiprotected because of relentless promotional editing by Argentinian IPs, which is almost certainly one person, who is to a very high degree of probability either Korstanje or a close connection. The correct response to attempts to circumvent this protection is WP:RBI. This IP is evading a block. Guy (Help!) 15:21, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Please don't do tat again. You are not allowed to proxy for block-evading users. Your extension of good faith does you credit, but as you must surely know, these IPs are the same person as the blocked sockpuppeteer user:Vanrobert99. If a talk page is semiprotected, at least please check that the IP trying to get round it, is not the same ISP and location as the one that caused the protection. Yes? Guy (Help!) 20:38, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
@JzG: I was not Assuming any Good Faith: I intended only to point out that the IP was canvassing about the article, and to highlight the 2 articles to which they drew my attention though not as precedents for expansion of MK's article, as they wanted, but as candidates for some substantial pruning. Though, yes, I'd forgotten that the talkpage was semiprotected: I'd assumed that they'd come to my talk page to comment out of sight of you and others, so that I was aiming to thwart that intention. PamD 23:20, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
@JzG and Bishonen: I note that Bishonen has just now PRODded the two articles mentioned above. Thanks. PamD 23:44, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) You're fast, Pam! I came here to say that I thought you were right about those two. The Salazar article has been AfD'd once, and recreated by the same user (who could it possibly be?!). However, I didn't want to speedy per G4, as there's more of it now, and I guess I'm not sure I'm supposed to prod it either. Can't find anything against it in WP:PROD, but maybe I didn't look carefully enough. Anyway. Bishonen | talk 23:47, 8 February 2018 (UTC).
I understand. And thank you I misread it. However, I caution you to be very careful here: there is a long-term problem of abusive editing, and any Argentine IP address is almost certainly going to be a sock of the blocked user. You can check the ISP by looking at the contributions of the IP, and down at he bottom is a WHOIS link. The blocked user uses one of two ISPs, both in Argentina. Contributions of 190.104.232.0/24, for example, show nothing, over more than two years, other than promoting Korstanje. So you need to be careful (a) not to allow your good nature to be abused and (b) not to inadvertently proxy for a banned user. As I say, I absolutely assume good faith on your part, and it does you credit. I am assuming that you understand IP allocation, geolocation and how to check for subnets and the like, but I'm happy to explain if not. I am deeply suspicious of the claims around Korstanje because he is far too young to be as influential as his sock army makes out: the only academic I know who reached full professor at that age, is now a deputy vice-chancellor, has a string of patents as long as your arm, has many hundreds of publications including books - one of which is a standard undergraduate text - and he would look, on paper, less impressive than this guy. Which either means that he's some kind of prodigy, despite his modest institutional associations, or, more likely, he's engaged in assiduous self-promotion. And incidentally I know a lot of academics, and the same is true for pretty much all of them across multiple fields. Even the guy who has, at a similar age to Korstanje, won national prizes covered beyond the specialist press and written popular books. So: this hits all my suspicion buttons. I confess I don't look much beyond the obvious abuse. To address that, I have seen a lot of examples of spammers who, when they get pushback, play the WP:OTHERSTUFF card. I suspect that is what happened here, having looked at those articles. And I agree that both look like adverts. Guy (Help!) 23:58, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Hello

Good to meet you. You tagged the redirect Unitarian Society Meeting House for deletion because its main article link, the Madison, Wisconsin branch meeting house, may not be the only place using that term. I had doubts as well before creating the redirect, but checked out google and all of the main sources or mentions google-link back to the Wisconsin site. This surprised me, but the historical church did seem to carry that title as well, so I went ahead with the redirect. I didn't know if this would reach you if I put it on the talk page, so placed this information here. Thanks for having a look at this. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:12, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

@Randy Kryn: Feel free to dePROD it. It just seemed a bit unlikely, but we have some pretty generic terms redirecting to single instances where they are the only one in the encyclopedia - I must have been feeling a bit strict when I tagged that one! PamD 17:52, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, and no, you were right to question it (I did before creating it) because it does sound like a generic name but surprisingly turns out not to be. Thanks for keeping a close eye on new pages. Randy Kryn (talk) 21:43, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

Redirect PRODS

Per Wikipedia:Proposed deletion, you can't prod a redirect. I will be removing all the prods you added to redirects. Please take these redirects to WP:RFD instead. Sro23 (talk) 02:13, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

@Sro23: Sorry about that - there's a fault in the New Page Patrol software as it offers the option. (There's another fault too as the RfD option doesn't work properly). The NPP project asked people to focus on redirects, so I've tried but got off on the wrong tack. Thanks for dePRODdding this lot. I'll be taking them to RfD. PamD 07:08, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Minor edits

I generally don't make many minor edits to articles, excluding the reclassificatory ones that I make as the consequence of adding new information to old articles or re-direction pages or through the creation of new articles. The common-name removal in that instance was not given reference, and was not generally used in the context of the article. If you have further issue with my edits, please discuss such complaints on my talk-page. Yours Truly, HNdlROdU. Signed, 20:01, 16 February 2018 (UTC).

I return the discourse to your talk-page as you have given no valid reason to move it to my talk-page. The edit you chose to represent was a poor choice; it was a mistake on my part, as I had marked the edit as minor, relative to the reclassificatory editing, and had proceeded to edit the page in other matters. You may return any information that was lost accordingly. In your reply, if you seek to keep the discussion to my talk-page, please state why. Yours Truly, HNdlROdU. Signed, 11:38, 17 February 2018 (UTC).
@H:NdlROdU: Just above, you invited me to discuss any further issues with your edits on your own talk page. Now you want to talk here. Fine by me. As far as I can see you have labelled almost every recent edit as "minor" including redirecting a long-established article to a new topic. Again, please read WP:MINOR, even just the "nutshell" summary: anything which makes a difference to the meaning of an article is not minor. Changes to classifications in taxoboxes are not minor. PamD 12:50, 17 February 2018 (UTC)@HNdlROdU: re-pinging after typo PamD 12:52, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
I do apologise for the confusion. I was rather so myself. The minor edit of which you refer was, indeed, minor; as Echinostomida is to Plagiorchiida now synonymised, re-directing the former to the latter is not contentious. As an aside, I do not observe the "pings" of which you do refer, and you need not trouble yourself with them in the future. Yours Truly, HNdlROdU. Signed, 20:40, 17 February 2018 (UTC).

Merge

Hi PamD, Greetings to you. I need advice on the topic "merge". After reading the merge instructions, I got a little confused on how to perform a discussion merge. Kindly advise if my understand is correct as below and please correct me accordingly. Example: Propose "Texas" to merge to "U.S."

1 On the destination page - On "U.S." Talk page inserts the following == Merger proposal ==

I propose that "Texas" be merged into "U.S'. I think that the content in the "Texas" article can easily be explained in the context of "U.S", and the "U.S" article is of a reasonable size that the merging of "Texas" will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned.

2. On to be merge page - on "Texas" article page places the following

I think I miss something above/ incomplete. Kindly advise what are the missing parts/procedure/codes/message to be place or how to proceed. Thank you in advance. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 07:32, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

  • @CASSIOPEIA: I use "Twinkle": it makes life so much easier. In its drop-down menu it offers "merge", "mergeto" and "mergefrom", and in each case prompts you to put in the article names and then does all the necessary. I haven't looked into doing it by hand, but I'm sure the instructions at WP:MERGE are the ones to follow, so just take a deep breath and read them very carefully then go ahead accordingly. Or start to use WP:TWINKLE. Good luck. PamD 12:50, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi PamD, Ok thanks, will try on TW and see it would work. Have a good day. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 08:17, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Request for protection

Hi, can you please protect Houri? From time to time, it gets vandalised by User:WikiAddictAccount, whom I suspect is IP 103.38.18.159, given the nature of the edits. Leo1pard (talk) 04:24, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

@Leo1pard: Sorry, I'm not an admin - just a stub-sorter, new page patroller, disambiguation geek, etc. You need to go to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection or use Twinkle (I do the latter, much easier and it ties up all the necessary loose ends). PamD 08:25, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Did you know?

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Screenshot showing some changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Screenshot showing the same changes to an article. Most changes are highlighted with text formatting.

This screenshot shows the same edit as the wikitext diff. The visual diff highlights the removal of one word and the addition of a new sentence. An arrow indicates that the paragraph changed location.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

  • The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
  • The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [23]
  • Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [24]
  • The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

Let's work together

  • The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
  • Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.
  • The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <references /> or the plain (no parameters) reflist template. If you edit a different wiki, you can request multi-column support for your wiki. [25]
  • If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!

@Maria Sieglinda von Nudeldorf: But unless there is a Wikipedia article about this PAM, or a sorted sourced mention of it in a WP article, then it has no place in the dab page. A dab page is not a general list of abbreviations. PamD 00:31, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Soldier's Oath redirect discussion

Hi, This is just to let you know that I just responded again to you and User:BDD in the Redirects for Discussion section on Soldier's Oath / Soldiers' Oath.
