Mike, if you're going to PROD something because you don't think it's notable, I suggest adding a discussion (or at least a note) in the relevant talk page, especially if you've been denied a Speedy Delete on the subject previously. As it is, a 39-year old organization with 75,000 active members (the largest of its kind) and two high-visibility programs (racing and Street Survival) isn't exactly what I'd term 'non-notable.' — Mustang_DVS (talk | contribs) 21:51, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion Inappropriate 3

Okay. First of all, you're going to show me some proof that the articles spurred some kind of libel lawsuit. If that claim has any merit, the articles would no longer be on the Internet for all to see. I doubt MSNBC takes libel that lightly. Secondly, I don't think your narrow idea of notability entitles you the power to speedy delete whatever you want out of hand.

In a brief perusal of your talk page, I noticed many have commented on what they feel to be your arrogance and condescension with regards to this website. I also noticed that many have complained that you are quick on the trigger when it comes to the speedy delete function and that your judgements have been overturned in the past. You have already scrambled to decry my article's notability when your 'attack page' argument couldn't hold water. All this leads me to believe you should restore my article and allow a debate to take place on whether it can continue to exist rather than force me to go the deletion review route.

Speedy Deletion of THEINFOVAULT

There are numerous pages on wiki that give details about websites that are similar to THEINFOVAULT........ Government News Network, The Great News Network, signs of the times (News Website), Guerrilla News Network, etc....

What can I do to make my contribution fit the requirements? I have read the terms and conditions and I do not believe that I am violating them. I don't believe this to be "advertising" - as the website I am trying to write about is entirely non-profit and sells nothing. It is an information resource website. I try to offer facts about the website and I do not give any personal opinions. Any suggestions? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Solerift (talkcontribs) 15:52, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Feel free to undo any of my actions. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 02:58, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey Orangemike,

Regarding your deletion of A.WOLF, I just wanted to stop by and let you know (if you didn't already) that the user who closed the discussion was a non-admin (see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Autocracy). The consensus is pretty clear, but I was thinking that it might not hurt for you to stop by the AfD as the deleting admin and confirm the result to eliminate any chances of this winding up at WP:DRV down the road. Thanks, and sorry to bug you! --jonny-mt 07:52, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Also...

If I can make an immodest suggestion, I haven't gotten a single complain about CSD tagging since I put up this explanation page and linked to it from my talk page. I know you're under more fire as the deleting admin, but it might help weed out some of the clutter.... --jonny-mt 07:56, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Vimala Devi

I'm currently having an exchange of e-mails with the author is question. It will probably take a while for me to get all the information I need to write up the article. Just out of interest, is there any way of citing personal correspondence on Wikipedia? Paul Castro (talk) 14:47, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

About the poem I cited. I am writing the article with the knowledge and collaboration of the writer. What would count as permission for me to cite from her poetry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paul Castro (talkcontribs) 15:52, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Just to clarify - I'm citing from poems that have been out of print for more than 40 years. I realise that this probably means they are still in copyright, but the fact that they are important to an understanding of her work and unavailable warrants to my mind their inclusion in Vimala Devi's entry.

She would have to donate all rights to that poem. They would then be licensed for anybody else to reproduce, royalty-free, under the terms of one of our licenses. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:54, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification. Vimala has e-mailed me a copyright form so that I can cite from her poems and post a personal photograph of her on the entry referring to her. I'm a little bit confused as to what to do now. Could you advise?

Paul Castro (talk) 17:07, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Does she understand that she's not just giving permission to post the poems and picture here, but licensing them to be reprinted elsewhere without royalties? If so, go to Wikipedia:COPY#Using copyrighted work from others for further guidance. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:18, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Question about deletion of "Kambri Crews" page

Dear Orangemike,

Hi. I just learned that the article I'd created about Kambri Crews was deleted.

I honestly believe Crews deserves a Wiki entry. She's a major figure in the New York comedy community, and also in the deaf commmunity as a storyteller.

The article I constructed is obviously deficient, or you wouldn't have cut it. I'm new to this and don't yet fully understand what needs to be done to make a Wiki entry acceptable.

But I want you to know that the underlying substance is there. Crews is a genuinely notable figure who touches the lives of thousands of creative people in NYC via her comedy activities, and the deaf community via her blog.

I obviously don't yet know how to construct an article in the style you need -- but I'd love to so. So I'm writing to ask if you'd be kind enough to give me specific guidance by telling me what in the article is okay, what isn't, and what I'd need to do to fix the article and make it a good entry.

I apologize if these are overly ignorant questions. It could be I'm too close to the article to see it objectively. But I was genuinely surprised to see it removed; so I'd really value your perspective, and your advice.

Most sincere thanks in advance for your knowledge and help.

Warm regards,

Greetings! I wondering why the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut entry was deleted. The entry appeared factual, non-advertising, non-promotional, and heavily sourced. This foundation is one of the few foundations in the nation dedicated strictly to achieving universal health care. I find many similar entries for other state-based foundations and nonprofits in Wikipdeia.

Your feedback would be much appreciated!

Wagner45 (talk) 19:06, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello Mike - I disagree that Universal Health Care Foundation is not noteworthy. That's because as part of the lawsuit settlement against Anthem Blue Cross, it was given money to specifically work toward universal health care in only one state. I know there are state organizations elsewhere that are similarly limited in their work. Also, I don't think that any of them, as part of a lawsuit settlement, were "ordered" by the court to do this. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so. Also, I believe it cannot take a position on what kind of universal health care the state should enact. I appreciate the comments about the references and links. I'll try to find others and rewrite it and show how it is notable. I looked at other non-profit pages. I can't see any difference as far as the way they represent a specific issue. Could you provide guidance there?User:Wagner45 15:04, March 13, 2008

Hello Wagner45. I'm not Orangemike, but I looked at the deleted article, and it seems rather promotional and fluffy. The comment that you added above seems (to me) more informative than the entire article that was deleted. Is there a chance that you could offer a more informative article for re-creation? Remember that outside commentary, especially in the press, is more impressive than insider sources regarding the true impact of the organization. Here is a typical sentence from the deleted article: "'The Foundation supports and assists diverse groups to come together to develop ideas..." Sure. EdJohnston (talk) 20:23, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. That guidance is very useful. I will try again. I can tell you that this foundation has been constantly cited in newspapers. But, of course, the articles are taken off the web quickly. I think I'll do more digging into its creation too. I find that interesting. This may take awhile!!User:Wagner45 —Preceding comment was added at 20:49, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

I have just created an article for Inglewood, Virginia. Then, I discovered there are two Inglewoods in that state, in separate counties. Regarding Youth United

Hi, my article Youth United was deleted this time by stifle. There was no point in deleting the article, as review was going on, and each recommendation was based on earlier deletion criteria. notability of Jellyfish.com

Hi, there. I removed the notability tag because it's notable not because of its size but because of its new way of implementing CPA and the pending patent on that, and that Microsoft bought the company only because of that, and for improving Live Search.

It's also midly relevant that it raised $5 million dollars and a $1 million dollars on a short time, which got mentioned on two or three paper bussiness journals from Milkwaukee and Winsconsin. The purchase was mentioned on PcWorld, analyzed on eWeek's Microsot Watch, and mentioned on lots of places.

Launch was mentioned on the online version of Wall Street Journal, too. That and the other sources should satisfy the need for secondary sources on WP:CORP#Primary_criterion .

It's also notable for being the first site using only CPA.

I removed the citations needed because of the sources added.

I also updated Cost_per_action to include Jellfish and mentions to other companies that I found with them.

If you still think it's not notable enough, then feel free to nominate for deletion so other editors can opinate --Enric Naval (talk) 11:37, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the tags and for using a prod instead of a speedy deletion. I would try to address the issues, but I feel that I my editing abilities don't reach to redacting the article better, so I'll leave it up to other editors to solve the mess I made improve the article. Hi I've noticed that you've been hardblocking accounts lately for simply having names that you perceive as promotional. The hardblock is intended for cases where it is obvious that the user is ignoring the username policy, and in the case of names that are simply promotional, this isn't obvious. Thanks. I agree that the company probably isn't notable, but all that's required to defeat a CSD:A7 deletion is a mere claim of notability. To the contrary, WP:EL encourages links to Hulu. Consider:

  • What should be linked, #2: An article about a book, a musical score, or some other media should link to a site hosting a copy of the work if none of the "Links normally to be avoided" criteria apply. For the type of media that Hulu hosts (film and television, mostly) Hulu usually is the only place on the internet that lawfully hosts a copy of the work. Yes, it's commercial, but for the same reason, no non-commercial website can host a copy of the work, at least not for another 70 years or so before the copyright runs out.
  • Now consider the "Links normally to be avoided" criteria. It passes them all. Hulu provides a unique resource, and will be reliable over the long term. The site is primarily to promote not sell works, has a low level of ads compared to live TV, and doesn't require registration (except for R-rated stuff).
  • Finally, I don't get a penny from Hulu or from NBC-Universal. I'm just doing this because my philosophy of Wikipedia is that it is useless without proof of sources. Citing the original material makes Wikipedia credible. --M@rēino 14:27, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I don't agree with your reasoning, but see your points. To me, this fails the "objectionable amounts of advertising" test. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:31, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Asghar Mohammadi FAZEL, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Asghar Mohammadi FAZEL is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Asghar Mohammadi FAZEL, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Help with SciFi writers of color

Help! You were so helpful before. I was hoping that you could help me again. Since it seems that Wikipedia is using "Science fiction" as an umbrella term to include "Speculative fiction". I think that maybe the category "Speculative fiction writers of color" should to be changed to "Science fiction by writers of color" and the category "Speculative fiction novels by writers of color" to "Science fiction by writers of color" ("Walter Mosley's Futureland should be here, but because it is a collection of short stories it is being left out.) First is my assertion correct and second, how do I do this without going into every book. Is there a better way? --Booksellergirl (talk) 17:03, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your help! I think I got it all done --Booksellergirl (talk) 14:02, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Would love to attend WisCon, but it's a problem of to many Cons to little money. I just gave up my ComicCon money for a Rent Party for a friend. Maybe next year I'll go. WisCon sounds amazing! --Booksellergirl (talk) 14:19, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your continued support. It means a lot to me. This Kevin guy seems a bit like a close-minded jerk. I'm glad that there are people out here like you guarding the hen house, too ;o) Let's hope the that the category doesn't get deleted. I've been telling the guys over at Carl Brandon that we need to get on the ball with this or we will disappear. It seems that I was more prophetic than I realized. There has been a suggestion of a Carl Brandon Wiki. We'll see how that goes. --Booksellergirl (talk) 17:54, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
HA! You gave me my first laugh of the day! This just goes to show something. American may not be what it should be, but its not what it was. We may do some really stupid things sometimes, but we are capable of growth. This place is still worth fighting for. Be well. --Booksellergirl (talk) 18:59, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Revert on Paul Cadmus page

I saw no reason for your deletion of what appears to be a constructive, acceptable link in the external links section, and you didn't have an edit summary or note on the discussion page, so I reverted it. My mind is open and I'm more than willing to discuss it. Noroton (talk) 18:10, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

OK, fair enough. I've reviewed it now and, without any COI, I personally think it should stay, so that should be the end of it. It seems to me it would help if some kind of edit summary, say "removed as per WP:EL", would help. If I have time, I might go over some of that user's edits and review them to see if the added material is useful in each case, but if I do, it will be a slow decision based on whether each edit improves the individual article. That should get around any spam problems and help the 'pedia. I've got no problem with your having removed them. Noroton (talk) 19:12, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I see what you mean. Looking at the context of that quote over at WP:SPAM it seems to me it sounds more like advice than a hard and fast rule. (And we all know plenty of people around here who are pushing their off-Wiki agendas; almost all of those agendas worse than this one.) Given the circumstances here, it seems to me that if you can get Artand to make some specific pledges about following policy and note that he'll be watched, then the encyclopedia would benefit. I tend to be optimistic about newbies who mess up in the beginning. As I said, I'm willing to be available if he wants advice. I'm not an admin and couldn't unblock him in any event. Your call. Noroton (talk) 16:40, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure you're more familiar about this kind of thing than I am. I left another comment on Artand's talk page to clarify. Noroton (talk) 16:50, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Apparently you deleted this article while I was clarifying the context. After uploading the new version, I undeleted the history for attribution purposes. Just letting you know - Christopher Parham (talk) 02:35, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Just so you know, there was an arbitration request on episode articles recently here [1], the conclusion says
It says that there is no consistent precedent or dealing with notability of this sort of articles, so I advice you to be extra-careful on making editions --Enric Naval (talk) 10:15, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Also, Christopher, you don't remove the deletion notice yourself, what you do is adding a {{hangon}} template below it, so it won't get deleted while you improve the article --Enric Naval (talk) 10:18, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Why would I not remove the deletion notice myself? I was only vaguely aware of the arbitration issue however so thank you. I do not believe it is relevant as the page was deleted as nonsense (arguably true at the time) but I do not think my last version could be described as such. Christopher Parham (talk) 11:22, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, the template says that you shouldn't, for a start. This way of doing things probably originated at {{db-reason}}, the father template from where {{db-nonsense}} was created from. It probably comes from some discussion on some admin noticeboard, but I can't find references for it.
The removal could also be considered uncivil. A more proper procedure (but still not totally correct) would adding "hangon", then changing the article and *then* removing the tag if there has been substantial changes, while leaving a message on the talk page explaining why it is notable meets the notability criteria or why it's not nonsense, so other editors won't label it again with the same tag. A totally correct procedure would be improving the article, and then convince the editor that put up the tag to remove it, or convince someone else to do it because of it no longer being adequate, but that's not always possible. Deleting the notice with no explanation anywhere not even on the edit summary would surely be considered uncollaborative, specially if the article is not improved.
(also, consider placing {{stub}} on your new articles so this doesn't happen so often. There is a ton of more specific stubs at Category:Stub_categories that you can use. Other people interesed on the stub type can then see the article on the thematic category and help to improve the article) --Enric Naval (talk) 11:45, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
You can probably use this one on next article {{PowerRangers-stub}}. When added to the article, it will automagically add it to Category:Power_Rangers_stubs --Enric Naval (talk) 11:49, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Silly me, this editor was not the one that created the article, so he could remove the tag with no problem. My bad, I'll pay more attention to the history next time --Enric Naval (talk) 23:42, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
(P.D.: well, at least the stub advice still stands. A stub template on an article can attract editors interested on the theme that will be happy to improve the article, and it can be added to an article created by someone else) --Enric Naval (talk) 23:44, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I was about to remove the csd tag when you deleted it. I don't think it's advertising, since the article talks about a specification by GSM Association, which itself is a trade association and wouldn't be advertising anything. The only thing that to me could sound like marketingese is a direct quote, and presented as such. Would you mind if I undeleted the article? Thanks. - Bobet 14:15, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Foreignness

I've tagged it as needing translation and am just going to do some googling to see if I can find any English information on the topic. If I can't get anywhere with it (at the moment I don't even know what language it is - presume something Scandinavian) I would consider a {{db-foreign}} but I'd like to give it a chance of life first. nancy (talk) 17:54, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Gunnin' For That speedy declined

Hey there Mike, I declined this particular speedy (even though when I see your name in page history, I usually just delete as you seem to always have them right). You said in page history that it was taken from a website and was spammy. Fixable, IMHO. Was it copyvio though? I'll delete based on that alone. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 19:22, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't have a problem with an AFD, but if the assertions made in the article are true (future film, produced by Beastie Boy, etc), and verifiable, I might surprise myself and !vote keep. (and I am by no means even close to being an inclusionist) Thanks for understanding my speedy decline though, either way. Too bad about the article creator. Notability

I am so glad our world has come to that. She's a published author (whom can be found internationally through Amazon.com) and she's not known enough because only her "official site" is offered as a reference. I own her book and thought her worthy of recognition and hoped others could learn of her written works through wikipedia. But apparently the site is not worthy of the critical acclaim it has recieved (I have had friends who've attempted to contribute to Wikipedia to help make it better and have been treated with this "warm welcome" ie "speedy deletion." When you work hard to write up an article with reference that sounds half-way decent and even intelligent and it gets deleted because it's not "notable enough" despite local and national popularity it kind of turns the stomach.) Carrymeaway (talk) 23:15, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

How are they ever to attain notability if people can't spread the word through popular sources (such as wikipedia)? Carrymeaway (talk) 23:23, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Therefore preventing a curious web-surfer from looking up information on someone they may have heard a snip-it of and want to learn more. My personal opinion; it's bull-shit. Carrymeaway (talk) 23:56, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Category:Controversial literature

[moved from above]

Hi Mike, I just left a note at the CFD for Category:Controversial literature explaining why I don't think it should be handled as a Speedy delete. Can you reverse your deletion and allow the full CFD to run its course? Cgingold (talk) 20:17, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello again, Mike -- I was hoping for a reasonably expeditious response. Possibly you didn't notice my question due to the other comment that was left after mine. Anyway, I'd still appreciate a reply. Thanks. Cgingold (talk) 02:15, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, Mike. And more importantly, thank you for taking my request for "procedural justice" seriously. It may seem odd, given that I was the person who asked for the category to be deleted in the first place, but I feel strongly about adhering to the fine points of deletion procedures. Do you have any idea how & why King of Hearts jumped in two hours later and re-deleted it? Cgingold (talk) 13:26, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

I have contested your request for speedy deletion. If you still feel that the article subject is fatally non-notable, I urge you to instead nominate the article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. --M@rēino 14:52, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Mike, I have declined to delete this and removed t he speedy tag, as I also have from Vincent Klyn. I do not know whether either of these people are actually notable.I do know that saying someone is an actor or a film editor in many films is an unmistakable clear assertion at least of some possible good-faith importance. if the editor role was not significant, or if the parts were all bit parts, then the people might not pass WP:N, but that has to be tested at AfD. Speedy does not apply if you think the importance was insufficient, as long as there is some importance asserted. There have been recent calls for the elimination of category A7 altogether, ad it is taggings like this which encourage such requests. I think we need A7, and therefore should use it carefully and properly, and urge you to be more careful here to follow the text of WP:CSD, which expresses WP:Deletion policy. DGG (talk) 15:16, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
similarly ". She represented Nigeria in Miss World" as for Matilda Kerry is an assertion of what can reasonably be thought notability. I'm not sure what I would vote on it at AfD,but it needs to go there if you want to delete it. DGG (talk) 15:21, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I know you weren't talking to me, but just to inform you, Vincent Klyn *IS* a notable person, as he not only was a very famous surfer in his day, but also played the main villain in the very popular (at least where I come from) sci-fi action-movie Cyborg, and also has appeared in a lot of other movies having major parts, especially in those directed by Albert Pyun.KnatLouie (talk) 20:08, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Deleted content out-of-process

I went to a fair amount of effort to get some of my favorite deleted articles restored to my userspace so that I could improve them or find a good home for them. Userfication of deleted content is explicitly permitted -- see Wikipedia:Userfication#Userfication_of_deleted_content -- but you have not only deleted these articles but have done so entirely outside of process and without ever notifying me. You have forced me to spend more of my valuable time scanning redlinks. Please restore all of these or add them to the ongoing discussion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Tlogmer subpages.

Here is the list of pages, as far as I can tell:

- Tlogmer ( talk / contributions ) 04:07, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Tlogmer message, these should be restored and added to that deletion debate. --Enric Naval (talk) 11:43, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

DoubleJay Creative restoration

OM-- I created a new page for DoubleJay Creative in the sandbox you made for me. It MORE than fulfills notability guidelines (with 2 dozen external links!) and I took all the marketing-speak out like you suggested. So, will you put it up? Or tell me how to? Thanks a lot--

Dingstersdie (talk) 15:17, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Seriously, come on... (DJC)

"A company, corporation, organization, team, religion, group, product, or service is notable if it has been the subject of coverage in secondary sources." "The organization’s longevity, size of membership, or major achievements, or other factors specific to the organization may be considered."

I don't really know how to reply to your comment that a lot of the links are about their clients, since that's just blatantly untrue. Many of the articles reference specific projects that DJC has worked on or accomplished, but how do you think a production company gets press except through recognition of their projects? Additionally, even IF you remove those from the equation, there are numerous articles where company employees are interviewed and DJC is the main focus of the piece-- more than enough, again, to meet notability guidelines. You seem to have a prejudice against allowing small companies into the Wiki, but seriously, how much more notable can a small company get than national coverage, numerous awards (including an Emmy) and and cover story in the local alt-weekly? Finally, I'll again reference you to AC Entertainment as an example of another notable local business which has been allowed to stay, even with few references, while mine, with TWO DOZEN good references, is continually deleted.

It's a good article. I don't understand why you have such a need to keep it out. If, after rereading the notability guidelines and my responses, you still feel it's not notable, I wish you would tell me how to start a review or talk to some other admin. I am grateful you volunteer your time here but I think that by being such a stickler, it discourages people from contributing.

Dingstersdie (talk) 15:44, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

There's nothing to stop you from posting the article as it stands. I repeat, I'll give you 3:1 odds that if you do, it won't last a week. We don't care if a company is mentioned in an article; we need articles about the company itself. We have a major problem now with too many articles about tiny companies like this which confuse local "Emmies" with a national Emmy, etc. And again: if you feel AC Entertainment is no more notable than DoubleJay, then nominate them for deletion as non-notable; WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS is not a valid argument for retention of an article. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:51, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
I went back and looked at the links and found six of them where the article was either fully about DJC or at least substantially about them and their involvement with a project. So I'm throwing it up there. As long as you're not determined to pull it down, I'll take my chances. Thanks for your help, Dingstersdie (talk) 16:02, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

notability of doublejay

He is put awards like Aegis and Daveys, which look like a place where you pay to get a nice award and a place on a list of winners. To answer your comment I do agree that third party sources are best when available. However, I personally feel wikipedia's policy on the need for third party sources all the time is somewhat un-necessary as often times News Organizations use a first party web sites as a source in their own reporting. I know this having written for magazines and newspapers myself and knowing people who work in media. What advantage would a professional organization have in lying about themselves on their own website? Also, in the case of this company all media sources I found were pretty much reviews of individual productions and did not really delve much into the overall history of the company. Furthermore, sometimes third party sources get things wrong. Which would you trust more, the New York Times article or the company's own website if say the New York Times fudged a date or a name? It happens all the time. Most times it is the newspaper that fudged the info and not the other way around. But anyway, I like to play by wikipedia's rules as much as possible which is why I think the tags are there. Hopefully someone else can dig up some better sources. But for now I think what is there is fine.Nrswanson (talk) 05:30, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh there is tons of media review on productions. Dozens and dozens of reviews done by the New York Times, New York Post, Opera News, etc. That is the thing with opera companies. The media is more interested in the shows they produce than in the actual organization itself. See my problem.Nrswanson (talk) 05:38, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
If you look above I already cited Opera News. I am sure they did review the company at some point but the articles are not currently available online and I will have to go to the library hunting through microfich. Like I said, the references are there. Just takes a little digging. But better to start the article and get people interested enough to care and do research than not create/ delete the page and have it never exist.Nrswanson (talk) 05:51, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
I've expanded the article and referenced it, to within an inch of its life.;-) Best, Voceditenore (talk) 11:34, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Eamon McEneaney

On March 26, you deleted a page for Eamon McEneaney with the comments: "Real person; doesn't indicate importance/significance: db|Non-notable 9/11 victim." Since this is a page I watch, I am surprised it was deleted without it appearing in my watchlist if/when tagged. Neither is it mentioned in the page creators talk page (User talk:10stone5). McEneaney notability was as a lacrosse player. He was a 9/11 victim, yes, but notable since he was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, was awarded prestigeous NCAA lacrosse awards while at Cornell. My recollection was that this was all cited in detail on the page. I am requesting that you re-instate this article. If you think there are issues that need to be addressed, please let me know. Electromagnetic thingy!

Hi Orangemike. I've removed the speedy delete because I'm activelly working on this article. Thank you for your help. --CyclePat (talk) 04:55, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I've removed the In use template since I'm done working on the article for now. Thank you again for your help in this matter. Feel free to work on the article since there should now be sufficient references to easily improve it's context, which is b.t.w. probably sufficient to no longer meet the criteria CSD A1, meaning it is perhaps time to remove the speedy delete template? --CyclePat (talk) 05:47, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi, I've recently updated the article Electro-magnetic therapeutic system and the AFD debate for this article. Since I've apparently rebuted your arguments (The device even made noted in a trial at Supreme Court of Canada)I was wondering if you would reconsider changing your vote to keep. Surelly it's a notable subject! Thank you. --CyclePat (talk) 23:26, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion of Doctor Steel

I do understand as an admin, you wish to keep Wikipedia free of spam/malicious content. However, I do feel the speedy deletion of an article I created, Doctor Steel, was unnecessary. Doctor Steel is a notable person in the music industry. He has been interviewed many times, and has even appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Lenno, and has fans numbering in the tens of thousands. If my article is being deleted due to lack of content, please tell me what I can do to make it acceptable by Wikipedia standards. Aridnyk89 (talk)

Doctor Steel's Talk Page

I thank you for your consideration in keeping the page, however the talk portion of the page is currently protected, so I cannot edit or claim my case in the notability of the artist. Please help me. Aridnyk89 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 13:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

I do appreciate the time you've spent on helping me clean up my Wiki entry, I know you don't need to do this, and can just delete it if seen fit, so I thank you. I hope to bring the article to your satisfactory. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aridnyk89 (talkcontribs) 14:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of NetBox Blue

Hello Orange Mike. I wrote the article for NetBox Blue and it was deleted because it was deemed to be advertising. I am aware that you are undoubtedly a busy bloke, but I was wondering if you could give me some pointers to help me write it a little better, that won't get it deleted again? I have had the content restored. I am reading through other entries in wikipedia, and trying to model it similar to theirs, but I'm finding it difficult to do. Any Help would be mucho appreciated. Thanks again. --Mickyounger (talk) 00:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Notability of Rox3n

I am surprised at the "Speedy deletion" tag for the Rox3n article. Going by your userpage, i get a feeling that you have taken a liking for inserting this tag on various pages which might be relevant in certain cases.

However, the use of the tag on the above mentioned article isnt warranted especially after a newspaper has been quoted for notability. Also, the band is an upcoming music group in India & Pakistan & is of significant interest to many users as can be seen by their entries on various wiki pages (especially on pakistani music groups & upcoming talent in music of the subcontinent)

Thx.  Đõc §aмέέЯ  22:40, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for help with SF writers of color category

Thanks for the help. I am new to editing Wiki (although I use it all the time). I think that a category for Spec. Fic books from writers of color should be created also. I'll be looking at the rules (and trying to understand them all) on how to do this. Thanks a lot. -Booksellergirl (talk)

Hi Mike, they deleted "Category:Science fiction by writers of color" and have slated to be deleted "Category:Science fiction writers of color". I think that I'm done with this project. I'll consider it a success that I got several books into Wikipedia that weren't there before such as "Dark Matter" and "Bloodchild". I can't thank you enough for your support during this effort. Maybe we will meet at WisCon sometime. -- Booksellergirl (talk) 20:02, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Those protected Philippine radio station articles

You'll have to go to Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Pinoybandwagon for the full ugly story of the mess which this represents. Basically, a COI guy in the Philippines, with one or more each of sockpuppets and meatpuppets, has decided that every Philippine radio station has to have a separate article for each new advertising/brandname it has used throughout its history. He has rewritten the naming conventions for radio stations there; has moved, removed, deleted and redeleted, etc., until the GFDL history is probably a hellish nausea of tangled spaghetti almost impossible to trace. (I'm not even going to get into the NPOV and possible BLP violations in the articles he writes.) --Orange Mike | Talk 23:53, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

I saw that SSP page but it looks like a trainwreck.

Kronos Incorporated page

You marked this as advertisement speak AND also that I have a conflict of interest in creating these pages.

  • The page shows factual and referenced facts about Kronos as well as a list of products and industries that Kronos does business in. It's not unlike anything that Oracle, Dell or Adobe do. Kronos is a very large corporate software company as well. I don't see any advertisement content here that should be flagged.
  • As far as me having a COA, I was asked to create the page for Kronos and I also am employed by Kronos as a web developer. I haven't hid this as even the email I use is @kronos.com. I was sure to be putting up factual referencable content only and nothing spammy or advertisement like. Wouldn't you agree Orangemike? --Ken Savage (talk) 18:53, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Nisi Shawl page: wikification and citations?

Hi -- I'm Jed Hartman, a WisCon regular; I've seen you there lots of times but I don't know if we've ever met in person. (I've also been a low-volume Wikipedia editor for a while, and I sometimes try to smooth out interactions between the sf community and Wikipedia.) The following is meant in a friendly and cooperative tone, but I'm trying to be brief so I apologize if it ends up sounding brusque.... I was just talking with Nisi Shawl, who was concerned about the wikify and citation-needed templates that you put on the Wikipedia article about her. It looks to me like the article is pretty heavily wikified already, though I can see a few items I can imagine adding links to; and I wasn't clear on what you wanted to see cited--is the issue that the citations are formatted incorrectly (I can fix that), that some of the citations are to her home page, or that there are items that should be cited but that aren't? I tried to drop you a note in email, going into more detail with these questions, but the email address on your home page bounced. So could you either drop me a note in email (logos@kith.org), or put some comments in the Talk page for the article about Nisi, to clarify the templates? Thanks! --Elysdir (talk) 04:34, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Fedogan & Bremer

Hi - I noticed that you changed the publisher of Frost in the Donald Wandrei article from "F & B Mystery" to Fedogan & Bremer Mystery". I'm going to change it back. F & B Mystery is an imprint of Fedogan & Bremer and I have noted that in the Fedogan & Bremer article which F & B Mystery redirects to. My reason for changing it back is that the title page of the book actually only uses the initials. In fact the only way the publisher is listed on the title page with their logo. The Chalker/Owings reference doesn't make a distinction for Frost and it is listed in the Fedogan & Bremer section, however they do explain the imprint and list it as "F & B Mystery" in their entry on The Last Pin. The Locus index [2] lists the publisher as "Fedogan & Bremer/F&B Mystery". In any case, it looks like it's just F&B when referring to the imprint, which is why I'm changing it back. If you disagree, please let me know. I just didn't want to undo your edit without an explanation.--Rtrace (talk) 13:59, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

This fact from the Radiosmasher is TRUE:

If the official call sign has a prefix (DW- and DZ- in Luzon, DY- in Visayas, DX- in Mindanao), a redirect or disambiguation should be added for the call sign without the prefix. For stations which do not have a prefix, place the broadcast years in parentheses; for example, "DWRT (1976-2006)". See Radiosmasher for more information on assignment practices.

Brand names such as "Net 25", "UNTV" or "99.5 Campus FM" are very often unique. Even though "Campus Radio Baguio" or "Wild FM Davao" are not appropriate article titles, a brand name may, however, be created as Radio Station and its Dial (Ex. 92.7 "Campus Radio" or "Dream 106.7") page where appropriate.

Radiosmasher (talk) 16:22, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

I am aware that you have rewritten the Phillipine Radio Stations portion of the naming conventions in this bizarre and inappropriate manner. I am sorry about it, but it's not important enough to me to fight you. I regret, however, that this kind of nonsense goes on. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:41, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

No, he is not my client. I am a 43 year old mother of 2 in San Francisco and I have no connection at all. My 16 year old son lives in Nashville and heard about this kid Simon Bruce. I contacted the girl who made his webpage and asked since she wrote the bio could she make the wikipage page account and upload it because she had all the copywrites and of course I wanted to comply (i have had my own account for 3 years). It was shut down the minute she put it up and I have been on here trying to comply with all the requests to make the page right. I have no conflict of interest, I was just trying to get the sources of the copywrites to upload it themselves.

I had thought it would be better for them to do it than for me to do it. Would it be better for me to make this page under my own established account then, and get many people to request the page?

--Sarahmckem (talk) 16:15, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

govt organisations

OM, I think you're slightly over-skeptical about the importance of various government and related organizations. A major national agency has a significant role in its field of operation, and an article about it can in my opinion certainly be said to indicate importance, at least enough to pass speedy. After seeing a request at WP:RFUP, I'm curious as to why you've got this page fully protected, including cascading protection. Slovenia

I agree some of them were a little over ambitious as yes the template was translated from slovenian wiki (and now greatly reduced), but the lists serve a great purpose in that they are intended to serve as a platform to generate new articles on and highlight what is missing. If you want to move them to the WikProject Europe/Slovenia project space I have no problems, but there's no reason why we couldn't have developed lists within sensibility for other countries too. As for notability several SLovenian editors have ever stricter rules for notability than I have -please see the List of Slovenian architects which was whittled down to the most notable etc by a SLovenian editor on here who is rather better equipped to make judgements on what is notable than you or I are and doesn't display exaggerated patriotism as is depicted. please assume good faith here that we are trying to build an encyclopedia with notable content which will greatly improve the site eventually. As for myself the creator of this template exerting Slovene patriotism, I am about as un-Slovene as you can get. Zappa is great -of course one of my heroes Steve Vai worked with him for years. What I was trying to say it is that that singer is huge in my country and has still toured the world but probably most people in the U.S haven't heard of her but does this mean she isn't notable for wikipedia? I'm sure there are many Slovene people missing who are equally famous in their own countries but should these be discluded? I remain confident that when the lists are filtered like here, we will have a list of notable people and not just an overblown dump base of any name related to the subjects. I found her to be a very accomplished and interesting journalist and wanted to add her to Wikipedia that is when I noticed she previously had a page and that's when I made the effort to have it reinstated and am now trying to correct all the mistakes someone previously made. It is not as easy as I thought so if you have any suggestions I would appreciate the help. Mlreynol (talk) 17:02, 9 April 2008 (UTC) taken to your talk page

Response to your message to me, WikPedGuy

I resent your assertion that my account is "single ____ (whatever your called it). My Wikipedia login dates from 2006. I visit many websites on various topics, but seldom contribute. Michelle Malkin's extremely popular site has been the target of vandalism, so she has established a group of pre-registered contributors, and I haven't pursued joining that group. Far too much of my time is spent on the Internet already. But, the Absolut reconquista ad was so galling, and so wrong-headed, that when I found the topic on Wikipedia, there was the motivation to get involved. On another note, now that this experience is under my belt, maybe I'll pursue correcting the error noted long ago, in the Wiki article about the Telesis Tower building in San Francisco. OVerus speedy

I think I did the right thing in retagging it as a speedy, even with the AfD ongoing. The author was told what to fix, where we had issues, yet continued on his merry way without acknowledging most of them. Maybe I bit, but when a brand new editor says he needs to bring in his attorneys to edit the article, something doesn't sit right. I hope the AfD closes out soon before I wake up to a stack of hate mail. :) DarkAudit (talk) 05:06, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Science fiction article

Mike, I saw that you are a member of WP:SF and having crossed paths with you several times, I thought I'd ask for your thoughts. I just created Psychic probe, and desipite it being fairly entrenched in the Asimov universe, a google search lead me to believe that it isn't much elsewhere, or at least not sourced. Do you have any suggestions for how to beef up an article that I think could be better than a simple stub? Thanks in advance. —ScouterSig 15:28, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion of Morningstar Christian Fellowship

I don't understand how the page for Morningstar Christian Fellowship will be considered blatant advertising when there are pages for other large churches such as the Hillsong Church in Australia. In addition, I don't see how a "conflict of interest" would be of any concern to a wikipedia article on a church. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mav-TGIF (talkcontribs) 18:46, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion of goSupermodel

My article about the international community website goSupermodel was speedy deleted within 12 hours. I may not have included enough secondary sources to prove its notability, but I still think that a user base of over 4,000,000 registered users worldwide in 11 countries made it noteworthy (compared to other sites listed on List of social networking websites).

Should I re-add it at a later time with more sources? - I really find it notable, especially for young girls!

Thanks for making the new page for Centurion, I didn't know how and I was getting frustrated at (I guess it was you) whoever was changing the information back to the other writer even though it was linked from Scarrow's page. regarding your speedy delete of Fred Toucher

I'm not going to disagree with your decision to delete the article, as there was a lack of qualifying information therein (at least, in the last version of the article that I saw). However, I do question the reasoning behind the "speedy delete" of the piece, considering Fred was mentioned in today's NYPost's Page 6 column. Perhaps a normal deletion proposal would have allowed such notoriety/significance to be added to the article. Other items of note that he has been involved with include the recent "Iron My Shirt" psuedo-protest at Hillary Clinton's Boston stop that made world-wide news, and an on-again, off-again public feud with director Kevin Smith. The article may have sucked and may have qualified for deletion, but certainly not a speedy delete. RadioBoy2003 (talk) 23:18, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, but I want to be clear that my comment was not regarding your decision to complete the deletion process based on the information that was present in the article, but that the article should not have been speedy-deleted; that is, it should have had the opportunity to go through the standard review process and let those editors who were interested do their job to add the appropriate information to the piece to give it a chance not to be deleted. If you look at the edit history of who proposed the speedy, they went through and marked a ton of radio-related articles with the speedy tag almost without care, as opposed to having the articles on subjects that have appeared on CNN (as an example) go through the normal deletion review. I appreciate that you took a moment to follow-up with what I posted above, but we both know that just because something didn't appear on your radar or appears to be 15-minutes of fame from your vantage point doesn't mean that it wasn't more significant or notable in other parts of the world. Anyway, thank you again for your reply and taking the time to consider that perhaps "speedy" wasn't the best deletion proposal for all those that were tagged that day. RadioBoy2003 (talk) 01:56, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm not overly concerned; if he behaves uncivilly towards other users I'll deem it a breach and seek more action, but for now it's simply not worth my neuron activity that for deletion. That's in fact been updated almost daily for more than 2 years, but magically bypasses your "it's just a closed beta game" clause. If you insist that I tag 50+ articles for deletion, all of which would warrant it of course, just to prove the point of this simple article, I'll gladly oblige. Thanks for your time and consideration. --EABoz (talk) 16:36, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Dear Orangemike, it appears that you have deleted the above-mentioned entry without having the courtesy of first letting me know about your intention, let alone action. I hope that you did not fancy that I wrote that entry because I had nothing better to do with my time. About an hour ago I wrote extensively on the subject matter to User:Stifle, so that I shall be very brief here and ask you to be kind enough and restore that entry without delay. In the event that you feel disinclined to do so, please ask yourself a number of questions before possibly coming back to me with reasons in defence of your action. Firstly, did you know the meaning of the word Bāgh? Secondly, can you name a single dictionary in which this word is defined? For completeness, neither OED, nor SOED, nor Chambers, nor Mirriam-Webster have Bāgh as entry. Thirdly, how many times does Google hit the word Bāgh? Fourthly, how many sites define the word and give its historical evolution? After having answered these questions, you may finally ask the following question from yourself: Should Wikipedia accommodate an entry concerning Bāgh? After all, with the word being so prevalent, some people might just wonder what it might possibly mean. I note in passing that, the entry already had several Wikipedia links attached to it, both inwardly and outwardly. May I also request you to be kind enough and consult some other people on the subject matter? For this you may consider to contact User:Stifle and User:JohnCD (the latter was the first to tag the entry for deletion, some five minutes after the creation of the entry — the entry he tagged had half the size of the entry that you so mercilessly deleted, in total disregard of my short note in its talk page). As for I, I believe that I have already spent too much of my time on the subject matter; I would prefer to have the entry restored without needing to spend one more word. With kind regards, --BF 19:32, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Dear Orangemike, thank you for your message and the good-will gesture. I disagree with your judgement that the entry were not suitable for Wikipedia; I strongly believe that the natural home of this entry is Wikipedia, since it acts as a centre of information for so many references to the word Bāgh within the Wikipedia itself, this as testified by the existence of a manifold of links into and out of this entry. As for Wiktionary, I should point out that I have also a life outside these pages and cannot see myself ever getting involved in yet another Wiki project (if you happened to have read my remark in the upper part of my talk page, then you will have realised that my very being on Wikipedia already hangs by a very thin thread). Consequently, if you get the entry deleted from English Wikipedia, it will get lost for ever, for I simply have not got the time even to transfer the thing to Wikitionary (given what is happening, I have also not got the motivation). The choice is yours: either you kindly restore the entry to its original status as a Wikipedia entry, or you put the question to general vote. Your present suggestion is simply not acceptable to me, even though in contrast to what you might have thought, I had never accused you of acting maliciously (in fact any doubt that I might have entertained about you, were dissipated when I saw your photograph on your Wikipedia page; you simply do not have the looks of a malicious person, this in addition to the fact that all the Mikes that I have ever known, have proved to be nice and fun-loving people). For completeness, I had never read your explanation (even as of now I have not read it), since the only thing that I knew was that the entry had gone missing, without any trace. It was User:Stifle (a very fine Wikipedia editor) who on my request helped me identifying you as the person responsible for the deletion of the entry. Trusting that you will reconsider your earlier decision, With kind regards, --BF 21:00, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
ps) I see that you are a Quaker. My former teacher, Volker Heine, is also a Quaker and through him I am somewhat familiar with Quakerism; later I read a brief history of Quakerism, by MD Murry-Rust whose writing style very much reminded me of Volker Heine. WHY???it's so fast

Excuse me sir but I am just making the article of Ranchers' Club Ph. I have asked other members to edit this. I just posted it now, like a couple of minutes ago. I am still working on it. Why suddenly tagged for speedy deletion? Why not check Rodeo Club Philippines. They are the exact copy of our organization. Aren't you giving us the chance to cite references and notes? One of your admin members talked to me about this and said he wants to see references and notes and significant editing. Your tag was so fastJhei ann (talk) 00:41, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Ranchers'

I've already moved it. Honestly, this is my 3rd attempt to rebuild it. I am just asking help from other members so they can give me references but it seems that they are all too busy so I am having a hard time editing it. I think this club is important in the history of UPLB since it is the first organization there. I am wondering about the other club I mentioned. To tell you the truth, they copied almost everything- constitution, hymn, letters, files,etc.- from our club.Of course it is hard to prove here but I have seen a lot of piracy from them. So, why is their page or article not tagged even once. I am starting to think that the admin is biased.Jhei ann (talk) 01:49, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

The Skyrockets Update 04

--Sherif Mansour (talk) 19:01, 12 April 2008 (UTC) Dear Orange Mike, It appears that the BBC article I've mentioned before was correct, even though it was a "passing mention" the skyrockets were in fact in a Youseff Chahine movie (for more on this character http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youssef_Chahine) he is one of the legends of the Arabic cinema and that particular movie was significant (in its controversy and artistic merit, as stated in the BBC article)...anyhow that’s not the point. The point is, the skyrockets article went down because there was not enough "verifiable evidence". Should I buy you a copy of the movie? What do need to do to get this article back up online? I don't understand when it went down in the first place as the warning clearly said we have a year to sort it out and I've been asking for your input every time I add a piece of info. In any case the band was in a Youseff Chahine movie that is verifiable evidence. Please advise me as to how I can convince you that they existed? Except for the signed contracts, the advertisements and the live recording? The movie is called Cairo Station.

Re: Persistent misunderstanding Mike, your last post was the first to mention anything about notability. The concern for deletion was verification and third party references.

Historically they are the first rock and roll band in Egypt (I can't find any other earlier on record). they paved the way for other acts like the Bell Boys and Le Petite Chat. The were registered between 1957-1962 (officially) while former band members kept the name and played internationally until roughly 1968 but thats largely undocumented. The period between 1957-1962 however is!

They were a live band. The live recording on their site is the only known one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sherif Mansour (talkcontribs) 18:47, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

"freedom from the English"? You do realise that politically we're the most over-represented people on the planet? Add to that the West Lothian question, the much greater public spending here (which is funded by the English taxpayer), free university attendance, free elderly care (all due to generous redistribution of wealth from down South, they don't have those privileges). I mean, freedom? Come on. The Act of Union of 1707 wasn't a surrender, it was the formation of the Union that has made Britain great. I certainly don't want to pay tuition fees! Speedy Deletion question

Hi Mike! This morning I wrote an article about a nationally recognized and very large professional organization, AASECT. I only put in facts and quotes from their mission statemtent (quoted and credited to them, of course), but it was flagged for speedy deletion for "advertising". After rereading it, I added a couple more quotation marks to make it clear that I wasn't using language to promote the organization in any way, just that the questionable language (according to another user) was directly from their mission statement. I used the pages from other professional organizations as a guideline, and I'm still not seeing the issue. It wasn't the longest or most complete article, so I marked it as a stub. Can you tell me what was objectionable about the article? I don't really want to take the time to write other articles if their just going to get deleted.

Thank so much for any input! Sarah Sarah Paterson (talk) 18:24, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I can see that adding more from other sources might be appropriate, but including an organization's mission statement wouldn't be? Is it just that I should be adding more to the page so that there are other citations/references? This was one of the reasons that I put that the article was a stub, but if it's nonexistant it's somewhat difficult to add to later (I guess I'm unsure of the point of stub articles then?) Is there some way of saving pages that you're working on so that you can finish them later instead? Sorry, I'm new here an many things about wiki seem a bit clunky (like this way of communicating rather than a messaging system). I'm not trying to advertise, certainly, but it seems very odd to not have a page for the certifying organization for sex educators, sex counselors, and sex therapists...I was using the American Library Association as a guideline since they are the certifying organization for librarians and almost all of the citations on that page are also from the ALA itself. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I don't see how using someone else's version of an organizations mission statement is ok rather than using the actual wording in the bylaws because that's considered "advertising"? I would think just putting factual statements and no opinions would be about as unbiased as one could get. Thanks for any help! Sarah Sarah Paterson (talk) 19:23, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok then, I've requested that someone else write an article about it and I'll just skip writing about organizations. Thanks! Sarah Sarah Paterson (talk) 19:57, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Editing User:Bearian page

Possibly uncivil behavior noted, but as I've yet to see it formally noted anywhere in Wikipedi I must chalk that up to personal preference.

As for the grammatical edit, The Chicago Manual of Style notes that, while the original form may be technically correct, if it is offensive to the reader's eye the form should be altered if an equivalent form is more pleasing. But, whatever floats the boat. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rpchurch (talkcontribs) 21:08, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm still not getting it. Were you referring to this?

Other users may edit pages in your user space, although by convention your user page will usually not be edited by others.

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I feel this is far too general a guideline by which to deem behavior uncivil. In addition, I was simply attempting to do something I would hope someone would do for me.

No offense was intended. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rpchurch (talkcontribs) 21:19, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Any chance you could take a look at this 'article' - Finance academy Study Abroad Program. I have twice tagged it for speedy deletion as spam, and the author has twice removed the deletion tag. FIREFLY

just to make sure i am understanding the process correctly and you seem like the guy who would know... i added a comment to the FIREFLY page that the basic premise of the evacuation of earth and human refugees is also used in the joss whedon/ben edlund-written TITAN AE. i wouldn't have included this had the same creative team not been involved (say, the premise was used in another movie or book twenty years ago). i believe this is intersting information the same way larry cohen wrote both CELLULAR and PHONE BOOTH or michael crichton wrote JURASSIC PARK and WESTWORLD, both works that use the same premise in different ways.

please explain what qualifies as a valid source? can any monkey make a website that references the same information and i can use that regardless of their credentials? that seems somewhat shoddy. i am referencing events explained in the synopsis of both wikipedia pages and explained in the first five minutes of both films, not trying to draw and conclusions.

i trust you assume some responsibility for this page and you'll do what's correct but i would like to know how these matters are dealt with for future reference.

URL Blacklisting

Thanks for the info, I took it up on the requests page and was told the same thing - not that I was surprised. Unfortunately in this case I believe Wiki users are disadvantaged. For my forum is hosted for free by Invision, I cannot afford a domain name, a proper webhost or to advertise. Many people have benefitted from my forum, and tell me their astonishment on having discovered a still active DK community. I'll have to make a proper website soon.

By the way, your name "Orange Mike" is very unsuitable for your claims for a United Ireland. I'd also like to say: mind your own business - in relation to your apparent desire for a United Ireland and an indepedent Scotland. BonnieDonny (talk) 19:33, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I accept the Wikipedia stance despite some reservations. But you're delluded if you think the Orange Order is a vehicle for Irish republicanism. And Protestants in favour of a united Ireland? Maybe a few, but you'll have a few Catholics in support of the Union. As for the tricolour, well the idea of peace between the two communities was a nice one, but when you see that flag being waved by IRA terrorists and sympathisers you realise that it is all bullshit. I have no idea what your Manx wife has to do with this. Americans like you are just what Sinn Fein and their paramilitary wing needed during the Troubles - you were taken in by the idea of a "revolution" against those "nasty Brits", but what it really was was murder and suffering and pain (a lot of which was funded by Yanks). I'm sure 9-11 changed a lot of Americans' views on Northern Ireland, and so it should, but it speaks wonders for American empathy when your wife or your kids have to be blown up by terrorists before you concede terrorism is wrong. Rant over. BonnieDonny (talk) 20:53, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Sounds a rather dull read to me. Why do you care about Northern Ireland and Scotland leaving the UK? Why not Cornwall as well, whilst you're at it? BonnieDonny (talk) 22:24, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, now I'm starting to agree with the crazy guy who wants to vandalise your page. I'm fed up with ignorant yanks with Irish and Braveheart fetishes who think they know what's good for the rest of the world. Plastic Paddies are perhaps the most annoying, especially when they're so dumb that they profess a love for the colour orange - despite its obvious loyalist connotations (just take the CAIN website > symbols > Unionist and Loyalist). Oh, and get a shave. Apologies for the ad hominem, though I'm not really that sorry! Good night, Josephine. BonnieDonny (talk) 22:49, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Ama Sumani

Can you explain the rationale for speedy deleting Ama Sumani? The article was developed beyond stub status, and being that her case was brought up for national debate in the UK (via the Lancet and various clergymen, along with news coverage lasting several cycles) it seems to me it clears the hurdle of asserting significance. I concede there may be an issue with WP:BIO1E, but that sounds like an issue for AFD to decide. hateless 22:06, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Re Ellisys page

Hello OrangeMike;
Thanks for helping with this page. Sorry, I'm new to Wikipedia and trying to make this an appropriate posting. Unfortunately, like many technology areas, this is a new field and there aren't too many references that can be added. This technology is too new to be in textbooks. The page is notable because the term "Ellisys" is starting to be recognized (although techies aren't exactly sure what it means, hence the posting) and because of the novel testing approaches introduced by the company. Your suggestions welcomed; and I'll see what I can do.

Read WP:POINT. Misuse of our civility (or any other) policies in order to score "points" against another editor is inappropriate and disruptive. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:21, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

I would suggest that you make that comment toward Wikidemo also, otherwise you are getting involved in a dispute between two editors and are attempting to intimidate me into backing down from from my contention that Wikidemo needs to engage in civil behavior also. Please read the rules for civility yourself.--InaMaka (talk) 13:33, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry this has spilled over to your talk page. InaMaka apparently copied the above discussion from my page to make some kind of point. He fixated on me and began to insert random pot shots in the middle of other people's discussions, after I reverted his attempt to insert a salacious degree of detail about a DUI arrest in a BLP article. The tit-for-tat argumentation style and parroting civility warnings and appeals to policy without really understanding them is familiar. I wonder if that's just the standard operating procedure for tendentious editors, or if we perhaps have a sock who has done this before under a different guise. I'm hoping he got the message and will stop trying to harass me after the squawking has died down. Thanks for noticing and, again, sorry if some of this trouble rubs off on you. Wikidemo (talk) 16:11, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Remember it requires two people for "tit-for-tat" arguments to continue. Wikidemo has obviously been participating also. I'm hoping that Wikidemo has got the message and he engages in more civil behavior.--InaMaka (talk) 17:57, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Please review Gary's edits. There were a few somewhat positive (or at least non-negative) edits early one, but now all the account does is waste everyone's time. I or someone else ends up reverting every edit. My question is: should this account get a longer term block (say a month) or should it get an indef block for persistent vandalism? I left a nice polite message, which didn't help. I'm very frustrated with Gary, so I thought that I should have someone else look this situation over. Royalbroil 14:39, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for dealing with Gary. I felt too biased against him to make a fair assessment because I spent time trying to work with him (which now feels like a complete waste of time). Whenever I approach you for a second/unbiased opinion, like I did this time, I want you to do what you think is just (like you did) and not pander to my opinion or suggestions. I'm able to stand up for myself (ofcourse) and I'm not scared to use the ban hammer. Royalbroil 20:14, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
To followup, the user got an indef block because of the vandalism and because they kept leaving unblock requests. I'm watching a probably sock who will get an indef if they do anything more on those same lines. Royalbroil 15:45, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Ummmm, why are you deleting so many pages?

I made a page on one of my favourite authors, who has written a substantial amount of books and is in the process of making one of them into a movie. You deleted my first ever article, on which I spent ages writing, proof reading, adding referances and checking the guidelines for, and then I posted it, pleased with myself. I know Mr Lewis but I only spoke breifly about his family and personal life. Lots of authors pages are available on wikipedia, and I enclose a link to kevin lewis' site - http://www.kevinlewisonline.com/ and google - www.google.com , which incase you try to delete that, is a search engine for you to look up Kevin Lewis on. I now have to rewrite the unsaved document and find all the information again, unless you'd care to do it for me. I'm very upset and confused, and a reply would be nice. Thank you. ps - some PEOPLE on wikipedia, who are just people. You might want to delete them aswell: The queen of england, JK rowling, Awful Tony Blair, Pathetic George Bush - your hero, Jesus, EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE ABOUT A PERSON ON WIKIPEDIA. I prove my point. Please retract the deletion or write a new article based on the site. Yours annoyed, (Hamsterdowns (talk) 21:32, 30 April 2008 (UTC))

I strongly disagree with your speedy deletion of Charles Augustus Hilton, the rationale for which you claimed was A7: no assertion of notability. That's precisely what many at the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Charles Augustus Hilton were debating: whether or not the article's claim to Hilton, New York being named after the subject made the subject notable enough for inclusion. By speedy deleting, you unilaterally made a decision that was contested in the same AFD that you posted in. I ask you to please reconsider your deletion of this page, as this was rather an abrupt and unexpected end to an ongoing community discussion. —  scetoaux (T|C) 21:43, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Re: The film is not notable, as far as I can see...

American Drug War: The Last White Hope won first place in four consecutive film festivals and was picked up by Showtime to air for the next two years. It's also currently airing on Australia's Foxtel channel. Esai Morales brought up the film on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher and his comments were the focus of a segment on Bill O'Reilly's Fox News show. All of this except for the festibal awards has happened in the last month or so. The film features interviews with numerous prominent individuals and is being privately shown in theaters by activist groups around the country. I understand that the previous page for color blind racism was a pos, but I don't plan on making empty promises for 4 months or whatever that guy did. FYI

Landover Baptist Church needs a revert again, someone made it out to be a real church. - 72.227.27.136 (talk) 05:03, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

I noticed the message you recently left to a newcomer. Please remember to try not to bite the newcomers. If you see someone make a common mistake, try to politely point out what they did wrong and how to correct it. Thank you.

Once again, another newbie appears on wikipedia, creates an article and you slap them straight in the face with a "speedy delete". What sort of impression do you think this creates? We're supposed to be creating something here, not seeking better and faster reasons to delete it! They're not good articles, so why not suggest how they might be improved? They're certainly not "problem" articles where it's important to kill them as fast as possible. At least give them the grace of an AfD and consensus discussion (remember those?) with sufficient time for the relevant community or project to have some discussion as to whether they're notable topics. Subjects have notability, not articles. The quality of an article is no reason to delete it for non-notability - we can always work to improve them instead. Indecent haste to delete by admins hanging on the new creations list is contrary to the whole community ethos.

As to notability, then two of these articles have a claim to notability on the basis of the engine being preserved today, a rarity, thus of at least some concrete notability. We don't have so many surviving and working steam engines that we've a surplus.

Cornwall though is another matter. She was a famous engine in her day, she was so famous when obsolete that she became an extremely rare early preservation, even at a time when we were over-run with engines. If for no other reason, she'd still be notable today even if she'd gone to the scrapper in the '60s. Once again, you're too quick to dive in and speedy an article because you have no idea of its value, and acting in a way that reduces anyone else's opportunity to become involved. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:40, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

I am going to raise this at a hiogher level, probably on the Admins review page. The reason given for the speedy deletion was that is did not meet the minimum standards for a Stub. Having looked at the article, I feel this needs to be challenged, as the article was a lot longer than just a few sentences, and it had numerous references. I think this needs closer scruntiny by other admins to determine if the editor that placed the tag can justify his reasons, as I think they are unsound. The issue of notability is a possible justification, but not meeting the requirements for a stub is not. Olana North (talk) 07:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

I see that for this one you not only tagged it for speedy deletion, but you went ahead and deleted it anyway.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&offset=20080501193932&type=delete A question - When did you tag this for deletion, when did you notify the user's talkopage and when did you actually delete it? This seems like an especially speedy deletion.

I also note that the claimed justification for speedy deletion was "(A1: Not enough context to identify subject)", which is patently untrue for an article that gave both the locomotive's name and serial number. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:39, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

The editor who tagged that one for deletion was not I, but rather User:I feel like a tourist. As to context: it was only after examining several other articles created by this editor that I finally deduced that the GWR 4900 was a locomotive. There was nothing in the article I deleted to tell me that. ("Maindy Hall" sounds like a college building.) --Orange Mike | Talk 21:55, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
so you could have added the phrase, "is a locomotive" to clarify the article. and then, if you chose, nominated it for AfD. DGG (talk) 22:35, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
But I didn't reach that conclusion until long after the article was deleted. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:37, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
The perfect reason not to delete too quickly. Mind if I quote? (smile) DGG (talk) 15:25, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

On that US-centric basis, am I justified in deleting all the baseball articles, because they make no sense to me? The article has a good name within the naming conventions of its context. "GWR" and "Hall" are an immediate indication as to just what it is by anyone remotely familiar with the area. What's wrong with labelling it as "uncategorized", something that's a positive indication as to the sort of improvements it needs. Once again, don't make claims of lack of subject notability, based on the fluid status of an article's content. Content can be improved - that's what we're here to do. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:43, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Can I just confirm the timing here: you allowed three whole Earth minutes (19:20 to 19:23, AFAICS) for an interested author or newbie creator to apply a hangon template. For a non-controversial, non-damaging article that has been tagged with a now obviously rather controversial "speedy deletion". Just what was the hurry here? Andy Dingley (talk) 22:48, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

I linked to a page on Amazon of a book that was the source for the citation. Is it okay to use a book as a source? If yes, how should I do that? Thanks again! - EndTheDrugWar (talk) 18:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of XtremeData

You've deleted my article on XtremeData. Did you read what I wrote in its discussion page? I've provided justification why it's notable, and A7 rule you site says that "important or significant" standard is lower than "notability". Lots of 3rd party coverage and multiple mentions on Wikipedia pages, both several years old, make the subject notable. What don't you agree with? Oxda (talk) 20:20, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

I quote from Wikipedia:NN: "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to be notable." Yes on all counts (do a search for "XtremeData" in Google News). Since most articles are of the type "how great this product is", I thought that from the neutrality perspective it would be best to include that on the discussion page rather than the article itself. About your requirement that the article is written by someone without a COI, it's not supported by Wikipedia:COI. Edits by editors with COI while discouraged, are allowed. I've read the requirements, and believe that the article was proper. And besides, who other than people involved with a company or organization are in a better position to provide accurate information? Oxda (talk) 20:42, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Deletion review for XtremeData

An editor has asked for a deletion review of XtremeData. Since you closed the deletion discussion for this article, speedy-deleted it, or were otherwise interested in the article, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Oxda (talk) 00:54, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi. While patrolling CAT:CSD, I removed the {{db-spam}} tag that you added to Olympic Peninsula Directory and Map because I do not believe it meets the criterion. When I looked at the history and saw you were the one that added it, I was kinda curious - as an admin, if you feel it meets the criterion, you can simply delete it. --B (talk) 20:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Prof. Carlos Nemer

Hi Orange Mike! You simply deleted an article about a person very known in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Why did you do this, I am a great admirer of Wikipedia project and I simply do not see any reason for that. I am editing the article and I am going to insert as I was doing new references, so could you please remove the deletion tag? Prof. Carlos Nemer is involved on establishing wikipedia project at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro he is also responsible for some very ongoing international projects with United Nations branch for Industrial Development Organization. Best regards, Carlos Vieira —Preceding unsigned comment added by Colatina (talkcontribs) 20:55, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

The Mannerscast Article you deleted

Greetings!

I'm confused. I thought I asserted the importance of my subject. Could you please tell me something like what you'd like to see for me to put in there to avoid speedy deletion next time? Thank you.

Sincerely, Link+Zelda4ever 21:47, 2 May 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Link+Zelda4ever (talkcontribs)

I have just created a new article at Paulville, Texas, and wanted to invite you and a handful of other friends to have first crack at helping to improve it. Cheers! JJB 21:55, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

How can you think this a speedy A3? Please restore it and send it to prod or something. I dont know enough even to tell if its any good, & I trust your judgement there, but it does not seem empty. And we were getting along so well... :) DGG (talk) 04:01, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

A page that has been undeleted as correction of an out of process deletion is never uncontroversial. Your immediate undeletion will assure me you understand your responsibilities as an admin.
--Jerzyt 20:53, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

  • While i don't intend to continue ignoring your confusion, and while i hate repeating myself:
When one person says something is uncontroversial, and another denies that, are you really confused about which one is right?
--Jerzyt 04:40, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Well. I realized, coming down the stairs this morning, that i'd set a trap for you: when i undeleted the page, i should have had the presence of mind to remove the bogus tag immediately. (I'd like to think that that would have occurred to me a lot earlier, had i not been absorbed in composing a (still unfinished) explanation for the first admin who did what you did. And then, of course, further distracted.)
I also failed to visualize your situation accurately: it matters so seldom, that i forget the edit-history page's spec'n lapse, in so thoroly deprecating the significance of the page's log entries -- which probably should be, as default, interleaved with the edit entries, if only for convenience and clarity. In retrospect, i realize i was being pretty cryptic in treating it as obvious that you'd seen the deln log of the page.
At the moment, i have to gather my climbing gear and keep a gym commitment to my love and a few other refugees from the rain. But i'll offer up the deconfusion i've been promising, probably in the next 12.
Thanks for your patience, or restraint, as the case may be.
--Jerzyt 17:43, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
  • On the other hand, the bog, that your only response to date leads into, turns out to be ever deeper as it is illuminated. This will take longer than i had hoped.

I would like to know exactly why did you delete my article of Le Chic, please help me because i'm completely impressed. bupasival (talk) 15:15, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

You're an admin, perhaps you can help. You were in the first AfD discussion of this page. You said the page needed drastic cleanup to remain a page on Wiki. Over the last 4 months nothing has been done to fix it. User:RoyalBroil wanted it to stay, but admitted in the first discussion there was not enough material to fix the page to have it stand alone without it looking like an advertisement which it does right now. Now a lot of people think it should stay simply because its notable. But I think someone should act on that merger tag. Its been sitting there for months and nothing has been done. I think the lead should be moved to a section under Yahoo! Sports, and the remainder of the article should be deleted as it is a clear violation of Wiki policy. WP:NOT /Sales Catalog. If you could help that would be great. The discussion is below:

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 04:35, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
