Tables
[edit]Captions aren't mandatory, as such, but they're generally a good idea so that the reader understands what the table is for. Bearcat (talk) 07:04, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- I generally like them better with a title caption whenever possible, but it's ultimately up to editor discretion — there's no requirement either way. As long as the purpose and meaning of the table is explained somehow, just do whatever makes more sense to you — there's no right or wrong. Bearcat (talk) 17:52, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Tables
[edit]As far as I can tell, tables are not discussed by the Manual of Style, and the only style guideline merely discusses when tables should and shouldn't be used. Unless I've overlooked something, it's my opinion that there's not any sort of mandatory rule of style to be followed with regard to tables. —Scott5114↗ [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 07:06, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

African economy
[edit]Hi. I've started a full set of templates for each of the African economies at Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Economy templates. Basically I see them as a good instrastructure to develop each of the economies on wikipedia. It gives us the chance to link case studies on many of the main exports/industries in the country was is very important as a vast proportion of the population is often involved in such industries. See for example Pineapple production in Côte d'Ivoire and how the template is used. Any help you can give on building up the templates with potential articles related to the economy, distributing the templates in the articles linked or filling in the red links for be much appreciated! For instance Template:Economy of Ghana has some notable content already but potentially these templates can be crammed full with articles related to the economy by African country. Ahh lost my longer message to you in a cut and paste mess up. Not sure about Western Sahara as it is connected to Morocco but I think a series on banking or the stock market in each of the African countries is possible - Banking in Uganda etc. If we could develop each one along the lines of Template:Economy of Ghana I think it will start to take shape. It is a lot of work for sure, but it is an area that need covering and an important one at that but will be done gradually and the templates are the first step to connect them together. ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 15:04, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I am sorry to say that I am not familiar with the subject of V-Day or National Vagina Day but you could always add NVD to the V-Day article, saying "on February 14, V-Day organizes an event in order to inform society of violence against women..." or something like that. Translation
[edit]Hi there, you wrote: "Hi, can you please translate what is written here below the three separate images". The lower part of the image uploaded by you shows an engraving of famous German medieval painter Albrecht Dürer, titled "Ritter, Tod und Teufel" (to be translated as "The Knight, Death, and the Devil").
- Gefährlich leben = living dangerously
- translation of the part between: Dürer's famous engraving "The Knight, Death, and the Devil" praises the heroic human, who in constant contact with death strongly clings to live, and leads the demon in his own chest into the fight against a world full of devils."
- Bereitsein ist alles = to be ready (for something) is everything
The Nazis created a variation of this Dürer engraving title, to be used in their non-smoking campaign: "The Knight against Death and Devil". "Tabak und Krebs" = "Tobacco and cancer". The lobster (crab) on the upper image fits because the German word "Krebs" can mean "cancer" or "crab". "Propaganda Musika" = "propaganda with music" (Musika is a poetic variation of the word Musik - music). "So appetitlich frisch" (written with long s where appropriate) means "so appetizingly fresh".--Ratzer (talk) 09:28, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Re:{{Australia-plant-stub}}
[edit]Hi OC - for future reference, stub templates and categories should be taken to WP:SFD for discussion and/or deletion, not to WP:TFD and WP:CFD. If this one had been, chances are it would have been deleted - you are right that stub types for plants aren't split on a by-country basis, they are always split by taxon, and indeed there is a large hierarchy of such stub types already in existence. The stub type is currently listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries, where just those points have been made (this page is used as a half-way stage before deciding whether an unproposed stub type is adopted or sent to SFD). Feel free to make any comments you wish to there. Grutness...wha? 00:48, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: FA/Image
[edit]Per the FA critera:
- Images. It has images and other media where appropriate, with succinct captions and acceptable copyright status. Non-free images or media must satisfy the criteria for inclusion of non-free content and be labeled accordingly.
So, yeah, in general there should be at lease some images, but the number and type will depend on the article. -- Vary | Talk 15:29, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
- I wouldn't really know. It definitely depends on the circumstances, but it might be an idea to bring it up at Wikipedia talk:Featured article candidates; I'm sure someone there will either be able to tell you if a given topic is one that might not need images, or give you some suggestions on what to add or what you should look for in an image. FA discussions don't give much weight to concerns that aren't 'actionable', so if there genuinely are no image possibilities for an otherwise FA-worthy article, I would imagine - not being an FA reviewer myself - that the article would probably pass. But you'll probably get a better answer at the FAC talk page. -- Vary | Talk 15:38, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Nazi anti-tobacco images
[edit]I am flattered that you contacted me over this, but I doubt I can be of much help, since my knowlege of image protocols is non-existent - I am frequently in trouble over my image choices, constantly having to delete, etc. For what it's worth, in my opinion your first image is central to the article and should be retained if at all possible. The second is less essential and the article wouldn't suffer much fron its loss. I see from the talkpage that you have heavyweights such as Awadewit and Elcobbola in on the discussion, and I would be much guided by them. Hope this helps (though I doubt it does - sorry). re:Rita Hosking notability
[edit]an editor felt that the article didn't sufficiently show that she passed the music/band guideline. I was going to remove it a bit later today. A larger issue that I've come across in preparing that article is the woeful state of many articles on Americana (music). - in addition, since I created the article, it would be better if someone else removed it. --Rocksanddirt (talk) 17:10, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- yeah, that's another reason that I've not removed it. Most of the larger newspaper info is in 'newsbank archives' and I've not had a chance to log in through my county library system to see those full articles. I guess it comes down to if playing around the country is notable enough. --Rocksanddirt (talk) 17:27, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
My only concern about your edit is that it reads "Jewish Terrorism" and then "Palestinian Political Violence". Either Jewish Terrorism should be merged into "Jewish Political Violence" or "Palestinian Political Violence" should be moved to "Palestinian Terrorism." Besides that, I don't see a big problem with its inclusion. If it were included, I would rather see the article be reorganized such that there is a section on organized crime, a section on general crime, and then a section on terrorism/political violence. That sort of reorganization should probably happen anyways. Tiger Khan (talk) 18:05, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Child abuse image
[edit]Hi
I removed the image you added to Child abuse, but my edit summary was too quick and short, so I thought I'd say hello and explain.
The image was a photo of the result of general violence; although a child was hurt, it does not illustrate the topic of child abuse, it illustrates war or rioting.
But more importantly, I think the topic of child abuse is too broad to be depicted with an image; by using an image it can distract, or divert the attention from the important concepts in the text, lots of which can't be shown because they are psychological/emotional/developmental, etc.
Maybe you don't agree, but I wanted to offer my thoughts on it beyond a cursory edit summary,.
Have a good one...

You posted on my talk page. Did you mean to do that? I can't see any speedy delete tag. It's a Commons image, so any deletion will be there.[3] Ty 11:33, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
- It was tagged as lacking a source, it now has a source, so there's no immeadiate possibility of deletion. The source's copyright is really unclear, though, and probably not strictly acceptable. Notably, images used here need to be both modifiable and commercially useable, it's not clear that it what is meant. Your best bet is to ask them if they'll license it for both, under either the GDFL or a creative commons (though not a noncommercial or no modifications one) (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/COM:LICENSING for acceptable licenses. and have them confirm this to permissions-en@wikimedia.org (see WP:OTRS). [edit]I specifically did not add in a reference to my edit as a fact like this is easily checked against official sources, such as the NSW government website. However I do favour referencing where the statement in question may be controversial or is otherwise subject to conjecture (not the case here).
However if you would like to add in your own references to this article regarding the elevation of Ms Keneally to a new portfolio, I point you in the direction of this article in the SMH or Keneally's webpage on the official NSW government website. I just came from a meeting where we were actually seeking Him to show us how to rehabilitate 120 destiture women that were saved from temple prostitution. Conflict at Orissa religious violence & Jobxavier
[edit]Otolemur, I seek council & perhaps assistance. As you may have noticed there is a bit of an edit war at Orissa religious violence- I've been fighting to keep pro-Hindutva POV out of the article, and User:Bharatveer and User:Jobxavier have been repeatedly reinserting it (and finding new POV bits to insert). Jobxavier is the worst offender, and, to be frank, his conduct leads me to desire to bring a RfC regarding him. You're more experienced than I, so I was wondering if firstly, you think this is the appropriate action; secondly, what to do about the requirement in Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment#Request_comment_on_users that "at least two editors must have contacted the user on their talk page, or the talk pages involved in the dispute, and tried but failed to resolve the problem"? I mean to say, I've contacted him; to a lesser extent User:vvarkey has contacted him, but with no difference to his conduct; moreover, how does one try to resolve the problem when, in essence, he just needs to stop? I guess my question is, has enough been done to satisfy this requirement as of yet, or do additional steps need to be taken? Finally, if you agree with the above, and if you're familiar with RfCs, would you care to help me out with this? Best regards, Gabrielthursday (talk) 08:48, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Dragon Bridge images
[edit]Looking over whats there...
All 3 images are fine from the stand point of free use.
I'd leave the infobox one alone, since it's of the bridge proper.
As for the dragons...
I'd move Dragon Bridge.jpg (the detail of just the dragon) to the left side (so the dragon faces into the article) and just under the "Architecture" header. That section seems to be the primary place where the inclusion of the statues as a design element should be discussed.
And I'd lose Image:Zmajski most-Ljubljana.JPG. I'ts a good image, but unless there is a discussion about the design on the bulwark, it's redundant to the sculpture image. And it won;t be lost since it looks like it's included in the Commons gallery.
Hope that helps,

Soapbox
[edit]The reason there is soapboxing on the Masonic ritual AfD is because there is no difference in the material in this article from the material in the Freemasonry article aside from the Christian controversy section. Therefore, the article was broken out specifically to add this criticism, which is already addressed in multiple other articles (and of the six sources used, three are in that one section). That makes it a negative advocacy problem, which is especially egregious because the criticisms leveled are generic and have nothing to do with anything in the article itself. Recent AfD on Christianity and Judaism
[edit]Hi! I see that you were one of the participants in the recent AfD on the article Christianity and Judaism. That AfD recommended (in a snowball result) that the article be merged into Judeo-Christian. However, since the AfD concerns have been raised, most notably
- Per WP:ADJECTIVE and WP:MOSNAME, we use nouns and noun-phrases for article titles, not adjectives. So a general survey on the relationships between Christianity and Judaism (a topic this encyclopedia should certainly cover) should be called Christianity and Judaism, as per the articles Christianity and Islam, Islam and Judaism.
- The reason the article Judeo-Christian exists, as its own hatnote declares, is specifically to survey the history and use of that word-phrase -- which has its own controversy, and its own tale to tell. (See here where I've set things out in a bit more detail.) That story is a good fit for its own article, and will get completely lost if the contents of Christianity and Judaism get inappropriately dumped on top of it.
Having contacted the closing admin, his advice was to open a new discussion at Talk:Christianity and Judaism, advertise the discussion widely, and if a new consensus can be reached in that discussion [his emphasis], then per WP:CCC the new consensus should be followed, rather than the AfD decision, without the need for a DRV or a new AfD.
Concerns about the proposed merge have also been expressed by Slrubenstein (talk · contribs), LisaLiel (talk · contribs) and SkyWriter (talk · contribs).
This post is therefore to let you know that that discussion is underway, at Talk:Christianity and Judaism#Overly speedy deletion, with a view to perhaps setting aside the AfD decision.
Of course, some significant issues were raised in the AfD about the article in its present form, so the best way forward is a question that needs some thought. Please feel welcome to come and participate! Jheald (talk) 07:50, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Criteria for Category:Pseudoscience
[edit]Hi, just wanted to let you know I reverted two of your edits [5][6] that added category:pseudoscience to acupuncture and alternative medicine, respectively. Although good arguments exist that aspects of both topics are pseudoscientific, WP requires a particular threshold for using the pseudoscience category, per the ArbCom decision that is now part of NPOV (shortcut: WP:PSCI), as well as WP:RS#Consensus. Specifically, we need a V RS showing that a given topic is "generally considered pseudoscience by the scientific community". Examples of such sources include statements by official scientific bodies such as those found at List of scientific societies rejecting intelligent design. regards, Jim Butler (t) 23:39, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Hindu Taliban
[edit]Your DYK nomination was accepted and I moved it into the queue to be featured on the main page. —Politizer talk/contribs 06:01, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- Please check the Next Update page and the queues within it before you re-nominate articles; your nomination passed AfD this morning and was moved back into the queue immediately after the nomination was pass. Nominations are never simply deleted from DYK (in fact, there is an unwritten rule that the same user is not allowed to both reject a nomination and delete it—if a nomination has been rejected, it must be deleted by a different reviewer to ensure that at least two people have considered it); any time you see that your nomination is gone, you need to check the Next Update before assuming it has been deleted. If there was a green or gray check mark next to it before it was deleted, that means it was accepted and will have been moved into the queue. —Politizer talk/contribs 15:28, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- No worries; we recently changed the DYK process, thanks to the creation by Ameliorate of a new bot to automate DYK postings. So things are a little different now than what you may have been used to, and the discussions about the new process are pretty much buried deep in WT:DYK. In retrospect, it probably would have been wise for us to post a prominent notice on the DYK nominations page to let nominators know about the new process, since a lot of people are regular nominators but don't pay watch the other discussion page. —Politizer talk/contribs 15:37, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

An article you created is about to be deleted: Tools which can help you
[edit]The article you created, Half_to_Death is about to be deleted from Wikipedia.
There is an ongoing debate about whether your article should be deleted here:
The faster your respond, the better chance the article you created can be saved. This is because deletion debates only stay open for a few days, and the first comments are usually the most important.
There are several tools and other editors who can help you keep the page from being deleted forever:
- You can list the page up for deletion on Article Rescue Squadron. If you need help listing your page, add a comment on the Article Rescue Squadron talk page.
- You can request a mentor to help explain to you all of the complex rules that editors use to get a page deleted, here: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. But don't wait for a mentor to respond on the deletion page.
- When try to delete a page, veteran editors love to use a lot of rule acronyms. Don't let these acronyms intimidate you.
Here is a list of your own acronyms you can use yourself: WP:Deletion debate acronyms which may support the page you created being kept.
Acronyms in deletion debates are sometimes incorrectly used, or ignore rules or exceptions. - You can merge the article into a larger article.
If your page is deleted, you still have many options available. Good luck! travb (talk) 18:34, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Little context in Category:Cities, towns and villages in Cape Verde
[edit]Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Cities, towns and villages in Cape Verde, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Cities, towns and villages in Cape Verde is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Cities, towns and villages in Cape Verde, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Speedy deletion nomination of Pirito Purush Pati Parishad
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Pirito Purush Pati Parishad requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Kevin (talk) 05:14, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
The article Science fiction film of India has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- "Science fiction film of India". It refers to a genre of films, which are not very popular in the country. The article has no sources saying that these are the only films ever made. In fact, a category or a template would be a much better option than keep an article, as some films have not received much of a notice and some have. If anyone wants to highlight the fact that xXx is a science fiction film, all they have to do is add the category or template to it. To put it short, this article has no significance to highlight a specific genre of films.
This can be redirected to Cinema of India, for an option an article about Indian cinema, which might have space for some of the content this one shows.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. X.One SOS 13:23, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
