I've think I've made a mess :(

Per this message on my talk page, I reopened the AFD and was going to give him a chance to make his case there assuming that maybe he didn't know about it. I did not know that you had blocked him or that he was removing the AFD tag from the article. One of the reasons for this is that he had moved his talk page to the article's talk page so it, and the redirect left on his real talk page was deleted by the AFD closing script. If I had known that he was removing the AFD tag from the article instead of participating in the discussion, I would not have reopened the AFD. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 01:57, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Being a "true fact" is a good start, but if you want that "fact" to persist in a WP context, YOU, the contributor of the fact, must support it with cited references. To tell readers and subsequent editors to "look it up for yourself" might be adequate in a blog, but won't cut any cheese in an encyclopedia.

How can you delete my own sandbox

I was told I can work on creating an appropriate article for my company on my sandbox but then you deleted it. Please restore it. It was deleted as a recreation of a previously-deleted article, but I've restored it as a courtesy. I plan to, on a time-available basis. (I'm stunned at how many Congressional articles are nothing but skimpy data dumps from the Directory of Congressional Biographies or whatever it's called.) I've almost cleared the table on the Sixth Wisconsin Senate District, back to statehood. I notice the Congressional Biographies and have worked on some of them especially from Wisconsin. PolBot wrote most of them. You had to rewrite the sentences to make the article more clearer. Also some of the members of the US House of Representatives from Wisconsin Lyman Barnes and Donald Tewes, for an example, only served one term in the US House of and then they were defeated. Deletion of An Article

Hello. I have noticed that you have deleted the article Sama ECH due to being (Unambiguous advertising or promotion). But as the company has ceased to exist, it certainly was not an advertisement. A little help

Having been around awhile, I thought you might shed some light on my problem. I have edited enWP, as well as a few other wprojects, since Oct. 2008 intermittently. I was heartened to see that you use a Mac. Currently my only access is via a device with a Safari browser. I thought I had strengthened my password, and was just misremembering it. I was unable to log in for many months. This may be outside your field of expertise. If so, maybe you can tell me who to ask. My question was much longer, but I was writing in installments, to try to avoid an edit conflict, but it didn't work. I'm not sure what cured my ills, or even that they won't reccur, but, for the moment, I'm logged in on enWP! I had logged in a few days ago at enWiktionary (is there indeed more than one wiktionary?), and I had opted "Keep me logged in for 30 days." In the course of researching, I opened an enWP page, and at first only noticed the format change. Finally (I'm a little slow) I saw my username along the upper margin and slowly realized that I'm logged in!!!

I went back to my request at the RefDesk (Mar13, had to dig into the archives), and no one had ever responded. I wrote it in installments, like I did here, 'cause I'm slow with my thumbs, and usually get into an edit conflict if I type any kind of an entry of substance.

Edward O'Neill

I check the 1853&1859 Wisconsin Legislative Blue Books and they had no information. A suggestion would be to check the various books about the history of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. These books go into detail about the people, economy, and society. These books have biographical sketches of prominent people in the community. Changes To New Testament Christian Church

Trying to pull this editorial to a neutral point, New Testament Christian Churches of America Keep trying to delete personal opinion and extreme biases from this Bruce Smith, which by the way is the only reference used to defend a one sided point of view. Advice on how to neutralize biases information?? which is against Wikipedia own Five pillars:

Just because you disagree with a source, does not justify removing the content from an article. The information is fully sourced, and has been there for some time. The article tone is currently far from neutral. Most of the opinions or "facts" of Bruce Smith should be attributed to him unless a a large number of reliable sources share the same opinions. There are very few sources here, which is problematic in both establishing a properly neutral view and notability. This Bruce Smith guy sounds like he use to be a member of the Church, and is using the Dispatch to create a reliable source. April Masini

Hi OrangeMike! I wonder if you might be willing to help me? I am going crazy trying to properly list two pdf files on the April Masini page as references and cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it. A Quest For Knowledge was kind enough to help me post the Governor of Hawaii's Proclamation of June 4th, "Al and April Masini Day", and I don't want to bother him again.

If you happen to have a spare moment, the two pdf files are currently in my sandbox. They are also posted on the April Masini delete discussion page, albeit improperly I'm embarrassed to admit. (I was didn't know what else to do in response to MrRichValentine's assertion regarding the Governor's proclamation.)

The first file I need to post on the April Masini article is from Imi Loa Magazine, Remaking Government Renewing Hawaii, Turning the Tide. This magazine is put out by the Office of the Governor of Hawaii. And while the entire article is very valable in substantiating April Masini's work, the most essential quote is, ""Masini, who along with her husband Al have almost single-handedly revived Hawaii's television industry, made a pitch for Baywatch to make Hawaii it's new home." This article vividly demonstrates the work April Masini did and (I hope) will put an end to some of the naysayers comments regarding her ex-husband.

The second pdf contains 3 pages taken from the 1998 Miss Universe Hawaii Official Program and further substantiates April Masini's role. This one is important for those like MrRichValentine who do not believe a proclamation from the Governor of Hawaii is enough to prove credibility.

Deletion of Víkingur Ólafsson entry.

Greetings! As I looked up Icelandic classical pianist Vikingur Olafsson (Víkingur Heiðar Ólafsson) I found out that an entry on him had recently been deleted by you (a7).

While I very much appreciate your "deletionist" general policy (as explained on your user profile), I would argue this entry belongs in Wikipedia. The distinction may be a foggy one, but my stance is that this is indeed an artist of significance - at least if we regard the multiple other young artists whose entries remain on Wikipedia as significant. I didn't get a chance to see the original article, but I'd be happy to edit it and add citations to neutral sources.

Vikingur (I'm using his first name in line with the Icelandic patronymic tradition) is a three-fold recipient of the Icelandic Music Awards (twice as Performer of the Year, once as Brightest Prospect) and can thus be safely said to be one of the best known and celebrated classical musicians in Iceland. He's released two solo CD's (I'm not sure if adding links to reviews here is appropriate - nudge me if I should) and has a budding international career, having performed with renowned artists such as Björk, Martin Fröst, Vladimir Ashkenazy and others (again, not sure whether this is the right place to dump citations and links - but these can be confirmed both at Vikingur's own website http://vikingurolafsson.com and at neutral sources (news archives, etc.).

I suggest the entry be reinstated. Best wishes (and apologies for any errors I've made as a novice in the Wikipedia community)

I'd suggest you start a new article from scratch. The deleted article by User:Vikingur.olafsson boiled down to a list of where he went to school and who he studied with, and the locations of two performances he put on (his debut and his New York debut); plus an obscure award he won back home. It did nothing to show or assert notability. We need solid sources (nothing from his own website); we need information on what label released those CDs (i.e., if they are self-published, that's no evidence of notability); we need information on these awards you cite (there is no article at present on the Icelandic Music Awards, so that's a pretty feeble claim to notability).

If you'd like to improve the English-language coverage of Icelandic performers, you might want to start with an article on the Icelandic Music Awards, then go from there. The articles in the Icelandic Wikipedia would probably be a good place to start. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:29, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Regarding notability of performance locations - do performances at prestigious, highly selective venues never count as clues to notability? What about when performances at prestigious venues take place as parts of high-profile events or with prestigious collaborators, such as orchestras or conductors? I'd start by reading our guide to notability for musicians. Remember that notability is not contagious: you can play at a prestigious venue, or be on the stage with a notable performer, without "catching" their notability. You're quite right, haha. But this can be tricky - in the classical world at least, many are "guilty by association" of notability, as who you perform with (especially when you perform with them repeatedly) very much defines your status (The logic running like this: If, say, Daniel Barenboim thinks Person X is good enough to collaborate with again and again, Person X must be pretty good). Well, the item that was deleted was totally unsalvageable, and the information was perceived as advertising is a lie: there was no information. It was an embarassingly shameless promotional hard-sell, full of meaningless buzzwords like "solutions" and faux folksiness such as first-naming the principals of the company. If you're the person who wrote it, I fear I am rather dubious that you are capable of doing the necessary hard work of creating an impartial description. Have you read our standards for notability of corporations? Our Manual of Style? Ann Herendeen

Well, let's start with the extraordinary claim that "queering" the Regency novel was innovative in 2005! I don't know how young Herendeen is (this "article" omits trivia like that, concentrating solely on selling her books), but that trope goes at least as far back as Victoria Ramstetter's 1981 The Marquise and the Novice, which we reviewed on the old Sunrise Book Review TV show back in the 1980s.

And since I've brought it up: who is Herendeen? Where did she go to school? What does she do for a living? This is a biography, not a sales pitch (or at least it's supposed to be). --Orange Mike | Talk 14:02, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

1. The Marquise and the Novice is not a genre romance, but an historical novel, (post-modern Gothic pastiche).

2. Herendeen is a novelist from NY who went to Princeton University.

Her work has been nominated for a Lambda Literary Award (Pride/Prejudice), (flatteringly) noted in Salon by Laura Miller (Pride/Prejudice), and is referenced in The Cambridge History of the American Novel (Phyllida and the Brotherhood of Philander). Page 857:

"The first novel of Ann Herendeen, Phyllida and the Brotherhood of Phlander (2005) is a Regency romance, with a bisexual hero who courts and marries both a heterosexual woman, and, with her consent and the help of a ‘molly chaplain’ (a term for a cleric who performs mock weddings for gay men), a homosexual hero. The detailed Regis citation is just the kind of thing we need: thanks for the specifics. (I knew about the Lambda.) In my opinion, the Ramstetter novel was intended to be of the genre, and certainly strove (successfully or not) for the proper Heyerish tone. As to biography: we look for the usual things here, which seem to be missing: what does the subject do for a living (few novelists make a living that way); what high school did she attend; is she married, if so is the spouse notable, does she/do they have children? What ideologies and affiliations has she professed? What does she do besides write? I'm not expecting as much as we have on Doris Lessing, Suzette Haden Elgin, Sheri Tepper or James Tiptree Jr., but a writer exists in a cultural context, and did not spring full-grown from the breast of Alma Mater! The requisites for notability are clearly there; we just need to trim back some of the press-release and blurbish content, to achieve the proper neutral tone and point of view. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:47, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, it seems to me to be neutral now (you objected to "innovative" and I changed it to "atypical", which is indisputable.) I am sure you will understand my concern, because I originated this page, that the tags imply an accusation against the Living Person who is its topic, Ann Herendeen, who had nothing to do with the page except for supplying, at my request when I emailed her, a few pieces of factual info~(her Princeton education, and some specifics about the original subsidy edition before Harper Collins issued Phyllida.) I have no connection to her or her publisher; the page was not conceived as marketing or advertising for Herendeen - though there can be no doubt that all encyclopedias publicize their content - but as information connected to and illustrating trends of some significance concerning sexuality in popular culture. I am sorry if my enthusiasm for the subject slanted the article, but I think that is repaired now. And as for biographical information, there is no published biography of Ann Herendeen, so I don't know how I could verify and source the sorts of personal details you are looking for without doing "original research" and violating "WP:NOR" as well as her privacy. And as for "ideologies and affiliations", I think the article situates her project through one published quote regarding her aims and a section of Regis' remarks in the Cambridge History of the American Novel. Herendeen has lectured about her genre, and I will try to obtain some material from her lectures or essays to elaborate this aspect of the topic, but I do not see why the tags denouncing the article as of disputed neutrality and "reading like an advertisement" should remain until I can enrich it with material from her critical commentaries. Well, clearly we're working towards the same goal here. The personal details are part of what we always look for in a well-rounded biographical (as opposed to bibliographical) article. My hope is that she's given some interviews in which this kind of detail appears (I forgot to ask about date of birth, a bog-standard fixture in biographies).

I also want to add my embarrassed apology for somehow conflating The Marquise and the Novice with the book I meant: the 1986 Naiad Press publication Pembroke Park by Michelle Martin (novelist), who also wrote traditional Regencies for Fawcett Crest back in the day! My edit of the wiki information regarding William Cooper was reverted. The person who wrote the wiki review, butchered the English language to the point the information presented is intelligible. Why does wiki have someone writing a master article regarding William Cooper, who could not pass basic elementary English? Further, the epitome of ignorance is to comment on a book one has never read, yet that is exactly what the reviewer did regarding the book, Behold a Pale Horse, written by William Milton Cooper. I discovered my minor usage error and repaired it prior to reading your response. You avoided the fact that the Wiki description of William Cooper, is nothing short of pathetic. Hello, I had a page that was deleted and blocked by you recently "Historic Meeker Hotel". I am very confused as to why it was perceived as advertising. We have done a lot of research and have found many many hotels on wikipedia. All of our information is correct information from the Hotels History. I included a couple of books that were written about the hotel, interviews from previous owners and their family, and also some articles that were written about it as well. Can you please inform me as to what I did wrong, and how to fix it? We would really like to have this information out on the Web so that people can see the extensive History of this 115 year old hotel. 1. The account was in the name of your business; we don't permit businesses to have their own accounts.

Hey, I was looking over the photo for Rudy Rotta, for whom I had added a photo to the infobox some months ago. Upon scrutiny today, it appears that the entire article from start to finish is the biography on his own web page online. Word for word. Can you initiate the necessary measures to address and/or delete it? I fear copyright violation more than any other Wikipedian sin, just because such activity ties with libel as the biggest threat to our continuing existence here on the web. Question.

IP keeps reverting a blanking of the talk page of a temporarily blocked user at [2]. The IP was already blocked once for being disruptive and posting info on the user's page.[3]. They are also taking a hostile attitude on my talk page, but nothing I can't shoulder. I could be wrong, but since Alison was temp. blocked and not banned, Alison can still blank their talk page if they so choose, can they not? Surely they should be able to at least delete the parts not related to the block at any rate, otherwise they would have been blocked access to their talk page. This IP user has said their IP changes around (phone) so there is no doubt it is them, they aren't denying it. Even while being right, the way they are dealing with it is rather disruptive, and I felt contacting a neutral admin for an opinion was my best option. Since the IP just came off a block, I'm guessing they would listen to an experienced admin. Or if I'm wrong, well, then I learned something. Changing all the Mayflower Titles

Mike, why did you change all those titles? Now it is even more confusing than before. You also changed the title of Mayflower Passenger List to List of Mayflower Passengers.

The idea is to make it easier for these articles to be found. If you were a student would you look under List of -- or Mayflower Passenger List. Am trying to keep the titles as close together on some articles as possible.

Please talk about it first before you change anymore titles.

An Opinion is part of a discussion, not in changing everything without discussion and without uninvolved troublemakers added their own opinion. I am starting not to give a damn about these articles. I thought we had a good discussion going. I go to the doctors and come back and it is all changed. If you want to discuss fine, I will be happy to, if not, do whatever you want. I have studied this subject and done a tremendous amount of work on it, including speaking to scholars on the subject as I already told you. If that is WP:OWN then the changing of all the titles without us finishing our discussion is the same. Perhaps Srange doesn't understand why an American would care about the Mayflower crew. It's to be expected that non-Americans not realize ir importance but I thought they would be important to us to discuss. It is up to you. They are worth discussing but without "Strange's" strange interference.

In reading your User page, It would seem you would have even a more personal interest in seeing these articles are correct than even the average American. This is Wikipedia, a global project. One of the ways we work is to share our thinking with each other. Thus, I welcome the Strange Passerby's contributions as well as yours, Muggins. As to the substance of the discussion: we have certain naming conventions for articles here. One is that a list of Xs will be titled List of Xs, not Xs list. Another is that we title articles in a manner consistent with all articles in Wikipedia, not in a manner peculiar to a single narrow subject. Thus, if there is only one Fred Schlabotnick of note, we call the article Fred Schlabotnick, not Fred Schlabotnick (couturier), even if there are many other articles about couturiers where the parenthetical "(couturier)" 'is added to disambiguate. An article is "correct" here when it conforms to Wikipedia standards, not when it conforms to peculiar usages exclusive to a narrow subject matter and its specialists. In the English language, and therefore in the English language Wikipedia, a "pilgrim" is a person who goes on a religious pilgrimage, not a Plymouth Colony Separatist. If you want to set up your own wiki with its own nomenclatorial and terminological conventions, that is your right; but in this project, you must conform to our standards and conventions; Wikipedia does not need to conform to those of Mayflower specialists or believers in American exceptionalism. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:42, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

I had maintained reasonable hope that CREWE would make some kind of productive contribution to the issue. However their latest wave of actions seem to confirm otherwise. How can anyone who really cares about Wikipedia defend a group of people that openly attack Wikipedia's credibility, insult its rules and use a bias, misinformed propaganda machine to attack COI fundamentals? I agree the rumor seems baseless, but CREWE isn't doing much to gain the community's favor. Many in the community - including myself - feel offended and angry.

Hi Orangemike! Thank you so much! The article is Ven digital currency. There are plenty of sub-texts (aren't there always though...) Just so you know, I don't have any inherent bias against digital currencies e.g. Bitcoin. I don't particularly trust them at this point in time, but as long as there is nothing dishonest or unsourced with what is on Wikipedia about them, I have no issues! (And the last time I looked, the WP Bitcoin page looked okay to me). Please have a look at Ven, and my comments on the talk page?

There is other stuff going on too, e.g. Hub Culture (I think that's the name?), the company that owns Ven, keeps popping up on other WP pages e.g. in the cultural attractions for Berlin, with references to Hub Culture's ranking of Berlin as a happening place. It is hardly notable that Hub Culture considers Berlin a place for adventure and excitement! There are many other genuinely notable sources that also do! There is more, but I'm not totally certain e.g. I think that Ven currency is a pet project of FB's MZ sister Randi.

Anyway, this is the substance of my concern: It is misleading for Ven to be promoted, via WP, as a legitimate mainstream form of monetary transaction (sorry bad grammar), with references to buying million dollar condo's, fine wines, diamonds etc. Other digital currencies e.g. Bitcoin, don't claim that they are appropriate for real estate purchases, in contrast! Take a look at the talk page for Ven, and please let me know if I can provide further information. The thing that bothers me the most is that I keep seeing quotes from the Wikipedia entry on Ven, plastered all over the internet, but can't find corroboration of whether or not Ven is actually listed by Thomson Reuters, and every time I try to research Ven, or its API, or the company founder, I come up with bad websites, no documentation, no validation with anything credible. Thank you again, and if you want me to leave this alone, please tell me, and I will. I just wanted someone to talk to about this, without being indiscrete.

Lists of self-publishing companies

In an effort to improve sourcing in our articles, me and a couple other editors have created two lists of self-publishing companies:

• List of self-publishing companies in article space for notable self-publishing houses
• WP:List of self-publishing companies in Wikipedia space for notable and non-notable self-publishing houses

It's our hope that by maintaining such lists, it will be easier for editors to identify self-published books. In a discussion at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia reliability talk page, The Blade of the Northern Lights said that you and another editor know vanity publishers very well.[5] If you can provide any assistance with these two lists, it would be greatly appreciated. Anis Cheurfa is the stuntman who played "Rinzler" in Tron: Legacy. He doesn't have an article (yet). Hey, I'll be the first to admit that they may have a case as sometimes you do have subjects that turn out to be notable but where notability isn't immediately clear. "Trick/tricking" is a common word and that may make it hard to separate the wheat from the chaff in a google news search. For the record, Mike, I don't see that your response was unequivocally wrong. We have a mindset here that when you see the shady character wandering the store with a sawed-off shotgun, you must wait until he points the gun at someone and demands money before we haul him to jail. Need an Admin

Hi Mike- I noticed the article on Lenny White, which is an unreferenced BLP. I did some cleanup, and began to go about adding some references, but found that the first one I happened to choose appears to be where the text in the Wikipedia article might have come from. Copyright violation? I am not sure. I feel better taking that stuff to Admins. so I hope I'm not hassling you if you are busy. One more thing- I have a list of about six articles (I have come across doing such cleanup) which I question notability. At this point, the best thing to do is simply to post on the talk page of the article (i.e., Talk:DJ Mell Starr, stating what you problems you think remain in the article, and offering suggestions for improvements, additional references that could be incorporated, etc. I'm so old-school, the term "DJ" to me means the person who picks the records and plays them, nothing more; so I'm a horrible person to ask for any but the most technical of improvement suggestions. Look at the history of articles about other musicians in your genre who have influenced you, and post on the talk pages of the active editors of those articles, explaining your problem and asking for help; they will probably be glad to have a look, as long as you don't come across as some ego-tripper who is only here to brag about himself. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:36, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

The "promotional" exemption is quite narrow, mostly to cover situations where there is no other source to illustrate the article, and where the promotional image is there more than solely for illustration. Advice on Technopath page

I was doing a bit of CE on the X-Men Origins: Wolverine page, and followed the Technopath link out of curiosity.

The original redirect to List of comic book superpowers#Technopathy had been changed to a page by a now-blocked user Technopath international, but the page appears to be still updated by another new user Claire Fitzgerald - possibly the same user as Technopath International, but let's assume Good Faith, why not?

Anyhoo - the page seems to be nothing but an advert to me, but is deletion or reversion back to the redirect the way, or is the page salvageable? With the exception of the Wiki article and their own webpage, Google has no idea who they are.[8]

Not really sure what to do here, so asking for more experienced advice.

I google the website the tallestman.com and there was some information about Dave. I also look up an article about Robert Wadlow who was the tallest man. There is a list of the tallest people on Wikipedia. If Dave Rasmussen makes it into the Guinness Book of Records he could be consider notable but I am not sure. Dave is the tallest member of Tall Clubs International; that's not the same as the world's tallest man, a claim he's never ever made. Paid Editing

Hi OrangeMike,

I have more perspective now on your position on paid COI editors.

I'm still learning, but it's an important objective of mine to do right by Wikipedia, which means including a company's layoffs[9], disclosing controversies[10], and using AfC/Talk pages among other things.

I find that Wikipedia could never make enough policies to enforce good ethics among paid COIs, however companies need a consultant to push them to do things that make them uncomfortable and to avoid deceitful behavior, like making otherwise complete articles that omit every hiccup.

I would be interested in getting your perspective, concerns, etc. so that I may learn from them. For example, what actions a COI may do from the Talk page, that would cause you to distrust them or be the root of your concerns - actions I would therefore make sure to avoid myself. Things that set me off include whining about how reports of misdeeds make them look bad (well, duhhh!); an attitude of "ownership" and entitlement; and an expectation that Wikipedia is supposed to privilege the company's own preferred image of itself, over how reliable, neutral third-party sources see them. --Orange Mike | Talk 06:57, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

I've made some rounds in AfC, COIN, etc. and developed some of the same frustrations very quickly - issues I sometimes work through offline as well. I'm curious though because your stance seemed vehemently oppose to paid editing, but these concerns regarding paid editing seem very elementary - the types of things done by a clueless COI. Bluntly? I fear you can be more dangerous. Look at what's been done to make Cracker Barrel look better, with the good-faith help of a basically sound and experienced non-COI editor aiding and abetting a COI one to make the COI editor's client look better. I fear this kind of thing will encourage the unscrupulous; and I fear that the PR industry, with its limitless billions of dollars, can apply pressure to open ourselves up in ways that will destroy our neutrality. I'll withdraw from taking a pot shot at my perceived competition, but at a 5-second glance, I think I see what you mean. Wikipedia is a very vulnerable form of media, not only because it's openly editable, but because editors don't have journalistic training, can be overly trusting, are subject to bow to more persistent editors and so on. (really my competition is (a) doing nothing and (b) direct editing hatchet jobs, not other paid editors) On the other hand, neutrality in the holiest sense is unattainable anyway and the current state of affairs with negative bias is much more severe.

So my question then is, what would it take for one single paid editor to be the exception to the rule? To do things so right, that a paid editing critic like yourself would still see them as an asset to Wikipedia rather than a corrupting influence. What if I was on a mission (I'm not, just saying) to get OrangeMike's endorsement as the one sacred paid editor in the crowd - what kind of behavior would that entail? Hiya. Your edit to Talk:Anthony Bennett (English politician) appeared on my watchlist, prompting me to wonder who on earth Anthony Bennett (English politician) might be: I'd quite forgotten. I skimread the article and he still didn't look very familiar but I did immediately notice some material that would be, ah, problematic in a BLP and had been there for months. I've deleted the most obvious of this, but I note that the biographee has long been complaining about this sort of thing. It's got obvious NPOV problems as well as the obvious COI of Bennett himself. While some of his complaints may be legitimate, the subject is obviously desirous of controlling the article to make it match his viewpoint, and doesn't want to hear what we tell him about WP:AUTOBIO, WP:OWN, etc. He's also been skating on the edge of legal threats for some time. Well, yes. But I merely glanced at his complaints (on the talk page), which I think long predated the material that I removed from the article. As it stands, the article goes into surprising detail about two private prosecutions over matters that have been of huge interest to the British tabloids but are I think of little import to the biographee's ostensible career as politician. However, I'm reluctant to boil these (McCann, Barrymore) down because I have virtually no knowledge of either matter and no desire to spend my limited time boning up on it. I'll just try to look out for further attempts either to whitewash the article or turn it into a hit job. Meanwhile, a concise guide to the British press: Guardian, Observer, Independent, Telegraph, Times: generally worth taking seriously. Something to look at.

I have created a rough draft of what could become WP:EASYMONEY at User:Dennis Brown/EASYMONEY for the purpose of helping COI editors actually understand what they are doing wrong, how to fix it, and how to actually become a contributor instead of a liability. I'm trying to avoid all the adhoc speeches given to the growing number of PR and marketing firms that are joining us, and at the same time avoid taking a stand on the policy or politics of the issue. I am interested in your opinion of the wisdom of this. If you like the concept, please feel free to participate or modify in any way you choose. Ed Garvey

Sorry, Orange Mike, when I moved Edward R. Garvey to that page it is because of another notable Ed Garvey, Edward B. Garvey, but I must have forgotten to make the Ed Garvey page a disambiguation page. Both are commonly known as Ed Garvey and both are notable but one is dead and the other living and more famous.

Now it won't let me move it back, would you please do it? Otherwise there is no way to find the other Ed Garvey if you don't know his whole name.

I don't understand about people from Wisconsin being confused, they would understand most people named Edward Garvey go by Ed commonly and should know if they are looking for a politician or not.

Sean Reyes - Conflict of Interest

Hello, Orangemike! Thank you for the kind words: "We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Sean Reyes, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject." I am close to Sean Reyes, yes, I support his political campaign. However, in my opinion that doesn't make him any less worthy of a WP article page. The WP editors have scrubbed my first-time attempt to post an article and it still requires some citations. I did launch the article because I DO know him - who else would? However, I am very open to WP editors and other third-party sources updating and revising as long as the content is factual. We don't have "profiles" here: we have impartial articles on notable persons. The current version of the article is still full of fluff about his local clubs and the like, not to mention redundancies seemingly written to puff him up (don't say, "was on a Presidential Commission appointed by the President of the United States himself!"; say, "was appointed to the Presidential Commission on Whatever It Was as a representative of Asian attorneys under fifty [or whatever]").

Orange Mike. I was wondering if we can work together on the Six Million Crucifixions page. As you know someone named Kabel added a new section with a bunch of references but you excised the whole section because some of those references point to blogs. I'd like to make this a good page, so if there are one or more references in that new section that are unacceptable to Wikipedia then let's remove them, instead of the entire section where the objectionable references are posted. Can you please help in this by restoring the section minus whatever objectionable links are in there, and then hopefully we can remove the label on top of the page? As I recall, the section as added was a standard publisher's puff piece, with carefully selected pull quotes calculated to paint the work as a marvelous and universally-admired piece of historical investigation. Durdans hospital is a page of a hospital. Therefore I dont see a point where you have to make reverts. the contents which was there on neutral basis and for the purpose of providing information for people. My Notability

Mike, I, a living person, would ask you to reconsider my "dubious notability" which casts a dark cloud over my bio. You are seeing a bio that has been in a fight with Mr. Crow doing a lot of deletion, apparaently because he believes I am a Creationist.

Please look at the 4th figure down in the wiki Genetic Code article. That is my work. There are better figures in Commons that I published, including the original journal figure. There are some better figures, redrawn, with changes made only for clarity. The Genetic Code article is high traffic. The first three figures are historic. My contribution of the 4th figure gives students some ideas about future research, e.g., How did the genetic code evolve? Or did it evolve at all? Perhaps you would approve of my notability had a neutral biographer placed such a figure directly in my bio.

There is a Mr. Crow deletion of "Youvan's Method" for correction of FRET - named so by Zeiss and used on their premier microscope, the Axiomat. Most people looking for me are probably looking for those equations.

If I had a neutral biographer, they might also catch last year's Nobel Prize winner Roger Tsien, stating in his Nobel paper (Science or Nature) that Delagrave and I made the first color-changed GFP mutant. On Tsien's website, you will now see a rainbow of colors.

In the past 10 years, I have opted for self-publication and turned down requests from journals. (I don't think you like that style.)

Also, if you like Einstein, search me on Amazon and see the application of his Theory of Relativity to the P versus NP problem. It's sort of funny. That man was enormously honest and gifted.

adding images to categories in the Commons

Hello Orangemike- Thank you for your welcome. As you know I am new here and have added images for the of the Gee's Slough Effigy mounds in the Commons. In my first round of uploads someone must have been "looking over my shoulder" and added them to categories. When I uploaded two images for the "Gees Slough" Effigy Mound of New Lisbon I was receiving a message that these images were not in a category and so I made the template that Motopark removed called Template:"Gees Slough" Effigy Mound of New Lisbon, WI,...which is understandable in that they had text, etc. that was not what they want to do there. So yesterday I used the "wizard" or whatever it is called and they suggested putting them in the category of Category:Effigy mounds so I have done so after mistakenly putting the code line Category:Effigy mounds in the image file under the |other_fields= position, then I looked at the other images and the way they (those looking over my shoulder originally) had added the category code to the permissions section so I then changed it to try and do it the right way. Now I find that if I am logged in, I will see the images in the Category:Effigy mounds but if I am not logged in I will not see the images in that category page. So I have been trying very hard to "do things right" but I am not sure what the story is and the status of these images. So I am a little frustrated. They are File:Gees slough effigy mounds.JPG and File:Gees slough effigy mounds 2.JPG . So what am I doing wrong? I asked Motopark about this but his answer was a bit of a blow off and he suggested talking to someone else if I need help. You can see the thread HERE.

Orangemike, you deleted my Inova Loudoun page. I need to know what it is that is being done incorrectly?

Please advise so that we can fix the error and so that we can create Inova pages without "promoting or publicizing information"

We simply want to state facts. The service lines of the hospital, the facts that according to US News and World Report articles there have been ratings and rankings, and that there are community events available to the public.

That is all. Please advise.

Wikipedia does not exist in order for you to publicize your employer. Your edits, as you have been repeatedly warned, are not impartial information, but advertisements. EVERYTHING you have done has been written in marketing-speak, not in impartial legitimate prose suitable for encyclopedia articles. You dumped a steaming pile of promotional garbage like "a rich history of proudly serving our growing and diverse community... We provide compassionate and comprehensive care for the entire family" onto a page and called it an "article". That kind of marketing-speak has no place in an encyclopedia; it belongs in your promotional brochures, and then only in those which don't have to pass any truth-in-advertising tests. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:17, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

You could be more helpful by disclosing your identity and sharing independent and impartial news articles on the Talk page, to make it easier for an impartial editor to improve the page. Done. I've been bitey too, when I found out a project I donated a substantial amount of time to on a pro-bono basis had been used to promote a PR firm's "thought-leadership." (sound familiar?) Throwing the philosophical arguments aside, Wikipedia needs a quick way to discard editors unlikely to ever make positive contributions to Wikipedia as this content would suggest. On the other hand, the COI warning template as it is, is very unlikely to transform COIs to useful participants. We should improve it. User:King4057 22:56, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Ah. Yes, I found what appears to be Shana's LinkedIn profile, a social media / communications consultant at Inova. Thank you for alerting me on my talk page. I wonder if it would be possible to conduct a study. If we could analyze how many COIs are blocked within 30 days after a COI notice, we could optimize the COI flag to determine the text that optimizes our conversion rate of disruptive editors -> productive. User:King4057 20:17, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't know how useful that would be, since many COIs aren't tagged. Most of the COIs I've blocked had a username violation and contributed blatant advertising. Those accounts neither get nor need a COI notice, they just get blocked. I do not understood why you deleted my page for Prestigious Films. From what I have read and understood, it was being created in my sandbox and not viewable by anyone else. Therefore, I feel that comments specifying changes would have been more polite than just deleting the whole article. It took me quite a bit of time to complete, I would have appreciated you simply informing me of what I had done wrong.

"XYZ Services" tends to be the name of a company; if the user claims that's not the case, I certainly see no reason not to assume good faith and unblock. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:44, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Username blocks

Mike, I appreciate your strong desire to uphold neutrality, but I've got to be candid. I think you are making a lot of impertinent username blocks. What makes this problematic is that you are imposing them with the 'hard' parameters when they are highly controversial, consequently suppressing account creation and autoblocking who-knows-what-kind of networks. The note I left you a few days ago was the first time I had ever seen one of your blocks; I assumed it was an isolated incident. I have now taken a short look at your block actions and I see that this is a persistent issue. Some examples include a hard block on one account whose only edits comprised a post to the help desk, an essentially factual userspace draft, and who received zero warnings [21], one who only by a stretch made promotional edits [22], one on a semi-established user who does not appear to have any recent history of persistent promotion [23], one for 'impersonation', when there appear to be zero contributions from the account, deleted or otherwise [24], and one whose only edits were to the AfC review process and constitute marginal promotion at best [25]. These are just a handful of examples taken from one half-page of your block log, all on the basis of the account being 'mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes' (my emphasis). My understanding is that spammers should be issued the relevant level 1-4 warnings before blocks that involve autoblocks and such serious sanctions can be justified. There is no doubt that you are dealing with legitimate username problems - and that even some of the editing is problematic (it is) - but these individuals are new to encyclopedic writing and I cannot in good faith disregard my request that barring truly outrageous promotional disruption, would you consider soft blocks, username changes, new account creation, and warnings? I am of the mind that they are far more consistent with the spirit of good faith assumptions and editor retention. It's never fun to see newcomers acquire a bad taste of Wikipedia. Let's take a look at these more closely. NCSAPR, for example, the one you describe as one who only by a stretch made promotional edits. NCSAPR is short for NCSA Public Relations. The only purpose of that account was to create a smarmy biography of a sports agent, the guy who founded the company NCSA. So: a company-named PR account, existing solely to garner fame for its owner: why should this be tolerated? A blatant username violation, especially coupled with promotional intent, does NOT need the four-step warning process. You do a lot of good work here; let me clear of that. And no, the names should not be tolerated. But they should not always be treated with hard blocks. Only in the significant cases. The idea is that blocks, especially when they affect IPs, need to be last resort decisions. There is a consensus in the form of the blocking policy that exhorts us to educate users before locking their accounts (save the IAR softerblock situations) [26]. It is very possible that some of these people are editing from libraries and local patrons are being affected. And because a user adds 'PR' to their name does not mean a hard block should be automatic, and without more conclusive evidence it is inappropriate to say that the only purpose of the NCSAPR account was to garner fame for the owner. Because someone works in public relations does not automatically mean one will be disruptive. There are administrators here who work in public relations, and I know of several PR officials who have been praised for their neutral writing in article space. Not all of them are a lost cause; not all of them harmful. As I said, I am not denying that there is editing short of featured quality associated with most of these accounts, but in many cases they are marginal errors that are easy for any of us to make. In other cases, they are more serious errors that do not deserve hard blocks unless multiple warnings have been issued. This is especially true when one has only posted to AfC, which is in part deliberatively operated for the purpose of assisting good faith COI editors who know they might have trouble writing in mainspace and thus want some guidance first. My impression, in my humble opinion, is that you have a strong point of view on this issue which is making you involved enough so that the block tool is being used in a punitive manner. That being said, many of your username blocks are entirely appropriate, and that's great - but I think many are bitey. I can be wrong, I will never forget that; but I have tried to be consistent with the collaborative spirit that is important for this place. Have a nice afternoon. NTox · talk 18:01, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
