[edit]This user has come up in the ANI Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Questionable question on the ref desk, since you've noticed them before thought you may have something to add. In particular I haven't really been paying much attention to their recent mainspace edits so if their behaviour there continues to be problematic you may want to discuss that. Nil Einne (talk) 07:43, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up. Will weigh in on this in an hour or so. Brammers (talk) 10:06, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
[edit]SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker.
P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot (talk) 12:51, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Reference Desk Suggestion
[edit]Excellent suggestion. I'm totally in agreement with that objective. How do we make it happen without resorting to arguments among the regulars? I'll do my part to keep my responses cited and objective. Good luck with this uphill battle of convincing everyone else! Nimur (talk) 18:24, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Nimur - I was worried I had misjudged the environment of the Ref Desks, given the first replies to it! I've decided that I'm going to try to keep my responses cited and objective too, because even though it might only make a little difference, that's still a difference. I think the key to getting people on board will be just that: overcoming the obstacle that "no-one will agree to it", which is what seems to be holding people back. Some of the ref deskers have quite strong personalities, but I might approach a handful of the most frequent posters via their talk page and speak to them one-on-one. My hope is that public support from a couple of regular posters would start to win the rest over. I'll get cracking on this after a good night's sleep! Brammers (talk/c) 21:08, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
False positive report
[edit]The other day you submitted a false positive report because you found yourself unable to edit someone's talk page. If you have not already seen, it was due to an accident in the code of a particular edit filter which was quickly fixed by the MediaWiki software itself. The code has been reverted to the last good version and this should not happen again. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, however; if people hadn't reported it we wouldn't have known there was a problem. I have removed the false positive reports as I felt it was easier to just go to the people who submitted them directly. —Soap— 23:39, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
- Cheers Soap, I'd checked the page and found that there'd been a bug but thanks for letting me know just in case I hadn't seen it. If you're watching my page, how is the false positive rate going apart from that? Sounds like an ambitious task. Take care, Brammers (talk/c) 07:04, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
Change in streambed
[edit]You mentioned that you work on geography in the East Anglia area in Great Britain and I work in New Jersey. Just out of curiosity, do you have any streams that change drastically (from rocky to muddy) in a short distance? I have noticed that a small tributary of the Ten Mile Run has such a change. One side of a bridge it is extremely rocky with sheets of slate covering the streambed. On the other side, within about 30 meters it changes into an extremely muddy, rockless streambed that is an ideal home for frogs. How common is that? Thank you. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 01:02, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- Off the top of my head, I can't think of any with such a sudden change of bed type — my local area is all glacial clay deposits for tens of metres down until you hit chalk bedrock. The interesting thing is that the ice boundary stopped right at my town centre (it's built on the terminal moraine): there is a small stream called the river Roman to the south of that which could straddle the geological border, and so change from clay to a more sandy, gravelly bed. It also doesn't have an article, so I think I might take a lead from you and explore it soon (soon would be now, were it not raining heavily at the moment). Thinking much further afield, the most probable part of the UK for sudden bed changes like you describe would be Wales, which is a real geological pick-n-mix.
- Actually, thinking about it, this map suggests there's a chalk/clay boundary on the Stour, the Orwell and the Waveney. I rarely hit the Orwell on my bike rides but the Stour is within my reach; I'll have a look at that when I'm next passing. Regards, Brammers (talk/c) 08:51, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- I have clay soil, but most streams have either rocks or reddish sand (sandstone sand?). Some have mud; then there is black mud (decay products) and red mud (clay mixing with water). I explore streams on my bicycle too; but I had a flat recently :(.
- An interesting feature I saw several times is shale cliffs; about 12 feet high, they are very dangerous to climb because of their tendency to suddenly crumble.
- I use this for maps in my stream articles. Feel free to expand any of these articles. Thank you. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 11:16, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer granted
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Dabomb87 (talk) 21:49, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit]I just saw the barnstar today and don't know why it didn't pop up on my watchlist. Thanks anyway. If you would like to know where my contribs are going now, see simple:User:Chemicalinterest/Articles I created. I think this Wikipedia is almost complete. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 11:15, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
- You're welcome, and your create list on Simple is impressive! I know what you mean when you say that this Wikipedia is almost complete — I was thrilled to find that I was able to actually create an article over the summer (Inonotus dryadeus). It seems like quite a lot of users are heading over to Simple to revive the thrill of breaking new ground (I have a somewhat whimsical picture of it being somewhat like the early rush to the New World and all its untapped potential). As for completion, this model suggests another 1m articles are left to be written, but I suspect that these will mostly be bot-created place articles. The growth of Wikipedia (when I first started looking at it for homework in 2003 or so I remember it being woefully patchy) is startling. Now I'm a rollbacker I've started fighting vandalism a bit more, although adding content is still a pull. Maybe I'll visit Simple with my creating hat on sometime soon. Oh, and if you're ever looking for information on inorganic compounds, I've found that Greenwood and Earnshaw's "Chemistry of the Elements" is very good: it goes through the periodic table blow by blow describing the chemistry of each element. I managed to grab an old copy off Alibris for something like £10. Brammers (talk/c) 12:14, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
- How would I obtain this potentially useful book for free? Or is it impossible? --Chemicalinterest (talk) 23:59, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
- If you have a local lending library then they might be able to get it in for you. The great thing is that chemistry tends not to go out of date - using older textbooks will rarely be a problem; my copy is of the 1984 edition. It is degree-level stuff though, and very very dry — it tends not to go much into the principles behind what it says, instead reeling off many of the reactions each element can do for 1500 pages. If your local library can borrow books from other libraries for you, then that's probably the best course of action to see whether you like it. Another option, not a book but much more free, is this series of 36 lectures that MIT have filmed and released for free onto iTunes for people to download and view. They'll probably be much more accessible as well as easier on the pocket. Brammers (talk/c) 07:23, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- Note: those are general chemistry lectures, so they won't have anywhere near as much descriptive chemistry but will instead introduce all kinds of topics to you. Brammers (talk/c) 10:18, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

[edit]I am reducing my activity on this encyclopedia. I may only edit articles when I spot a typo. I do not plan to contribute actively to the reference desks anymore, either. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 14:35, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm sad to hear that, but thank you for letting me know. I've almost wholly withdrawn from the ref desks too due to the acrimony associated with almost everything there, preferring to do some rollbacking or general tweaks instead. Will you be keeping up your activity at Simple? I'm not sure how much our paths will cross from now on, so I wish you all the best for the future — may it bring you a great deal of happiness. Regards, Brammers (talk/c) 14:46, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I plan to increase my activity there. I moved my userpage there, as well as information for my chemistry lab. I see it as:
- A more friendly community. They assume good faith for your mistakes.
- I am quite high-level over there (*pride*). Over here I am at the bottom and there are many more skilful and more experienced editors above me.
- Recentchanges is easier to keep up with.
- Admin's noticeboard is very rarely edited, showing that there is little contention between editors.
- Edit wars are almost nonexistent.
Just a few reasons. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 01:35, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

[edit]I noticed you removed the controversy section from the Trinity Christian Academy (Addison, Texas) article. I feel like a brief mention belongs, but there's no current discussion on the talk page. Looking back, it seems as if occasionally an SPA comes on to the page and removes it, someone else reinstates it, and so on. There doesn't appear to be any discussion since 2008. [edit]Don't do the hedgehog comment, Please answer the question. I'm in URGENT need of an answer.--213.107.74.132 (talk) 08:12, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- The question has already been answered by Kainaw. My response wasn't intended to be flippant or aimed at you, so I apologise if it was misinterpreted as such. Since we have this little tête-a-tête going, though, I might suggest that if something is urgent you ask Sony technical support rather than the reference desks, and that people would answer your questions more thoroughly if you asked fewer of them. Brammers (talk/c) 08:39, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Notice how I CHANGED the question. The question is:What about if the Yellow light problem is fixed on that particular PS3 by an indepenent console repair shop? Not a new PS3 (or refurb) but the same PS3 with the same HDD still intact?--213.107.74.132 (talk) 08:53, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- No need for capitalising "changed". Notice how I'm not some kind of idiot who can't understand a sentence unless certain words are written in capitals. I'm now aware that you changed the question, but am just as unlikely to proffer an answer because I don't have one. Ask your local repair shop. Brammers (talk/c) 14:20, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Kci357 unblock request
[edit]Just noticed Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Unblock discussion User:Kci357. As you also have a fair knowledge of the history of this user, thought you may want to weight in. (Personally I'm undecided, they have a fairly extensive history and I have doubts they're going to improve, but this is the first time I recall them expressing any real desire to reform and given their behaviour if they don't reform I don't think it'll be a long protracted battle to get them reblocked so I just left some explaination of their history.) Nil Einne (talk) 18:15, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll drop by ANI in an hour or two. I think the unblock is probably going to be fruitless, and we've already given the user enough rope to rig a man-o'-war, but if this step will pave the path for escalation in sanctions agains the user if they continue to be disruptive (and thus prove once and for all that they're only here to dick around) then I've got no objections. - Thanks for the link, but I read it before I posted my comment. Everyone is human, and I think that anyone who deals with a lot of front-line stuff (help desk, for example, as well as the ref desks and, to an extent, new page patrol) without well and truly going postal must have a good deal of patience. For what it's worth, I have very little tolerance for people editing on behalf of themselves or their organisation either. I'd much rather see a small Wikipedia than a large one, stripping out most of the causes of self-interest by having exceptionally high standards for BLP inclusion (so perhaps <5% of current BLPs would be present) and also extant organisations (e.g. minimum cash turnover). Anyway, regardless of the drama at WP:AN, don't think that your work is going unnoticed. Brammers (talk/c) 16:12, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Portsmouth meetup #2
[edit]Hello
Thank you for signing up to the first Portsmouth meetup last Sunday, even though it was a shame you didn't make it in the end.
I'm now turning my attention to organising the second meetup. An end of August date seemed to get support from those there, and so I've provisionally scheduled it for Sunday the 31st, avoiding the bank holiday weekend the week before. It was suggested that people might like a visit to a museum in the morning before the pub in the afternoon. I suggest that the Portsmouth 2 talk page on Meta is the best place to organise it, so when you have time please feel free to head on over there and share your thoughts. Please also invite anyone in the area you know or think would like to get involved with organising or attending the museum visit and/or pub. Chris McKenna (WMUK) (talk) 12:55, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
