Hei (Norwegian for "hi"...I posted the Iceoeople page and am wondering...

...sending this unsigned because I can't seem to do anything at all anymore on Wiki while signed in after your block. Anyhow, as I wrote to the user who originally flagged me, I'm rather impressed how quickly you spot obscure entries like mine. And my practical question was is there a way to modify what I felt was a totally bland entry to meet Wiki standards, or do you consider it invalid no matter what if I've wriiten it? Mostly curiosity, since my newspaper and self-worth won't live or die on a Wiki entry...but it's also intriguing to see what happens when a newbie gets pummeled in the "process" here. Anyhow, a PM or e-mail to <redacted> would be appreciated.

ChristineAtFreshTV

Hi Nihonjoe, I noticed that you indeffed ChristineAtFreshTV but it doesn't seem in my estimation that the username was in violation of policy. The user was previously named AtFreshTV, but it looks like they recently had a name change. ChristineAtFreshTV seems consistent with WP:ISU, which says, "However, usernames are acceptable if they contain a company or group name but are clearly intended to denote an individual person, such as "Mark at WidgetsUSA", "Jack Smith at the XY Foundation", "WidgetFan87", etc." Thoughts? Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 07:53, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

The page Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Social justice was an AfD from February 6, 2005. Please move the current one to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Social justice (2nd nomination) and restore the deleted history of the first AfD. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 15:07, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

No, it was a category for deletion discussion, which didn't belong there. All that was on the page was a link to the CFD. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:34, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

SDAJ undelete

Hi. Could you undelete Socialist German Workers Youth? As the creator of the article, I was not informed that it had been nominated for deletion, and in the edit history there are versions that by no means constitute advertisement. --Soman (talk) 02:19, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

I have restored it to User:Soman/Socialist German Workers Youth, where you can work on it until it meets the requirements for being in mainspace. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:03, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
Look, this was an article that suffered a weird vandalism on Dec 23, 2015. The reasonable thing to do would have been to revert the vandalism, rather than deleting the article. Checking the edit history is better than rash deletions. I didn't see any speedy template in the edit history restored, nor was there any notification of the proposal to delete it. --Soman (talk) 23:08, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
It was deleted as part of a group of spamming that was done by an editor (now blocked), and it appeared the article was more of the spam from that article. I undeleted it at your request. There was no "rash deletion" going on. It appeared this was part of the spamming. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:24, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Yup, we don't discuss such things off wiki. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 04:13, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
that's good practice. It would be even better to discuss them on wiki when they fall in the discretionary range. I'm thinking of proposing an amendment that in the discretionary range, a chat must be held. It might well lead to the same conclusion, but it gives it better acceptability. For example, the agreement of all the crats who commented in the chat on Hawkeye should satisfy anyone, whether or not they agree with the conclusion. DGG ( talk ) 07:03, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
You're welcome to propose whatever you like. However, then we deal with impatient people who want it closed. In this case, there was not a consensus to promote, despite your support. If Brianhe wants to question the decision, that is perfectly acceptable, but when the person whose RfA it is hasn't even said much of anything about it, it really doesn't give you a solid foundation on which to build. You're welcome to invite all the crats to come comment on the RfA talk page where you and Ghost are complaining so much. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 09:18, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
It seems you were unduly harsh. That the twelve year veteran was acting contrary to anything "fundamental" about Wikipedia was obviously rejected by the super-majority, would it not have been better to at least mention that in your close? Eg., Although the majority did not agree . . .. The kind of statement you made seems particularly designed to wound, if not drive that person off the project altogether. Alanscottwalker (talk) 16:19, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
My comments were anything but unduly harsh (I'm assuming you are talking about my comments at the top of the RfA). I just condensed the discussion into three paragraphs to help people understand the reasoning behind the close. It would be very sad if Brianhe decided to quite after a single disappointment like this, but that decision is entirely up to him. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:23, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
You wrote: "While not specifically mentioned by anyone opposing, many of the comments in that section addressed concerns about the actions of the candidate not being in line with the fundamental principles of Wikipedia. With the large number of editors who changed from supporting to opposing this candidate, and after thoroughly reviewing the comments left by members of the community in this discussion, I must close this discussion as unsuccessful." That's extremely harsh, without noting that it was a "super" minority in light of the so called "large number". It's not the disappointment that would wound or even drive him off - it's the allegation that he is fundamentally at cross purposes to Wikipedia, for goodness sake -- an allegation which was overwhelmingly rejected. Alanscottwalker (talk) 23:47, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Multiple people expressed concerns about Brianhe caring more about getting rid of alleged COI editors than creating a neutral article. Multiple people expressed concerns with actions bordering on incivility toward alleged COI editors. Multiple people expressed concerns about a thought process and stance which did not support Wikipedia being content that "anyone can use, edit, and distribute." You may choose to discount those opinions, and it is true there were fewer of those opposing than those supporting, but there were enough expressing those concerns that I could see no consensus to promote. I have no doubt that Brianhe does everything he does here out of concern for making Wikipedia a better place. No concerns at all. My summary and reasoning expressed there was merely a reflection of the discussion, and there was no solid consensus in that discussion. I'm sorry you don't like the decision, but everything about my decision in this case was very solidly based. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:47, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Your over-lengthy re-cap is just non-responsive to what I have brought to you. I have not argued the "fewer opinions" were not enough to find no consensus (of course "no consensus" is never mentioned in your close, so that should tell you right there that your close lacked, at the least, clarity) - it is the harshness in which you chose to express yourself in your express lack of acknowledgement that, that aspect of opinion regarding Brianhe's alleged malfeasance against Wikipedia fundamentals was in the fractional minority. Alanscottwalker (talk) 13:07, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
You are correct I didn't mention that in my close. For some reason, I thought I had. I have corrected that. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:23, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. Although, not quite all the way there, that is better. Alanscottwalker (talk) 16:40, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Category:Analysts of Kashmir conflict

Thanks for closing Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2015_October_16#Category:Analysts_of_Kashmir_conflict. The proposal was actually for renaming, not deletion as stated at Category talk:Analysts of Kashmir conflict. Deletion was suggested by some, but there was no consensus to delete. IMHO the close should have then gone back to see whether the non-deletion votes supported renaming – which they did. Would you be prepared to reconsider your close? – Fayenatic London 14:35, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Counterfeit (Band) - Notability

Hi,

Thanks for your help, I'm pretty new to all of this wiki editing stuff. What sort of secondary sources need to be added for the article to be legitimate? I just assumed the iTunes, Kerrang! & AMBY links would be enough grounds for the article to remain.

Regards, --- Scrotestotes — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scrotestotes (talkcontribs) 19:06, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

@Scrotestotes: There needs to be some sort of claim of notability. See WP:BAND for more details. Please also review WP:RS and WP:COI. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:11, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Not really sure I understand, because it seems as though criterion 1, 2, 4 & 5 on WP:BAND have been fulfilled. The iTunes, Kerrang! & AMBY links are all credible organisations WP:RS It's pretty clear what you think if you link this as a sidenote: WP:COI, I have no stake in any part of their business, nor do I know them personally.

Clearly I'm missing something? Could you explain further?

Regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scrotestotes (talkcontribs)

@Scrotestotes: You need to use reliable sources in order to provide verification that it meets those criteria. You can find direction on using sources here. The iTunes link is just a listing for a single. Listing on iTunes does not help establish notability. The Kerrang! post is just a list of upcoming shows, and also does nothing to establish notability. I am not familiar with AMBY, so I can't speak to whether they would be considered a reliable source per the criteria here. I suggest asking at WikiProject Music to see if they can help you fix up the article. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:56, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Oh! My God!

Hello Nihonjoe - Before leaving this accusation at my talk page,

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Blue_Indigo&diff=703888306&oldid=702401437

and thanking me (how ironic!) for my contributions [1], wouldn't it have been wise to actually take the time to have a look at my contributions, and also at the [2] history of my talk page, which has been vandalized by a certain [3] and his colony of sockpuppets who, for a while now, has been using in his socknames "Blue Indigo" with spelling variations, and lately in a very vulgar manner. That guy has been vandalizing all the articles I work on with the result that these articles had to be protected. To get an idea, please check my contributions since last August.

Consequently, if you are an administrator, I am requesting of you to solve the problem, and find a way to keep people from signing into Wikipedia with the sole purpose of vandalizing.

Also, if a "contributor" with a name that has "Blue Indigo" or something similar in it comes & vandalizes your talk page, which is likely since that guy follows my every step, please be sure to investigate before accusing me of being that vandal using multiple accounts.

Under the circumstances, I do believe that, instead of being warned, accused and/or threatened, I should be thanked for my doggedness in my continued participation at en.wiki in spite of the conditions created since August 2015.

Best regards, --Blue Indigo (talk) 10:03, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Yes, since leaving that, I have determined that you are correct. Someone else pointed that out for you, too. I left an apology at your talk page. Even admins make mistakes sometimes. We're all human. Again, sorry for the trouble. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:03, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
Nihonjoe: The whole affair is beginning to hit me as rather humorous, a comedy of errors, and all I can say is that if humans (aka administrators) make mistakes sometimes, this was a case of overshooting way beyond the target!
When I have time, I will gather a few other names Aubmn has signed & vandalized under, and which you or other administrators may want to add to that list [4]
Thank you for the apology: nothing wrong on your part.
Best regards, --Blue Indigo (talk) 21:10, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Username concern re: User:Iyogiemployee

Hi Nihonjoe. I'm just wondering why you declined action against Iyogiemployee. As I understand WP:ISU, a username that refers to a post within a company/organization is considered shared use and therefore disallowed. It may be singular but it doesn't necessarily mean that only one person can occupy that position. If you could clarify this for my benefit, I would appreciate it. Thanks. --Drm310 (talk) 18:53, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Because it's singular. You are welcome to encourage them to change to an even more specific username, but this one does not violate the username policy. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:12, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Sojitz entry

Hello,

I was wondering if you would consider moving the Nichimen and Nissho Iwai history sections of the Sojitz page to separate entries. It might be more instructive to include more about Sojitz's history over the last 10 years, with the auxiliary information about its predecessor companies located on their respective pages. For example, rather than a "History" section, why not organize the description according to its different business divisions, like the Japanese page (although that information is also out of date). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 双日 (talkcontribs) 04:30, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Oldest nominations needing DYK reviewers

Hi, perhaps you aren't aware of the purpose of this list. It's to alert DYK reviewers to nominations that are more than a month old, and which therefore should be reviewed before ones that have been nominated in the past month. Your addition of all the nominations through the end of February pretty much negated the purpose of the list, so I deleted it. In future, please know that this is a special list which User:BlueMoonset regularly updates for us. Best, Yoninah (talk) 20:17, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

Strictly speaking, Nihonjoe, Yoninah, I include only the oldest nominations needing a reviewer, limited to between 36 and 42 (I don't break in the middle of a date), to keep it from overwhelming the talk page. When I restarted the list, they tended to be over a month old, but lately they've been over three weeks old. Then, when the list is a week old and ready for archiving (or just archived), I make a new one. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:17, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
I don't see how it negates the purpose of the list (since it's just a list of links, rather than the entire discussions), but whatever. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:29, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

New contributor to the English Wikipedia

Hi Nihonjoe. Thanks for your evaluation on Template:Did you know nominations/Hyperloop pod competition!

On a somewhat related note, there is a new article on one of the pod competition teams, and the only Japanese team that made it through to phase 2 (build a pod; test it in summer 2016) of the competition. That article is at Keio Alpha. I've made a few additions to it since it was created (pretty obviously, by the leader of the Keio Alpha team; but I've not flagged the WP:COI issue with them yet).

If you'd happen to care to take a look, and maybe help mentor a new Japanese contributor to the English Wikipedia, this would be a good opportunity. The contributor is a graduate student, and can clearly write decently, but is obviously quite unfamiliar with basic Wikipedia practices, WP:V, WP:RS, citations, COI, etc. Cheers. 18:47, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

POSTSCRIPT: The creation of that article, Keio Alpha, was likely the result of a very recent email that I sent to many of the teams, at least those that I could find. That email is copied here, for transparency. You'll note, that in that email, I had specifically suggested how team members might get their info into Wikipedia, and improve the encyclopedia for all, withOUT running afoul of WP:COI. thanks for your interest

Thanks for signing up on our GLAM page! I'm hoping to get an edit-a-thon organized this fall at BYU. I'll try to remember to cross-post on Wikipedia:Meetup/Utah when I have a date. I noticed that you're interested in Japan. I'm thinking of starting a project to extract pictures of uma-jirushi from one of our books and put them on the commons and possibly a gallery on the Uma-jirushi page, does that sound useful? Sounds like fun. Right now I'm deep in studying to finish up my degree, but I will have time here and there until I graduate (after which I will have a lot more free time). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:41, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Page protection templates

Please could you add the appropriate protection template when protecting a page, such as Cornish language? Doing so is helpful to editors, as the template includes links for making edit requests. I had to google how to make an edit request just to add the request for the template! Thanks, DuncanHill (talk) 17:58, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Bots often add and remove them, so I usually don't. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 04:34, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the ping on the subject. I've spoken with the student and they understand not to edit the article further. We're going to work through adding proposed changes on the talk page, so there's likely no further need to protect the page. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:08, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

About citations

Hello Nihonjoe! I am continuing to edit the Hyuga page (being careful to only state what which I can find sources for), and I have a small question. I am talking about the origin of the city's name. Apparently that goes back to the Nihon Shoki, which I obviously don't have easy access to. I did find the quote I was looking for on a different website. How do I cite a website which is just a list and simplification of info from other sources? This is the website Macnar28 (talk) 02:49, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

@Macnar28: Use the Cite web template. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:03, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

What do I do when I believe Twinkle has been misused?

I am asking for help. This is not for a second opinion on content or to have the content in the article. This is because I think Twinkle was misused with false summary edits. The situation is solved but I still question some things. In short what happen, I edited some nonconstructive edits that was half accurate and my edits were done in verified accuracy when I corrected them. It seems those nonconstructive edits were in the wrong place but instead of looking at the original edit it was reverted back to them and in both summaries did not fit what happen, twinkle was used both times. In the first one the summary had nothing to do with my edits. And the second one called my good faith edits vandalism with rv.

I am coming to you and asking what to do because I think both misused twinkle. Since I am a new user, I have been reading around and found out from vandalism that " Mislabelling good-faith edits as vandalism can be considered harmful." and also here: Twinkle Abuse It says "Never forget that one takes full responsibility for any action performed using Twinkle. One must understand Wikipedia policies and use this tool within these policies or risk having one's account blocked. Anti-vandalism tools, such as Twinkle, Huggle, and rollback, should not be used to undo good-faith changes unless an appropriate edit summary is used." If I knew about this sooner, I would had did something sooner. I know it could be to late now but I am hesitant, if I make other good faith edits with verifiable accuracy would it always be made into "vandalism"? I don't like that my good faith edits was revert being called "vandalism".  :/ Never foreseen this trouble of verifiable accurate edits. :/ It seems it was not really my fault because what I edited was in the wrong place and considered trivia to the article. Some of the material was removed not sure how that makes the page better. However, now if anyone reads those summaries they will think I was trying to vandalize the article I wanted to help grow and make it the best it can be.

I can explain it to you if you want me to.

Thanks for your time and telling me about the templates. I still had to figure out I had to go to a page and copy that for the template then used what you put. lol. Truthseeker1022 (talk) 00:16, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Substing archive templates

Hi Joe, re this edit, why do you prefer to subst these templates? Substing them creates horrifically ugly code, I've never encountered them being substed, and subbsting is not mentioned in the documentation at {{archive top}}. Deletion-closing templates are substed, but not regular archive closures, as far as I'm aware. Graham87 14:43, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Because there is no reason to have them not substituted when the discussion is just going to be archived. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:25, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

I put Hard and Soft science fiction in the outline section of the template rather than the subgenres section because these are not subgenres, but categories. Hard and soft science fiction define science fiction differently than the subgenres which are theme-based. And that IP editor kept putting science fantasy into the subgenres section when it's a mixed genre as it's intro clearly says.

I'm going to request semi-protection to stop that IP from always moving it around.--Taeyebaar (talk) 23:22, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

@Taeyebaar: It won't be granted because it doesn't happen often enough to merit it. As for the other things, it seems to be a "poe-tay-toe" / "poe-tah-toe" thing, to me. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 04:43, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Jewish people

Here's my concerns on the topic of people you cite as Jewish:

  1. Just because a person's parents are Jewish it does not make them Jewish. Say one or both parents converted to Judaism from Christianity. This is why a reference is needed especially if the person is still living.
  2. Why do you consider being Jewish an ethnicity? It's a religion. You need a reliable source to call it an ethnicity. Just ask a rabbi or Clergy.
  3. Why do you consider it necessary to cite that a person is born to Jewish parents when it's irrelevant to their work? Would you say a person is born to Baptists parents? If not then you should remove Jewish parents from the name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.150.246.74 (talk) 23:00, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Crystal Geyser is located on the east bank of the Price River approximately 4.5 miles (7.25 km) downstream from Green River, Utah.

Nihonjoe,

I was the Division Engineer for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad's Utah Division for 30 years before I retired in 2005. As a result I am very familiar with the Crystal Geyser as it is in close proximity to our trackage and within the realms of my former jurisdiction. The city of Green River, Utah is several miles away from the geyser as well as the Green River. I don't know if this will work, but I will send you a google maps link that describes the Crystal Geyser as being an orange colored circle within the middle of the map, the adjacent D&RGW RR tracks, and the adjacent Price River. It would have been an easy mistake the original editor would have made, however I believe it should be clarified for the sake of those interested it reading about the Crystal Geyser. Also, the map link will also describe to visitors the exact location and how to visit the cold water geyser.

Here is the Map link https://www.google.com/maps/@39.2649876,-110.3481869,527m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

Thank you for your patience and Best Regards.

Crystal Geyser

Nihonjoe,

Please disregard my previous message concerning the Crystal Geyser. You are correct and I am wrong. The geyser I referred to in my previous letter is called the "Cold Water Geyser" and not the Crystal Geyser which are both in the same approximate vicinity, but are two different cold water geysers. The Crystal Geyser is right next to the Green River while the Cold Water Geyser is nearby the Price River. Again, thanks for you diligence in correcting my mistake and have a wonderful day.
