Copyrighted MMA images

Hi Nihonjoe, you suggested on Image talk:Tatsuya Kawajiri.jpg that the image qualifies as fair use, but some others disagreed, citing "#1 of WP:FUC" and it was speedy deleted under I7. I think Wikipedia should have a uniform standard regarding fair use images, and I don't understand what was fundamentally different about that image versus other similar, copyrighted pics such as Image:Fedor.jpg, Image:Mirko Filipovic.jpg, Image:Wanderlei de Silva.JPG, Image:Matt-hughes.jpg, Image:GeorgesStPierre.jpg and so on. I asked about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mixed martial arts. I'd appreciate your comment at the WikiProject or my discussion page. Thank you. Shawnc 07:57, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Replaceability guidelines

Per your "Agree" vote at Wikipedia talk:Images of living people I think you'll find my proposed replaceability guidelines worth a look. Daniel Case 06:29, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I've made a comment there now. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 07:19, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Image:HidakaNoriko-81Produce.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:HidakaNoriko-81Produce.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. - crz crztalk 18:14, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Portfolio for ArbCom

On Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2006/Summary table, I added a column "Examples" with links that exhibit a candidate's arbitration skills. My motivation is that as a voter, I don't want to just rely on a candidate's words, but also see their actions. Moreover, I believe a portfolio of "model cases" to remember in difficult situations can be useful for each candidate, as well.

So far I have entered examples for the candidates who registered first (from their questions page), and I'm not sure if and when I will get to yours, so you may want to enter an example or two yourself. — Sebastian (talk) 00:52, 4 December 2006 (UTC)    (I may not be watching this page anymore. re: TOC float right, etc.

It looks like the templates re warranted for deletion. I'll let you nominate them. As far as I know, from what you've told me, the templates are no different from {{TOCright}} & {{TOCleft}}.100110100 20:41, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

The only difference I can see see are some formatting differences. They seem to be basically the same thing. I'll just redirect them to the appropriate templates as there are many instances of both. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 23:47, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Please expand on what you mean by formatting differences....... let's discuss this further, because I do not think redirecting sounds like the solution, by the looks of it. You could reply on my talk page if you want a faster reply.100110100 14:29, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
The two equivalent templates accomplished the same thing, and their appearance in articles was almost identical. I'm curious why redirecting would not be the solution as the templates seem to work just fine in all the articles I checked that were using the redirected template. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:46, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
They work fine, but, we do not want to waste server space, increase load time, & Reduncy is against Wikipedia policies, among many other reasons (I'm sure others could think of more). Once again, if you do not provide convincing enough reasons to keep the templates, I will delete them.100110100 00:53, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Two <1K files are not wasting server space, and any increase in load time is below negligible. Having redirected templates is very common practice, especially in cases such as this. Unless you go through and replace all instances with the redirect target, deleting them will violate deletion policy. Threatening me just to get your way is not acceptable. Do you have a bot that can go through and do all the replacement? ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:57, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I did not mean to threaten you (if it came of that way). No I don't have a bot, & I am happy that you are cooperating. I've seen the templates, & I think I know what you mean by how your templates are simpler, I wish you explained AT LEAST the formatting to me. I don't have a bot, but someone else probably does. Could you do it by hand? Oh, btw, although I bet you think my reasons are not convincing, it is wikipedia policy to delete the padding, what I mean is unnecessary articles, etc.... are deleted. Surely, you agree with me on that?100110100 01:03, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
If that wasn't your intent, then I apologize for reading it that way. I hope you can see why it might be seen that way. Doing it by hand would require a lot of work as the templates are used in hundreds of articles (hence the request for bot help). I agree that unnecessary articles should be deleted, but redirects are not considered unnecessary. In fact, redirects are cheap and can be used for templates. The only caveat is in cases where the target template is moved. As that is unlikely in this case, leaving the redirected templates in place is fine, IMHO (and per the guidelines at Wikipedia:Redirects). ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 01:51, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Your on a slippery slope; in other words, we want to reduce clutter in an encyclopedia. Save your pennies, and your dollars will take care of themselves. Useless things are deleted off Wikipedia, like unwanted & unsourced articles. Pages like these have no place in Wikipedia.100110100 08:38, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
I looked at the blue links you gave me, they were unconvincing, and it does not encourage people to rampantly make redirects for no reason at all. This is vandalism. If I was allowed to make a million redirects to TOCright, would that be right? Come on, come to your senses.100110100 08:46, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
How the hell is it vandalism? These templates have existed for a long time, and then I made them into redirects so all the pages using them wouldn't be broken. Then you come along and undo all that and nominate them for deletion. That's closer to vandalism than anything I've done. They're fine as redirects, but you refuse to accept that and just let the issue drop. You;re being completely unreasonable here. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 17:10, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
I rolled back the {{tfd}} you put on the two templates as this issue isn't finsihed with the discussion yet (and the process was never completed properly). ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 02:57, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, how do you do it properly?100110100 08:52, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Others have fixed it for you. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 17:10, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Maybe related to this, on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan, the first lines at the top after the info box is:

‹ The template below has been proposed for deletion. See templates for deletion to help reach a consensus on what to do. ›

  1. REDIRECT Template:TOCright
I suppose that there is some magic page broken somewhere. Neier 11:22, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
100110100 broke the templates by adding that to them. He refuses to leave them alone as redirects, instead wanting to break hundreds of pages which are using them. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 17:10, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Your Comments On Your Templates @ Dec. 7th's Tfd

You are right; I totatly agree with you that redircts are used, & they SHOULD be used, but in your case, these templates are fullfilling a job that other earlier, offical, and BETTER templates have fullfilled. I am in every way right to nominate those templates for deletion. You trash my reputation so that because you emphasize that I think that those pages wast server space. DID I NOT GIVE IT AS AN EXAMPLE????? That was just ONE reason, & now, I've given just more.100110100 01:49, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

If you want to view it that way, I'm sorry. However, you went and nominated them in the middle of your discussions with me, and that was completely bad faith on your part. I only reiterated what you wrote. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:45, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Maybe I should not have nominated the templates for deletion, but the process wasn't proceeding fast enough. You reiterated what I wrote, but used it as propraganda against me.100110100 20:50, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Please note the notice at the top of this page. I can't spend every waking moment here as I have other important things (work, family, etc.) which require attention as well. Please have a little patience in the future. Give someone a day or two to respond before going off and doing something that you know is going to cause concerns for that person. As for using your comments against you—no, I used them against your argument to delete. I have nothing against you, personally. I do however, have something against your position on deleting these templates instead of simply redirecting them. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 21:02, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, at least, now I know, you would vote against it's deletion; even if I didn't push, you'd still act the same stubborn way.100110100 01:28, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm only being stubborn because, in this case, I'm correct in wanting to leave them as redirects. The majority of others participating see it the same way, and it's standard WP practice. On the other hand, I could say that you're being even more stubborn by pushing and pushing and pushing to get them deleted every way you can. It's getting a little absurd, especially now that you've broken some of the templates which would work fine except that you places all the deletion tags on them (just look at the top of this page for an example of the problem). But, feel free to continue if you wish. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:22, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Howdy - I noticed you created this template but I don't quite understand why it is necessary. Couldn't we just use the regular {{reqphotoin}} template for locations in Japan much the same way it is used for locations in other countries? It seems to me that for the sake of keeping Wikipedia easy to use we should keep the number of specialty templates to a minimum. Let me know what you think. Thanks! -SCEhardT 05:55, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

{{Reqphotoin}} wouldn't work correctly for the various categories {{ReqphotoinJapan}} uses, which is why I created {{ReqphotoinJapan}}. The template will get quite a bit of uses, too, so I don't think it's a problem to have it. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 07:35, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

I've been looking through the subcategories of Japanese requested photos and I noticed that you have designed them somewhat differently from, for example, the United Kingdom and the United States subcategories. (For example, a sublocation in Japan is formatted Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan while the previous standard was Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Cumbria (leaving off the country)). I feel strongly that we should keep all the requested photo categories formatted in the same way. Since there are currently fewer photos requested under the new format, it probably makes more sense to change those to the old format, but if you think the new way is significantly better I'd be glad to help restructure the other categories.

Also, even without changing the category names, couldn't we just use {{Reqphotoin|Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan}} rather than {{ReqphotoinJapan|Kagoshima}}, for example? -SCEhardT 19:09, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

The categories were named to match up with the naming conventions for other categories related to Japan, so that's the reasoning behind that. As for using the Reqphotoin template, I've reworded the ReqphotoinJapan template a bit, so it's not quite an exact match to Reqphotoin anymore. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 20:41, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Call me dense, but I still don't understand :-) The Japanese region categories (in Category:Towns in Japan; example: Category:Towns in Fukui Prefecture appear to me to follow the old reqphoto naming convention (by not including the country name)). Also, I don't see any substantial differences between the two templates that would warrant having a new template. Please consider the vast (and unnecessary) mess that would be created if each country had its own unique reqphoto template! -SCEhardT 22:42, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Having ReqphotinJapan makes it so less has to be typed into the template (just "Chiba" instead of "Chiba Prefecture" or "Chiba Prefecture, Japan"), so it reduces the size of the page a little. If it would make things better, I can remove it from being listed on the Reqphotoin page so it can only be found by going to WikiProject Japan. Templates shouldn't require huge amounts of information to be entered when you use them, and smaller is always better in these case, IMHO. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:11, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Wow, you're fast!

That deletion of Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Ehima Prefecture, Japan was sure speedy! Fg2 08:08, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Red Zones

By that, I meant areas that are prone to conflict. -Drdisque 04:13, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Like articles dealing with Japan-Korea relations? I've dealt with several huge rows over that, including having to indef block people using multiple sock/meat accounts, and trying to find a compromise acceptable to the largest number of people. iPhone

It was an improper undeletion because there was an open DRV discussion going on. User:Zoe|(talk) 16:16, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

I disagree. Articles are undeleted fairly often in cases such as that. And the only one I was aware of at the time had been posted for a day and had no comments at all. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:56, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to be a bother again, but do you think you could undelete the user space version of the iPhone article? I would like to continue working on it, and I think it would help the discussion at deletion review. schi talk 18:29, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Talk:Jisei-in

Hi Nihonjoe,

Talk:Jisei-in requested a photo in Kagoshima, but actually it's not clear what prefecture it's in (the article says one thing, but I suspect another). So I removed Kagoshima, but that leaves the template without an argument. What's the fix for that?

Fg2 22:03, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

I contacted the editor who created the article, as well as the webmaster at that link in the article to see if any kanji could be provided for either the actor mentioned or the temple itself. This would help us pinpoint the location of the temple. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 22:38, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

I requested they be re-sent, and I requested the encoding so I could try to decipher them. I usually don't have problems with Japanese in email, though, so I wonder what Yahoo! Mail Japan did on the webmaster's end. Gmail is good about not messing with the encoding. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 01:04, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi. I'm unsure as to how to research for the kanji for the name of the cat temple or the name of the actor that supposedly visited it. I could research it if I knew where to start. I really don't know Japanese. Sorry. Is Jisei-in is the correct English name for this temple? I've already attempted several Japanese-to-English translations of web pages which had content about the words 'Jisei, Jisei-in, Jisei-in cat temple, Honjo district', Saitama Prefecture, etc., for information about this temple, but had no luck. robertjohnsonrj 22:01, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
I've obtained the kanji for the three names (not the temple, though), and I'll get those up here (or there) later today. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 18:48, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Okay, got the kanji for these guys: Bennosuke Sawai (沢井弁之助, Sawai Bennosuke), Takenojō Ichimura (市村竹之丞, Ichimura Takenojō), Uzaemon Ichimura (市村宇左衛門, Ichimura Uzaemon). ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 06:22, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

I checked all three of these on the JA WP, and found nothing other than a mention in some NHK dramas of Ichimura Takenojō: 源義経 (NHK大河ドラマ), 天と地と (NHK大河ドラマ). ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:28, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Question. I blocked User:TerriNunn under WP:USERNAME, and not for any other reason. Is a block of User:NerriTunn for evasion still appropriate, given that the only issue with the first block was a likely-inadvertent policy violation? I won't unblock without your OK. | Mr. Darcy talk 23:30, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw the other section discussing this on WP:ANI after I blocked the sock account. Sorry about that. I do think it's appropriate, though, as she's clearly violating policy to get around a block on her other username. If you think she should be unblocked, though, I'm fine with that. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 23:34, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
Ah, I was just about to ask about this... Given her conduct I could understand a ban for disrupting Wikipedia, completely ignoring policy or her shocking behaviour towards Dev920 who seems to have been working very hard for the encyclopedia and has done nothing to deserve her venom. But the account wasn't a sockpuppet- she did not pretend to be someone else and only changed account because Mr. Darcy suggested it after blocking her last one. I worry that she may claim persecution and the ban does look a little anomalous if expressed in its present terms.-WJBscribe (WJB talk) 00:56, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, whatever you want to call the NerriTunn account, she used it to evade a block on the other account, and that's against policy. Still, as I wrote to MrDarcy, I'm fine if someone wants to unblock her or place a different block notice on her page. I think, however, that her behavior shouldn't be tolerated. She's obviously not willing to listen to anyone, and unwilling to take her lumps when she's obviously broken the rules here. So, those are my thoughts on the matter. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 01:01, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
I've unblocked her under WP:AGF. I feel like I'm responsible for this one, since I put the initial block in place, and she should get one chance to show that she's willing to be a productive Wikipedian now that the username question is resolved. If she gets right back to her old shenanigans, however, an indef-block would be appropriate. | Mr. Darcy talk 01:34, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Okay, sounds good. Thanks for letting me know. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 19:04, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
