List of Administrators and Deputy Administrators of NASA

Hi Mike,

Great job with getting List of Administrators and Deputy Administrators of NASA up to featured list status! I have nominated the article to go up on the main page in the Today's Featured List section. Some concerns about the article have been raised here. If you are willing to help address these concerns, it would be greatly appreciated.

Neelix (talk) 15:05, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, and for nominating the article for the main page. :-) I've worked through his comments and improved the list as a result. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:24, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Consider blocking this guy again...:) ≫TheStrike Σagle≪ 15:46, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, fun, I hadn't noticed the background behind that speedy deletion request. I'm not currently doing blocks, though, just bits of housekeeping when I have a minute - so will leave it to another admin to investigate and block if need be... Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:53, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Titanic microgrants

Hi Mike, the short answer to your question is that overall they went very well. I've not got round to finishing my write-up of the outcome (or claiming expenses for that matter!) but I'll try to get it sorted in the coming week. Prioryman (talk) 22:33, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Great - am glad to hear that they went well. I'm looking forward to reading the write-up, and please do send your expense claim in soon. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:53, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mike. I noticed that you'd been hunting for info on this copyright violation; I'd suggest looking at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#Ram Kishore Shukla and Talk:Ram Kishore Shukla#What happened to older, better version? for context. Basically the text appears to have originated in a document written by B.D. Sharma in 2003 (although User:Ballisticizer claims to have uploaded the article and falsified this date in order to use it as a reference here), and there is debate over whether it can be reused legally on Wikipedia. If Sharma is indeed the original author, then he owns the copyright (whether the article is still online or not), and there's no hard evidence to date that he has released his work under a Wikipedia compatible licence. The live article Ram Kishore Shukla has been largely rewritten (by yours truly) to remove potential copyright violations, but the text in Vivek Rai's sandbox still appear to be a copy of the Sharma article, which is why people keep tagging it as a copyvio.

Frankly, the whole affair is one long litany of COPYVIO, COMPETENCE and COI chaos... If you want to weigh in as well, be my guest; another level-headed editor would be a welcome addition to the furore. Yunshui  12:12, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

World geograph

Hi Mike. I was disappointed to see that a new WikiTravel sister project was given more importance than a global geograph like project which could potentially provide tens of millions of valuable images. You might recall the discussions over merging geograph with wikimedia and scaling the project to a world one. I see you initiated the geo-information meeting. I support it 110%. But I'm very keen to try to get the ball rolling on this as I know how productive such a project could potentially be. The last I heard there was supposed to be a meetup in London in June 2011 with the geograph owner. I am very keen to try to succeed with this. How can be go about it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:32, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Nom on Meta

Hi Mike!

Ash nominated you on Meta for the FDC. I'm perhaps being a bit overly formal here, but I think it would be useful if you acknowledged the nomination, and add a bit more info as has been done by other nominations below yours. Any help appreciated. Smallbones (talk) 15:36, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Smallbones. Thanks for the suggestion - I've been working on an acknowledgement/statement, and hope to post it up in the next few days. The page has changed quite a lot in the last month - it originally appeared to only be a place to nominate/be nominated, rather than make formal statements and provide information (which I thought came later in the process). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:06, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Now posted. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 05:17, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Catch it while you can ...

gone forever

Good job you took this photo. The building was demolished about a week ago, so there will be no more pictures. Mr Stephen (talk) 17:54, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Shame. :-( Do you want me to swing by the place again to take 'after' pictures of the demolition? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:29, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm surprised there wasn't some kind of preservation order on it, but there you go. If you are in the area then by all means have a look. I don't know if there is anything to see. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 14:38, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Trudi Canavan Priestess of the White cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Trudi Canavan Priestess of the White cover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:29, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Photo permissions

Hello Mike,

My name is Abigail Rogers, and I blog at www.PictureBritain.com. At the moment I am working on an eBook about English food to sell on my website, and I have been searching for photographs of prehistoric Britain. Your photo (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lindow_Man_1.jpg) is just what I need, and I wondered if I might have your permission to feature it in my book. I would give full attribution for the photo, as well as a hyperlink to your website.

Best Wishes, Abigail

-9/14/2012

Hi Abigail, thanks for the message. I'm of course happy for you to use the image under the terms of the license set out on that page (Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike), if you need any additional licensing permissions outside of that then please let me know. However, the British Museum may prefer you to use an official image (which will doubtless be better than the photo I took), so I'd encourage you to get in touch with them to ask about this. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 10:08, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you, Mike! I suppose that Share-Alike means that my book would have to be under the same license as your photo? I suppose I can do that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheBritophile (talkcontribs) 14:41, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
My understanding is that it means that any changes you make to the image would have to be released under the same license - it wouldn't mean that the rest of your book would need to also be released under CC-BY-SA. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:46, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Herschel Medal, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Michael Kramer (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
