Golborne is a Village by definition.
[edit]http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/lancs/vol4/pp148-150
As you will see it states "The village of Golborne is near the centre of the township, on the north side of the brook. A road from Warrington to Wigan passes through it, and is there joined by another from Newton; there are also cross-roads between Ashton and Lowton."
Golborne is a Village. This isn't an edit war this is trying to resolve an error in the page which people keep reverting back without finding or citing sources.
I live in Golborne I know its a Village as it doesn't have any of the prerequisites to make it into a town, No Market, No TOWN hall and no Mayor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EditingpagesGolborne (talk • contribs) 22:36, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Traditional counties
[edit]The County Palatine of Lancaster page is not meant to create a point of view fork, or be written from a particular point of view but to distinguish the difference between the ceremonial county and the county palatine of which there is a difference as was shown in many references used from primary sources on the page i.e British government, Duchy of Lancaster and Lancashire County Council. The Lancashire County page is very confusing in doing this because it talks about both and is written in some areas as if to state the county palatine no longer exists and in other parts it is still in existence. For example it explains the County Town of Lancashire is still considered Lancaster, but it fails to explain it is the county town of the county palatine, not just the ceremonial county. The page alone is directed singularly to the ceremonial county such as the info box. The County of Lancaster page is to be devoted to the historical county i.e boundary history and the county palatine today just as the 'Yorkshire' wiki page does, leaving the 'Lancashire' page to be devoted to the ceremonial county i.e transport, geography in the administrative boundaries and county council. Hopefully this would make it less confusing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gold Wiz113 (talk • contribs)
- Please 'sign' your talk page posts with four tildes, i.e. ~~~~ This makes it easy to see who wrote what and when. The consensus position on Wikipedia is that we treat counties whose boundaries have changed as just that. Having separate articles for current and historic boundaries has been suggested in the past (several times) and consensus has always been against it. I have already linked to the guidelines (on your talk page). Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 20:30, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
It is something that needs addressing, especially when it has been suggested several times in the past, it is an indication others also notice the page is not correct and that the Lancashire Ceremonial County and the Lancashire Historic County (which is really the County Palatine, however the current page also shows different) are two different entities. In the UK there is a difference between ceremonial counties and historic counties, both exist and both are different. As I previously mentioned the Lancashire page is confusing when informing between the two. Regards. Gold Wiz113 (talk) 18:10, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't reply sooner. It was addressed and a consensus formed. It's a while since I looked, but I think the current County Palatine covers bits of the pre-1974 Cheshire (e.g. Wirral & Stockport) so that would be something of a Lancastrian 'land grab' and not in line with most definitions of the historic or traditional county. The current Wikipedia definition of counties stands up quite well, I think. If you want to argue the specific then the talk pages at the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Greater Manchester and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Lancashire and Cumbria are the places to go. For the general, then I think Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography should do. As its creator, you ought to comment at the deletion discussion for the template {{Lancashire County Palatine}}. [edit]I identify nobody, and what is unreliable about the source? When I first posted this I had somebody saying that the information had to be referenced and not just my own recollection, now I am including references and its still not good enough for some. This is an infringement of free speech. And I will continue to include this as often as possible. Have a nice day — Preceding unsigned comment added by Superbootneck (talk • contribs)
- The description is enough to identify the member of staff. Not a reliable source is not the same as 'unreliable'; it is not a reliable source. There is no 'free speech' on Wikipedia. I shall ask elsewhere when I have a few minutes. Mr Stephen (talk) 12:33, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Just wonder why you reverted my edit. It is factually correct, and agreed by three editors. Not sure what you mean by longtime consensus. You did not take part in the recent discussion, so I cannot understand your objection. There should be less chance for the recent vandalism with my edit. --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 08:21, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
- Briefly. At the country level, I think we were aiming to avoid what became known as the Britannia construction to describe a location. X is a town in A, formerly in B (year-year), C (year-year) etc. At the county level, the position is that the first paragraph contains the current county. The second paragraph contains the 'historic' county if there is only one. Complex histories go in the main body. The definition of 'historic' seems fluid. AWB and ISBNs
[edit]I am now authorized to use AWB, so I can take care of things like ISBNs myself. But when I look at specific files, it gives me a message of "No changes". At this point, I am more concerned about ISBNs than anything else. If I tell you the steps I'm using, can you tell me what I'm doing incorrectly?
- Open AWB Browser
- Make list
- Options checked
- Auto tag
- Apply general fixes (is this the ISBN one?)
- Unicodify whole page
- Find and Replace
- Start
- Clean up
So, I click "Start" and every page that comes up has no changes. And, yet, I know specific ISBNs need to be fixed. What am I doing wrong?
I got it as far as doing a clean up on Elvis Presley filmography, but that was only for brackets. I want it to fix ISBNs.
— Maile (talk) 13:52, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
- ISBN formatting is not a standard part of AWB, you have to use a user module. The bones of mine are at User:Mr Stephen/ISBN code for AWB. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 17:11, 5 October 2015 (UTC).
- Thanks. It works perfectly. — Maile (talk) 17:29, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
London Encyclopedia refs
[edit]Why are you going round all the articles in User:Ritchie333/Monopoly adding a superfluous dot to the London Encyclopedia Harvard references? As well as making the reference more difficult to type, I have started to get harv errors. I use this reference a lot as it is one of the most definitive source on London properties and has been critically praised, but I wanted a way to avoid having to type out the four credited authors on the third edition every time. In future, could you please use the talk page and gain consensus? Thankyou. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:38, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
- In answer to your loaded question, unless it's slipped my mind your comment above is the first time I've ever heard of User:Ritchie333/Monopoly. As to the 'dot', I assume you are referring to this diff. I will point you at the manual of style at MOS:ABBREV which advises us to put a full stop there. Point me at the Harvard errors, and—if it's my edits causing them—thanks for the heads up and I'll try and avoid any repetition. Mr Stephen (talk) 17:47, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
- The MOS gives general guidelines for what we do. It isn't a set of rules to smack people around the head with. I would strongly advise you to read the entirety of User:Beyond My Ken/thoughts carefully - it's an interesting journal. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:23, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- Perhaps it would be quicker if you tell me what point you are trying to make. Did you find those examples of harv errors that I have caused? Mr Stephen (talk) 21:36, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Shortened references and non-breaking spaces
[edit]Thanks for going over Porcupine (Cheyenne), but I wish you would stop putting non-breaking spaces into the shortened references. It is just clutter, they are never going to wrap and separate on such short lines. SpinningSpark 18:20, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello
[edit]Hello. You just changed the dash style in William Walker (Australian cricketer). Do tell me if the following sentence should also have a modification in the dash? Walker was named in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League's Team of the Decade for the decade spanning 1866/67-1875/76.
And also, what is the meaning of " " the term you put between the year and the dash? Thank you. Xender Lourdes (talk) 13:21, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
- Good question. Per WP:DATERANGE, sporting seasons that span two years usually have have ndashes, e.g. 1866–67, unless there is a convention against it in that particular sport. Cricket seems to go with this, see e.g. Category:Seasons in Australian cricket (I think snooker does the opposite, but don't quote me on that). I would be tempted to go for "to" between the two seasons, i.e. Walker was named in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League's Team of the Decade for 1866–67 to 1875–76 but if you hanker for a dash then it would be a spaced ndash, " – " to give you ... 1866–67 – 1875–76. The guys who spend time at WT:MOS will know better than me, though. The markup " " gives you a non-breaking space; the formatting software will always keep two words (etc) separated by a non-breaking space on the same line. See also WP:NBSP. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 22:49, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Got it. There is so much complexity in editing here. It'll take me time to take it all in. I have understood nbsp and your suggestion on the line. Thank you for the insight and feliz año nuevo. Xender Lourdes (talk) 03:00, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mr Stephen, just a short hello/introduction from me, Partington Parish Council. I am currently working hard preparing an update to the Wikipedia article covering Partington. You have previously rejected my changes whilst giving me some pointers for better management of citations/references etc. Thanks for that; I'll do better next time. The article on Partington is terribly out of date and well worth a through update. Some of the information is around 12 years old and completely incorrect given recent developments/investments. You will no doubt see my changes dropping in over the coming days, please do contact me directly to suggest any further improvements; your help would be greatly appreciated. Almost defeated - SmudgeBerry
[edit]Mr Stephen, I read your many thanks and awards with a degree of sheer amazement for you have done little more for me than create frustration bordering red-faced anger. Why, when I am trying so hard to improve the content of the Partington Wiki page do you insist on repeatedly undoing my hard work (and it is hard work) with little more than a bland comment about breaking links etc? For the sake of my sanity why not try to help me rather than persistently knocking me back to the starting line? Specific question - how on earth did I break a link by updating a photo and nothing else? I'm trying very hard here MrS, please be more supportive and consider sharing a little of that vast Wiki knowledge. SmudgeBerry (talk) 15:53, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hello. Which bits of the pages I advised you to read did you look at? Editing Wikipedia is easy enough, but there are a few pitfalls. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 16:28, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- Mr Stephen is not the only editor watching that article. Had I got there first I too would have reverted. I gave some advice to another editor, it went "Please don't start updates in the lead. This is where the article is summarised. This is a good article and unreferenced "improvements" will be reverted. WP:UKCITIES might be useful to you." This is a good article, well written and referenced. It might need updating but not in the way you went about it. J3Mrs (talk) 16:49, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Jeffrey Tucker and ISBNs
[edit]FYI, the hyphens in ISBN numbers don't matter. Look at WP:ISBN. You'll see three examples using ISBN 978-1413304541 and ISBN 978-1-4133-0454-1. The MediaWiki produces the same result for either format. Also, when the Book sources page pops up, you'll see "Spaces and dashes [sic] in the ISBN do not matter." In fact, you could do ISBN 9781413304541 or ISBN 978-1-4-1-3-3-0-4-541. They all give the same result. (I suspect AWB is responsible for the ISBN hyphen alert. Is this so?) Happy editing and Merry X-mas! – S. Rich (talk) 01:41, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
- Well, there is one correct placement and a large number of incorrect placements (the rules are arcane, but there are rules and they do have meaning). You are absolutely right about the Wikimagic, hyphens and spaces don't alter the link to book sources. As an aside, it looks like the Wikimagic is going to be turned off soon. You have nudged me that I really ought to at least try to get the 978-1413304541 example tidied up. Sheer laziness on my part. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 09:41, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

- The hatnote has stayed up for nearly a week now, so the discussion is probably over. Regards.--Nevé–selbert 14:43, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
- Maybe this time. Mr Stephen (talk) 17:03, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Dear Mr Stephen - I hope that you are keeping well. I have been doing some work on the above article, here, Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Monnow Bridge/archive1. However, I have hit a bit of a stumbling block regarding the images. An editor has given a helpful review, but I have absolutely no idea how to address the three issues raised. If you had time, I would be very grateful if you could take a look and advise, or perhaps suggest where I might go for an answer. Many thanks and all the best. KJP1 (talk) 06:05, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
- @KJP1: These appear to be licensing issues, which are a bit out of my line, I'm afraid. Sorry. Mr Stephen (talk) 19:36, 1 May 2017 (UTC)
- Not a problem - sorted, by others not by me! All the best. KJP1 (talk) 20:42, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Circassians in Israel
[edit]Hello, I found your name in the "View history" of the page Circassians in Israel (sorry for my poor English).
A user removed 6 times the references I tried to insert in the article. I published 3 sections in Talk page, he didn't answer. What can I do ? Thank you for your help. --86.249.76.88 (talk) 20:24, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
Such an extraordinary structure deserved its own article. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 08:55, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Could you please explain...
[edit]Could you please explain this redirect?
Your edit summary was "(WP:POVFORK & against consensus)".
Okay, where is the discussion where you found this consensus you refer to? Did you consider providing a link to it, in your edit summary? Could you please consider providing that kind of link if you every use an edit summary that claims to be based on a consensus, in future? Geo Swan (talk) 22:35, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
