Coaching Methods

Hey MBisanz, Take a look at the coaching methods page as I've reworked it? Also, take a look at the AFD/DVR exercises. Let me know what you think.Balloonman (talk) 09:07, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Adoption request Re: Incomprehensible article

MB writes: As an uninvolved party, I took a look at it, and here are some of the parts that are incomprehensible to me:

JS Uninvolved: I have two glosses on the word “cabalist”  !. One who uses the definitions of the sacred letters to study Torah privately and/or with a teacher or small group. 2. One who promulgates false definitions of the letters or denies there are definitions, all very publicly. Likely you don’t fit either of my glosses and I hope your “aspiring cabalist” label, even though you may have intended it humorously signifies some interest in the base document that when tortuously rendered into English begins with the allegorical expression “In the Beginning.” Thanks for taking the time.

MB ‘this gloss is termed Carlo Suarez or non-mystical cabala because It is not ‘above the intellect." JS ‘ I agree this is bad. The Kabbalah article states that it is mystical Jewish tradition, that is “above the intellect.” I meant to emphasize that Suarez’s use of the term “cabala” was not outside the intellect. There’s a page that sends different uses, glosses of the word to different pages but not a page that is not "above the intellect."

MB “Any who have chosen to work in his “laboratory” have not published”

JS Bad. Personal irrelevant observation. What I meant was allegorical. Above I had paraphrased Suarez; the laboratory for testing formulas(groups of Torah glyphs) in cabala was the individual mind. Empirical work of a scientist must be testable in any other scientist’s laboratory. I was too judgemental. Many have published, quoting Suarez and expanding on his sentences but none have worked directly from his definitions of the Hglyphs, elements of thought. I haven’t found a writer who appears to have owned a Hebrew/English dictionary and digested it using Suarez’s definitions. About every two years after CYPHER OF GENESIS found me in ’81 I would go to the nearest University library, Tulane, and search thru all the “cabala” books for someone starting with the definitions. Suarez wrote that physicists would be the most likely ones to appreciate the definitions. I did. We are taught to feel glyphs and formulas thereof; get graded on it. I haven’t looked for another appreciative physicist for awhile.

"Something is either in the “container” or concept or outside." The definition given Suarez for Baht is: a concept. I looked up the definition of a concept: a label for a group of similar things. My Heb/Eng. dictionaries give “in” as a definition for Bayt. It is the first symbol in Torah. The English Bible gives “In…….” When one consciously holds a concept in mind, say tricycle, for that moment things other than tricycles are outside the conscious mind. Giving it cypher value two is apt. In and out is a twoness. Humor: Careful, some women will be irritated if you speak of the concept “woman” as though you think they are all similar.

"Verifications? CYPHER OF GENESIS. THE MERIDIAN and BANTAM MEGHIDDO HEBREW/ENGLISH DICTIONARYS"

JS I haven’ read the WP definition of verification yet. These titles refer to the books wherein the above ideas can be found.

"Carlo writes that the Mem(40) is a period of forming or teaching as in the womb. Surely Noun(50), often said to symbolize “fish,” has spiritual significance not limited to the calendar."

JS Best to leave this out of an introduction to the definitions.

As a graduate student in Baltimore in ’64 or ’65 before classes started I went to a party and saw my first N.Y.T. and Sunday supplement, Parade? It held an article stating that a Jewish male, over forty, who had memorized Torah, read all of Talmud and some other texts could apply to be taught the definitions of the individual symbols, letters in the Hebrew bible if he promised not to talk about it until he was 50. As a physicist it made perfect sense to me. The silence till “50” part appeared to be a prohibition like no “pearls before swine” or folks who won’t lay the foundation. It was much later that I noted the NT quoting the Pharisees as saying, “why are you speaking of these things and you are not yet 50." I took these as calendar time back then. Suarez is explicit about the significance of the Mem, 40 as a period of formation as in “40 years in the desert” and “40 years in the desert. I did speculate that the “50” in the NT and Parade article weren’t calendar ages but refer to Noun, 50.

"Not so with any other published books or internet offerings. The “opening” was for a moment and it appears to be closed."

JS Culled. This was my research. Allegorically, the door between those who know the definitions and us has only been opened during the ‘60s according to Suarez. The Parade article was also evidence. Suarez uses the term “opening.” Likely whoever “opened” to him used it. He wrote that there was a surge of open-mindedness in the ‘60s that prompted the opening.

Using your editing suggestions I'll write a more succint article and ask you to look at it. Thanks again.

Keilana, thanks for loaning me your blackboard and sending me to MB.

Regarding Admin Coaching

  • Hello, I've been looking at the admin coaching program, and I've looked at the requirements, I believe my issue is my account age. I've only been on Wikipedia for one month, but as I saw in the requirements page that "Similarly, failure to meet these guidelines does not mean that nobody will accept you as a coachee or fail an RfA.". I've recently just finished my adoption program, and I feel that this may be something I am ready for. I see that you are the program co-ordinator, so I thought I should ask you. Do you think there is any possibility I could place a request for admin coaching? And, here is my edit count/statistics, just for your info. I primarialy work on anti-vandalism, CSDs, and reports to the AIV. Steve Crossin (talk) 06:33, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I completely agree to both requirements. Self-nominating for an RFA, i think, is a bad idea. So yes, I would wait until you say I am ready. And I have no other accounts on Wikipedia, however I have an account on Wikimedia Commons, and a few other non-Wikimedia wikis (such as 24 Wikia). However I may create the account Cro0016 as a doppleganger account, as it was my username prior to a Change of Username a few days ago. Just to clarify, which page am I to edit? Is it the requests page? Sorry, I'm just not 100% sure which page you are referring to. Steve Crossin (talk) 06:54, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  •  Done. And, no problem about links. I generally know my way around Wikipedia, and I know the shortcuts for most of the policies. I've added myself to the status page, I'm pretty sure I did it correctly. Steve Crossin (talk) 07:03, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Just a question. In lesson 3, you said that "most of your article creations have been in that area and some of them have since been redirected to the main article". True, most of my contributions were redirected to he main article, however, I've checked my full contribution list, and none of the articles I contributed on were redirected (some articles I contributed on was me fixing anchors for characters that had been merged, so they would redirect to the proper section in the article that they were redirected to, an example of what I was doing is here. However, if you're just referring to the 24 articles in general, and how many have been merged, and the politics behind this, please tell me, and I can provide an explanation of that, I was just not 100% certain on the question. Steve Crossin (talk) 07:55, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Another query about lesson 3, I am still unclear on the question you are asking me. Are you asking me about the possible technical ramifications, or the hidden politics about these merges? Because if it is the latter and not the former, then that is easy to answer, I've been viewing this ever since I started at Wikipedia, and I also know the ArbCom case that you are referring to. Could you re-clarify the question, if possible? Steve Crossin (talk) 06:36, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
  • And, finally, just a note. I have not been following the ArbCom case in question word for word, but I have a rough idea to what is going on in the case. I must ask something. Can I express my answer freely? Meaning, in this issue with the 24 articles, and the mergists/deletionists vs inclusionists, there have been specific editors involved. My answer would be as neutral as possible, and I strive to maintain no personal attacks, I just feel that not mentioning them/their actions, and how that has affected the case/articles, would impact on my ability to fully answer the question. Is this OK by you? And, also, question 4. It says, "Describe a circumstance where an admin should not use them, despite a valid issue existing.". I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The only thing that came to mind, was if there was an Article for Deletion proposal, that ended in "Delete or Merge", then, normally, it should be deleted or merged. However, as is at the moment, with the injunction, this cannot happen. However, I also see that the case is drawing to a close. Sorry, I am a sort of person that likes to be 100% clear on questions. I guess I'm just afraid to make mistakes. Steve Crossin (talk) 07:28, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Okay, thanks a lot for clarifying that. I now know fully how to answer Question 3 correctly. And, to be honest, the case I have been following even closer, is the Mediation Cabal case, which can be found here. This issue is something I have been following very closely, so, now I know exactly what you are asking, I can answer this question fully. However, it may take me an hour or two to formulate my answer, I like to think these sort of things over. I was told coaching generally takes 3 months or so, I see no need to rush this. Quality is more important. And, question 4, I'm still not 100% certain on. I think I'll review the New Admin School pages, see if there's anything there that can help. Sorry if I seem...obsessive-compulsive, I just want to be sure of myself. And I do ask lots of questions, tell me if I'm asking too many. Steve Crossin (talk) 07:52, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

BCB RFAr

I made that approach to Carcharoth and LaraLove as I had no experience whatsoever in ArbCom cases. I can assist with grunt work, but I'm not even sure what I'd be looking for in compiling diffs etc. If you think I can help, do let me know, but I'm not sure how useful I can be. My RfB

I wanted to personally thank you, MBisanz, for your support in my recent RfB, and for your well-thought-out and pertinent questions. I am thankful and appreciative that you feel that I am worthy of the trust the community requires of its bureaucrats, and I hope to continue to behave in a way that maintains your trust in me and my actions. I have heard the community's voice that they require more of a presence at RfA's of prospective bureaucrats, and I will do my best over the near future to demonstrate such a presence and allow the community to see my philosophy and practices in action. I hope I can continue to count on your support when I decide to once again undergo an RfB. If you have any suggestions, comments, or constructive criticisms, please let me know via talkpage or e-mail. Thank you again. -- Avi (talk) 16:35, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Global gazetteer

The best thing I have found to date is Global gazetteer. It lists places A-Z through an A-Z of all countries in the world. The information on population should be ignored though as it is an estimate but actual location, and elevation is reliable as it is based on satellite data. I'd be amazed if a bot couldn't generate articles based on this. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:03, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

All the basic data is there for coordinates, elevation, distance to nearest settlements and time zone as it is based on satellite information which is reliable. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:09, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Thats what I thought it looks to be like the perfect gazetteer. However population should NOT be used as it is estimated but the other basics are based on satellite data and in my experience at comparing data on various sites that site has the details on geo location, settlements and elevation correct every time. Population would have to be left ouout until a reliable government source becomes available which I'm certain it will for most countries eventually based on their census details. Basically I want to be looking to create articles like Lingoye, Mogolo etc through the gazetteer for every country. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

All it needs is just raw power to get them onto here and give a strong platform to build upon I think ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:21, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes I agree. If you could help propose it this would help considerably. The only problem I see is that at present that list uses decimal coordinates -but the infobox pin maps use DMS -would there be a way a bot could convert it into DMS using an automatic geohack with wikimapia or something? If you visit the pageson any plac eon that site it has the coordinates in DMS any etc 3 45 60 N 5 10 0 E . We'd have to find a way this can be done by programme and of course naturally tag each page a spart of the relative wikiproject to save tagging time later. Botting those US places and politicans was very important, but I believe such a bot drive would provide an enormous benefit towards counteracting systematic bias and try to at least start places evenly to build upon. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:30, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm certain it could be done seems as every page is in exactly the same format. Its just a question of how you go about programming it. But a website which attemps to provide "the sum of all human knowledge" can't ignore 90% of the worlds places. I;ve been checking out some of these countries on virtual earth and they are enormous. Then you look on wikipedia and some of the countries only have 15 articles on settlements max, which is not good enough at present for a project of this scale ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:38, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Pseudoscience discretionary sanctions

Hi! As somebody who commented on a January proposal to place all articles related to homeopathy on article probation, I would greatly appreciate your input on a new proposal to help combat disruption that would scrap the probation and implement discretionary sanctions. I apologize for any intrusion, but this is to my knowledge the first time sanctions of this nature have been attempted to be enforced by the community, so I feel that a wide range of opinions is necessary. Thank you in advance for any comments you may make. east718 (talk) 19:00, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Four phase coaching system

I have developed a new admin coaching method called the Four Phase System. It is summarized here, and it is detailed (and being developed) here. Becuase you are the current coordinator of the project I decided to notify you of the new development. You should also know that User:Rudget has also adopted my coaching strategy, and an example of the coaching in action is available here. It would be helpful to me if you could direct other users to the development page, and to help get things put together.

Though I am more interested in developing new coaching strategies and methods than actually matching users and coaches, I believe that I could also be of assistance in the coordinating/rejuvinating effort that you are putting into the admin coaching process. That being said, it would be greatly appreciated if you could give me information on coordination work that needs to be done. Thank you, Malinaccier (talk) 03:47, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

WP:RFAR

You have a lot of things out of context and un-related in your comments. [1] was in relation to a page that was MfDed as an attack page. [2] was not only removed by me but at least one other editor. it was removed as discussions are not votes. [3] is the truth, you cannot expect someone to stay cheery over constant abuse, and double standard. people want to ignore the abuse that is thrown at me, while attacking me when I react. [4] I have every right to say that I dont trust certain admins, just look at the recent desysop of the puppet master. Just because your an admin does not mean that I have to trust you. [5] during the BCBot reverts that I was forced to do, there were categories that should not have been re-added, some were vandalism, others breached WP:BLP and WP:V. [6] since when are other users allowed to edit comments that were not left by them? [7] this "non-disruptive" comment was left on the bots user page, not its talkpage. βcommand 04:03, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Well I'm won't argue over all the points. I had no idea Maxim was preparing an RFAR and when I got home tonight it was either rush mine together or have it never heard. I would've like to follow my plan of pulling it together this weekend and having a couple other users check it for coherence. Still the MfD' page here [8] did have some productive comments (I think mine and Carc's usually are at least civil). [9] might've been removed by another editor, but it was a poll on something relating directly to you and wasn't an attack, so I'd say it should've been flagged for another editor to remove. What triggered me on [10] was "until the attacks against me are handled properly dont expect me not to react once in a while." there are so many better ways that could've been phrased, but I interpreted it as a threat of "do something or I might go off the handle in the future". For [11] I listed it under ettiquette since I felt there was not the need to be as emphatic as "Not only no but hell no. I dont trust you,". For [12] I used it twice. Once to indicate you had a preference against an RfC and for Arbcom and a second time in the NPA category, since it says an Admin forced you to do something, when its well known that short of a user finding another in real life or something, we all do our own actions by choice. And its already a bright-line rule in WP:B that Bots may not edit People categories, therefore there should not be an intersection of BLP (people issues) and BOT edits. I didn't say others can edit your comments in [13], but that you defended a userpage warning that others (and myself) find very biting. And I've removed #7 since it was to a usre page. If Maxim had given me time to have someone else look at this, that should've been picked up. And the primary reason I felt compelled to start working up an RFAR was the notice today that the new bot was planned off-wiki to be implemented in a way to exclude comments and that when I asked a non-aggressive comment, it was closed and protected. That really tipped it that this is not just the image tagging issue for me. MBisanz talk 05:11, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Me too on the off-wiki planning and "forcing through" of the bot clone. That shows stunning disregard for process, even if they fall back on WP:IAR. If the ground had been prepared on-wiki, I would have supported it. I still do support the new bot, in fact, but not the way Betacommand and others discussed it off-wiki first and then rubber-stamped the paperwork on-wiki. I only became certain of the off-wiki discussion (though it was actually pretty obvious this had happened) when Betacommand left a comment on BrownHairedGirl's talk page, and I provided a diff to that in my statement. MBisanz, do you know if this particular issue is being discussed elsewhere? Carcharoth (talk) 08:46, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

MBisanz, do you have diffs or discussion links for: "There appears no consensus on how phase 4 should be implemented", and "Insisting on prior warning before bot blocks"? Carcharoth (talk) 08:46, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Question 14

  • Hello, about Question 14, I am not quite sure how to actually do it. I've found one page, in the new pages section, this is the info on it. "15:49, March 9, 2008 Po Nation (hist) ‎[2,975 bytes] Ponation (Talk | contribs) (←Created page with 'The name Po originated from the red teletubby, Po. It was spurred by the former Elizabeth Higgins' attempt at a headstand in her pink sweatpant...')". Is that the sort of thing I am to copy and paste into the answer for the lesson? Is it possible you could give an example? And, I still haven't answered that question, the one on ArbCom, but I will now. Steve Crossin (talk) 05:06, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Okay, just a question. In lesson 7, it asks, "Can an admin set cascading protection?". I've reviewed the Protection Policy page, and I cannot find a reference to whether admins can create this sort of protection, I think it's a trick question. And also, can you clarify the IP address on that question, or was it intentional? As in, is the IP address you entered deliberate? Steve Crossin (talk) 02:08, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Okay, another question. How do you want me to format my answer to question 5? I have the links to the AFD discussions, what exactly are you asking of this question? And, if I ask too many questions, let me know, and I'll try cutting down. Steve Crossin (talk) 03:36, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Okay, I have answered Question 10. And, I have only participated in 10 AFDs, and have not nominated any myself. Should I participate in more AFDs before I answer this question? Also, you said that you have a short list of the admin tools hidden in your user space. They're hidden well, I can't find them anywhere. I will just list the tools from the official page, I suppose. Admin Coaching

  • I think I should tell you, I may be a fraction slow completing lessons at the moment, as I am mediating an article, which I've been helping to resolve this dispute with, there are a few different parties involved. An admin fully protected it for one week, and I'm informally mediating it, as the two main parties agreed previously. This may be good experience for me. I will do my best to answer those questions as soon as possible. Here is the talk page, if you're interested. Talk:Sovereign Grace Ministries Steve Crossin (talk) 22:21, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
I'll watch from a far. Good experience mediating, far better than manufactured lessons. Also, one of these days I'll help you set up an automatic talk page archiver if you'd like. MBisanz talk 00:04, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I had MizsaBot3 set up, but it never seemed to archive my pages, so I just gave up, and I do them manually, but if this can be fixed, I'd appreciate it. And I'll do my best with this mediation. Steve Crossin (talk) 00:38, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

"Something is either in the “container” or concept or outside."

The definition given Suarez for Baht is: a concept.

Dear MB,

I have applied for help on the page yoyu suggested. Could you point me to one of the attempted clarifications that did not appear clear to you? Could you give me a hint of what you meant by "I am an aspiring cabalist---if there is a cabal"
The Kabbalah article, defined as "mystical" is over my head too. Could you refer me to one sentence in it that you comprehend? I won't ask any more questions and thank you now for your pacience, John ShoemakerJohnshoemaker (talk) 06:53, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Johnshoemaker (talk) 13:02, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

I included Suarez' bibliography to reassure you of notability and verifiability. The article will refer only to one book THE CYPHER OF GENESIS in which he gives the definitions. There's only 7 more than the two I gave you. Twice my request for help on WPproject Judaism has disappeared. Maybe I'd better read talk page rules.Johnshoemaker (talk) 10:11, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Help with a PDF file

Hi Matt, I edited a bio a while ago (David Levy) and 2 of my external links expire soon because LA times archives the article. I've got reprint permission from them so I created a PDF file and uploaded one on wiki for test purpose. (DrDavidLevyAndTheLakers PartTwo.pdf).

I tried to add the link to the pdf in a similar way to the one below – this is one opens the pdf file when you click on the link {{PDFlink|[http://library.concordia.ca/help/howto/turabian.pdf Citation Guide - Turabian]}} -- this is my test – click and it redirects to the image, does not open the pdf {{PDFlink|[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:DrDavidLevyAndTheLakers_PartTwo.pdf test pdf 1]}} -- this is another test – same result {{PDFlink|[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:DrDavidLevyAndTheLakers_PartTwo.pdf test pdf 2]]}}

So, where is the issue? Is it the way I uploaded the file? Is the link?

Thank you very much for helping me with this. --LaviniaVasilache (talk) 18:14, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Lavinia

HAY THAR

I added a citation to Drug-eluting stent, citation number 1, which links here. However, if you click the link, either A.)you'll have cookies enabled and it'll work fine or B.)You won't and it won't work for you, like the majority of people. You can read the actual article by clicking the first result here, but changing the citation to a google search seems improper. I came to your talk page to ask you, should I remove the citation, keep it as it is, or change it to the google search and say to click the first result? An image

Hi MBisanz, I was recently asked to make an edit to a protected image, File:Impact event.jpg, and change the license to {{PD-USGov-NASA}}. Is this correct for the image? Images are not my area of expertise, and I thought I'd come to an admin with more image experience. Thanks. Acalamari 01:46, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. So putting Template:PD-retouched-user underneath the PD-self tag would be correct then? Okay, thank you, MBisanz. Acalamari 02:04, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Done it. Thank you for your help. Acalamari 02:09, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
To complete the work, I think User:Acalamari should include the user name of the person who did the retouching as an argument to the {{PD-retouched-user}} template. Otherwise the name of the person releasing the retouching work will be unspecified. If User:Fredrik is the one who did the retouching, he has a PD license release statement on his user page so presumably another editor can correctly assert that Fredrik has released it to the public domain. Would you take a look at this image?

The guy who's trying to have it deleted, first tagged it improperly as not NFCC#10C compliant. When that didn't work out, he retagged it with an equally inappropriate tag that apparently has to be disputed, instead of simply summarily removed. I've moved the image out of the infobox, and it's now illustrating only the stamp, which makes his tagging completely inappropriate. Could you take a look for me? Bellwether BC 05:17, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

  • I just fixed it so that the stamp is mentioned in the article, and the image of the stamp is now illustrating the stamp, as mentioned in the article. I find this whole process of fighting the deletionists for a perfectly good and well-used image, tiresome and tedious. Bellwether BC 05:27, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Beta issue

Hey MB, can you think of any coherent ways forward with all the issues around BC, BCBot and BAG that don't involve ArbCom? I'm canvassing a bit here, moving into a confrontational situation isn't going to help anyone, it will waste lots of time. BC is pretty defiant right now, we need to engage with his friends and supporters to resolve, rather than confront, if that is at all possible. I can probably dredge up lots of neat stuff, I'd really rather be correcting typos os adding wikilinks if I had my druthers. Any suggestions on neutral ways to move forward? Thanks! Mediation

Just letting you know, the case I have been mediating is here. I think I'm doing pretty well so far, sorry I haven't been doing much lessons recently, this case has been consuming me alot. Steve Crossin (talk) 00:42, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

The fact the parties haven't devolved into threaded mini-arguments is amazing. It looks like a very good mediation so far. Given some more experience with it, you might make a good Medcommer or Clerk! MBisanz talk 03:54, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Just a note, I apologise again that I haven't been doing the lessons recently, this case has really used up a lot of my time, but it seems that an agreement could quite likely be formed here. I feel that I've done an OK job on this, they're actually being civil in discussions, which is a good thing. I've also decided to take on a MedCab case, hopefully I have as much sucsess :) Steve Crossin (talk) 05:47, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Don't worry about the lessons. Their always there. If your good at dispute resolution, do that. As you can see below, we have no shortage of disputes around here. MBisanz talk 05:49, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Definetly, there are a lot of disputes going on at the moment. I noticed that the Mediation Committee is currently backlogged with requests, as there is a shortage of active mediators, but this is something I cannot help out with. I might also check out WP:3O, see if I can help out. I'll try getting onto those lessons at some point, but at the moment I seem to be of use in dispute resolution :) I think my current case is drawing to a close, but it's not over till it's over :) Steve Crossin (talk) 05:57, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

An Arbitration case in which you commented has been opened, and is located here. Please add any evidence you may wish the Arbitrators to consider to the evidence sub-page, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Betacommand 2/Evidence. Please submit your evidence within one week, if possible. You may also contribute to the case on the workshop sub-page, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Betacommand 2/Workshop.

Just noticed your entries on the workshop page. Some are rather short, and as such wouldn't really have much chance of being taken up. The tendancy is to either write something longer and original (but that needs a certain skill), or (if you are lazy) to copy from a previous arbitration case. Quick Question

I've done a couple of cases over there. Some more successful than others. Sure, team-mediating is fine by me. MBisanz talk 18:10, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Well which case is it? Assuming I don't have a COI, then sure, I'll help out. MBisanz talk 18:30, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
I'll betray I have a strong bias on the issue. But hopefully one that won't be insuperable on my part. Feel free to open it and I'll add myself in later today as a co-mediator. Since it overlaps with the whole middle east ethnic issues, I pinged one of the guys on the Wikipedia:Working group on ethnic and cultural edit wars to make sure its something that can be mediated. MBisanz talk
  • Okay, thanks for adding yourself as a co-mediator. I checked the RFC very briefly, it seems rather long, but there were a lot of users commenting on it. Everyone posting on the MedCab page might be messy. Suggestions? Steve Crossin (talk) 05:49, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Article talk pages are a good place to create, or subpages of Medcab or Article talk. I haven't reviewed the RfC yet, but yes, we should try to keep the Medcab page relatively clean of threaded discussion. MBisanz talk 05:51, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I read over it. This seems to be exactly what WP:WORKINGGROUP and Arbcom at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Palestine-Israel articles have struggled with finding a solution to. Maybe there is something in that Arbcom case that they used to solve it temporarily? I'd suggest that you get the involved editors to post their proposed wording in formatting boxes on a different page, number with thinks like Proposal 1, 2, etc. That will remove the threaded discussion from from proposed wordings and make it easier to track things. Re:Re:Panda

Thank you muchly for your help... So the fact that the image is of the ACTUAL Panda's in question and that they are the very same as discussed in the page text has no bearing if I can link an image of any old Panda..? This seems illogical to me, its kind of like putting a free image of Niels Bohr on Albert Einstein's page when you wanted to show Einstein in a specific place but only a copyright image was available and saying, "Well its close they were both early 20th century physicists"... List of settlements

I was wondering.... OK, so no consensus was made to create the articles -can we at least get a bot to generate a list of settlements by country and a globe locator by the next of them using falling rain?. If we have a list of settlements in the wikipedia database at least then there is a catalogue of missing articles to work through. I'd rather not have to generate the lists manually. This way if there are many settlments with the same name etc these can be fixed afterwards and we should have a clean list of missing articles ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:58, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Well my main IM program is AIM, so if you want I can email that to you. Also, I do have a Yahoo IM account, just need to download the software for this machine, and an MSN account buried somewhere that I can find. Tell me which one and I'll email you the nickname on that account. I'd suggest we create a proposals page (I'll draft it in my userspace in 10 minutes or so). Since the parties agree that one user can't edit in this area for a week, maybe announcing we'll be putting it on hold until all parties can respond, but that in the meanwhile, they can make proposals. This should give them the chance to get ideas out and think about them, before discussing them with us and each other. MBisanz talk 07:16, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok, here's the page User:MBisanz/MEDCAB-P. Feel free to edit. I'm thinking that not being able to directly comment or thread a discussion under the proposal (or easily associate who put in which proposal), will stop users from directly confronting each other. Also, it will prevent direct voting before we determine there is a need for a poll. MBisanz talk 07:34, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I prefer MSN personally. It's just something I'm used to :). Tegan Summer

Hi Matt,

My wikipedia page (Tegan Summer) that has been edited by my publicist has been tagged for COI and I've noticed on the talk notes from another editor that they 'weren't sure' about the work or our television productions. The majority of the acting credits have references and the television series is verifiable via the Setanta Sports North American website. The publicist wrote this via my internet network and both of us are completely free of bias when editing the factual data. This isn't self promotion.

Please help as we would like to keep these pages.

Thanks

Hi Matt, It's Lavinia again. I need some help choosing a copyright for a PDF file that contains an article from Los Angeles Times where Dr. David Levy quotations are often mentioned. I have this article from Dr. David Levy and I intend to use this file in his biography David Levy psychologist. David Levy has written permission from Los Angeles Times to reprint this article on wikipedia. Please let me know if I could send you an email with the permission. The reason for this image(PDF file) is to replace the external link on David Levy's page 'Los Angeles Times: Levy analyzes L.A. Lakers, part 1' since Los Angeles Time archives the article after 3 months from the publish date. I would also like to mention that I have 2 similar files to replace another 2 external links from David Levy's biography (part 2 and part 3). Yesterday, I uploaded the file on wikipedia (not commons) and it was immediatley deleted. I specified as much details about the file and I also added more info in the discussion tab. [17]. I used {{PermissionAndFairUse}} in the summary. What can I do to add the file on wikipedia and to not be deteled? Please let me know if I could provide you with any information so I could be allowed to upload this image. Thanks, --LaviniaVasilache (talk) 20:41, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Good Morning. Or Afternoon. I saw a change on your page, and I thought I'd say Hi xD. Just wondering, has anyone contacted you regarding the I-P dispute yet? Steve Crossin (talk to me) 20:48, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Nope, no word from that case. Maybe they got tired. MBisanz talk 20:53, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you/Correction

Matt,

Thanks for the quick reply.

The publicist will definitely follow your good advice and find references for Tegan Summer outside of IMDB for the page.

One correction; On The Bench isn't on for ten days, it's a six week series aired in the USA (DirecTV, Dish Network, Broadband), Australia and Canada; the first of Setanta Sports' original programming in the USA. Thank you for offering to fight for the page should it come up.

Have a good week,

Best

Tegan Summer Productions

Matt,

I agree with your comments.

Please delete the Tegan Summer Productions page as soon as possible; we'll wait for the debut of our next few shows that have been commissioned etc.

Clean-up attempted for review please.

Hi Matt,

We decided to get the ball rolling and have cleaned up the Tegan Summer page; we added numerous citations in addition to imdb for verification and cut a lot of text and unverifiable content, especially for NPOV purposes.

At this stage, we'd like to take you up on the offer of hands-on editing assistance with this page if you feel it requires it after our attempted clean-up.

We would love to keep it.

Regards

Tegan Summer Tegan Summer (talk) 03:07, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

Matt,

Really appreciate the help over the last couple of days. I'll leave the Tegan Summer page to your discretion (apart from the two citations you added tonight).

Have a good week.

Best

Re: Cat intersections

I know there's a toolserver thing that does this – I'll look around and dig it up for you. east718 (talk) 19:01, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

I tried running the intersection between Category:All non-free media and Category:Free images and it crashed the Wikimedia toolserver before it could give me results. If you want, I'll bounce you a script to do it yourself, but it'll eat up lots of your bandwidth. The first intersection would also take forever, but there's an easier way: just compare this with Category:Non-free image copyright tags. Hope this helps. east718 (talk) 18:30, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
I'll put together something that'll run on your computer. east718 (talk) 02:22, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Matt, I mentioned you here to Belovedfreak, so I'm cc'ing you for your reference. - Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for your recent comments and edits on Tegan Summer. I have further deleted lost or unverifiable data on the page, but I'd like you to consider a couple of things with our last attempted clean-up. MBisanz has also been helping us with the page as we'd like to keep it. User talk:MBisanz

1) The Wiki contributor for our projects occasionally works out of the office and used the same network. I was recently instructed while we are in discussion about the page, to be the only user for edits other than yourselves. (autobiographical tag / coi tag)

2) My parents are first generation Barbadians, but there is nothing online to back that up. I'd really appreciate it if you left this statement on the page as it speaks to our heritage – thanks.

3) The Knights of Mary Phagan citation: The Naacp Theatre Awards informed us they only keep the last three years [18] of archived nomination listings on their site. Our/my nominated year was 2003 at the 13th annual awards. The Backstage West article that I cited mentions the nominations in the body of the article. We'd love for this to remain. We can scan and send official documentation from the Naacp from that year.

Those are our only requests outside of the data that we've further deleted.

Again, thank you for the help.

Kind regards

Tegan Summer Tegan Summer (talk) 15:59, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey MBisanz. I see from WP:ANI that you've been rather busy with important sockpuppet things. I wonder if you can advise what might be done next with the CAMERA thread. The latest intriguing report, known only from an opposing blog, is that CAMERA seems to have been recruiting volunteers to edit Wikipedia who are willing to offset the work of 'anti-Israel editors.' Though the original report has lingered for a while without much patroller comment, that may be interpreted different ways. Either nobody sees a problem, or no-one wants to jump into a Middle East-related issue that could be intractable. Would you have an interest in looking over the list of edits by User:Gni to see if they appear neutral? Since that might take some time, if you have other ideas for what to do next, I'd appreciate hearing any. If you're too busy for this, no response is needed. Thanks! EdJohnston (talk) 16:19, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your analysis, and your proposal at WP:COIN about what to do. EdJohnston (talk) 13:40, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I see you just tried something similar to what I did (look at the history). I only had to add a blank (outside of the infobox template) to restore the link-to in town-seal image page. Your edit probably would have done the same thing. Note that the Madison, Connecticut was restored by a bot after vandalism, and I suspect that's when the trouble began. Anyway, it's all straightened out now. The wikimedia developer/maintainers should be made aware that this kind of incident is possible following a restoration from vandalism. I don't know whom to contact about that. Karl Hahn (T) (C) 19:37, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

CAMERA article

Hi MBisanz -- I agree with your sentiments in your outside view of the CAMERA COI issue, but I'm not sure why you are recommending that I not edit the article for 30 days. I was the editor who brought to the attention of the project that a long time editor of the article and other related articles --Gni--was actually editing the article from CAMERA's offices. All my edits to the article are well sourced. I've engaged in zero sock puppetry and meat puppetry, edited only under my user name, and have made an effort to tone down the preponderance of non-notable CAMERA commentaries inserted on a number of Wiki articles by proponents of CAMERA, including Gni. The edit warring has been conducted by Gni against a number of editors trying to maintain balance in the article. I have no conflict of interest with the article. Boodlesthecat Meow? 06:27, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Well OK then! I think I've caught all the mice that were hiding in the CAMERA article anyway Boodlesthecat Meow? 06:41, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Admin coaching presentation at next NYC meetup

Great idea, I'd be glad to schedule you in. You might want to consider whether you want some sort of really simple poor-man's-powerpoint like DGG's User:DGG/LG and User:DGG/LR. Or I guess you could work right off of Wikipedia:Admin coaching.--Pharos (talk) 21:23, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Hmm... I don't actually have much experience with PowerPoint myself, but I do know they have Mac OS editions. The equipment we use would be whatever laptops are handy. User:ScienceApologist always brings his, and if he doesn't have the software, someone else probably would. Best to ask him first, though.--Pharos (talk) 03:31, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
When Pharos talks about my "powerpoint" he means it is not powerpoint, but simply a WP userspace page with a list of WP page links on which I clicked in turn to get to the next page i wanted to show. It's actually a replacement for screenshots. If you want a cheap PowerPoint, experiment with Google Docs. Works best with Firefox. DGG (talk) 21:23, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that is exactly what I meant by "poor-man's-powerpoint".--Pharos (talk) 23:06, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Matt,

The On The Bench images (2) were deleted even though we had (CC-BY-SA) licenses attached.. My company owns the pictures outright. The formatting of the text is now off as a result.

Can you restore the automated deletion of the show logo and a picture of the host, Sabra Williams. Can you also revert the format to how you had it before the Autobot changed the structure due to Williams' photo not being there.

Best,

Admins at ANI weigh in on CAMERA

Hi Matt. Seems as though MastCell has formalized a remedy here. Since I don't disagree, and since you were requesting something similar at COIN anyway, I don't plan to add anything to that thread. It's my hope that someone (perhaps encouraged by the COIN discussion) will go around and correct any failures of neutrality that may have occurred in various articles, so there is still a bit of work to do. EdJohnston (talk) 22:48, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi – I'm not hearing much in the way of objection to my proposed remedy, so I'm going to go ahead with it – but if you think it's a bad idea or would like to try something different, I'm open to suggestions. Just let me know. MastCell Talk 16:36, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
Since MastCell appeared to be desiring input from several people concerned, I added my own comment at the ANI thread. I think it was worth the effort for User:Gni and I to correspond by email, though I didn't make any promises to him about what action other admins might take, and my concerns are certainly taken care of by MastCell's solution. I like the idea that this article ban is consolidated under the Log of Blocks and Bans at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Palestine-Israel articles. Since it's not the type of issue that shows up every day at WP:COIN, I'm glad it's being watched by the people who have worked more in that particular area. Matt, merci beaucoup. For the welcome to Wikipedia! My mother sang this songAu Clair de la Lune (song) to me when I was so little. Then on March 27, 2008, I learned that the very first recording EVER of a human voice, was a lady, singing Au Clair de la Lune, in 1860. I just had to start an English wiki version of the song, I think it was in the middle of the night. Now there are so many alterations to that entry. Re: New issue

Try opening a command prompt and doing a ping -w 1000 rr.pmtpa.wikimedia.org. If it fails, you most likely have a malfunctioning firewall or a DNS issue; restarting Windows should fix that. If it succeeds, a dev probably noticed you loading thousands of pages and instructed the servers to reject any python requests from you. east718 (talk) 06:32, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Turn ZoneAlarm off and restart your computer. east718 (talk) 07:07, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Bandwidth shouldn't really be an issue as I designed the script to attempt to load only one page at any given instantaneous moment... you should be using only around 25 kB/s bandwidth constantly – a pittance – but then again, the runtime is very long and 25 kB/s adds up to more than 2 GB a day. east718 (talk) 07:46, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Interesting

I don't think there are any "set" rules for this type of thing. My point with Equazcion was that Riana intentionally posted to AN/I, not MfD, and that starting an MfD for someone like that isn't really appropriate. As for using this as a precedent, I would generally say it's best not to move people's comments too far from where they placed them unless there's a legitimate need. Hi Matt. Since I have been off-wiki for a while, I guess this may have been addressed. In {{Calm talk}} there was a hidden comment right in the template advising that all interwiki links should be placed in /doc. AkhtaBot was placing interwikis in a place the comment advised against. There are template experts who could advise you better than me, for instance the gang at WP:VPT.EdJohnston (talk) 19:26, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Another wrinkle is that only AkhtaBot's *template* edits need to be fixed, from what I have seen. In a very cursory check I didn't see any problem with AkhtaBot's article edits. EdJohnston (talk) 19:44, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
There were fewer than 250 template edits (I think) and the ones I looked at have all been reverted, including a few that didn't need to be :-) EdJohnston (talk) 21:08, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

I'll tell you one thing. April Fools is over, and I am glad. Now we can actually get back to work, without having to deal with reports like these. I wasn't impressed either, I messaged them too User talk:Diligent Terrier#AIV Report. Jokes are all good and well, but AIV is not an apropriate place to to so. And people reporting themselves? I'd have continued on with the "joke", and blocked them for half an hour. For disrupting AIV. I got cranky at them, too. User talk:Rgoodermote#AIV Report.. And the admin who told them to do it as well, I had a word with him. User talk:Tiptoety#RE Rgoodermote. And, reports like [19] these, get under my skin. AIV still gets legit reports, no matter what day it is. It's no place for jokes. Steve Crossin (talk to me) 03:04, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

He's already been told this at least three times, both in the unblock replies and while he was emailing me (until I asked him to stop because I'd already declined two unblocks and didn't need to do any more). He's also been told three times now to take the matter to ArbCom (me, you, you again) if he wants to get unblocked, but as he (in my view) refuses to see why what he did was wrong, and he has two checkusers against him, I highly doubt even that's going to get anywhere. I'm not unblocking him, nor do I support unblocking him; but as I've been overly involved already, I'm not going to tell you not to either. Hi there – I've marked the above case as closed. The two socks have been indef blocked, and I can't see any merit in blocking Gooddays (who has come off his block but neither edited generally, nor commented specifically on the SSP case). Would it be appropriate to mark his card with a suitable warning about refraining from using socks to evade blocks in the future? GBT/C 11:48, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Ah, I didn't realize it was featured. The page just kept popping up for me. I should've realized it was featured. I know the policy is not to protect featured articles except in extreme cases. 'Tis a shame. I guess the solution is for active users to watchlist each featured article. Enigma msg 16:24, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

PD-textlogo question

Hi, could I get your opinion on an image? I have been reviewing the logos of a few musical groups to see if some would qualify to be filed under {{PD-textlogo}} rather than fair use and I am a bit at a loss in regard to this one. It appears to be a simple enough typeface/geometry combination though not quite as simple as the logos of, say, ABBA or Nine Inch Nails. – Cyrus XIII (talk) 17:54, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Will do. Thanks for the quick reply! – Cyrus XIII (talk) 18:06, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Have commented on an IP address userpage that the vandalism tag you placed is their second warning. Reverting a nonvandal edit

I was monitoring some IRC channels and i came upon this [21] Clearly it was not vandalism as the user was trying to help getting rid of some nonsense. I have reverted your edit and would ask you to look again at what you are reverting next time. Thanks ~ LegoKontribsTalkM 05:44, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I think that user blanking numerous talk pages is problematic, regardless of whether it's removing nonsense or not. Enigma msg 03:52, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
True, but I did revert and edit that was not vandalism, and that is something I should not do. Two wrongs don't make a right. MBisanz talk 06:18, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
No doubt. It's similar to something that happened a few weeks ago. I reverted and warned for something, but reverting and warning was not the proper step in that case. The user I reverted wasn't doing things properly either. I was just commenting that if you look at the user in question's contributions, you'll see a marked pattern. Re

That "Linking to external harassment" thing is bogus, and not policy. If the user wants to be hidden from criticism of this site, they should not be on the internet. Furthermore, although when I browsed the wikipediareview.com, there were some posts that were unfavorable (like some of the identifying people posts), but the viewers should be able to decide what is "harassing" for them or not. As for the reliable sources thing, I consider Kohs' research to be reliable, but if you don't, discussions, not warnings, should help. You also seem to be biased towards the linking to external evil monsters' sites guideline, because you cite what is not policy and imply that it is such. --User:Iambus | talk 08:28, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Closed FPC

No problem! Really, though, this shouldn't be a turn-off or anything. It certainly wasn't a bad idea—it's a nice picture that didn't quite meet the technical standards. Stick around FPC and see what voters like and don't like, and certainly don't hesitate to make another nomination if you see a picture that you think deserves featured status. If you're concerned about the eligability of a picture, check out picture peer review and someone can give you a go-ahead before you nominate. Thegreenj 17:59, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Question

Thanks for the welcome you sent my way after I made the Canada Cup of Soccer page.

I have a question for you. I was editing the Trevor Linden page and deleting content that had been added. (Someone had copy and pasted his "early life" section to make it get up to 244000 character, when I deleted that the Cluebot gave me a warning. How do I get rid of this warning?

Re: Adminship

This is in reply to what you posted on my talk page about the RfA. Since you've been involved with the Admin coaching program, would you recommend I get an admin coach first? I'm currently under Editor Review and I do chat with admins when I have questions about matters, but perhaps entering the program would be beneficial? I'd like to hear your thoughts about my specific situation. Thanks for taking an interest, Enigma message Review 02:57, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Ouch. I just looked at the requests page, and it's horribly backlogged. It appears there aren't nearly enough coaches to match demand. A bit unfortunate, because some of the cases look nowhere near close to passing an RfA, but many people wish to become admins. This isn't likely to change anytime soon, either. :) Enigma message Review 03:00, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

I understand. As one of the main participants, you've got as many as you can handle, and I'm sure the same can be said for the other major admin coaches. One thing I want to point out is that you changed your stance. You first said sure-fire pass in 2 weeks or so, given some AFCs (I started that tonight). Then you said 1.5-2 months. Personally, I lean towards the latter approach. It's hard to project RfAs, but I couldn't see myself passing in the next few weeks. I hope to get at least one article to DYK. I have a few ideas in mind for that. As always, any thoughts are appreciated. Enigma message Review 03:17, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
I've heard many times on RfAs that the standards are much more rigorous now than they were say, a year or two ago. I was also reading the discussion on the RfA talk page. However, I don't see things getting any easier. I suppose I'll leave the timing issue to those who have a better handle on it than I. Enigma message Review 03:38, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

PIO again

Mate, you're probably already aware of this but it's getting a little heated between Guy0307 and PIO over at PIO's alternate talk page. Check the diffs [22], especially Guy's latest contribution. PIO keeps deleting whatever Guy writes, causing Guy to write something stronger, so I don't know if it might be worth protecting the page? PIO e-mailed Arbcom Friday trying to get himself unbanned as Jxy. Are we still awaiting a result on that? Is that why he can still edit the page? Many thanks, AlasdairGreen27 (talk) 06:44, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Get Huggle? I've been using it for weeks! See the WP:HUG talk page. I applied for NPW because you recommended it. Now that I think of it, I have marked a few as speedy on Huggle (ones where the original editor blanked the page). I blanked this page because it's just a redirect page (created by mistake, as you'll see if you check the revision history of the main talk page and of the user who created this "archive" page), so I blanked it because I misinterpreted the "Redirects for discussion" page as meaning that this was the only action needed to get rid of this page. I suspect that it's the presence of this spurious redirect page that's causing the equally spurious (and misleading) "Archives: 1" line in the talk header box.

Perhaps the deletion (or proposal for deletion) could be dealt with properly. -- 217.171.129.74 (talk) 06:44, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Removal of AfD template

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with Gino Castignoli. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. Thank you. Given that you are an administrator and your removal of the AfD notice came only one minute after it was added, your behavior seems particularly egregious. --71.191.135.128 (talk) 04:12, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bank of new york.gif)

Thanks for uploading File:Bank of new york.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. NotifyBot (talk) 14:06, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

I did a few more, this image stuff is effin' hard! You actually have to investigate and evaluate, I'm starting to appreciate the shoot-the-bots and ignore-it-all approach :) I'll try a few tomorrow, meanwhile in re this (+see [24] & [25]) and this one where I stopped, am I correct that downloading or scanning an image of a presumably-copyrighted work does not give you any subsidiary copyrights, unless you add some artistic value? That is, creating an exact copy doesn't obligate you to add a public-domain release, and in fact prevents you from asserting or releasing any rights over the image? Sorry to involve you in my education about images, but it's an area I feel I should know more about. (And btw, I fall on the side of keeping threads on the talk page where they started, not cross-posting ;) Franamax (talk) 06:20, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Image use

Hi. I didn't actually tag File:YCFC1922.jpg as non-free. I just added a fair use rationale since a FU template that was there and empty. But there's no reason for FU to be asserted as long as everyone's 100% sure the image was published (not taken) before 1 January 1923. The Rambling Man (talk) 06:46, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

The source needs to assert that it was published before 1 Jan 1923, not taken in 1922. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:24, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Admin Coaching

Thanks for getting back to me on this! I am adopted (sort of) by two other admins: Tim Vickers, and The Transhumanist. The latter suggested that I have at least 1000 edits down, before I seek adminship. And, I have been active on Wikipedia for 4 months (first edit: January 12th, 2008). And, as I keep explaining, I really am not a newbie, as I have been watching how people edit, follow the rules, etc... for awhile before I officially signed up (why didn't I? I didn't know If I would be allowed to). So, I kind of stopped requesting a while ago :-) However, I will request again, after I have reached 1000 edits. Why should Durres have alternate names in Greek, Latin, Turkish, Serbian, Bulgarian, etc. and greek cities do not have the same thing? I tried to add the turkish name to Thesaloniki (where there was a majority of greeks prior to 1900) and it was reverted. This is what wikipedia is? I do not think so... Whats your opinion?

I'm protecting the established version of the page. You need to discuss such changes on the article talk pages if their reverted. Each article is treated on its own for deciding which things to add, so that may be the reason. MBisanz talk 07:45, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

It'll spit out two files: list1.txt will be the difference between Category:Fair use images and Category:All non-free media; list2.txt will be the intersection between Category:All non-free media and Category:Free images. You'll probably need to open those text files in Firefox instead of your text editor. Hope this helps! east.718 at 22:39, March 26, 2008

If you want to run it error-free, open up imagebot.py in notepad and remove the line that says "print page.titleWithoutNamespace()". The downside is that you won't know what's going on when you actually run it though. east.718 at 20:17, March 27, 2008
It'll save the text files in your python directory. Also, 100 hours seems really excessive for a runtime, especially if you're still on Category:Fair use images. Scripts like this are really bad at crunching large amounts of data compared to relational databases – I have a feeling that it's using up all your computer's resources. But if you really want to see this through to the end... east.718 at 18:47, April 3, 2008

"Certain Other Editors"

MB,
I noted your question on SqueakBox's page and figured that I was "certain other editors". I was only "eager" to vote opposite because, as I would support the RFA, it seemed as though SqueakBox's jumping-the-gun needed some balance. It might have been a little POINT-y, literally copying the words and formatting and all, but that was the point of the point. How could it "look" like it was live? I went to the main RfA page and his was not listed. I agree with the others that Squeak had to be watching or stalking for this so as to attack it at its earliest possibility. His "oppose" was two minutes – TWO MINUTES – after the "I accept" was put on the page, and as has been point out, long before it was officially live.
Anyway, I have seen him in discussions and don't always agree with him, but I support the RfA. As for off-wiki happenings, that's part of the problem with having them... it strengthens the "secret society" feeling that a lot of people seem to have (from the oft-made references to "The Cabal" – something I have never made reference to).
FWIW, I have nothing against you. I have worked hard in the past to work with SqueakBox as well, even making consessions to try and smooth things over. For my trouble, I have been blocked for making general statements while enduring pointedly direct, targeted personal attacks. Anyway, I deal. I'm working on being less WikiDragon-ish and to stay out of WikiPolitics (at least not be involved as much as I have – less WikiStress).
I know that doesn't help understand why SB voted oppose, but now you understand why I voted in support when I did... I support the RfA, though, because I have confidence in Martijn and his ability. For the record. VigilancePrime 03:07 (UTC) 27 Mar '08 :-)
Thanks for the note. I would point out that, in spite of "exact polar opposites in every situation ", SqueakBox and I have actually agreed once or twice before. Usually because I made a HUGE point about agreeing with him. I don't think he's ever said "I agree with VP". Ah well. We're not that much different in the grand scheme of things. We just have different views on neutrality versus populartrality. And I don't recall any reason or instance that would make me have any beef with you either. I do know we've disagreed in terms of scope or degree, but generally even then it's only scope or degree, and not the master, core issue. As I recall, at least.
Have a great day/night/whatever! VigilancePrime 03:35 (UTC) 27 Mar '08 :-)

RfA Thanks

Excuse me, but I am not a sock of Shapiros10. The only reason our base IP adresses are the same is because he helped me create my account over by his place, so we used his CPU. He is not a sock puppeteer, and his account should be unblocked. Thank you.Stjimmy61892 17:12, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Shared IP blocks

Please use {{schoolblock}} and {{anonlblock}} when blocking Shared IPs. Blocking with the reason "Vandalism" only confuses other people on the same network and leads to more irate/confused emails on the already highly time-consuming unblock-en-l mailing list. If you have time, please go back over your blocking log and change the block reasons where necessary for any block that are a month or more long. --  Netsnipe  ►  17:47, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Whoopsie. Apparently Huggle does add those sorts of templates when blocking. I went back and added {{Anonblock|sig=~~~~ }} to all of my IP blocks longer than 48 hours that didn't already have a school header to them. In the future, if I'm blocking more than 24 hours, I'll drop a template in the block summary and on the IP page. Thanks for catching my error. MBisanz talk 20:24, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

You only need to use anonblock/schoolblock when you're blocking a Shared IP and you should be choosing them in the drop down reason list. A lot of people don't bother reading their IP talk page before they fire off emails to unblock-en-l. --  Netsnipe  ►  02:11, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

My understanding is that it's OK to use the Wikipedia logo for internal use like this. There was a dustup over the similar image File:Wikipedia book.jpg and it all ended up with the image being restored. There might be info about this on the talk pages or logs for these files. If you think its necessary, though, I can write to the foundation and get formal approval from them. Herostratus (talk) 14:37, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, right, fair use under parody. Herostratus (talk) 14:42, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, as I pointed out this is fair use under parody, pretty clearly. That I am parodying ourselves rather than a second party is immaterial. If Joe's Parody Website (or Mad Magazine) had created and was using these images we would be in no position to demand their removal. I guess you could take it to WP:IFD and see what happens, although I'm not sure that that is a broad enough venue. I can't create another version even if I wanted to since I no longer have access to Photoshop; possibly a request for image could be put in. As far as getting the permission of the Foundation, I don't think this is necessary since its fair use. Herostratus (talk) 15:09, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, it's fair use under parody. We don't really need a free version. We couldn't get a free version of the logo anyway. What we could get, in theory, is the permission of the foundation to use the logo for the service awards on the web site en.wikipedia.org. It must be possible to obtain this permission, since the the logo is used on each page of en.wikipedia.org (and other sites) and this cannot be done without permission.

To go into a bit more detail on parody: these images, any informed and rational person would concede, are not used in a way such as to constitute a serious usurption of the Foundation's mark: no informed and rational person would believe that there actually was a 1937 print edition of Wikipedia, or that there is a My First Book of Wikipedia. No, these are intended to (gently) poke fun at the Wikipedia by parodying its attitude of grandiosity and claim to universality. This is parody, and it is specifically protected. The Foundation has exactly the same right to request the removal of these images as they would to prevent Mad Magazine from printing this type of parody image, which is to say, no right.

OR in other words, the sovereign entity Wikimedia Foundation may not say to the (for this purpose) sovereign entity English Wikipedia "You may not make fun of me."

(Now, there is the interesting side issue that en.wikipedia.org is not a parody site. The board of the English Wikipedia (as distinct from the Wikimedia Foundation, the owner of the rights to the logo) could, in theory, say "we do not engage in parody, therefore remove this unencyclopedic parody material". I suppose that there might be some mechanism for the Wikimedia Foundation to order the English Wikipedia to do that. But that's an entirely different issue, one of corporate governance and chain of command rather than copyright and trademark. And since they haven't done and won't do that, it's not an issue here.

Incidentally, I'm generally fairly hawkish on use of images. For instance, did you know that your use of Wikipe-tan on your use page is probably illegal? It is a de facto trademark of Wikimedia. Granted it is not a registered trademark, but trademarks do not have to be registered to be enforceable. (Obviously your task of arguing trademark infringement is a court of law is much simplified if your trademark is registered, which is why people register trademarks; but it's not necessary.) You have exactly the same right to display an image of Wikipe-tan as you would if you were running Joe's Fabulous Encyclopedia and using Wikipe-tan to try to make people think that your encyclopedia is Wikipedia. (Actually not, since matters of intent and effect come heavily into play, but I mean in theory.)

Now, if the Board were to decide that fair use images are not allowed on the Wikipedia, that also would possibly be a different matter (not legally, but as a matter of corporate governance). But they haven't done that.

I am not a lawyer, but I think that your only case is to argue that these images are not parody. If they are parody they are protected, I'm pretty sure. I'm not an expert on parody so I'm not certain that these images qualify as parody, but I think that they do.

I'm not sure where to go next. I guess one option would be to ask you (provided that I have not convinced you of my case) to just forget the whole complicated issue, which if pursued will suck up a lot of oxygen. Failing that, as we both agree I don't think that WP:IFD would be a good venue since only a few people watch that and this is a bigger issue than we should leave to couple random people to decide. I guess a Request for Comment might be order. Ball's in your court.

Before you run the bot

No offense, but considering how bold some people are these days I'm not sure if you are willing to wait for more community input or not. Regardless, myself, and likely most Wikipedians, are not opposed to greatly decreasing our usage of official logos, but there are likely far better ways to go about it. Personally, I don't think a total ban in the userspace is even necessary, but we'll see where that goes. For the "definite's", calm and planned replacements should be rolled out. If you simply run the bot with cold-turkey image removal, things will no doubt turn into an epic shit storm. I beg of you to consider this. -- Ned Scott 02:58, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Ned, I turned down ST47's implication of a speedy approve. I said I want to wait some days for discussion and what not. I'm well aware if I tried to run the bot, it, and me, would be blocked instantaneously. Until I have a clear bot approval I'm not even contemplating running this task. New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:43, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey MB, you're at the intersection of image and bot knowledge. We have a small problem with commons image deletion at the CWNB noticeboard. There are some non-PD images that we will need to upload here under FUR while we can still see them at commons. My question here is: how do we avoid detection of duplicate images between en:wiki and commons, we need to re-upload the images to en:wiki as non-free and write the rationales, but whilst we're doing that, is a bot going to come along and detect the dupe and CSD-nom it on en:wiki? Thanks! Franamax (talk) 21:44, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding [28]

I have posted no such information. The edit I am assuming that this refers to is not a threat to post such information, and I am not in possesion of the information in question.

The edit in question is pointing out that our Right to vanish is a right granted to users that are exercicing their right to leave. This is seperate but related to the priniciple that real world identeties of editors should be protected. In particular note that [[WP:Right to vanish#What vanishing is not|]] states;

  1. Vanishing does not apply to users not leaving.
  2. Deletion of information giving real world identity of a user is not vanishing.

Right to vanish is explicitly the right of an editor leaving the project to disasociate himself from the edits he have made while he was active.

In short, I have no problem with a user wishing to disassociate himself from a former username. I feel that this a right that should be extended in all but extreme cases. I do have a problem with an active user invoking the right to vanish in requesting this right. Taemyr (talk) 12:16, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

It seems to me that if the editor wants to get it across that her desires in this case is backed by policy it would be better if the reference was to a policy that applies. Rather than one that explicitly does not apply. So rather than saying I have been known under a previous name, but changed names under the Right to Vanish. Please do not mention that name on my talk page, I would like to keep it private. It should say something like I have been known under a previous username, but do not wish this name to be mentioned. Per applicable policy failure to respect this wish is considered harassments. Taemyr (talk) 21:13, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Request to reconsider banning

While trying to understand how to properly deal with vandalism, I stumbled upon a page of User:Riana. While I'm sure he/she had the best of intentions, Riana apparently did something very unfair to one contributor. Because the contributor in question was rather easily angered, this escalated into him vandalizing Riana's page, and subsequently getting banned.

I read the user's comments, and I agree it's very hard to communicate with him. However, in all honesty, the origin of this problem was a grave mistake by Riana. Here's what happened:

  • The user in question, User talk:Shadow Blaze, made an edit to a Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds page; his edits were extremely helpful (he typed in several pages worth of useful and unique information)
  • Apparently, being inexperienced, he blanked out the page before applying the edits; note that his full update included both his own text, as well as the original content of the page. See here, around 26 October 2007; you can see blank page – reversal – blank page - <new text> – reversal. The <new text> included the original content plus a lot of hand-typed information by Shadow Blaze
  • Riana AV bot auto-reverted his edits, including not only the blanking, but the useful edits as well (see see here for the changes that were reverted)
  • Shadow Blaze, being an easily angered person, went on rampage changing pages left and right; in no way do I condone what he did, but he certainly did that in what he felt was a just revenge for a random edit reversal by an admin
  • No one bothered to explain to Shadow Blaze that his edits were reverted by mistake; no one bothered to put those hand-typed edits back; basically as far as he could see, thousands of words he typed in were just erased by an evil admin for no reason; I'm an admin myself, so I know how AV bots work, but few regular contributors know that
  • Shadow Blaze changed the vandalism warning on his own talk page to make a saracstic joke out of it (note that the vandalism warning was really wrong to begin with); he also did some inappropriate (but frankly, not that terrible) changes to other pages
  • After some back-and-forth, Shadow Blaze is banned, and his repeated requests to be unblocked are denied in a language that he clearly did not understand

Again, I'm not saying that any admin did anything wrong intentionally. But in my opinion, great injustice was done to Shadow Blaze. Instead of a warm welcome and an apology for the removal of his edits, he got a rubber-stamp vandalism warning just because he accidentally blanked a page before saving the page with the proper text. All his edits were destroyed, and no explanation for that was given (the correct explanation would have been "Riana used an anti-vandal bot that is not perfect, and Riana didn't bother to manually check the history of the changes that the bot reverted).

I have no relationship with Shadow Blaze whatsoever, never seen or heard of him until today. But I request your kind attention in fixing this injustice. I recommend that despite inappropriate behavior on the part of Shadow Blaze, you apologize to him for the loss of his edits from 21 October, 2007. And explain to him that the whole debacle was started from a misunderstanding due to the AV bot reacting too fast to recent changes. I know that you probably will never get an apology from Shadow Blaze himself for his wrongful "revenge" behavior, but the point of being an admin is being able to apologize for one's and one's colleagues mistakes, even when the other side isn't willing to apologize for theirs.

I belive that it is the admins' duty to speak the language of the contributors, not the other way round. Blaming a contributor because he did not understand some legalistic language of wikipedia policies is not right. If there's any way at all to keep communication with the contributor going, it is, IMO, the responsibility of an admin to do so. We cannot assume every contributor is capable of a court-of-law level of argument.

Thank you for your message. I only wanted to bring to your attention what I perceived as an injustice in which you unwittingly played a part. It is up to you whether or not you agree, and what action, if any, you wish to take. My feeble attempt to fix one small injustice ends here: I have neither time nor interest to take any further action. This is off my conscience now. Best of luck in your work. Mmoroz (talk) 11:04, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
P.S. I read some more about various wikipedia issues, and realized that I was far too idealistic. Please ignore my earlier appeals to admin duties, etc. I now understand that wikipedia admins don't have the time to hand-hold easily angered users, or else no useful work would ever be done on wikipedia. I come from a background of a very small wikia community, and the complexities of wikipedia are far beyond anything I could imagine. Again, sorry for making rather presumptuous comments earlier. Feel free to remove this whole thread -- I would, but not sure whether I'm supposed to be deleting resolved issues from other people's talk pages. All best, Mmoroz (talk) 11:43, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

RE:IP-block-exempt

Well, ignoring the whole WP:AGF rant that I could give, I shall answer you. When the accountcreator rights was created, I went to give my alternate account that right and saw the new user right IP-block-exempt. From what I read about it, it was a right that my admin account already has, which is editing through an IP block, thus giving it to my alternate account was not a problem at all. Now I edit at a university often, and I figured that that IP may be blocked one of these days and being able to edit through my alternate account would be nice even if the IP was blocked. Now I have no clue how it "looks rather questionable for an admin to be giving another known account of their's a right that would permit it to evade autoblocking." Its a known account of mine, so if it does stupid stuff you know where to look. It is nothing that my admin account cant do. I mean if I am missing something here, please do enlighten me, but from what I understand, it is the same thing as editing with my admin account. Also, MBisanz, I see you around a lot and respect your opinion here, but in the future, just ask me for an explanation, the little undertone that I am doing something on wrong kind of offended me. Hope this explains, and jeez if it really matters Ill remove it. It isnt that important to me. « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 04:10, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I still really don't get your reasoning. If I had abusive socks and my IP was autoblocked, would I not be able to still edit through my admin account? And I don't get this comment "And if someone isn't currently hitting a rangeblock, keeping them unflagged will keep the userright's list smaller and more monitorable." I still really don't see why its that big of a deal, but if your this crazy about it, then feel free to remove it. I don't care.[[User:Gonzo fan200 « Gonzo fan2007]] (talkcontribs) @ 04:30, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I mean I understand the admin socking thing with recent events taken into account, but you can be the first to block me if you ever see a disruptive edit from any of my accounts :) Hah, personally I didn't know how recent that right started, and that there are only 4 accounts that have it. Im going to remove it, Ill probably never need anyway. Thanks for the chat ;-) Cheers, « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 04:46, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Applications/Enforcement of Username Policy

Hi MBisanz, could you please explain to me why you blocked Atlantichurricanecenter. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 09:09, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I am wishing that we could do these things more nicely, but counterbalanced with not macking administration more difficult. I imaging that asking for every such block to be peronally explained might be too burdonsome, especially considering that many such accounts are test accounts, alternative accounts or even vandalism-only accounts. However a few will be newbie good faith. What would you think of having a more gently written template, even going so far as to allude to a likelihood of the template slapper having made a mistake, and offering the user the "right" to have their case discussed, probably at WP:RFCN. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 01:10, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

PIO's back

Hi Matt, just to let you know that PIO is back, editing today as 151.67.84.100. He's got a rotating IP set up, having previously been seen (for example) as 151.67.85.112, 151.67.84.93 and 151.67.84.199. Not sure there's much we can do about it, given that it's a dynamic IP, but I thought I'd let you know. Many thanks, AlasdairGreen27 (talk) 16:09, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Re:userpage

The assaults appear to have stopped. If you look here you can see there were two editors that continued to place the tag. These two users were in a now closed case of confirmed sock puppeting so it was really just one user trying to place the tag. I am not terribly concerned with editing my user page as I am with being a target terribly disturbing rants like this one which also appears on Plate King's talk page who happens to be blocked also in connection with the socks who were tagging me. Coren bot

Please can you get Coren Bot to stop taggin my new Burmese articles as copies. Its driving me up the wall getting bot messages twice a minute. I've devised a way to get two articles a minute onto here, Burma at present which has 38,000 places so far I am about 1/38 the way through. I'm still certain the articles could be generated automatically from maplandia though ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:34, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

LOL. Thanks for your help anyway. According to Sadamelik I became public enemy #1 with 82 articles coren attacked. Quite suiting for a leading bald evil villain huh? Well I'm making steady progress through countries. I'm just about to start the Districts of Laos. Once this is done district templates with towns and villages etc will be drawn up like I have done for Template:Chipwi Township in Burma etc. If you take a look at the Chipw template, there are 18 townships like that in Kachin State alone. Then there are 14 states/divisions of Burma many of them larger than this!! And that just Burma! I started developing some areas of Africa in detail too like Togo and Central Africa Republic. Structually district/provincial articles are extremely important to building geographical content on here and enhancing coverage and focus evenly globally. I remain confident that it is possible but will require serious manpower or botpower to achieve. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:00, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I hope we can find something eventually too. Basically I wish I had the ability to bot ten articles like Tsawlang a minute and get every country covered like so. Given time I'm certain more info will become available and wikipedia will become outrageously developed beyond belief! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:05, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

We can use Maplandia as a source for these things. This is a TOP PRIORITY, and I hope you can write ourselves a bot. I don't know anything about such things but I would love to be able to stop mass creating stubs. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 21:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Rfb participation thanks

Hello, Matthew (did I get it right this time ;) ).

I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect their decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. I also wanted to thank you for your detailed and provocative questions that helped people better understand both the issues and my opinions on them. If you have any further suggestions or comments as to how you think I could help the project, please let me know. Once again, thank you for your support, and good luck with the BAG! -- Avi (talk) 18:17, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Well thanks anyways (Romliker (talk) 21:16, 12 May 2008 (UTC))

Could you please comment on how to program an archival bot for Wikipedia:Editor review that is both feasible and advisable? My inclination is to keep the current system, i.e. alphabetical order, with the date of the first edit to the page noted. I am willing to sacrifice either of these points if it makes the bot operator's job easier. In other words, we could forget about alphabetical order and archive by month, or we could simply not bother to note the date of each individual request. I am posting this message to several users active at Editor Review to solicit opinions. Shalom (HelloPeace) 03:53, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

That template

It's a template intended for non-admins who are vandal fighters and would like to post a notice to vandals after a level 4 warning. All the non-admins can do is report, and sometimes admins who check out the vandal report fail to close when they misunderstand the history. An extra warning notice would help them to see at a glance how much vandalism has been going on. Those errors should not happen, but during a heavy vandal fighting period, I saw far too many errors like that happen.

I'd have to look back through my edit history to find all of the discussions that went on over that template. A very slight majority favored it (including a clear majority of non-admins who participated in the discussions), but those who opposed it were pretty vehement in their opposition, citing past discussions over proposed templates which I personally don't think were the same thing. So it remains in my userspace. Doczilla STOMP! 08:06, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

GeoBot

There is now a new proposal for a Bot to be programmed but using Maplandia this time rather than falling rain. It uses google maps which are a reliable source and the site claims to be the most comprehenive and up to date location gazetteer on the web and I acknowledge that they are too. Given the extreme simplicity of the article creating procedure I am certain the process could be speedied up ten times faster and bot the content of whole countries onto wikipedia. What my goal to be eventually is to have a full world gazetteer evenly across the planet (2 million articles) but to have half decent encyclopedia articles on all of them. This for me is a MUST to lay as a foundation towards achieving this ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000?

Yes if you visit Maplandia gazetteer you'll see how it is comprehensively organized and given the way places are organized on there by region and district getting abot to gneerate articles reading this organization is very achievable I think. The problem is there seems to be a distinct lack of advanced computer programmers who can do such a thing on here. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:42, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

MickMacNee

Hi Matt. I saw this and think you went well overboard here. Quite apart from the whole don't-template-the-regulars thing, the wisest way to solve a situation involving a personal attack is not by threats but by reasoned discussion. An indefinite block is a massive over-reaction in the first -- or even second -- instance. The text was plainly not intended to be a personal attack and intentions are very important. While I totally agree that the post was out of order, I strongly feel the reaction was disproportionate. Sam Korn (smoddy) 08:55, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I wasn't aware of this precise history. In light of it, I would probably have just removed the comment and posted a comment on his talk page mentioning this and warning to ensure that it doesn't happen again. I am concerned about how often blocking (or a threat of blocking) is the first resort when there is a problem like this. Sam Korn (smoddy) 12:00, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I am quite sure an apology isn't necessary! Sam Korn (smoddy) 08:10, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

{{checkuserblock}} on Betacommand

MBisanz, unless I'm missing something, your block on Betacommand is not a "checkuser block" in the sense of that template. It is a normal block made (as far as I know) on your own authority as a normal admin, and has no more and no less authority than any other. It is based on a checkuser result (which I don't dispute). But that's a different thing. Authoritative checkuser blocks are those that are made by a checkuser on the basis of confidential CU information whose import is not apparent to normal admins. This doesn't seem to be the case here. Please remove that template, as it implies a level of permanence and authority to your block which it doesn't merit. Fut.Perf. 08:18, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I assert no permanence or additional authority beyond my normal administrator discretion. However, a Checkuser did provide additional data beyond what would normally be indicated and per that information I have used the template. Please contact a checkuser for more details. MBisanz talk 08:32, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Huh ??

Did something happen that dis-includes me from being a part of this mediation process ? I could not help but notice that there was no space allowed for me to present my point of view as there was for the others. I would like to continue to be included as a matter of courtesy even though I stated that I I am very likely to go along with the consensus of the others. I did not notice that I had lost my space to participate in the pre discusion until after I made that statement before I noticed that I was not included. So please re-include me if you will and I will try to keep up. If I fail to do so please feel free to bypass me on an issue to issue basis. I would just like to feel included as much as possible unless it is highly impracticable . :Albion moonlight (talk) 08:58, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I went over to the aforementioned section to try and determine if I had missed the boat by not including myself. I stopped when I realized that I know nothing about the color coding, so I am still concluding that I was not included as opposed to the possible scenario that I did not include myself.

User:Future Perfect at Sunrise's selective steps toward the elimination of sockpuppetry

Hello. Re User:Future Perfect at Sunrise's pleas to ublock User:Betacommand, I thought you might be interested in checking my and User:Elampon's talk-pages and FPaS' sockpuppetry accusations. I would still be indefinetly blocked just because I uttered a question. Regards. ktr (talk) 10:53, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I have no idea what is going on here and don't care to become involved. MBisanz talk 16:07, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, but if I'm not mistaken, you were about to indefinitely block User:Betacommand, when User:Future Perfect at Sunrise intervened and demanded that he (BC) be unblocked. My point was that FPaS should be the last person (or one of the last) on WP to demand the unblocking of a confirmed sockpuppet (according to evidence) as he has some rather negative history here; at least, concerning sockpuppets or users he vaguely suspects of being "sockpuppets" (with no evidence whatsoever) of some unknown, invisible and unidentifiable sockpuppeteer (I'm speaking from personal experience).
I was just trying to be of assistance, thanks for taking the time to read that. Regards. ktr (talk) 17:03, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
I got that to be the jist of your message, and since I was already involved in a discussion with Fut Perf over one of my admin actions, it would be inappropriate for me to investigate him for alleged actions he may have taken. MBisanz talk 20:16, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your support at my recent Request for adminship. I hope you find I live up to your expectations. Best, Risker (talk) 15:46, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

You know, it's a minimum requirement before undertaking administrative action that you have some actual idea of what's going. If you're unable or unwilling to do so, you ought not to be giving out advice and/or blocks, nor blindly supporting other admins' actions.

I am reverting a long-running unilateral edit-warrior's tendentious edits, in the aftermath of mediation case worked out without the slightest assistance from said warrior -- and your only worry is about which 'i' is dotted and which 't' is crossed? That's there's some sort of equivalence here between one edit-warrior and 16 opposers?

There WAS no 'edit war' -- there was an upholding of a literal consensus. There was no call for blocks and no call for uninformed warnings. The slightest skim of the evidence would have told you otherwise -- yet, you couldn't be bothered. This is NOT the standard one expects from an administrator. --221.114.141.220 (talk) 17:13, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

I declined an unblock request for your edit warring. The block was made by another administrator who was also uninvolved in the article. A third administrator also declined the unblock request. No administrator unblocked. Therefore it was an appropriate action. MBisanz talk 19:59, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks for your participation in my recent request for adminship. I am impressed by the amount of thought that goes into people's contribution to the RfA process, and humbled that so many have chosen to trust me with this new responsibility. I step into this new role cautiously, but will do my very best to live up to your kind words and expectations, and to further the project of the encyclopedia. Again, thank you. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 05:37, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

NYC Meetup: June 1, 2008

New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday June 1st, Columbia University area
Last: 3/16/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, elect a board of directors, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).

We'll also review our recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wiki Week bonanza, being planned with Columbia University students for September or October.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

Also, check out our regional US Wikimedia chapters blog Wiki Northeast (and we're open to guest posts).

My recent RfA

Thank you for supporting my RfA, which unfortunately didn't succeed. The majority of the opposes stated that I needed more experience in the main namespace and Wikipedia namespace and talk space, so that is what I will do. I have made a list and I hope I will be able to get through it. I will go for another RfA in about three month's time and I hope you will be able to support me then as well. If you have any other comments for me or wish to be notified when I go for another RfA, please leave them on my talk page. If you wish to nominate me for my next RfA, please wait until it has been about three months. I will not be checking back to this page so if you would like to comment or reply please use my talk page. Thanks again for participating in my RfA! ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 06:28, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Then there's also the fact that both liked to welcome people, and this and that, which explains why Save The Humans is interested. Enigma message 20:12, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
