A suggestion
[edit]According to Wikipedia:User page, I don't think you're supposed to have drafts of articles on your user page itself. What you could do is create a subpage, like User:K. Kellogg-Smith/Tip wage credit or something. Then when it's ready, you could use the "move" function at the top of the page to change the name of the subpage to Tip wage credit which would appear in the main article space. User sub-page.
[edit]Thanks for the heads up. I didn't notice the note about not using User: page until I was several weeks into drafting the article. I'll look into moving it to a sub-page as you suggested. The draft is taking a while to finalize. It's like writing web pages without WYSIWYG, going back and forth from source code to browser view to check on formatting and acceptable/not acceptable elements and so forth. Your external link note has helped me move things along nicely, though. I hope I can wrap the project up in a couple of weeks and get it posted. Thanks again for your helpful suggestions.

[edit]About Dave Guard--thanks for the reply. Aside from liking the original KT, I'm grateful to Dave Guard for recording Gabby--the album was clearly a labor of love and provides a good look into Gabby's personal take on the music. I'm about 80% finished with a book on the history of slack key, so I'm always looking for bits of information about the players, the songs, and the scene. If it's something you are/were interested or involved in, I'd love to hear about it. (That period just before the Cultural Renaissance got rolling has been tough to research, at least for a Minnesotan with a restricted travel budget.) Also your reply--The book is not-quite-stalled at 80K out of a projected 95K words. One big interview and a handful of follow-ups and it will be finished after more than six years of not-concentrated-enough work. I'm sure that even without the technical challenges, learning slack key was tough for a non-Hawaiian back then--even into the late 60s, much of the old secrecy still was in effect, so people without a family connection were not likely to find a mentor. I know three haole guys who managed, and two of them (Ken and Phil Emerson) did so thanks to the generosity of Raymond Kāne. By the 1970s, Raymond and Keola and Auntie Alice and Peter Medeiros were teaching all comers, but I suspect that getting the slack key groove has always been a big challenge. (After more than a decade of trying, I still play with a Minnesota accent.) In any case, I'd like to hear more about life in Hawai`i (musical and cultural) during your time there. If you can put up with e-mail correspondence, my e-address is on the website--I value every impression and recollection, and they all make the mosaic more detailed and accurate. AfD close of Duquesne Spy Ring
[edit]I have looked over the discussions on the talk pages, and I stand fast to my decision.
To begin- the article is legally not plagiarism at all. It is released under the public domain (to be specific, the Freedom of Information Act), which means the article is free content. Since no one person "claims" the information (thus "public domain"), no plagiarism is present. We are on safe ground as long the sources are attributed, which has already been accomplished.
I speedy kept the AfD because your basis of argument is invalid (no plagiarism is involved, but you say plagiarism is involved) Also, in the dicussions on the talk page, it seems that most users oppose your viewpoint on this matter.
In response to not including copies of primary sources, I believe you should also read the ignore all rules policy. The creator of the article transcluded the document to Wikipedia very well, thus my decision to "speedy keep" the article.
I respect your personal opinion on ethics, but there is nothing legally wrong in this matter. Sr13 19:38, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

- Sounds like a good plan. You'll note that I put an {{underconstruction}} tag on your article. This largely serves the same purpose as the box you put at the top, but it is standardized and automatically places the article in an under-construction category. It's also something that editors on recent-changes or new-page patrol (such as myself) will instantly recognize and leave alone, unless it's obvious vandalism. Let me know if I can be of help. Tip wage credit and edit summaries
[edit]Hi there! I have two general comments to make. First, remember to not put four tildes (~~~~) in edit summaries, and second, you should have moved your userpage to mainspace. I suggest right now that you try to get the current page deleted, so you can move your userpage there because copy-paste moves are discouraged because it say you only have six edits to page, but you've been working on it much, much more! - I'd rather keep the 250 edits you made to your userpage than to the article. What is possible is deleting the article, saving the current text in a sandbox, revert to the article version of your subpage, move it, and the recopy the current text in there. - Okay, I see your point now. My idea was to get rid of my development edit history so it wouldn't clutter up the namespace article's history. Your idea is to keep all edits with the namespace article, development edits included. A couple of weeks ago I did an AfD on a plagiarized article and bungled the process, so I'll keep my fingers out of the pie unless and until you let me know if there's anything I have to do in the move process. Thanks again. (My apologies for the delay; I was doing some work with the Hawaiian Wikipedia and got hung up in that for a while.)

- I saw your comments on the tip wage credit talk page. The legislative part is a separate article, so it won't be affected. Secondly, I've posted the current article here, so no links would be lost. Thirdly, you'd rather lose 8 edits (which modifications would be accounted for) that 250+ that would remain to your userpage; since I have kept a version of this article, what would happen, if deleted, I'd move your userpage there, replace that version with the last version before the deletion. After, I'd restore what you have on your userpage before I started reverting. What would happen in the end is that your page history (for your userpage) will be moved to mainspace. Nothing more. - I appreciate the work you're doing, and putting up with my ignorance about page moves and merging edit histories. Over the years I've irretrievably lost large blocks of text by not knowing or thinking about what I was doing. It's a painful experience, and I didn't want to repeat it here. And I forgot to mention in the discussion that I had also read the "Help:Moving a page article in the MediaWiki Handbook, particularly the section titled "Fixing cut and paste moves", but I disregarded the procedure given there because (a) I'm not really familiar enough yet with Wikipedia and its procedures, and (b) the warning in the paragraph said "Do not do this if you're not sure what you're doing.", and (c) as I said, I really wasn't concerned about transferring/merging my development edits. So have another go at it, and thanks for all your help. My best regards to you.

Re:Sysop Status

The term "Sysop" or "System Operator" is just another word for the term "Administrator". Without their existence, Wikipedia would be full of anarchy because numerous immature pranksters, if given the opportunity, would use such freedom to abuse the system through mass Spamming, Vandalism, Defacement, abusive language, inserting false information, creating phony articles....and the list goes on.
Hence Wikipedia Administrators have the priviledge, in accordance with Wikipedia guidelines, to Protect articles, Delete articles, prevent spam, revert edits by vandals etc and also to block users if they go too far. They can also translate the interface into the native language (through the help of a native speaker of course). For more information regarding sysops/administrators, see Wikipedia:Administrators. If you wish to apply for Temporary Sysop priviledges, then go here.

- Thanks for the prompt reply, Jose. The Tok Pisin (tpi) Wikipedia needs a lot of work, and I've been trying to find out who the current Administrator(s) are for that Wikipedia. It looks to me like nothing significant has been done to TPI for over a year now. There are vandalized pages that need to be deleted (e.g. w/w/w/php, etc.), there are templates for the language()s box need to be added, and translations have to be made for entries on the left frame of the main page. The main page is misnamed, doesn't follow the rule on initial caps, and needs to be renamed, etc. Per your info, I'll make a request for "temporary administrator" privileges and see if I can't help get the project back on track. I've reviewed the work done with the Hawaiian Wikipedia (having grown up in Hawaii, and gone to middle school, high school and university there), and although HAW is really pretty much of a skeleton right now, it will serve nicely as a model for an updated/upgraded TPI Wikipedia. - I doubt that User:Kaffelice will actually reply to you within the next few weeks or months. Instead of waiting for a very long time for his reply, I personally think that you can apply for temporary sysop permission on MetaWiki right now. Just use this template:

Tok Pisin
[edit]Thanks for the reply, Ken. Your idea of "/English" looks brilliant! You may want to save typing by using "/eng" instead (I'd avoid "/en" because some of the tricky templates I've seen use things like that for special purposes.) You can do that without being a sysop, but I can see the value of some of the sysop-only tasks you mention.
Go and talk to Kandar, still apparently the chief contributor to the Sundanese WP. Much of it (including articles) was blatantly English for a while, and was just gradually translated. I don't know if that's still happening.
Check the talk pages of all recent contributors to Tok Pisin - may give you some clues about the mood and atmosphere.

tip wage credit
[edit]No worries about the article, I just removed he tag since it hadn't been edited in a while. Whenever you get around to it, you get around to it, that tag's mainly meant for articles that will have a lot of edits in the upcoming day or two. Anyway, if you have parts of the artice written on your talk page, basically just move it to the mainspace whenever you finish it, there's no rush (especially if it ends up being a really good article). Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!
This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.
Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

December 10 is Ada Lovelace's birthday! Not only was she the world's first computer programmer, but also the world's first female open source developer! Come celebrate with Wikimedia District of Columbia at Busboys & Poets for an informal get together!
The Washington, DC event will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012 at Busboys & Poets on 5th St NW & K St NW near Mt Vernon Square. The area is easily accessible by the Red Line Chinatown stop and the Yellow Line and Green Line Mt Vernon Square stop, as well as by WMATA buses.

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition
[edit]Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.
The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.

On Tuesday, 28 May there will be a community Wikipedia meeting at the United States National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland - with a second on Thursday, 30 May for those who can't make it on Tuesday. Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather.
Wikimedia DC is looking forward to a spring full of cool and exciting activities. In March, we have coming up:
- Evening WikiSalon on Wednesday, March 12 from 7 PM – 9 PM. Meet up with Wikipedians for coffee at the Cove co-working space in Dupont Circle! If you cannot make it in the evening, join us at our...
- March Meetup on Sunday, March 23 from 3 PM – 6 PM. Our monthly weekend meetup, same place as last month. Meet really cool and interesting people!
- Women in the Arts 2014 meetup and edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 30 from 10 AM – 5 PM. Our second annual Women in the Arts edit-a-thon, held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Free lunch will be served!

An exciting month of wiki events!

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

- Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July
[edit]I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.
What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon!

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon
[edit]The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.
If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Museum hacks and museum edits

Upcoming events:
- February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
- February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
- February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".
I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.
First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).
Now, I am very pleased to announce:
- Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
- Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
- Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
- Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.
There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

February events and meetups in DC
[edit]Greetings from Wikimedia DC!
February is shaping up to be a record-breaking month for us, with nine scheduled edit-a-thons and several other events:
- On Friday, February 12, NPR will host a Black History Month First Edit event.
- On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, we're working with the Wiki Education Foundation to hold a series of four edit-a-thons at the AAAS 2016 Annual Meeting.
- On Tuesday, February 16, we're holding the Smithsonian American Art Museum and American University WikiWorkshop with Professor Andrew Lih's class.
- On Saturday, February 20, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will host the African American Artists Edit-a-Thon.
- On Friday, February 26, Howard University will host its second annual Black History Month Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, February 27, we have three different events. In the morning, we're holding an Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. In the afternoon, we'll host our second February WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle, followed by our monthly dinner meetup at Vapiano.
We hope to see you at one—or all—of these events!

March events and meetups in DC

Looking for something to do in DC in March? We have a series of great events planned for the month:
- On Wednesday, March 9, we'll host our first March WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle.
- On Friday, March 11, the National Archives will host the Women in the Civil War Edit-a-Thon.
- On Saturday, March 19, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian will host the Color History with the Smithsonian! event, and we'll hold our second Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia
[edit]Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest!
