Dates
[edit]- I'm voting for Saturday, June 18. That seems to work best for me... SchuminWeb (Talk) 16:01, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

- June 19 but June 26 works for me as well. Racepacket (talk) 20:41, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- We seem to do well with Saturday dinner. I'm going to start a poll. Also need to put a request in to have a bot sprinkle notifications of DC10 around. At that point we may find more conflicts and have to change things around.--rocketrye12 talk/contribs 22:11, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Just F.Y.I.: User:Shaul avrom indicated here that "in the summer" he would prefer to meet on a Sunday.<br. />--NBahn (talk) 08:00, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- My vote is for June 19, because I'm flying out of the country on the 21st for awhile (and thus inevitably would not be able to make it to any other date the meet-up would be held on). --Cyde Weys 21:11, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- Any of those work for me. ⇒SWATJester Son of the Defender 22:59, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Saturday, June 19Sunday, June 20 would be good, coinciding with DC Digital Capital Week -- I'm involved with it and can see about getting the meetup on the DCWEEK calendar. I'm not sure about 5:30 pm, though... that would depend on if we do anything involving the Smithsonian, which in case sometime in the afternoon might be better. --Aude (talk) 00:13, 8 May 2010 (UTC)- I couldn't do 19, but 20 (Sunday) would work fine for me.--Pharos (talk) 15:46, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
- Updated mine. Saturday, June 19 won't work for me. I am involved with DCWeek projects, and we are doing final presentation of our projects on Saturday, ~4-7pm. Sunday would work for me, and better to draw in new people from DCWeek to the meetup. --Aude (talk) 11:17, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
- I couldn't do 19, but 20 (Sunday) would work fine for me.--Pharos (talk) 15:46, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
- Up for either date. --doorautomatica (talk) 04:16, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
Saturday June 26 @ 5:30pm

- I'm really open for either date, but I'm more likely to be clear later on in the month. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 15:36, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

- I am sorry, but the above section is becoming unwieldy; whomever decides to seize the moment and tell a restaurant (as of this writing, it would evidently be
CaliforniaTortilla Coast) that X number of people are coming will probably find not a majority, but, rather, a plurality. Maybe a majority is impossible to get, but I'm going to at least attempt to make it as straightforward as possible. For each date listed, please indicate if it's a definite YES, or a definite NO (if it's maybe, then please do not make an entry for that date). If your preferred time is OTHER than 5:30 P.M., then please indicate your preferred time. If someone does indicate a time other than 5:30 P.M., then please, under the said entry, indent and indicate YES or NO.—NBahn- "as of this writing, it would evidently be California Tortilla" -- you mean Tortilla Coast, don't you? Smithsonian Institute Involvement
[edit]User:Pharos from the WikiMedia New York has put me in contact with some people at the Smithsonian Institute who expressed interest in participating with the DC crowd. I am not sure to what extent they can support, just sent out an e-mail asking them if they would like to participate somehow in this event. Sadads (talk) 16:08, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting, do you know in what context? SI affiliated people joining us for dinner or maybe hosting a gala at the Air and Space museum for us?? :-) --rocketrye12 talk/contribs 22:02, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- We discussed this at meta:Museums and the Web 2010. The idea is that we could actually have a tour as well as a sit-down meetup on-site at one of the SI museums. I don't know if that counts as a "gala", but it is a very generous and friendly offer on their part :)--Pharos (talk) 22:46, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- I was a part of a group which hosted an invitation-only gala at the Air and Space Museum in conjunction with the DC MacWorld Expo. The Smithsonian generally expects a very generous donation in conjuction with allowing the use of that space. Racepacket (talk) 17:59, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- I think the intention, or at least what I would like to see happen, is that we be something akin to the tour we got at the LOC somewhere, and then some type of meeting with some of their people. But I still haven't gotten a response. Pharos may want to clarify a little bit more of the nature of their discussion.Sadads (talk) 18:46, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, Sadads is right. The model is very much something like the LOC tour along with a meeting with some of their people. No generous donation required, other than our contributing our thoughts and ideas on greater Smithsonian Institution collaboration with the Wikimedia projects :)--Pharos (talk) 20:56, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- I was being sarcastic about the gala, but that's interesting Racepacket. Must've been pretty cool.--rocketrye12 talk/contribs 22:37, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- My former employer, one of the museum's sustaining donors, would reserve the entire Air and Space Museum (out in Northern Virginia) for their annual holiday party. Talk about a gala! It was loads of fun, and well worth the trip from Maryland to the museum. Scarletsmith (talk) 02:09, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Let me know if this happens. I have some contacts with the SAAM from some previous work we did alongside Wikipedia loves Art last year. I would not want to duplicate efforts or step on toes of existing discussions -- the WMF has some ongoing discussions with the SI as a whole that we would do best to steer clear of. ⇒SWATJester Son of the Defender 23:00, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
- I believe we are all talking the same, regarding SAAM... and I know some of the same people there too. The meetup would be a chance to further discuss ideas and what might be possible. Pharos - since you were at the Museums workshop, it might be best for you (or Sadads?) to take the lead on meetup coordination with the Smithsonian. --Aude (talk) 00:01, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- a tour of SAAM would be all to the good, near metro and chinatown, not that far away from convention center.Pohick2 (talk) 02:29, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't got a response from the e-mail I sent. If Pharos also wants to try to contact them, that would be great. He does know them better. We can keep CCing eachother on the e-mails and I will help once things actually get moving?Sadads (talk) 11:15, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

We've now confirmed that there will be a tour, but we're still firming up the particular museum (probably will be Air and Space), and the time of the tour.--Pharos (talk) 22:40, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
- It sounds like the tour of the Air and Space museum will likely be around 2:30, and several curators have expressed interest in future cooperation with us! More information to come soon!!!!Sadads (talk) 10:55, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
- Additionally, there will be a meeting at the American Indian Museum to discuss future cooperation with the Smithsonian. Sadads (talk) 11:14, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- So who's leading the tour this time? Some of those curators? Anyone know if it'll be a walk around the museum w/interesting info about various things, or are they showing us some special places outside the usual public displays?
- --Qwerty0 (talk) 18:49, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thats a good question, I am planning on arriving a little early myself so I can wander about and get some ideas of whats in the place so I can talk intelligently about whats there. I havent been there in a while myself and want to be able to talk like I know whats there. May I also suggest that we dress semi casual. My feeling is that cutoff jeans and a sleaveless t-shirt are probably not a good way to impress them with our professionalism! I was planning on wearing slacks and a polo shirt myself unless someone else has a better suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 18:57, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Discussion of ideas for SI meeting
[edit]I am glad and excited to see that cooperation with SI might by in our future and I think with the relatively short time left between this meetup we should discuss what types of things we want to ask them and what types of things they are likely to ask us. I have a lot of ideas and suggestions but in an effort to keep this short I am going to limit my thoughts a bit. For example how WP and SI can benefit each other. We both have our strengths and our weaknesses and I realize that I am coming into the game rather late but in the off chance that it hasn't come up yet I wanted to throw it out there. Also, for those who are not aware there is already a partnership betweeen WP and the British Museum and they have already done some good wotk and had some successes from their partnership. That can be seen here; Wikipedia:GLAM/BM. They have already begun seeing some pains from that partnership and I think we should keep an eye on what they are doing since it will likely have value to what we are doing as well. I think at a minimum we should ask what the SI has in mind as far as cooperation and determine what their expectations and limitations are and I think we should be prepared to ask/answer the same types of questions about WP. Of course this is a huge oversimplification but I wanted to get the conversation started. Just my 2 cents. --Kumioko (talk) 13:57, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- I agree we should pay attention to everything going on with the British Museum. I also think User:Pharos has a lot of experience with this type of stuff with his work up in New York. They have some pretty successful partnerships with several museums in the City and with the City Library system. I have some thoughs that I will add later.Sadads (talk) 14:11, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- I think a couple of the folks that are coming also had some involvement in the Library of Congress (LOC) meetup and I think we should listen to thier experiences with that as well. --Kumioko (talk) 14:23, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- We didn't actually do anything with the LOC staff last time, unfortunately. We have had connection with the SI before, but that fell through at one point. Pharos and I kindof pushed for some sort of effort last meetup to make our association with organizations a little more formal and to organize a little more as a Wikmedia org, but not much came of it. I think this SI stuff will be the best way to push for us to do more than just meetups and if we get a good solid core to work on that, maybe we can expand to more in the DC area. Sadads (talk) 14:32, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- I created a page at Wikipedia:GLAM/SI as a good central place for discussion of ideas that we can offer. Sadads (talk) 14:05, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Dining Venue?
[edit]Since it is not clear to me (at this point in time, anyway) that the Smithsonian will, ipso facto, be our dining venue, I am taking the liberty of creating this section where people can share ideas. At the risk of sounding like a nervous nelly, June 12/13th is (at least for planning purposes, anyway) quickly approaching (and June 19/20th isn't far away, either).
Venue Suggestions & Comments
[edit]- Uno's at Union Station I offer this as a back up because it is a known quantity.
- Pros
- Handicapper Accessible (and just plain generally accessible)
- Costs are Known and Acceptable
- Handicapper Accessible (and just plain generally accessible)
- Cons
- Some people — I will not name names ;-) — are allergic to pizza. <br. />—NBahn (talk) 03:45, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- Are you referring to a comment I made a few meetups ago? I'm not allergic to pizza, but I just felt that pizza every time for several consecutive meetups was overdoing it. -- BRG (talk) 14:32, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

- Tortilla Coast (review on the Washington Post's Going Out Guide)
- Hey DC Wikipedians! I've been lurking for a while and just finally made an account. I've been in the city for about five years now, so I'm happy to lend a hand, planning-wise.
- Pros
- Walking distance from the Capitol, Union Station, Capitol South Metro, and the Mall, generally speaking.
- Though it's a popular hangout post-work on weekdays, it's usually fairly open on weekends, so it should accommodate a group.
- Cheap! (Well, for DC food. Cheap enough for this grad student.)
- Delicious Tex-Mex.
- Has delicious alcoholic beverages but is not a bar, so everyone can come along.
- No known accessibility issues.
- Cons
- It would be a new experience! And thus, scary, I know. Also, I've never tried to take a few dozen people to Tortilla Coast, but there's definitely room.
- "It would be a new experience" That's a con? To me that's a pro! -- BRG (talk) 14:32, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- Haha, well, I think it's a pro, but many of my friends (on and offline) are cool with status quo. Maybe I should make a new category for gray-area elements. --doorautomatica (talk) 23:22, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- "It would be a new experience" That's a con? To me that's a pro! -- BRG (talk) 14:32, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
- Even on the weekends, Tortilla Coast is still known for Hill interns/staffers hanging out during the summer. Depending on your interest in seeing barely-legal Hillterns, that might actually be in the pro column.

- Tortilla Coast sounds like it might be fun. Here's their Web site, and their price range. It looks like the prices are comparable to Uno's. It's literally like half a block from where the Capitol South escalators let you out, and it's caddy-corner from where the elevator lets you out. SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:40, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
- Question is, do we need a deposit for the space etc? or do we just warning them they we will take over the restraunt enmass again?Sadads (talk) 01:44, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
- I will give them a call tomorrow (Sunday) and ask. About how many people are we expecting? --doorautomatica (talk) 03:38, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
- we had something like 45-50 people last time. That would probably be what we would need. We can be more sure (within 5-10) about a week / week and a half out.Sadads (talk) 17:57, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Comment
[edit]- Apparently, per an E-mail from Nbahn, Tortilla Coast wants a 50% deposit before making the reservation. Though I'd prefer we not go to somewhere we've been so many times before, I suspect we're stuck with Uno's -- unless someone wants to put up that deposit, which Nbahn estimates at about $300+. -- BRG (talk) 15:32, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
- The backup plan ("B", as it were) is what we ended up doing at UNO's last time -- just show up en masse; the major problem and downside with this approach is that Tortilla Coast just isn't as big as UNO's is, and so won't be able to accomodate us in their public area "up front" as easily as UNO's can in its back area (one simply doesn't begin to appreciate big restaurants until one is trying to make reservations for a 30+ group). So, either by hook or by crook, we'll be using Tortilla Coast as per the voting.<br. />—NBahn (talk) 16:06, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
- I am definitely in favor of Plan "B". $25 is a lot for dinner, and it brings back memories of the exorbitant cost of Skewers, and so if we can order off the regular menu and better control our own bills, the better. SchuminWeb (Talk) 23:27, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
A final decision has been made
[edit]- Just got off the phone with Nbahn who will be moving his vote from Tortilla Coast to UNOs. When you combine this with the fact that Tortilla coast is requiring a significant down payment that no one (understandably) wants to commit to --- the final call is going to be Saturday June 26 @ 5:30 P.M., Pizzeria Unos at Union Station. He will be making a reservation tonight, chose to be bold on this one, and has my second. --rocketrye12 talk/contribs 20:30, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
- I was at Tortilla Coast, and I can unequivocally state that when it comes to "regular" reservations (i.e., without a security deposit and no separate room), UNOs wins hands-down. They have a bigger place that they can seat us in than Tortilla Coast can and UNO's space is out of the way while Tortilla Coast's out front and in the middle of all of the action; it's not as conducive to group discussion as UNO's is (like I said before, trying to find a working space for a group of 20-30 people — and without PUTTING DOWN A DEPOSIT — is not exactly easy).
- Spoke with a manager (naturally, I forgot to get his name) and he confirmed Sat. 26th @ 5:30PM.<br. />—NBahn (talk) 00:38, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- Works for me. Uno's it is, it seems. See you there. SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:28, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- To keep the price reasonable and get simulateous food service, we are going with UNO's salad, pizza and dessert buffet for $15.50 on a central check. If at all possible, please RSVP on the project page by June 19 so that we can give UNO's an accurate count and meet their minimum. (They plan for a certain number of last minute attendees who did not RSVP, but when we given them a count on June 19th, they will expect us to pay for at least that number of plates.) - TBD STILL trying to line up someone to provide a line of credit.--NBahn 7:27 P.M. Eastern 28th May 2010
- OK, here's the deal:
- Plan "A":
- Someone provides a debit/credit card for $300+ so that we can use a back room; under this scenario everyone will have access to:
- the soda pop and tea bar
- Chips and salsa
- Two different fajita bars (chicken and beef, if I recall correctly)
- I calculate that the bill for each individual is $25 — please email me if you want to see the actual contract.
- Plan "B":
- What we did at UNO's—namely, every table pays its own tab.<br. />—NBahn (talk) 16:26, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
- Please, let's get the arrangements pin downed firmly in advance. If a deposit is needed, please post that fact here rather than having the venue "cancel" on us.
- I'm in the process of making arrangements for Tortilla Coast on the 26th. Unfortunately, they're going to require a deposit; therefore, I'm calling out for someone with a debit/credit card to please email me with your contact info. so that we may discuss specifics.<br. />—NBahn (talk) 06:03, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
- This seems not to be working out. Nbahn tells me no one has come forward with a card, and it looks like we'll have to fall back to plan B.--rocketrye12 talk/contribs 20:34, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
- I can probably help. E-mail me on Monday if necessary. Newyorkbrad (talk) 20:49, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- Please remember that UNO's cancelled our reservation and buffet dinner because we could not put down a credit card last time. I can also help in that regard. Racepacket (talk) 07:24, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia DC Meetup group
[edit]There used to be one in formation with 6 people and I procrastinated about "starting" it and just announcing meetings there (to the seven interested members and anyone who drops by). Now I can't find it at all. So maybe they deleted it. If others think it is a good idea to actually start one, again just for purpose of announcing these meetings, perhaps they should go for it? Thoughts? CarolMooreDC (talk) 17:09, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- I just got a notification and encouragement to start that meetup, went through the steps and low and behold, they now want money to start a group. The heck with that! Will just send emails to relevant people about this page. CarolMooreDC (talk) 17:10, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- That's a real bummer. But we seem to have done just fine without a formal group organized. -- BRG (talk) 23:43, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
- My goal was just to alert those who might not have found this page. CarolMooreDC (talk) 14:48, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Air and Space Museum
[edit]Whereabouts at the Air and Space Museum are we meeting? Forgive me, but I've not been there since around 1997, and so I'm not quite sure what's where over there anymore. SchuminWeb (Talk) 23:35, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
- Will work on specifics probably will know early next week. Sadads (talk) 00:46, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
