Climate content check in Everglades
Howdy. I'm looking for specific help in looking over the content of the Climate section in the Everglades article. I see your name and HurricanHink's at FA reviewing and nominating climate articles... I'm not really handy with climatology issues, but I read what I could and tried my best to understand it. I'm concerned with accuracy and comprehensiveness mostly, and that what I've written is clear. Thanks for what you can do. --Moni3 (talk) 16:47, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks
Thank you. FYI, there is a discussion about the lead sentence. Some people think the old one (without the bold title, that you objected to) is better. IMO the old one was better but I don't really have a dog in the fight. Feel free to chime in if you wish Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. Roads#FA and USRD Dave (talk) 18:12, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

A suggestion for list of Maryland hurricanes
In your sandbox number 2, you are making a list of Maryland hurricanes. Might I suggest including the District of Columbia? In terms of area, DC is tiny compared to Maryland, and I find it hard to imagine a hurricane affecting DC and not Maryland. Having a list of Washington DC hurricanes would basically be a subset of the Maryland list. Basically, I am suggesting this because I don't see it necessary to split Maryland and DC. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 02:32, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- You could. An alternative would be seeing if a cyclone did anything notable there (eg. washing out a bridge) and then simply expanding its bulleted description. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 23:54, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'd choose the one that includes both parts (DC and MD). If there is a short collective term for Maryland and DC together, that could be used. But I don't really have any problem with just Maryland. Need any assistance? Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 01:06, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

- Please don't feel hard done by or the like because your RfA did not succeed. Just because you felt forced to withdraw should not be seen as a rejection. Instead, see it as a challenge to prove your opposers wrong. So, don't leave Wikipedia or anything or even get ideas about leaving. You do an ideal thing in that when you edit an article, you make it better than it was before. You are an excellent example of what everyone should strive to do. Why are you putting it uppercase at Template:Resolved comments?
If you do this, then people who use the parameter in lowercase will not be able to use it. That is why most templates use lowercase for parameters. Gary King (talk) 21:47, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

AWB
Have you used AWB before? I'm going to make a major change to the template and it'd be helpful if you could change the pages that are currently using the template by using the tool. Gary King (talk) 21:39, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm going to break {{rc}} and build it back up from scratch, which will definitely break pages using it. Go through [1] and you can fix them by replacing {{resolved comments}} with {{rcold}}. Gary King (talk) 21:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- I strongly don't recommend that. If the template is used on less than 500 pages, I would consider it not under heavy usage. We can leave it on archived pages, but probably fix it on active pages. Gary King (talk) 21:50, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
- I guess you just want the username but no formatting? Signing would be easiest for people to use since for those with long usernames, it can be quite the pain to type out. Gary King (talk) 21:53, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Juliancolton. I see that a newly registered user is vandalising your userpage. Have you ever thought about requesting your page to be protected? If you were to have an admin protect your userpage, I would suggest semi-protecting, because then, only accounts older than four days can edit it. If you request PP, then it will possibly prevent him from vandalising your userpage. Thanks! SchfiftyThree 22:27, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I asked that it not be used because it includes no sig and can be used disruptively; it is being used in FACs, creating extra work.

- Julian, I explained in several places that this redundant template would be disruptive at FAC because it doesn't include a signature or timestamp, and I asked that MFC's script not be used; it is being used. I have no recourse but to TfD. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:17, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to have to do that, Julian, but comments that are capped without a sig just create too much potential for abuse and a problem. Thanks for understanding. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:32, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

USRD participants list
As discussed at WT:USRD, the participants list at WP:USRD is being split by state. Due to any of the following factors- your extended participation in WT:USRD discussions, your IRC participation, or your extended participation in Shields or Maps, I have guessed that you are a nationwide editor and have designated you as such in the USRD partiicpants table. This is part of the lengthy process. If this is in error, please let me know immediately. This is especially likely with this group as I have to guess whether you are a national or a state editor. Not much to look up. The Daily Weather Maps during the period in question show that Buffalo received 0.05" of rainfall during David's passage. Gracie
The things in brackets are for disambiguation. "Deserving the main article" as a rule is something that makes sense in the case of new Katrina. However, when a storm name is used once and only once and is not on the current lists so will not be used again. Therefore Hurricane Gracie uniquely defines one storm. Therefore disambiguation is not necessary. Common sense trumps WPTC anyday. Think: If the "main article" redirects to an alternative with (brackets) and there is no possible confusion, there is no need for the redirect. Storms aren't people "they" don't deserve a thing.--CycloneAlley (talk) 02:02, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thats called being stupid. Try to remember: this is Wikipedia not WikiProject Tropical cyclones. Wikipedia-wide rules trump WikiProjects, like an king beats a three. The not-deserving-main-article-thing applies for storms on CURRENT lists. As Gracie is not there, why does it need to be bracketed? Tell me! Try to think and apply some common sense, instead of quoting WPTC guidelines.--CycloneAlley (talk) 02:13, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
OK take back the first sentence. Then read what I said and think before you reply, instead of saying "WPTC says A, so A is all that is allowed".--CycloneAlley (talk) 02:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hurricane Gracie wasn't retired, what does that have to do with anything? A (year in brackets) is for disambiguation, not to say the storm is not "deserving" of the "main article". Tell me why non-retired storms need the year in the title? Oh if thats the case, how come Nargis, Gonu and Agni have their "main" articles? Those names are not and never will be retired either, so they should be at Cyclone Nargis (2008), Cyclone Gonu (2007), Cyclone Agni (2004) if this convention really was sensible.--CycloneAlley (talk) 02:32, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
How is this vandalism????
How does adding an approved placeholder image to a template constitute vandalism? the purpose of the image s to solicit the addition of properly licensed images to articles, which no one in there right mind couldf have objection to. _64.32.189.89 (talk) 03:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Julian,
I just deleted a bunch of pages per your request, but I wanted to drop a quick note and let you know that there were some unintended consequences. Apparently, a number of the pages you requested be deleted have been transcluded on other pages, which means that by nominating these pages for deletion you also inadvertently added those other pages to CAT:USD. It's not a big problem, of course--nothing got deleted that shouldn't have been, and the category will sort itself out--but I thought I'd let you know that in the future, you might want to either avoid transcluding personal subpages (particularly into articles) or simply slap a pair of <noinclude> </noinclude>
tags around the CSD notice to prevent it from being transcluded. Thanks! --jonny-mt 16:30, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.
1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...
2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.
3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.
Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:36, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your review and the offer to help, they are both much appreciated.
- Per your comment on the Cogan House Covered Bridge I wanted to mention that I find some of my obscure sources via the internet - although the two Lycoming County historical society journals are not online, their tables of contents are and I can search them fairly easily with Google (then go to libraries that have the issues). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:03, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- I have also had some luck hunting through newspaper archives on microfilm when I know an approximate date (and so range) to look in. One library I use has an index to the local newpaper articles online too, although they miss things sometimes too. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:51, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks!
Thanks again for your support and comments - Cogan House Covered Bridge made featured article today! Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:35, 28 May 2008 (UTC) |

NY 311 and other Putnam/Dutchess photos
Julian,
A while back you asked if I had any photos of NY 311. I didn't then, but I went out that way with my son last weekend and took a whole bunch (also see my additions to my suggested photos at Talk:New York State Route 22). Among them are the view looking north up the causeway over Lake Carmel from the junction, and a view down 52 heading into the junction showing the lake and causeway ... the last photo I really wanted for that article.
I also got one of downtown Patterson. It will be a while till I get them uploaded, but I've got them now. Daniel Case (talk) 18:12, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
They've answered our question
It looks like in the new GA review format, as many people as possible get to review the article, and the decision to pass it lies with the first reviewer. I'm imagining this will slow down the review process, but it does clarify things regarding multiple reviewers of an article. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:32, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

GA subpage
Because GA nominations are now on a subpage, there's no way to access it after the bot archives it. I was able to fix the temporary Failed GA template, but when the bot archives it there's no way to go to the subpage again. Can this be fixed? Track images
Just upload the new track over the same image. It keeps things organized. Thanks. -CWY2190(talk • contributions) 18:15, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- One more thing on Commons, don't put Category:2008 Pacific hurricane season on images. Use this one instead. That way we have all of 01E images in one category and not hundreds of images from 20 storms all together. -CWY2190(talk • contributions) 22:21, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- I forgot you can't move the category. Hmm. Next time we can wait until the storm is done, or the category could just be 01E. -CWY2190(talk • contributions) 23:39, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
