How do I personolize my wikipedia user name signature so that is has different colors, and a direct link to my talk page? Juliancolton 17:36, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure how people do colors and whatnot, personally, I think it's a waste of time. You can look at other people's sigs in edit mode and see what the formatting looks like and then test your own using the preview function. How do I put a number on a list of referances and then put that numbeer on a piece of information. I don't know how to explain it better so here is an example, a piece of information from the Hurricane Felix article:

Felix was upgraded to major hurricane status at around 1800 UTC on September 2 while located about 490 miles (790 km) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.[15]

Put the website address (or cite template, like {{cite news}}) inside <ref> tags, like this: <ref>http://www.example.com</ref> where you want the reference you want to appear. Have a look at WP:REF, and WP:CITE. The general way is to use <ref> tags. It works as following: ::This is some text with a reference <ref>the reference you want to use. You probably want to use a {{citeweb}} or general {{cite}} template</ref> :Then at the end of the article, you have a references section, with a <references /> tag. 2009 Atlantic hurricane season

As said by the article Wikipedia is not a crystal ball states:

"Individual scheduled or expected future events should only be included if the event is notable and almost certain to take place. "

I wouldn't say I'm super good at featured stuff - I just withdrew a Featured List nomination because other people made me realize how it was not ready. I guess I can give you some pointers. The golden rule of article writing is that you are writing for an encyclopedia, which in itself is two keywords, writing and encyclopedia. First, I would recommend that if you use Firefox, to download the newest version that has a spell checker, or another internet browser that uses a spell checker. Spelling correctly is an important part of writing, almost as important as grammar. Developing good grammar skills is something that takes time. Try using all of the techniques you learned in grade school grammar. There is one method I use that I believe makes the prose into more professional, and that is combining sentences and clauses. Short sentences are annoying. They don't tell much. Also, they could easily be combined. Long sentences, however, merge similar thoughts, and in effect tells more with fewer sentences.

The second key aspect of article writing is the subject matter. I have been tracking hurricanes for twelve years of my life, and I've been writing Wikipedia articles for more than two of those. The more you know about the article, there is a better chance you can organize the information better and know what else to add to the article. For hurricane articles, there is a generic format for an article, but every storm is different in areas affected and its severity. Therefore, every article should be different, and the way to treat each article as such is to maintain a rough ratio of text to impact; generally speaking, a hurricane causing $1 billion in damage in one country should have much more information that an area that received $4 million in damage.

I see that one of your tasks on your to do list is to improve List of New York hurricanes. To get that to featured list, the best place to begin would be to just dive right in. Reality check

Hey. Your enthusiasm is great - we could all use some more enthusiasm. However, I need to be honest. A few users have gotten annoyed at your edits, and its seems you could use some guidance. The first step is to calm down :) Every comment on a talk page does not need a reply, such as this or this. Additionally, not every storm needs an article, and some storms in general should not get an article, this year's TD 15 being an example. A tropical depression lasting a few hours in the middle of nowhere does not need an article, particularly since there's not much to write about. Next, I strongly recommend you learn to write better. Grammatically incorrect edits, such as this, those that go against Wiki policy, such as this one, are detrimental to the project. Please take your time and read up on policy, and before creating new articles, perhaps you should read up on some hurricane featured or good articles. Just because an article may appear to be good in your opinion does not mean we should nominate every single one for FAC. Articles may have problems you aren't seeing, plus we have been warned in the past not to flood FAC with articles from the project. Yes, I can. However, to make the ads I use Photoshop and (the discontinued) ImageReady programs that I have access to at school. Therefore, I will have to wait till Monday before I can begin making the ad. Until then, do you have any ideas what you want the ad to have? Tips to article writing

Hey JC, I dug up User:Hurricanehink's tips he gave me over a year ago. I think these may come good for you. Dear Tropical cyclone editor,

As a member of the Tropical Cyclone Wikiproject, you are receiving this message to describe how you can better tropical cyclone articles. There are hundreds of tropical cyclone articles, though many of them are poorly organized and lacking in information. Using the existing featured articles as a guide line, here is the basic format for the ideal tropical cyclone article.

  1. Infobox- Whenever possible, the infobox should have a picture for the tropical cyclone. The picture can be any uploaded picture about the storm, though ideally it should be a satellite shot of the system. If that is not available, damage pictures, either during the storm or after the storm, are suitable. In the area that says Formed, indicate the date on which the storm first developed into a tropical depression. In the area that says Dissipated, indicate the date on which the storm lost its tropical characteristics. This includes when the storm became extratropical, or if it dissipated. If the storm dissipated and reformed, include the original start date and the final end date. Highest winds should be the local unit of measurement for speed (mph in non-metric countries, km/h in metric countries), with the other unit in parenthesis. The lowest pressure should be in mbars. Damages should, when available, be in the year of impact, then the present year. The unit of currency can be at your discretion, though typically it should be in USD. Fatalities indicate direct deaths first, then indirect deaths. Areas affected should only be major areas of impact. Specific islands or cities should only be mentioned if majority of the cyclone's effects occurred there.
  2. Intro- The intro for every article should be, at a minimum, 2 paragraphs. For more impacting hurricanes, it should be 3. The first should describe the storm in general, including a link to the seasonal article, its number in the season, and other statistics. The second should include a brief storm history, while the third should be impact.
  3. Storm history- The storm history should be a decent length, relatively proportional to the longevity of the storm. Generally speaking, the first paragraph should be the origins of the storm, leading to the system reaching tropical storm status. The second should be the storm reaching its peak. The third should be post-peak until landfall and dissipation. This section is very flexible, depending on meteorological conditions, but it should generally be around 3. Storm histories can be longer than three paragraphs, though they should be less than five. Anything more becomes excessive. Remember, all storm impacts, preparations, and records can go elsewhere. Additional pictures are useful here. If the picture in the infobox is of the storm at its peak, use a landfall picture in the storm history. If the picture in the infobox is of the storm at its landfall, use the peak. If the landfall is its peak, use a secondary peak, or even a random point in the storm's history.
  4. Preparations- The preparations section can be any length, depending on the amount of preparations taken by people for the storm. Hurricane watches and warnings need to be mentioned here, as well as the number of people evacuated from the coast. Include numbers of shelters, and other info you can find on how people prepared for the storm.
  5. Impact- For landfalling storms, the impact section should be the majority of the article. First, if the storm caused deaths in multiple areas, a death table would work well in the top level impact section. A paragraph of the general effects of the storm is also needed. After the intro paragraph, impact should be broken up by each major area. It depends on the information, but sections should be at least one paragraph, if not more. In the major impact areas, the first paragraph should be devoted to meteorological statistics, including rainfall totals, peak wind gusts on land, storm surge, wave heights, beach erosion, and tornadoes. The second should be actual damage. Possible additional paragraphs could be detailed information on crop damage or specifics. Death and damage tolls should be at the end. Pictures are needed, as well. Ideally, there would be at least one picture for each sub-section in the impact, though this sometimes can't happen. For storms that impact the United States or United States territories, this site can be used for rainfall data, including an image of rainfall totals.
  6. Aftermath- The aftermath section should describe foreign aid, national aid, reconstruction, short-term and long-term environmental effects, and disease. Also, the storm's retirement information, whether it happened or not, should be mentioned here.
  7. Records- This is optional, but can't hurt to be included.
  8. Other- The ideal article should have inline sourcing, with the {{cite web}} formatting being preferable. Always double check your writing and make sure it makes sense.

Regarding how long the lede should be, keep in mind that the guidelines were written a year ago. Most articles, particularly those impacting land, should have two paragraphs at least. Re: Articles

The three bad articles have been:

  1. Hurricane Marco (1996) - Most of the info is cruddy. The storm history is a copy and paste from the TCR. Although its allowed, a hand-written one would be better. Otherwise, I copied and pasted the info from my sandbox everywhere else.
  2. Hurricane Isaac (2000) - Same as Marco, but instead I didn't bother copying from my other sandbox again.
  3. Tropical Storm Cristobal (2002) - Very cruddy article on a non-notable storm. That's a case of a bad article to work on.

Also, Non-tropical Effects of Hurricane Katrina and Meteorological history of Hurricane Felix are bad cases of articles. Personally, I'd like to see you work on your grammar (don't worry, I'm bad with that too). Also, hard work could go into working on already created articles. Hurricane Luis, Hurricane Carmen, Hurricane Hugo, Hurricane Dora, Hurricane Cleo are examples of articles that need work. Its good that you have enthusiasm, but all these bad articles are becoming a burden for the project. WikiProject Winter storms

This could be a good idea indeed, although what would make it more successful is probably to have a bigger share of winter storm articles on non-North America storms such as in Europe, parts of North Asia (like in China and Korea) and occasionnally in the Middle East and southern Hemisphere, although I know this might be tough to find significant info on those storms away from North America. Perhaps, it can be discussed with the other members at WikiProject Meteorology.--JForget 23:37, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I will think about those but I will wait until some discussion is occuring at the WikiProject first. However, generally as initial guidelines (althoug I will not post them now) would include widespread significant to severe effects, unusual major storm and or at unusual location (i.e Middle East, Great Britain/northern France (Paris), Korea, Argentina, Australia, California/Arizona or northern Florida/Georgia/Alabama, etc.), at least numerous fatalities by the storm (including or not its aftermath) and historic/major power outages. One of those criteria should be met. For example, the last article meets at least 3 of those criteria, while the earlier December storm includes the first criteria, perhaps the third.--JForget 02:04, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Well we could add a template showing the number of articles per quality-level and importance-level like the one at the WP:METEO and other wikiprojects, that would be a first thing as well as a section for potential deletion nominations (PROD's) as well as AFD discussions. Tommorrow, (as it is quite late) I could create a WikiProject Winter Storms template (those with the this article is within the scope of the WikiProject Winter storms. But I am an admin coach, and have co-coached 5 users who have become admins, 4 of whom I co-nominated for adminship in their successful RfAs. I have experience over a wide range of activities, and I'd say my general approach is progressive and direct.
If you'd like me to coach you, I do have several conditions, and they are that you...
  1. fill in all of your edit summaries (if you find yourself forgetting, there's a setting in "my preferences" that will remind you)
  2. watch your coaching page closely, and reply to every post there in a timely fashion
  3. keep the "VC lessons" template somewhere you can access it easily (usually on your user or talk page). I'll place it initially, and then you can move it if you want.
  4. complete all the assignments you are given to the best of your ability. If you have trouble with an assignment, by all means, let me know, so we can discuss possible solutions and alternatives.
  5. take the advice provided by my fellow coaches and your fellow students to heart (this should be a group effort), and I generally invite others I work with to join in on the fun
  6. don't go for your RfA or accept an RfA nomination except from me - I will coordinate your nomination you when I believe you are ready
  7. (optional, though highly recommended) write a lesson for the Virtual classroom. You'll have plenty of time to mull this over, so don't worry about it.

It can be. It sure was in my case. The choices are to either ride it out and overcome it over time, or exercise your right to vanish (and start over). I have a strong presence in a couple very narrow niches (with one major contributor, me), so starting over with a clean slate wouldn't have done me any good, because I'd stick out like a sore thumb regardless. Plus I'm rather attached to my current username, and there are several departments I'm responsible for. If you stay with your current identity, you may overcome objections by addressing them and by approaching your objectors. If there's bad blood between you and anyone on Wikipedia, you shouldn't let that simmer. Instead you should try your best to make amends, which is the right thing to do in most cases anyhow. Apologizing is a good start, and is the civil thing to do. Then include them in the process of your preparation for adminship, and ask them what you need to improve before you will be qualified for the mop. And then, the hardest part, take their feedback to heart and work on the problems they point out. Yes, you will have to swallow your pride, and yes you may have to deal with rejection, but it's the right thing to do. If their advice seems unreasonable, you'll need to think it through carefully and perhaps ask them for further clarification and/or you may need to get feedback from others.
I hate this part of coaching. Because after passing on wisdom like that, I feel compelled to follow my own advice. If I didn't, I'd be nothing but a hypocrite. The Transhumanist 18:48, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Before doing that, I do some research. Hah, but someone would still need to make the article on the hypercane :) I recommend using the website [4], which automatically converts units. Here are the guidelines for units. If the primary unit (such as mph or inch) is rounded to a whole number (like 40), then the converted unit also has to be rounded (40 mph should be 65 km/h). Otherwise, the converted unit should be the same number of significant digits as the primary unit; the number 2 has 1 significant figure, as does 10, 100, and 1000 (zeroes do not count unless there are to the right of the decimal). If the value is 9.13 inches, the converted value should be 232 mm). For storms impacting the United States, you should always do the original unit (metric unit). On reverting anonymous edits

Hi! I saw that you reverted an edit by 71.178.160.96 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) to Hurricane Katrina.

While I know it's tempting to revert on sight any anonymous edit that removes content from an article, there's a couple of checks that you should be doing first. If you suspect vandalism by an IP, it's a good idea to pull up the IP's contributions list. In the worst-case scenario, it will give you a list of other articles that should be checked for damage; in the best case, it will give an explanation for his edits.

In this particular case, 71.178 removed an image ([5]) from the article. Ah-hah, one says, vandalism! Not so—his immediately-previous edit was to the talk page of the article ([6]) where he explained that the picture had been subtly altered to display incorrect information.

Future articles in userspace

I have noticed that you have at least two future articles in your userspace, User:Juliancolton/List of New York hurricanes and User:Juliancolton/Darby (1992). I have a few suggestions/input to offer:

If you look at User:Mitchazenia's Contributions, you should notice that there are 1000 or so edits in userspace (unless Mitchazenia has deleted them since adminship). One of the reasons Mitchazenia has so many userspace edits is the partial creation and then abandonment of future articles that are never finished. This would be like starting User:Juliancolton/Somehurricane but only adding storm history and nothing about impact/preparations/records etc. So if you start a future article, either make sure you finish it and publish it, delete it with the tag {{template:dbuser}} (speedy deletion in userspace), or have someone else finish it and publish it. Since I myself sometimes have two sandboxes going, I won't tell you to only work on one future article at a time because then I'd be a hypocrite, and that's bad. So I'll ask you to keep it at a level you can handle and manage. Only you know you, so you should choose the number you can manage because only you know what you can handle.

Second, please make sure that you are not duplicating the efforts of some other user. This applies to all future article, not just hurricane ones. You can do this by looking at future articles in relevant WikiProjects, looking in people's sandboxes, looking at relevant WikiProjects, or by saying what you intend to create on. This final point is important because saying what you are going to do on say a current projects section on your userpage or in an appropriate talk page also prevents others from duplicating what you are doing. For example, right now, Hurricanehink is nearly finished a future article on Cyclone Inigo. It would be pointless for you to suddenly start to create your own because you would be duplicating what has already been done and it would make merging the pages difficult because administrator assistance would be needed.

Also, you do not have to spend a year looking to make sure you aren't duplicating someone else's sandbox. Just looking at a project talk page should be fine. Even if you do duplicate someone else's effort nothing horrible will happen. It's more important to be bold rather than timid.

Putnam County

Hi, Mitch had also asked me to check your work every now and then. Looks good so far (I gather you've been doing a lot of work on the history section (first graf needs to be cited, BTW), and we have a real one that's better so far than most of the othe HV counties.

I'm also looking at geography, which is still sort of an indiscriminate, disparate listing of facts. These sections are always best when done in prose. The salient fact about Putnam's geography, to me, is that it's more rugged and hilly than either Dutchess or Westchester, since the Appalachians sort of pick up again here (note how much of the Appalachian Trail's New York section has some of its highlights in Putnam. You've got the reservoirs in the eastern third, large state parks (Hudson Highlands and Fahnestock) in the western and central regions and a lot more transportation corridors going north-south (the two Metro-North rail lines and the roads — routes 9D, 9, Taconic and 22) than east-west (NY 301 is really the closest thing to an east-west route in the county as a whole, and it doesn't go all the way, either. All these things are a result of that geography, as well as the fact that it's a lightly populated county outside of the river regions and that whole Brewster-Carmel-Mahopac area. That has to be the theme of the geography section ... you're not writing an essay to prove that, but you're noting it.

If you're finished your goals, then here are a few suggestions.

  • WMO - check the World Meteorological Organization for the cyclone. They release reports every year on cyclones worldwide.
  • JTWC - This archive lists every product the JTWC has released over the past few years. Check for advisories and significant tropical weather outlooks for the appropriate basin.
  • MF - This archive has products issued by Meteo-France in La Reunion, which is the official warning agency for the SW Indian ocean.

Well, JMA has their daily outlooks, which indicates where and how strong a storm is, but there aren't any warning archives. First, if you don't know how to read that data, then how would you make the article on Cat. 5 Australian cyclones? ;) Second, I don't own 2000 Atlantic hurricane season, so you don't need my permission to do the article. That said, I personally think it is easier for seasons that have articles for every storm. Since you did 2006 anyway, I personally think you should do what was done for 2003 and 2005 for 2006; an article called List of storms in the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season would have to be created, and then the main page for 2006 would be re-organized. --♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:46, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

You need to include every storm, first and foremost, but I think that's obvious. The more notable storms should get more information. There should be impact by overall areas (like one paragraph on the Caribbean, one on US, one on Canada), perhaps economic impact (though since there wasn't much economic impact, it might not be needed), and forecasting (indicate how well or how poorly the NHC did in forecasting - info here). --♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:19, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

A template, template:deadliest typhoons exists listing the five deadliest typhoons. I created that template. However, sometimes there are differing death reports, so if you find a reliable source giving a casualty count high enough to put it on the tempate, do it!

I'm sure I read sometime last year that Typhoon Mireille is the costliest typhoon (corrected for inflation). However, I don't remember the source so I might be wrong.

Well thanks for that, although I've fought the founder would be the first to be named the featured user, but it will be up to the WikiProject for that. That would be good to have a newsletter, although not sure if I will decide to help on that, because since I'm already an administrator, not to mention I would also add more major contributions to contents and my lengthy one year post-university break is soon to be over. So I could mostly help with the articles to improved those so to add maybe more material on both Severe weather and non-tropical. Although maybe I could help a bit on a section or two, I will see about that.

It's OK, but it still needs a lot of work. I see a lot of storms that are missing, including at least 12 since 2000. If you're looking to get this to FL status, I will not support if it's not comprehensive. That aside, I see some Wikilink and several typos (either in the prose or in the Wikilinking). For many storms, you merely that a storm hit Long Island, or that it only dropped some rainfall in the state. However, it's more important to give a wide range of effects, when they exist. When writing of deaths caused by a hurricane, be sure to state the number of deaths that were in New York. All in all, it needs some more work. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:58, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I'd like a table listing each storm by the number of deaths it caused in the state. A top right-aligned image is needed. I still think some storms are missing. 96 affected New Jersey, after all. I really don't think you dug deep enough. You only list 10 storms from 1901 to 1950, which I find very unlikely. Several storms still list the overall damage and death totals, which is useless for the state article. I suggest you go back through the archive, slowly, and add some more stats to the article (like if any houses were damaged, and overall more info than just rainfall or wind gusts, when available). ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:02, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Re: Putnam county

The article is looking better, but the history section still pretty much stops at WWII, and there is still no description of the economic picture. The education section is also very short, and accomplishes little more than some brief statements (are there any libraries in the county? that could be added to education). The rest is probably fine, although I'd move the culture section up in the order of sections, probably right after economy, but before transportation. I don't think it's significant when roads were built and such. What I really mean by expanding the history section is more of a description of how the county actually developed economically, politically, and such, in the past 60 years.
