G'day, Isabelle Don't remember whether I mentioned to you my plan to respond to request for translation of some of Les Frères Jacques page in fr.wikipedia into English. Certainly put a note saying that into Talk on the Eng stub page for them. Planning to copy Fr page on a Sandbox page either bit by bit or entire and work on it there. Is that sensible? And is there any general translation advice on Wikipedia? And if you could look at my comments on the fr.wikipedia Les Frères Jacques page and respond, or ask someone more closely involved to do so, that would be grand.
Since writing that, I've been getting on with the job. Using a subpage, to translate and adapt paragraph by paragraph. Then I click Publish changes. Three times now I've done a paragraph or two and clicked Publish changes but that clearly is not the right thing to do because when I go back to Edit source, my translated paragraphs have vanished. I'm never going to be able to do the whole job in one go and I can't be sure that Firefox, which I'm working with, won't go down, as it does from time to time. - Hi MKH! There are two important things to know about translating content from one wiki to another: the first thing you'll need to do is give attribution to the original article when you move your draft to main space. You can also give attribution at the time you create the draft, by adding a link in the edit summary to the version of the page you are translating, something like:
This article is a translation of Les Frères Jacques, more specifically, this version of October 2021
. You also, of course, need to know the language you are translating from and to, to avoid creating a badly translated article, which can end up creating more work for other editors to try and fix it. You can get more advice at Wikipedia:Translation and its related pages. - Wikipedia also has a special page to translate articles from other Wikipedias at Special:ContentTranslation. I'm not sure if you have access to it already, but if you do, I recommend using it, as it saves your work as you are doing it, although it has some drawbacks, since it uses a visual editor. Give it a try!
- Concerning you issue with saving your page, this might be because you are taking too long to finish the edit before saving, which would cause your session to end. If that happens, Wikipedia gives a warning that you lost your session, but you shouldn't lose your edit, it should still be available for you to save it again. If you don't want that to happen, simply open Wikipedia on a different tab before saving your work and your session should reset. Thank you, Isabelle. My French is pretty good, I'm not just sitting there with a dictionary looking it up word by word and if you've been looking, I hope v much that it doesn't read as if that's what I'm doing. I'm a little far off finishing, but when I'm closer, I'll be back here looking at what you said about attribution to the Fr version. In fact, beginner tho' I very much am, I'd say the Fr could do with a little expertise. Particularly in the parts about the sort of 1944-46 period, there are references that I can't get to the bottom of on fr.wikipedia and I'd say that with about half the Fr population born since the Fr J stopped performing in 1982, some of it could do with a little TLC.

- I'm glad to hear you are almost done with the translation, MKHendry! When you are done and ready to move it to the main space, feel free to leave me a message so I can go over it briefly. With regards to the translation's quality, I didn't mean to say you don't know the language, just a generic advice, considering some recent drama in the project related to automatic translations. I personally know very little French, and so won't be able to help with research on the subject, but you are always welcome to help the French project as well. If you want help from other editors, you can always try WikiProjects, such as the WP:WikiProject France, by leaving a message on its talk page (though it's never a guarantee someone will answer). Hello Isabelle, I am busy trying to get my first article read for editor review and I do not like the way the automated TOC looks and has positioned itself. I have been reading all the help info and articles do not address how to proper remove the automated TOC and replace it with TOC in the visual editor. I read all the text editor information and I fell I can easily proceed but my sandbox page is not offering the ability to use text editor. - Hi Ifsowhen! I'm not sure I understand the issue correctly. Is it that you can't edit your sandbox using the source editor? You should be able to edit the source of any page as long as you have "Enable the editing toolbar" marked on your editing preferences. If the issue is that the default table of content is showing before the lede, it's because you've added a level 2 header at the start (== Wolfgang Scheppe ==), which you should remove. Not only will this fix the issue, it is also needed according to our manual of style. I've went ahead and removed it for you so you can see what it should be like. - @Ifsowhen: That happens because you manually typed in "2.1" etc. before each section. Wikipedia's system automatically numbers sections and subsections when a table of content is generated, so, instead of a calling a section "2.1 Migropolis", one can simply call it "Migropolis". Expand Swedish
Hi, Isabelle Belato. Can you tell me what you are trying to accomplish with this change to Template:Expand Swedish? Until something is added to Category:Biography articles needing translation from Swedish Wikipedia, it doesn't really make sense to have this in the template code. Are you planning to recategorize some articles from the main category Category:Articles needing translation from Swedish Wikipedia into the new one, then it would make sense to have it. There are certainly plenty of biographies in that category (probably several hundred) which could benefit from being moved. Mathglot (talk) 08:12, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Mathglot. I added the "bio" tag to that template when I was tagging Felix Körling for possible expansion, using Template:Expand French as an example. After tagging that page, I checked to see if a red category would appear but none did, so I assumed it already existed. Checking the page's categories again, it appears that it was added only to the generic Category:Articles to be expanded from October 2021, it seems. I wouldn't mind help adding the "bio" tag to articles are missing, though I'm not sure how to fix the issue currently. Isabelle 🔔 11:33, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Meanwhile, good job in attempting to create the new topic and categorize an article in it, by following an analogous setup for French, in the absence of any documentation about how to add topics. I'm going to beef up the documentation to provide better guidance how to add a topic, and if you're willing, maybe you could help me test the new documentation, by trying to follow it to create one more 'topic'. - You're welcome. Might take me a day or two to finish the instructions, but I'll get back to you. In the meantime, there's a ton of articles in the main Swedish category, that deserve to be moved to the Biography subcategory. If that's something you feel like working on, you can do it in assembly-line fashion if you keep one browser tab or window open to Category:Articles needing translation from Swedish Wikipedia, and then:
- go down the list, Ctrl+Click on articles that look like a biography, until you have a dozen tabs or so open
- For each article you opened:
- Edit the article and find the {{Expand Swedish}} template
- Paste
|topic=bio
into the template call; it can go anywhere, but after the name is good, e.g.:{{Expand Swedish|Fredrik Aarnseth|topic=bio|date=July 2013}}
- Add an edit summary e.g., Added Expand topic=bio., Preview as needed, and Publish.
- After saving, kill that browser tab and go to the next one; when done, pick a dozen more.
- I just did this for the first ten on the Category page (took me 4 minutes) and you can see them listed now at this subcategory. If you select/copy the
|topic=bio

- Indeed, I've been going through the main category and trying to sort the articles where possible. I did notice that to sort under "Culture" you need to use "culture" instead of the shorter "cult". Reading the template's code, there is both a "cult" and "culture" variable. I considered attempting to fix it but decided to ask you here instead first: would changing "| cult" to "| cult = Culture" fix the issue while allowing for both "cult" and "culture" to be usable when adding a topic without breaking anything? Not a bother at all; to the contrary: your comments and questions (and what amounts to a bug report in your last post; thanks for that!) are really helpful in improving the template and its documentation. - I've gone through it now, Mathglot. That's a very long explanation, but also very helpful. I especially appreciate the explanation on what to add to the new category when creating it, and how to create new topics outside the default ones. The "Quickstart" section will be very useful for people like me, who have a superficial knowledge of template editing, and need some handholding, at least the first few times. I think my only suggestion to improve it would be to try and wikilink "#switch" to a page that explains what it means (Help:Conditional expressions#Using #switch seems like the best place).

Hello after a bit of a gap.
I've done my best with the Frères Jacques. There are very few citations because there are very few on the French page from which I was working. I suspect a lot of it comes from the magazine that is the one citation. It has a website but I couldn't fathom how look at the back issues on line – or even whether you can. The mag has not bothered to respond to my email asking whether you can look at back issues. In the outside sources, I mentioned that the Fr Wiki page has a large discography. I don't think it's worth copying it into En Wiki because anyone remotely interested will have found it long ago. But I was unsure whether to put a link in, and also how to do so. I also mention that Spotify has records and YouTube has film of them. The names of both have links to their Wikipedia articles but I was uncertain whether I should put in links to the actual sites (and if so, how to do so). I'm sure there are other things I don't know whether or how to do. The FJ page in English says two or three Wikipedia projects are interested: should I alert them to what I've done or let them find out for themselves? Somewhere a thing flashed up saying I could ask someone more expert than me to look at the page before I put it up but that seems to have vanished. With a bit of luck, you'll do that. When I do feel ready to put it up, do I just cut and paste it from the source of my user page or is there more to it than that? Responses to any or all of the above gratefully received.

- Hi MKHendry, it's nice to hear again from you. I'm not sure I will be able to answer all your questions, but I'll try my best to help.
- Let's talk citations and sources first. The French article (from which you are translating, if I understood it correctly) contains a lot of notes but very few actual sources, many of which are either about the death of a member or from the magazine Je chante, as you pointed out. My recommendation here is to go search for new sources to verify what is being said, otherwise it's likely that the article won't be accepted or will have those sections removed for lack of reliable sources. Much of the article as is right now is unsourced, including in its French version.
- You say you tried to contact the magazine, in order to verify the information and possibly continue sourcing the article, which is a laudable endeavor. Unfortunate that they did not answer you. Since your account is still much too young, you cannot access the Wikipedia Library, which gives access to a number of databases for free (one of which contains copies of Le Monde, which might've been helpful). But, you can always ask for help at the Resource Exchange project, where editors with access to those databases (and others) can provide sources that you usually couldn't access.
- With regards to the discography, I don't think there is any harm in adding the list in your English article (again, will need some sources, but these should be easier). If you don't want to add everything due to its size (and, as you say, those interested might already know of it), you can simply add their most famous ones and, in the External Link section, add a link to a website that contains a more expansive list. You say that you mention the French article in your draft, but I don't think I've ever seen that done, so it might go against the manual of style. I'd avoid adding a link to YouTube and Spotify, as it might be perceived as advertisement.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Who is "both"?- I'd highly recommend you leave a not at the more relevant WikiProjects' talk pages, which would be WikiProject France (here) and WikiProject Music (here). Simply write a short paragraph explaining you are trying to expand the Les Frères Jacques article by translating from the French Wikipedia, but might need help finding more sources, and leave a link to your subpage. No one might respond (which is somewhat common), but you might also find other interested editors who might be able to help. WikiProjects are very useful exactly because of that.

But putting it simply, you must add a link to the article you are translating from in your edit summary to give proper attribution. Good morning, Isabelle, and many thanks for a very full answer to my questions. I will read, mark and inwardly digest the whole thing – as you know, I'm not terribly speedy at these things. But I would just like to say that I was looking out of curiosity at en.Wikipedia's page about the Frères Jacques a day or four after thinking I could offer my services and it said: "Translation from French page, please." So that's what I tried to do. I don't think I'm up for re-researching and improving a French page that seems to me not to come up to the standards en.Wikipedia sets. So as I say, I'll have a hard look at all the things you mention but if en.Wikipedia editors ultimately reject my page, that's up to them and I'll perhaps see if there's some other way I can contribute.

Incorporate the sections that are sourced and, as you find more sources, add them to the main article. I have put a request for help on the Resource Exchange project; I have put a note in what seemed an appropriate part of the WikiProject France page; I have spurned the WikiProject Music page as I couldn’t find anywhere even remotely appropriate; I have had a look at the two wiki translate links you suggested and I will go to the manual of style to see what it has to say – I have looked at it but there’s an awful lot there to memorise. I’ve also put on the line you suggested about my page being a translation of the French page. I may yet be back for more help, if you can bear it.

- @Dinuli.M.K.: I assume that is related to some of the content you added recently to Gordonia speciosa. The content that is present on Wikipedia is under a specific Creative Commons License, which means that everything we add must be under the same or similar license. We cannot add something from another website, book, video etc. because those are usually, as you said yourself, copyrighted by their owners. For the same reason a radio station cannot play a music without being given permission from its artist, we cannot add content without permission from their owners. Have you tried using the project's Upload Wizard? If there are no copyright issues, you should choose the option that leads you to the Commons' Upload Wizard, which is the Wikimedia project that collects freely licensed files. If you are having technical issues, I recommend leaving a message at their Help Desk. Their editors should be able to help you upload and correctly license the files. - Hi there, Dinuli.M.K.. When you submit a draft, it's added to a queue alongside all other drafts that have yet to be accepted or rejected. Due to the voluntary nature of this work, it's not uncommon for that to slowly grow as the months go by, meaning that sometimes it can take anywhere between a couple days to a couple months for an editor to get to you.
- Concerning your second question, although it is not strictly prohibited to write about something or someone you are close to, it is seen as a bad practice due to conflict of interest. No one is free from bias, but we try our best to avoid it, and this includes not writing about subjects we are close to. It's instead recommend you request edits so that an unbiased editor may decide if the content is due or not to be addded. Isabelle 🏴☠️ 12:14, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

- Hi there Dinuli.M.K.. Thanks so much for that cute kitten! I have a pet cat called Alice, and she is the most precious thing to me (even though she can be a bit feisty at times!). With regards to your question, a user page is a place where we can write a bit about ourselves as Wikipedia editors. Some users like to showcase their achievements (such as created articles, barnstars received and so on), some prefer to use it to let others know what they like to write about through the use of userboxes, while others might simply redirect it to their talk page. It's not a place to create drafts for articles, though. If you don't know what to write in there, you can simply leave it blank, or you can use other users' page as examples (that's how I got to mine). Isabelle 🔔 15:17, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Let me explain, the website is about new thought (which is the spiritual current to whom Grace Mann Brown took part), all the free books are so old that they are not copyrated, they all fall in this catégory. The website is about neville Goddard which is also dead and his material not copyrighted anymore (who was an author of the new thought movement), but it includes lots of other authors about the same subject. I could'nt find these references you removed on the archive website alas.
I'm not sure i have done this post the good way, you can correct if needed (about the syntax)
- @Sandiepichereau: We usually do not add external links in the body of an article, as per WP:EL. In addition to that, external links should lead readers to places that will help them better understand the topic at hand. In addition to that, the works of the subject where you were reverted already contain links (in form of citations) to her works in the Internet Archive website, so adding further links give the impression of trying to advertise the website you are linking to. RFA 2021 Completed
The 2021 re-examination of RFA has been completed. 23 (plus 2 variants) ideas were proposed. Over 200 editors participated in this final phase. Three changes gained consensus and two proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration. Thanks to all who helped to close the discussion, and in particular Primefac, Lee Vilenski, and Ymblanter for closing the most difficult conversations and for TonyBallioni for closing the review of one of the closes.
The following proposals gained consensus and have all been implemented:
- Revision of standard question 1 to
Why are you interested in becoming an administrator?
Special thanks to xaosflux for help with implementation. - A new process, Administrative Action Review (XRV) designed to review if an editor's specific use of an advanced permission, including the admin tools, is consistent with policy in a process similar to that of deletion review and move review. Thanks to all the editors who contributed (and are continuing to contribute) to the discussion of how to implement this proposal.
- Removal of autopatrol from the administrator's toolkit. Special thanks to Wugapodes and Seddon for their help with implementation.
The following proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration:
- An option for people to run for temporary adminship (proposal, discussion, & close)
- An optional election process (proposal & discussion and close review & re-close)
Editors who wish to discuss these ideas or other ideas on how to try to address any of the six issues identified during phase 1 for which no proposal gained are encouraged to do so at RFA's talk page or an appropriate village pump.
A final and huge thanks all those who participated in this effort to improve our RFA process over the last 4 months.

Hi. My name is Brian McEntee and am a student at Klein High. I recently was involved in a hearing/appeal through the district and the result was me getting my punishment overturned. This is the first time it has ever happened in Klein ISD history. I have the official statement from a Joffrey Jones who is the Executive Director of Campus Safety and Support proving that this event did in fact take place.
