Garry's mod edits

The gamemode has appeared in every game since Black ops 3 apart of Infinite Warfare (and I'm gonna bet it's gonna appear in the latest one as well), so it's not accurate to say it only appeared in 3 titles. I fail to see why you insist on having it there repeated. ForTheGoodOfAllofUs (talk) 16:51, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

I was going off the Call of Duty wiki that only three games (the two listed + WWII) contained the mode; it was last updated in August 2021, so I believed it to be up-to-date. However, even if it was in every game since Black Ops III (minus Infinite Warfare and apparently Vanguard, according to a preliminary search), it would be five games in a series of at least eighteen, hence why generalizing the series feels misleading to me. I don't think that it hurts to list two games from the same franchise. As I noted previously, they come from separate developers (Treyarch / Raven Software) and we have two independent sources (which you added originally) that denote the impact of these additions. If anything, it shows explicitly that the mode was popular enough among players of the series that it was included more than once. It is also five examples in total, which I believe is a good number of examples. Regards, IceWelder [] 17:18, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Despite being a rather big game, the CoD wiki has a bad reputation of containing mistakes and missing content, so I wouldn't use it as a primal source of information. The reason I said it's cynic is because it's widely known the titles are self-similar (even more these days I would say), with Prop Hunt being a perfect example of an adaption into the repeated formula, and so the significance does not lay within the different studios (which are all under the same publisher) who act as the workforce, but rather in Prop Hunt becoming a part of the franchise. I said I bet it will get on Vanguard because it has always been added as an update throughout the year since it was introduced . I guess it's okay to have 2 titles from the same franchise there but I'd choose a different option. Regards. ForTheGoodOfAllofUs (talk) 17:55, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Reverted

Why you revert this page about sliding DFT and Draft:Grand Theft Auto VI? I just added stub template to Sliding DFT and I just changed infobox on Draft:Grand Theft Auto VI to add the fact that Rockstar North created Grand Theft Auto series 36.74.43.234 (talk) 08:42, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

When you have a history of vandalism and then make edits that you cannot provide sources for, they will again be considered vandalism. And you have not "just added stub template to Sliding DFT"; you also added text content that you could not source and, to cover for that, you marked it as requiring a citation. This fails WP:BURDEN. The North Korea Barnstar of National Merit

The North Korea Barnstar of National Merit
I, Finnusertop, award you, IceWelder, the North Korea Barnstar of National Merit on behalf of the North Korea working group of WikiProject Korea for successfully nominating for Good Article status the article Pyongyang Racer. It's always fascinating to see obscure connections between interests so diverse as North Korea and video games. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 13:33, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Pyongyang Racer

On 31 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Pyongyang Racer, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Issue with script?

I recently undid this edit by @Gog the Mild, as it broke the sfn referencing. As I understand it, the script changed the dashes inside the {{sfn}}, but not the corresponding ones inside the {{sfnref}}, probably because that is inside a cite template. Perhaps you need to add {{sfn}} and friends to your exclusion list? —Kusma (talk) 18:02, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

This edit by @Femkemilene is another example; I think @Jo-Jo Eumerus was a bit confused by things suddenly breaking during his FAC. —Kusma (talk) 18:03, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
@Kusma The article is technically wrong using the work's title for harvid/sfnref; the template is designed to use the author's last name. But you're right that the name in sfn templates should not be changed -- especially if it contained a person's name. I have added "sfn" to the script's exclusions. Regards, IceWelder [] 18:57, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! I agree that in this example, the article is not doing it in the optimal way. But the script should not break references, and as it leaves the targets of the {{sfn}} links alone, it mustn't do anything to the reference names. I guess it was a pretty rare issue. Thank you again for your prompt fix. —Kusma (talk) 19:32, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Selenagomez1992droberti2003

FYI, seems like it's best to wait until they're blocked and then revert their edits at this point, given how they're going to keep reverting the reverts. Already reported at ANI, and seems likely to be a sockpuppet: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/RobertiBrownHadleySuplickFamily21stCentury2K20s-2020s-FY20s-present. Magitroopa (talk) 10:54, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

I have seen a lot of sockees, but this one is new to me. Thanks for the heads-up. IceWelder [] 10:57, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
New to me as well- only started investigating further due to disruptive/incorrect/edit warring/etc. on Wipeout (2021 game show).
...and turns out I'm blind. 'RobertiBrownHadleySuplickFamily21stCentury2K20s-2020s-FY20s-present' was actually originally blocked for sockpuppetry. Yep, it gets much deeper... seems like Selenagomez1992droberti2003 is part of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CJEDJCRobertiPARMMSCTBrown2000s-2010s-2020s (I've already asked for a merge of my newly created SPI into that one, lol). Magitroopa (talk) 11:09, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
The sock (and other socks, it seems) is also active across many Wikimedia projects. A global lock request for all these socks should be requested. This will be quite the mess to clean up. IceWelder [] 11:13, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
Tried my best, lol. First time reporting/requesting a global lock (I guess there's a first time for everything...?) Feel free to add/explain better there if my wording is trash, wasn't exactly sure what to write. Magitroopa (talk) 11:31, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
I saw the thread, thanks for your work on this. I added the other accounts that are part of this sock farm to the request but so far, it seems only the newest sock has been blocked. I had also started going through each account's cross-wiki edits but I didn't manage to go through all of them in time. I might do some more later today. IceWelder [] 10:15, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Crytek

Re your revert[1] of my edit. I did a few more checks of the URL https://www.crysis.com/blog/new-crysis-game-confirmed ... and it seems that the site is issuing bogus HTTP 404 errors. See e.g. https://web.archive.org/save/https://www.crysis.com/blog/new-crysis-game-confirmed, which is the same as my script got. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:07, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Please help: unable to install citationstyle

I just saw the results of somebody using citationstyle, and I thought I would like to try that myself. So I put the following into my common.js:

{{subst:lusc|User:IceWelder/citationstyle.js}}

When I do a Preview, it shows as:

mw.loader.load( '/w/index.php?title=User:IceWelder/citationstyle.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' ); // Backlink: [[User:IceWelder/citationstyle.js]]

But when I try to save, it gives the error messasge "The document contains errors. Are you sure you want to publish?" So I cancel, not wanting to cause problems.

Can anybody suggest what I am doing wrong?--Gronk Oz (talk) 08:33, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

@Gronk Oz: The warning is normal because the JavaScript parser only sees {{subst:lusc..., which is not valid. However, the MediaWiki parser will turn this into the correct mw.loader.load(... when you save, resolving the issue. When you dismiss the warning and save anyways (thereby triggering the MediaWiki parser's conversion), then open and save again with no changes, you will see that the warning is gone. Regards, IceWelder [] 09:11, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

Hasbro Interactive page

I was wondering that considering you merged the GT Interactive page into "Atari, Inc." many years ago (I think it was you who did it, but I don't remember as it was so long ago), is it fine if I do the same with the Hasbro Interactive page? Considering that Atari SA has said in their reports and all that the current company that trades under that name is the ex-Hasbro Interactive/Infogrames Interactive. The Atari Interactive that Hasbro/Infogrames owned was a separate subsidiary that merged into Infogrames Interactive during the rebranding. I'm going to be editing the page before I change the name of it to prepare for the move.

I also am doing this because there are several Infogrames titles copyrighted and published to a different subsidiary, so for instance, Master of Orion III is published to "Infogrames Interactive", which is the ex-Hasbro assets. Luigitehplumber (talk) 16:41, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

"Merkle" pages

Hello, IceWelder,

I just wanted to thank you for your anti-vandalism work over the past day with the recent vandal accounts who moved articles to incorrect titles and then changed the article content to be in agreement with the wrong title. You were really on top of everything! If you see this kind of persistent vandalism, which doesn't stop when one account is blocked, please make an admin who is active aware of what is occurring. And if they are a checkuser, they can make sure that the vandal doesn't have multiple accounts to turn to when the first account is blocked. Thanks again! Liz Read! Talk! 23:44, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

@Liz: Sure! When the situation cooled down, I created an SPI to reqest a CheckUser look over it. Lo and behold, eight undocumented socks and sleepers emerged as well as a connection to the actual puppeteer that I hadn't known yet. Apart from the one article yesterday, the user isn't really active in my topic area, so it is unlikely that I'll see them again. If I do so regardless, I will file a new SPI case and alert you. For the time being, I have gone through all known socks' edits and reverted them where possible. I'm also curious why you recreated the redirects Hymenaei Merkle and Herbert II, Count of Merkle. They are solely vandalism and not of use to anyone. I fixed the double-redirects. Regards, IceWelder [] 09:25, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Oh, well, they showed up on the broken redirects page so I recreated them so one of our bots could fix the double redirect. Sometimes I do the work, sometimes, I let our efficient bots take care of things. For me, it depends on the number of pages that need to be fixed after a bad page move. Now that you have gone ahead and fixed them, I'll delete them. Much appreciated! Liz Read! Talk! 17:11, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

File change summary

Hello, IceWelder,

Could you leave a brief summary when you alter an image? I'm deleting some previous versions of files you've updated and I see that you often leave no explanation of what you have done to the image. Most editors just leave a brief edit summary like "resizing" or "enhancing color" or some sort of explanation. It helps future editors who might work on these images know what changes you've done and it's just a good practice in editing to leave a brief summary. Thanks in advance, for your help in this. Liz Read! Talk! 02:41, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

I replaced them with version distributed by the publisher. To signify this change, I always reworked the "Summary" sections with the new source (alongside other fixes). The qualitative changes (better resolution, color, less compression, un-cropping, removal of region logos, ...) differ between images. IceWelder [] 08:31, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

Question regarding Raven

I've brought this up on the Raven Software talk page but according to the old Raven website the company was founded in 1988, not 1990 [2]. Which source should we use here? Timur9008 (talk) 22:25 ,27 March 2022 (UTC)

Probably depends on the definition. Per [3], "Brian Raffel and his brother Steve started playing around with computeer games in Brian['s] basement in 1988 and formed the company two years later." The canonical founding year nowdays appears to be 1990, so I would use that. 1988 should be mentioned in the body as desribed in the source. Regards, IceWelder [] 19:38, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Inscryption's importance rating

The reason I set Inscryption's importance rating to Mid was that it had achieved wide commercial success and received critical acclaim. And, as per the importance rating scale, that should mean it's Mid rating. You can see that on the page itself, on the Reception part. Can you explain why it shouldn't be Mid? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RteeeeKed (talkcontribs) 19:39, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

It received posivitve reviews (85/100 on Metacritic) but is not exactly critically acclaimed, nor has it had a "wide sub-culture effect outside of their country of origin". Whether or not 1 million copies are "wide commercial success" is probably a matter of opinion - in mine, it is not when compared to other successful releases of the past years. IceWelder [] 20:01, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
While the amount of copies is indeed a matter of opinion, I would say that the critically acclaimed thing is true. It's won five awards including the game of the year and has been nominated for several others. Several other review sites have given it positive reviews. Metacritic isn't the only factor when it comes to whether or not a game is critically acclaimed. If you feel that it's just Low, that's fine, but I think it should be Mid. I may bring this to the Inscryption talk page for other opinions soon. RteeeeKed (talk) 20:13, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
Feel free to do so. IceWelder [] 20:30, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Traveller's Tales and Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Hey, I noticed from the Traveller's Tales page history that you've been reverting everyone who lists Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as you claim it was developed by TT Fusion. However, I can't seem to find a source that TT Fusion was the developer. Additionally, Steam lists the Developer as Traveller's Tales [1], and Xbox lists the developer as TT Games [2]> (though Xbox also lists a lot of the other LEGO games as developed by TT Games that are listed as developed by Traveller's Tales by that list on the wiki page). I have edited the Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens page as well to reflect this, but please let me know if you have a source that says that TT Fusion was the main developer for Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and not Traveller's Tales. ScorchRaserik (talk) 23:31, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi @ScorchRaserik. TT Fusion is clearly credited as the developer in the credits, which also list TT Fusion's staff. WBIE always mixes up TT Games, Traveller's Tales and TT Fusion, so the credits appear to be a better metric than publisher-entered storefront data. IceWelder [] 05:46, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

File:God of War III cover art.jpg

Hi IceWelder. Your edit to the non-free use rationale for File:God of War III cover art.jpg changed things in a way that led to the file being removed from God of War III by a bot since its use in that article no longer meets WP:NFCC#10c. It's not clear why you changed the location where the file was being used from "God of War III" to "God of War II" because the file wasn't and still isn't being used in the GOWII article. Perhaps this was just done by mistake, but as a result the file has now been tagged for speedy deletion per WP:F5. So, if it was a mistake, then you should try and go back a "fix" the rationale before the file ends up being deleted. At the same time, if you intentionally changed the article name in the rationale to reflect a new use of the file in GOWII, then you should add the file to that article before it ends up deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:25, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

A small typo and the bot choses the lethal option... Should be fixed now. IceWelder [] 06:45, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
The bot isn't able to tell it was a small typo; so, it does what it's been tasked to do. The bot's operator or human file reviewer will sometimes manually fix typos like this, but you actually made the same typo twice so it can be hard to tell whether it was intentional and not a typo. The same goes with the different bot that tagged the file for speedy deletion; it doesn't know why a non-free file isn't being used per WP:NFCC#7, only that it isn't being used. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:57, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Koch Media edit

It's okay if you reverted my edit, the reason why I did that. It was because I always find spaces between templates being eyesores for me. Esaïe Prickett (talk) 16:37, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Also, I don't really like spaces between a template and a category. But it's your choice if you like it to remain there! 😊 Esaïe Prickett (talk) 16:39, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

The templates are organized logically: First the content for "external links", then nav templates, then categories. That is standard practice and many find it to be beneficial. IceWelder [] 16:41, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Question about video game infobox guidelines

Hello IceWelder. A second ago I edited the page for Rayman 2 giving release dates for the game in Japan on the consoles it came out on in that region. You reverted it saying my source was no good (understandable) and that the infobox guidelines say not to add Japanese release dates for western games. Can you clarify on the infobox guidelines thing? I looked at the infobox video game guidelines and I couldn't find anything on it so I am just confused. I went looking for better sources for release dates and I got some old official Japanese magazines for the release dates of the DC and PS2 versions in Japan, but before I edit again I wanted to ask you about what you said. Sorry if this is formatted poorly, this is my first time using a talk page. LimeJinjo (talk) 23:22, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

@LimeJinjo: I'm primarily referring to the guidance from Template:Infobox video game, which reads:

Add release dates according to the platforms field, for English-language regions and the developer's region.

This is extended at WP:VG/RELEASE, specifically:

In the {{Infobox video game}}, release dates should be provided for primarily English-speaking regions, including North America, Europe, and Australia/New Zealand. If the video game is first released in a non-English country, commonly in Japan, then that should also be stated. (...) Releases in non-English countries should otherwise not be included in the infobox, but if determined to be necessary to include, can be discussed further in the article's body.

Both of these would exclude, for example, Japanese dates for a French-developed game. If you have other questions, feel free to ask. Regards, IceWelder [] 08:17, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
I see, thank you! LimeJinjo (talk) 23:29, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Embracer Group Edit Reversion

Hi. I saw you undid my edit on the Embracer Group page ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embracer_Group ).

In the edit info section, you said "Restored revision 1087062271 by SamCraftRecon (talk): Undo for now. The table has almost unmanagable proprotions already". The info such as the separate table parts for when a studio was founded and when it was acquired was undone and almost all of or all of my edit.

Apologies if there were things wrong with it. May I ask how I could fix it and add back the contents of my edit? If its regarding the dating template dts, I'm not sure why but when I was doing that edit in the visual editor, I would type in dts to find it and similar things would pop up to choose from along with what seemed like a different version of it called Dts (capital D instead of no capital). Is this the same as dts?

While I'm definitely not as familiar with Wikipedia editing as you are from looking at your profile page, I'd still like to try work on it the correct way.

Sorry for the long message mate!

Thanks, Sam. SamCraftRecon (talk) 00:06, 13 May 2022 (UTC)

Apologies if there were things wrong with it.

There was nothing wrong with your edit per se. I just feel that the table, already in its current state, is incredibly convoluted, which makes it rather unhelpful for readers. I already had a similar discussion with other editors before Saber had started its acquisition spree and the issue is worse now. What I would like to do in the long run is bring all significant information over to List of mergers and acquisitions by Embracer Group, which could be restructured in sections (e.g. one section per operating group), and then reduce the table on the main Embracer article to just those groups. I just need to find the time to do that.

similar things would pop up to choose from along with what seemed like a different version of it called Dts (capital D instead of no capital). Is this the same as dts?

Yes, on Wikipedia, the very first letter of everything is case-insensitive. The default rendering for all is upper-case but lower-case will always redirect there. Regards, IceWelder [] 09:02, 13 May 2022 (UTC)

Tables are certainly awkward to use on mobile, that's for sure. So the table restructuring would be a good idea.

Just to make sure I've correctly understood (and that I haven't misunderstood), you want to move details such as when each studio was founded, when they were acquired, and so on, to the List of mergers and acquisitions by Embracer Group ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Embracer_Group ) and just have the table or tables in the main Embracer Group page be each part/division of Embracer Group, and the studios or other groups that are part of each division, and nothing else (except maybe references).

Oh so the first letter of everything on Wikipedia is case insensitive. That's good to know. So I can use Dts since it's basically dts. Got it.

If you would like, I could help. I definitely won't be as good as editing as you are considering your profile says you're one of the best editors on Wikipedia, but I'm more than willing to try.

Thanks for the reply mate. SamCraftRecon (talk) 02:38, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

In regards to this edit you made:

I checked the Moby Games site for LJN, and it says that Acclaim Entertainment closed LJN down in 1995. According to the overview, it says "LJN was founded in 1970 by Jack Friedman, originally as a toy company. In 1985, MCA, who at the time owned Universal City Studios, Inc., bought LJN so Universal could make the movies and LJN could make the toys. In 1987, LJN began publishing games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. LJN never developed the games, they were only the publisher. Also in 1987, LJN began selling a line of highly realistic-looking water guns under the name Entertech. Due to company losses and controversy surrounding the Entertech guns, MCA sold LJN, in 1989, to Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. Acclaim shut down, sold or phased out all toy divisions and continued using LJN as a video game publisher until 1995, when LJN was folded into Acclaim. The U. S. Dreamcast version of Spirit of Speed 1937 was released using the LJN name but the company itself no longer existed at that time." So of course, this does come off as confusing to other people. DarkMatterMan4500 (talk) (contribs) 12:54, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

MobyGames is an unreliable source edited by users, and that particular overview's history shows that the page was written only in 2015 (most likely based on the old Wikipedia article, which stated 1995 as the closing date). I tend to believe a professionally edited and published book source more than a tertiary source. IceWelder [] 13:05, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
Ah, I see then. DarkMatterMan4500 (talk) (contribs) 13:13, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Grand Theft Auto 4

Hello, this is awkward topic to research and message you about but the information you reverted that soliciting prostitutes in GTA 4 does replenish Niko's health just like in the previous games in the series is correct. It is almost impossible to find a secondary source that mentions that fact, so I will have to find and use a primary source of gameplay footage that proves it since every little detail about a video game's gameplay needs a source apparently. ₛₒₘₑBₒdyₐₙyBₒdy₀₅ (talk) 17:19, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

It is almost impossible to find a secondary source that mentions that fact

If it plays that little of a role in the game that not one secondary source mentions it, it likely is not relevant enough to include. There needs to be reliable secondary source for such a claim; any gameplay video uploaded by users falls under WP:USERG/WP:SPS again and is not an adequate replacement. You can try to use WP:VG/SE to better focus your search. IceWelder [] 17:28, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
Ice Welder, "If it plays that little of a role in the game that not one secondary source mentions it, it likely is not relevant enough to include"
In this specific instance, it is relevant enough to include and here's why. The sentence that I mentioned this information on is detailing the different methods in the game where the main character, Niko Bellic, can replenish his health which the article includes every method in the game except that one. This information is directly correlating and of relevance to that specific sentence and to overall gameplay as picking up and soliciting prostitutes has been a consistent and notorious feature of every Grand Theft Auto game since the transition into 3D for the franchise with GTA 3.
P.S. side question, I'm curious why primary sources are completely discarded for credibility on video game articles unlike some other forms of media? I understand removing it for most sections on an article except gameplay, where footage of the gameplay itself is some of the most reliable evidence next to a clip from a film or a series of quotes from a novel. Another question too, what would make these other methods like eating, drinking and calling the paramedics more relevant to mention than this one? I appreciate your response and giving me the link for this search engine. ₛₒₘₑBₒdyₐₙyBₒdy₀₅ (talk) 17:49, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
Relevance comes from inclusion in secondary sources and as such can be added if there is such a source. Primary sources can be used to plug some gaps if needed, but this is not recommended for most cases. However, primary sources are only those published by people or entities involved with the subject (Rockstar Games in this case). User video uploads are therefore not primary sources, and per WP:SPS, they cannot be used. Either way, I implore you to try WP:VG/SE's search engine. Based on a preliminary search using it, there seem to be plenty of possible sources. Some even connect it to the censorship in Australia. IceWelder [] 17:59, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello IceWelder,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 805 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 852 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello IceWelder,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12991 articles, as of 10:00, 20 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

MachineGames Indiana Jones

Hi! Do you see more sources for the MachineGames Indiana Jones game? I was thinking of creating the article but I think it's WP:TOOSOON. Was wondering what you think. Timur9008 (talk) 21:04 ,25 June 2022 (UTC)

Crackshells credit lists

Tried to add the correct credits and roles for the Serious Sam's Bogus Detour game, mistakenly deleted it all instead. In case you need verification; I am one of the former Crackshell devs that can verify the roles for that project. It's a bit obscure to find references to the roles on the web, but here are some mentions: (Christian Nordgren) ChrisN on tigsource -Artist, did a lot of VFX work, enemy and boss design + animation. (Victor Ankarberg) Referenced as Game Artist at Crackshell here -Artist, did a lot of level art, props and icons. (Angelo Geels) Is a former programmer on Serious Sam Revolution, usually referred to as Scratch or Miss in public forums. - Programmer, worked on engine and supported Niklas Myrberg. (Jonas Gustafsson) Designer at Crackshell, did Vacation on Crab Island mod for SSBD workshop (along with intern Alfred Löfving). - Designer, latest addition to the SSBD project, worked mainly on Crab Island mod.

As it is in most indie studios, defined roles are kind of hard to stick to. The devs had their designated roles, but most of us was multi-disciplinary and did a lot of different stuff. Artists could do level design and audio work, designers could do pixel art and scripting, programmers generally didn't have much time to do anything else but there was a bunch of VFX and tech art done at times. Dustymeats (talk) 17:56, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

I absolutely get where you're coming from, but verifiability must prevail: What we need are one or more sources that concretely tie a person to their [primary] role for a game. The credits often serve as such but, as established, those for Bogus Detour only list the developers by name. Who I indeed missed from the sources that we already use is Christian Nordgren, who comes up as the game's artist in the one of the TIGSource references (and I will add him shortly). Ankarberg, Geels, Gustafsson, and Löfving all don't turn up in sources that specify them as Bogus Detour developers. I'm frequently on the lookout for new sources, but of course press interest in game has waned over the years. As long as the current situation persists, we unfortunately cannot include those role–name pairs. Additionally, as far as I am aware, Geels is trans and now goes by a different first name, which is extra difficult to source.
This case is very similar to that of Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack!, which also had credits without roles and no other sources named its artist as being the artist. The article consequently lacked this credit until the developer published this press site with proper credits. I hope that Crackshell could provide such a solution in the future, e.g. by updating this page to include the credits per game. Maybe as a former developer, you still have contact with the studio and could ask them to perform such an update? IceWelder [] 19:12, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Reference from their official twitter account; pixel artist for Heroes of Hammerwatch, Hammerwatch 2 and SSBD; Nordgren & Ankarberg.
Melissa Geels and Jonas Gustafsson is a bit trickier for SSBD specifically. Best would be if I could check if CS could publicly post an updated credits list somewhere. Dustymeats (talk) 22:06, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
I suppose the Twitter reference works for Ankarberg at the moment. Of course, a public credits list would still be a huge plus here. IceWelder [] 16:09, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Aight! I'll see what I can do. Dustymeats (talk) 21:30, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

MachineGames Employee count

Hi. Regarding you reverting the MachineGames employee count. Having it still be 50 people is completely asinine. The company is currently developing an Indiana Jones game and Wolfenstein III. If we assume that the company has split its employee count between the two games, we get 25 people currently developing each game. That is the size of an indie studio. And we're talking about two games in very well known franchises. Bethesda can afford to hire more people. It was bought by Microsoft for 8 billion dollars.

With such a small employee count, it would also be much harder to crank out stuff like Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot and their various Quake projects as a larger portion of the studio's overall staff has to be allocated to the game which means even less people to work on their big projects.

Looking at their list of games developed, it is blatantly clear that some degree of parallel development has occurred during a large part of their history too which also requires more employees

In short for the projects that MachineGames are working on, 50 people simply isn't gonna cut it. Modern AAA games are becoming increasingly more employee intensive.

Secondly, I did actually find two sources to help further estimate how many employees MachineGames has. https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/machinegames-sweden-ab https://www.apollo.io/companies/MachineGames/556dc857736964122fde8d01?chart=count Crunchbase has the widest estimate but still places the minimum estimate at double their 2013 count. Apollo gives us 160 as the employee count. This sounds reasonable considering how many people work on other game companies. I am however willing to assume that the real number can be even higher but that is speculation.

Third, even if these sources are not good enough, Having the estimate be 150 instead of 50 is a much better number as it atleast has some logic behind it compared to none at all. Really I'd find a current guess much more useful information than an old figure that has no relevance anymore.

In conclusion, I will be changing the estimate to 150 again. I also suggest updating the employee count for another ZeniMax subsidiary: Tango Gameworks. Their figure is from the company was 2 years old and hadn't yet made The Evil Within or Ghostwire: Tokyo. I remember not finding a good source for their employee count though. 78.69.234.193 (talk) 19:05, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia should not be used for user-made estimates, that is original research. I fully understand that an old figure might not be representative of a company's current state, but these numbers always exist in the context of when they were retrieved. In this case, it is made clear that the number is from 2013, not 2022. In my opinion, having an old figure is better than no figure at all.
You already correctly identified Crunchbase and Apollo as problematic sources. Crunchbase is entirely edited by users, whereas Apollo scrapes data from LinkedIn, which in turn is edited by users as well. Neither satisfies WP:RS (or, more specifically, both violate WP:USERG). Yes, it would be nice if we had a newer number, but it is not Wikipedia's fault when these do not exist in any reliable source, nor is it Wikipedia's job to estimate a new one regardless of how many parameters (like number of projects) we could factor into such a calculation.
This problem would be so easily resolved if any company in the chain—Microsoft, Xbox, ZeniMax, Bethesda, or MachineGames itself—would just release a new number. But at the moment, there is not much we can do. It appears another user has already reverted your revert. I will keep my eyes open for new sources. If we're luck, Microsoft's 2022 Annual Report will give some insight. IceWelder [] 22:45, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Removal of NukemNet mention on Duke Nukem 3D

Hi, I have noticed you removed my mention of NukemNet, which is another free multiplayer launcher for duke3d. Why did you choose to single-out this launcher, removing it, while allowing the other 2 to remain? Alonamir89 (talk) 16:08, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

The content added rather obviously attempted to promote the program in question, even providing a mid-text external link. It was not supported by any secondary reliable sources that reflected the program's notability, so there was no case for its inclusion. However, upon a review of the remaining content based on your message, it appeared that the other programs in that section had similar sourcing issues. As a result, all of them have been removed for now. Should there be better sources in the future, I will look into writing a better summary that does not focus on individual programs (unless some are exceptionally noteworthy). New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello IceWelder,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Codename Gordon

Huh, turns out we're both right. It's completely inconsistent. For example, here's the official website back in the day: [4] The name at the top has the colon, but in the news-posts it's written without the colon. And check the screenshot in your own provided source. The Steam-app name is without the colon, yes, but the screenshot contains it again.

Anyway, the game itself gives the trademark as "Codename Gordon" in the main menu, so without the colon is probably best. I'll update the few other instances of the with-colon name in other articles here on Wikipedia. Oh, I see that the colon-mention I originally found was IGN getting the game's title wrong in their article on it, which is used as a reference. That serves me right for trusting in video game journalism, I suppose? :P --DanielPharos (talk) 18:19, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Hm, in that case, should we just mention both name variations? IceWelder [] 08:46, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Definitely a good idea. Something like: "Codename Gordon (sometimes also called Codename: Gordon)"? --DanielPharos (talk) 14:40, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
This, but IMO without the 'also' for brevity. IceWelder [] 14:42, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

L4D reverted

Hello! You reverted my edit about developer who assisted with X360 version of the game. Its my second edit ever so i may not know all the rules. By “unsourced” you meant that i have to include link on a source to confirm my edit? If yes, this statement already sourced in the article itself in the “Development” section, third paragraph: “Certain Affinity assisted Turtle Rock Studios with the Xbox 360 version of the game.” This statement is sourced, #42 in references. I just edited developer section by adding info about assisted/ported developers like on other game pages. e.g. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Force_Unleashed developer’s note made in the same way without any links to the source. I will be very thankful to you if you explain what i am doing wrong. Because i am going to put a lot of such edits about developers who assisted/ported games to other platforms. Just what everything right from the start. Thanks for your time! Quadli (talk) 22:23, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

This is kind of random, but I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to review the article and being patient with me. I'm always glad to help, and I think that reviewer and author are equally responsible to get an article up to good quality. Additionally, putting editors under pressure by enforcing arbitrary deadlines would yield poorer results. Since keeping reviews open doesn't cost me anything, I am happy to do so as long as I know that a nomination has not been abandoned. IceWelder [] 08:59, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

About your work on the Crystal Dynamics article

This isn't a traditional talk page post, but I wanted to thank you for this! I was trying - and failing - to research the founders and serendipitously discovered the Lang typo which appears to have been copied everywhere on the internet, after correcting it you almost immediately started fixing the article and noticed other problems I didn't, such as Morse's name also being misspelled and Lange having left the company decades ago. You also added context for who these people even were and what they did. General good Wikipedia work, thanks for everything you do here. 51.37.34.199 (talk) 20:02, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

I actually was going to thank you for brining the incorrect founder names to my attention! I traced the incorrect names back to this edit from 2009 (13 years ago!), sourced to the MobyGames entry where they are similarly misspelled. I'm currently sifting through more old newspapers that give suprisingly many details on the company's early history. I will add a good portion of that in a larger edit fairly soon and plan to continue tomorrow. IceWelder [] 20:13, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Need help

Hi! 1) Was wondering do you see any way to access the press releases that were on Bethesda Softworks's old website [5]? I remembed they were avaible via The Free Library before but they are no longer there. Is there a press release archive somewhere you/I can check?

2) Do you see sources for Battlecry (video game) or Hockey League Simulator(1989)? I was thinking of creating that page for Battlecry and removing the redirect. Timur9008 (talk) 17:26, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

I think the press releases are lost to time. Been in the same place some time ago but couldn't find them anywhere, not even TFL.
The situation is similar with the two games; The best coverage of Hockey League Simulator I've found is a Radio Shack ad in a 1990 newspaper, so not very promising. BattleCry was never released as far as I know and cancelled less than two years after it was announced, so I highly doubt there being enough coverage for that. IceWelder [] 08:07, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for checking! Timur9008 (talk) 09:53, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
Here is what I was talking about. This one of the press releases that was on Bethesda's website that the TFL had but the URL wasn't saved.

It's a pity TFL removed them, but I do not know of any other source we could retrieve it from at this time. Have you tried contacting the site? IceWelder [] 22:55, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
Nope Timur9008 (talk) 08:41, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Do you know what this game is? (Storm) [6]. I think it's Echelon (video game) but I can't be sure. Timur9008 (talk) 14:33, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

According to MobyGames, it is indeed Echelon. Kind a hard to tell from the screenshot, though. IceWelder [] 11:41, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Was wondering can you update the main Bethesda Softworks article with info from this source [7]? It's all in Swedish though. If I'm reading this right Bethesda acquired another company back then (Visionary Design Technologies) Timur9008 (talk) 11:07, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

I don't know any Swedish, but from what I can gather via translation tools, this is indeed what it says. I also found this mag in Danish that claims the same. I will update the article when I find the time, but of course you may also feel free to do so. IceWelder [] 15:21, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

Removal of sportskeeda as a source

I have no issue at all about not using Sportskeeda as a reliable source. What seems wrong is simply removing the source and leaving nothing in its place. You should first attempt to find a better source and add it, and failing that, then you should add the {{fact}} tag at the end of the sentence. Just removing it and leaving nothing in its place is really not proper. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 18:55, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Yeah, I was still figuring out how to best deal with it and stopped after a few instances. I also noticed that it's 1,000+ affected articles, so I shouldn't do this by myself anyway. I will seek the appropriate route when I have the time. IceWelder [] 19:06, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
Any idea who was adding this source? Timur9008 (talk) 19:09, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
Since it appears frequently in Google searches, I wouldn't doubt that legitimate users added it in legitimate edits. However, I also frequently saw the site's writers spamming Wikipedia like here. At WP:RSN, it was downgraded to "generally unreliable" in 2021 for being a low-quality content farm. IceWelder [] 19:27, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
It's not like it's outrighted banned to use on Wikipedia. It has legitimate stories so it often looks like a good source to use. I'm sure I've used it in the past. I would even bet that items that were added with a sportskeeda source have a 99% chance of being sourceable and true, we just need a good replacement source when we remove sportskeeda. 1000+ hmmm? I'll help when I see them. Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:04, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
If you check the RSN discussion, they found that the site actively invites people to write for them to "promote your personal brand, and even earn you some money" and many of the commenters in the discussion actually sought for the site to be deprecated. Some stories might seem legitimate but are very likely to be written by someone with no journalistic experience, making them prone to errors. IceWelder [] 20:14, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
It looks like there are 100+ sportskeeda sources at tennis articles under "sportskeeda tennis." I'll try to focus on those. Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:19, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Removal of Fletcher as Bethesda co-founder

User:Indrian removed this info from the Weaver article and Bethesda Softworks article but wouldn't it be better to leave as note or something along those lines? Would love to hear your thoughts. Timur9008 (talk) 18:25, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

I think the edit summary sums it up pretty well, but here is the legal decision in which he is referred to as the founder. This is not the only source that lists him as a founder rather than a co-founder, but it is the most authoritative. Indrian (talk) 20:06, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
fair enough. Timur9008 (talk) 20:17, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
It should still be mentioned that he was key to the company's early success somewhere in the lede. The current lede is lacking (badly), so it's no surprise this bit is missing as well. IceWelder [] 22:57, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Advice about a developer name/Atari, Inc. to simply Atari on infoboxes

I'm having some confusion about Melbourne House's name, and I want to ask what would be better for infoboxes for the two titles they developed after the Atari rebranding (Transformers and Test Drive Unlimited PS2/PSP)

The full company name was "Atari Melbourne House Pty, Ltd." but then sources use both "Atari Melbourne House", "Melbourne House Studio" or simply "Melbourne House", but in your views what would you say is the proper name to describe them?

Another thing, it's to do with the Unreal 2 page, because I remember you reverting my edit back in February from "Infogrames" to "Infogrames, Inc." and now all of a sudden you've changed it back again, which is strange. How come? (I started adding them on because not every Infogrames/Atari title is copyrighted to the same subsidiary, though. Some are copyrighted to Infogrames Interactive/Atari Interactive (ex-Hasbro Interactive), others simply Infogrames/Atari (The European division's games). Luigitehplumber (talk) 21:23, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

The credits for the respective games seem to list the full name ("Infogrames Melbourne House"/"Atari Melbourne House") but if you find that sources overwhelmingly use "Melbourne House" (as it said on the logo at least during the Atari era), use that per WP:COMMONNAME.
As for Infogrames/Infogrames, Inc., I haven't fully made up my mind on this issue but for now wanted to create a consistent state. Thinking about it now, I found think that adding the legal suffix does not aid the reader in any way; not everyone would know that "Inc." is American and "SA" French, for example. Also, Atari SA is not a publisher, so there would be no ambiguity for "Atari" (outside of Atari Interactive) at a given time (only across times). IceWelder [] 22:53, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
I forgot to mention, but if one of the games solely copyrights Infogrames or Atari (eg, their original French titles), I sometimes just use Infogrames Europe/Atari Europe as they were based in France as well, but some titles are copyrighted to the Infogrames/Atari Europe company itself. Not every Infogrames/Atari title is published by the ex-GT subsidiary, so there it goes.

And then, as for the ex-MicroProse studios, the UK studio was listed as Infogrames Chippenham in the source I found, while the US studio was listed as Atari Interactive Hunt Valley Studio in the credits for Dungeons and Dragons Heroes, so that’s what I went with and it was copyrighted to Atari Interactive anyway.

I’m still working on the Atari SA subsidiaries page, but I’m taking a break on it. Luigitehplumber (talk) 03:57, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

"Infogrames Europe" and "Atari Europe" are most likely not correct as, in both cases, these are the overall HQs and neither company goes by such a name officially. For some studios, using the credits name might work but you should always check the sources as well. If this is a long-running issue, you should escalate it to a higher instance like the WPVG talk page. IceWelder [] 10:05, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, it’s quite understandable, but Infogrames/Atari have actually listed the publisher as such on PAL-region releases and on some European exclusive titles and I do suspect it’s because this division (I do believe) was formerly Infogrames Multimedia SA.
it’s very confusing that a single holding company went/goes by various different names.
Luigitehplumber (talk) 12:33, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
By the way, when are you able to help with that Atari page I created? Luigitehplumber (talk) 19:24, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
Essentially when I find the time. I currently don't have as much spare as I had hoped. IceWelder [] 06:37, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Okay. I'll continue with the page as is before. Luigitehplumber (talk) 19:09, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Rockstar Vienna

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello IceWelder,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.

If you want to know why I made these edits and made it less specific, it's not labeled as hack'n'slash and it only incorporates elements of a hack'n'slash game rather than being a traditional one since it goes by a one-hit rule for both the player and enemies. Request Edit help for Playrix article

Hi IceWelder. I’m reaching out because I saw you’ve worked on video game company pages in the past. I proposed a new update for the game developer Playrix on its Talk Page: Talk:Playrix#Russian operations update.. I have a COI, and can’t make edits. Are you able to take a look? Hello IceWelder. Someone seems to have added an advert tag to the Jim Bankoff page that we worked on together in a 'drive-by' manner, without any explanation or context. Would you mind taking a look to see if you agree that this tagging was unjustified? Tater graham at VM (talk) 23:58, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

I was originally going to suggest that you talk to the involved user directly but it turns out they were blocked indefinitely for sockpuppetry. While I think the tag could have just been removed because of this, I still amended the wording in some places and trimmed some not-as-necessary details to reduce the probability of this comeing up again. Note that I am not currently watching any articles related to Vox Media, so I will likely not catch bad changes immediately. IceWelder [] 18:00, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

Good call on the rephrase. But you are incorrect that "for undisclosed terms" is worng. Just take a look at a google result of the phrase in quotes to see that it is widely used and not incorrect English. oknazevad (talk) 23:23, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

Being widely used doesn't necessarily mean that it is correct. Apostrophe–s to indicate plurals and writing "formally" while meaning "formerly" are increasingly common but are obviously not right. Interestingly, the Google results I get for "for undisclosed terms" are mostly press releases, while those for "to undisclosed terms" contain far more news articles. As far as I know, "for" in this context always refers to the reciprocal, which the terms aren't. One way or the other, this wouldn't differ between English variants, and with the rephrase now in place, it won't be an issue for now. IceWelder [] 23:46, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

Original release date for various old games

Hi. I noticed you are reverting my edits that I have made yesterday (and some from the past month as well). I will now provide proof because I wasn't convincing enough.

First, we have Balls of Steel. It was in fact released on 12th December 1997, as even the ORIGINAL 3D Realms website says right here: https://legacy.3drealms.com/balls/ "Originally released December 12, 1997"

Second, we have Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold and Duke Nukem II which were both seemingly released on same day, on 3rd December 1993. While I don't believe that they were released on that day and instead they were released on 1st December 1993 according to their modified date of the files (I have the shareware versions of both to confirm), while looking on the 3D Realms website, it states that Blake Stone was released on 5th December 1993 instead, which means today is the game's anniversary. https://legacy.3drealms.com/blake/index.html "Originally released December 5, 1993." For second Duke Nukem game, it says the usual 3rd December 1993 date, so I am guessing this was actually intended (I will settle with 3rd December for now) and was a mix up with the day when Blake Stone released, so maybe the Blake Stone article should be the one that has to be edited. Additionally, for first Duke Nukem game, it should be noted that the second version (2.0) that changed the name to Duke Nukum, was released on 1st November 1991. I didn't check the page but this should be added if it's not there already.

Third, we have Rise of the Triad. While the initial shareware version 1.0 was indeed released on 21st December 1994, the first full registered version (1.2) was actually released on 15th February 1995. You can also see here on this website by downloading 1rott12.zip: https://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Rise_of_the_Triad%3A_The_HUNT_Begins.html The 1.2 patches correctly state 15th February but the date on the right side of the actual game still states 17th February because the website owner probably looked at the wikipedia article, despite the fact the files inside the zip are dated 15/02/1995. Again, please check for yourself if you don't believe me. I am just thinking at the upcoming ROTT remaster and it's being planned to be released sometime in mid February 2023 as well but they aren't fully decided when exactly and I hope this date won't influence their release.

Fourth, we have Doom. While many websites claim that The Ultimate Doom was released on 30th April 1995, this is false because the actual game released on 25th May 1995. I have the original Ultimate Doom as part of the ID Anthology package and the files are dated 25/05/1995. This is a strange rare case where the game was seemingly released a month before it was finished, as if the developers were time traveling or something. I am aware there exist tools to edit the files' dates but I just find this weird and this should be asked on Doomworld forums or whatever, maybe other people know better than me.

Fifth, we have Strife. What I have added was based on the shareware versions' dates and the registered versions, as I have the original Strife CD to confirm. The initial 1.1 registered release has the timestamps of 18/04/1996 (fun fact: a day before registered Duke3D came out) for both the EXE and WAD file, while the second edition of the CD (which I have currently, version 1.2 of the game) is from May 1996. I believe that the initial registered release came out in April 1996 (around same time Duke3D came out) and the second edition released in May 1996. I still don't understand why was the shareware taken out, you can check for yourself here if you don't believe me: https://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames/roguestuff/ https://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Strife.html Acquiring a retail Strife CD may be difficult nowadays but I can take proof of my CD if this is needed. I would appreciate at least if the date of shareware versions gets added in the meantime.

Sixth, we have Duke Nukem 3D. As far as I know, the current dates are all correct and I wanted to complete the missing European release date, instead of being vaguely referred as May 1996. I don't have any source for that (I only have the US releases of full and atomic versions and can confirm they are all correct) but I know the EU version was released sometime in early May, I just checked the website redump.org to see the date and that's what I added as basis. In the meantime, I will provide proof for the Penthouse Paradise addon which was released in early May 1997: https://web.archive.org/web/19980218070709/http://www.pcgamer.com/news/news-1997-04-28.html Look for the "Dirty Duke" part of the article. I will continue looking for the exact dates of the addons/expansions in the near future. Additionally, this guide to install Duke Nukem 3D Plutonium Pak/Atomic Edition mentions the exact dates of the Duke3D retail versions, so this can be added as a proof (example the readme file that mentions the 11th December 1996 date for Duke3D v1.5) https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Duke_Nukem_3D/DOSBox_Plutonium_Pak_V1.4_and_V1.5_Patch_Installation

Seventh, we have Quake. The initial shareware version (0.91) was indeed released on 22nd June 1996 but the full registered version (1.01) was released on 12th July 1996. The game indeed started shipping to customers on 22nd July 1996 but the actual game released on 12th July. Technically, 1.00 came out on 11th July and then the bug-fixed 1.01 came the next day and that was the basis for the full version as well. The next version of the game, which was 1.06 (both shareware and registered), released on 1st October 1996. Version 1.07 (used for the first mission pack, Scourge of Armagon) was released on 11th February 1997. Version 1.08 (final DOS version, used for the second mission pack, Dissolution of Eternity) was released on 11th March 1997. And then version 1.09 (WinQuake) was released on 22th March 1997. I have ALL versions of the game and expansions (physical CD copies and also the remastered version on Steam) and can confirm all of this. In fact, I can go ahead and also make a list of the official addons released for the remaster because this isn't covered here at all. I am talking about the curated addons that get occasionally added to the remaster.

And finally, various websites mention the 12th July date for the original registered version, I'm not making this up, you can read on the following links: https://quake.fandom.com/wiki/Quake https://quake.fandom.com/wiki/Quake_Version_History https://github.com/Jason2Brownlee/QuakeOfficialArchive

Eighth, we have Powerslave. The demo versions can be downloaded at the following link: https://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/powerslave The initial two-level beta demo released on 12th January 1996, while the final four-level demo version released on 12th December 1996. I don't have the registered version to check but I am pretty sure it released around same time. I think the 12th December 1996 is a valid date. There is another even earlier beta demo that was released a couple months earlier (sometime during late 1995) https://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/powerslave-official-beta I am not sure if it should be mentioned in the article but the two demo versions above should be mentioned at least.

Ninth, we have Shadow Warrior. The game initially released on 13th May 1997 (Shareware Version 1.0) and the full game (Registered Version 1.2) was completed and released on 25th August 1997, as proof shows right here: https://web.archive.org/web/19980218070526/http://www.pcgamer.com/news/news-1997-08-25.html I forgot to edit the Shadow Warrior page yesterday but I know that my previous edit was reverted and was told to provide proof, so I hope this is enough for now.

I am sorry if my edits were suspicious previously, I hope this message clears out confusion for the release dates of the games. 86.127.19.243 (talk) 09:25, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

File dates have no meaning, as games do not need to be released on the same day they are compiled. In some cases, you replaced sourced dates with file dates. This also falls under original research.
If you have documented proof of a release date, please add that source to the article instead of changing dates without a source. IceWelder [] 09:47, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
That's true, there are many games that get released at a later time after they are finished, such as some of those shareware Apogee games releasing two days later after being finished. It still doesn't explain how in Ultimate Doom's case, it was released a month before it was even finished. I will only change the date for Balls of Steel, Blake Stone and Shadow Warrior for now and I will add a note after I figure out how to do so. For the rest rejected changes, I will try to research further, I just need to find more archived pages with Wayback Machine to show as proof. I hope this should be enough proof (3D Realms' original website) to justify my recent changes for those articles. Thanks. 86.127.19.243 (talk) 07:37, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Do you see any sources for this article? Timur9008 (talk) 12:09, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

There are a few hits in the Internet Archive, including this 2-page spread. Might be worth checking out. Obviously, most of the sources are going to be in French. IceWelder [] 12:20, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Teardown (video game)

On 10 December 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Teardown (video game), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Teardown was not traditionally marketed because of the popularity it gained through Twitter? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Teardown (video game). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Teardown (video game)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Blood Interactive

Hello there!

I found an earlier source about Super Galaxy Squadron. Unfortunately, it's a Kickstarter post, and English Wikipedia banned Kickstarter links for some reason, so I couldn't use it as citation. The post is called Update #4, and it's on the Updates tab of the KS page of the game.

Some dates are also off, for example Dusk was announced in 2016 at PAX West, so David Szymanski didn't pitch it in 2017; and SGS (original version) was released in January 2015, according to this tweet: https://twitter.com/NewBlood/status/558685951287775233 WolfmanFP (talk) 15:07, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

I checked again and the magazine does state that Oshry met Clinkscales in 2016 and Szymanski in 2017. But you are right that there seems to be a discrepancy here. I rephrased those parts for now but if we can find some more reliable sources from around the time of the games' releases, we should be able to put together a better prose text.
