Hello @Ahunt:. Thanks for the welcome. I see you are interested in military affairs and in lists. One page at which I happened to look is UAVs in the Iranian military. Surprisingly few Iranian UAVs have their own wiki page, and Category:Unmanned military aircraft of Iran appears to intersect with Category:Unmanned aerial vehicles of Iran. Can I count on your help? Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Russian Air Force, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Andrey Yudin. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

@General Ization: Please indicate the change with the diff code so that I may learn. Otherwise, your instructions are almost worthless. Herreshoffian (talk) 01:48, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what you mean by "the diff code". If you are suggesting you were unclear which edit of yours I was objecting to, it was the only one I reverted, at which time you would have immediately received a notification with a link to the reversion. My instruction to you was to follow our policies and include citations of reliable sources with your edits. General Ization Talk 02:07, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@General Ization: Oh that was just a copy from KraussMaffei. Since it was a copy of material found elsewhere on wiki not written by me, and since I presumed you would already have cleaned up any unreferenced and objectionable content, I disclaim any error. If you want to have a defective Siemens AG page, by all means take full responsibility for that reversion. Herreshoffian (talk) 02:21, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you copy content from another Wikipedia page, you must also copy the cited sources that support that content. You should not presume that others will do that for you, because it is your responsibility. General Ization Talk 02:24, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation pages

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions so far. I hope you like the place and decide to stay.

Disambiguation pages

[edit]

Please note that disambiguation pages like Saint George (disambiguation) are meant to help readers find a specific existing article quickly and easily. For that reason, they have guidelines that are different from articles. From the Wikipedia:Disambiguation dos and don'ts you should:

  • Only list articles that readers might reasonably be looking for
  • Use short sentence fragment descriptions, with no punctuation at the end
  • Use exactly one navigable link ("blue link") in each entry that mentions the title being disambiguated
  • Only add a "red link" if used in existing articles, and include a "blue link" to an appropriate article
  • Do not pipe links (unless style requires it) – keep the full title of the article visible
  • Do not insert external links or references - Wikipedia is not a business directory

Disambiguation pages are supposed to lead readers to existing content - there is no point in sending them to a page that doesn't mention the title they're looking for. Leschnei (talk) 13:03, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for adding the link for Georgii Pobedonosets. I have edited the entry per MOS:DAB - one blue link per entry and no references (the references should go in the article). Leschnei (talk) 22:49, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Iceland Crisis Response Unit into List of equipment of the Iceland Crisis Response Unit. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. An article you recently created, List of equipment of the Slovenian Army, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Boleyn (talk) 17:01, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Boleyn: do you mean to question the existence of the Slovenian army? I'm not sure how this deletion enhances wiki. Surely there is a little leeway for lists like these, or do you propose to weed out most of these contributions on the basis of a procrustean rule? Herreshoffian (talk) 19:48, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, it just needs to be clear where you have got your information from, with sourc(s) listed. If you add the sources, preferably with inlnie citations, it will be fine for the mainspace. I can't agree that showing where the information comes from in a new encyclopadia article isn't important. Hopefully it can be easily fixed. Thanks for your work on it, Boleyn (talk) 14:29, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi . You added the short form ref "Saint & June 1988" to Crosbie E. Saint, but haven't added the required cite that completes the reference. Could you add the cite detail what work this refers to, or let me know what the work is and I'll add it for you. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 12:50, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @ActivelyDisinterested: It's the June 1988 article in selected pubs. I don't know how to get sfn to work right. Herreshoffian (talk) 14:52, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've created the cite here, and corrected the {{sfn}} template to link correctly. The templates only work with full cites, they won't link with text. They can be tricky to get setup correctly, if you have any questions just ask. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 15:09, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @ActivelyDisinterested: great work! :) I added the second author too finally. Would you mind helping with the rest? The July and October 1988 need the same second author, and it would be nice to see the others under control. Are you particularly interested in US military, or just don't like to see sfn errors generally? Herreshoffian (talk) 18:52, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've created similar cites for the other articles. I mostly deal with Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors, a year and 20k+ edits and I've nearly cleared 'D'. But I also deal with any other referencing issue, and article conversions upon request. I'm currently standardising the refs at Christianization, which I expect to keep me busy for awhile. If you have any referencing problems drop me a note on my talk page. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 19:48, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive copying

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Ante Gotovina into another page. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

This edit was a copy&paste that didn't bring in the ref tags, except for one that seemed to reference a blog post. This was also below the standard of B class, which Independence of Croatia is classified at. Likewise, this added overly detailed information that isn't really relevant there. Please be more careful in the future. --Joy (talk) 15:53, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Joy: I'm curious about your use of language. What about this edit where I say "reword copy para from Ante Gotovina" (with wiki link!) made you say "It appears that you copied or moved text"? Frankly, I'm stunned. Is English not your first language? It is very difficult to read past this text because it is such a blatant misrepresentation of the facts. Please be more careful in future. Herreshoffian (talk) 17:27, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's part of the automated template, sorry about not adjusting the generic part. No need to be condescending, though. --Joy (talk) 20:09, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I noticed that you wrote The material I found airbrushed history to the point of burying it. The copy paste material supplied by wiki is incontrovertible and needs no reference beyond what is on the linked pages therefore I have removed the impugned reference as unfit for a B class article and supplied a BBC timeline instead.
I'm afraid this is the wrong way to approach editing on Wikipedia. There is nothing buried by not extending the aftermath section of the article about independence of Croatia into rehashing the entirety of the linked article about the Croatian War of Independence etc. Likewise, saying that something needs no reference is not appropriate, esp. on a B-class article. The information about Martić, Gotovina, etc can likewise be found through the articles that are already linked. Please don't engage in a pointless edit war - you made a bold edit, it was reverted, it's your turn to use the fine talk page there instead. --Joy (talk) 20:14, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Joy: I'm happy to engage on the talk page of the article in question. I wonder if you are too near the topic for objectivity. Your contention that "Likewise, saying that something needs no reference is not appropriate, esp. on a B-class article." makes no sense. For example, take the B-class article Venn diagram. Why would we need to substantiate with footnotes any of the information in the first two paragraphs? For example we take for granted that John Venn was born in 1834 and died in 1923 and we can look at his page if we need to find reference for his biographical data. It appears as though you wish to overturn accepted practice on all of wikipedia in order to serve your own ends and this poses some difficulty. Image captions

[edit]

You need to find an actual WP:RS to add the information you're trying to insert. It should not be hard to track something down. Image captions are frequently wrong (I have seen plenty of instances over the years, and in fact I have contacted NHHC to have some of them corrected). You cannot take for granted that just because an image was filed with a given caption that the photo depicts what the caption says it does. Parsecboy (talk) 14:41, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You need to provide a written source that states what you want to say. You cannot simply look at two pictures and decide what you think they mean. That is synthesis and is not permitted on Wikipedia. If this information is as obvious as you think, you should have no problem finding a book that states as much. If you continue to edit-war, you'll be blocked from editing. Parsecboy (talk) 23:17, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Parsecboy: you must be an enlisted man. Idle threats that make no sense bore everyone. Unlike you, I read the caption. Herreshoffian (talk) 23:25, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Could I please inquire into the reasons behind your moving and subsequent blanking of this page? If you would like to have it deleted see WP:RFD or WP:CSD. I recommend you review those. Silikonz💬 20:51, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Silikonz: I created the page today before I realized that it was a better home for Vostochny Port (company) (VPC). Then I tried to move VPC to JSCVP only to find that the "move page" button prevented me. At that point I just gave up. Now I see I ought to have just copy+pasted from one to the other. Does that help? Herreshoffian (talk) 21:41, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If the move button prevented you you should have followed the instructions on the form, which were to post to WP:RM or WP:RMT. Blanking is not the same thing as deletion.
Copy-pasting moves are strongly discouraged because they require a history merge to fix attribution issues. Please read basic moving procedure before you perform further actions in this regard. Moving pages to (TBD) to 'queue' deletion is not remotely helpful.
I have now reverted the move and tagged the (TBD) page under WP:CSD#R3. Silikonz💬 22:00, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on JSC Vostochny Port (TBD) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Mass changes

[edit]

Hi, I see you are making major changes to Private military company, which I'm sure is to the benefit of the article, but when undertaking such an initiative, may I suggest that you perhaps copy the page to your sandbox, make all the changes there, then copy it back to the article? That way you're not blowing up the the page history, as well as anyone's watchlists that happen to be watching the page, with some 75 consecutive edits (today alone, and possibly still counting?). I note that you've already been notified of the preview function just above, which also discusses these issues. An article you recently created, Shanghai Petroleum and Natural Gas Exchange, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 10:55, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Onel5969: thanks for this note. I am somewhat disappointed that, while you write here on this talk page that the article "should have at least three, to be safe", nowhere on the {{notability|date=April 2023}} makes mention of number of references. That's why I limited myself to two good references. I can understand the need to maintain quality and quantity, and likely will comply soon. It would be nice to have the number three mentioned in the notability tag text so as to remove the need for this here dialogue if you think your requirement will pass consensus muster. Herreshoffian (talk) 13:07, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. The issue was that neither of those two sources was truly in-depth about the organization. The first was just a brief mention of the organization in relation to an LNG trade deal, as was the second. In addition, the second is what is known as churnalism, and is just information regurgitated from a press release by the organization. Hope this helps. Hello Herreshoffian. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Fu Cong, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Herreshoffian. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Herreshoffian|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Amigao (talk) 17:01, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Of course not. I'm surprised you feel that way. What would make you say that, @Amigao:, maybe the fact that previously I asked that question of you? Herreshoffian (talk) 06:43, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Novator 91R requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.globalmil.com/military/missile_force/russia/Cruise_Missile/2022/0422/740.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

Onel5969 TT me 13:36, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Onel5969: It's good that you noticed this copyright infringement. Can we discover who was the culprit? See where I lifted it from Kalibr (missile family) here, and was not my work. I'm dismayed that User:Hadal acted so hastily in deleting Novator 91R. In addition to the impugned material, which was copy-pasted directly as above, there were many references that were found by me, and at least four images that were again found by me. I would like access to my work, none of which was in violation. Can anything be done to fix this matter? Herreshoffian (talk) 16:16, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So there's several issues here:
  • It seems the text was copied vertabim from elsewhere. I don't know who did it, but by creating another aticle you are essentially propagating that problem. (It's possible the text was originally on Wikipedia and copied by the external source, but this is not immediately evident.)
  • If you copied the text from the existing article at Kalibr (missile family), even if it was not a copyright violation, you technically infringed on the Wikipedia:GFDL. You should have credited the original authors from the Kalibr article in your edit summary. In other words, you should have determined who contribued this text to begin with. Otherwise you've essentially done a copy/paste move (bad).
  • Regardless of the above, it is not evident that the article you created would have stood on its own-- in other words, even if it were not a copyright violation it could have been deleted under CSD:A10.
I suggest you recreate your article, writing in your own words, as a draft first. Despite what you said on my talk page, I did not see any references in the deleted article. The following images were in the article, but these were not created by you:
File:91RTE2 maquette maks2009.jpg
File:91RE1 submarine launched anti-submarine missile from Kalibr-PLE-Club-S system 01.jpg
File:91RE1 submarine launched anti-submarine missile from Kalibr-PLE-Club-S system 02.jpg
Otherwise, there does not appear to be anything else to retrieve? --Hadal (talk) 16:32, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: I will point out that you have already been warned several times about Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia, and that you appear to do this often. I caution you that continuing to violate copyright, and editing in a disruptive manner will result in a block from editing. --Hadal (talk) 16:36, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Hadal:. Thanks for your reply. I am unable to see the text in question and hence am unable to debate you on the merits of the case. If you will kindly copy over to my draftspace the article in question (without the offending text) I will attempt to remedy the situation both for this article and in future.

I thought I had added a number of references in the lede. Maybe I'm thinking of a different article. Is it really that difficult to restore the article without the copyright violation and then to notify me and give the community a week to fix the remaining issues?

As to your addendum, I am sorry if I don't understand the policy. I would need to see my edit notes on Novator 91R to be able to retrace my steps and fix the problem. I doubt very much that I "appear to do this often". Can you substantiate your claim please? As with the previous instance if I can't see my error, I am unlikely to be able to fix my error. Your caution seems to be worded unfriendly and I find it distasteful. Herreshoffian (talk) 17:11, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I recreated the article, sans copyvio content, here: User:Herreshoffian/Novator 91R. I regenerated the reflist -- the original history didn't show the refs, so I apologize for that discrepancy. That said, as you can see there is very little left to the article. There would need to be substantial improvement/expansion for this article to avoid deletion per CSD:A10.
Re: my caution to you: I'm sorry you feel that way. You have been warned several times by other users, including for "excessive copying" (by Joy on Jan 31 2023), as evinced by your own talk page here. You were warned several times prior to and after Jan 2023. Copyright and attribution are important aspects of the Wikipedia project that we take very seriously. It would be helpful to make sure you are fully aware of these editing policies when contributing in future. Disregarding other users' warnings is considered disruptive editing. I believe you have been given ample warning, so please take great care going forward. --Hadal (talk) 19:43, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Diff/1152607766: what did you mean with "the removal claim is spurious"? If you were referring to my edits, they did not remove anything, they added {{Better source needed}} tags. Sources are typically preferred in text form, so if there is any such adequate replacement, the video should be replaced with that. I tagged it with {{Full citation needed}} requesting the quote and timestamp (trans-quote with a translation of the quote to English should be preferably inserted too). You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for contravening Wikipedia's harassment policy.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text at the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Acroterion (talk) 02:26, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please explain why you thought it was a good idea to reinstate outing and harassment of another editor? I've indefinitely blocked someone else who appears to have encouraged that campaign of abuse, and your reinstatement of the IP's abuse is profoundly troubling. This block is indefinite in the literal sense. Any appeal must address your conduct. The only acceptable action would be to report the attempts to out another editor, or if you have good and substantial reason for suspicion, to privately provide evidence directly to the Arbitration Committee, not to put it back. Acroterion (talk) 02:32, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Herreshoffian (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I am puzzled. In fact, I'm agog. I have not harassed anyone nor have I "outed" anyone. It appears that Acroterion refer to -->the IP's<-- posting of words on my page. Is it or is it not my talk page? My page is so far off the main stream. It's a backwater. Why the fuss? It's literally incomprehensible to me. "The only acceptable action" presumes I've been across this bridge before, which I haven't. I just edit. Just let me be. Herreshoffian (talk) 05:05, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

It is not "your talk page" in that you own and control it completely. It is "yours" in that Wikipedia permits you to have an area for communication with you. You do not have the latitude to restore and endorse outing to this page. This page isn't as far off the mainstream as you think. 331dot (talk) 08:22, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Read WP:OUTING. You may not use WIkipedia to play guessing games about people in real life like that. Another editor correctly redacted the wholly inappropriate speculation from your talkpage, and you not only put it back, you complained about it and agreed with the IP's harassment and outing.
