East Riding of Yorkshire

Just to let you know I have removed the {{underconstruction}} template for now as you are away. Keith D (talk) 13:14, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for tackling this one. Suggest under Services that Driffield, Hornsea, Withernsea, Beverley & Bridlington hospitals be noted, do not know if they come under the same trust. May be worth checking the place articles to see if the hospital is mentioned and if not add as appropriate. Keith D (talk) 14:35, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
I have not spotted Derwent Arms yet, still catching up - up to yesterday's changes. Have you spotted the prod of Teddy's Nook, AFD on Yellow arch studios or the copyright violation on Bowcliffe Hall? Keith D (talk) 14:57, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Just had a thought on sport - what about golf courses? There is one in Bridlington & another in Coniston/Gansted. I think there is also one in Sutton-on-Hull but it may be just a practice range. Keith D (talk) 19:28, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
What do you think about changing the Sport section to Sport and leisure which is allowed in WP:UKCITIES (I know as I have just corrected that page} and including the long distance footpaths into it. There is the Trans Pennine Trail (which finishes as the Hornsea Rail Trail) and the Yorkshire Wolds Way that would be useful. Keith D (talk) 21:43, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
The category is probably about 97% complete as I went through the East Riding Council gazetteer and created all of the stub articles when I first started on wiki. May be I was too enthusiastic and created subs for small obscure places but they are all there. There are even places missed out of the gazetteer which have articles though there are no entries for areas in Hull apart from a couple that others have created. Keith D (talk) 22:02, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Drat you did not spot the note on WP:UKGEO that the 2008 population stats are now available here. Keith D (talk) 21:53, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I have just removed this chunk of text from Kingston upon Hull article. It is probably more suitable for the East Riding of Yorkshire article or the History of the East Riding of Yorkshire article so just in case you can use it. The Ferriby Boats article may also be a suitable place for some of the information. Pitty it is all unreferenced. Keith D (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

I found a couple of refs but both look a bit iffy for copy violation 1 2. What do you think?--Harkey (talk) 15:15, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

The first reference looks OK for the boats article, and possibly the East Riding one, may be could link in the boats article by mentioning it in the East Riding history section. I am not sure about the second reference as it looks like some sort of forum, so may be should skip that one. Keith D (talk) 16:48, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Richmondshire

Hi, I was wondering your plans on Richmondshire for the new list that was added under the references section. Are you intending to make them into references for bits of the text or are they remaining as a sort of further reading type section? My guess is that the former is preferable for most of the entries. Keith D (talk) 15:40, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the update. I agree it will probably better to comment them out for now and then work them in as you add text. Keith D (talk) 16:35, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I had a look at the refs that you added to the article and was slightly perturbed to see that ref 3, which takes us to here leads to the stuff that was incompetently pasted wholesale, by User:82.8.5.12 - who has edited a rather, er, eclectic collection of topics - into the article, and which was subsequently (to an extent) cleaned up by me. Surely this, even after my cleanup, is a copyvio? Best. --GuillaumeTell 16:01, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Newsletter

Any thoughts for a feature for this month? I will be away from Friday so will not be here for delivery. Keith D (talk) 00:20, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

That may be a good idea, I should be in Hornsea, Brid and Scarborough during the week. If you want to draft something, may be we could encourage people to work on these articles as a break from their usual activities. We have Category:Coastal settlements in North Yorkshire and Category:Coastal settlements in the East Riding of Yorkshire that were recently created. Though we seem to get little response from people, have another difficult user now trying to call Calderdale a unitary authority and West Yorkshire a ceremonial county! Another copyvio

Hi, there is another article tagged as copyvio New Hall (HM Prison) if you want to have a look. Keith D (talk) 10:25, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

French?

Hi, just wondered if you are able to translate from French? The Brontë article on the French wiki is now at FA and is miles better than the short one we have here and just wondering if we could pinch (sorry legally reuse) most of it. Keith D (talk) 10:22, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

I can read the article , but I doubt that my translation would catch the nuances of meaning. There is a lot of very solid information, though. Maybe we could ask on the WP:YORKS talk page if anyone can translate it.--Harkey (talk) 10:48, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Thank, I will try on the project page but we do not seem to get much response on there. Keith D (talk) 11:24, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Signpost: 21 September 2009

Hi, when you create a page like this, please don't forget to make a hatnote, or create a dab page or whatever is appropriate, so that anyone typing in "Treasurer's House" gets led to this article - I've added a hatnote at Treasurer's House, but until then there was no way to get from Somerset to York! Cheers, PamD (talk) 22:22, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Peer reviews

Hi, I was thinking that may be we should push on with Kingston upon Hull and York articles towards FA and have a preliminary peer review on them. What do you think? I know there is some referencing that needs splitting and a problem over some detail on archbishop I raised on the talk page for Hull. For York there is talk of possible splitting but we can cross those later. Keith D (talk) 09:28, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

The archbishop was a bit that I put in. I found it on a site that has since changed, and I'm not sure how reliable it was in the first place. I have tried to find the name in lists of archbishops but to no avail. As winter is coming on, I shall have a lot more time to edit, so it is a good time to try improving some of the articles. Anne Bronte is still out in the cold, as well. We could try to get her some recognition. I think I remember buying a book about her in a charity shop just before Christmas. (I think I could write a presentable article about the charity shops of North and East Yorkshire!! :-)) --- I've just had a look for the book on Anne Bronte and yes, I did buy it--Harkey (talk) 09:52, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
I think Anne is probably the best article of the set on the family, may be if the translation happens on the family article we could get some detail from there as well. It would be a useful featured topic but that would take a lot of work. Not got much experience of FA process, only dipped in occasionally when there is an FAC or FAR of relevance, so not sure what is really expected there. By the way there is a good second-hand book shop in Beverley! Keith D (talk) 10:53, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

An before h?

You are wrong to say that "an" is correct before words starting with "h" although it sometimes is.

we say 'an hour' 'an heir, 'an honour' but not 'an house' or 'an hat' or 'an historic'.Knight in black satin (talk) 13:20, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Anne Bronte

You may want to check out this change that happened a couple of weeks ago as it puts it out of step with the Haworth article which says it is a village. Keith D (talk) 23:01, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Couple of jobs

Hi, if you are free and want something to do then there is St George's Hall, Bradford which has a copyvio on it and may be Name of Yorkshire can be cracked by putting something in Yorkshire to cover this off then we can get rid of it as per its talk page. Keith D (talk) 00:51, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't hold out much hope for Name of Yorkshire in the Yorkshire article. To get it right and in the right place would mean intruding into the history section at a place where its not all that bad. I'll have a go at St George's Hall, Bradford, though, if no-one else has done it by tomorrow.--Harkey (talk) 19:25, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Looks like some one is playing with the St George's Hall, Bradford article as it has popped into watchlist. The Yorkshire one needs some section adding on the origin of the name which is missing at the moment and may be why the new user created the other article. Keith D (talk) 22:20, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Great, someone has done St George's Hall, Bradford. The idea seems to be to rejig the copyviolation articles to be as short as acceptably possible then add back the info (not the text) later. I moved the text from Name of Yorkshire to Yorkshire#Toponomy so it will not be lost if/when the article is deleted.--Harkey (talk) 08:16, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I have redirected to page to the new section that you created. Will just need some references when we get round to tackling the Yorkshire article. Keith D (talk) 10:52, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

C.Hodgson Fowler

Hi. Fowler's name is very familiar to me, but I couldn't remember why. Google tells me that his dates are 1840-1910. I've looked at the most relevant of my architectural books (including lots of Pevsners), but there isn't much by way of biography. What I've discovered is: he was from Durham, was a pupil of George Gilbert Scott, built quite a few churches in County Durham (e.g. St Paul, West Hartlepool), Yorkshire, Lincs and Notts, did lots of restorations, was Durham Cathedral's architectural consultant (or something like that). Anyway, St Andrew's Church at Bishopthorpe is one of his, so that's probably why his name rings a bell. He should be in the DNB. There's a book about him - details here. I could quite easily knock up a stub for him - what do you think? Best. --GuillaumeTell 00:15, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

See C. Hodgson Fowler! I'll add some more churches and refs in due course. --GuillaumeTell 17:50, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Wath

Hi, I was adding Category:Civil parishes in North Yorkshire to articles and stumbled across Wath. On the dab page Wath there are 3 plain Waths in North Yorkshire the Ryedale one does not exist as yet. But the problem is the 2 in Harrogate district one is currently at Wath, Harrogate and the other at Wath, North Yorkshire. I have remove the civil parish note from the text of the one that is not a civil parish but we need a better dab for these two. Do you know if there is any local way of distinguishing between the places or have you any suggestions for how we could distinguish between them? Keith D (talk) 10:53, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

The Harrogate one is sometimes called "Wath in Nidderdale" as here to distinguish it from the other. There is not a lot online about the Ryedale one, it's a really tiny part of the Hovingham ward.--Harkey (talk) 12:22, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, looks like I will have to go round changing the dabs & move the pages. Keith D (talk)

Wind farms

I had a thought on this last night when I went to bed. May be we should add something about wind farms to the East Riding of Yorkshire article as it is a hot topic at the moment with the government inspector overruling the planning refusals from the council. There is the wind farm at Out Newton and the new one that has just been built near Lissett that could be mentioned. Keith D (talk) 11:44, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I was also trying to remember whether there were any power stations in the East Riding. None come to mind.--Harkey (talk) 12:17, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Try Salt End they have upgraded the power lines to take the extra power generated from there. There is also talk of an incinerator to burn waste from Hull & East Riding to add to the power output from the area. Keith D (talk) 12:54, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
If you are thinking about adding a section on power then there is the new experimental generator on the Humber that uses tidal power to generate electricity, there was something about it on the BBC and Hull Daily Mail earlier in the year. Keith D (talk) 18:12, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
I was thinking about a section on Renewable energy after I found this and now you've found tidal power as well. We have to keep ahead of the game up here, you know. --Harkey (talk) 21:57, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
I have located this and this on the tidal trial scheme. Keith D (talk) 22:20, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Just found this. I think its a runner.--Harkey (talk) 22:28, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Not what I was looking for but there is also this proposal. Keith D (talk) 15:04, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, that's another good one to use. I've been doing a lot of reading around associated topics today, as well as trying to tie up some Wiki loose ends. I suppose you could call it a "Wikitidy". My desk and computer files were bursting at the seams with unfiled relevant/irrelevant information and scribbled little notes. I couldn't see the wood for the trees. I now feel a bit more efficient and a lot more virtuous. (Don't worry, it won't last long!)--Harkey (talk) 15:36, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

References

On East Riding of Yorkshire there is a problem with references 2, 20 & 28, I think I have fixed the rest of the problem links. Could be just a glitch in the web sites but I think the Hull Daily Mail one will need to go back to the paper copy as it is before the archives I can find. Keith D (talk) 23:08, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Repaced 2 & 20. 28 was OK.--Harkey (talk) 08:37, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

As you are still around can you look at Lacustrine that you have linked in the East Riding of Yorkshire article as it goes to a dab page. Keith D (talk) 21:05, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Go on then, I'll bite:

Hi Harkey. As I am stalking Keith D (I can't remember why but I'm sure there was a good reason once) I saw you commenting that you're off to Northumberland. Being (a) obsessed and (b) a bit obsessed (see [a]) I cannot let that pass without wishing you a great week in that finest of counties, and nosily asking where in it you will be lucky enough to be?! "My" bit (ahem) is centred on Embleton. Cheers, DBaK (talk) 07:19, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Sykes churches

Hi. Nice tables and pictures. Hope you don't mind my fiddling a bit with the text (with the aid of my trusty York and E Riding Pevsner) in between boggling at the goings-on at Talk:Leeds. Must get out Sledmere way some time, possibly via the Pipe and Glass at South Dalton. --GuillaumeTell 17:15, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the improvements. Your edit summaries keep me smiling!! Keep going.--Harkey (talk) 17:21, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Leeds Town Hall thingy

It's a tower. But maybe that's not what you meant. The tower consists of a square colonnade, an elongated lead-covered dome with concave sides, and a cupola on top.

Yes, I'll have a go at some alt text, probably tomorrow, though Philip Larkin is looming up again and I've various opera-related things on the go, as well as real life. So much to do, so little time! I seem to have spent hours on Tower Works this p.m. --GuillaumeTell 19:06, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, I put in some alt text for the images in the infobox but nothing is showing. All help gratefully received, including comments on my text. --GuillaumeTell 17:49, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the help, though the alt text for the shield was displayed when the cursor was over the Town Hall pic. I've fixed that, and the alt text now appears correctly for the TH and the shield - but not for the map! You can see that I don't have much expertise in this area, but I'm always willing to learn. Glad to know that the text is OK. I'll get on to the rest of the pix later this pm. Am I right in assuming that Speaker Icon.svg (the .ogg file) doesn't need alt text? --GuillaumeTell 19:02, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the thanks - only 11 more to go! In a way, I'm rather enjoying doing it - it forces me to look hard at the pictures - but whether anyone will ever benefit from it is another matter. Still, ours not to reason why. --GuillaumeTell 19:14, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
I've now done all the alt text for the Leeds images (except the flags at the bottom) (oh and the pic of John Smeaton, see Talk:Leeds#Notable_people - will do it if/when the image is definitely staying on the page). Perhaps you'd like to check through them for errors, grammar, etc. when you get back from your 48 hrs off. Best. --GuillaumeTell 18:58, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, I lived in Leeds from 1971 to 2004, so most of this wasn't new to me - but it's amazing what one sees when trying to describe a picture to someone who can't see it. I had to resist the temptation to identify streets, background buildings and so on. I might add a few things to the Peer Review, as I haven't contributed much to the actual article (except a bit of correcting grammar and whatnot). ----GuillaumeTell 19:08, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Infoxbox leeds

well done, if I was you I would remove all but one or two of those citations supporting the nicknames, there is just no need for them all (imo) Off2riorob (talk) 18:51, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Future newsletter topic

Just a thought for a future newsletter topic and focus for a month, probably in the new year, would be to improve the Parliamentary Constituency articles and the various MP articles. Especially relevant with the general election on the horizon and these articles will get more hits around that time. I have just tagged the MPs and raised their importance to High. May be could lump in the MEPs and see if we can get some photos for those MP/MEPs missing images. Keith D (talk) 22:56, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I missed this when it was first posted. Probably a daft question but, do we have lists?--Harkey (talk) 17:05, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Harkey, I did not change facts etc on the Marton article YOU did: please leave it alone. Everything I have put in is cited and true, supported by verifiable facts and newspaper articles. I stand by it: leave it alone unless you want to carry on changing it forever! Amhunt84 (talk) 19:05, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

is your collaboration with keith d a way of avoiding the 3 edit rule Harkey? so you 2 take it in turns to try to bully me off a page ? Pathetic mate: small minded and pathetic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amhunt84 (talkcontribs) 21:37, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

I have a Watchlist of recently changed articles, which I monitor for inappropriate additions, which might bring Wikipedia into disrepute. The additions to the article were originally uncited and appeared to me to be local gossip, then, when I tried to help by adding a citation and toning down the contentious edits my work was reverted. I have not collaborated with anybody about this. --Harkey (talk) 22:24, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Weather box

Just spotted that you had added the High Mowthorpe weatherbox to the Pickering article and made me think that we do not have an article on High Mowthorpe to link to. May be we need an article or a redirect for the place so that at least people can find out where it is. All I know is from the map it is just in to North Yorkshire do you know anything about it? Keith D (talk) 13:58, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

It was an agricultural research place, but that was years ago. I'll have a look.--Harkey (talk) 14:54, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Not much for an article as yet, may be could go in the civil parish article if we have one. Keith D (talk) 18:10, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Looks like Duggleby. --Harkey (talk) 18:19, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
That looks like nearest village, I guess they are both in Kirby Grindalythe civil parish. Keith D (talk) 19:29, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Yes. I think perhaps both articles could do with a bit of a helping hand. Kirby Grindalythe concentrates on the village and doesn't mention Duggleby and vice-versa. So both maybe need to mention the civil parish. There are only 101 houses in the CP altogether. Interesting challenge! KG has a Sykes church though. I'll have a go in the morning.--Harkey (talk) 20:34, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Vernacular geography

I see that you created an article on vernacular geography. Coincidentally, I created a category of the same name! (I read one of the papers from the Leeds University study but I am not involved in that sort of thing so I was not up to creating an article; I am glad you did.)

However just as a certain editor has for some reason jumped in suspicion on your article, so the new Category too and it got listed for deletion. That seems odd given how useful it could be. Anything an expert in the field can add, would be useful.

Collaboration

Hi, I just spotted an active collaboration here, they do it weekly, but others do it monthly. May be can get some ideas from there for use on the Yorkshire project. I think there are some templates for collaborations if you look in the category that page is in. Keith D (talk) 23:36, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Here is a better one that would fit in with what you are proposing. Keith D (talk) 00:40, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, that's where I spotted an active collaboration too. I'm not really too sure of the amount of support we will get for a collaboration at WPYORKS. I've always found people will willingly contribute when they are asked directly, but seem reluctant to come forward otherwise. I can understand, though as I am a bit wary sometimes too.--Harkey (talk) 13:50, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Kingston upon Hull

If you have a few spare minutes can you have a look at the Kingston upon Hull article as there are a few dead links in the references that need to be replaced. I have done some of them but struggling to find replacements for the rest. You always seem to come up with a reference for them. The dead ones are 117, 151, 159 and 162. Thanks Keith D (talk) 01:44, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

I see that you have very quickly and quietly dumped the additions regarding the BBC2 History Cold Case archaeology at Windy Pits. I'd agree that the story may not be directly relevant to the town itself, but I was wondering if you could suggest where else it might fit? Windy Pits really appears only here as far as I can see. Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:34, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

But now it's back again?? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:37, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Fine. Apologies for missing that. But it was only put in this article by default. Do you think it would be better in the Duncombe Park article? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:47, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Bradford

Hello again, not noticed you about for some time so good to see you. This article isn't in good shape but I thought I'd do a bit to the history section which seems a bit poor sor a city this size.--J3Mrs (talk) 08:22, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Another article?

Hi, as you are so good at getting sources may be you could help out on Scarborough Castle. I had a peer review on this last year, which is now archived , but got stuck with the comments relating to sources as I have been unable to get any of them, apart from the one about ghosts which is not really useful. None of the history books in the library here appear to mention the castle. If you get a chance to have a look it would be good to get this moving again. Keith D (talk) 10:57, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

I'll certainly have a look at it.:-)--Harkey (talk) 11:23, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

Barnstar

What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
For directing a frustrated editor to a map of Swarcliffe, that had been a thorn in said editor's side for days, as he didn't know where to find one. I gladly give you this Barnstar for stopping this editor's hair from being pulled out, and I thank you.--andreasegde (talk) 12:06, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, just had a look at this one and think that the first thing to do here would be to fix-up the References section so that they all use the templates and are all in the same format. Then I would probably split the Notes section up in to real Notes and a References section, the existing References becoming Bibliography. The References could then be made into Havard type ones that link in to their corresponding entry in the Biography section. That would get them into some sort of standardised format and allow for easier navigation.

The External links were commented about previously so these need pruning may be some can become references if we need them and only leave the important ones in this section. They could be used to expand/reference material.

Keith D (talk) 21:49, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

This one needs an update for the 2011 election, but I could not locate any source that gave a summary of the results that could be used. If you can find a source then I would use the existing information to start the East Riding of Yorkshire Council election, 2007. I did resurrect the East Riding of Yorkshire local elections article in preparation. Keith D (talk) 21:49, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

I had already seen that one and it does not give the vote details etc. that are in the existing table. Keith D (talk) 18:35, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
I have drawn a blank on this one. It looks as though the only way will be to add up the wards - tedious though.--Harkey (talk) 21:24, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
I had thought of that but did not find the time. Thought it may be worth creating the East Riding of Yorkshire Council election, 2011 article including the ward results and using the figures from there too perform the additions but never made the effort. Keith D (talk) 22:18, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Maybe it would be possible to make a spreadsheet (by cut and paste) to do the work then converting it to a Wikitable. (Must get on with reading biographies of Captain Cook now, though!!)--Harkey (talk) 22:51, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Whitby

Hi, I am having problems with one of the references you added as it goes to the main page and not to one showing any of the figures on religion. Can you have a look at this edit? Keith D (talk) 22:50, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

I had to add up the figures for the three wards of Whitby separately as the Whitby Parish statistics didn't give much information, and none at all on religion. Would it need three separate refs?--Harkey (talk) 17:47, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
That is not the problem - the ref goes to the initial select page of the site and I could not work out how to get to any religion figures for Whitby from there. I think the URL needs redirecting to the page after you have the figures displayed. Keith D (talk) 18:28, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
I had to search for a page each for Mayfield, Streonshalh and Whitby West Cliff wards, though. Three separate searches to display. Is that OK?--Harkey (talk) 19:37, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Probably better that the search page that is used at the moment. Keith D (talk) 23:32, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Many thanks for the update. See if the reviewer has anything to say when they get started. Keith D (talk) 11:09, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

References

On Talk:Swarcliffe#Woodlands and water, I just suggested a specific reference, regarding "the beck ran crimson with blood" - this book.

I wanted to explain more about formatting references, but thought that'd be better here, on your own user talk page.

One way to make reference more consistent is to use a {{citation}} template. It's certainly not a requirement, but it can be easier to fill in parameters, instead of formatting the line manually. For example, in that case, we could put;

...the beck ran crimson with blood.<ref>{{Citation
| title=Lancaster and York: The Wars of the Roses
| author=Alison Weir
| publisher=Random House
| year=2009
| isbn=9780099540175
| page=283
| url = http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=f2ug1OWwk3wC&pg=PA283&dq=%22Cock+Beck%22+%22red+with+blood%22&hl=en&ei=XWxATsPKCci0hAfx8tnXBg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=%22Cock%20Beck%22%20%22red%20with%20blood%22&f=false</nowiki><br />
| accessdate = 2011-08-08
}}</ref>

That would appear as;

...the beck ran crimson with blood.[1]
  1. ^ Alison Weir (2009), Lancaster and York: The Wars of the Roses, Random House, p. 283, ISBN 9780099540175, retrieved 2011-08-08

Please note, that is citing the book, not the web link. The fact that there's a link to an online copy presented by Google is irrelevent, and optional; it's just a "convenience link"; if the reader actually wanted to verify the information, they would check the book itself.

There's lots of ways to present references, and no rule on which must be used. For more information, see User:Chzz/help/refs, Wikipedia:Citing sources and Template:Citation.  Chzz  ►  23:32, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for that. The question on the Swarcliffe talk page was more strategic than it appears to be, but I was curious to know whether a specific ref. to a Google URL search result remained stable enough for it to be cited.--Harkey (talk) 07:34, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
OK, I see - and the answer is no, it is not. For more reasoning, see WP:GOOGLE#Search engine tests and Wikipedia policies, and Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources. Also, the best place to ask "is this an RS" is, WP:RSN.
I hope that answers your question. If you'd like to ask anything else, feel free to contact me,
The best way to contact Chzz is IRC (text-chat), here  · Second-best is my talk page · Third-best is email Chzz@live.co.uk
Alternatively, you can always put {{helpme}} here, on your user talk page, followed by a question. Best,  Chzz  ►  11:52, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

I think there could be a WP:COI here. I followed the link for the second named "Inhabitant" in the section so named in the Swarcliffe article, then "Googled" to verify the information. This was the result [1]. I would like advice, please.--Harkey (talk) 20:51, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

What do I do about the above, please?--Harkey (talk) 20:54, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I agree COI. Shocking, in view of some of the recent edits this user has made. 109.153.219.255 (talk) 21:04, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Err, I don't get it. A video which has 27 views? I checked some edits User:Andreasegde (if this is your question), but I didn't find any problems on this article. Can you provide some diffs made by him or explain the situation more precisely, please. mabdul 23:04, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
OK, I was trying to be discreet. The User:Andreasegde has added a link on the Swarcliffe page to the page Andrew Edge, an article to which he has made an inordinate number of contributions. When checking the refs by Googling etc., I found that the Utube account for "andreasegde" is the realm of Andrew Edge. Some refs on the Andrew Edge article point to his own blog and homepage. I have only checked a few of the other refs but none, so far, prove his connections with the people he mentions, just that these people exist: of which I had no doubt anyway. Putting "Andrew Edge" into Wikipedia the search box reveals an unusual number of links in other articles. I think this may be a case of an editor being in breach of WP:COI. He has edited his own biography without declaring his interest.--Harkey (talk) 08:20, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
