In this comment you stated that the decision on the number of seats needs to be made by "Sunday night." But the voting begins at 00:01 UTC on Sunday, that is, one minute after midnight on Sunday. So Sunday night is after the voting starts. Right? (And actually where I am (U.S. Eastern time) the voting actually begins Saturday at 7 p.m.) So if you were assuming the decision needs to be made before the voting starts, it would actually need to be made Saturday (i.e. tomorrow) night UTC. My sense of orderly elections tells me that the decision needs to be made before the voting starts, but since an RfC has now been started, I am not sure that is realistic. In order to have a chance of being accepted as legitimate, it may be that the RfC needs to run for 4 or 5 days, and in the meantime, the main elections page does tell the voters that the issue of the number of seats is under discussion. Closing the RfC on, say, November 30 would still leave people who have already voted with 10 days to go back and change their votes. Hopefully this situation will provide impetus for all of us to get these details clarified once and for all so this never happens again. Neutron (talk) 20:04, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview
Dear Happy-melon,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Gadgets
Is it possible to block an editor from using one or more gadgets? Or is it necessary to just block the editor?
For example, in the cases of awb and the like, the privilege can be removed.
But can the usage of something like hotcat be removed from the editor?
(Noting that I realise that there are several ways to get access to hotcat, and not just through a checkbox in preferences.)

- I don't think there is a way to refuse a gadget for specific people at the moment.
FWIW, while Twinkle used to have a "blacklist" to try and deny specific editors access to the script, the blacklist was removed following community discussion. In essence, the idea was that if someone is abusing Twinkle and refuses to stop using it, the problem goes deeper than mere usage of Twinkle. This discussion can probably be transferred to other gadgets as well.

Dr. Steel page - vandalism again.
Hi Happy-Melon. Remember last year, there was a lot of vandalism going on to the Dr. Steel page, primarily someone insisting on posting who they believed the person's real name was, in violation of WP:BIO, and you had the page semi-protected? All has been mostly quiet since then, until now. Since Dr. Steel's retirement, someone's been coming onto the page vandalizing it, claiming Dr. Steel was really "abducted by aliens" and also claiming to be the son of the person previously claimed as Dr. Steel's real name.
I'm not sure at this point if the page should be semi-protected again, or if something can just be done about the individual user (who always posts anonymously, but always from the same IP address: 63.215.132.174). I wouldn't even bother you except that he is persistent in his vandalism, and started vandalizing and altering the talk page as well. Can you have a look over there at recent edits (both on the main page and the bottom of the talk page) and let me know how you think we should proceed? - Hi Jonny. The fringe theory the IP is espousing is certainly inappropriate, but they may just be sarcastically highlighting the lack of reliable verification of the more 'mainstream' explanation for his lack of activity. While I think Occam's razor certainly supports 'retirement' as the answer, that is not actually supported by reliable sources in the article: the link to the forum can't be viewed by non-subscribers, and a forum post is not a reliable source in any case.
- If you can add reliable sources for the information that the IP is removing, then any subsequent repetitions of the replacement would certainly be disruptive and could be dealt with by protection or warning/blocking. Hope this helps. Happy‑melon 10:36, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- I have sent a request to the current leaders of Dr. Steel's fan club that the letter from Dr. Steel be moved from out of the forums to their "About Dr. Steel" page. Even though it was personal correspondence, it's really the only "proof" that exists, from what I understand. Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted
I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Reg. Your deletion of ancestry chart of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
Hi! I did not understand your rationale of undoing my contribution of the ancestry chart. The summary of this chart is already given in the preceding section titled "Ancestry" and you did not deign to remove it. My chart is based on research by others such as William Addams Reitwiesner and the data is available on the net. Removing an item without proper justification and only on the basis of not believing it amounts to vandalism, as I see it. - I did not remove it because I disbelieve it, I have reasonable respect for the sources you used and have no reason to doubt the lineage. I removed it because it is utterly irrelevant to the article. She is, indubitably, related similarly distantly to a variety of famous figures, contemporary and historical, and none of those connections are even the slightest bit notable, save perhaps the relationship to William himself on the basis of the extremely faint level of incest. call a template once every 612 hours
Hello Mr happy melon! I hope you have a free time to help me find a solution, I created a template w:ar:template:Minmaxskipgen , which will generate a random number based on seconds of time function ("{{#time:U}}"), I need a method/function to call the minmaskipgen template, to substitute the generated value, once every 12 hours; like ("{{#ifexpr:{{#expr:{{#time:hi}} = 0101}} |<includeonly>{{subst:</includeonly>{{minmaxskipgen|max=180}}}}|otherwise the value remain unchanged}}"), the problem is that the generated value will not keep the value for a duration of 612 hours, instead it will generate a new value every time the template is being called, regards.--Antime •(Talk) 04:26, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Happy-melon. Thank you for closing some of the discussions at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure. When you close a discussion, would you leave a note that you've closed the discussion? The practice has been that a day or two after a close, the discussion request is archived to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure/Archive 2.
Also, would you add a closing rationale to Talk:Super Tuesday, 2012#Merge? I think the debate is divided enough that a rationale is warranted. Thanks, Cunard (talk) 21:19, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sure, no problem. The Super Tuesday debate doesn't seem particularly divided to me; the Oppose group argue almost exclusively on a dubious interpretation of WP:LENGTH, while the Support group are both more numerous and have a wider range of arguments. - The requests are usually kept on the board for one or two days, but when there's a backlog, I think it's okay just to archive them immediately. - Well I hope your real life is still tedious because I have a question for you! How feasible would it be to alter the appearance of the {{ambox}} template when it is placed inside another template (e.g. {{multiple issues}})? Basically I would like it to take up one row and just output the raw text of the message in these cases. Help with sortable script
Hello, Happy-melon. I posted what I think is a bug at VPT having to do with either the JS or the CSS. I don't think I should need to file a bug report for it, as it could be a simple local edit, but I don't know. I haven't gotten any real responses to it, and I don't know how to solicit them without directly asking at this point. As you have the knowledge and access to deal with this problem, or at least confirm that it is a valid problem, and not just some glaring error I made, would you please take a look at it? Sooo, since you note that you're back (at least for awhile) any chance I could entreat you to help me with AWB? I'm approved to use it, but I'll freely admit that I'm not sure how it works/how it interacts with the wiki (and as such am somewhat nervous of playing with it until I'm more sure about not breaking anything : )
I created a secondary account (User:Jc377) for use with it. Though it's been long enough that I think I'm not sure I remember the password : )

It's worth remembering that unless you have the bot flag on the account you use with AWB (which I guess you don't) each edit requires manual confirmation; so there's not too much damage you can do! Hi Happy-melon! The Project Banner for the British Royalty Project was created waaaaaaayyy back when upper & lower case in the Banner name and Assessment pages didn't matter. Now it's a little irksome. I wondered if you knew of any "cleanup bot" to fix this common issue? If I don't hear from you, I'll just do the redirects. Just thought I'd ask. Ship class list
Hola. I'm wondering if you have a preference for how to handle the unused template {{Ship class list}} ?
- You created it, as part of Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2008 May 28#Template:Class box Albatros corvette way back in 2008.
- I came across it whilst in this tfd: Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2012 September 17#Template:Class box Oliver Hazard Perry frigate which just closed and resulted in 112 templates being deleted. See that thread, for my explanation of the cleanup work that was completed.

Hey there, I notice that you reverted one of my edits citing that it is Original Research. Can you explain why that is? Only because in the film it is said that is the reason for his promotion. - Howdy. I undid mainly because the wording seemed an overly-simplistic rationale that had the hallmarks of being just a detail rather than the whole story; as you've just demonstrated above, the full explanation for why he did it is more complicated than just one reason. The most likely conclusion was that it's not explored in detail in the film and what you put was just your own analysis. If it is explained explicitly in the film then it's not OR, for sure; but to explain it correctly requires going into rather too much detail in what is already quite a long plot summary. The reasons why he was promoted are not important for the rest of the plot, so spelling them out to that degree is probably unnecessarily bloating the plot. Happy‑melon 16:46, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

I am wondering if you can help me. I am trying to implement a Taskforce system on the Template:WikiProject_Ethiopia. I got everything working the way I want. I just have to create the categories used. Only problem is that one of the warnings for People and culture department is missing and I can't be sure if the categories are big used properly with out the warning. - The way to check is to move the "tf 1" set of parameters in the hook section (People and culture) over and replace the other "tf 1" set of parameters (Climate and environment) and the just use the Show preview button to then see the messages. - I actually quite like some of these ideas; it's basically the 'gamification' of code development, trying to make it fun, instantly-rewarding and also slightly (positively) competitive. I think most of the development community will hate it, however, especially the more established members. Which is arguably the whole point, but still a big obstacle nonetheless. Yes, some more like it more than others but we could argüe that the current "model" also fails to engage people, with the difference that we don't even get to know because they simply don't arrive / walk away. One good thing is that development workflows are untouched: Bugzilla, Gerrit, docs, IRC and wikitech-l will work as usual. If someone doesn't want to add data to their profile, join groups etc nothing wrong will happen. Certain skepticism and opposition is good! - When I add the two templates to the page, the page gets rendered so that they end up in the middle of the page and the text of the page is half a head of them and half after them. Could you please clarify the following statements you made in the closure of the RfD for CSD: pages?
- one editor cannot have the ability to unilaterally create a new pseudo-namespace which immediately becomes magically exempt from scrutiny.
- This looks a whole lot like a "policy supervote", where you're giving your opinion on something that, frankly, is not in policy.
- the argument that cross-namespace redirects are inherently deletable is strong
- The policy explicitly provides exemptions for any CNR that is a "pseudonamespace", so this argument does not apply, unless you are supervoting the opinion above into the discussion.
Please note that I'm totally fine with the close, but I'd ask you to amend your close statement to not include such statements that could be seen as "meta policy decisions" or "supervotes" instead of summarizing the consensus in the discussion. Sorry for the trouble, I just don't want this to look bad on you in the future (if it were to go to DRV or anything, I see it's already attempted to go to AN). ~Charmlet -talk- 20:18, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

- I wouldn't say this was a "policy supervote" so much as needing to use judgement to establish the community consensus as to the spirit of a policy fragment which is easily game-able in letter. As I understand the history of the pseudo-namespace and cross-namespace-redirect issue, the consensus that that policy fragment is trying to express is that cross-namespace redirects are, in general, bad and should be deleted, but that there is a need to tolerate the existence of a few historical redirects mainly for the purpose of avoiding link rot ("cool urls don't break", etc).
- That sentiment is adequately conveyed by the letter of the policy at the time it was written: "all XNRs are deletable, except the PSRs which currently exist". The policy letter doesn't say anything about new PSRs, but more general policies (WP:CONSENSUS, WP:NOT#BURO, etc) provide the 'correct' intrepretation: it would not be compatible with our ethos for a policy to be read in such a way as to give unilateral powers to a single editor. I don't have any right to create the pseudo-namespace "HM:" (HM:U → User:Happy-melon, HM:S → User:Happy-melon/sandbox1, etc), for instance, regardless of whether I think it would be useful (for me or for others). That sentiment was clear from the comments in both the RfD, and in previous discussions I looked at.
- In short, then, the two quotes you make are both comments on the discussion I was closing, as required by the role of closer, but they are indeed comments about the strength of certain arguments in relation to other policy. That's precisely the nuanced analysis we require admins to make on XfD closures, and why we have admin closures. If simple vote counting was all that was required, there would be no need to limit who could close such discussions. Happy‑melon 22:08, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

ACE Candidates
Hi, Happy‑melon,
Since you've been on the Election Committee for five years now, I'm hoping you have a good perspective for this process. I have a couple of questions.
- Did the nomination period use to be longer (closer to two weeks)? A week doesn't seem long enough for potential cadidates to make up their minds or be persuaded to run. I understand that these decisions are made before the election and are not under the committees' control, I was just wondering if you remembered if this had changed.
- After four days, it seems like there is a low number of candidates (I believe there were 4 when I last checked). Is this typical, I mean, do a lot of candidates throw their hat into the ring on the last day to sign up?

Can you help me?
Hi, Happy-melon. :) I'm trying to figure out the origin of some of the text (specifically the copyright section) that appeared here when you substituted two cross-wiki templates that had been deleted at MFD. It looks like the whole section was added by substituting {{h:f|langs=|enname=Page history}}
, but I can't find the history of that text at Meta, and I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right place - meta:Template:H:f seems to be simply the footer for the help system, and when I trace it to their Help page for page histories, looking at the most recent to substitution, here, there is no copyright section there. I'm not up to parsing the code, I'm afraid, and finding if there is or was another location. Can you help me figure out where that material originated? I removed the image from Quidditch#Quidditch_pitch, as it is wholly unnecessary to the prose. The image isn't discussed in the prose, nor is it significant in its own right. It's just a stadium. Extended confirmed protection
Hello, Happy-melon. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

A new user right for New Page Patrollers
Hi Happy-melon.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

- A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
- Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
- Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.
- When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
- Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
- The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.
- The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.
- JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

for {{Link language}}. However, I could not find any discussions about this change, or a reason that would warrant it.
Also, is that class defined anywhere? I couldn't see it in Vector or Monobook...

Hello, Happy-melon. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity
Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time, and that you have not been inactive from administrative tasks for a five year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. Further, following a community discussion in March of 2018, Administrators suspended for inactivity who have not had any logged administrative activity for five years will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way.
