Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Template:WPBannerMeta

Hello HM, I understand from the response to my post over at WP:VPT that you are one of the experts in all things {{WPBannerMeta}}. My question is this: I know by adding the /inactive suffix, one can reflect that a stand-alone WikiProject is inactive, such as {{WikiProject The Supremes}}. But is there similar code that will show a WikiProject (or task force) as inactive when it is part of a larger, still active project? For example, how can we show the Transport in Scotland project as inactive in {{WikiProject Trains}}? (seems would be better than just deleting the subproject code completely). Can we just add a TF_x_Status = inactive parameter to the {{WPBannerMeta}} code? Thanks in advance for your help! UnitedStatesian (talk) 15:12, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi there. Sorry for the belated reply; I'm afraid that while I was once a lead developer of WPBM, it's been years since I actively worked on it, so I'm not really able to advise. I hope you found an answer to your question from another source. Happymelon 16:55, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

My song, "Tools"

You just stay around to keep the tools, you just stay around to keep the tools! You think that we're all fools, you just stay around to keep the tools! Making minute edits every year, you make minute edits every year! We can see it's very clear, you make minute edits every year! Users such as yourself who make a significantly low amount of edits just to keep your administrative tools sicken me and many others. Just give up the tools already!!! What are you holding on to them for anyways!! What a selfish thing to do!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.35.97.209 (talk) 00:15, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

What a jolly ditty :p I'd agree that it would be selfish to deprive a more active user of the 'chance', if there were a limited number of mops to pass around. But since there is no such limit on bucket capacity, and that holding a mop is no big deal, I'm afraid I can't agree. I'm sorry that it makes you feel so strongly. FWIW, I fully intend to return to Wikipedia just as soon as my diet kicks off, ie very soon...  :( Happymelon 19:52, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

What tune should this be sung to? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:45, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Old peer reviews using manual archive naming requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

List of Nazi monuments in Canada (delete request)

100% you are correct that the page move is controversial. But I think User:Storchy asked you to delete the page above to enable a controversial move to be reverted. i.e. The page above should be deleted, so that a controversial move can be undone back to that location. CT55555 (talk) 15:13, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

You're quite right, and actually it's a right mess of moves over there, isn't it! I've restored the article to its original title and move-protected for a short time, as there has clearly been some move-warring over the past couple of days. Happymelon 15:35, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. Partly this is my fault because I started the article and the sourcing was decent but not bullet-proof to begin with, which was a factor in some people making bold moves. Thanks for taking the time to understand the short but already complicated history of the article. CT55555 (talk) 15:39, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

I hope not to bother @Happy-melon, me and other users had to create (for an Educational Project) this draft page: Draft: Velca Design, we have submitted it on 9th of December and we wanted to kindly ask you if you could have a look and tell us how to improve it in order to fix all the mistakes. Thank you for your time. Fraliuc2 (talk) 12:38, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi Fraliuc2, congratulations on writing a great first draft :-) I think the most important thing that the article is lacking is a few references for key statements, like "went on to become one of the biggest suppliers of office furniture". The History section is also a bit jumbled up time-wise, with the "Early Years" section including information about the ending of the company, followed by other sections that describe its operations at an earlier time. You might be able to reorganise that section to read more clearly. But in general that's a great draft. Happymelon 08:57, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
