One to check?
[edit]I mentioned it in passing on the talk page, but in my opinion, Royroydeb's 2 GAs don't show any substantive work in 2016.
Zesh Rehman This one looks like he's added content, but if you actually compare the revisions, it's taking out a couple of things, and just changing the format of the dates in the cites - clearly not worthy of the points.
Darren O'Dea This one, he's just taken out one sentence and formatted a table.
I am sure you have lots to check and I thought these might sneak through because at first glance it looks okay - but they're clearly not, and I thought you'd want to nip it in the bud before he continues on flouting the rules.

Antarctica
[edit]I hope you enjoyed your visit to Antarctica and I imagine you now have a large number of images of cold places and things. I saw you had written and illustrated an article on the Carbajal Valley (are you going to submit it for DYK?), but there are no articles, as far as I can see, on the mountains on either side of your valley. I was wondering if you would like to consider co-operating on any articles, either existent or new, for which you now have suitable images. Besides writing articles on organisms, I am interested in ecology, national parks, geography etc., especially of places with extreme environments such as deserts, mountains, bogs and ice sheets. Let me know if you would be interested. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:44, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Cwmhiraeth- I think that's a good idea. I was actually thinking the same thing a few days ago when I realized I was pushing my comfort zone writing about glacial geology... I've processed most of my Antarctica photos and am working on the aerial Tierra del Fuego ones now. Most of what has been written on the geography of the area is on the Spanish Wikipedia, and not very detailed. You're correct, neither the Alvear mountain range nor the Vinciguerra range to the south have articles, there is another range (need to get the name) adjacent to it. But I need to see what good illustrative images I have. Look here to see current possibilities (the aerial section is incomplete). Possibilities include: Ojo del Albino Glacier, Laguna Esmeralda (or both together for a GA or better combination), porpoising behavior in penguins (good images of all the major penguin types in the Antarctic peninsula in action). I'm working on a set of images (fair quality) of a Stanley, Falkland Islands war memorial to the British soldiers killed in the 1982 conflict. This too would need an article. In short, I'm sure we can find several opportunities to collaborate.--Godot13 (talk) 18:41, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- They're beautiful photographs. It might be possible to expand some existing articles like Tabarin Peninsula, Antarctic Sound or Trinity Island, but I think it would be difficult to find much about the Patagonian glaciers, mountains or lakes at the top of your collection. This is a nice book source.Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:31, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- I found most of the (limited) information for the Carbajal from academic research papers. The Ojo del Albino (and the resulting Laguna) may have some similar info, along with tourism info as they are recommended hiking sites in the area. I agree about the others. I have no images of Trinity Island per se, only those taken of the very small island in the harbour. For things like the peninsula or sound, would you give me your opinion (as a more objective editor in this case) of which images would be most encyclopedic in those cases?--Godot13 (talk) 23:15, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- I have expanded Tabarin Peninsula, but I found the geological part hard and I couldn't find a suitable url for the main pdf source. I suggest you choose whatever images you think best. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 21:12, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
- I added two images to correspond with the geographical locations mentioned on the peninsula. There's no way to picture the entire peninsula (barring a NASA image...), but I'll look for some others.-Godot13 (talk) 21:55, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
- If you want to add any images to it, or replace the one that is there, I have now got around to enlarging Antarctic Sound. Looking at your other images, most are birds, and although the Trinity Island, Mikkelsen Harbor and D'Hainaut Island articles could be expanded, there's a limit to how many bird images you can add to a particular geographical article. However, some of the species articles like Wandering albatross would benefit from the addition of better images. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:11, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
- I'm currently editing another 1-2 images of wandering albatross behavior and will look at them against the others I have to add another to the article. Having only written FLs and never an FA, how much work do you think would be involved to get Penguin to GA and/or FA? I've been collecting penguin references since I got back as I thought about writing an article on penguin porpoising behavior (numerous illustrations). Would such an article need to be part of a larger one, or could it stand alone?--Godot13 (talk) 18:49, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
- The article Penguin is not at all well-referenced and would need quite a bit of work. GA would be doable, and FA considerably more difficult because for FA an article needs to be comprehensive. It is probably easier to work on a penguin species article for GA or FA, rather than an all-embracing family/order article. You could approach an experienced bird editor for a joint endeavour. My first bird FAs were Western jackdaw with Cas Liber and Common starling with Jimfbleak, and I learnt a lot in the process. I would have thought an article on penguin porpoising behavior would be interesting and could stand alone, and then a paragraph on the subject could also be added to the article Penguin. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:28, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Carbajal Valley
[edit]On 22 February 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Carbajal Valley, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Carbajal Valley (pictured) was carved by a glacier with ice 600–800 metres (2,000–2,600 ft) thick? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Carbajal Valley. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

333-blue
[edit]Godot13, you pinged me when you did a talk-page post to 333-blue noting that the two GA review submissions were inadequate, and made some recommendations, one of which was to get some mentoring. 333 ignored that suggestion, the same as when I made a similar one a while back.
333-blue's next edit after your post was to open a new GA review, Talk:Hi-Level/GA1, which has just been promoted. While longer, the review was as much a disaster as the earlier ones. This will make three problematic GA reviews in a row, and it's not fair to the people who nominate the articles even if 333 does end up passing them: we don't know whether they are Good Articles because the criteria aren't understood or being applied properly.
I was surprised to see that 333-blue, during the above GA review, went to comment on last month's completed peer review of Hi-Level, and has started a peer review for one of the articles you disallowed GA review credit for, Wikipedia:Peer review/Hyōgo-ku, Kobe/archive1, because 333 wants to promote it to FA. When I looked at the article at the time 333 passed it, my thought was that it was not GA quality and still needed some work.
This is someone who doesn't understand the GA criteria or how they should be applied, and unfortunately the lure of WikiCup points is what got 333 started and probably continues to drive the reviews. I'm very much hoping you and the other judges will bar 333 from this category of participation, given a persistent inability to conduct a proper review. I've banged my head against this particular brick wall already.
Thank you for your consideration. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:25, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

You also have to understand that once an article has passed GA, it shouldn't need anything else beyond possible updating, vandalism removal, etc, or expansion to go to FA. [edit]Did you go through the Good Article reviews and remove the unworthy ones? — Calvin999 21:57, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- In what I reviewed, I removed 8 GAR, 10 DYK, 1 GA, and 1 FL. I almost removed another DYK where a 5x expansion was submitted several days past the seven day deadline (and promoted due to some supplemental rule loophole), but I adopted a live and let live mindset instead...--Godot13 (talk) 23:22, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- DYK's are allowed if they were submitted after the deadline if there isn't a backlog so that's okay. I think I found more than 8 when I previously contacted you. Suggestion for next year: I'd consider removing points for GARs altogether. People abuse it. — Calvin999 09:06, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
WikiCup 2015 March newsletter
[edit]That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.
Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by MPJ-DK (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), and Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.
If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Mormon gold coinage 1849-1860
[edit]Very curious to know whether the national collection, which you so memorably photographed last year, includes high-grade examples of these rarities. I only know of them from following Heritage Auctions by email (you ARE subscribed, I hope!?! It's free) and the memorable examples which have come up for sale through them in recent years. You don't have to be LDS to appreciate them; they are full of hope, aspiration, and (Masonic) charm. Though apparently minted in some quantity, at least in certain years, they were considers relatively "crude" and often suspected of being underweight for their stated denominations. Thus most were melted down a century and a half ago after arriving in the East, where they were sent to buy pioneer provisions. The subject definitely deserves a Wikipedia article. Am I somehow missing that article here? Have the series been overlooked? Have you run across these coins in collections? →Vesuvius Dogg (talk) 04:32, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Vesuvius Dogg- I certainly know the coins of which you speak. Let me preface this by saying my knowledge in territorial gold is limited. Mormon gold (aka Utah Territorial gold) is among the scarcer of the territorial coinage with truly high grade examples virtually unknown. The NNC has a few pieces, one is currently on display in the newest exhibit "The Value of Money". I'll look around to see if there are references to these coins that could have been tucked away on Wikipedia. I'll also see which examples Heritage has offered and (if the image quality is up to snuff) upload them. I'll see about getting some high res images from the Smithsonian. There is one caveat: I leave today for 8 weeks. I can work on some of this while I'm away, but I will be back at the Smithsonian in August. --Godot13 (talk) 09:49, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- I did find one low-res obverse example on Commons — a wonderful illustration of the Deseret alphabet — but if you are back at the Smithsonian in August and have the opportunity photograph again, there are apparently some wonderful specimens of various denominations including the very rare 1849 $10 piece in AU55 uncertified, one of the best of only a dozen or so surviving coins from that first year (the Smithsonian example was apparently "retrieved from gold sent in for melt", one can only wonder when). Enjoy that million dollar coin on my behalf! And look out for later years and denominations with their very intriguing designs. Thanks so much again Vesuvius Dogg (talk) 00:45, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for finding a photo of the milkmaid on the original site. Personally I find it too small to allow seeing much detail. However, my main reason for reverting is that the present statue there is not the original either; that's in a local museum. In terms of background, one looks very like the other. If it's authenticity we're after, there's an old coloured print I once came across on the web which shows the scene much nearer the time the statue was put in place. Do you know it? Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 09:13, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- Mzilikazi1939- Before reverting for being too small, did you try clicking on the image to open it (to full size)? The thumbnail can be enlarged within the same space to enlarge on any given detail. I'll wait for your response before putting it back...--Godot13 (talk) 20:28, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes, of course I clicked, and then reclicked to enlarge the image further, but how many of the usual readers will bother? What they will see on the page is a huge, artificial-looking boulder with the statue a mere dot on its surface. Let me emphasise too that the article is about the fable of the milkmaid and therefore her image needs to make an immediate impact. Your remark about putting your photo back appears to me premature and ill-thought out. I'm quite prepared to take the question to arbitration, however. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 21:34, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- Mzilikazi1939- Wow! I was trying to explain that the thumbnail can enlarge any section of the image (like just the girl and the pitcher, even the pitcher with the water pouring), and would have tried a variant, and you're ready to go to arbitration. Bit trigger happy no?--Godot13 (talk) 23:11, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
The arbitration offer was for your convenience since you seemed trigger finger itchy to revert. You have still not given any reason for preferring the Russian location, since the statue is no more authentic than the German copy. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 19:45, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
- Mzilikazi1939- Higher resolution, greater detail, better focus at full size, brighter more appealing color. It's not the Russian location that I prefer, it's the image used to illustrate the folk story... And I think it makes a bigger impact on the reader. Any of the examples can be adjusted...--Godot13 (talk) 19:55, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
The composition of the photo is lousy -look at the distracting tree-trunks growing out of the milkmaid's back. The statue is streaky and the features are blurred (nothing to do with focus, just poor workmanship). The 'impact on the reader' - this one anyway - is emetic. Short of arbitration, why don't we put the pics side by side somewhere and see what others think? Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 20:45, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
- There you go with arbitration again. Thanks, but no thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 22:27, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Wikicup Report
[edit]I cannot write a Signpost report about myself. If the Wikicup is meant to be in the Signpost - which it hasn't been for the last two rounds due to the lack of newsletter - the newsletter about the end needs to come out no later than November 15, and, really, if we're being at all practical, by November 7. Hope this isn't rude, just, y'know, better to say when things need to happen by instead of surprising. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:39, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
As there was an open question... In previous years, the FL, FA, etc... prizes went to the person who scored the most points in a single round from that content type. That way, the finalists didn't have an overwhelming advantage over competitors eliminated earlier. Let me know if there are any other questions about how things were done in previous years and I'll do my best to help. Josh Milburn (talk) 13:01, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup
[edit]Greetings, all! We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time. The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring. Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now! If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges. Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase. We apologize for the delay in sending out this message until after the competition has started. Thank you to Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for aiding in getting this message out. To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

[edit]WikiCup signups
[edit]Don't be scared to advertise the signups in a few places; if you do a round of messages (talk page of newsletter recipients, a few key talk pages, a Signpost mention) now and another one when the competition starts, you'll hopefully be able to get two big waves of signups, as well as the people who trickle in intermittently. Bizarrely, as I suspect you realise, the WikiCup does rely on having a big signup list, even if lots of people who signup don't actually directly participate. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!
[edit]Hello, Godot13. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

WikiCup December newsletter: WikiCup 2017
[edit]On 1 January 2017, WikiCup 2017 (the 10th Annual WikiCup) will begin. This year we are trying something a little different – monetary prizes.
For the WC2017 the prizes will be as follows (amounts are based in US$ and will be awarded in the form of an online Amazon gift certificate):
- First place – $200
- Second & Third place – $50 each
- Category prizes – $25 per category (which will be limited to FA, FL, FP, GA, and DYK for 2017). Winning a category prize does not require making it to the final round.
Note: Monetary prizes are a one-year experiment for 2017 and may or may not be continued in the future. In order to be eligible to receive any of the prizes above, the competing Wikipedia account must have a valid/active email address.
After two years as a WikiCup judge, Figureskatingfan is stepping down. We thank her for her contributions as a WikiCup judge. We are pleased to announce that our newest judge is two-time WikiCup champion Cwmhiraeth.
The judges for the 2017 WikiCup are Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email).

POTD notification
[edit]Hi Andrew,
Just to let you know, the Featured Picture File:HAMILTON, Alexander-Treasury (BEP engraved portrait).jpg is scheduled to be Picture of the Day on January 11, 2017. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2017-01-11. Thank you for all of your contributions! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:19, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
- Chris- Excellent job on the blurb and I'm thrilled this portrait will be in POTD on his birthday. Is it worth noting (it may be too limited as a point of interest) that the engraved portrait appeared on the $20 1880 Legal Tender Note?--Godot13 (talk) 02:53, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hmm... well, we could add an extra sentence contextualizing this portrait. I'm just worried that the blurb will end up too long. It's already longer than a lot of other POTD blurbs. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 04:07, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
- You're right. It's good as is.--Godot13 (talk) 04:45, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

WikiCup questions
[edit]Hi Godot13! Happy holidays!
I'm very new to the wikiCup, and I have a couple of (probably stupid) questions about it. I'd appreciate if you could spare a couple of minutes for me:
- Do I understand correctly that the score is not cumulative, i.e. the score earned in round 1 won't help you in round 2?
- Suppose I wrote 80% of an article in 2016, then do another 20% in January and nominate it for 'featured' during round 1. Will it count towards the cup?
- Finally, I've never submitted my stuff to GA because of the colossal wait. What happens if you go for GA, but your nomination(s) is/are stuck there for months and months? I understand that in this case, the article(s) won't count, correct?
Thanks in advance, 凰兰时罗 (talk) 20:27, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hi 凰兰时罗, and thanks for your inquiry. Generally speaking the only stupid question is the one you don't ask...
- You are correct. The idea behind this is to prevent runaway scores over the course of the competition. It also keeps editors on their toes throughout the competition.
- In my opinion (and the other judges @Cwmhiraeth and Sturmvogel 66: would need to weigh in on this), if you wrote 20% of an article during the course of the WikiCup, took it to FAC, made their suggested revisions, and passed, that would likely count as the necessary significant contribution for credit.
- You are correct. But if you do a lot of GAR on Wikicup related GA nominations, I would hope that the favor would be returned (no guarantees though). I hope these answers are helpful.--Godot13 (talk) 06:22, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
- I agree with Godot13. You will find that similar questions were asked yesterday at the WikiCup discussion page and the responses I made there may clarify things. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:34, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks! 凰兰时罗 (talk) 10:49, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
