  • Voting in the 2023 Steward elections will begin on 05 February 2023, 21:00 (UTC) and end on 26 February 2023, 21:00 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • Voting in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey will begin on 10 February 2023 and end on 24 February 2023. You can submit, discuss and revise proposals until 6 February 2023.

Bug in DRN tracker

In Template:DRN case status, section links are encoded with spaces instead of underscores, which are sometimes automatically corrected to %20 and creating broken links. However, this happens only on WP:DRN itself. Permalink of a revision which produced a broken link to the section "Al-Bayan (radio station)" in this revision of DRN. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 08:16, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

@LaundryPizza03 acknowledged, I'll try to take a look at this in the coming day or two. firefly ( t · c ) 19:11, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
@LaundryPizza03 had a look at this - it's fixable by swapping spaces for underscores, but then that results in rather ugly markup in the template... I'll have to see if there's a better solution :) firefly ( t · c ) 18:15, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

FireflyBot

Hello, Firefly,

It looks like your bot is no longer posting CSD G13 5 month notices since last night. It stopped right after posting 101 notifications to BD2412's user talk page so I just want to make sure that the bot hasn't been shut down because of this flood of notices. I'm sure getting that many notices is annoying but FireflyBot's work is essential for new editors who might have forgotten about drafts they have started. Can you look into this? Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 00:29, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

@Liz no, I'd not heard anything about the notice flood - I'll check and see what's going on. firefly ( t · c ) 08:08, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

ZaniGiovanni Comments

Hi @Firefly, (full disclosure, I also asked this on ToBeFree's talk page, but am messaging you also incase they're unavailable) I was wondering if it was appropriate for ZaniGiovanni to be commenting and adding diffs about other parties (I thought the evidence phase closed on 21 February?) in the talk page of Armenia-Azerbaijan 3/Proposed decision considering that the note at the top of the page clearly states "all editors must create a section for their statement and comment only in their own section." Thank you, – Olympian loquere 01:58, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Linter down

Your very helpful Linter count page keeps returning "connection timed out" today. Notifying you in case you weren't aware and was something you were able to address. Zinnober9 (talk) 18:36, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

@Zinnober9 hmmm it seems to be working for me. What is the exact error you see? Thanks! firefly ( t · c ) 20:42, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
It was non-reponsive, just timing out and not loading, for an hour or three earlier today. It is back now. A glitch in the matrix.... – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:51, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
It's working again now. The browser was returning a nonresponsive website error saying "connection timed out" for about an hour (that I was aware of). I guess it was just a server hiccup or something. Glad it sorted itself out, sorry if I bothered you. Zinnober9 (talk) 22:51, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Can you please restart the tool for german wikipedia As of 2023-02-25 07:15:21 it is frozen since yesterday, it seems like it only works for english pages without simple and all other languages. --Lómelinde (talk) 05:33, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Have you seen my request? The tool still does not work since 25th of february. --Lómelinde (talk) 06:12, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Lómelinde seems to be a stuck job, set it to delete so hopefully it should clear up and run successfully next time. firefly ( t · c ) 14:00, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
I hope so, it is much more comfortable to work when the tool shows what is changing. --Lómelinde (talk) 14:07, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Hallo firefly, the tool is still not working, can you please try again to restart it? In german project I can count the errors, because we are comming closer to the goal. But other wikiprojeckts with hundredthousands of errors will need the update, so do I think, more than german wp. Do you see a chance to make it run again? --Lómelinde (talk) 07:05, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Seems that the stuck job didn't clear properly, and resists all attempts to delete it! :) I've asked on IRC to see if one of the Toolforge admins can help out... firefly ( t · c ) 08:17, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Incremental reminders

Hi! I mentioned but forgot to ping you at User_talk:Liz#Expiring_drafts. Is there a reason the bot doesn't do five-month reminders when a draft is again up for deletion? For me it's a non issue - I'm an admin and looking at sources, there's still not enough so no point in restoring-but wondered if others run into this. Thanks either way! Revision deletion

Hello, Firefly,

I saw that you did a revision deletion on User talk:97.89.25.236 but you didn't remove any content you found objectionable. So, while no one can look at that edit, all of the content that was added to the talk page still remains. I'm not sure of the extent of the content you found inappropriate but you might remove or redact that content and then do a revision deletion of any intermediate edits. Thank you. Liz Read! Blocked editor breaching topic ban on their talk page

Hey. Reaching out to you as you're the editor who made the block indefinite after the first TBAN violation. Could you look at removing the talk page access of Paddykumar (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) please? Twice today he has linked to tweets that violate his TBAN ([1], [2]) and in his first message he engaged in a mild personal attack and grave dancing about another recently TBANed editor. reg Block

Hi, with reg to Module_talk:Political_party#Hex_values, I do not plan to make mass subs or any sub to be specific because some people are unhappy and the sub is against the pref of original entry, if that's how they wanted it to be. Can you please shorten/revoke the block as I would like to fix 2 pages in the namespace which breaks a link and another an active request. Thanks REEDriler (talk) 14:08, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

@REEDriler apologies for not seeing this sooner - the block has now expired, so this is somewhat irrelevant, but even so I wouldn't have lifted it as your comments at Module_talk:Political_party#Hex_values seemed combative rather than cooperative, and didn't speak to an understanding of why the block was necessary. Things like Another guy, with no interest in this module whatsoever, breaking links and I would rather enjoy fixing your mistake myself really aren't necessary. firefly ( t · c ) 13:15, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
I did enjoy it. Sorry for being expressive. REEDriler (talk) 13:38, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Question concerning Wikipedia's warn policy

In wikipedia's warn policy, it states, that before a user can motion a new warning to a user (lets call them JohnDoe2), that the recipient (JohnDoe2) of the previous one must have had the appropriate time to view it and react to the warning.

I'd like to know if the user had resumed vandalizing, but hadn't reacted to the warning, could it be appropriate to warn them again?

If there is no common or explanatory answer, than I can refer to a member of the Arbitration Committee instead.

BillClinternet (talk) 03:07, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

@BillClinternet - if a user is warned, and then resumes vandalising after the warning has been delivered then it's very common to warn again. Perhaps best not to deliver a fresh warning if the new edits are seconds after the old one, but if it's minutes later and the user resumes spamming "poop lol" then you can safely escalate the warning. firefly ( t · c ) 11:35, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Royan journals

Hi, RE the Royan journals SPI you closed just now (thanks!), I noticed in the Royan Institute history another account, Royaninternationaldept, which must be from the same farm. They've only made one edit, and that was last year, so it's probably dead, but the username is so obvious that you might as well block that, too, right? (I didn't want to add it to the SPI now that it's closed.) Thanks, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:57, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

FireflyBot

Hello, Firefly,

Going through recent CSD G13s, I noticed that none of the editors had 5 month notices posted to the draft creators' talk pages. When I checked FireflyBot's contributions, it looked like they stopped posting 5 month notices almost a month ago! Could you get it started again? I'm surprised that no one noticed that it stopped working on April 2nd. Please help! Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 02:50, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Firefly,
Any idea when FireflyBot get back to notifying draft editors about their expiring drafts? I think it is one of the most important tasks a Wikipedia bot does as most of these drafts are created by new editors and the notices provide a lot of useful information. I hope it can start up again soon. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 06:41, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
@Liz - fixed! Job had gotten stuck - the bot runs on an hourly trigger, and if one of those jobs fails to end cleanly the next one sometimes has trouble starting. firefly ( t · c ) 07:56, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I should really check on it every few weeks to make sure it is running okay. I appreciate your help! Liz Read! Talk! 08:18, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

There seems to be something new, can you please add this lintercathegory to the tool? I have no clue what I should do to fix these errors jet. Lómelinde (talk) 08:47, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

See Wikipedia talk:Linter. This tracking flag should not be added to the table, at least not yet. There is no "fix" for this condition, and the Linter code is generating a lot of false positives at this time. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:34, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Discontent Content Issue 7

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Violence Against Women Act

Although I know you were acting in good faith, I have reverted edits you made to Violence Against Women Act, Domestic Abuse Restraining Order, and Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban. All three edits involved removing an image that you have, separately, opened a discussion at File:Temporary_Order_of_Protection.jpg regarding its removal. Although I may disagree with your reasons for wanting to delete the file, I am willing to work with the deletion process and, if the outcome of that process favors your position and not mine, cooperate with the decision that is made. In kind, however, I respectfully ask that you not jump the gun and delete this content from the associated Wikipedia pages until the discussion you started is allowed to run its course--and in that we will both need to be patient and wait out the process, which will take a week or more. Per COM:CSD we should not attempting the speedy deletion of this file, as it survived a prior deletion attempt, but if the regular deletion process does lead to it being deleted I will be cooperative with that. Again, in kind, I ask you to refrain from jumping the gun on this. Dash77 (talk) 03:44, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Non-minor minor edits

I'm noting that the Firefly Bot marks edits like this one as minor. That seems vastly inappropriate, as it is adding a new notice to a page. It does not meet the word nor spirit of WP:MINOR. The "minor" option is there to tell people that you really needn't look at this, and what would be the point of putting a notice on a talk page if not to have people look at it? As such, I recommend altering the bot so that it doesn't mark such edits in such ways. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 22:11, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

@NatGertler - that's a fair point (although ultimately of limited practical importance). Now fixed for example in this latest edit. firefly ( t · c ) 16:25, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Firefly Bot

Hey, Firefly,

I hope you are having a good summer. I'm running into more and more drafts where the article creator didn't receive a notice from Firefly Bot. I see that Firefly Bot is very active so that's not the problem. So, here's an example for you, Draft:Botswana Beast, no notice to the article creator. But I noticed that this article was moved from main space to Draft space.

Are these circumstances, a draft not created in Draft space, where Firefly Bot would skip giving a notice? I'll bring up other examples now that I'm noticing them more often and maybe I'll learn more about the parameters you've set up for the bot. I'd feel less worried about skipping notices but other admins who delete CSD G13s don't post deletion notices on the talk page of the draft creator when drafts are deleted so frequently Firefly Bot's notice is the only one the editor ever receives. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 04:50, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Hey, Firefly,
I noticed the page creator didn't receive a 5 month notice from Firefly Bot for User:I. E. Sch./sandbox. I usually notice when there are red links to the editor's talk page because that means they didn't receive a notification. This editor has only made one edit so it's unlikely they would have edited their sandbox but I thought I'd ask about it. Thanks, I hope you are having a good summer. Liz Read! Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Asking your opinion

Hello, Firefly. I'm interested in a long ongoing discussion at WT:BAN, about the plusses and minuses of blanking and tagging someone's user page when they are indeffed and/or banned. I noticed yesterday that you indeffed CranberryMuffin as a sock, but you didn't put any template on the user page. I'd be interested in your thoughts about why you didn't template. I assure you that I'm not questioning or finding fault with anything, and there's no right or wrong answer. I'm just collecting various opinions on the subject. Thanks! --Tryptofish (talk) 15:17, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

@Tryptofish - hello! Whether to tag a blocked sock is very much a judgment call. Although the procedures (e.g. here) generally say to tag unless directed otherwise by a clerk or CU, it really depends on whether there is value to the tagging in terms of record-keeping - and if tagging sock userpages gives the sockmaster what they want in terms of building notoriety. Sometimes with VOA/obviously disruptive socks there's little value to keeping a neat taxonomy of them all as they are blindingly obvious and can be blocked on sight, whereas with other cases it can be useful to keep track of which socks are which. In this specific case, I probably should have tagged them, and would have if they came up at SPI. As it was I came across them independently, confirmed they were a sock and blocked through the interface in Special:CheckUser - which doesn't lend itself to easy tagging. I know (and appreciate!) you weren't questioning the lack of tags, but I will nonetheless do so at some point when I have a little more time for editing.
As to the discussion at WT:BAN, I tend to agree with Tamzin's position - arguing about ban tags is a waste of electrons, and such tags shouldn't be required if an admin etc has seen good reason not to place one. :) firefly ( t · c ) 19:23, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much for that thoughtful and informative answer. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:28, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Salt request

Can you please protect the titles Abhilash Pillai (film writer), Abhilash Pillai (writer) and Abhilash Pillai (screenwriter) atleast to extended confirmed. The socks of Mark Jhonny are continuously trying to create this. I had previously requested two times for salting the titles. But nobody took it seriously then. 202.164.137.22 (talk) 12:31, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

I think we can do a bit better than that IP202 - I'll add that string (Abhilash Pillai) to Mediawiki:Titleblacklist so it can't be created anywhere, given the extensive wasting of time here I think that's proportionate. firefly ( t · c ) 17:24, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi. I understand that you're probably quite busy and this probably slipped through. But would you perhaps still have time for the task requested at /Archive 7#Extension of FireflyBot notification to also post to draft talk pages, or should I try asking another bot operator to take it up? --Paul_012 (talk) 15:44, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Linter "missing end tag in heading" error column missing from firefly report

At Special:LintErrors/missing-end-tag-in-heading, there is a list of Linter errors that should be listed on the table at https://fireflytools.toolforge.org/linter/enwiki. For some reason, the list is not linked from Special:LintErrors, but these are errors that need to be fixed. If it is possible to add this column to the table, that would be great. I checked this page's archives and do not see that I have already requested it; if so, my apologies, my memory is not great. See T341369 for some details. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:40, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Firefly:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1100 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

  • Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
  • Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
  • An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.

Protection on Talk:Oliver Emanuel

FWIW: You might consider upping the protection on Talk:Oliver Emanuel to extended confirmed. A recent "participant" (Hercules 765) is just of one of a few socks related to this article that have used their sandbox to game the auto-confirm system (see also Lumpy custard453). Or, I suppose you could leave it as is, and smoke out whatever cache of pre-confirmed socks they may have built up. signed, Willondon (talk) 22:29, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

@Willondon it seems to have died down for now, and yes smoking out XC socks is probably a good idea. firefly ( t · c ) 09:18, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Re: Improvements to the workflow tools used by the Committee - I understand these are cumbersome and can lead to increased administrative burden — this has gotten bad enough I talked about it at length at WCNA this year! @L235 oooh interesting - yes I knew that it was something that some arbs felt had gotten to a point where it was impacting efficiency. If lucky enough to be elected I'm sure there's some solutions we can push for - case management systems cannot be beyond the wit and will of the WMF to provide, or ours to build. firefly ( t · c ) 09:19, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Firefly Bot

Hello, Firefly,

I hope you are well. I thought I'd start a new discussion so this didn't get lost in the old discussion above. We just had a report issued, here, of a G13 soon report for next week that has a higher than average number of expiring drafts. The G13 reports typically list between 150-200 drafts/day and this one has over 300 drafts. When I looked into it, many of these drafts seem to be articles by Lugnuts where it was decided at the Village Pump to move them from main space to Draft space. But when I looked at Lugnuts' User talk page, there wasn't a single Firefly Bot notice despite there being about hundred expiring drafts they created.

Of course, it doesn't matter as the editor is currently blocked from using the platform but it raises the question: Does Firefly Bot skip drafts that weren't created in Draft or User space but moved to Draft space later through draftification? It might explain a few examples where it skips notification if it did. Thanks for any insight you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 20:17, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Liz! Lugnuts' userpage has {{bots|deny=all|optout=all}} at the top, which prevents bots from editing it. :) firefly ( t · c ) 21:00, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Firefly Bot

Hey, Firefly,

I noticed the draft creator didn't get a notification regarding Draft:Garbage feeding. Any idea why? I couldn't find any standard explanation like the draft had been deleted before and recreated. Just checking. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 04:12, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

I also noticed that no CSD G13 5 month notice was posted about Draft:Sara Weiss to the draft creator's (User:Gamaliel's) User talk page. It doesn't look like there was a previous version of this draft that was deleted before that would have prevented a notice from being posted. I usually notice these Firefly Bot lapses when there is a red link to the draft creator's talk page which means that the editor has received no talk page messages and also notice that the draft hasn't been created and deleted before. But this time, the page creator is an active editor, not a new editor, so it seems like an even more striking lapse. Any ideas why this sometimes happens? Liz Read! Talk! 21:31, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
@Liz same with this one - Gamaliel has a "nobots" template on their userpage :) firefly ( t · c ) 21:03, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
As for "Garbage feeding", it seems that it's already gone through the G13 window once, an edit was made, and so the bot thinks it's already left a notification. That's an edge case that I should probably get around to fixing at some point... firefly ( t · c ) 21:07, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

@Wizardman@MrLinkinPark333 - it’s something to do with toolforge and/or pywikibot changes leading to the system that collects the data not being able to log in. my story today

Thank you for standing to become arbitrator! My story today is Canticle I: My beloved is mine and I am his, - the composer, born OTD 110 years ago, didn't want it shorter (but the publisher), - more here. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:52, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for a reply to my cand question. I may discuss it after tomorrow's concert when we will sing the Mozart and listen to Pärt's urgent call for peace played by the strings, - I'm not in the mood before ;) - I mentioned Pärt for a reason, could have been Beethoven as well, in other words: I believe it's time for a fresh look, as we were told 10 years ago. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt you’re welcome. Enjoy the concert! :) firefly ( t · c ) 09:30, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I made it my story today, the text in Mozart's handwriting on that page says "fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam", tough to translate: make them go over from death to life, perhaps. Its very emotional. - I sang in the performance mentioned, DYK? Then, the Requiem was coupled with Bach's Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen, BWV 56. Today, we'll listen to the strings playing Pärt's Fratres (to begin, then the Requiem without a break), and then Da pacem Domine, leading into the Agnus Dei. - We don't just sing a concert, we remember the dead. One of my relatives who died was born on 26 November; when he was a young man he would answer a phone call saying "Mozart". It's a deep kind of joy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:44, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Regarding your reply: "the formerly boiling disputes", you say, and I don't know exactly what you mean, can you please point me at one instance of a "boiling" battle? I met the disputes in 2012, for Samuel Barber, where I opposed for redundancy, but understood within a day that the redundancy serves readers with different needs. A year later we had discussions about the (then new) {{infobox opera}}; look at example Siegfried (opera): I'd describe it as cordial, but the arbitrators of 2013 admonished the three of us a few weeks later, - I have no idea where they looked. Brian Boulton added a compromise to Chopin as a RfC result in 2015. I thought that would settle the disputes, dreamer that I am ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:19, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
Today: in memoriam Jerome Kohl who said (In Freundschaft): "and I hope that they have met again in the beyond and are making joyous music together" --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:04, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

@Bayardaaa you say "you" have a website. As the site is yours, you have a conflict of interest, and are strongly advised not to create or edit the article for the site. Regardless, the website does not appear to be notable (i.e. has not been widely covered in independent, reliable sources), and therefore does not qualify for an article. firefly ( t · c ) 19:36, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Bot and DRN Status Template

I think that your bot has stopped updating the DRN case status template as of 0600 GMT, 18 December. That is the date of the latest update to the table. There are two new cases, one of which should have a status of New, and one of which I closed because the filer didn't list the other editors. The bot is running, because it is identifying five-month-old drafts and notifying their creators, so either it has stopped that task, or there is something in DRN that makes it sick. If the problem is in the content of the noticeboard, it would have to do with the La Salida case that was filed at 2048 GMT, 18 December, which was the first update that wasn't reported by the bot. Linter table needs updates after MW code change

If you have time, the Linter tables like this one need link updates after some MediaWiki code changes. The links that are supposed to go to specific namespaces have changed. For example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:LintErrors/bogus-image-options?namespace=0 used to point to bogus image options in article space. That link is now https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:LintErrors/bogus-image-options?wpNamespaceRestrictions=0&titlecategorysearch=&exactmatch=1&tag=all&template=all and every other link in the table needs similar adjustment.

Also, the Linter error group Special:LintErrors/missing-end-tag-in-heading is missing from the Linter table entirely. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:07, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

@Jonesey95 - link change made! I'll need to do some digging for the additional group... firefly ( t · c ) 13:10, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

2024 Arbitration Committee

The Arbitration Committee welcomes the following new and returning arbitrators following their election by the community. The two-year terms of these arbitrators formally begin on 1 January 2024:

Upon meeting the Wikimedia Foundation's criteria for access to non-public personal data and signing the Foundation's non-public information confidentiality agreement, all incoming arbitrators will be subscribed to all Committee-managed email lists, assigned the CheckUser and Oversight permissions for use in office, and given access to the CheckUser and Oversight queues on the VRTS system.

We also thank our outgoing colleagues whose terms end on 31 December 2023:

Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to retain the CheckUser and Oversight permissions, to remain active on cases accepted before their term ended, and to remain subscribed to the functionaries' and arbitration clerks' mailing lists following their term on the committee. To that effect:

  • Stewards are requested to remove the permission(s) noted from the following outgoing arbitrators, who have not elected to retain them, after 31 December 2023:
    CheckUser: Enterprisey, Izno, SilkTork
    Oversight: Enterprisey, Izno, SilkTork
  • Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to remain active on cases opened before their term ended if they wish. Whether or not outgoing arbitrators will remain active on any ongoing case(s) will be noted on the proposed decision talk page of affected case(s).
  • All outgoing arbitrators will remain subscribed to the functionaries' mailing list, with the exception of Enterprisey, who has elected to be unsubscribed.
  • All outgoing arbitrators will be unsubscribed from the clerks-l mailing list, with the exception of Izno, who has elected to remain subscribed.

Today's story is about Maria Callas, on her centenary. - Aaron Copland died OTD, and Jerome Kohl (mentioned in November) said something wise on Copland's talk, - yes, regarding a soft(er) stance towards infoboxes. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:40, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Did you check out the history of the infobox of Callas? Compare Jessye Norman, Kathleen Ferrier and Jenny Lind. Did you check out the history of Copland? Compare Max Reger, Max Beckschäfer, Colin Mawby (from today's story), and Benjamin Britten (who died OTD). What's the difference? If what you see changes your answer to my question, feel free to change, and ping me. I would like to see a way to avoid in the future hundreds of editors commenting on Mozart RfCs, just to kind of restore the infobox he had in 2006. Hi Liz! Yeah this is an odd one - I created that user account so that Primefac and I could test some oddities related to suppress-blocks (where a user account is blocked, all their edits oversighted, and the account's appearance in logs also oversighted). As the account is suppress-blocked, it appears as "non existent". To avoid confusion / polluting maintenance lists I've deleted the user page. firefly ( t · c ) 09:37, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Coincident with a checkuser block, you reverted a COI question at Nihonjoe's talk page. Would you consider reinstating it? Nihonjoe had responded to the same user's previous inquiry along the same lines. Yngvadottir (talk) 00:03, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

@Yngvadottir - the account in question is a sock belonging to a long-term abuser, and as such I reverted as I would any other LTA account messing about in 'project internals'. That said, Nihonjoe is entirely free to restore the comment if they feel they would like to answer it. firefly ( t · c ) 15:03, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

Thanks!

Hi Firefly,

Thanks for letting me know about the autopatrolled user right. I’ll try to live up to it!

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Happy Adminship Anniversary, Firefly! We are so lucky to have you helping out the project! Liz Read! Talk! 06:43, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

Small question about a block

I looked and looked and couldn't figure this out. A few weeks ago you checkuserblocked Mother of Jabbas with the rationale "BKH / AttackTheMoonNow." What does BKH stand for? City of Silver 18:35, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

@City of Silver - hello! That refers to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Brian K Horton - should probably have linked the SPI in the block summary, but I was working quickly :) firefly ( t · c ) 19:30, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for this. I don't fault you at all for using that shorthand. City of Silver 19:31, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

Firefly Bot

I thought I'd check on the bot and it stopped posting CSD G13 5 month notices on March 8th. Can you get it up and going again? Many thanks! It is providing a valuable service to content creators. Liz Read! Talk! 06:43, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

@Liz - fixed! Was an issue with Toolforge. And thank you for the message above too :) firefly ( t · c ) 22:20, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
Yeah! I'm glad I checked. I have it on my calendar to check Firefly Bot twice monthly to make sure those CSD G13 messages are going out. No problem with the bot but there can be problems on WMF's side. Thank you for fixing the issues. Liz Read! Talk! 01:25, 14 March 2024 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Precious anniversary

Precious
Two years!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:48, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

The bot has stopped updating the case status. It is notifying editors of expiring drafts, but that is a different task. Does the code need to be stopped and restarted?

Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 05:05, 24 March 2024 (UTC)

It's working now. Thank you.
