Hi Favonian. Considering you started IslamMyLoveMyLife's SPI, I thought you might want to check on CalligrapherAR. 2020–21 Southampton F.C. season
Greetings Favonian. I should explain I've been in hospital (NOT recommended during a global pandemic!) and have no idea what my edit to this page has done but I suspect foul play by an I/P The page is of interest as Southampton have now twice lost by a premier league record 9-0! Could I ask you please to have a look?
Take care JRPG (talk) 16:46, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- @JRPG: Congratulations on making it out alive, but if you're a Southampton fan then life may not taste as sweet. If I understand the schematics of the article correctly, then game #19 of the season was lost by only one goal and, more to the point, played in Southampton making it a home game, the preference of the IP as well as the rugby fan – whatever he's doing on a soccer page. Guess your recent experience has taken its toll. Favonian (talk) 17:00, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- It has, I haven't edited anything for months. They played last night and got thrashed 9-0 by ManU, alas equalling Leicester's great away win BBC football
RE: Big Lie ("First!")
On November 20th, you reverted a minor edit I made to the page Big Lie where I included an internal link to Donald Trump's Wikipedia page as an example of this tactic. Up until that point in time, the page was exclusively referring to Hitler's own description of the tactic (as he claimed his enemies used it) and its usage in Nazi Germany. You left this note on my Talk page: "Please do not add commentary, your own point of view, or your own personal analysis to Wikipedia articles, as you did to Big lie. Doing so violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy and breaches the formal tone expected in an encyclopedia. Thank you."
At that time, the entirety of my edit was an additional link in the "See Also" section at the bottom of this article, which was Veracity of statements by Donald Trump. I disagree that my edit was "commentary" or made in bad faith, but I will submit that my link without context was sloppy. I did not have confidence that I could write a section entirely devoted to Donald Trump's embodiment of the "Big Lie", but now the community has taken the lead. As of this moment, editors have reached consensus that the Big Lie is a long-standing, presently-relevant propaganda tool and created an entire section related to Donald Trump's claim of a stolen election. Obviously, then-President-Elect Joe Biden's handlers tried to make this association stick in January and it wasn't a hard sell to a polarized and exhausted nation. The irony, of course, is that Nazi comparisons flow freely from the American Right whenever The Left is in power. The reason I was even aware of the concept of "Big Lie" months before Joe Biden mentioned it was because my conservative father used to talk about it all the time when I was a boy, over 20 years ago. While the Capitol Riot was happening on January 6th, I called him to get his thoughts and he was absolutely devastated...that the election was "stolen" from Donald Trump.
Obviously, I am not a fan of Donald Trump, and there was no small amount of schadenfreude involved in me making the comparison I did on Wikipedia. But I would like you to know that I edited in good faith and did not personalize the topic just by citing his behavior as an example. It was not a tongue-in-cheek citation. That said, I am glad for the greater context of the new revisions others have brought. Hitler might have given "Big Lie" a name, but he was not the first or last to use the tactic, and there is scholarly merit in citing historical, relevant, momentous examples.
I've gone on too long already, but please let me paraphrase an argument we have heard but society won't accept: When the Nazis lost World War 2, the Western World destroyed their image generationally with extremely effective rebuke, schooling and bald propaganda. But Germany was every bit as sophisticated as other "western" societies until the moment we decided they weren't. The tragedy of the success of western anti-Nazi campaigns is that fascism in America has been dismissed as a problem that could only exist at that time in Europe, but it has been with us all along. Names change, places change and organizations change, but the basic tools don't change. I think that discussions of history lean too heavily on labels and not enough on descriptions of tactics. My history education was taught--probably not on purpose--as the opening and closing of books, but our story is still being written: Every new chapter is building from the unresolved conflicts of the past.
I do not generally think that Average Joe should race to Wikipedia every time he thinks something happening in his country happened once in Nazi Germany. Almost every comparison would be ungermane, poorly cited and highly partisan. But consensus is building among serious scholars that the lies told by Donald J. Trump bear uncanny resemblance to the tactics of cult leaders and fascist despots, nearly ending a 245-year peaceful transition of power (an "achievement" that would definitely be on a magazine cover). People have wondered in good faith and bad how far he would need to go for fascist comparisons to stick. To-date, an insurrection campaign against the United States Congress, desecration of the United States capitol, the deaths of police and the sacrifices of his most devout followers are still not enough for many. Impartiality is crucial, but the cows have left the barn. The campaign surrounding Donald Trump's "Big Lie" that the election was stolen put his name in an encyclopedia page with Adolph Hitler.
P.S. I LOVE your Wikipedia page and am also a "mathematician by education". Probably not as learned as you though. I won't be mad if you nuke this wall-of-text. Thank you for all the good work you are doing!

Grammar, or English dialect differences?
You reverted (in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Grey_currawong&oldid=prev&diff=1008846537) my edit which was a grammar correction. I speak US New England, and my original edit (to plural) is correct therein. Are we having a dialect difference? Do you perchance speak some flavor of British or Australian in which the singular verb form is correct? Igodard (talk) 08:04, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Igodard: I should probably yield immediately, as you are a native English speaker and I am not, but my rationale was that the subject of the sentence is "much" and that would usually come with a singular form of the verb, compare "Much is to be done." This, however, is definitely not the blood-soaked hill on which I'll make my last stand, so feel free to re-revert. Favonian (talk) 18:09, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

LTA question
Hi Favonian, I saw that you have some experience in dealing with previous socks from that case. I reported a whole bunch just yesterday because I noticed them after putting UAA on my watchlist a while back (for unrelated reasons). Just wanted to check whether SPI is the recommended action here, or just regular AIV with a link to the LTA report? I don't want to give them any more attention than they're seeking, of course. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 13:03, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- @DanCherek: The socks are so blatantly obvious that I usually just block them without further ado, but now that you mention it, I noticed that zzuuzz recently blocked MyBuddhaa as a WP:HAND of Cromebell, so maybe a CU request should be standard operating procedure. Favonian (talk) 16:47, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- @DanCherek: I often tend to pick these up at SPI more than anywhere, at least at the start of a spree. CUs are never going to stop Nsmutte, however they can often do more to help than you may realise, including picking up the dreg hands like the one you mention, and there's often some GH/BH if you know where to look. I would advise that there is probably no real need to request CU at SPI, nor keep the reports open, unless there's a real rash of them, because they'll probably be checked there anyway. Just try and ensure that a relevant CU is in the loop occasionally. I would recommend AIV as an action - many admins know what they're looking at .. maybe then SPI can deal with batches. But recognition is neither in Nsmutte's interests nor purposes, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Hi Favonian :) -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:21, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Query about vandalism
Hi, Favonian,
Usually vandalism is pretty easy to identify and pick out. But I can't figure out the consistent vandalism over the past few years to TJ page to add Traffic jam to the list. I see you have protected this page twice over edit warring on this and this vandalism has been going on for three years. And the IPs keep stating in their edit summaries, "I can't believe this page isn't protected!" Huh? Why would a random disambiguation page be protected?
Usually these vandalism sprees aren't long-lasting and I was wondering if you knew the origin of this, whether this was one person or lots of people, maybe something they heard on social media? It just seems so curious and meaningless. I probably shouldn't try to make sense of it! Liz Read! Talk! 00:55, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, it looks like some of this activity is coming from IPs in Washington state. Still seem like a peculiar kind of vandalism. Liz Read! Talk! 01:18, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: The case file has a name: WP:Sockpuppet investigations/DeepNikita. This Washington State Heritage moron specializes in acronyms. LCP seems to have returned
User:AHumbleSeaSnail I'm 99% certain this is LouisePhillipeCharles, based on their userpage and activity on other wikis. Tried reporting it on meta but the global lock request page is, ironically, locked CiphriusKane (talk) 17:35, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

Question
Would Template:WikiProject Weather be able to be protected against vandalism as a future high-visibility template? We are getting ready to begin merging WP:WPMET, WP:WPTC, and multiple other weather wikiprojects together, which would catapult this template to high-visibility rather quickly as articles get funneled over. I don't want the template to get vandalized during the process of changing over the thousands of pages. NoahTalk 15:49, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- Done. We don't usually protect preemptively, and 52 is not exactly a high transclusion count, but I trust you and your compadres will rectify this. Favonian (talk) 15:58, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

Help with block evader
Hi. You may not recall this but previously there were issues at Kristin Kreuk's article where an IP address kept combining sources to reach a conclusion that is not stated in them. In December, you were the one who blocked the IP from editing Kreuk's article for a year. Yesterday, another IP added the same content back in. Given that the new IP used the same four sources as the blocked IP (all of which were previously discussed on the talk page), I figure they are just the original IP evading their block. I'm not sure of the protocol on dealing with this. Would you be able to help? Kind regards. Abbyjjjj96 (talk) 11:58, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Abbyjjjj96: Obviously the same person, so I've blocked this IP from editing the article as well. Favonian (talk) 21:06, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

IPv6 range you blocked
Hi, Favonian. Here's an edit from an IPv6 range, 2001:8004::/34, that you have partially blocked for a year. I don't know if the "word" they give is a person (Google has nothing), but it seems likely. I dunno if there's more to be done about this range; partial block from the Sandbox isn't meaningful, I guess! Bishonen | tålk 10:44, 23 April 2021 (UTC).
- @Bishonen: Actually, I just added an article to the existing partial block, but to answer your question: I doubt there's more we can do. Blocking a /34 range for real would be too drastic, even for this notoriously bloodthirsty admin. You did put a naughty idea in my head, though. Would be kind of interesting to see how The Community would react to a partial block from the sandbox. We just had a slightly related case of some bored school kid vandalizing the old sandbox. Upon receiving the standard warnings, the budding little Wiki-lawyer responded thus. Still ended up blocked. Favonian (talk) 16:18, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
- Aah, poor widdle thing. Speaking of bloodthirsty, I think I may start using my old wikimood indicators again, and you are very welcome to do so too (even though you can probably make better ones for yourself). Are you bloodthirsty like Godzilla today? Or merely Rain of Frogs? Bishonen | tålk 09:11, 24 April 2021 (UTC).

New to Wikipedia
Hi! My name is Nick.
I got banned by you from Wikipedia editing on my phone for a year and the reason I got banned was a jumble of letters, and I was wondering if I could get unbanned. I never edited anything on Wikipedia before and I was hoping to make an account; however, the ban prevents me from making one.
Thanks!
100.40.189.181 (talk) 17:58, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- Interesting. The above information isn't sufficient for me to make a decision. Could you provide me with the blocked IP address that your phone used? Favonian (talk) 18:01, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
I confess that I don't exactly know where to find my phone's IP address. I was the last person to edit the page, "List of solved missing person cases." Wikipedia assigned these numbers to me (2600:387:5:80d::80) and its linked to contributions I've never made. I hope this isn't too much of a hassle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.40.189.181 (talk) 18:10, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- The fact that you edited that article a little over an hour ago proves that you are not currently blocked. The range, to which the IP belongs (2600:387:5:80d::/64) was blocked twice back in 2019, but those blocks have long expired. Favonian (talk) 18:19, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- Correction: I should have said the IP, not necessarily you personally. IPv6 addresses (the ones with the many colons) are subject to frequent change. Favonian (talk) 18:21, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
That's strange. Is there any information I need so I can use my phone for editing? I still can't edit because the range I'm in got disabled according to the reason. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.40.189.181 (talk) 18:25, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Reason
Editing from this range has been disabled (blocked) by an administrator in response to abuse.
Editing by unregistered users from this IP address range has been blocked. In rare cases, usually in response to serious abuse, logged-in editing may also be blocked. An IP address range may in some cases be used by many people; if you believe that you are not the person this block is intended for, please follow the instructions below:
I don't have an account, but I think the block was intended for me because I found some informational mistakes on the page and I couldn't change those after my first edit. I don't have a VPN. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.40.189.181 (talk) 18:40, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- I'm at a loss. The quoted message doesn't state the IP (range) blocked, but I assume it's the one you gave above. Having run out things to try, I must refer you to WP:Help desk. Favonian (talk) 18:50, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Favonian. The article Muawiyah I was moved to Mu'awiya I following a discussion on the talk page. Non-responsive IPv6
Back in February, you blocked an IPv6 here. The same individual is still making edits with no explanation, under new addresses (presumably DHCP server giving new addresses). The major change is that these edits now come with the edit comment "nothing mush" (sic). Still no response to requests that they identify why they are deleting stuff - I suspect the editor has no idea about messages on talk pages, since each time it's from a new address. Could we block the IPv6/64 to get their attention? Something like this range? Tarl N. (discuss) 01:33, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Tarl N.: I doubt that they have any attention to be got, but now they are blocked for a considerable length of time. Favonian (talk) 12:24, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

HC? (Long shot)
Given the positions taken in this discussion, and the behaviors outlined here, do you think it's possible that the 2-month-old editor involved (Westerhaley) could be HC? If so, should a CU get involved? Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:12, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Beyond My Ken: It's certainly an editor who has a lot in common with HC, diving directly into Operation Barbarossa and proceeding to Axis Powers. A certain disdain for Churchill is also noticeable. I believe it is him, though I'm a bit hesitant to swing the hammer. CU would therefore be a good idea. Favonian (talk) 18:12, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Can you please help me expand this page? I can't find the original user for this person. NASCARfan0548 ↗ 16:44, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- @NASCARfan0548: It's Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CalebHughes, so I guess the case file should be named accordingly. I could definitely contribute, but it'll be a while before I can fit it in. As you can tell from his latest manifestion, I come highly recommended. Favonian (talk) 16:55, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- Favonian, How do you know it's Caleb? NASCARfan0548 ↗ 16:56, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- If you trawl through the archive, you'll find several IPs from the relevant region performing the characteristic vandalism on the usual category of articles. There are other instances, where the cross-over between this activity and his "main line" of making up college football "rivalries" comes to the surface. Favonian (talk) 17:00, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- Favonian, How do you know it's Caleb? NASCARfan0548 ↗ 16:56, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- NASCARfan0548 and Favonian, I believe CalebHughes and this LTA are indeed separate, with CalebHughes imitating the original vandal. Other than the college football rivalries stuff, Caleb will often go to admins asking for protection of target pages of this LTA, and to make things even more confusing, has started to participate in the vandalism himself in order to get the pages protected faster (e.g. see Special:Contributions/Ethanian), but the Louisville LTA activity has been going on for much, much longer. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Smash It Down!/Archive, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Willie Bin Laden/Archive, and Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Hi-Blow/Archive, all years before Calebhughes entered the scene. It can be hard to tell who is who, but I do believe that CalebHughes and the Louisville LTA are both currently active, with Caleb usually sticking to user accounts and the LTA usually sticking to just IP's. 2001:8004:0:0:0:0:0:0/34
Hello. I happen to notice that several IPs on a range you partially blocked persistently removes random redirects and self-reverts as part of their... well, at this point it's getting annoying, editing pattern. Looks like the replaced content pertains to music subjects. Refer to this filter. Just wanted to bring this to your attention. Jalen Folf (talk) 06:37, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- @JalenFolf: Much as I hate to admit it, there is really nothing I can do to stop this. Blocking the /34 range sitewide will result is way too much collateral damage, the disruptive edits are spread over pretty much the entire range, and partial blocks obviously aren't feasible. Sorry! Rangeblocks
Hi, how do you carry out a rangeblock, and how do you find the block log for somebody who was rangeblocked? WP:BLOCK mentions rangeblock several times, but doesn't explain any of it.
I have a serial offender who is an IP hopper; their contribs may be found by inputting "2A00:23C7:DC84:8B00:*" at Special:Contributions - but if I input 2A00:23C7:DC84:8B00:* at Special:Block, I get "There is no user by the name "2A00:23C7:DC84:8B00:*". Please check your spelling." I am 100% certain that they have been rangeblocked before, more than once, so I want to give them a longer block duration - but I can't find any block log entry - if I could find that, I could at least ask the previous blocking admin.
I'm asking you because yours is the most recent name that comes up when I search Special:Log/block for the string "range". --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:25, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Redrose64: The usual (horrible) syntax for IPv6 ranges is "2A00:23C7:DC84:8B00::/64", and its block log does indeed contain one item. "/64" ranges are very frequent targets of blocks per the explanation given in WP:Blocking IP addresses#Shared and dynamic IP addresses. Favonian (talk) 19:35, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
