The missing references

[edit]

I saw your message. Weird- behaviour, This was the edit that caused the mischief. I have restored the references and added the two lines you need in order to see them. Short of other evid-ence I suspect that it is a software bug in the Visual Editor - image widget. So I have posted a comment on Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback so the experts can check it out.

In answer to your question. As a rule of thumb- one reference per paragraph and one more for each surprising fact. Have fun editing- you are doing everything else right. --ClemRutter (talk) 16:09, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You are so kind to help me. My passion is Latin American fiction by women, and I am to make English speakers more aware of their work by translating pages and creating new ones. But I am so raw and new in this space, full inexperience and desire. So your encouragement and help means the world to me ClemRutter. Thank you. Dorothy Potter Snyder (talk) 11:53, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Dorothy,
Clem told me about the problems you were having. I've filed a report at phab:T133475, and I'd love to have any other information you can share. For example, do you remember clicking on any of the references? (They look like [1], and in the visual editor, you'll see a box that looks like this if you click on them.)
It looks like you've found the Spanish Wikipedia, which has some good articles on women authors. You might also look at the Portuguese Wikipedia for other sources of inspiration. You can also say hello at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red if you're interested in meeting other Wikipedia editors who also write articles about women. It's a great group and very friendly. User:Rosiestep, User:SusunW, and the other editors there would be happy to hear from you. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 01:42, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Dorothy, it is nice to meet you. I am so happy to learn that you are interested in Latin American fiction by women! This is definitely an under-served area on the English Wikipedia. As User:Whatamidoing (WMF) mentioned, you would be very welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red. It is a friendly place. At Women in Red, we focus on creating new articles. Our scope is (a) women's biographies (real women; fictional women) and (b) women's works (the books they wrote, the paintings they painted, the conferences they convened, the schools they started, and so on). We also work on lists such as this one: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Books. I'm glad we met and hope to see you around. Cheers, --Rosiestep (talk) 04:45, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Dorothy Potter Snyder, as Rosie says, welcome to WP and feel free to drop by Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red. We are a pretty helpful bunch over there. If you have questions, just post them on the project talk page or mine and I'll try to help. I too have worked on a bunch of articles from Spanish WP but know that the sourcing requirements are different. English WP, requires at least one source per paragraph, as was noted above and that source can not be a self-generated source. I have often found it is easier for me to translate sources and create my own article than to try to source a translation of the article on Spanish WP, due to the lack of citations. More than happy to help you in any way possible. Whatamidoing (WMF) thank you for the link up to Dorothy. SusunW (talk) 16:19, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have commented on User talk:Onel5969 page on each of the references provided and I have found 4 that I consider to be rock solid, I suspect that user is a monolingual and hadn't read the contents of the references provided, a pity because he is a prodigeously hard worker. @SusunW: Could you slide over to that page and if you agree with me- propose that the article is transferred to mainspace. --ClemRutter (talk) 18:39, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
ClemRutter I have absolutely zero idea how AfC works. Only ever submitted 3 articles there and was told never to do that again, by the editor who approved them. She is CLEARLY notable. I find many, many, many sources [1], [2], [3], [4]. Can I edit the draft? And I did comment on Onel5969's page. SusunW (talk) 19:28, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dorothy Potter Snyder the problem was not that she is not notable, but rather that the sourcing was problematic. On your drafts, use the pulldowns in the edit window. Click on Cite and a template will appear. Fill out the information as completely as possible so that you do not have bare references. Once you have input and saved a reference, you can reinsert the same reference by clicking on its name in named references. Avoid self-generated sources, as well as sources by someone with a vested interest, i.e. fan sites, publishers of author's work, etc. In this case, there were numerous newspaper articles and an entry in the Ministry of Culture's encyclopedia that referenced most of the material you had. I just input the sources. Please feel free to ask if you have questions about what I did and I'll try to help. Your file is here Mónica Lavín. Also note that I input categories, defaultsort instructions and WikiProjects on the talk page. These are critical items for notifying wikiprojects of new files so that they can help you reference and if necessary save a file from deletion. Please feel free to continue working on your file :) SusunW (talk) 22:31, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing, I added her to List of Mexican women writers so she wouldn't be an orphaned file and tied her article to the Spanish one using the edit links button to the left of the article. These steps help tie her in to other articles in the encyclopedia. (Please add any other writers you create to their appropriate country lists). It is a lot to remember and a lot of protocol so truly, feel free to ask. Had I not had mentors whe I started, I would have walked away many times. @ClemRutter and Whatamidoing (WMF): I went for bold, as suggested since Onel5969 said they had washed their hands of it. Thank you both for bringing it to WiR's attention. SusunW (talk) 22:44, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Dorothy Potter Snyder and SusunW: We have two positive results- a solid new article and we made new friends too. Hasta luego.--ClemRutter (talk) 23:51, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @ClemRutter, SusunW, Rosiestep, and Whatamidoing: and deep bows to you, thanks for your help and friendship. I have learned a lot thanks to your patience and help, and though still wobbly and a rank beginner, I will keep going. Thanks for helping me bring an important and notable woman writer into English for people to learn about. I will join you over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red, keep learning, and hope that one day I will be knowledgeable enough to encourage others as you have me. Thank you.Dorothy Potter Snyder (talk) 01:56, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad that we'll get to keep you. What's your next goal? More work on Mónica Lavín first, or are you ready to start another? WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:52, 26 April 2016 (UTC)][reply]
@ClemRutter, SusunW, Rosiestep, and Whatamidoing: I'm sorry I've been absent. A big editing project ate my time and brain. My next goal is to amplify the Mónica Lavín article, and then get to work on Spanish short story writer, Almudena Sánchez.Dorothy Potter Snyder (talk) 13:05, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Dorothy Potter Snyder[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Mónica Lavín. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! A tag has been placed on Draft:Steven Blier, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The draft on Steven Blier had so much unneutralness i had to tag it for deletion.WP:SPAM and WP:NEUTRAL should be followed even if you think it wasn't unneutral (just to be safe since some editors like me may see it as spam and tag it where it will likely be deleted).Thank you for your draft Josalm64rc (talk) 00:06, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dorothy Potter Snyder (talk) 01:09, 15 August 2019 (UTC) I don't understand what you mean about a lack of neutrality. Perhaps you are confused by the quotes from the New York Times? They are not my quotes, but those of music critics of Mr. Blier's work. He is a very important artist in contemporary vocal music. I am a fairly new Wikipedia writer and have worked very hard on this draft. Can you recommend my next steps, please?[reply]

(by talk reader) This sandbox is your draft? Why use third person instead of first person? This still fails WP:FAKEARTICLE. Look at other user pages and discover what it is to describe yourself as a Wikipedian rather than advertise yourself as a subject? Chris Troutman (talk) 18:35, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@HickoryOughtShirt?4:I have eliminated most of my biographical information, removed related citations, and changed to the first person singular. I mistakenly thought User profiles included information about the user outside of Wikipedia. Perhaps this meets standards now? Dorothy Potter Snyder (talk) 19:19, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dorothy. The sandbox mentioned above is a perfect example of a good user page. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 00:13, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@HickoryOughtShirt?4: Hi. I feel on the verge of tears because I do not understand: Which sandbox are you referring to? Your own User Page or my edits? If my edits to my User Page are okay, how do I remove from Sandbox and return to my User Page? I regret I simply don't grasp what to do.

I am sorry you are becoming stressed about this and I hope to be more clear now. Per Chris troutman comment, I have copied the sandbox I approve of onto your user page. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 05:12, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@HickoryOughtShirt?4:Dear Vastly-More-Knowledgeable-Friend, thank you. I wasn't sure if you meant my edit User profile or your profile. I didn't know if I was supposed to remove it from my Sandbox, or... I am still pretty much a newbie and I'm really trying. Just FYI, I thought user profile meant you all wanted to know what my preparation outside of Wikipedia was for editing or writing articles.
