Hi. Here's how to navigate Naver News Library:

1. When you click that "Obituaries" source link, it'll pop up a window with pictures of mouse buttons. Press the "X" in the upper right to close it.
2. Then it'll open a window with the OCR'ed text of the article. You can click the "X" in the upper right to close that too.
3. The actual scan of the article is the blue-outlined section of the newspaper at the lower left.
4. You can zoom in by rolling your scroll wheel up or by double-clicking, and move the newspaper by clicking and dragging.
5. Go Se-tae's obituary is the very left-most one in that blue-outlined section, with the "116" in it. Starts with a black triangle and his name in hanja 高世泰 (Columns run vertically and go from right to left).

Unfortunately I can't find any confirmation about Hong Jong-o. I.e. no further newspaper reports explicitly confirming he's alive (sounds like you found the same Yonhap article I did about Choi Yun-chil going to the 2012 Olympics, which mentioned Hong at the end [1]), but no hits on '"Hong Jong-o" obituary' either. Oldest living footballer

FYI, Arthur Smith (footballer, born 1915) is not the "oldest living professional footballer" as you claim phere - he is the oldest former player whom played in the Football League, as confirmed here. It's possible that foreign players are still alive, though I agree that it is very unlikely for someone born 1909 like Zoltán Szaniszló. GiantSnowman 15:40, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Ah, my mistake, thank you for pointing that out. At some point George Haigh was declared the oldest living professional footballer, but of course he was superseded by Smith, which is where I think my wires got crossed. Hi Paul. Hope you're well. As far as I can tell, every single person who competed in track & field at the Olympics now has an article (not counting that bizzare triathlon at the 1904 Games). Regarding Antonio Alberino

Are you sure that he just did not show up to say Hey i'm alive? How can we be sure that there are no older alive footballer than that English one born in 1915? Wikipedia reflects its sources. If a source is considered reliable, and there is no contradictory information, then we go with what the source says. To do otherwise would be considered original research. It may be possible that he is still alive and you may personally prefer to presume what you may, but Wikipedia can only represent what actual, verifiable sources say. Actually I cannot even access that link where I am, so I looked it up on a different website. Turns out I was mistaken; I thought I was looking at the SSDI record, but I was actually looking at the Massaschusetts Death Index. The SSDI record only has June, but the Massachusetts Death Index has the full date at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VZ55-8SM. You have to sign up to view it, but it is free. Bertus Brandsen

Hi CP, can I ask what your thoughts are on this? Both of Bertus_Brandsen's EN and NL Wiki pages would have you believe he's a centenarian, but this link suggests he has died in Amsterdam sometimes in the 2000s or 2010s. Though it's vagueness makes me wonder if the webmaster is assuming he died sometime subsequent to when he was last known to be alive. Do you think safe to mark as deceased? Could really go either way. I think it's safe to mark him as deceased because a reliable source is making that claim and it is not up to us to question the reliability of particular pieces of information that it presents unless that information is contradicted elsewhere. You may find later that another reliable source claims that he is alive and that you get reverted, but that is how it goes. Canadian Paul 12:45, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Joan Barry

Find a Grave is a reliable source, so please don't revert my edit. It's highly unlikely that Joan Barry is still alive and if she was, she'd be well over ninety years old. She died on October the 1st, 2007. 60.240.8.249 (talk) 21:46, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

As was explicitly linked when you were reverted, Find-a-Grave is "almost never" a reliable source and I see no reason to make an exception here, especially, as I pointed out, that this is a perfect case of it being a circular reference to original research on Wikipedia. Regardless of how "likely" it is that she is still alive, Wikipedia's policies on the biographies of living people are clear that a person should be considered living (or possibly living if over the age of 90) unless there is verifiable evidence in reliable sources that they are deceased. Since Find-a-Grave is not reliable, it cannot be used here. We must make absolutely certain that anything printed in biographical articles is true and verifiable, because we know that these biographies can have real and potentially serious effects on actual individuals. I and I'm sure others greatly appreciate the attention to good sources and verifiable information...so thanks. It seems the Find-a-grave death date and some other info (but not everything mentioned on the Find-a-grave entry!) is available now from public government records, specifically: the U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims, 1936-2007. The most direct reference to this info that I know of, is exactly here at the paid site [Ancestry.com]. I'm brand new here so I don't want to go whacking pages that have gone back and forth, but I'm more than willing to help for this small issue however possible. I'd attach the text here of the actual SSA record showing all the data but as a total newbie, I think that's also probably not best. In the SSA record, the maiden name, birth date, birthplace, and parents are exactly as the article states. There is a SocSec claim date of 15 Nov 1968, and a death date of 1 Oct 2007. The SSN listed (publically available data for those deceased, used by banking and others to prevent criminal forgery) is 526-02-0304. The final name (also mentioned in the wiki but nowhere sourced) is Mary L Baker. This info fits statements by her son Stephen. It's somewhat troubling that surname Seck is not mentioned in the record, but that is not unheard of. So we can safely say, either this death date is correct or else some of the other info already in the current wiki page is incorrect. There is also the possibility that the US record was forged by someone - which would also not be unheard of and would be quite challenging to prove. There was a note that the FBI had the SSN - it might be possible to corroborate. Psychesy (talk) 02:10, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Olympics page

Hi,

I noticed that your page User:Canadian Paul/Olympics used to be a comprehensive list with country, year, etc but now is just a bunch of links and the history is gone. What happened to the page? Did it get deleted by accident?

The original purpose of the page was to list a group of individuals who were notable enough to have Wikipedia pages, but potentially obscure enough that WP:BLP-type vandalism might go undetected for long periods of time. It was (in theory) easier to check "related changes" than to add every page to my watchlist. I wanted to make it a bit interesting as well, hence all the extra details, but it sort of spiraled out of control and started edging dangerously close to violating WP:WEBHOST and WP:UPNOT, if not crossing the line. So I transferred the list to a personal web page, to preserve the hard work, and then replaced it with just a list of (most of) the names, so I could retain the original purpose of monitoring the names (which, thorough "related changes", is now MUCH easier without all the extraneous information). I have no plans to delete the "possibly living" page, since there isn't as much extra information there, and it would take more time to reduce it to "just names" then it would be worth at this point. Cite sports-reference

Hi Canadian Paul, I see that you reverted my edit with the edit summary "This template is for use in external links only, as it does not provide sufficient information for an inline citation and diminishes the quality of the citation" By that, you refer to my use of Template:Cite sports-reference. Your rationale is incorrect, as this template is specifically designed for inline citations (note the "cite" bit in its name) and it'a Template:Sports-reference that is designed for use with external links. The difference between what the template produces and your use of a cite web template is that you show some of the "MADmen" who have compiled the Sports Reference database. Whilst the four have led the work, as it says in the footnote on the linked page, there were many more authors who have made substantial contributions. To me it's questionable whether a database should have authors listed. If it should have authors listed, why not integrate them into the template? That said, there is a discussion about this particular aspect on the talk page of cite sports-reference where an editor argues this shouldn't be done. In summary, the underlying rationale for your revert appears to be based on a mis-understanding on your part, and if it ought to be done "your way", I would say that those changes should be implemented via amending the template if you could establish consensus for doing so. There was a discussion on this topic in the past between myself and another editor, which required a WP:3O that sided with the idea that a detailed citation should not be replaced with a citation that contains less information. It may be an old and small consensus, but it is the best one we have got right now. Furthermore, we need not use a template simply because it is there for our convenience. I don't see much value in taking away information about the citation when we indeed know that it will disappear in the near future. I suppose we could start a new discussion about it somewhere, but where? As you pointed out, the discussion on that template talk page is pretty stale and, moreover, SR will be shutting down eventually, so it seems as if the whole discussion would soon be moot in any case. So I don't see any misunderstanding on my part, rather the necessity of shorthanding essentially this discussion into an edit summary while making vague reference to the language in the template that could, I admit, be confusing. So I apologize for the mis-communcation.

Regarding whether the database should have the authors listed, I would ask, why shouldn't it, when a lot of hard work has gone into compiling the database and its contents are protected by copyright and it helps us better identify the source that the material came from? Again, it could be integrated into the template (although I lack both the skills and interest to do so), but why bother when the site has an upcoming expiry date? It is not about doing it "my way" (one would think that, as we are both experienced editors, there could be a little more assumption of good faith than that here), but about what has been done in the past based on an (albeit very weak) consensus has been.

Finally, while we're chatting, could you please also be carefully about not using the "birth date and age" template in the infoboxes of possibly living people? Since we don't know whether or not they are alive, we can't verify that they are the ages claimed by the template and since most of them are likely deceased, it doesn't make much sense to list them as being a certain age. Hi again, thanks for your considered response. I hope I can address all the issues raised by you:

• If you feel that the author information is useful, and others agree (and I see that you had User:Darkfrog24 concur with you), then we should seek a bit more input and if we do get consensus, it's very simple to amend the template (I'd be happy to do the work).
• Do you want to draft a note to that effect? I suggest that the template talk page is the appropriate location. We can then inform others through a notice to a few WikiProjects (e.g. Olympics, Sports, etc).
• The fact that SR will shut down is irrelevant as the content will, at the very least, still be accessible via various archive services.
• When I used the term "misunderstanding", I was referring to you saying that "this template is for use in external links only". That is most definitely not the case; it is a citation template for inline referencing.
• My used the phrase "your way" did not in any way imply bad faith. If it came across like that, please accept my apologies. I still can't see why it implies bad faith, but little subtleties are sometimes lost on me as English isn't my first language.
• I accept your point that removing authors that you manually added is not to be done.
• I accept your point that adding an age calculation to people in their 90s is probably not a good idea (unless we have some more recent references about them). Bringing up that point is timely, as I'm working my was backwards through the history of the European Rowing Championships and I'm currently working on the late 1940s and early 1950s (i.e. people born in the 1920s or 1930s). I'll address the SR template issue when I have a little more time (busy week this week), but I did want to throw in a quick response to acknowledge that I received the message in case you see me spot editing a thing or two and think I'm ignoring it. As for the birth date and age template, Category:Possibly living people is used only for those who would be 90 years or older and have had no update within the last 10 years or so (I'm paraphrasing a bit from the category plus relating my experience in using it, as I frequent it often), which is to say that anyone born in the 1930s should be fine to use the BDA template. Okay, I've drafted a note. I've tried to keep it concise, in the hopes that people can review the previous discussions, but it might be too concise, so I definitely think there's room for improvement here:

"I wanted to raise the issue, and form a consensus, regarding the idea of adding author information to this template. This stems from two discussions, one back in 2016 and a second more recently, where editors replaced a more detailed citation with the template, which I reverted in both cases because I felt that it provided less information than the full citation I had provided and thus lowered the quality of the citation. In the first case, I had a third opinion agree with me, and the second case has led to this discussion, which means that there is yet to be a strong consensus on the issue.

@Schwede66: has suggested (and I concur) that a proposal should be raised here to add author information on the template, which would address my objection to using the template instead of a regular citation. The question is what author information to include: Justin Kubatko is often raised as a contributor, but he is involved in running the site, not contributing the data, so he’s responsible for presentation rather than content. My suggestion (and what I have been doing when I use a regular template) is to list the group leaders noted at the bottom of each page (Hilary Evans, Arild Gjerde, Jeroen Heijmans, and Bill Mallon – the latter of whom is the founder). Unlike some of the other information in the contributors and sources section, this information is still up to date (full disclosure: I’m one of the contributors to the data), and is unlikely to change, so it would make for a stable template. Therefore, I am posting this here to garner a consensus on the issue of including author information in the template, and what the nature of that information should be."

Regarding Ove Nielsen, I'm pretty sure he's still alive. He seems to be well-known in Lillehammer and there's nothing in the local media about him having died. That said, I have reached the free search limit on the Gudbrandsdølen Dagningen site. Maybe you could have a look whether there's something more recent about him on their website. And even if you were stalking me, another set of eyes would be good as my process of creating rowing articles is semi-automated (mail-merge) and things do go wrong (e.g. the word "born" got dropped the other day for some strange reason, and I didn't spot it myself). Here's another one for you. I think that in the 1920 coxed pair, the Belgian team is made up of three rowers. The official Olympic record is of no help as the team members aren't listed by name. The Belgian Rowing Association (Federation Royale Belge D'aviron) reckons that the Van Den Bossche brothers were the rowers and René Van Damme was the cox; SR lists Guillaume Visser as cox (or more precisely, as the third team member). Visser, according to the Rowing at the 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's coxed four article, was one of the rowers prior to WWI. Given how many European Championships medals Visser brought home it seems difficult to imagine that the Belgian Rowing Association denied him the 1920 honours. What do you reckon? And another one. Malcolm Shaw died in 2014. Middle name, death date, and death location are all referenced in the article. The death notice says that he was 68; that puts his birth year published by Sports Reference out by two years. I suspect that Jean Cipollina is the correct spelling for the Italian rower; SR has him as Cipolina. The Italian surname does usually have a double 'l', and both FISA (not that that means anything) and the official Olympic report concur that it should be Cipollina. Hey Canadian Paul, let me add something related to Sports-Reference here as well. In September, I curated Sports-Reference profile links in Wikidata by looking them up on the SR athletes index. Besides lots of outdated residual profiles which did not get deleted during one of the past updates, I think I have spotted two duplicated persons in the latest version of the database:

1. kh/viktoriya-khristova-1 and wr/victoria-wright-1 seem to be about Victoria Wright
2. sh/nimrod-shapira-1 and ba/nimrod-shapira-bar-or-1 seem to be about Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or

Can you please have a look whether something needs to be merged on SR side? Besides these two cases, I have not found any other (suspected) true duplicates. Wikidata has links to around 86% of all SR/olympics profiles meanwhile. —MisterSynergy (talk) 15:07, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Here's another one for you. Bettine Jahn is listed as Bettina Gärtz. Firstly, her given name is mis-spelled. Secondly, given that she was already married when she became world champion her common name is her married name. The maiden name for Silvia Fröhlich is missing: Arndt. Spotted her competing under that name in 1978 in Karapiro; FISA lists her as Fröhlich-Arndt but Volker Kluge doesn't show her maiden name in the second edition of his book Das große Lexikon der DDR-Sportler. No reason to preserve an impetuous remark

I realize you probably won't be able to understand this, but let me repeat myself. Exhausted at the end of the 1960 Olympic marathon, Arthur Keily, who had a long and extraordinary career as a marathon runner, made an impetuous remark that an inept reporter was stupid enough to include in a story. It was simply sour grapes, possibly momentary. There was nothing notable about that remark, it was not well founded, and Keily may have regretted it immediately, but your zeal to preserve it is very unfortunate. It diminishes the man, in the unfathomable absence of any reason to do so. In my opinion, your intransigence doesn't speak well to your own judgment. Aside from that, I appreciate that you authored the article in the first place because he certainly deserved to be remembered for his ability and efforts. I just hope that Keily didn't read it before he died at almost 95 years old, two years ago. These are the fundamentals of Wikipedia and the suggestions I have given to help you make the changes you want, yet you continue to ignore them and choose to try and push forward your own point of view instead. Refusing to follow Wikipedia's processes and procedures just to get your own way is, as I said in my edit summary, disruptive editing that will be brought to WP:ANI. SR database tweaks

Given that you have a connection with Sports Reference, I wonder whether you could initiate some changes to their database:

• Karl Leister (rower) (D:Q51955037) was a gold-winning cox in 1912. The second footnote on the page Rowing at the 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's coxed four explains the situation. Leister is missing on the SR database.
• I've spotted the page D:Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/P1447 and am working my way through the list. Some of those issues arise with editors stuffing things up, but some individuals do have duplicate entries on Sports Reference. Would it be possible to address those and get the duplicates removed?

I'm sure I'll come across other things that can also be mended. If this is the right way to initiate improvements, I'll let you know about it. If it's not the right way to do this, please suggest what can be done instead. Schwede66 19:47, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

I can definitely pass on changes and they should be corrected quickly in the underlying database. Unfortunately, SR takes a very long time to update their website based on that database (last update was in October or November 2017), so it may take a while for the changes to actually appear, but they will get there eventually. I'll message them about Lister and, as for the duplicates, if they are duplicates in the underlying database, then that's an easy fix. If they are SR-only duplicates, however, I'm not sure what can be done, since SR generally doesn't clean out their outdated pages (I presume that these duplicates get created when the underlying database changes the name of a competitor; instead of migrating the old page, SR just creates a new one and deletes all links to the old ones, but does not actually delete the old page itself). That is interesting background indeed and it explains why there are duplicate entries for some people. MisterSynergy, let me draw your attention to this as this violates the single value constraint (D:Q19474404) for Sports Reference IDs (D:Property:P1447). Based on the older entries not being updated, it should be possible to distinguish the older from the newer entries and if so, Wikidata could identify the deprecated entry. Thanks for ping. Most of these issues were indeed somehow known to me, although I didn’t see an explanation as detailed as the one by Canadian Paul. SportsReference has great detail about Olympic participants, but the technique of the website is … rather crappy unfortunately.

As far as I know, it is not always easy to identify the most recent version of the duplicated profiles. Even if one can do so, deprecation would not be the correct consequence as the identifiers are still technically valid. If one prefers the most recent identifier with ranks, one would solve lots of usability issues (only one value will be delivered to data users), but the constraint violation will not be gone. Interestingly we are discussing a new “single best-rank value” constraint type these days, in contrast to the current “single (non-deprecated) value” we have today; this would help here a lot…

Anyways, regarding SportsReference.com there was this announcement in 2016 (?) that they will move their data from sports-reference.com to the IOC. Canadian Paul, do you happen to know whether this plan is still valid? —MisterSynergy (talk) 21:19, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

@MisterSynergy: Yes, the data is still planned to be moved to the IOC, but the integration has been slow. It will happen eventually, but I couldn't even give you an estimate of when. @Schwede66: Regarding Karl Leister, one of the individuals behind the SR data did some in-depth research with some of the organizations involved with the regatta and the clubs that participated. He confirmed that SR is correct and the IOC is wrong: not only did Leister not participate in the event, but there is no evidence that he even traveled to Stockholm. 4. Salah El-Dine Nessim possibly died January 20, 2007, but I can't prove that the individual in the obituary is the basketball player: [3]
5. Satoshi Matsui died August 1, 1995 according to Japanese Wikipedia, but the source is offline. Probably reliable though.
6. Louis Van De Goor, Émile Laermans, Gustave Vereecken, Pierre Van Basselaere, Raymond Gérard, René Demanck, and Edward Risk Allah are all deceased, date unknown.

Age templates

Hi Paul, What do you think of this? Isn't it inappropriate to use years and days for someone who is not known for their age? I'm hesitant to revert this myself as this user has a long history of edit-warring whenever I tidy up after him. DerbyCountyinNZ ^{(Talk Contribs)} 04:06, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

I know we had a discussion somewhere about when and where it was appropriate to use that template, so the user may actually be abiding by the consensus... when I have a bit more time, I'll take a look and see if I can find where it was discussed (there's a lot of different talk pages it could be on). That said, if the current consensus allows that kind of thing, it might be time to establish a new consensus, and I would support limiting its use to just pages where the day count is actually of encyclopedic value, which I don't find to be the case here (he reached 110, what difference does it make how long he lived after that if he didn't set any longevity records?). Looks like you've done it properly. I normally just delete the offending revisions, but in this case I'll leave them there for easier review since there's an active investigation. I blocked that user a while ago for copyvios and started a request for a formal review, but nothing ever came of it and the block expired, so if he hasn't done it since, then the only thing left to do is let the investigation take its course. @Lugnuts: 1928 is correct: here is an extensive biography of him in Turkish, but the DOB is on the front page. The data provided by the different sports within "Sports Reference.com" actually comes from different sources, hence the discrepancy, but 1928 is definitely correct. Okay thanks for updating that, I found quite a bit of ones that might be living from the teens/20s that are listed as living or possibly. Now while this person is born in the 1930s, this was odd. I was looking up unsourced BLP's, and found this actress Ann Baker who was oddly updated 2 years ago as being dead with no source at all. So I just removed this (its odd as she is still listed under the cat living people, and nobody noticed it till now!) and I noticed she is listed as dead on another wiki. (Problem with some wikis though is I notice they have DOB's from random places that might not be accurate) Wgolf (talk) 05:20, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

• /~\ = a
• |\| = n

Sumiko Mizukubo actress who apparently lived from 1916 to 2019

Okay I apparently edited this article a while back and it appeared on my watch list Sumiko Mizukubo, it says she died in 2019, which someone put a source for, but I'm not sure if she lived that long or not. Question on Kalle Anttila

Hi CP, maybe you could take a look into an issue with Kalle Anttila, a Finnish wrestler and twice Olympic champion, if and when you have time. User:DorothyIan made unsourced changes of death date/place along with a story of his emigration to Canada, which I reverted. This happened twice, first time on 9 June, and second time on 23 June, note that the details of the change are different. Next, this editor has started a discussion on my talk page; the question is whether the Wikipedian Kalle Anttila is the same person as their great-grandfather, who they explained emigrated from Finland to Sudbury in Canada, but still competed in wrestling for Finland. John Nicks runs the now disband Santa Monica Figure Skating club in the 70's. Jean Yun skated in Santa Monica Figure Skating Club and was he's student. John Nicks took Jean Yun to the Olympic, World, & Grand Prix. Hi. Do you have any evidence that Yun is notable per WP:NSKATE? If so, then they can be re-added to that page with evidence of their notability. For example, if Yun really competed at the Olympics, then that would be notable enough, but I do not see any evidence of that. Otherwise, I presume that Nicks had many students, not all of whom can be mentioned on Nicks' page. Alas, I lack the class to catch the reference, but I can at least confirm that the 2013 source was incorrect. There was a Facebook posting showing him alive (with a picture) in 2015, so the new obituary seems correct. Although the source came out yesterday, so there's no way that he died on the seventh. Help with birth/death dates?

Hi - I could have this wrong, but I think you have helped me in the past with researching birth and death dates. If I have that wrong I apologize (though if you know of someone else who does this please let me know). I am trying to find birth and death dates for Blake Williams (basketball). He went to Lawton High School in Lawton, Oklahoma and played in college for Oklahoma State from 1944 to 1948 so probably a birthdays around 1922 (though he played during WW2 so it’s possible he served in the military before college). A user recently updated that he died in 2002, after living in Fort Collins, Colorado. Can you help me with birth and death dates and places? Oldest people List of the oldest living people etc

Hi Paul,

You mentioned here that you were thinking of having a look at the Oldest People article and its current "consensus" for inclusion criteria. In a related issue, what was a slow edit war over the inclusion of Maria Kononovich among the oldest living people (and to a lesser extent, related articles) stepped up a day or so ago. Hi Schwede66. This is correct: he died September 4, 1997. A large French death index was released recently and this was one of the many hundreds of new data points the Olympic database added from it. It's also searchable at https://www.familysearch.org/search/. Unfortunately, this new data won't see the light of day on SR or the IOC for a long time, so unfortunately I cannot back it up with a source good enough for Wikipedia. In any case, at least with more recent deaths, I'm trying to use the index to find full obituaries - easier to do if you know where to look already. I'll be adding a few rowing obituaries momentarily. One that might interest you that I am having trouble finding is for Jean-Pierre Souche: he died January 10, but I cannot locate an obit. Hi Paul. Hope all is well with you in the current climate. On Kenkichi Saito's article, an IP has removed the claim that he died during WWII, with a source of their death date being in 1960. However, it's just a bare cite of "Kenkichi Saito, The Asahi Shimbun", but it does look consistent with the article on the Japanese wiki. If you have a moment, are you able to help with this one? Unfortunately I don't have access to the actual article, but I don't see any particular reason to doubt it unless someone wanted to pull a very specific hoax on both the Japanese and English Wikipedias for some reason. Our database doesn't say where we got that he died during World War II, so I suppose this claim is just as reliable as Sports Reference in this case... sorry I can't be of more help. Another death

It is with a heavy heart that I have to report another death. After four years of uncertainty, the point has now been reached and life support for the Olympic part of the Sports Reference website got turned off. There will be many of us who knew this day was coming but it's still a shock that it has finally happened. "We have closed the site permanently" is what it simply states in lieu of an obituary. Hello C-Paul. I was wondering if you could help find a birthdate for Robert W. Matheny, who was an All-American basketball player for Cal Berkeley in the 1950s. • Pretty sure that Temple Tucker is Temple Layfayette Tucker, born March 28, 1936: [4]. If it is that guy, I believe he is still alive
• Pretty sure that the basketball Frank Ehmann was born December 23, 1933, which I got from public records. So not good enough for Wikipedia, but it may help you find more. Also still alive as far as I can tell.
• Sam Lifschultz died December 25, 1951: [5]

I'm having more trouble with Joe Capua... I'll look into it a little deeper sometime soon, but it is possible that "Joe" is a middle name or nickname, which may be throwing things off. Canadian Paul 05:16, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

• I'm certain that's the correct Temple Tucker reference as well; he'd be 22 at graduation, and as of July 2017 he was still alive. I'll add it to his article
• Ehmann is tricky, and I tried finding additional sources but couldn't come up with anything
• I've added the DOD source to Lifschultz' article
• 'Joe' being Capua's middle name or nickname is highly likely. A lot of athletes back then weren't known by their first names. I'll try to find more on him, too

This aligns with a Hassan Mustafa Booker, born on September 1, who has lived in Los Angles, Tulsa, and Annapolis, which seems like the basketball player. His YOB varies in the public records, but it's probably 1975. Unfortunately, I don't have a source good enough for Wikipedia, but hopefully that gives you something to work with. Hi - can you help me find death info for former American Basketball Association player Hank Whitney? Someone had added a death date of April 5, 2020. Iowa State tweeted an RIP message in May and a typically reliable Facebook group called Peach Basket Society posted on April 6 about his passing - but I can’t find an obit anywhere? I know it's not the most important thing in the world, but I'm of the same opinion as you that it resembles one of the supercentenarian articles from 7-8 years ago, padded out with far too many unnecessary facts, and it bothers me that only two or three editors have basically 'unilaterally' decided what is to be considered worthy of being in the article. Hi Paul, some user named User:UpcomingPurse has created an article titled YSN Fab. Another user put the speedy deletion template for an instant deletion and User:UpcomingPurse already removed it. It is under "CSD G11". The spam article has too many spam edits and failing GNG, and he is not a notable rapper. So for my request please speedy delete YSN Fab under "CSD G11" and he is not a notable rapper and it has too many spam edits. This is an urgent request, please talk to User:UpcomingPurse to never create the article with too many spam edits and failing GNG because he is not a notable rapper, and finally speedy delete YSN Fab under CSD G11 and avoid re-creating the same YSN Fab article and never made threats against IPs. I am 100% positive I did not edit war and secondly User:UpcomingPurse has abruptly created YSN Fab article with too many spam edits and tell User:UpcomingPurse to never made threats against me and never make attacking comments to IPs. Thanks for the heads up. Looking at it, and seeing where the IP is from, I would be pretty surprised if this was wrong, but I could not find anything to verify it. I've alerted the team though, so we'll look into it. Probably safe to put Würth in PLP though, since the last confirmed update was in 2012, which is close enough to the 10 years plus this new development. Also, speaking of original research, I think that this may be crossing that line a little. No doubt you are correct, but we should probably go with what the sources say even if they have a tendency to be off in some of the older cases. Canadian Paul 03:48, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

@Canadian Paul:, Assuming you were referring to the change in category, I've changed it back for now. The ESPN/Cricket Archive sources are becoming very depreciated as time goes by though, sadly. I think they've given up on doing any further research on many of the first-class cricketer profiles even though the answers are out there. 10 years ago it was a decent source, now I think their automated age counter is just very misleading if anything. A heads up for you if you ever go looking for McClintock's fate – she was living in 1991 in Muswellbrook, New South Wales as Florence Bowe. Can't trace her after that unfortunately. I wonder if it would be worth contacting ESPN cricket or Cricket Archive about these limbo profiles? Do you know anything about these sites – is it Cricket Archive who do the original research? @Jkaharper: I was actually more concerned about Ancestry, mainly because she is potentially living (even though I agree that those sites are probably wrong), so it was more about BLP concerns. There is an element of that it's not up to us to individually judge the reliability of sources, but perhaps one day it would be worth bringing those sites to WP:RSN. @Canadian Paul: Yes I agree, and I have considered it in the past. I understand why Wiki doesn't like Ancestry, but I have a problem with the way they blanket out some sources entirely, rather than looking at things on a case by case basis and recognising that they can be useful and indicative in some instances (the Al Besselink case springs to mind). Where Ancestry ties in to another source by means of matching dates etc. it works as a good way of verifying exact dates, locations so in the case of Florence McClintock, the newspaper article I pulled up from 1940 talks about her being recently married to Mr. George Bowe, then Ancestry gives the exact date with the certificate itself. One day I'll fight this corner but I'm not confident I'd win right now. The upset on the Besselink talk page demonstrated just how strongly some people feel against any kind of non-academic or journalistic sources! --Jkaharper (talk) 12:53, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

One more that may not have come to your attention. Enrico Perucconi, listed in the Possibly living on English Wiki... in January his Italian Wiki added a death date of 15th July 2020 with a location of Morazzone. All I could find online was a Press Reader article here. On page 44 there's an announcement for a man named Enrico Perucconi with his funeral held on 17th July in Morazzone, with a date underneath of the 15th (presumably his death date). @Jkaharper: Our Italian contact was unable to confirm it. It's probably true, but the Italian Olympic Committee also put out a "happy 96th birthday" message after the alleged date of death, and he's not sure if that's automated or not. More than info than anything, but I've begun to work through all the Olympians from the first games onwards, adding in refs & updating DOB/DOD, etc. Up to 1908 at the moment! Always great to read the research notes on Olympedia, esp. when the original entry was "J Smith, dates uknown" becomes "John Smythington-Brown, born x..." complete with info about his life. Lost count of how many articles on WP had zero refs, including people who won medals. And thanks for your hard work too - it doesn't go un-noticed. I actually have a huge list of Wikipedia pages that need updating with new information, but I only get around to denting it, like, once a year. Interesting that you mention the "J. Smith"s of the Olympics, because we have a big update of his French cousins coming very shortly. As for Aspin, the information for John is very outdated (at least seven years, probably more), and Robert is correct. Eventually Olympic.org will come around to updating it, but who knows when that will be. For what it's worth, Robin and his current dates are correct as far as I know. You are correct - Thage Brauer did not compete. Unfortunately, I don't have a RS on hand, as this comes directly from his son. His son said that there was a newspaper notice to this effect around the time of the Olympics, but I don't have access to it.

As for Hudson, there are few like him out there but, sadly, most are cases of "obscure competitor died in obscurity." Then there are those like Murray Riley, who ended up being somewhat of an anti-Sydney Hudson... Canadian Paul 03:52, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Oldest living New Zealand Olympian

Hi Paul. Your Twitter feed has Guy McGregor as the new oldest NZ Olympian after Ngaire Lane's death. There's no DoD for Reg Douglas yet and he was born 3 months earlier (unless you have info I don't!). On a side note (for the Olympic mysteries file) Hector McLeod (b. 1920) was selected for the 1952 Games but did not compete and Jean Adams (nee Nelson) (b. 1932) was selected for the 1952 Winter Games and also did not compete. I would suspect he is alive, since he does not appear in the NZ Death Index, but I have no proof, and since it's possible he moved and died somewhere else, I don't list him as living. Sorry, me again! Looks like the profiles of two Swedish athletes from 1920 have been merged on Olympedia. Georg Högström (pole vault) and Knut Alm (cross country). I'm wondering how you can regard one unsecure-profile at Geni.com-profile over a national sports-organisation (Norwegian Skating Association) obituary of one of theirs sports-athletes ? Please see this archived obituary in norwegian https://web.archive.org/web/20140531213609/http://www.n-s-f.no/filarkiv/admin/2012/minneord_2011-11-06.htm which is written by a former figure skater and a long time general secretary and statistician also contributed to Olymadmen ( http://www.olympedia.org/static/about ) at Olympedia. The above-linked archived obituary were already used in the article, but not for her death-date-reference, didn't you even take a look at it or didn't you understand what it said ?

Do you have any involvement with the Geni.com-profile to maybe correct that one with the given sources here... ? BTW. If I had seen any change of this date to what you changed it to in the EN:WP-article i would contact Arild Gjerde who signed the archived obituary through Facebook to correct it back since he at least has been a member of Olymadmen at Olympedia, since I know him a little through norwegian speedskating events. Yes, that would be much appreciated! If all the changes can be centralized in a list somewhere, then it makes it easy to pass the information on. Alternatively, Olympedia has a feedback section... if you send it that way and just say I sent you there, it will catch my attention, but then the whole group gets it as well (basically skipping the step of me passing it on and eliminating the chance that I forget/get busy). His death certificate states that he was formerly known as "John Guy", which would tend to explain why nobody has been able to trace him easily through the Scottish records.
