Hero
[edit]Hello, Bzuk. I'm a bit confused about your response to the fair-use problem with File:Screen shot Hero.png. If the image commentary you've added to Hero is so inconsequential that you insist on burying it in a footnote, then why do you feel it necessary to include the non-free image in the first place? If the production or use of the crash scene is particularly significant, then it deserves to be discussed in the main text of the article. If not, then there is no encyclopedic reason to use the image. (See Wikipedia:Non-free content#Meeting the contextual significance criterion, and in particular the part referencing WP:DUE and WP:BALASPS. We don't include images, non-free or otherwise, for purely decorative purposes, and simply adding a token commentary to such an image doesn't bypass the "significance of understanding" criterion for fair use.) —Psychonaut (talk) 19:40, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- The reasoning behind the use of a note to the reader was to give further information as a question about the use of the scene was made. The image is not there for prettiness, but shows a key scene and how it was created, using a set that was rigged for explosion. That's simply the way I wanted to provide the information to the reader. The note is attached to the caption and is fully referenced. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 20:00, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for your quick response (but please let's keep the conversation in one place). I understand and accept that the note is adequately referenced. I'm just saying that it seems strange to put the commentary in a footnote, suggesting it is relatively unimportant, when the use of the non-free film still is predicated on it being (a) an important part of the movie, and (b) necessary to understand the accompanying commentary. Do you see what I mean? —Psychonaut (talk) 21:29, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
I have used the option of a note to provide an expanded commentary which still is useful to the reader to understand the complexities of staging a dramatic scene. The scene is one that was documented in a number of reference sources dealing with aviation films. The use of a full-scale Boeing 727 in an era when CGI dominates lends credence to the choices made by the filmmakers to create a realistic scenario. Both the content in the "production" section and the photograph and its caption viewed together give a more fulsome description. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 22:39, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- Unless the reader/viewer sees the fireball that was involved, the actual consequences of the lead character entering a stricken airliner is not evident. The descriptor of how the scene was shot gives a greater appreciation of the sequence. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 22:50, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks!

Speedy deletion nomination of Canadian Aviation Historical Society
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Canadian Aviation Historical Society, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. March Madness 2017
[edit]G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.
For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

I have a rewrite of the article on the Foster mounting nearing completion in my sandbox - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Soundofmusicals/sandbox which may or may not be of interest. In common with other articles I have worked on from (more or less) scratch like this I am basically writing the text first and will be adding the verifiability/links etc. later - appreciate if you could add any comments you might have, including any possible outright errors you might notice, either to my talk page or the one to my sandbox. Most welcome help of all would be usable references, anything you think I should read etc.

Replaceable fair use File:Alexander P. de Seversky (Victory through Air Power).jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Alexander P. de Seversky (Victory through Air Power).jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. Request for advice in dealing with problematic users
[edit]Greetings and felicitations. You seem to be more engaged with the Wikipedia community than I, so I am coming to you for advice, hoping that you can at least point me in the right direction(s).
Recently I have had two edits of mine reverted by two separate users who may not be acting in good faith, or at least in the best interests of Wikipedia. I also have had run-ins over the years with a significant contributor to this encyclopedia, but let's deal with the others first.
Most recently, user 32.218.43.144 reverted an edit as described here, and then blanked their Talk page. Here are the user's contributions. Since the edit is back to the way I wanted it (something I just discovered) there is nothing really to be done, but I'm left wondering how in the future I should handle this sort of case, especially given the lack of response and the deprecating "too lazy" comment.
The second case regards user Drnarendrajadhav, who reverted an edit as described here. The article in question already has a Autobiography cleanup template and really could use a Copy edit cleanup template.
The last case concerns user Beyond My Ken, with whom I see you are familiar and who in my experience over several years is one of the two main editors of New York City articles as well as various others, so I tend to run into him/her every so often. In my view BMK often reverts edits, and can be a bit insulting when doing so. S/he also seems to often disregard the MOS and follows his/her own view of how a proper article should be. E.g., that "Further reading" sections should not be stand alones, but what I call "non-sections" with the title in bold, and that refimprove templates belong in the "References" section (e.g., 1, 2), rather than at the top of the article as per MOS:ORDER. If I knew BMK's philosophy on what constitutes a proper article, I could work with/around that, but s/he has not posted it.
I also find the lack of edit summaries troubling, and we disagree on the placement of images. (I prefer that images be in, not above, the sections to which they are relevant, and that in wide browser windows (mine are 1600 pixels) images not intrude into the appendices, neither of which seem to bother BMK in the least, something that has apparently caused him/her to revert several of my edits.)
In the (distant) past when I tried to discuss BMK's reversions of my edits (e.g., here and especially here, which also speaks to BMK's attitude towards the MOS) s/he has not been very...helpful. Which seems odd given the cordiality with which I see BMK treating other users on his/her talk page.
Do you have any suggestions, other than what I have been doing, which is avoiding editing any articles to which BMK may be paying attention, or making only very non-controversal edits?

The Fokker Scourge article
[edit]I am having a few problems with an enthusiastic but at times very dogmatic editorial colleague on the Fokker Scourge article. If fact, things have reached a pass where some second opinions might be useful. The specific question he is hammering at the moment is that we shouldn't ever say "No. 1 Squadron RAF" (in spite of that being the usual way of putting it) but "1 Squadron" (on the grounds that the "No." is redundant). I wouldn't object to an occasional omission of the "No.", if only for elegant variation, but he has been going right through the article wiping every instance and claiming that "Wikipedia is not a source" (which is true enough, but nothing to do with the case). The gentleman concerned has been making dozens of other (mostly very pettifogging) changes to the article - a few have been genuine improvements, and most at least acceptable alternatives but some of which have made clear text obscure, even meaningless. I have let everything he has done that is at all acceptable stand, but the really bad ones I've had to change - usually with a new version rather than a provocative revert.
I was wondering, if you have a moment, if you'd like to have a little look at the Fokker Scourge talk page (go straight to the bottom if you like) and tell me, either here, on my talk page, or even on the talk page of the article if you want to actually buy into the discussion, if I'm being totally unreasonable and should just give up. This is (for a WWI aviation article) quite a high traffic one - and I'd like to leave it in reasonable shape. At least readable, and plain in meaning (two things I value far above brevity for its own sake). --Soundofmusicals (talk) 01:01, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

File copyright problem with File:Xmas Ornament.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Xmas Ornament.jpg. However, it is currently missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation.

Speedy deletion nomination of File:SNCASE SE-2010 Armagnac.pdf
[edit]A tag has been placed on File:SNCASE SE-2010 Armagnac.pdf requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F10 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a file that is not an image, sound file or video clip (e.g. a Word document or PDF file) that has no encyclopedic use.
2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting
[edit]As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Season's greetings
[edit]Bill -
Thank you for remembering me this holiday season. This year many Californians found a white Christmas from ash fall. My family has been fortunate to experience nothing more than smoke, although my son was evacuated from his home. His home survived, but his wife's parents lost their home. This photo shows California rising from the ashes, and I hope your new year may hold similar success. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Thewellman (talk) 23:30, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
