Impossible-to-find Cantonese vegetable
Hi, I just saw a vegetable listed in a Vietnamese cookbook with a Cantonese-sounding name of suit-nei-hoong. The cookbook is bilingual so the Vietnamese translation given for this vegetable is "cải dưa" (literally "melon cabbage." A Google search turns up only 2 hits for this romanization, one of which is a HK menu that gives 雪菜 (Mandarin "xue cai." Any idea what the hanzi for "suit-nei-hoong" is? We may need an article on it. Badagnani 05:29, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
A further search shows that it may be a special cultivar of Brassica juncea (var. Crispifolia). Badagnani 05:31, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Could it be 雪里红? Badagnani 05:32, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Looks like it might be "potherb mustard," popular in Zhejiang.[1] Badagnani 05:34, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:TiananmenSquareIMincident2.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:TiananmenSquareIMincident2.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:15, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello
I was the person who editted the Feng Shui page. It was a joke and the vandalism would have been taken down as soon as I sent a cached version of the page to a friend. I applaud the speed with which you caught it, though. That was very impressive. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.171.158.196 (talk) 15:05, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Bianyifang
A tag has been placed on Bianyifang, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per speedy deletion criterion A7.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}}
on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.Toddst1 21:32, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Roasted duck
Do we have an article on Cantonese roasted duck? I think there's one for roasted goose, but isn't roasted duck an important Cantonese food? It's mentioned in the Five-spice powder article. Badagnani 22:56, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think I will make one. Benjwong 04:53, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
But I asked if this is an important Cantonese food. I thought I see these ducks always hanging in Cantonese-style restaurants. Badagnani 05:58, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- We got roasted goose article already. I think there are endless number of things that can be considered important. For the time being, I am avoiding it. If you can believe it, I have a massive to-do list. Benjwong 06:01, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Tiananmen square immolation incident
Hi. I just tagged the sentence on propaganda in the PRC regarding this incident as staged or somehow fake as dubious because it lacks citations and wanted to give you a friendly notice. Since you're apparently the person who added the statement, would you know where reliable citations regarding that claim can be found? Alternatively, checking the main page on the controversy turns up a bunch of controversy and it might be better to refer readers there to maintain neutrality. Thanks.Ngchen 20:29, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- We agreed on keeping the event as neutral as possible. Thanks for the heads up. Benjwong 16:03, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Hi, can you add anything to Pepper steak? This dish has long been popular in the U.S. and is attributed to Chinese cuisine, though I'm unsure of its exact origins. I'm not sure if it has a Chinese antecedent. Badagnani 09:26, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
- Not at the moment. I might get to it later. Benjwong 16:07, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Can you tell what the "Chinese tomato" is? The characters are given on p. 201 here. Badagnani 10:14, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
- I really question those English names. Well at least is a good starting point if you are interested in vegetable classifications. Benjwong 16:54, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- That should have been Eggplant, not chinese tomato. Benjwong 18:23, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, what are the characters? This book is historically interesting because they show the very origin of rendering Cantonese ingredients and recipes in English over 100 years ago. Badagnani 18:45, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- That is "short" "melon". That is a cantonese name for eggplant. Benjwong 18:47, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
短瓜? The first character isn't the same. Badagnani 19:00, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Removal of {{pui}} tags
Please do not remove these tags. It is not a way to avoid deletion of an article, nor to indicate that a potential problem has been resolved. The tag clearly states "If you don't want the file deleted, please provide explanatory information about the copyright status of this image. Please do not remove this notice while the question is being considered." In much the same way as AfDs, these are to draw attention to a debate listed centrally, so removal could potentially stifle debate - both arguments for or against. Ohconfucius (talk) 10:07, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
- Ok I thought once a fairuse rationale or license is inserted, that tag can be deleted. Benjwong (talk) 23:50, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

I have done some cleanup of the article, which had and still does to a lesser extent, poor sentence construction. It still suffers from weasel words. Please go through my changes and see that I haven't changed the meaning of anything from the sources that you cited, which I do not have to hand. I'm not tagging it just to be mean. I'm trying to get people to put sources on what looks like a good article. PhGustaf 07:05, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

- Ok no prob. Benjwong 07:22, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- Well, you do seem to know what you're talking about. It gave me a thought -- most of us non-Asians see Asian spiritual artifacts mostly when we visit Asian-owned places of business -- there will be a shrine on the floor with incense and a snack for the bodhisattvas, a jade frog with a coin in its mouth, and a gilt statue of Ho Tei. I know that if I rub Ho Tei's stomach, I immediately become a favored customer. (And I know why, and I do it to be friendly, not to mock.) An article about these objects might be a good thing. But hard to drag up references for. PhGustaf 07:51, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- I unfortunately don't have much input about the frog. The Ho Tei thing is true. I think a buddhist religion expert may have more info on that. Benjwong 17:36, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:TFvictory3.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:TFvictory3.jpg.

Sorry about removing "Danjia dialect" from "List of Chinese dialects"
Hi, sorry about that. I wasn't vandalising, I was trying to clean up the Yue table. It was very messy, dialect families were misplaced, names were wrong, transliterations were wrong. I have now made them all standard pinyin transliterations. I did my research from the "Yue Language Dialects" page in the Chinese Wikipedia (here, http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/粵語方#.E7.96.8D.E5.AE.B6.E8.A9.B1). If you feel I have done any mistakes on the English page please let me know. Contributor168 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Contributor168 (talk • contribs) 08:05, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Ok thanks. That was the dialect most obvious to me. And stood out when I saw it deleted. Benjwong (talk) 08:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Please do not remove references to Hou DeJian's eye witness testimony on Tiananmen 89 protest. - The wording is a bit too much. Don't you think to say "The most reliable account" raises some questions when it is the same example used again and again by pro-Beijing political groups? Since you are not looking for 3rd party sources to support this as "most reliable", can you at least reword it please. There are at least a million youtube videos all saying they are the most reliable. Benjwong (talk) 21:49, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Replaceable fair use Image:Raymond-Chow.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Raymond-Chow.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 20:39, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Translation help?
Hi Benjwong - I noticed you're fairly active in Chinese topic areas, and was wondering if you could take a look at the characters seen on the side of the plane in this photo, and
- reproduce them
- transliterate them (Chiang Hung?)
- translate them if possible
Thanks in advance for any help! --Rlandmann (talk) 10:24, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
- It is 江鴻. The translation is possibly "river swan" or somebody's name. But I really don't know if people put their names on planes. Benjwong (talk) 16:02, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks very much for your help! "River Swan" is a more likely meaning than a personal name; there was a related design from around the same time named "River Crane" (Chiang Hae). --Rlandmann (talk) 19:32, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
If you want to put a photo of douhua at Tong sui, there's a better/close-up photo at Douhua. Badagnani (talk) 18:46, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- Please help yourself with whatever pic you like. I just didn't want to deal with the code error showing. I have no preference at all. Benjwong (talk) 18:48, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
I wouldn't personally select douhua as the main depiction of tong sui. I'd probably show something with longans and snow fungus. Is that luk mei? For some reason, we don't have an article for that, and it's not explained at Tong sui. Badagnani (talk) 19:19, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- I am definitely taking it easy on tong sui topics for the time being. Benjwong (talk) 19:32, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey. You recently added a reference to the Golden Shield Project article. Do you also know the pages where the book states that fact? Checking a fact in a book without a page reference is almost impossible, unless you read the whole thing... Key to the city (talk) 22:47, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey
I feel we may have got off to a bad start on the Chinese orthography pages. I apologise. You are obviously passionate about the subject and put a great deal of effort into these pages. It's an interesting topic for me as well, and I hope we can work together to improve these articles going forward. I assure you that I am quite non-partisan on the topic, and have no interest in promoting either one of the orthographies. I am more interested in how their usages differ and the interaction of the different orthographies with the cultures of different regions such as mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 04:41, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- O don't worry, you can complain about my edits all you like. If I wasn't ready for the challenge I wouldn't be here. Is unfortunate that so much of the history is "unpopular" and "negative". People want to see a neutral view, when in fact everything in the PRC is controversial. Benjwong (talk) 06:27, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Sweet potato soup
A tag has been placed on Sweet potato soup requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Sweet potato soup
It's nothing personal, I just caught it while perusing around through "Recent Changes". It didn't appear notable enough to warrant its own entry so I tagged it. I noticed that you already got a {{hangon}} up, so if you can provide the appropriate info that's fine. Gromlakh (talk) 03:44, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:AshitaNoJoePS2.jpg

Speedy deletion of HotCha
A tag has been placed on HotCha requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.

Flickr
Hi! Errrm...can you teach me how to use Flickr to upload pictures and things? I found quite a few useful pictures, but I have no idea how to process and apply it to the article ^^". Thanks a lot in advance! Dengero (talk) 05:15, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- 1.) Yeah first you need to find a picture that is "self-taken". For example this image is taken with a Canon branded camera. Without the camera data, the image may be scanned from a magazine etc and violate licenses. So please find one with a camera data. So it won't be good.
- 2.) Afterwards the picture must use a specific license. These are good. Everything else is not good for wikipedia.
- English: Attribution Creative Commons (BY)
- 中文: 姓名標示 Creative Commons (BY)
- or
- English: Attribution-ShareAlike (BY-SA)
- 中文: 姓名標示-授權分享 Creative Commons (BY-SA)
- 3.) If all the license requirements are good, login to Commons. Then use this web script.
Does this make sense? If you have a picture in mind, I'll be happy to walk you through. Benjwong (talk) 03:00, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- I got my eyes on this one[2]. Is it compliable? Dengero (talk) 03:44, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

- Nope. If you look on this page for example, you can filter it by licenses. The first one and last one is acceptable for wikipedia. Very few pictures use the right license. I usually send a flickmail to people, asking them to change licenses. Benjwong (talk) 04:33, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

If you use this web script, it won't even let you upload with that license. Alot of people on flickr assume that license is ok. But it is not, to my understanding. - Nope that license does not work for Joe. Please see #2 above. It has to be BY or BY-SA. The "public" only means you can see it in public. Also there are alot of websites that can generate pinyin and jyutping. I can do this one, it would be helpful if we can find people to put it in templates. 雕
I use "雕" (as in hawk/carve, yeah?) when writing simplified. I'm not aware of 彫 being used in modern Chinese... Is it not a Shinjitai? --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 00:11, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- All the computer programs and translation sites say 彫 is the traditional. But shouldn't that be "Ancient traditional"? I see random people use it over the web, so I can't tell if it is entirely phased out. At least we both agree it is part japanese. What I am trying to see is whether all software programs are making a mistake. That there is no simplification. And 雕 is the same everywhere for traditional and simplified. Benjwong (talk) 00:24, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- btw, sry to butt into this convo, "雕" is eagle, not hawk. Hawk is "鷹". Just thought I say ^^" Dengero (talk) 00:34, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- Now it's my turn to say sorry to butt in! True, 雕 is eagle in standard simplified characters. Ornithologists in China don't like this usage, however, and prefer a (non-standard) simplified version of this character: 鵰.
scandal
Hmmmm, the recent scandal about Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan, Cecilia Cheung and Edison Chen has hit hard in Hong Kong and people are pouring in to edit thier pages. I know its real and stuff and after seeing those photos personally, even I could dismiss the artists claims of photoshopping and doctoring. After that, a news report said the police have CAUGHT a person who stole "an artist's" (edison) personal computer, and charge him for stealing and defamation etc etc. Which made me believe it more so. Anyway, how can we put all this into appropiate words and how on earth are we supposed to find references? I didn't revert a link on Bobo Chan's page, but I don't really think its appropiate to put a semi-porn page on wikipedia >.> Dengero (talk) 00:26, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- I changed the references, but nothing as descriptive as the previous wiki editor's image references. Probably we will never find any reliable sources as descriptive as those pictures. But they look like someone's random upload, which doesn't make it any more real or fake. I think overtime more info will come in. Benjwong (talk) 03:42, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:ShanghaiFilmGroup.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:ShanghaiFilmGroup.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Unspecified source for Image:ShanghaiFilmGroup.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:ShanghaiFilmGroup.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:49, 1 February 2008 (UTC). If you take a look at any featured portals, you can see that every single one of them has "read more" caption. Maybe you need to modify the section so that it is there. OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:55, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, I noticed you tried to help add it before. Some major portals like WP:FILM has it. Many don't. The ones that do, have codes integrate and don't require manual updates. We are short on editors the portal. So we have to keep it simple. Benjwong (talk) 03:08, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Question
Hi, I recently obtained TVB's edition of red packets (lai si). It has Gigi Lai, Charmaine sheh, Myolie, Kevin, Roger, and quite a few other artists in it. I was wondering, would it be possible to upload them onto thier respective pages without violating any WP regulations? Like, photocopying them, or taking pictures of them? Dengero (talk) 08:00, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- If you take it yourself (with your camera) you can upload it to Wikimedia commons. I am hoping the pictures don't have frames etc. Benjwong (talk) 16:03, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- I uploaded like you mentioned and pasted the picture on Fala Chen. If everything is alright, I can upload the rest. Thx again! Dengero (talk) 05:29, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- And while you're on that, your fantastic pinyin skills are needed in Kate Tsui and Mandy Cho =D You are so great lol. Dengero (talk) 05:36, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- I am doing the pinyin by the computer. Is repetitive task. Anyway Fala already has a picture with good license. So she is ok without. If you took those pictures yourself, it should have camera data. Without camera data on the pictures, people will think you got it off the web somewhere and probably delete. Benjwong (talk) 05:40, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- Also if you are taking the picture. Try to cut off at the head and arm pit area (without the TVB logos). Benjwong (talk) 05:42, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

How to add the camera data? Dengero (talk) 05:43, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- All digital cameras do it automatically. Take a picture, then upload it to computer. If you don't touchup with photoshop or other graphic software, it will keep the camera data. Because this is a celebrity picture, it probably matters. See how this image has camera data at the bottom. Sorry for being picky, but you are very close. Benjwong (talk) 05:47, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- It's ok, I don't mind being picky/picky-ed on. But if I have to modify her by cutting her off on the shoulders, the camerca data will be lost. Is there a way to enter manually? Or should I take the chance and defend my picture when the licence police comes in. Dengero (talk) 05:51, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ok. I was thinking you just take the picture from head to arm area.... adjust it by holding it. Don't bother with Fala pics though. That will save you time for 1. Benjwong (talk) 05:54, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

hmmmm hey lol. I want to ask, about external links on chinese artists, which rule do they exactly break according to here? Cause....I've actually been on this website for many years....and everything inside is good content, no advertising, no promotion, all purely informational and discussion about an artist. So..perhaps an exception can be made to the traditional guard on the external links section? I also must note, this site actually started in 2001...which is actually earlier than the offical site itself lol. Just like to ask your opinion ^^" thx! Dengero (talk) 11:00, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Edison photo scandal
- "An u(n)named female staff member at Baidu posted the images"
Maybe I'm missing something: I don't see this in the sources. All that is said is that Baidu has not been sufficiently proactive in removing the "romantic pictures". Could you please point out where the above statement is said or implied? Ohconfucius (talk) 02:16, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ok I see why you can't find it. ;) You need to go back to the edit I made before you rearranged it here Look for the sentence: "A staff member, who refused to reveal her name,". Is definitely at the website. Benjwong (talk) 05:32, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- The source says "A staff member, who refused to reveal her name, at Baidu's public affairs department said the company was asked to make an apology yesterday, however, the authorities haven't made decision yet." Nowhere does it say that the female staff member was responsible for posting the pictures on the site, like you wrote. If indeed that's the part of the source you are referring to, I think the line "An u(n)named female staff member at Baidu posted the images" would be incorrect. The whole criticism of Baidu is that they did not do enough to stop the spread of the images (ie did not take them down as soon as they were posted), which is quite different from saying an employee put them up on the site. What you wrote may be potentially defamatory of Baidu, and should be removed. Ohconfucius (talk) 06:49, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- You are absolutely right. I am going to change it. Benjwong (talk) 07:07, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Tianya citation from SCMP:
- Could you copy out the article for me, please? I just want to check that the assertion about Tianya ("On February 22 the photos were also posted on the popular chat room, Tianya.com, and have been viewed nearly 20 million times a day by mainland Internet users.") is correct. I have a small doubt because the WSJ said "Yet the incident has been widely discussed on mainstream Chinese Web sites. On bulletin board Tianya, a discussion thread called "Edison Chen and Gillian Chung's Bedroom Photos! Is it true or not?" has been viewed nearly 28 million times, and features nearly 155,000 posts. Following the crackdown by Hong Kong police, some people in the territory have even turned to mainland Web sites to share the photos." It does not say how long the thread has been around, but the thread's "being viewed 28 million times (in total)" is not the same as the photos appeared on 22 February and have been viewed 20 million times a day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ohconfucius (talk • contribs) 08:53, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

The scandal surrounding the celebrity sex photos has captivated the Chinese-speaking world and many other nations.
Newspapers, internet sites and television stations have provided extensive coverage of the scandal, and Edison Chen Koon-hei's apology yesterday was run on most of the world's top news sites.
Expatriates in Hong Kong have reported repeated requests from friends back home for links to sites showing the pictures and information about the stars.
Many popular celebrity gossip internet sites have published the nude pictures and run daily commentaries on the saga.
Tens of thousands in Taiwan forgot work to watch yesterday's press conference. All Taiwanese stations broadcast it live.
Interpreters were on hand to give simultaneous Chinese translations of Canadian-born Chen's English confession. Cable stations reran segments hourly.
The steamy photos have become the talk of Taiwan, especially as they coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday.
Mainlanders were also fascinated. Popular websites such as Sina.com, Sohu.com and 163.com carried Chen's press conference live and offered a word-by-word translation.
Meanwhile, the photos posted on the popular chat room Tianya.com have been viewed nearly 20 million times a day by mainland internet users.
Mainland police have warned internet users they will be breaking the law if they access the pictures or pass them on. Police have arrested 10 people for producing, selling or buying some of the photos.
- There is no mention of the photos having been posted 22 Feb, but the implication is that they have been there for a while, so I have taken out the date from the statement. Ohconfucius (talk) 13:22, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Ok I see your very different interpretation. The original said: Meanwhile, the photos posted on the popular chat room Tianya.com have been viewed nearly 20 million times a day by mainland internet users.
- The appeared on 22 February statement I put in, does not mean the photo appeared "for the first time" on 22 February. It just means on that particular date 22 February. That is how I interpreted it. May be I should have said "on that particular date".
- The viewed 20 million times a day statement should be right. To me this still sounds logical. If WSG was at 28 million days ago, it would not surprise me if it is being viewed that 20 million times daily since. Most likely they were referring to different pictures on that site. But if it is the same picture, the count shouldn't be going backwards. I am too lazy to get an account on tianya. So I'll let this one go. Benjwong (talk) 03:00, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:ChangchunEntrance.png
Thanks for uploading Image:ChangchunEntrance.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rossrs (talk) 14:12, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

additional content on Cantonese Cuisine page
The following additional content on Cantonese Cuisine page and an external link look like appropriate. I was wondering why you did not like it.
Cantonese cuisine (粤菜) is known for its sometime use of ‘exotic’ ingredients. A famous proverb illustrates the variety of Cantonese food: "anything that walks, swims, crawls, or flies with its back to Heaven is edible." However, these exotic foods are not eaten that often.
Cantonese cuisine (粤菜) stresses freshness of ingredients and correct cooking method. Ingredients are usually prepared with a light touch, just enough cooking and seasoning to keep the original color of the material and the natural flavors of the foods. 208.109.109.173 (talk) 03:54, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ok yes. The famous proverb "anything that walks" phrase is possibly a stereotype phrase. See the stereotype section please. Unless you have the very original Chinese phrase with an exact origin, it won't go back in the article. We talked about this in the talk page before too. We maybe wrong... if you know more than us. Other mainland cuisines have equally as many exotic ingredients. Those pages just hasn't been put to proper editing. It felt it was kind of biased. Benjwong (talk) 04:04, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thx for the clarification. I can certainly understand although I myself who's a big Cantonese food fan don't feel offended. Anyway, I've made some modification, if you could review and correct it if necessary, that will be great. I assume you are one of the major contributors of this page. 209.159.64.4 (talk) 20:49, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading Image:WongJim.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Reincarnation userbox
You have an userbox on reincarnation. I will propose to remove this userbox because this userbox is controversial and promoting superstition. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 16:54, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Are you standardizing wikipedia by deleting userboxes that also promote christianity, catholism? Because if you let other userbox stay for believing in Jesus of Nazareth and the Roman Catholic Church, and you can't let this one stay, it is quite biased. Benjwong (talk) 17:07, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Reincarnation is a concept that is present in many religions - Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Taoism etc. My objection is because this userbox is promoting a concept that is superstition. Anyone can tell their religious stance, but to mention a particular view...no. For example one can say through userbox "This user opposes Iraq war", but it will not be appropriate to say "This user opposes killing of US forces in Iraq". One can say "This user support the independence of Tibet". But it will not be appropriate to say "This user support the killing of Chinese troops deployed in Tibet". These comparison are not same in this case. I am just trying to simplify the logic. You have particularly chosen a view, a concept of some religions which is directly promoting superstition. I will just propose to erase the userbox promoting this particular view. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 17:19, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oh no, you have another userbox saying "This user is interested in human soul or spirit". Oh no. Buch of userboxes to promote superstition. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 17:22, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Ok I had to ask if you were standardizing wikipedia all the way across. Because your proposal unfortunately does not apply to me at all. I have not said anything military related on my page. In fact you appear to be the one with the alternate username Intercontinental ballistic missile, which is 10x more controversial than the userboxes I used. I suggest you not promote weaponary in that manner. My reincarnation userbox was a copy of the original reincarnation box. That one has even more users than mine. If you can get that user to delete his, let me know. Benjwong (talk) 17:31, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Tangyuan as Hangzhou cuisine
Are you sure? My impression was that its most famous places of origin are around Ningbo. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 05:11, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

- Appreciate your campaign -- but I have a feeling Tangyuan might be one of those things which really defy classification into one category or another (like steamed rice or soup noodle). It has been widespread in both northern and southern china for the last few centuries, and I don't know if it is possible today to reliably trace it to one province. Each region has its variation, but the general idea seems to be fairly uniform. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 05:27, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Once upon china.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Once upon china.jpg.
I would however like to keep "International and Tibetan" and I hope that is ok with you. However it would be great if you would also step in to check Littlebutterfly every now and then. I am getting really tired of his WP:COATRACK crap and I am the only editor that is doing anything about it.
- As for the characters, it's just "peaceful liberation of Tibet" and he cut and pasted it wrong so the 'zang' got left off and it read "peaceful liberation of west". Alexwoods (talk) 19:49, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- I think that article is at the point where if it doesn't have a decent reference, it doesn't go in. Benjwong (talk) 21:07, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

- Of course not! I'm Alexwoods, he's Dragonnas. Are you seriously asking me if I have a sock puppet? Alexwoods (talk) 19:20, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Please do not undo the add-on in the Simplified Chinese characters page
Benjwong, your attitude to simplified characters is clear but this page is about the Simplified Characters, not about the argument against them. If you wish to talk pro and contra, this can be taken to another page. The HK and Taiwan products have been supplying subtitles in simplified in addition to the traditional, no need for a reference to the obvious fact - it's demand driven. Sorry, but I think you won't achieve anything by removing the facts. --Atitarev (talk) 02:56, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- This is not fact. For starters if a product is NOT pirated, and is legit mainstream.... it will not have simplified characters in HK. If it does have simplified characters, it will be specified exactly as mainland version. This goes for real CDs, movies, products. What you see online in web stores is not an accurate depiction of what's actually sold in HK or Taiwan. Benjwong (talk) 03:03, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- It IS a fact. The US Amazon.com and many others sell these products to anyone and usually you don't even need to check if subtitles in simplified characters are available. Can you name a movie made in the last five years or so in HK or Taiwan, for which there is no simplified version (sold officially, not pirated)? The same applies to these products off the shelf in Australia. Looking at your profile, I see it's no use to discuss this with you one to one, will have to get more attention from other users.
- No need to hate simplified characters, remember that they serve the communication purpose for a huge number of people and is the preferred version for many Chinese speakers and also learners. BTW, I respect and am learning the traditional characters too. --Atitarev (talk) 03:15, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry I still don't think you are understanding. Ok I just said what you see online stores is not an accurate depiction of what is sold in HK. And then you mention US Amazon.com right back. That kind of completely ignored everything I said. Let me re-explain. First off China does all the CD sealing and minting in their factories. They can do whatever they want. That part is fact. Though on a normal day everything in HK is traditional chinese, that goes for 99% of the products. If it is available in simplified chinese, the CD/movie is immediately classified as "mainland China" version and it is often 25 to 40% cheaper because of it. These products are almost treated like mis-prints. For you to tell everyone HK offer simplified char products is almost an insult if you know what I am trying to say. Benjwong (talk) 03:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- I am done for now, if you reply I'll answer you back later. Benjwong (talk) 03:30, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Movie 無間道/无间道 ("Infernal Affairs") sold in HK? Does this help? As Mandarin is important for selling these type of products to a broader range of customers, so is the inclusion of the simplified characters.
- What was the topic about? PRC citizens are exposed to TC because they watch HK/Taiwan movies? What was my addition about? It's not the case in the last years, since HK and Taiwan add SC. Where's the insult? You don't consider inclusion of English as an insult to the Chinese culture? I am copying this discussion in full to the appropriate page. --Atitarev (talk) 03:54, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- I responded on the simplified chars page since u moved the topic there. Benjwong (talk) 16:44, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

List of Chinese Cuisine Names
I started the list of Chinese cuisine names as it was mentioned on the China Project to-do list. It has many problems and is just a start. I've only done some Anhui dishes and most of the Cantonese that are in Wikipedia. While putting it together I saw all your great work on Cantonese and Hong Kong food. You must be a foodie. Mike (talk) 15:58, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi I don't know if I will put the effort on the list. I would rather fix the existing pages first. We are really short on editors. Also please consider there is a category page. Benjwong (talk) 16:44, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Partial revert of both editors at China - something in-between?
Hi. I saw your revert at China and your summary "Beijing olympics takes place in the PRC." Okay, but there were more links that had been added by XdarkchaotixX's revert and original edits back in 21 March. Somehow I feel that if Chinese Dragon can be in the "See Also" then surely Chinese language should be also. I looked and there was only one link to Chinese language from the article - amazing! Err, the Olympics thing is just one time, but the language is long-term and important, yes? Would you review my partial revert and see if one or more of the other three additions can stay or go? Shenme (talk) 06:09, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah thats fine. We did a cleanup of the see also section before. It had way too much. Benjwong (talk) 06:16, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Re-categorization discussion
A discussion has been started at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Modern Chinese music/Categories to discuss how we should recategorize C-pop artist articles. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Pandacomics (talk) 00:43, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:8thRouteArmyStoryBook.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:8thRouteArmyStoryBook.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.
