Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

no changes

Obviously any comment ("edit") that makes the right-wing look good or OK will be deleted by the biased editors of Wikipedia. My edits corrected the FALSE and left-wing clauses. If 10 editors read a clause 6 are on the left and 4 on the right, the left-wing get their side posted even if truthfully wrong. Not a good system.Jonwwwwww (talk) 19:08, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Your edits are disruptive. Please reconsider your approach to editing Wikipedia, starting with collaboration with other editors. Acroterion (talk) 19:23, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Your Recent Revision

Thank you for revising my edit. I was curious what I did to prompt you to undo it. I thought I was asking the page creator a question. Did I asked in the wrong area? WildBullMiller (talk) 23:23, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Talkpages are for proposals for specific article improvements. Your question [1] had nothing to do with article improvement. There is no specific creator of that article, and your apparent assumption that any nominal creator is a believer in the conspiracy theory is inappropriate. You do realize that QAnon is not an organization, and that the conspiracy theory is a bunch of scurrilous nonsense? Acroterion (talk) 00:25, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2018).

Administrator changes

added None
removed AsterionCrisco 1492KFKudpungLizRandykittySpartaz
renamed Optimist on the runVoice of Clam

Interface administrator changes

added AmorymeltzerMr. StradivariusMusikAnimalMSGJTheDJXaosflux

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Francisco Franco

I'm a little curious as to why you reverted to include factually erroneous info in the article. The notion that Franco was fascist is a common misconception. An encyclopedia should not be perpetuating erroneous notions. The books of Payne, Preston, DeMenses, Radosh, Lannon, Scruton, Bolloten, Carr, and Casanova all say verbatim: "Franco was not a fascist". Almost no historians, political philosophers or political scientists who are experts in the subject of fascism consider Franco or Franquist Spain to be fascist. It is an overwhelming consensus. From the article: "Although often identified as fascist, very few scholars of the matter consider Franco's Spain such, usually recognizing it as conservative and authoritarian." The assertion has four reliable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mamalujo (talkcontribs)

Indeed. and I don't disagree, but you still need to open a discussion at the article talkpage before you do things like that. Please discuss there, not here. Acroterion (talk) 00:40, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

Arcataroger

I am in the process of writing up a topic ban notice for this editor. Given their history of editing on Roy Moore I am satisfied that they have persistently and grossly abused both NPOV and BLP and are not capable of editing on that subject in accord with our policy and guidelines. Do you have any objection or know of any reason why they should not be TBanned? Thanks for the block. -Ad Orientem (talk) 01:19, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Heck no. It would be one thing if this was the first time, but they've done this twice now, with no apparent understanding of why it violates Wikipedia policy. They seem to be able to edit other topics successfully, but this one is apparently a problem for them. Acroterion (talk) 01:22, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I completely agree. -Ad Orientem (talk) 01:23, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Done Don't be surprised if there is an appeal. I really don't think he gets it. -Ad Orientem (talk) 01:34, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
I have no doubt of it, they've already gone to UTRS to demand my scalp. Thanks for filling out the paperwork, it's the thing about arbitration enforcement that I really dislike. I fill out enough forms and paperwork in real life as it is. Acroterion (talk)
I'd put the kibosh on that but clearly I am INVOLVED. -Ad Orientem (talk) 01:44, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
No worries, somebody will come along at UTRS. I really ought to help out there. Acroterion (talk) 02:02, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
I've indeffed him after this. Enough. -Ad Orientem (talk) 04:24, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
And now not. This is turning into a damned time sink. -Ad Orientem (talk) 05:38, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
There's current news about a suit Moore's filed, so the subject will be a mess for a while, and we'll have to be aggressive in enforcing BLP against disruption from other actors. As for the email and so forth, I agree that somebody could be messing with us, and to be completely fair to Arcataroger we should give the benefit of the doubt. Acroterion (talk) 11:34, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

The critical perspective from AllMusic seems one-sided and needs to be balanced with other views to represent the topic fairly.

Hello, thanks for noticing my edits to certain jazz album articles. I have deleted some AllMusic reviews under the "Reception" section of the article. To me, the critical perspective from AllMusic seems one-sided and needs to be balanced with other views to represent the topic fairly. You pointed out fairly that AllMusic is a reliable source. However, having just one AllMusic review (on nearly all jazz pages!) doesn't seem to contribute usefully to the article and even appears a bit suspicious (promotion for AllMusic.com?) You mentioned that I should discuss this before editing. Where is the appropriate page to discuss this? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMendelssohn (talkcontribs) 03:38, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Please notify me of a response! Thanks.

Wikiproject Music - WP:WPMU and WT:WPMU - would be the venue for a broadly-based discussion of that kind. Simple mass removal is definitely not the way to go, as you have probably already realized. Acroterion (talk) 03:41, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. Here's my concern: I read articles on jazz everyday and, in nearly every article, there is one AllMusic review, usually by the same critic. I suspect that AllMusic has edited all of these articles for the sake of promoting their brand. I appreciate your suggestion that I add more reliable references to offer a balanced perspective, but that wouldn't be an effective way to address this issue (since I couldn't research and edit such an enormous number of articles). If this is indeed brand promotion on a huge scale, what's the best way to deal with that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMendelssohn (talkcontribs) 03:59, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

I haven't checked, but the much more likely explanation is that one editor added the reviews in one sweep. nothing to do with AllMusic itself, feeling that they were useful. I doubt it's spam from the source itself. Acroterion (talk) 11:42, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

political edits

Please do not use your edits to present your political viewpoint. Blindly deleting the facts you do not like does not help anyone or make the problem go away for Canadians. Read https://zeihan.com/i-think-they-get-it-now-part-sevensept-canada/ and Chapter 12 of his book before making more deletions. This is going to be a major issue in the coming provincial and federal elections. Please help to make this article a valid unbiased source of information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stompski (talkcontribs) 22:23, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

@Stompski: Your accusations of POV-pushing really come across as psychological projection. A cursory glance at Acroterion's user page would suggest that he's from the United States, not Canada, and so really doesn't have a dog in the fight.
I'm a South Carolinian who has never been to Canada, so I definitely have no interest in the matter, but your edits to the article were definitely advocacy. Acroterion's reversions were removing POV material, not making a statement. Ian.thomson (talk) 22:53, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Unblock Ppteles with 1RR?

Ppteles (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) has acknowledged that he broke 3RR and is willing to accept a 1RR restriction for one week if unblocked. I figured 1RR gives a little margin for an accidental revert; 0RR might be too harsh. Are you okay with those unblock terms? —C.Fred (talk) 00:36, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

Fine with me, just bear in mind that they blew past a previous unblock condition. However, I think they understand that we're serious now. Acroterion (talk) 01:48, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

Question: Did You Protect Sorry Not Sorry (I'm Talking About Demi's) When It Was First Released or An Auto?

Good afternoon Acroterion.

Are you a Demi Lovato fan? If so you may watched the news about her apparent overdose. She is still recovering.

Fifth LP Confident is already two years old but Tell Me You Love Me will become a year old two Saturdays later.

Let me ask you a question: Did you protect the lead single Sorry Not Sorry from said album or it was an auto? Cool For The Summer had been protected a while back but it is now unprotected.

You might be the one who locked California Gurls by Katy Perry many moons ago when it first came out. Can't believe that song is already 8 years old!

Lastly, please reply back to me as quick as possible.

Yours truly,

67.81.163.178 (talk) 20:05, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) I don't know where you've got the idea that Acroterion had anything to do with the protection, but if you bother to take the five seconds to check the protection log, you'll see that not only is the article not protected, back when it was protected - most recently in April - he had nothing to do with it. ‑ Iridescent 20:14, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
^^^ What Iridescent said. I'm a little outside the Lovato target demographic. Additionally, Havana (Camila Cabello song) isn't protected. The Tara Strong filmography is indefinitely protected, you can ask Ohnoitsjamie for a change. Murdoc Niccals isn't protected. Some of your comments aren't making much sense. Acroterion (talk) 20:43, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

personal attack in editing history

On the VS Ramachandran editing history: the most recent edit from Sciencelover2016 is a personal attack on me with highly inappropriate accusations. This editor has made no attempt to discuss the editing of this article on the talk page.Neurorel (talk) 14:55, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Sciencelover2016 has a serious conflict of interest. He appears to be a coauthor of a paper on sleep paralysis.

Please note: The first dozen contributions by Sciencelover2016 are to the article on Sleep Paralysis. This is a rather obscure topic and the contributions appear to be made by someone who has a vested interest in this topic. For example, promoting a therapy for this condition. Sciencelover2016 might well be the co-author of a paper with Ramachandran. As far as I can tell, they are the only two people who have published an article that refers to the material that was added to the entry on sleep paralysis such as the role of mirror neurons. I'm inviting admins to join our team at parli.co providing advice on how to build and manage a collaborative website. Parli.co is an emerging project aiming at building a sort of Wikipedia of arguments around controversial topics (more info here). Part of our budget will be destined to such consultancy work, and we think we could benefit from the experience of Wikipedia janitors and admins. Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

I made a booboo with pageswap. The move discussion can be found at Talk:Santa Teresa CD. I dont know what went wrong, but I think something went wrong. Would you please take a look at it? —usernamekiran(talk) 01:01, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

I don't see any obvious problems, except that I would have left a redirect. Acroterion (talk) 01:05, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
Although I see some possibilities for redirect confusion for the men's and wormen's squads, but I don't know enough about the subject to sort it out. It looks like the history ended up where it belongs. Acroterion (talk) 01:08, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
@Usernamekiran: I tweaked the redirect. Is that it? GABgab 01:12, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I always check content of both the articles before performing a swap. But from this discussion, it looked like a straight-forward swap. After performing the move, when I visited both the pages; I got very confuse. The content and the titles doesnt make sense, and neither one previous move. I think it would be best if I contact MYS77 on his talkpage, as he was the one who moved it; and must be familiar with the context. —usernamekiran(talk) 01:16, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
I'll tell you one thing: don't feel bad about feeling confused--that happens easily when you're moving and/or renaming things, to me too. Good luck, Drmies (talk) 01:18, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
Well, I'm confused now too. I think MSY77 is best positioned to determine if it's right. Acroterion (talk) 01:21, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @GAB: I think thats it. But I am still confused because of the previous move. Thats why I contacted you guys (sysops). Sorry for the confusion. I will now head to the talkpage of MYS77.
lol now I confused Acroterion too. thanks for the reassurance Drmies usernamekiran(talk) 01:23, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
This business of parking things in draft space while moving something else is inherently confusing and error-prone. I avoid it because I'm liable to mess it up - somebody smarter than me can do it. Acroterion (talk) 01:27, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
I am good at it, but due to my laziness I prefer to use Andy's script. Only once the script had erred (it exited early), and one page got deleted. It was beyond my technical authorisation, so I had to contact a few sysops again. But I was a lot more panicked than this time as it was my first big booboo, and an article was deleted; so I contacted quite a few online admins lol. —usernamekiran(talk) 02:05, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

I don't think anything went wrong on that, since the standard approach is or to add the women's team record to the men's team page, or to split them in both articles, where the women's team carry the "(women)" name (which is the approach used here). Cheers, MYS77 01:39, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

@MYS77: I am relieved to hear that. usernamekiran(talk) 02:05, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

The refdesk Nazi claims it's not him, but (apart from being a Nazi) he paved the way for this sort of thing. Acroterion (talk) 12:26, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

Deleting well sourced NPOV, pushing POV and inciting hatread against Greek Cypriots and victimhood in Turkish Cypriots

Do you care to explain why, you have deleted the well sourced NPOV version on the articles related to the Cyprus crisis, (more is to come) and added the poor POV version that is rated as junk, by two well known poor POV users, the one being banned from other versions of Wikipedia?Jazz1972 (talk) 09:27, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Do you care to use the talkpage as intended, to explain in detail why you think this is so, and to propose neutral, sourced corrections for consideration by other editors, instead of just removing material you don't like? Can you assure me that you're not trying to substitute one POV version for another, and that everybody involved isn't just pushing a nationalist agenda? Acroterion (talk) 11:33, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

There is already a concencus by the serious NPOV users in the talk page, of what is what, if you care to check it and my edits are just adding those. Check the section ResultJazz1972 (talk) 12:11, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure I'm seeing a consensus among all of the back-and-forth accusations going back more than a decade, but I'll review when I have a chance and am feeling patient. Like most conflicts of this kind, this is an inherently difficult subject to resolve down to some universally accepted form of neutrality. Acroterion (talk) 12:17, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Until now the only thing that you are doing is that you are constantly deleting the NPOV version, adding the POV version and taking 100% the part of the POV users that incite hatred against Greek Cypriots and a victimhood culture among Turkish Cypriots, while at the same time threatenng to ban the NPOV user. This is noted. Tryting to pretend neutrality, while you are doing it, doesn't improve your case, but makes it worst. The discussion with you is finished here. You are part of the problem and you are not accepted as a mediatorJazz1972 (talk) 15:42, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

I'm not a mediator, that's not what administrators do. You're been making unilateral removals of sourced content from articles without finding consensus, edit-warring and making accusations against other editors. You may be correct that the material is unbalanced, but it is up to you to make a clear case for that and to get other editors to agree to it. I'm addressing your behavior. Please reconsider your approach to editing Wikipedia - it operates by consensus, and removal of content because you feel it reflects badly on one nationality or another isn't the way to make your preferred version stick. Acroterion (talk) 22:46, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Review for English/French speaker

Hello Acroterion. Please excuse me if I am doing something improper, as I am new to Wikipedia. I am contacting you because you are a speaker of both English and French. I have created the page Draft:Pierre_Jovanovic nearly 2 months ago, and I am waiting for a review. Could you please consider having a look at it ? And again, please excuse me if my request is improper. I am learning the ropes. Best regards. Micha Jo (talk) 17:29, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

PS. By the way. Your Teton Range photo is stunning (I am an amateur photographer myself). And Wyoming is on my wishlist of places to see before I die! :)

It looks like you've gotten some help and advice from a couple of editors, and it's looking much better. Sorry about the wait, sometimes it takes a long time to get reviewed.
Thank you for the kind words about the picture - I was out there a month ago, just before winter suddenly arrived. It's worth the trip. Disruptive editor

I think it is long past due to ban or permanently block User John2690-john2690. His most recent actions are here[5] involving an article deleted over 5 years ago. In the new recreation he wrote Kubesh played pro football when it was determined at AFD he never played a down. Other problems with this editor range from Conflicts of interest[6], creating articles about himself and sockpuppetry[7]. If you go through the history of Pine City, Minnesota and his talk page you will find what I'm talking about. If you want me to point out specific things, let me know. It's a lot of work with this editor....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 23:49, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

What was the original title of the Kubesh article? I'm not seeing any deleted edits. Acroterion (talk) 23:53, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
It was Ron Kubesh. Johnjohn made it a redirect. Here is the AFD too[8]....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 23:57, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
You may want to note this[9]]. He can't post properly to his talk page. This editor has been around for over 5 years....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 00:01, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
I see some issues with competence and working with other editors, but I don't think it's to a block-worthy level. I've deleted the re-created article and will keep an eye on things, although for the next couple of days I have rather intense work-related commitments, so I won't be around much. Acroterion (talk) 00:08, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
Acroterion, I respectfully disagree. This behavior has been going on for a long time. I accept your decision. Just two little things- Can you please delete Ron Kubesh too? That's the old article and now a redirect to a non-existent page. Two- Johnson is asking on his talk page if he could call me. It will snow here in Palm Beach County on a July day before that call takes place....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 00:19, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
Understood, but the lack of clue usually needs to be a bit more pronounced before we block, and I'd like to give them another chance to prove that they'll improve. I agree with you about the phone call business, that's not on. Acroterion (talk) 00:25, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Back in 2013, NawlinWiki deleted the page and restored it with all of the sock edits removed. There are signs that the vandal is still active (although it could be an impostor). Now selective deletion is normally not used for removing vandalism (Rev Deletion is normally used), but given the prolific nature of the involved LTA I think it is justified. per WP:DENY. funplussmart (talk) 23:52, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, we used to do that back in the dark ages before we had revdel. It would be nice, but it'll need to be a rather lengthy background task for a slow day if somebody wants to undertake it. In any case, don't tag the article, just leave a note on the talkpage to see if somebody's interested. Acroterion (talk) 23:59, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
@Ivanvector: cleaned up the page history, but apparently forgot to restore the talk page. Can he (or someone else) do that? funplussmart (talk) 21:40, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
Argh, so many buttons! I'll fix it when I'm at a keyboard if nobody beats me to it. Thanks for pointing it out. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 10:46, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Done. Yeah, we don't really do selective deletion any more since we have revdel. I decided to ignore the convention here because this article has been targeted by a relentless idiot for years, and the article history is almost entirely deleted revisions. There are 121 visible, and the deleted page has 300; the talk page has similar numbers. Don't expect this to be a routine thing, most admins will justifiably decline your request. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 12:21, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
I think this is the only case selective deletion was used to respond to vandalism since RevDel was put in. Now that the page is ECPed indefinitely, I don't anticipate any more issues with this one. funplussmart (talk) 14:44, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Ivanvector. I looked at doing the talkpage last night and decided I was too tired to do a good job with it. Funplussmart, you're probably correct that this is a unique case, let's hope it stays that way. Acroterion (talk) 14:58, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Maithil cuisine

Hi. Can you please take a look at the recent edits to Maithil cuisine page. Thanks. — Jakichandan (talk) 01:22, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

I've left them a note. It doesn't look like there's any corresponding article in any of the Indian languages - perhaps they might want to start there first? Acroterion (talk) 01:34, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I hope that they don't revert again without discussing on talk page. Regards. —Jakichandan (talk) 01:42, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
I'll try to keep an eye on it. The material might be best shared on the Maithili language WP first, presuming that there are sources to be found - English sources may be hard to come by. Acroterion (talk) 01:45, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Believe me, It is even harder to find a source in Maithili. There are very few articles published in Maithili language. Thanks.—Jakichandan (talk) 01:54, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
I was afraid of that. I would hope that documentation of Maithili cuisine might be a priority there. Acroterion (talk) 01:58, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm back

My block has expired. I'm feeling better now and less anxious. I took Nick's advice and asked "how to approach an article" at the tea house. I apologize for what happened. Tigerdude9 (talk) 18:46, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Good! Just remember the rules:
  • No uploading images you found somewhere else - you don't have a sufficiently strong understanding of image policy to make those judgments
  • No disaster rankings
  • Stay away from FA work. Like images, you haven't shown an understanding of the process.
  • Don't promise to not do something and then do it anyway.
Happy editing! Acroterion (talk) 18:50, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Is the following considered disruptive editing?

In most aviation disaster articles, the sections/subsections about the aircraft, passengers, and crew all come before the crash section. I must confess that I have done this rearrangement several times, but I don't know whether or not it's disruptive. I have not seen any reverts on them though. If you do consider this disruptive, then I will undo the edits that involved the rearrangement. Tigerdude9 (talk) 14:48, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

That's standard formatting, and it's appropriate. While not disruptive per se, it's best that you leave the standard format alone, rather than changing it to suite your personal taste. Acroterion (talk) 18:29, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for letting me know. I'm glad to hear that it's appropirate and is not disrptive per se. I will admit that I can't gaurantee, as this feels hard for me, but I will do my best to leave the standard formatting alone. If i do change the formatting it again (which I hope I don't), then (if an apology is necessary) I apologize in advance. Again though, I will do my best. Tigerdude9 (talk) 19:40, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
Just leave it alone, stop saying you might, or that you'll try. It is disruptive to say you won't do something and then do it anyway. Acroterion (talk) 19:49, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
I will leave the standard formatting alone. Tigerdude9 (talk) 02:34, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! Acroterion (talk) 02:49, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Update: I'm still leaving the stardard format alone. However, I had this talk with Deeday-UK, who said that you could rearrange the aircraft, passengers, and crew sections in aviation disaster articles, but only those that have a complex background of the flight. See the actual talk for more info. Tigerdude9 (talk) 16:49, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

No, I did not say "that you could rearrange the aircraft, passengers, and crew sections". I said that a section about the background or the history of the flight may be appropriate in some cases, before the Accident section. Any section specifically titled Aircraft, Crew or Passengers should follow the Accident one, per WP:AATF/[Page content] guidelines. --Deeday-UK (talk) 17:16, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
I must have misinterpreted your statement. I was just double checking. I do not have any intention to edit the format. I could however give a list in which the background or the history of the flight may could be appropriate. Does that work? Tigerdude9 (talk) 13:45, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Truth about Stefano Gabbana

I posted information on the page of Stefano Gabbana. The information is confirmed by The Guardian, NBC, CNN, SCMP, etc. The modification is NOT vandalism. Please read the news and do not keep deleting the information and covering the truth. Please explain why confirmed information is vandalism.Jensonw (talk) 01:58, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

You've been warned on your talkpage for pushing an agenda to attack Gabbana. Stop, or expect to be blocked. Acroterion (talk) 01:59, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Being publicly exposed on Instagram is the truth. It is NOT a statement. Almost every media are reporting this issue. I have no intention of shaming anyone. I just share the confirmed truth. I feel very sorry that Wikipedia looks like an authoritarian. Although Wikipedia fails to include all the truth, the truth will exist and prevail around the world. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jensonw (talkcontribs) 02:10, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Since you can't write about it neutrally, you should stay away from the article. You may not use Wikipedia as a platform to announce your dislike of someone. Please find something else to edit, where you're not so personally outraged. Acroterion (talk) 02:16, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

All the sentences are facts from media. The same facts are also on other Wikipedia pages. Your claim is also not true that I am outraged and dislike someone. Facts don't care about feeling. I feel sorry that Wikipedia suppresses fact and truth. I thought Wikipedia was better than traditional media. Unfortunately, it is not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jensonw (talkcontribs) 02:26, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

We expect editors to write neutral, dispassionate prose, especially in biographies. You've got sources, and if you'd simply written "Gabbano was criticized for online comments disparaging China, resulting in the cancellation of shows in China" you wouldn't be receiving warnings. Your attitude toward the subject is the problem. Please avoid editing subjects where you can't write neutrally. Acroterion (talk) 02:31, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism

Hi Acroterion; first of all, thanks so much for your work fighting vandalism, such as the vandalism that came to my talk page; it's very much appreciated. I thought you might want to know that Glapz is now editing under IP 192.203.139.96, making the same vandalistic edits as before. Could you perhaps block them and RD3 their edits? I generally report such users at WP:AIV, but since there's a high backlog there and you've combated this vandal previously, I thought it would be better to just reach out here. Harassment by other users

Binksternet has been falsely accusing me of making disruptive edits, starting edit wars, and posting threats to suspend me on my talk page, even though he isn't an admin. Tell him to leave me alone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.9.224.228 (talk) 03:15, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

His warning appears to be justified and appropriate. You don't have to be an administrator to issue warnings. Stop posting flimsily-sourced original research and opinion. Acroterion (talk) 03:17, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Sock editing at Bosnia and Herzegovina

Hi there. In case you weren't aware, just pointing you to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Bosnipedian. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:00, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, quack. Thanks, blocking now. Acroterion (talk) 17:04, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Cheers. They won't give up, but blocking and reverting, plus the semi-protection, should keep things under control. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:07, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
That's pretty clear from the SPI, but having reviewed, they're not too hard to spot. Acroterion (talk) 17:10, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Thank you! The sense of scale in the West is hard to capture in a photograph, that was an attempt, with near and far and a lot of sky. The Tetons are 30 miles away.
I remember cresting that pass for the first time in 1973 with my parents in a VW squareback - the view was completely unexpected, and we were all astounded. Acroterion (talk) 16:41, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
Looks like something to put on my biking bucket list. Even if on another continent and my dislike of airplanes. Wow. - DVdm (talk) 16:56, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
The base of the Tetons and the Teton Fault
The Tetons are unique in their complete lack of foothills. You can literally walk up to the base of the mountains. The eastern faces of the Sierras from the Owens Valley are somewhat similar (I've been there), though there are a few hills at their base, and the north face of Denali (haven't been there yet). I don't know of any place in Europe where there's a distant view like that with no obstructions.
As far as biking goes, the valley floor at Jackson Hole is about 6,000 feet (1,800 m) and Togwotee Pass is 9,658 feet (2,944 m), a 3,000-foot (910 m) climb from Dubois. You'll need to be acclimatized. Jackson Hole itself is pretty flat and has an excellent set of dedicated biking routes in and around town and out into the park. Acroterion (talk) 17:47, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
Awesome!. Here in Europe I tihnk we have some similar landscapes in Italy's pre-Alpine Dolomites. You can make long walks and biking tours, but then suddenly there's that wall. Fabulous indeed! - DVdm (talk) 18:41, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes, the Dolomites. I haven't been, at least not in daylight. They're on the list. Acroterion (talk) 19:50, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Acroterion,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 07:40, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

your block of user:142.161.26.36

Your six month block is over (his 6th in the last year) and he's right back to trolling Sex differences in humans with the claim that no woman can be taller than any man [10] Meters (talk) 04:14, 20 December 2018 (UTC).

Now he'll (I assume it's a he) get only one block in the next year. Acroterion (talk) 04:21, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Requested revdel

Hi. I saw on your userpage that you are willing to handle revdel requests. Can you please hide this revision as "Grossly insulting, degrading, or offensive material" (criteria 2). Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 00:23, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

And this --DannyS712 (talk) 00:31, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
I've blocked the offending IP, but while offensive, their vandalism doesn't cross into what is usually considered grossly offensive conduct. It's just offensive. Acroterion (talk) 01:15, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
@Acroterion: thanks for the explanation, and for the block --DannyS712 (talk) 01:51, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

I think that this (and maybe this) might qualify for revdel. do they? --DannyS712 (talk) 04:25, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Unfortunately, yes. Also blocked. Thanks for the note. Acroterion (talk) 04:29, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
No problem. Is it okay if I come to you with revdel requests in general, so that I can more easily understand what is or is not covered? --DannyS712 (talk) 04:30, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Certainly. There's a certain amount of leeway in interpretations, so I may have slightly different views than another admin. Acroterion (talk) 04:37, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Sorry!

Regarding my actions on the 'Time for the day of the September 11 attacks' article, I was unaware that changes to the article were meant to be talked about. I am glad you have reversed my actions on the article and I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience that I have caused. I promise to make sure that I talk about changes to any article that I believe deserves to be edited.

Regards, jakanz — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jakanz (talkcontribs) 03:04, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

No problem. You should know that sources differ on the times associated with the 9/11 attacks, and that the times stated in the series of articles on the subject are the product of extensive discussions about how to address the differences. Acroterion (talk) 03:20, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

recent IP block

Hi, I reverted the edits that 2601:193:4100:48b9:f486:2b05:442a:f983 made and gave a warning, then was watching the IP's contributions to see what they would do next, so I saw when you blocked them. I thought I had to go through all the warning levels before I could request a block on an IP. Is that not the case? Their edits were particularly vicious, could I have asked for a block immediately? Schazjmd (talk) 01:02, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

There's no requirement for an escalating series of warnings when the vandalism is pure anti-Semitic trolling. If it was a kid making poop vandalism or ur mom stuff, sure, but that IP knows what they're doing and shouldn't expect to have to be warned for it. Acroterion (talk) 01:05, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Katmai National Park and Preserve

This [map] shows the range of brown bears/grizzly bears (though it only says brown). As you can see grizzly bears can be found in Katmai National Park and on the peninsula you mentioned. We can use both links. Also, merry Christmas! Tigerdude9 (talk) 02:38, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

If it only says brown bears, then you can't very well claim that they're called grizzlies, can you? Alaskans draw a distinction between the two, even though they're conspecific, and smaller "grizzly bears" are found in portions of Alaska nearer Canada, not out on the Alaska Peninsula, where the really big bears are called brown bears. See Alaska Peninsula brown bear. Size is the prime distinction. Acroterion (talk) 03:48, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Well no I can't, and size is hatd to tell, but what about the photo below (check the details before you reply)?

Tigerdude9 (talk) 03:54, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

If it was taken at Brooks Falls (and they mostly are) It's an Alaska Peninsula brown bear. They're huge and brown and near the coast, not merely large and silvered and inland. For some reason some editors are bothered by the inconsistency in naming for Ursus arctos horribilis and feel they must make it consistent, regardless of common usage. Wikipedia reflects the messy actual usage. Alaskans call them all brown bears, especially as you go west. Acroterion (talk) 04:06, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
It was indeed taken at Brooks Falls. Tigerdude9 (talk) 04:25, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

Rev del needed

Hello! A revision deletion is needed at User talk:AndyBryantMScPhD, please. Specifically, this edit, this edit and this edit should be deleted, as they contain off-Wiki personal identification information. StrikerforceTalk 15:46, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Jefferson Davis's Nickname

@Acroterion: Hello, you reverted my edit where I added Jefferson Davis's nickname, Jeff, to his Wikipedia page. (Same thing with Alexander Stephens.) Would it instead be okay if I added a little reference box next to his name containing the text, "Occasionally referred to as simply Jeff Davis by contemporaries."? (Again, same thing with Alexander Stephens. [I'd also like to know why you reverted the infobox photograph on Alexander Stephens's page.]) PoliticalBoi (talk) 01:49, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Use the talkpage to make a proposal. Remember that Jefferson Davis is a featured article, so changes should be made with caution and with a consensus on the talkpage. In general, nicknames should not appear in the first sentence except in very unusual circumstances - even Alf Landon is called by his proper name in the lede. See WP:NCBIO for lots more. Acroterion (talk) 01:57, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
As for the picture, I have no particular views - the nicknames are the issue. They get messy in a hurry, and their absence is an indication that it might not be accepted practice to add them in all over the place. Acroterion (talk) 01:59, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Acroterion: Thanks for the explanation. PoliticalBoi (talk) 02:13, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
