The Estonia Sculpture

"In 2010, a bronze bust sculpture of Connery was placed in the capital city of Estonia.[58]"

How about ... naming the city and giving a reason why this was done and any connection between Mr. Connery and Estonia that prompted this sculpture. As it stands the comment seems grossly out of place and is only a partial fact, certainly not a comment worthy of entry in an encyclopedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.162.209.124 (talk) 03:02, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Retirement section

This section needs tweaking. The first paragraph states "on 8 June 2006, he confirmed his retirement from acting.". The second paragraph states "Connery returned to voice acting, playing the title character in the animated short Sir Billi the Vet, and in 2005 he recorded voiceovers..." (voice-overs). The timeline is twisted plus the paragraph can confuse a reader. He either retired in 2005 and re-retired in 2006 or ...maybe it is just me, but "backward be to seems it", and the paragraph drops in from where? Otr500 (talk) 02:06, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

The fact that Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington were nominated for academy awards in the same year as Connery is absolutely irrelevant and should be removed from the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.87.179.4 (talk) 08:17, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

In 1960, Connery appeared as Hotspur in the third and fourth episodes (covering "Henry IV", part 1) of the BBC Shakespeare series "An Age of Kings", which aired in the US on WNTA-TV, channel 13 (a forerunner of public television), and won a Peabody Award in 1961. 69.50.61.35 (talk) 17:38, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Overlinking

Is it overlinking to state that Sean Connery was a [[Scottish people|Scottish]] actor or should the statement be removed? The Banner talk 07:39, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Per WP:OVERLINKING, major nationalities are not linked. —Wash whites separately (talk) 10:56, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
So, you better revert yourself, as "Scottish" does not point to a nationality but to an ethnicity. The Banner talk 17:30, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
Ethnicities aren't linked either, and even if they were, MOS:OPENPARAGRAPH says not to include ethnicities in the lead. "Scottish" should refer to his nationality, not his ethnicity. —Wash whites separately (talk) 18:18, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
Aha, when one argument is refuted, just bring in a new argument. What about the readers and the encyclopaedia? As the guideline states: It is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense, and occasional exceptions may apply. The Banner talk 18:44, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
Don't give yourself too much credit; you didn't refute anything. The format has always been "[name] is a [nationality] [profession]", and you know that. As I explained to you numerous times, common sense entails not linking it, because an article about the entire history of Scottish people will not help a reader's understanding of an article about Sean Connery. —Wash whites separately (talk) 18:54, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
And common sense is out of the door. Too bad that you did not read any further than the lead. His membership and activities for the Scottish National Party are evidence that his ethnicity does matter. The Banner talk 20:42, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Claims that Donald Dewar blocked knighthood in 1997 and 1998

The claim in the 'Personal life' section that "He had been nominated for a knighthood in 1997 and 1998, but these nominations were vetoed by Donald Dewar due to Connery's political views" is not entirely supported by the accompanying references: The July 2000 BBC report says (my emphasis added), "Connery's support for the Scottish National Party and an independent Scotland, is reported to have resulted in him being denied a knighthood in the 1997 and 1998 honours lists. The 69-year-old actor donates £4,800 a month to party coffers. The then Scottish Secretary Donald Dewar was said to have vetoed Connery's knighthood in December 1997."[1] The Observer's Euan Ferguson doesn’t mention Dewar at all, writing (again, my emphasis added): "The late 1990s were a bad period: his espousal of the SNP's cause so angered Scottish Labour, whose tireless championing of devolution rather than full independence has at least resulted in this new Parliament, that his knighthood is widely believed to have been blocked".[2] I have reworded the sentence accordingly. Infobox could use a better photograph of Sean Connery

I see it over and over again in Wikipedia articles, and I'll never understand it as long as I live. Sean Connery is shown as an old man in his Infobox photo. The Infobox should contain a photo of Connery when he was in his prime during the James Bond series. Connery was much more handsome and marketable in 1964 than he was in 2008. Most old people are relegated to rocking chairs, and they are hated by the government because they keep collecting Social Security checks. Scrap the current photo for one from the mid-1960s.Anthony22 (talk) 02:06, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

Sean Connery and his wife have lived in the Bahamas, in Lyford Cay on New Providence Island, since the 90's. That area escaped significant damage from Hurricane Dorian, and Connery considers himself lucky. May stories to that effect. Here's one:

Proper appearance of name (Sean Connery is neither KBE nor CBE)

I recommend that the proper appearance of Sean Connery's name should be:

Sir Sean Thomas Connery (born Thomas Sean Connery; 25 August 1930)

Reasons:

  1. He is a Knight Bachelor, and isn't entitled to any post-nominal letters other than "Kt" (See below for support for both.)
  2. His name appears as "Sean Thomas Connery" in The London Gazette supplement that announces his Knighthood.
  3. The names of Elton John and Paul McCartney both appear exactly as they appear in the announcements of their Knighthoods in The London Gazette.
  4. Public figures' names should appear as the name that they're commonly known by, followed by birth name. (e.g. Elton John's Wikipedia page uses this convention: "Sir Elton," his chosen name, rather than "Sir Reginald," his birth name.)
  5. He is referred to as "Sir Sean Connery" (not "Sir Thomas") on his own website.

Sean Connery was named on the list of Knights Bachelor for the 2000 New Year Honours. (Source: "No. 55710". The London Gazette (Supplement). 30 December 1999. pp. 1–2.) Note his name is give as "Sean Thomas Connery.")

(See also "Elton Hercules John" on page 2 of The London Gazette and "James Paul McCartney" on page 2 of The London Gazette. Both of these match the names on their respective Wikipedia pages.)

For details on post-nominal letters, see Knight Bachelor:

Knights Bachelor may prefix "Sir" to their forenames... Since recipients are not knights of an order of chivalry there are no post-nominal letters associated with the honour, however when the style "Sir" is awkward or incomplete due to a subsequent appointment, recipients may use the letters "Kt" after their name...

So, as a Knight Bachelor, he is entitled to neither "KBE" nor "CBE." Use of "Kt" is allowed, but I find no evidence of Connery using this convention, himself.

Each of these would be acceptable:

  • Sir Sean Thomas Connery
  • Sir Sean Thomas Connery Kt
  • Sean Thomas Connery Kt

Since his webpage uses "Sir Sean Connery," and the public knows him as "Sean Connery," not "Thomas Sean Connery," I submit that "Sir Sean Thomas Connery" is the most appropriate naming, with clarification of birth name. His name appears as "Sean Thomas Connery" in The London Gazette (above) and as "Sir Sean Thomas Connery" for his entry in the National Portrait Galley.

In addition, instead of "Connery was knighted," "Connery was made Knight Bachelor" would be more clear, and would help prevent confusion about "KBE/CBE/Kt" in future edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:646:4100:29:E1BB:CAA8:39E:CDAE (talk) 15:16, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Filmography

Please add to the filmography list: Sean Connery played Zed in Zardoz. Zardoz is a 1974 Irish-American science fantasy film, and later a book, written, produced, and directed by John Boorman and starring Sean Connery and Charlotte Rampling, and featuring Sara Kestelman. The film was shot by cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth on a budget of US$1.57 million. @WWGB and TDKR Chicago 101:The issue with the The New York Times is that their source goes back to BBC, which has removed the word "overnight". So this is currently an obsolete and possibly wrong information. — Vincent Lefèvre (talk) 15:08, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
@Vincent Lefèvre: A lot of sources are going to be linked to the BBC because they were the first to break the story of his death. If we see a multitude of sources saying he died on the 31st then that should be our answer unless an agent/rep/family member says otherwise. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 15:10, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
@TDKR Chicago 101: But my point is that the BBC has corrected their article from "overnight" to nothing, i.e. indeterminate date. So all the sources published before this change should be regarded as obsolete. — Vincent Lefèvre (talk) 15:16, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
@Vincent Lefèvre: The NYT updates regularly when provided reliable information and it was last updated a minute-two minutes ago. They haven't even mentioned the BBC article. "...died on Saturday in Nassau, the Bahamas. He was 90. His death was confirmed by Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister, on Twitter. “Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons,” she wrote." --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 15:22, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

This is insanely long for a Wiki article.

It is far too detailed and reads narratively, like one would expect in a biography. It needs a firm edit to get the anecdotes down to something that aligns with Wiki style (from what I know of it.) e.g. relating whose flat he was living in when he met Shelly Winters. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BeachMom90505 (talkcontribs) 18:15, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Extraneous content?

No sooner had I added the following than it was deleted by another contributor as "extraneous". I rather object and feel it is worthy of inclusion:

Connery was slated to star as sailor Sam Saltus, an aging white Bermudian and an undefeated Royal Navy boxing champion, in the film adaptation of the 1973 Bermuda-set novel The Sailor and The Fox, by author Brian Burland (a Bermudian whose father's company, a forerunner to Burland, Conyers and Mareira, now BCM McAlpine Ltd, assembled Fairmile Type-B motor launches in Bermuda under contract for its Royal Naval Dockyard during the war).[1] This was one of Connery's slightly tenuous connections to the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, as well as to the Royal Navy: in addition to his actual service as a Royal Naval rating, he of course had played fictional Royal Naval officer James Bond on loan to MI6, somewhat paralleling the Second World War career of author Ian Fleming. Fleming worked for intelligence chief Sir William Stephenson and visited him in Bermuda after the war at the Princess Hotel, where Stephenson lived briefly before moving into a house in the same parish. Stephenson was the subject of the book A Man Called Intrepid by William Stevenson, and of the film adapted from it. Stevenson was a friend of Bermudian lawyer William Kempe, a founding-partner of the Appleby, Spurling & Kempe law firm and the father of actor Will Kempe,[2] after the two had served together during the war as Fleet Air Arm pilots). The Princess Hotel had been used by 1,200 staff of Imperial Censorship (part of part of British Security Co-ordination) for counter-intelligence work during the war.[3] Connery also starred in two films (Thunderball and Cuba) with Bermudian actor Earl Cameron.[4] Connery's first wife, Diane Cilento, had starred in The Admirable Crichton, filmed in Bermuda in 1956.[5] The film adaptation of "The Sailor and The Fox", however, sadly fell through.[6][7]

I wasn't the one who removed the text, but it seems like a lot of undue and disproporationate coverage of rather a trivial event that never came to fruition. Mere verifiability does not guarantee inclusion. And subjective language like "sadly fell through" is not appropriate for a neutral encyclopedia. --Animalparty! (talk) 22:36, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Try it out on a different page? You yourself use "tenuous" in connecting Connery and all this together; it feels almost like a six degrees of Bond game. One can see the work you've put in, but it doesn't mean it belongs on this page, but there are several other subjects mentioned within it you could check for inclusion (once you've cleaned up issues mentioned by other editor).Jennablurrs7575 (talk) 08:32, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Connery's mother was Maclean, not McLeod

The caption for one of the photographs currently states that Connery is wearing the tartan of his mother's clan, MacLeod.

In fact, his mother was McLean, and accordingly, he was wearing the Maclean green hunting tartan.

The same photo appears on the Wikipedia page for Clan Maclean:

Sean Connery's 1987 Barbara Walters Interview

I enjoy, use, and donate to Wiki. When I saw that Sean Connery had died, I remembered hearing about his controversial interview with Barbara Walters from back in the 1980’s and went to see what Wiki had to say about it. I was very surprised it wasn’t there, so I looked up a few articles on it, selected a source with a decent reputation (Newsweek) and put the info on the Connery page. Embedded within that Newsweek article was a 57 second clip from the interview where Connery himself states his belief that slapping a woman is appropriate under certain circumstances. The source was rock solid.

The post was deleted, which I thought was because I made a cite reference error. I hadn’t saved it so I posted another iteration, similar message. That one disappeared too. I’m new at this and wondered if I’d made an error in publishing. I posted a third time, unclear that the first two were intentionally removed.

I’m new to editing Wiki, and hoping for your generous forbearance and the open, welcoming environment for new-comers described in the ‘5 Pillars.’

The BLP guidelines say if an incident is noteworthy, relevant, and well documented, it belongs in the article — even if it is negative and the subject dislikes all mention of it. Now that Connery is no longer living, that sensitivity would be lesser still.

Using quotes from his Barbara Walters interview, I wish to include on the Sean Connery Wiki page that Connery believed slapping a woman was appropriate under certain circumstances. This is established fact, completely verifiable, on video, from his own lips.

I’m unclear on how the consensus process works. But I do know, after looking at the archives for this page, many Wiki users over the years have advocated including this fact about Connery on this page. So over the arc of time there is already a measure of consensus.

Thank you for your time and attention. EBinSanDiego (talk) 06:21, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

Tributes

The "Death" section currently includes a list of actors who have paid tributes after the death of Connery. We don't usually include such info in bio articles and I don't really think Twitter tributes are especially notable. The article mentions that he was small at primary school and went through a growth spurt at around the age of 12. Did he go to separate primary and secondary schools? The BBC's obituary (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-13087132) mentions that he left school at 13 and though I'm more familiar with the system in England/Wales than in Scotland my impression was that a lot of working class children at the time tended to go the same school from the start of their education till leaving school at 13 or 14. MacLean Tartan

In the picture of Sir Sean Connery at the Tartan Day celebration at Washington, DC, the tartan he is wearing was wrongly identified as a MacLeod tartan. This is incorrect. The following clan reference should be changed from 'MacLeod' to 'MacLean': in 2000 he wore a green-and-black tartan kilt of his mother's MacLeod clan.

Sir Sean's maternal grandfather is Neil McLean (as cited in this Wikipedia article). Additionally, I have contacted the author of the cited Reuters article to inform him of this error (correction presumably pending).

If you visit the website of either House of Edgar (https://www.houseofedgar.com/find-your-clan-tartan/) or Lochcarron (https://www.lochcarron.co.uk/tartan-fabric/) -both reputable tartan manufacturers--and search for the MacLean tartan, you will see the MacLean Hunting tartan example matches that of which Sir Sean's kilt is made and worn during his knighting ceremony. Certainly not a MacLeod tartan.

His name was never Thomas Sean Connery

Much rubbish has been written about Sean Connery, some of it repeated here. What is especially annoying here is that the entry leads off by calling him Sir Thomas Sean Connery. That was never his name. He was born Thomas Connery - I know I have his birth certificate right here. Sean was not his middle name ever. By the time he was knighted he was Sean Connery. He was knighted as Sir Sean Connery, as your link to London Gazette clearly shows. The Wikipedia entry contains several other mistakes. I suggest one of your editors fact-check it against any of my various obituaries in The Scotsman, The Herald or most extensively the Mail on Sunday. Pheidippides7 (Brian Pendreigh). Pheidippides7 (talk) 14:22, 24 November 2020 (UTC) 24/11/20

The origin of the assertion that Sean was his middle name seems to be this sentence : "Connery said he was called Sean, his middle name, long before becoming an actor, explaining that when he was young he had an Irish friend named Séamus and that those who knew them had decided to call Connery by his middle name whenever both were present." This was added, completely unsourced, in 2005. Since it seems to contradict all other sourced evidence I am going to remove it and change the article to reflect the Who's Who entry. If anyone can produce a source which does not itself derive from Wikipedia we can reconsider. Ian Dalziel (talk) 12:54, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Connery's belief in hitting women should be mentioned in lede

That's what he believed for a long part of his life at least. He later avoided such statements and said women shouldn't be hit. I think it was just damage control as he never offered himself for arrest for his wife's abuse and there seems no reason at all to doubt her. Wikipedia is a neutral encyclopedia and Connery's views on hitting women I think garnered enough media attention. LéKashmiriSocialiste (talk) 00:57, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

No reason at all it should be in the lead. 109.147.115.92 (talk) 18:52, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
No, it shouldn't. It would have to be much more important to deserve that. Compare that to Robert Downey Jr.'s drug abuse, which had a major effect on his career. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:46, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
If thinking hitting women isn't an issue and sign of wokeness, than that's your problem User:Encyclopædius. Oppose if you want but do not insult me or my opinions. Treating beating women callously shows you are okay with it as well. LéKashmiriSocialiste (talk) 17:01, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
Sean never even said anything about "callously beating women". He said that if he's having an argument with his wife and she's screaming hysterically and literally won't stop then he said he can justify giving her a slap as a last resort, but '"he wouldn't recommend it"'. The Left latched onto it and were calling him a woman beater on the day of his death. No, it's not right to hit a woman, it's not an excusable thing to say, but he is from a totally different world from today and what he said had absolutely no bearing on his career. (as did the drug addiction with Downey Jr.). If Sean had been banned for ten years from acting for saying it, then you could justify a mention.† Encyclopædius 17:54, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
No. See WP:UNDUE. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 20:16, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
That's not all he said or did Encyclopaedius. Did you forget that his own wife accused him of abusing her? By the way just search a video of hi talking about women. The first video of him you'll find is where he says, that women are pretty good at not leaving a thing alone. That's a stereotype of all women. He continues saying they want to have the last word and in such a situation "it's absolutely right". That's quite different from what you said isn't it? At most he masked it, that he was a supporter pof hitting women and sexist. Not much different than conservatives who promote sexism, outdated gender roles and overall bigotry around the world. LéKashmiriSocialiste (talk) 04:50, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

His other wife for a much longer period though said the opposite and he couldn't have been more of a gentleman.† Encyclopædius 08:25, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Well, it's not right to hit anyone. If you say that it's not right to hit a woman, you are sexist.--Jack Upland (talk) 10:34, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

It's not about the ethics of whether it's right to hit a woman or anybody, it's about whether it is notable enough to mention in the lead and it is as Lugnuts says.† Encyclopædius 12:12, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

It is for you. That's why you came to defend Sean Connery instead of simply saying politely why it shouldn't be here, started attacking me, the left and whatnot. If you do that, I'm not going to be polite either. Besides a lot of women don't report abuse often which is why it goes underreported. I'm sure you aren't unaware of that. Happened in my own family, it was quite liberal but my father could easily get angry. My mother wouldn't destroy the marriage just over being beaten up a few times. That happens in a lot of houses around the world and I'm sure you're aware. Think on that before you try to distract again with excuses like "his other wife said". LéKashmiriSocialiste (talk) 13:54, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

So what you're saying is that because you came from a home wth an abusive father you feel it's your duty to root out Connery for abuse to women and make a big thing of it in the lede?† Encyclopædius 14:28, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Did I say that though? You're saying that in order to defend Connery. I don't get hung up over few beatings, in fact my father beat me too at times. No big deal. I'm just highlighting Conner's own words which have been highlighted in the media. What other excuse you want to waste time on instead of actually discussing anything about the topic? Lead photo

Proposal

A rather minor point, but the article opens with a photo of Connery from 2008. This made sense while he was alive, but I think it'd be a better idea now to have a photo circa 1960-1990, as opposed to a photo taken after having retired from acting. And yes, I know copyright is an issue. --Ismail (talk) 10:03, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

How about Sean Connery 1964.png? It was taken in 1964 and is a pretty good image. The Image Editor (talk) 21:44, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I think that image is quite a good depiction of bond era Connery which is probably what people will most associate him with in years to come. I will change it momentarily. Llewee (talk) 23:04, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
Is that image really copyright free, the PD-notice on Commons says that it is for works published with no copyright notices before 1977. But the film from which is taken, Marnie (1964), was most likely published with the copyright of Universal. Gotitbro (talk) 11:00, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Coat of arms

I added a section about his coat of arms which was removed by another user because they thought that social media was not a good enough source. I would argue that the official Facebook page of the Court of the Lord Lyon (the Scottish heraldic authority) is a perfectly reputable source especially since Connery's coat of arms was granted by the Lord Lyon. I think details about his coat of arms should be present because it's not only an interesting detail about him, but it also shows how he was honoured by the Crown and the high regard that the Lord Lyon held him in by granting him heraldic supporters. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ff462 (talkcontribs) 23:13, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Sean Connery was NOT the first actor to play Bond on film. Sean Connery is usually called the original James Bond. But Barry Nelson actually played 007 some eight years before 1962's Dr. No hit the big screen, starring in an hour-long episode of the live American teleplay series Climax!

Incorrect caption under photo: his mother's maiden name was McLean (please note spelling); she was not a member of the MacLeod Clan.

The caption under one of the photos reads as follows: "Connery at a Tartan Day celebration in Washington, D.C. When knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000 he wore a green-and-black tartan kilt of his mother's MacLeod clan." Sean Connery's mother's maiden name was McLean (please note spelling), please see the first paragraph under "Early Life"; hence, she was a member of the Clan Maclean (the official spelling of the Clan, one of the many ways of spelling the name), she was NOT a member of the MacLeod Clan. The green-and-black tartan kilt which Sean is wearing in the photo is one of the 2 tartans of the Clan Maclean, known as the "Hunting Tartan." He is NOT wearing a MacLeod tartan kilt. If you Google the tartans of the Clan Maclean and the tartans of the Clan MacLeod, you will easily be able to verify this. The caption under the photo needs to be corrected to reflect the fact that Sean is wearing the green-and-black tartan kilt of his mother's Maclean Clan (not the MacLeod Clan).

Why isn't there one? For starters, Connery's Personal life section is quite bloated and could be thinned out by moving existing references to his views and abuse to their own section. Under section “Death” remove “with dementia as an underlying cause,” as it is not founded in the cited source nor the death certificate scan obtained by TMZ. Also the previous sentence provides enough verification of his condition at the time of death. 2601:19B:B80:E810:583B:45F5:55B2:3026 (talk) 00:56, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

James Bond being Scot is not taken from Connery

James Bonds identity comes from Fleming and Fleming's father was a Scot.RichardBond (talk) 06:53, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

You need to cite a reliable source stating that. DonQuixote (talk) 12:10, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Sean alliterates with Seamas

The source clearly says that Sean alliterates with Seamas. The article's use of "assonance" is wrong.--Jack Upland (talk) 00:24, 6 July 2022 (UTC) See the source: [4].--Jack Upland (talk) 08:25, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

I think it is quite important to add a Filmography graph and section above or below his Death and Legacy section, whichever is standard. Also acceptable would be a hyperlink to a separate page containing his filmography, as some of the larger actor's pages do when they have a substantial amount of work to cover. It is common to look on Wikipedia to see what movie's a certain actor has starred in, and Sean Connery's page is missing this honestly basic and standard inclusion. Sean Connery filmography is the first link in the Career section. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:58, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

George Lazenby was first Bond! 2601:1C0:4400:D3F:1032:81D9:28A8:2960 (talk) 15:55, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

You need to cite a reputable source that states that. As of now, all reputable sources state that he's not even the second actor to portray Bond (Casino Royale (1967 film)). DonQuixote (talk) 16:36, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
