Added Kyokushin
[edit]I added an extra paragraph on Ryu's martial art as actually being Kyokushin than Shotokan and stated some facts on it

Origin
[edit]There is a lot of talk about sumerian lineage in siberia russia towards the central asian states, ryu is obviously from Japan, the Hokkaido prefecture. Once again, chun li being of british descent maybe from shanghi or hongkong is not common to have an aryan appearance in eastern culture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mvdc1980 (talk • contribs) 02:18, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
- What's the point of this? The article already says Ryu is of Japanese descent. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 02:51, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Ryu (disambiguation)
[edit]I would like ot have a link to the various uses and the name origin page. I added a Ryu link earlier but it was removed by User:Izno for it "seems to detract rather than enhance" which I disagree with, as it is normal for Wikipedia on other pages to link to various origins or meanings of a character or name. Though, I admit, it may be done better than just with a mere additional link, as example the traditional way of adding /about/ link for the Ryu disambiguation page above the page, as I believe it would make sense for Ryu as character from Street Fighter to do that. (and who is already listed under Ryu as a character named as such there) As I am pretty new to editing Wiki I decided to open a discussion about this to see what others think of it instead of just reimplementing the link as it was earlier, and see if the more experienced users have a better idea to implement the connection to the Ryu page. 37.191.5.234 (talk) 12:43, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Ryu "Hoshi"?
[edit]This is the current first sentence of the page:
Ryu Hoshi, born on 20th of September, 1964, also known as Ryu (リュウ), also written as Ryū in the original Street Fighter, known simply as Fighting Street, is a Japanese karate-like fictional character and the protagonist in the Capcom's Street Fighter franchise.
Should the surname "Hoshi" be mentioned in this sentence? It's only used in the movie and the USA Cartoon show. I'm not sure. Whoever keeps adding it there keeps citing that exact reason why it should be on there. Who's correct? Crboyer (talk) 18:58, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
I think I found my answer per WP:BOLDTITLE.Crboyer (talk) 19:03, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Oyama / Aoyama
[edit]"Ryu's character was inspired by Mas Oyama as game designer Takashi Nishiyama was a fan of his. The character originates from the kung fu series Karate Master by Ikki Kajiwara. As a child, Nishiyama enjoyed watching Ichidai's animated series, which was influenced by Aoyama's life. Nishiyama was impressed by Aoyama's martial arts skill and philosophies, which inspired him to create the first Street Fighter game. While Ryu was based on Oyama,"
Are Oyama and Aoyama the same person? Is this something that you can do with Japanese* names? Even if it is, it's pretty confusing. *: I know he's Korean but he appears to have adopted a Japanese name.Dhalamh (talk) 15:56, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
Reversion of detail on Japanese symbols on Ryu's belt and gloves
[edit]I would like to discuss the reversion of my recent edit to the page to include information on the Japanese symbols that appear on Ryu's belt and gloves. I was researching this last night and it took me a little while to find the information out. After finding out the information, I thought to include it on the Ryu Wikipedia page as I didn't find it on Wikipedia. It was reverted with a comment of "Really unimportant" by Tintor2. I beg to differ. This is exactly the kind of information that someone may either a) be exactly what they were looking for or b) find interesting. The new mr (talk) 12:37, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
- What does it say about the character? Did a designer comment on that? Did a game journalist mention the parts? I believe there has not been word at all about Ryu's glove. If you want to add it, then find a reliable source with such information.Tintor2 (talk) 12:54, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
- Do we need a source where someone like that has mentioned? Official artwork shows these symbols on his belt and gloves. Including the character art of his Wikipedia page. The new mr (talk) 21:49, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
- Wep. That's pretty much a need of the rules wp:verifiability and avoiding wp:fancruft. Unless such bits are notable within the media or the creators, there is no need to mention them as it already seen in the image.Tintor2 (talk) 22:33, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
- From the page on wp:fancruft: "Thus, use of this term may be regarded as pejorative, and when used in discussion about another editor's contributions, it can sometimes be regarded as uncivil." I don't regard this as fancruft at all. You said "unless such bit are notable within the media" and they are. As I mentioned, it is right there in the image at the top of the Wikipedia page. Both on his belt and his gloves. The new mr (talk) 15:58, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
- That's how redundant it is. There is no need to describe an image unless you write its alt Tintor2 (talk) 19:27, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
- But it's not just a description of the image. It's not just saying "There are Japanese symbols for wind, forest, fire and mountain on his belt and gloves" but actually enlightening the reader to the fact that the Japanese symbols are the Fūrinkazan: an element of Japanese history and goes back to the Sun Tzu's Art of War. A very interesting and cool piece of information by all accounts. Wouldn't you agree? The new mr (talk) 08:07, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
- Since no response received, am requesting a third opinion. The new mr (talk) 10:03, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- Came here for the requested third opinion. Personally, I think the detail is interesting even to non-fans, and should be included somwehere. We're talking about writing/art that's boldly emblazoned on a major characters' outfit. But it needs RS cited, such as this article from GamesRadar. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 15:13, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- That seems like a good sourced but GamesRadar specifically used Wikipedia as whatever the words in Ryu's clothing come from.Tintor2 (talk) 21:27, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
How about this Boing Boing article, then?Nevermind, this is not regarding his attire. I'll keep looking. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 21:51, 1 September 2021 (UTC)- Here is a source I believe qualifies, mentioning the belt, at least. I think with this, combined with the many people who can read the characters, there is enough to include this. Anyone coming to Ryu's article has some kind of interest or curiosity about the character, and thus may want to know what the character's essential outfit is communicating. Unless you can raise a strong objection, I will re-include. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 17:24, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks very much Pyrrho the Skeptic for your third opinion. I'm glad you agree and thanks for finding some sources that can be cited. Let me know if you'd like me to add it back in. The new mr (talk) 08:36, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
- I would say be bold but I wonder if we should create a subsection named design since it kinda is turning too big.Tintor2 (talk) 11:27, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
- Seems like a good idea to me. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 16:04, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
- I added a section and a few design details. If the section feels to short, I suppose it could be added somewhere else, or the section could be expanded. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 20:34, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- I like the inclusion. Reads well and fits in perfectly with the rest of it. Thanks! 👍 The new mr (talk) 09:19, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Ryu's fighting style
[edit]There have been edits to this article which say that Ryu uses Taekwondo based moves rather than Karate. I can't verify anything since the source is dead while the other one is just printed. Can anybody revise this please?Tintor2 (talk) 11:31, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- There has been persistent vandalism regarding this. I requested protection but that expired, so now the vandal is back. We can request further protection, if necessary. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 18:32, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
@(Oinkers42):: My mistake for undoing your edits (feel free to add back), which were not vandalism, but I was restoring the article to a version before the other vandalism edits to the fighting style which have been persistent on this article, and the edit history is becoming convoluted, with good-faith edits in between multiple vandal edits. I have requested further page protection. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 16:15, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

Ryu (Street Fighter) → Ryu – I'm not sure how this works, But I think this character comes up when people are searching for Ryu. 2605:B100:15F:94B:A931:7D76:8E2B:288B (talk) 01:16, 18 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose according to Wikinav data, 33% of the outgoing views from the dab page go to Ryu (Street Fighter), against 24% for Japanese dragon, and about 7% each for Ryu (school) and Yoo (Korean name). Ryu (Street Fighter) and Japanese dragon also have similar numbers of overall page views [1]. The Street Fighter character thus fails WP:PT1 (
much more likely than any other single topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined
). 59.149.117.119 (talk) 01:54, 18 October 2024 (UTC) - Oppose move. Although Ryu (SF) is the most common topic, he doesn't beat all other topics combined. O.N.R. (talk) 02:12, 18 October 2024 (UTC)
- '''Comment''' Was Ryu's last name Hoshi canon in the games like how Nash went to Charlie and then to Charlie Nash? Tintor2 (talk) 12:05, 18 October 2024 (UTC)
- Support Thought I was gonna oppose this, to be honest, but per WP:USEENGLISH, the Street Fighter character is indeed the primary topic for the word "Ryu" when used in English. Generally, people in the West won't type in "Ryu" to search for dragon. While there is also Ryu Hayabusa, he gets significantly fewer page views. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 06:04, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose per Wikinav data and per O.N.R. Unless I’m missing something, WP:USEENGLISH tells us why the Japanese dragon article has its title but UE doesn’t settle the primary topic question.--MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk 00:45, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose per the IP's arguments. Ryu is not the primary topic over many of these other subjects. The disambiguator is fine and I see no need to move this. Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 03:08, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
