Hello. "In March 2007, Roblox became compliant with COPPA, with the addition of safe chat, a change that limited users under the age of thirteen to communicating by selecting predefined messages from a menu." This was accurate for a decent period of time, but as of recently, users under 13 are instead given a whitelisted chat; i.e., they have the same chat interface as normal users, but both the messages they send and the ones they see have a far more strict filter applied than the one of over 13 users, whose chats are only filtered partially or completely when a word is perceived to be on the blacklist or contains a large string of numbers (likely to avoid users distributing personal info, such as their phone numbers). Users under 13 can not type any numbers at all without filter workarounds, the most popular current one being placing "ss" before a number (e.g. ss200). Words that are not on the whitelist are not necessarily inappropriate; for example, the adjective "fluorinated" appears as "###########" to <13 users.

tl;dr: Update chat filtering information to reflect this change (under 13 being given a whitelist rather than a more strict menu of dialogue options). 75.88.0.108 (talk) 12:37, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

The following text is from one of several sources cited in the article:

... This led [Baszucki] to start working on a new project in 2004 that would also involve its users in the development work. Baszucki started working on a new project and founded DynaBlocks with Erik Cassel. ... Later in 2005, the company was rebranded as Roblox. The official launch of the company and its website took place in 2006. ...

I haven't seen any sources suggesting that 2002 was when it was named Roblox, so a change in the article to suggest this would require reliable sources.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 08:57, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

I believe that the IP user is referring to the User Generated Content[1] (UGC) update, which went effective on August 15th 2019. This update allows users that had previously worked with ROBLOX (i.e. interns) to create their own accessories and add them into the ROBLOX items catalog. Since usually interns do not receive administrator rights after their stint, this merits an edit to reflect the change. AmielkpoTalk 06:52, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
This has been requested many times before, and in the archives of the talk page I have made a number of replies expressing why I'm hesitant to add it to the article, but I've just now added it because I was at least able to find that the company made an official blog post (which is a better primary source than just a Developer Forum thread, though I've cited both). I hope this satisfies the editors who believed this should be mentioned.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 15:54, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

I’m unsure about actually removing the Mount & Blade comparison, simply because 680,000 concurrent players is not very much by Adopt Me! standards. Suspected incorrect statement about popularity

Hello

« As of July 2020, half of all children aged 8-12 in the United States play Roblox weekly »

I seriously doubt that statement.

The source seems to be a commercial presentation, but not from Roblox themselves.

I find no other matching information online.

Is that possible to fact check this ? Can someone help me to do this ?

Best regards Fanfanmeu (talk) 07:34, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Why would I ping you? Did you add it? I didn't look for who did. -- ferret (talk) 15:19, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
To continue on why this is removed, we don't know how Dubit came up with this number, and there's no official numbers from Roblox to back it. More importantly, Roblox does not release any statistics about the ages of players behind accounts, as that would potentially be illegal or at best a legal liability. At best this is an estimate, and long standing consensus across the project is to not report statistics as if it's official data. It certainly doesn't belong in the lead, as that's undue coverage of an unofficial factoid reported by a single source and with no official backing. -- ferret (talk) 15:25, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Seconded, for these very reasons. Sergecross73 msg me 15:39, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

They just seem to be a generic data company with a focus on children’s media, having read the report. They do say at the end of the report that “Various Roblox developers and influencers” contributed to the project, which does explain a couple odd things in the report, but I’m not seeing any evidence that Roblox Corp. had anything to do with the report, and since it recommends flooding the platform with brand games to overpower independent creators, I doubt that those developers and influencers had a lot of influence over the content. If that happened, the article would just get vandalised again. The games are sourced to reliable secondary sources, and are definitely the most important part of Roblox, as they are the actual thing people use the most. Devonian Wombat (talk) 23:31, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Yes, but people with 9 and less edits cannot edit the page. And yes, the games are reliably sourced on the Roblox website, but don't need a article here on Wikipedia.148.74.247.125 (talk) 15:08, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

I promise, we are aware of how the protection levels work, and ECP is unfortunately necessary on this article. The brief list of top games may need some culling but most appear to be sourced to secondary sources, which is what we need to show some degree of import. -- ferret (talk) 15:19, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
Briefly mentioning some of the top games on this article is the best option at the moment; there's enough information about them to demonstrate that they have at least some notability, but not quite enough that they could all be their own articles.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 09:27, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Should Roblox Studio be in bold?

Devonian Wombat (talk · contribs · count) has reverted my edits are placing the first mention of Roblox Studio in bold and I am frankly confused. I backed up my decision by saying (per MOS:BOLD#OTHER) that as there is a redirect to the section, following the principle of least astonishment, "Roblox Studio" should be placed in bold. However both my edits were reverted as "MOS:BOLD is satisfied". I fail to understand what this means, as clearly it wasn't. As said in MOS:BOLD: To follow the "principle of least astonishment" after following a redirect, for terms in the first couple of paragraphs of an article, or at the beginning of a section of an article, which are the subjects of redirects to the article or section (for example, subtopics of the article's topic, rather than the synonyms as already boldfaced per the above). I am interested to get Devonian Wombat and others' opinions on this subject. — Yours, Berrely • TalkContribs 12:45, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Yes, as in, bolding is done per "the principle of least astonishment", or WP:SURPRISE, however, since we already have titled the section "Roblox Studio", there is literally no point in bolding it. All it serves is to make the article look worse. There is already extremely strong precedent for taking this approach, as we can see, for example, over at Minecraft the topic of Minecraft Classic is a redirect that goes to a section, but Minecraft Classic is not bolded in that article. Orc (Middle-Earth) serves as a redirect to a section, but no text is bolded there. Quite simply, what you are proposing is just not how things are done. Edit suggestion for Roblox [Confirmed Protected Edit Request]

Roblox was created in 2003 due to the website creation dates of dynablocks and goblox , and that the company was not rebranded to Roblox in 2005, it has been Roblox since 2004, sufficient evidence proves this SEE: https://web.archive.org/web/20060622025054/http://roblox .com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=10 [the site was blocked by the spam filter]. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Donutprotection (talkcontribs) 22:34, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

We have to reflect secondary sources here, see WP:OR. Domain registration dates don't tell you when a company was founded (only when someone had an idea for a name). The article already shows a "The first Roblox logo, designed in 2004" so the name had some used then, but we only say "The company changed its name". – Thjarkur (talk) 07:57, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Does it matter that this article was created and edited by Roblox staff?

Briguy9876 (creator of the page) was a former super moderator, and Gordonrox24 (started editing page in 2009) a former admin. Former Creative Director Shedletsky was also involved in the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Roblox. Though these edits are many years old at this point, isn't it still a violation of the Wikimedia ToU? "These Terms of Use prohibit engaging in deceptive activities, including misrepresentation of affiliation, impersonation, and fraud." It seems like misrepresentation of affiliation went on, and the number of editors who worked at Roblox—including the page's creator—may suggest possible payment for these edits to happen. Should we also add a default female Roblox avatar picture?

Like there is a default male Roblox avatar in the article already 🌸 1.Ayana 🌸 (talk) 11:59, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

I actually don't know if also adding a female avatar would violate WP:NFCC, I personally think that using both would violate it, since the male avatar already shows what Roblox avatars look like, but I'm no expert on that stuff. Devonian Wombat (talk) 04:41, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
I understand NFCC but also it is kind of sexist to just have 1 gender of avatar on this page 🌸 1.Ayana 🌸 (talk) 19:57, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
Adding a female Roblox avatar would violate a few rules of WP:NFCC. The image would most likely get deleted if it was uploaded, even if it would be seen as sexist or not. Npthura (talk) 22:23, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
There's a simple solution. Create an image of both avatars side by side, then use that one singular image. -- ferret (talk) 23:54, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
Or use {{Multiple image}} — Yours, Berrely • TalkContribs 18:18, 11 September 2020 (UTC)
We should wait and see if Roblox removes the gendered signup process again first (they had temporarily removed it recently but then they brought it back for some reason). If they add back the androgynous default avatar and remove the gender options from the signup page again, then the image of the male avatar should be replaced with an image of the new androgynous avatar. --WhatShouldBeDoneHmm (talk) 22:28, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
Update, I checked Roblox's signup page again, and choosing gender is now optional. I think we should replace the male avatar image with an image (or group of images with {{Multiple image}}) showing all three default avatars: genderless, female, and male (and probably in that order). That way WP:NFCC rules aren't violated. Somebody just needs to get the avatars to upload and make an edit request. --WhatShouldBeDoneHmm (talk) 20:11, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

Roblox now uses its own fork of Lua 5.1, named Luau. It notably supports type checking, faster performance, backwards compatibility, more sandboxing, and is planned to support parallel execution. This is specifically important because the Google knowledge panel for Roblox still shows that Lua is used. More info on the latest updates to Luau and its history can be found here: https://roblox.github.io/luau/.

Specifically, change "Lua" to "Luau" where appropriate to reflect the change (Lua is mentioned twice in the article). This may require the sources to be edited to reflect the transition as well. Notable sources include: https://roblox.github.io/luau/ https://roblox.github.io/luau/why AwesomePossum212 (talk) 17:33, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

I would provide the original announcement from the company, but the domain roblox.com is banned. Is there a way to circumvent this to provide the source? Otherwise, searching up 'Luau Recap October 2020' or 'How to Plan a Luau: Augmenting Lua’s Syntax With Types' should show the sources, directly from the company itself. In addition, roblox.github.io is the company's repository (as opposed to just a random wiki page mentioning Luau). It includes elements like the style guide, open source projects, and more. Similar to how Discourse's article cites GitHub in multiple places relating to company technology. AwesomePossum212 (talk) 16:32, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
@AwesomePossum212:, we are rarely interested in what companies have to say about themselves except in trivial ways or for simple data. You need to present a reliable, independent source to show that there is a new programming language and that this is a significant change. Changing stuff in a development environment is usually only notable if it changes the user experience or development cycle. I hope that helps. Edit request.

Since I saw another user unsuccessfully make an edit request relating to the roblox game "Arsenal" due to not providing a source I can provide a few sources. Firstly the page for the game itself: https://www.rooblox.com/games/286090429/Arsenal (Remove an O from the URL to access the page.) And then popular Roblox youtubers have also provided coverage of the game. Such as this video by Youtuber "Dennis": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UdQt2_LvUQ Of course I know WP do not consider Youtube to be reliable but can the official page for the game be considered reliable enough to warrant inclusion? Another sources to mention would also be the developers official Twitter page: https://twitter.com/ROLVeStuff again I know WP don't like Twitter either but again I do not see any harm in it since it is the devs official account. I started to look into this, and I'm not sure we should be changing anything. Roblox's actual website hasn't been updated yet, and this is touted as the logo for "Roblox Studio". Is it a company logo? The logo for the development software? The logo used on the page should be the one presents for the game client. -- ferret (talk) 13:15, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
@Ferret Roblox Studio is a product developed by Roblox for creating games on its framework. It is its own application, seperate from Roblox. It would make sense for a new page about studio, but I'm not sure whether it passes notability guidelines. The Roblox developer forum has been updated with the new logo, in the "2D" version devforum.roblox.com/ (roblox.com is blacklisted so I can't directly link it). — Yours, Berrely • TalkContribs 15:23, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Right, so I don't think we should update a logo here on this article at this time. I don't believe the development program itself is independently notable though. Roblox is a weird topic though. -- ferret (talk) 15:25, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Splitting off Roblox Corporation

Looking over the article, I'm noticing a disconnect between the content about the actual video game Roblox, and the content about the company of the Roblox Corporation. The information about Roblox Corp. becoming a publicly listed company, as well as the stuff around its evaluation, is starting to bloat the article somewhat. As such, I reckon it would be a good idea to split off information about the Roblox Corporation into its own seperate article, leaving this article solely about the platform. Thoughts? Devonian Wombat (talk) 22:40, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

@IceWelder: might have some thoughts here with his work on corporate articles. -- ferret (talk) 22:55, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
This will be worth a shot if there is enough information available. There have been a lot of sources regarding the IPO, so notability is likely. This would help sever the game and non-development-related aspects. At the very least, it could be a secluded section outside of the game's development history, as is currently the case. I might draw up a draft in the coming days. Regards, IceWelder [] 20:15, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Adopt Me! Main article: Adopt Me! Adopt Me! is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game where the nominal focus is players pretending to be either parents adopting a child, or children getting adopted, though the de facto focus is around adopting and caring for many different pets, who can be traded with other players.[81] One of Robloxes biggest moment is when the "Dress Your Pets" update launched on the game "Adopt Me". The game reached over 1 million concurrent players and reaching an all time high of 1.6 million players, the most Roblox had ever had. This in turn crashed the Roblox servers. Many Roblox players wanted "Adopt Me" to be banned from Roblox.[121] As of July 2020, the game had been played upwards of ten billion times.[82] Adopt Me! was averaging 600,000 concurrent players as of June 2020, making it the most popular game on Roblox.[81] Due to the high cost of pets within the game, with some rare pets selling for up to US$100, a large subculture of scammers has risen up within the game. As the primary user base of Adopt Me! is on average younger than the rest of Roblox, they are especially susceptible to falling for scams.[83][84] DreamCraft, the organization behind the game, has accumulated over $16 million in revenue, mostly from microtransactions.[85][86]

The thing I'm talking about is the addition of the Rthro style for players character (known as Robloxians). I'm not sure if there is actual controversy related to the addition of this because I have no clue where I would start looking. There's a chance that it's just me and a few other people hating how it looks and it's not very controversial at all. Tix under virtual currency

Roblox used to have a second, free, virtual currency known as Tickets (commonly abbreviated to Tix), which was an alternative to Robux that players would earn a set amount once a day. While Robux required you to have a paid membership to earn it Tix was earned by all players. Roblox removed it sometime in I think 2014 although I could be wrong since its been a while since it happened. I feel like Tix should be added to the Virtual Currency section of the articles. Or it could be a part of a separate sub section of Virtual Currency which would be "Defunct Virtual Currency". But I do think information on Tix should be added. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry and Wikipedia Editor (talk) 20:35, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Roblox Games Should Be Their Own Articles.

I think that Roblox gams should be their own articles. Yes, they may be a bit short, but they're still they're own game, technically. Roblox isn't a game, it's a gaming platform. Steam's games have they're own articles. You can play Roblox games, spend money, interact with that games' specific community like any other game. Idk, may just be me. Pain is fantastic (talk) 15:42, 13 March 2021 (UTC)

I don't think so. THere are tons of games on Roblox. If we were to make a page for every single one there would be millions of stubs and copies of articles because some games are literal copies. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry and Wikipedia Editor (talk) 19:18, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

I agree with Blaze the Wolf. Most of them will be stubs and a lot of them will get deleated form Wikipedia. Also, a lot of them need reliable sources in order for the pages to stay on Wikipedia. It's better if we don't make Roblox game pages on Wikipedia until they have reliable sources. JennilyW (talk) 19:57, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

AEGIS International

AEGIS International is a military-based game on Roblox that takes place in the year 2175. The war of resources has left millions of deaths, cities in ruins, and skies in ashes. The survivors, left without a choice, fight for food and resources, dividing into militias to try to survive the nuclear winter. AEGIS International is mostly Roleplay (RP)-based but there is action and fun into playing it. The creator of the game is dylanjkl as that is their Roblox username. In the AEGIS Border game, you will find yourself outside in the wasteland, you're defended by walls surrounding you 360°. If you head to the Mian Gate without running then you'll survive, remember if you run near the Main Gate the Junior Operative+'s in the two side towers guarding the Main Gate will shoot you to death or a Masked Delta Force, AEGIS Research Division Member, or a Peacekeeper Special Forces posted at or around the main gate will shoot you to death as well. Once you arrive safely at the Main Gate you'll see that it will be open or closed, if it is open then that means it is Protocol Processing, and you will be processed through the facility. If the Main Gate is closed then it is not protocol processing and you will have to suck it up, remember AEGIS International is not a group to be messed with as they're very serious and they have over 60K+ active members.

Adopt me:

Adopt me is one of the most popular games right now in roblox, it has over 400k players at any time usually , this is a role-play game in which you can make a family and adopt pets by hatching eggs, T he spring update just came too.

Tower defense simulator: This is a game that is not in the front page very often as it usually only gets 5000-6000 players at a time , but it is still a really fun strategy game , also there is a new update coming on 6/5/2021. Also , if you need screenshots on any of these games , just friend request me on roblox and ill add pictures , my user is mynameisppq. Anonymous123456mnop (talk) 04:40, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Splitting Proposal

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
Essentially a SNOW split here. The work has been done by Panini. The split content is at List of Roblox games and I have added the proposed inclusion criteria to the talk page. -- ferret (talk) 14:02, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

I propose that the entirety of the section Popular Games be split into its own list article. I don't see the reason to list every single popular game on the Roblox page, however it shouldn't be straight up removed because they've all had reliable coverage outside of Roblox. Currently, the entire section makes up around 15k bytes of the article which is huge. If you think about it, it's similar to how we don't list all the popular levels of Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2. While none of the popular levels have received much coverage (outside of youtubers making videos on them which is not reliable), it makes no sense why a page for Roblox's popular games not be made into a list article. While this has not happened yet, if more games on Roblox that become popular receive coverage outside of Roblox, it will start to look rather messy in the article. • Support Right now, at least on my screen, "Popular games" is about one third of the total readable prose. This does suggest we're running up against an undue weight situation, especially if sourcing is found for 2-3 more games. Many of the games here have been merged because of AFDs, as they don't have enough content to stand on their own but there's enough reliable sourcing to write a paragraph up. That said we'll be doing so because of the perceived WEIGHT issue, not a PAGESIZE issue. This page does not meet WP:SIZERULE recommendations for splitting. Now, the important part: I recommend List of Roblox games with an initial inclusion criteria that all entries must have reliable secondary sourcing to avoid any flood of random game entries with primary sourcing. The list should easily meet WP:LISTN, which is the main reason I'm supporting the split. Example source from just 3 weeks ago here, so fresh sources are still being generated. -- ferret (talk) 21:41, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
I agree that we need an inclusion criteria. Otherwise, the entire popular games section on Roblox could go into that list, which is 'way too many games. That doesn't even include the "sponsored" games that appear no matter what list you're in. Some of those games tend to just be scams. But yes, having reliable secondary sourcing would be a good idea. Couple of suggestions

I think the caption on the image of Roblox's 2006-2017 logo should be changed to say something like:

The Roblox logo from 2017; it was the latest in a series of numerous variations of the same design, the first of which became the game's logo in 2006.

The current description implies that the Roblox logo looked exactly like that in 2006 and that there were some variations of that version throughout the years.

In the "History and development" section, it says:

On May 31, 2015, a feature called 'Smooth Terrain' was added, increasing the graphical fidelity of the terrain and changing the physics engine from a block-oriented style to a smoother and more realistic style.

This doesn't make sense. How does a physics engine have a "block-oriented style"? Whoever added this was likely referring to the terrain. I suggest changing this part to:

On May 31, 2015, a feature called 'Smooth Terrain' was added, increasing the graphical fidelity of the terrain and changing the style of the terrain from a block-oriented style to a smoother and more realistic style. The older version of terrain, retroactively referred to as 'Legacy Terrain', was removed in January 2017; all instances of Legacy Terrain were automatically converted to Smooth Terrain after this update.

Do we REALLY need Extended Autoconfirmed?

I understand that this is a popular article, but I disagree with it needing extended autoconfirmed protection. Many big articles, such as New York City or George Bush do not have extended autoconfirmed, but rather regular autoconfirmed protection. I find it frivolous that a children's game needs an extended autoconfirmed article, especially when many people who want to edit can't because of this poor choice. I am not saying that this article doesn't need any protection, I'm just saying that the moderators need to rethink extended autoconfirmed protection on this article when many bigger, prominent, and more important articles have only autoconfirmed protection and are just fine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SlugStream (talkcontribs) 17:21, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

I support that this articles protection should be changed back to semi-protection. I don't understand why it had to be indef ECP it could have simply been set to 1 year then it would expire. If we can get consensus on weather this article should go back to semiprotect then that would be great. Slender (talk) 18:54, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Many big articles aren't rampant and frequent targets of long-term abuse users who understand how to circumvent semiprotection. It isn't about whether they are big, popular articles or not, it's about whether someone is deliberately targetting them. It was applied for a reason. As for why it's indef, you cannot set ECP to expire and fall back to Indefinite Semiprotect. If the ECP expires, it goes back to no protection at all. Every time we have attempted to reduce protection, the issues have reoccurred. We didn't arrive here on a whim. You're both welcome to make edit requests. -- ferret (talk) 20:49, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

I just thought now. What if we were to put pending changes protection to this page? That way good faith users can edit whilst we can hide the vandalism. Slender (talk) 06:19, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Pending changes is for articles with low levels of disruption that can be easily reviewed. This page has massive traffic. If you have an edit to request, you're welcome to do so. The protection level isn't going to change, so it'd be best to get to requesting. -- ferret (talk) 12:45, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Needless to say that there's no way to make an article out of this, but there are a shocking number of secondary sources describing the current outage due to how long they've been down, so we could maybe find a way to write a sentence about it. I don't really know where a sentence about one outage would fit in, though. I'll have to read some of the news articles to see if there's anything with enduring relevance. A few months from now we can't expect that anyone will still be interested in Roblox being unreachable for ~24 hours; even if the outage goes on for 48+ hours, I don't think that's something so important to Roblox that it needs to be mentioned on an article broadly describing the topic. If anything more interesting comes out of this / gets mentioned in RS, then we could consider adding it.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 20:51, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

The current wording of "at least" twenty-four hours is technically not wrong, but you're right that it's a bit imprecise now that it's approaching forty-eight hours (as of writing this it's been about 43). Sources are still publishing new articles about the multi-day outage, so I'll tweak the wording once there are sources to verify the claim that it went on for at least two full days, so probably later tonight. Hello! So I"m here to ask why the image description for the newest logo said it was used from 2017 to 2019. That logo still appears to be used so is there some new variation of it that was put out in 2019? If not then why does the description basically say it was no longer used after 2019. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:24, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

The 2019 version no longer uses the color red. According to their press kit, "The Roblox logo should always be used to the exact proportions and colors for which it was designed. [...] The logo color should also be treated in either black or white." It then proceeds to say (in all capital letters even) "DO NOT USE THE RED LOGO" and goes on to specify the company's color palette, which includes blue, white, black, and many shades of silver, but no red. This should hopefully answer your question. Cheers!  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 18:05, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

macOS release date

Hello! So I"m attempting to find the release date for macOS and I've only managed to find one place that has the release date... although it can't be used as a source since it's a Fandom Wiki. Anyone know where I might be able to find the macOS release date? The date that was on the Fandom Wiki is stated as "October 2016" although it doesn't provide a source for said date (which most Fandom Wikis forego the use of sources for backing up info) if that might help narrow down the search. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:09, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure 2016 is wrong. This interview from 2013 mentions Roblox being on Mac (and iOS) already. -- ferret (talk) 18:47, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

No longer working on the section about the People Make Games exposes

As I've stated before, dealing with sexual abuse makes me really anxious and paranoid, and for the sake of my mental health, I'd like to let go of any obligations by not editing it any further. I request that you also add onto the following: "Although Roblox has received generally positive reviews from critics, it has faced criticism for its moderation, microtransactions, and alleged exploitative practices directed toward children".

You should extend it by also adding support after moderation because the support team is very controversial and bad. You should also mention that moderation is outsourced from India.

Example of what you could add

"Although Roblox has received generally positive reviews from critics, it has faced criticism for its moderation (which is outsourced from India), support microtransactions, and alleged exploitative practices directed toward children". Startrooper2345 (talk) 23:39, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Add the following text after "In July 2022, a 4 GB archive of internal documents related to the platform's creators, including personal data, were leaked by an unidentified hacker. Roblox stated "[t]hese stolen documents were illegally obtained as part of an extortion scheme that we refused to cooperate with."[67]"

Text to be added below

"On July 18, 2022, and July 19, 2022, many accounts were falsely banned because of a vulnerability in Roblox’s chat and moderation system. These bans and terminations take place after playing malicious experiences. According to some reports, this vulnerability has existed as far back as 2016, but the first confirmed report comes from November 2021. If a player joins one of the stated experiences, the game would forge the player's chatlogs, fooling the moderation systems into believing that the player in question said extremely innapropriate content, resulting in a ban varying from 1 day to a complete account deletion, when in reality, the player was innocent. Alternate accounts would be IP banned. The issue has been going on since Early 2022, multiple games were created in July or June. If a player was succesfully banned by the hackers, they would be greeted with a empty moderator note and multiple offensive items with the reported text. Reports begun to surface that the experience sends user information to a Discord server, including the player’s username and password. If the player's account isn't terminated after joining the experience, that account may be compromised by people in that Discord server. Methods of going to the experiences include a player sending a link, which is the most common. On July 19, 2022, the Plugin for Kohl’s Admin was affected by the vulnerability, and games with this plugin would teleport players to the above experiences. Scripth fixed the exploit the next day. The model for Kohl's admin was unaffected. On that same day, Roblox took notice of this and immediately banned accounts and their games that falsely banned victims of this incident, threatening legal action if they continued to exploit the vulnerability." Starting on July 18, 2022, many accounts were banned because of a vulnerability in Roblox’s chat and moderation system. These bans and terminations take place after playing specific experiences, one of the more notable ones being Crosswoods [A.2]. According to some reports, this vulnerability has existed as far back as 2016, but the first confirmed report comes from November 2021. If a player joins one of the stated experiences, the game would forge the player's chatlogs, fooling the moderation systems into believeing that the player in question said extremely innapropriate content (racial/LGBT slurs, death threats, unspeakable acts, etc.) resulting in a ban varying from 1 day to a complete account deletion. Alternate accounts would be IP banned. The issue has been going on since Early 2022, multiple games were created in July or June. Joey Kuras, the actual creator.

Mr. Tallarico, who's been known to be something of an absolute braggart, lied about the creation of the "Oof" sound. http://joeykuras.com/credits/ https://venturebeat.com/2019/06/22/robloxs-famous-oof-death-sound-allegedly-came-from-a-tommy-tallarico-game/ Here is evidence and articles which should sufficiently prove this. The only credit that Tallarico potentally has is the ownership of the sound library, as Joey Kuras was an employee of Tallarico Studios at the time of Messiah's creation. 2601:540:8200:135:2B28:91AD:BE72:32B8 (talk) 02:45, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

While the latter article does state that the audio file is credited to Kuras, it also states that Kuras and Tallarico have collaborated, so it would be original research to use these sources to state that Tallarico is trying to steal credit from Kuras. All we can state as a matter of fact is that the Roblox Corporation and Tallarico entered a dispute regarding the well-known "oof" sound effect, and that it resulted the platform removing the sound.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 23:17, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
I've slightly modified the language to clarify that the creation of the audio file is credited to Tallarico Studios (the original wording claimed that it was produced by Tallarico himself). I'll still want more secondary sources before going further and publishing a version that reads that it was created by Joey Kuras because many sources published around the time of the dispute between Tallarico and Roblox don't clarify this well enough, but the new language is at least more accurate based on the information we have readily available.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 02:27, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Seperate article for Roblox Studio

I created a section on the talk page for the Roblox Studio redirect. I think that this is a discussion worth viewing, as the game engine seems notable enough for a seperate article. slo double 4 (talk) 18:58, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Respectfully, the way Wikipedia determines which articles are notable enough for inclusion is through the use of reliable, secondary sources. Secondary meaning that the source must be separate from the subject itself. It looks like the only sources in your draft Roblox Studio article are primary ones, such as the Luau website and Luau GitHub repository. If you could find online articles written about Roblox Studio itself as a game engine, that would help to establish the independent notability of Roblox Studio as a subject. As of right now, it seems that Roblox Studio is a topic inseparable from Roblox itself. One way a topic can merit splitting from a main article is if the sub-section about the topic gets long enough that it'd help the reader to split it off into a new page, but the section on Roblox Studio here is only one paragraph long, and it seems to contain more information than the draft you submitted to AfC.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 08:51, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Roblox Developer Conference

Can someone fix the Roblox Developer Conference(RDC) section? It's incorrectly spelled multiple times as "Roblox Developers Conference". RealColdshot (talk) 14:24, 30 September 2022 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by RealColdshot (talkcontribs)

No, "Developers" is correct, this can even be seen in the logo. "Content creators" is also correct. Games are content, as are virtual items such as UGC (user-generated content) clothing items.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 17:12, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

I feel like this is an unnecessary addition to the lede because the “Ō” in old Roblox logos seemed to have only been used for logo design purposes, as they still called it “ROBLOX”. B3251 (talk) 11:42, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
There is a blog post from Jan 10, 2017 on the Roblox blog that talks about the "o,"
"By early 2005—around the time Erik, John Shedletsky, Matt Dusek, and I were shipping early versions of Roblox—my father-in-law re-designed our logo to better express our capabilities as a powerful physics engine, while ultimately strengthening our brand recognition at the same time. It was the first iteration to incorporate the bold red outline around the letters, as well as the accent mark over the “o” to indicate that Roblox is pronounced with a long vowel sound."
Given that the diacritic was in the logo for over a decade, as well as it first serving a more practical purpose, I think it is necessary even if it just a footnote. For example, everyone knows of the é diacritic in Pokemon, but nobody uses it in practical circumstances. I think this is a similar example.
If there's a consensus that it wouldn't be necessary for the top portion, maybe it would fit better in the history and development section - given that the logo evolution picture shows the diacritic marks and capitalization. Pacamah (talk) 12:32, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
What differentiates this “Ō” case in Roblox with “é” in Pokémon is that the “é” in Pokémon is officially used as its name, whereas the “Ō” in “ROBLOX” was not used at all other than for its logo.
This gives me probable reason to consider that the “Ō” was only used by Roblox for design purposes in their early logo stages. Both situations are very different because unlike in Pokémon/Pokemon for their letter accent, Roblox doesn’t and never did officially go by “RŌBLOX”. B3251 (talk) 12:52, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
If that's the case, I think that possibly adding just the all caps "ROBLOX" in the first section may be useful. Roblox did go by all caps for a portion of time. (I can't link the actual blog due to the Roblox site blacklist, but the following sources are from archives on the WayBack Machine of the Roblox Blog from):
- Starting from varied capitalization in mid-2008 per a snapshot of the blog on April 5, 2008,
- Consistent capitalization of the word "ROBLOX" per Sep. 9, 2010 (notwithstanding the change in capitalization of the word in Robloxian, Robloxia, and the blog name itself)
- Continuation into 2013 per a May 18, 2013 snapshot (which subsequently updated the capitalization inconsistencies of 2010 with the line "compare and contrast design decisions made in their games: Call of ROBLOXia 5: ROBLOX at War")
- Still seen in a Nov. 5, 2015 snapshot (which also updated "Robux" into "ROBUX")
- Last seen used on a snapshot from Dec. 27, 2016, where it was subsequently Title Case-d and has been since then after a logo change and sitewide redesign.
- Roblox's blog and rule on capitalization is changed in Jan 10, 2017, likely coinciding with the Roblox Blog post titled "Introducing Out Next-Generation Logo." In comparing the two, all instances of the words even in the same articles are changed (Take for instance the post on December 7, 2016 by SilentBuddy, which is titled as "3 Fundamentals of Making a ROBLOX Game" when looked at on Dec 27, 2016, but is changed to "3 Fundamentals of Making a Roblox Game" on Jan. 10, 2017)
Given that there had been a standardization of all official instances of the word Roblox between around 2010 until the beginning of 2017, I don't see why adding "stylized as ROBLOX" or "previously stylized as ROBLOX" to the beginning would detract in any way. Looking at the first instance of "stylized as ROBLOX" on this page, it first appeared on Jan. 29, 2010. A pull of this Wikipedia page in January 4 2017 ⎯ the last edit before the redesign of the Roblox site on Jan. 10, 2017, the page included "stylized as RŌBLOX" text. The edit in which the "stylized as" was removed was done by a now blocked user who was removed for Sockpuppeting, and done on the day of the introduction of a new logo that did not include diacritics, as well as the day in which the overhaul of using Roblox in all caps was implemented (as far as I can tell). Given that this was present (with diacritics or without) for almost seven years, I think it is necessary to keep that in mind when even the current logo retains capitalization.
At the very least, if not adding it to the beginning, I think that adding a sentence in the History and development portion, preferably after "Throughout 2017, Roblox engaged in a number of updates to its server technology, as the technology they were operating on until that point was out of date and led to frequent outages." and amending the sentence "Also in 2017, Roblox closed its official forums" to be read something like "Also in 2017, Roblox closed its official forums and: stylized its logo from RŌBLOX to ROBLOX / updated its logo to be in all capital letters/ removed diacritics from its logo / removed complete capitalization of the word Roblox." Pacamah (talk) 13:55, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Not done: This is unimportant. See also MOS:TMRULES and the third paragraph of MOS:TMSTYLE. When a stylization appears only in a logo rather than within text (in either primary or independent reliable sources), it generally does not need to be mentioned at the top of the article. This eats up a LOT of the initial starting text of the article to denote that at times the logo has been in all caps or used an alternate vowel. It provides no information to the user that is meaningful, and delays the user from reaching meaningful text. And finally, in an appropriate space in the article, we have an image of the various logos from over time, which does aid the reader. -- ferret (talk) 13:29, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Categorizing Roblox as a Game

As the first line of the pages states, it is an "online game platform and game creation system". While it lets you play games, it is not a game itself. Should it still be categorized as a game or should the categories categorizing it as a game be removed/modified? DemonStalker (talk) 01:34, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

Agree with this, it's difficult to reference a parallel because not many exist, but something like Steam is on the far end of the spectrum, Epic games store etc.
Roblox is a game engine, so it's more like calling Unity a game if they were to have a central page for finding Unity-made games. Shredux (talk) 00:19, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Add the Roblox website to infobox

Could Roblox's website be added to the article's infobox? Several other articles on Wikipedia have websites in their infoboxes (including Roblox's corporate page), but the article for the platform itself doesn't. Additionally, this could be useful for verifying the source on search engines, since many search engines have started citing Wikipedia articles under websites where the website is cited in said article, such as Google in its "About this result" feature (which can be accessed by clicking on the three dots next to any website). It could also be used to access the real Roblox website directly from Wikipedia, since some people might not fully trust the results of their search engines. Undo @Oddballslover most recent edit in history and development, its better to know the history of the corporation's logo then removing it for being "too long". Kushyark (talk) 08:59, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

The only reason I can think of it being removed for being 'too long' is because of its length on the mobile version of the site. While I do agree that it is too long being in one image series, I disagree with removing it altogether. I'll see if I can make a compromise such as adding logos in-between paragraphs. Interested in seeing what you think @Oddballslover. B3251 (talk) 23:29, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
I added the logos back. To prevent an overly long multiple image box for mobile users, I used "|perrow=". I didn't add the most recent logo out of convenience for the table, and now it should display properly for both mobile users and desktop users. B3251 (talk) 23:53, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

The chronology of Robloxes history is quite thin and probably should be expanded as there is a quite rich history to the platform.

I'm looking to do exactly this once I get qualified for WP:EXTENDEDCONFIRMED permissions but if anyone already has the perms you are free to start chronologiziesing.

@H44dyss9900 Which information is missing? —Panamitsu (talk) 06:31, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
I can't remember all of it from the top of my head but some examples include: information about the egg hunts, the tix removal (more than just the fact that it was removed), the change from Lua to Luau (maybe not important enough), any information about the catalog, anything about hyperion/byfron.
Heres for example the entry of Roblox history as well as the entry on Roblox on the Roblox wiki fandom. H44dyss9900 (talk) 07:52, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
@H44dyss9900 Writers on fandom are very capable of making things up and we can't source user generated content. NegativeMP1 16:08, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I didn't mean to use the fandom as a source. I pointed them out because said articles contain a good amount of important information which is not conveyed in the respective Wikipedia article and instead it has a bit of information bloat. I'm not saying the info bloat should be removed but what I am saying is that the missing key info should be included if good sources can be found for it.
Usually most fandom articles compared to their Wikipedia counterpart contain information more essential to the subject and have less generic information bloat. H44dyss9900 (talk) 18:15, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
I'm quite fond on Fandom. It often suggests a lot of information which can be added to the Wikipedia articles. The problem of course is that 1) they're sometimes false and 2) they rarely provide sources which can make sourcing for the Wikipedia article very difficult. —Panamitsu (talk) 20:54, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

Issue in "History and development" section regarding name

The name was very briefly DynaBlocks, and the name Roblox was trademarked already in 2004, not 2005 as the "History and development" section suggests. The same section also specifies this in the logo history, so I am not sure how this mistake was made in the text. For further evidence, there is an official trademark document, detailing the trademark being filed in March 29th, 2004.

Can you add this somewhere in the article its about roblox shutting down for 3 days ok here it is

"On October 28, 2021, Roblox unexpectedly went down. This would continue on for about 3 days. On October 31, 2021, Roblox announced that the servers were back up again. Some people speculated that the Chipotle event caused this. This speculation was debunked when Roblox stated that the outage was due to internal server issues while doing maintenance. On a blog post Roblox published in January 20, 2022, of which it goes into more detail about how the 3 day outage occurred, it reads, 'The root cause was due to two issues. Enabling a relatively new streaming feature on Consul under unusually high read and write load led to excessive contention and poor performance. In addition, our particular load conditions triggered a pathological performance issue in BoltDB. The open source BoltDB system is used within Consul to manage write-ahead-logs for leader election and data replication.'"

In March 2024, Roblox introduced two tools to speed up 3D content creation: automatic avatar customisation and a texture generator. Avatar customisation automatically converts 3D body meshes into live animated avatars. Coverage by reliable sources, which is often rare for updates of this nature and a platform like Roblox. I'd say it's fine. Don't say "Spring" though, per MOS:SEASONS. -- ferret (talk) 14:02, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Please add to the History section, 2018-present information:

In March 2024, Roblox introduced two tools to speed up 3D content creation: automatic avatar customisation and a texture generator. Avatar customisation automatically converts 3D body meshes into live animated avatars. Texture generator allows you to create the appearance of objects using text descriptions.[1][2] Buuzbashi (talk) 04:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

The Classic

Any reliable sources out there that have discussed this event? ThingsCanOnlyGetWetter (talk) 19:34, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

Dynamic pricing controversy

Roblox has added dynamic pricing onto the platform on the price floor (the lowest amount of robux you can purchase something) and it has met controversy since some items can get expensive up to 100 Robux for the cheapest items on the Catalog.

It's probably worth mentioning but there is very little sources except one GameRant article and Roblox slighty mentioning on their Developer Wiki.

Those are both not really good sources to be honest and we should probably wait. Flushedwtf (talk) 00:57, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

Bloomberg: Roblox's Pedophile Problem

Probably worth mentioning. There's updated figures for things like user numbers, as well. Eldomtom2 (talk) 19:25, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Done. Now the article mentions the child predator developer's, who was previously mentioned anonymously in the People Make Games' accusations section, name and game at last. ❤︎PrincessPandaWiki (talk | contribs) 19:56, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
