Rick was commissioned in the SAS before he hit puberty?

In the first papragraph it says "In 1979, Astley received a direct entry commission into 22nd SAS Regiment after successfully completing service with the Honourable Balloon Artillery Corps, although was injured during an early training jump and was forced to resign his commission." Assuming his birthday is listed correctly as 1966, that would make him 13 when he got his commission. I can't be the only one who noticed this! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.57.117.48 (talk) 08:07, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

A photo of Rick should be added to this page, perhaps along with an image from the album cover. LLP 15:31, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Voice

Does Rick Astley have extra vocal cords? 168.209.98.35 04:10, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

If you're speaking of the deep and forceful presence of his unusual voice, the word is that he purposefully enjoys an extremely high fiber diet and refrains from having a bowel movement for at least 48 hours before a singing engagement.
I'm going to try this. 76.102.62.11 21:48, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Basic career information

This article lacks information on what record labels distributed Astley's albums; if memory serves me correctly, RCA distributed two of his albums in the United States during a brief period in the 1980's. Be sure to include the labels in sequence on the Infobox musical artist once verified. - B.C.Schmerker 16:02, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Needs more information on the RickRoll'D internet phenomenon

I'll get information on it and when more info's out...

Here, I found this link fairly informative but I'm not good at writing articles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0 SockMonkeh 21:12, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

If I hadn't seen that link so many times already... I woulda clicked it >.< That being said, I don't think the fad started on IGN. I remember reading something about "duckrolling" and 4chan, which would make far more sense. There is no question that gaming forums helped proliferate the meme (and Seth McFarlane didn't help at all), but it would be surprising if something this random got started on one.Jklharris 07:53, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
This, like every other funny meme started at 4chan, more accurate; /v/ "Posting links to videogame-related (or not) Youtube videos is very popular on /v/. On March 29th 2007, there were a large number of threads discussing the recently-released GTA4 trailer. A mischievous Anonymous posted a Youtube link to what he described as a "GTA4 gameplay vid". At the time there was much speculation surrounding the new GTA installment, so the link drew a large amount of curiosity, curiosity that was quickly squashed upon finding that the youtube link actually directed users to the music video of "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley. Many /v/irgins shat bricks when they found a skinny white boy singing like a black man instead of anything even remotely videogame related, and cries of "ONDORE!" soon echoed within the commentary of that particular video. The residents of /v/ found this hilariously absurd, and soon enough, Anonymous stealthily inserted links to this video in many threads on /v/, resulting in much hilarity when other posters get a vintage 80's surprise. Due to the fact that this meme relies on cunning deception much like Duckroll, the practice of tricking people into viewing this song is called the Rickroll, trolls who do it are called Rickrollers, those who fall for it exlaim they've been 'rickrolled,' etc. etc. etc. This meme has also leaked over to /x/, and then to the rest of 4chan."
I was RickRoll'd by an LUElinker. It's the biggest craze there.
See also the article for Never Gonna Give You Up and associated talk page. Snarfies 16:09, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
This did indeed start out, as far as I know, on 4chan. The original craze was "Duckrolling", where users post a link to another post on the forum. Thinking it's a relevant link, many users click on it, only to find it is a picture of a duck with wheels - the infamous "Duckroll". It's then traditional to post a Duckroll elsewhere on 4chan (almost always 4chan/b/). Then someone came up with the idea of Rickrolling - say "There's a youtube video of this" and post the Rick Astley link. A newer version has the song playing over an image of the Duckroll, cementing this as an offshoot of Duckrolling. However, as Wiki doesn't like mention of the 4chan trolls, I'll refrain from adding this into the article and leave it for a more respected user Mysticaloctopus 11:53, 24 May 2007

(UTC)

the wording should be changed from initial "duckroll" image to duckroll image or duckrolling image. it would help if the image of a duckroll was described since there's no stub on it.
As far as I know what you are saying is true. Problem is, there's no way to prove it, and many wikipedia editors are uptight blockheads who would rather have proper procedure than truth, so any statements to that effect would be quickly zotted out of the article. See also Talk:Loituma_Girl#Origin. Snarfies 03:56, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
Wikipedia is about verifiability, not truth. If you have a problem with that, try effecting a change in policy instead of bitching and ignoring policy. DarkSaber2k 13:34, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Indeed. It started on 4chan's /v board. An anonymous user posted a link to Youtube, claiming it to be pornography of some kind. However, the link actually pointed to the video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" and from there the phenomenon spread. Naturally, once it hit the World of Warcraft forums, it exploded in popularity. The Family Guy episode recently, however, is not believed widely to be influenced by this at all, since it mentions nothing of Rickrolling, and is merely a hilarious coincidence. I don't really see why there can't be a small paragraph or mention of Rickrolling on this page. There's no good reason why a trivia/pop culture reference which appears on MANY MANY other pages in very similar styles can't be on Wikipedia.TheMadRussian 04:23, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure it wasn't /v/. And about the Family Guy thing, Family Guy couldn't possibly have referenced it, given the time it makes one episode of a TV show and the fact that it was shown barely a month after the meme began. I think this is a large enough phenomenon to warrant an entry. RickRoll could redirect to this article. Has its own site now: http://www.yougotrickrolled.com/ Jredwards 23:56, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

It wasn't originally a fake link to porn. Here's from Lurkmore:

Rickroll
Posting links to videogame-related (or not) Youtube videos is very popular on /v/. On March 29th 2007, there were s large number of threads discussing about the recently-released GTA4 trailer. The residents of /v/ found this hilariously absurd, and soon enough, Anonymous stealthily inserted links to this video in many threads on /v/, resulting in much hilarity when other posters get a vintage 80's surprise. The most common video used to Rickroll is this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7sK3AqFYAWQ However, be wary, as sly /v/irgins have uploaded the 'Never Gonna Give You Up" music video themselves, and they have also started to link to other Rick Astley songs, such as "Take Me to Your Heart."
Since Rickroll has been used on Seth MacFarlane's cartoon Family Guy[5], it is now an old and tired meme.
It should also be noted that Youtube Rickrolls have been posted so often in gamefaqs, their TOS has been amended in which posting a Youtube video with Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up" is now a violation with the note being, we shit you not, "Posting a RickRoll? That's a paddlin'." -Annon3
Just because the song was used in Family Guy does not mean it was a 'rickroll'. Family Guy has a long history of spoofing songs, such as 'Shepoopie' (however it's spelt) in Patriot Games, or 'Somewhere that's green' as sung by Herbert. Regardless, unless sources are provided to prove it is indeed a 'phenomenon' (never can spell this right) then the information should not be included due to the core polciy of verification and the guidelines for neologisms. DarkSaber2k 13:31, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia contains plenty of other references to memes, none of which can be provided to wikipedia's harsh and demanding standards. But they still get a mention. --86.128.77.245 13:29, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

One source of merely local (i.e. Wigan area) significance is far short of the 'wide usage/mentions in reliable secondary sources' that is required for a neologism/meme to be included in Wikipedia. DarkSaber2k 09:44, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I'd just like to point out there is a way to prove it was 4chan that started it; if one were to go through the early comments you'll see a change around page 750/749 from nostalgic posts reminiscing about rick to posts questioning why the video isn't GTA4. Now, you may argue that it had been used before but no one posted any comments those times. But considering how many comments were posted most of which referencing /v/ and other 4chan memes, you'd have to wonder why no one else said anything about their internet communities if it had indeed started on those. 4chan also has a bit of a semi-followed rules 1&2 which say one mustn't speak of 4chan, which would also lessen(abet minimally) the likelihood of their doing it first if it had indeed been around before the GTA trailer.

Soul standards

Video blog rant -- where is it?

"Although the idea originally developed as a joke, Astley himself was reportedly unimpressed at the use of his hit single as a target for mockery and posted a rant against the craze on his blog, a video of which ironically went on to prove even more popular."

Where is this so called rant of his? If it's even more popular than the actual video, how come I can't find it (yet I can find over thousands of videos of "Never Gonna Give You Up" labeled as "RickRoll")? It would be nice if whoever found this rant could post a link to it, you know sort of state the reference. I'm pretty sure if it was as popular as this article says or if it even exists at all, I would be able to find it on YouTube without even having to ask here. --Machriderx (talk) 23:42, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Paragraph in the middle of Rickroll section

No sources, and while a fraction of it is true it says on another page he won't try and capitalise on the meme. The paragraph is written in a definitely not encyclopedic style, and it contains a great deal of opinion. Astley music used in the American invasion of Panama

I have yet to find a verifiable source for this, but just came across a reference to Astley's music being used by American troops in their invasion of Panama in 1989. Info on the invasion can be seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_invasion_of_Panama, while a reference to the use of rock music is also found in the Noriega article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Noriega.

The reference to Astley came in the 3rd episode of the 17th series of Never Mind the Buzzcocks. I personally find this very humourous, but also consider it a reasonable addition to the article here. Is anyone else familiar with this use? --198.96.36.120 (talk) 22:25, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Question of validity of RickRolling

Does anyone think RickRolling was a phenomenon started by people working for him? On youtube, lot's of controversial or interesting videos would be linked to a RickRoll. It was the best prank on the net, however it seems to good to be true for this to not start from a source, it might just be lucky though. But even if it did start from a source from him, many people thought it was funny and would make RickRoll pranks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.201.193.254 (talk) 18:40, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

No, the source of rickrolling came from 4chan, predictably. They started off with Duckroll, the trail is visible.

"Rick Roll"

The "Rick Roll" section needs some serious help. It's hardly limited to one YouTube video, nor even to YouTube. It's been featured on a number of TV shows (Robot Chicken is but one), and other media (xkcd, etc.). --Kickstart70-T-C 08:11, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I just saw an episode of Psych (First aired on 2/13/2009) that had a reference to Rick Astley. During a flashback to 1988 Spencer creates a Rick Astley pinata for a contest at a summer camp. Later in the episode the pinata ends up being dredged up from the bottom of the lake.

Death reports - hoax

As a courtesy to any editors who come to this page in order to update the death reports please note the following:

  • The reports of Astley's death are all hoaxes. This report claims to be a reprint of an Associated Press article, however the reprint is clearly a fake and was NOT released by AP.
  • It is against Wikipedia policy to publicise hoaxes unless the hoax become newsworthy in their own right - meaning that the hoax itself has significant follow-on events and related press coverage. That is not the case with 99% of hoaxes and is definitely not the case with this one.

If you have any questions about this issue please post them below. However be advised that any additions to this article concerning his death will be reverted immediately. Repeated additions could lead to a vandalism warning. Manning (talk) 06:40, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

But the fact that it is a hoax is notable, at least temporarily. People coming here and seeing this article locked may lead to flashbacks of the Michael Jackson article that was locked immediately after his death. I believe the hoax should be mentioned to reassure people that he is not dead, and that the article is fake. --Fbifriday (talk) 07:55, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Lene Bausager background

Seriously? No one is remotely intrigued by the possibility that Rick met his wife when she was dancing in one of his music videos? Please someone who knows, comment on this. And before whoever deleted this comment deletes it again, think about how awesome Rick and his wife are for doing something like that. It's an important part of his background information which no one has posted.

To begin with a specific question--Lene Bausager bears some resemblance to the bikini-clad woman in the Rick Astley music video, "Whenever You Need Somebody". Is she in fact that very person? 24.90.209.33 (talk) 16:13, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

He wasn't discovered by Waterman, but by Waterman's girlfriend

Transcribed from an interview for which I have provided the link:

Interviewer: "You said you worked with Rick. What you did--you spotted him--"
Pete Waterman: "Yeah--well, I didn't spot him, my girlfriend did."
Interviewer: "Oh really!"
Pete Waterman: "Yeah."

From:
"Rick Astley and Pete Waterman on TV-am - 1987"
Timed link - see it right here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM-PHEpdEak#t=2m00s

So, the part of the sentence beginning the 2nd section should be changed from:
"...when he was noticed by the record producer Pete Waterman, who persuaded him to come to London..."
to:
"...when he was noticed by the girlfriend of record producer Pete Waterman; Waterman persuaded him to come to London..."

That's untrue, he was discovered and pursuaded by Waterman, as you can see on his official biography. --MisterWiki talking! :-D - 14:23, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Pete Waterman usually exaggerates when he is interviewed, especially when it comes to his acts. In this case, he was trying to put across to the audience that Rick was a boy next door type of character, and was found by accident. APHST (talk) 22:32, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Rick Astley's Wikipedia Sales Brochure

this whole Wikipedia entry sounds like like someone's sales - marketing pitch.

"After retiring from the music industry in 1993, Astley made a comeback in 2007 when he became an Internet phenomenon, as his video for "Never Gonna Give You Up" became part of a popular Internet meme known as "Rickrolling".[6] Astley was voted "Best Act Ever" by Internet users at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008.[7]"69.165.138.51 (talk) 00:51, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Astley is English, not American, therefore the "African American" reference is incorrect

The comment that "During much of his career, due to his deep bass-baritone voice, many listeners assumed he was African-American." could be very consfusing. Also "he became the first male solo artist to have his first eight singles all chart in the UK Top 10. In April 2016 Astley released "Keep Signing", which the Mirror would classify as a "comeback single", off his forthcoming album, "50". [25] [40]

In the final paragraph in the section "Return to singing," there are a few things that I think should be changed. The lines are "In April 2016 Astley released "Keep Singing", from his forthcoming album, 50. Interviewed by Amanda Holden on the Lorraine show on 7 April, Astley explained that it was turning 50 which had prompted him to release the single."

The first sentence is missing a comma after 2016.

In the second sentence, Astley is referred to as "it" instead of "he." He's referring to himself turning 50, so I would assume the pronoun should be "he" instead of "it."

And in my personal opinion, the second sentence is phrased awkwardly. I think it would sound better if it said "In an interview by Amanda Holden on..." instead. Snax28 (talk) 00:20, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

The comma after the 2016 is a stylistic option. I don't think it is needed. The "it" being referred to is "the event of turning 50 years old", not Astley himself. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 19:54, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Replace the final paragraph of the Rickrolling subheading with the following paragraph:

There were reports that despite the video garnering millions of hits on YouTube, Astley earned almost no money from the online phenomenon, receiving only $12 USD in royalties from YouTube for his performance share, as of August 2010,[1] but Astley denied those reports in 2016.[2] AlexWall07 (talk) 18:38, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

I might be misunderstanding the editing process here, but why does the article say "Astley has since denied" the $12 royalties claim? That's not correct - as Sir Joseph points out, Astley simply says he's made money from the phenomenon generally, but he hasn't refuted the the claim that he only made $12 in royalties. I've reverted this paragraph back to the original sourced content. As noted above, nowhere on Reddit does Astley say he hasn't only received $12 from YouTube royalties. So he does not refute the original claim. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 22:22, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

Please put under rickrolling internet phenomenon

On 18 June 2020, approximately around 12 AM (GMT+8), Rick Astley posted a photo of himself at his very first concert in 1989 on social media platform Reddit, following which a commenter known as u/theMalleableDuck commented on the post, saying that he had met him backstage when he was 12 years old, and attaching what was supposedly a link to a photo taken with him. The photo, however, was actually a link to a copy of the Rickroll video. Rick Astley supposedly fell prey to it, and clicked on the link rickrolling himself in the process. He reacted with a clapping hands emoji after being rickrolled, while the Reddit user, whose identity is not yet known, became famous in the process, earning himself just under 40,000 Reddit coins and access to Reddit premium until 2029, along with respect from Rick Astley.

Poor infobox image

New proposal

I believe that that the current image is a poor representation of Rick Astley.

1. It’s in B&W, even though the subject is still alive.

2. It has mediocre resolution.

3. It’s partially cropped.

4. We typically like to use photographs of musicians performing in their articles.

So, with these arguments in mind, I think that this new proposal will solve all these underlying issues. Thoughts? Relevation Animations (talk) 17:14, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Oppose the proposed image. First, as you typically have done, you incorrectly assume color is better. Secondly, "partially cropped" is irrelevant; lots of images on Wikipedia are cropped. Thirdly, again your premise that "we typically ... use photographs of musicians performing" is incorrect. And finally, facial shots are preferred for an infobox. Sundayclose (talk) 00:30, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
Comment but the current image is also of him performing? I agree it's not ideal as his face is over-lit. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:25, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

British "or" English?

He's obviously both. But does he self-identify more as English, in the same way as, for example, Tom Jones self-identifies more as Welsh? It seems Astley's fame has primarily arisen from his success in the British music charts and British music scene, not "English" charts and "English" music scene? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:16, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

It could be either, but until there's a source where he self-identifies, or someone has a convincing argument for changing to English, it should stay as is. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 10:26, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Do you have a better source? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:14, 17 September 2021 (UTC) p.s. so Emilia must have been born in 1991 or 1992.

Strange. This article says 2003, as do a few others. https://www.smh.com.au/culture/music/i-fell-in-love-with-her-the-day-i-met-her-the-women-in-rick-astley-s-life-20200819-p55n8s.html. No idea what the actual date is.

Yes, The Sydney Morning Herald is a reliable source. It says: "When I got back from a Japan tour, we officially started dating. That was in the spring of 1989. We married in 2003 and have a daughter, Emilie, who lives in Denmark. She has a master’s degree in fine art and has turned that into designing gardens. She’s a real go-getter and we’re both really proud of what she’s achieved." (I guess their daughter must be older than 18 if she has a master's degree). Apparently he's been no stranger to love. According to his wife, he knew the rules and so did she. She said he never gave her up, let her down, ran around or deserted her. He promised to never make her cry, say goodbye, tell a lie or hurt her. Thank you for the feedback! I will try and find some reliable sources for the song to add here. As for who's playing Robert Palmer, I am not sure but it's still pretty funny. I thought Astley did a good job with the Talking Heads parody as well. --TribeHasSpoken (talk) 11:48, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

What county was he born in?

This page says "in Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire". The Newton-le-Willows page says that city is located in Merseyside, although it's "part of the historic county of Lancashire." The Cheshire page claims he was born in Cheshire. Was Newton-le-Willows ever considered part of Cheshire? Tocharianne (talk) 11:07, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

No. I think the Cheshire page claim is wrong. The Cheshire Life source used there just says "Newton-le-Willows born Rick Astley..."? Martinevans123 (talk) 11:17, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Could someone insert "youtube video" where it says his song reached 1 billion views

The last paragraph of the intro says 'His song "Never Gonna Give You Up" reached 1 billion views'. How do you view a song? I believe it should read 'The YouTube video for his song "Never Gonna Give You Up" reached 1 billion views'. I made an account just to add this but found out it's protected and you need at least 10 edits. SandshrewK (talk) 18:12, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

Rick Astley was born in Warrington and not Newton Le Willows.

His family moved to Newton from Warrington when his was about 6 years old. Onceawirealwaysawire (talk) 19:25, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Will O’ The Wisp

Hello. After looking on Rick Astley’s Spotify, I’ve found 3 songs made by the artist “Will O’ The Wisp” that feature Rick Astley. Could anybody add any information to this, as I’m unable to find any info on who this artist is and how they’re collaborating with Rick. JMC Arts (talk) 22:03, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Glastonbury

On 24 June 2023 Astley performed for the first time at the Glastonbury Festival, on the Pyramid Stage. He took to the stage shortly after midday to the sound of the Star Wars theme, before a disco version Together Forever. He later took to the drum kit for AC/DC's Highway To Hell. Astley had been booked for the festival in 2020, before the festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] 86.187.164.61 (talk) 17:14, 24 June 2023 (UTC) 86.187.164.61 (talk) 17:14, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

He also played the Woodsies Stage on Saturday evening, performing a set of Smiths covers with Stockport indie band Blossoms. 205.239.40.3 (talk) 08:57, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
