Player stats

Removed sections for top goalscorers and most caps as well as the most capped and top scorer in the infobox. These are first of all unreferenced and second, any sources which can remotely verify the figures given, contradict each other.

PK Banerjee was listed with 65 goals in 84 caps. According to this he has 65 in 86 caps. However, from the same site, for player Shabir Ali, here, it says, Having scored 35 goals in international matches, he still remains one of India's all-time top scorers, even ahead of celebrated names like Chuni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Inder Singh or Bhaichung Bhutia. So his supposed 35 goals, which in itself is unconfirmed as being accurate, is more than PK Banerjee's supposed 65 goals, Bhaichung Bhutia's 43 goals and so on. It's also clear that Bhutia only has 30 goals and not the sensationalized 43! All of that is more than good enough to have the content on the page relating to the stats removed. Kit Colors

The reference images I used for the kit colors are as follows. I'm certain there is scope for improvement with matching the graphics more accurately.

Merger proposal

Information from India at the FIFA World Cup should be merged to this article and then that page should be deleted; India never attended a World Cup so "India at the FIFA World Cup" shouldn't exist.Joeykai (talk) 18:55, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

The World Cup is not only the 32-team tournament phase known as the World Cup Finals, but also includes the qualification phase. The Indian team has entered the qualification several times, so I think this page should exist as an independent article. The Discoverer (talk) 02:29, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
@The Discoverer: Of all the articles at Category:Countries at the FIFA World Cup, India at the FIFA World Cup is the only article for a team that has never appeared at a World Cup Finals. By your logic, 132 more " at the FIFA World Cup" articles should be created. In this context, "at the World Cup" does not include the qualification phase.Joeykai (talk) 04:36, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
India were supposed to be in the 1950 FIFA World Cup and were even given a group. If Wales is allowed to have a page with what they have then I can easily replicate that for India. Ya, fine, they did not actually set foot on the grass but there is still a lot that can be put into the article, like India's history with the World Cup and how they did not take it seriously until around the 70s and how the Olympics were viewed as better etc. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 04:46, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
Right, but shouldn't that information just get a section on the national team page? I don't think it warrants a standalone article.Joeykai (talk) 07:26, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
IMO, that would be a lot of information for a section on the main page as you could come up with some things for that World Cup, how India got in, and why they did not. As well as how they considered Olympics as more important and how the "golden era" lasted until they took the World Cup seriously. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 04:38, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
@ArsenalFan700: One could just add a paragraph to the "History" section on the India national football team page. It still doesn't warrant a standalone article. Joeykai (talk) 05:03, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
Hm, okay, I see you now. Let me see what I can do with the page first before conceding it. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 05:20, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Embedded links within article

While doing some minor clean up to the article, I noticed that the report links in the "Results and fixtures" section are embedded into the article. This is something that is not allowed on Wikipedia per WP:CS#Avoid embedded links due to problems with link rot, etc. An embedded link is simply a bare url with a name.

Because links to the third-party websites are sometimes overwritten or simply removed over time, you're often left with something that looks like "Report", which leads to a dead url, an error message, or occasionally some completely unrelated website that now is located at the sourced url. That's why using inline citations instead is considered more appropriate because the information provided for the citation (e.g., date, author name, source name, etc.) can be used by others to find archived versions of the url if someday it becomes inactive. It's only a minor change visually, but it's much better in terms of sourcing. If this is a little confusing then perhaps the following examples will be easier to understand.

  • Instead of using the embedded link markup [http://int.soccerway.com/matches/2015/03/12/asia/wc-qualifying-asia/india/nepal/2012936/?ICID=HP_MS_02_05 Report] which looks like Report, it is better to use an inline citation markup like Report<ref>[http://int.soccerway.com/matches/2015/03/12/asia/wc-qualifying-asia/india/nepal/2012936/?ICID=HP_MS_02_05 "India vs. Nepal 2 - 0"]. ''Soccerway''. 2015-03-22. Retrieved 2015-08-31.</ref> which looks like Report[1] and shows up in the references section as follows:
  1. ^ "India vs. Nepal 2-0". Soccerway. 2015-03-22. Retrieved 2015-08-31.
  • Embedded links can also be converted using citation templates like Report<ref>{{cite web|url=http://int.soccerway.com/matches/2015/03/12/asia/wc-qualifying-asia/india/nepal/2012936/?ICID=HP_MS_02_05|title=India vs. Nepal 2-0|date=2015-03-22|website=Soccerway|accessdate=2015-08-31}}</ref> which looks like Report[1] and shows up in the references section as follows:
  1. ^ "India vs. Nepal 2-0". Soccerway. 2015-03-22. Retrieved 2015-08-31.

Either way of converting the embedded links is fine, but the embedded links need to be converted regardless of the style used. Personally, I think using citation templates makes converting the links easier because it helps keep the formatting of the citations consistent throughout the article, but the end result of both methods is visually the same. I'm happy to convert the embedded links. I just need to know which way of doing so is preferred. - Marchjuly (talk) 01:22, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Archiving

I replaced the link to the old version of the page with a setup which will automatically archive old threads after 90 days to a page [[Talk:India national football team/Archive #]]. Currently this is Talk:India national football team/Archive 1, but the bot should automatically create a new archive page (Talk:India national football team/Archive 2) when Archive 1 gets too full. I think this is a better way to go then simply adding deleting posts and adding a link to an old version of the page like Archive 1 because now the archives are more accessible and can be searched. If, however, others feel this was to bold on my part, just revert back to the older version of the talk page and remove all of the archive markup I added. - Marchjuly (talk) 02:27, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Well written

  • WP:Puffery: "was once considered one of the best teams in Asia," ,"considered to be the "golden era" of Indian football", "one of the best teams in Asia.", "India were still praised by fans and pundits" (the ref used also do not clearly say so)
  • WP:Weasel words: "many historians and pundits believe", "what is still considered the team's greatest result"

RRD (talk) 13:27, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

  • A few sentences in the head coaches section is preferable.

RRD (talk) 13:54, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

  • What is meant by various home stadiums must be explained, if not in the main then in the footnote.

Indian national football team

Hello marchjuly please add the badge of indian football team Jitp33 (talk) 04:25, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

@Jitp33: There has been a general consensus established that the use of non-free national badges is only acceptable per Wikipedia's non-free content use policy for main federation/association articles, but not acceptable for individual national team articles because of item #17 of WP:NFC#UUI. Moreover, the use of the Indian national badge in this article has been previously discussed as I explained on your user talk page and it was removed by an administrator as a result of that discussion. So, if you want to use it in this article, then start by discussing things with the closing administrator as I also explained on your user talk page. โ€” Marchjuly (talk) 06:28, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

@Jitp33: As explained above, the consensus established at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2016 February 6#File:India FA.svg is that the badge image cannot be used in this article because such use doesnโ€™t comply with Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. If you don't understand what this means, please ask. Continuing to re-add the badge despite being advised not to do so is becoming disruptive; so please don't do so again. You are not going to be warned about this anymore and an administrator will be asked to step in the next time you do so. โ€” Marchjuly (talk) 23:06, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

Coloured Heading

Ofcorse some editor want the page to be colourful and to be more presentable, but one must keep in mind, that this page is vsited by many Color blind people. Keep in mind wikipedia is for each and everyone in the community. So no harm in colouring heading but make COBINATIONS of ALphabet and Letter colour insuch a way that it does not make difficult to any section of the community. Recently the Blue Letters in Orange heading edited is not suitable for colour blind people, specially people with TRITANOPIA. Suitable for Color blind people is Light Color Letters in Dark color background, like dark red or dark blue or dark green anything like that but also keep in mind it relate to the jersey. I hope everyone here is responsible editor and do their edit with little more care and in a responsible way. Thank you.โ€”ย Preceding unsigned comment added by Dey subrata (talk โ€ข contribs) 23:09, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

Wrong information and vandalism

Ek1607 May I know what was going in ur mind when you edited last few days. How many times I told you to come to talk page here to discuss first. You continuously changing the Olympics datas without knowing or even counting the numbers, even if i consider only rsssf.com the number does not match with your data, first u provided wrong info about matches played, then now u r changing the goal information. You abusively called me retarted in my talk page, can you you tell me who exactly is retarded. Your abrupt and misinformed and unreasoned edits is making this page weak to make it a Featured article. Your section of Highest goal scorer n capped players are not sourced or no reference link is provided, I have not removed just to respect ur effort in it, rather i m trying to get reference with exact data and found out those goals n caps data have many flaws, and you are saying rsssf.com, i myself give lots of data to them and i have discussed with them and they are reinvestigating their datas and within few weeks u will find new datas there, so please. if not me someone else will remove, but i will surely provide reference in these sections here. What have you learned in these 4 years at wiki, nothing brother. Be a responsible wikipedian, here try to make the page better, for reference go to Peru National team or Belgium National Team page, these are some Featured Article, ofcorse we need not to be similar like them but whatever our version like you provided most goal n capped players list, must be sourced, must have valid reference. I hope u understand n next time cooperate n anything u want to add or remove please discuss and i need to talk with you about another section adding if you are interested ,this will be a new and important section which can make the page better, you can drop message at my talk page if u r interested. Thank you Dey subrata (talk)

So, what's this new section you want to talk and discuss with me before adding that will supposedly make the page better. Ek1607 (talk) 07:31, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
@Ek1607 Thank you for responsing, its about Captains of Indian team and goals keepers, I will be adding the captain list in my sandbox very shortly, and we can refine the list with proper resources and references and can discuss there before adding it to the main page, also can discuss about the coaches about that 60s period. Are we in?? -- Dey subrata (talk)
Yes, we're in. Ek1607 (talk) 09:24, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Kit History

In the kit section previously added imfo from a random online site "..... Green was especially controversial due to it being the colour of India's neighbor's Pakistan" seemed not correct as many other countries use time to time the green and saffron colour like pakistan, bangladesh-green, bhutan and nepal-saffron and other red shades or orange shades, even myanmar and china use red and orange shades time to time. The statement does not give a clear picture, so the statement is modified so to give a clear picture..written as "...as jerseys with saffron and green are often used by neighbouring countries..." no need to take specific country name.

2ndly, while writing the kit history one must add the colors and important changes in the jerseys like and new sash, stripes or design, thats what kit history is about not only who get th contract. One must mature enough to understand, its a important piece of article and while editing must edit with reponsibility, no one owns the article, mind, some editor thinks they own the article..talk page is here, one can discuss matter in details.

AIFF source: https://the-aiff.com/news-center-details.htm?id=9363

There is no need to add a marketing statement into the article. That is literally what the homage to Indian fans thing is and we honestly don't need a description of every new kit made for the India team in that section, just important bits. As for the top part, just because to you it doesn't give a clear picture doesn't mean you can add something without proof to back it. You have to find a source to show that India doesn't use saffron due to other neighboring countries. You can't just add it in. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 20:48, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
when did i add names of other countries, you are just confusing yourself. I said simply write neighbouring countries instead of naming any country, there is no need of it, plus in that article the total thing is a perception, as the strong reason given there is of "political colour" and "religious colour" ..safffron for hindu buddhist, green for muslim, do we need to write all this useless stuff because someone somewhere written something and they taken pakistan colour as 'example" not absolute, so is bangladesh is green,...bhutan use saffron, you can just google it. There is no other other relevant site to back this, its just a perception. This article has to be neutral, so its best to write neighbouring countries.
Secondly, I know we no need to write every kit details, i again and again addressed that, this kit is special, as this is the first time such a design is used, plus it dedicated to the fan and its nick name "blue tigers' whcih the tiger stripes are used. So yes we have to include it, it an important kit in the history fo Indian football. See what "Belgium national football team' article aritesโˆ’โˆ’ In 1905, a Dutch journalist wrote a post-match report that described three Belgian footballers to "work as devils".[90] A year later, inspired by Belgium's red-coloured jerseys and three successive victories, Lรฉopold FC manager Pierre Walckiers nicknamed the Belgian players "Red Devils".[22][24] Because of the white home shirts Belgium wore in the 1970s, they were temporarily known as the White Devils. next time if a similar or previous pattern is used, we need not to write.

Kit

The shade of blue on the shirts on socks of home kit should be of a lighter shade . 223.176.43.46 (talk) 08:04, 5 January 2019 (UTC) Look at the picture in India national football team#Kit and colours โ€”ย Preceding unsigned comment added by 223.176.43.46 (talk) 08:10, 5 January 2019 (UTC) I am talking of the home kit in the infobox . Here are someone, just playing with a Country's history, heritage, glory and honours through removing the realistic informations. Please I'm requesting everybody to admire all the things and edit the section > Honours (Tournament statistics) of the Indian national football team through enlarging the it ( all the international tournaments own by India and best finishes just like silver or Bronze medals ). Correct and true informations are highly acceptable and please don't play with the heritage and glory of a national team. Thanking all at last. Yogabrata (talk) 16:27, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

This is not about reference, honours section does not need citations if linked with the tournament itself, all FA class articles are kept like that. And only major tournaments should be kept. Like regional/continental/world/& FIFA recognised, not friendly tournamnets, and only if won, should be summarised section. For all other details there is seperate page, History of INFT. Intercontinental, tri nation all are come under friendly, and kings cup not won by India. Thank you. Drat8sub (talk) 21:21, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Coaches of India - wrong Information

There is wrong information about the coaches of Indian team for the year 1966. It should not be Santo Mitra but Sachindranath Mitra popularly known as Langcha Mitra. He coached India in Mardeka Cup in Malaysia in 1966. Imdx2001 (talk) 10:10, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Removing historical, true, established and important information from the page

It has been noticed that some editor come here just for the sake of editng as hobby or time pass, nothing to do with the Indian football history or glory, or to enhance the page providing informations and articles or hsitorical facts and data, they just remove established sections, historical facts and vandalise. Please take note, wikipedia is a encyclopedia platform where sharing knowledge is the paramount but true knowledge, its a platform where can easily get any information with ease, thats why we people are here to provide information, to check information so that one can find whole, appropriate, true, justified and factually correct informations. But if someone comes and just to time pass remove some information, its as unethicalas providing wrong information, it will called as vandalism, its not justified and correct according to wikipedia policy. I hope the person understand whom I am referring to, who supposed to be here for last 4 years as metioned to me, but i think he had not learnt anything for all these years. -- Dey subrata (talk) 9:45, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

India was officially participant of the 1950 FIFA World Cup, because they had withdrawn from the tournament after the draws have been settled, thus India became the 'official' participant of the tournament with France unlike Turkey and other countries which have been declared they have withdrawn from the tournament before the drawns have been settled. According to India's Sports Illustrated magazine, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced that the team would attend the World Cup, ignoring the "disagreements over team selection, and insufficient practice time." Results section

Do we really need a results section? Infact all of the results and forthcoming fixtures can be put into results page. Good articles such as Scotland national football team does not have any recent result section. A record of recent results from previous 12 months might also be Wikipedia:Recentism.

Why medals for SAFF in infobox?

SAFF gave a trophy to the winner not a medal like Olympic gives, so why SAFF championship winnings are depicted in medals, it is unnecessary and just decorative, which wp discourage to do. I think we should keep medal's image only for Asian Cup and Olympics, mention SAFF championship by just years. Tesla car owner (talk) 07:15, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Who says tournaments other than Olympics and Asian Games don't give medals. All tournaments irrespective of competitive or friendly tournament give medals. SAFF also give medal, as also FIFA WC and AFC AC. Secondly, the medal portion is in collapsible template, reader whoever wants to know about medal history can open it and check. Thanks for asking. Drat8sub (talk) 19:46, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
But those medals your talking about are isn't just memorabilia, FIFA gives world cup trophy, not medals like Olympic give? If trophies/standings in tournaments can be depicted by medals then we should show Argentina 2022 WC victory by medal in infobox, in their article? Tesla car owner (talk) 06:37, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Have you gone through the mentioned Featured articles below. Above is your POV, against consensus. A featured article is written taking care of various aspects, the prose with well researched and in a comhehensive way, with proper structure following wikipedia guidelines and consensus of the concerned project here football project of wikipedia. So, you need to go through guidelines, policies, about FA, GA, FL and about various projects first so that you understand everything before editing or asking question on every sections which can be avoided if you do so. Thank you. Drat8sub (talk) 07:11, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Team's governing body est SAFF & AFC

Is it relevant to mention that 'Team India's' governing body founded SAFF & AFC in lead. We can mention this in AIFF'S article or in a sub-sction below. Tesla car owner (talk) 07:46, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Of course they are relevant, the team is governed by AIFF and is a founding member of those two confederations who governs the team in continent and world. I don't see any problem in that. When we write wikipedia we try to improve article to FA, FL OR GA status, so before you do this kind of edit you must also check what other FA or GA article says, you can check FA articles like Belgium, Peru NTs, you will find similar info. Thanks for asking. Drat8sub (talk) 19:34, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
But its not an article about a FA instead its about India national football team. It looks obvious to write, AIFF founded SAFF,AFC but do we need to write it on 'IND National team's' article. ๏ฟผ Tesla car owner (talk) 06:31, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
FA is Featured article of wikipedia, the best possible status of a wikipedia article. Drat8sub (talk) 06:43, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
I wasn't talking FA= Featured Articles, I was talking about FA = Football Association. If you think yeh info belongs here, then it's ok. Tesla car owner (talk) 07:30, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Indian team have 3rd color?

I saw during 2023 SAFF championship, the team wore red color match uniform this wp should add 3rd color uniform in the infobox. Tesla car owner (talk) 06:42, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

Hey buddy, have you gone through guidelines and policies of wikipedia? Because what you doing is simply asking about every section and every topic, as "what why how", before starting wikipedia you need to read all those to understand how a page is written, how it is structured and where and why it is written. About your concern, there is no third colour of India, it was the away colour, the infobox jersey pattern is not updated yet since it take time for an editor to make the design, and will be updated in near future. Drat8sub (talk) 07:03, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
During SAFF 2023 team India wore red, Blue color jersey in separate games, I also previously saw them in White. There is no much info about Ind team jersey in web but Blue is their 1st colour 100%, I think red is their third colour or they abonded white color jersey. Tesla car owner (talk) 07:20, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi, take a look, on official AIFF website, they shown 3 jerseys for Team India -[1]. It proves that they have 3 match uniforms. Tesla car owner (talk) 07:27, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Alright, I'll not add 3rd colour jersey, but if you feel, team India have red color jersey as 3rd color instead of white, I suggest you to add it. Tesla car owner (talk) 07:33, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
I have already explained you above, you no need to do anything. Better you go through guidelines, that what you must do. Drat8sub (talk) 07:35, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
The infobox should be tweaked because, Indian team now use red color jersey as away jersey (source -[2] [3], they don't uses white jersey. Tesla car owner (talk) 16:13, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
