The 2024 Oakland mayoral recall election was a successful special recall election to remove Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao from office. It was held on November 5, 2024.
Background
[edit]Sheng Thao had originally been elected to mayor in 2022, winning by 0.6% in the final round of voting. Due to rising crime, a growing tension with the police department, and an FBI investigation, recall efforts spurred. Recall supporters were able to get enough signatures and put the move on the ballot. [1]
Election
[edit]The election will be hold on November 5th, concurrently with the presidential and other federal and state elections. Uniquely, the election would also coincide with a county-wide recall of District Attorney Pamela Price. Libby Schaaf, Thao's direct predecessor, endorsed the recall.[2]
Thao would go on to lose by a 60% to 40% margin.[3]
