2012 population estimates

Are the 2012 Census population estimates online? An anon has edited the Mosheim, Tennessee, article stating its population is now over 4,400, and cited fact-finder. I find it hard to believe Mosheim's population doubled over a 2-year period. Bms4880 (talk) 16:49, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

The Census does sometimes issue population estimates, but Wikipedia has traditionally stuck with the official numbers from the last Census. There's no indication where that Mosheim 2012 number came from (probably not the Census). I've reverted the edits to the Mosheim article. --Orlady (talk) 18:43, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
In fact, the Census has an estimate for Mosheim, but it's for 2011, and it shows only 18 people more than in 2010.[1] --Orlady (talk) 18:46, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm posting this here in hopes this project has enough members to keep a long-term eye on Davy Crockett. I'm not sure at this point it would qualify for semi-protection, but I sure wish it did. I've recently done a number of edits on the article, and it could stand to be improved even more. But what struck me about the article is how much total junk was in the article, sitting there for years unchallenged, a large chunk of which has been dropped in years ago by an IP editor. The article has been in bad shape for a long time. Some of it has appeared to me to be deliberate hanky-panky. And some of it looks to be good faith edits by persons with limited knowledge of the subject matter. The legend aside, this man was a United States Congressman. It needs watchful eyes to make sure it doesn't disintegrate again. And in an ideal world, such a public figure would merit some dignity in a Wikipedia article. I think it might take some re-working to raise it up to the level of FA or GA, but I'm always hopeful. — Maile (talk) 16:18, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

I semi-protected the article -- and added it to my watchlist. Considering that it gets several thousand page views daily -- and seems (the 130 page-watchers notwithstanding) to get more consistent attention from vandals and people wanting to add original theories and legends than it does from "regulars" familiar with Wikipedia policy, I think we can justify a lower-than-normal threshold for semi-protection. Thanks for your efforts at cleanup, Maile. --Orlady (talk) 20:57, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I moved most of the block of text about the Disney series to the separate article that already existed for it. Hopefully, somebody more qualified and neutral than I am can tackle the section about his death controversy. It seems to have a POV already. I personally believe the only one who knows for sure how Crockett died is Davy himself. But I'm not neutral enough to write about a book that (ironically) couldn't pass Wikipedia standards - as far as I know, no one has ever established the book was credible. But it left enough doubt that it needs to be covered in that article. Just not by me. — Maile (talk) 23:00, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Does Walnut Grove, Sumner County, Tennessee, belong on this list? It doesn't appear to be incorporated. Bms4880 (talk) 22:26, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Hmm. It was incorporated in 1999, but apparently challenged in court and unincorporated in 2001 (I'm seeing a reference to Sumner County Chancery Court case 98C322, but can't locate an online record for it). I'm not sure why anything unincorporated is present in that list, and would suggest they all be removed. Huntster (t @ c) 07:24, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Quick answer: Several no-longer-unincorporated places are on the list because they were incorporated as of the 2000 census, and therefore appear[ed] on all manner of official lists of Tennessee cities and towns. This is (or should be) covered in a footnote. --Orlady (talk) 13:08, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

2012 section in Haslam's article

I've added a 2012 section to the Bill Haslam article. Let me know if it looks biased one way or the other. Bms4880 (talk) 20:22, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I didn't see bias, but I felt a need to add some detail regarding his first (and so far, only) veto last year.
As long as you're adding to his article, do you think that the Presidential speculation in this current story in the Tennessean deserves attention yet? Even if we don't want to mention the notion that some people have suggested he could be a presidential candidate, the statements from national pundits about how he is perceived could be good material for the article.
And on yet another Haslam subject, note that his father made number 831 on the Forbes billionaires list: http://www.tennessean.com/viewart/20130305/BUSINESS01/303050040/Frist-Ingram-Haslam-families-Tennessee-make-Forbes-list-world-s-richest --Orlady (talk) 21:07, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
The presidential speculation is what finally jolted me into updating the article. He was also featured in a Politico article a couple of weeks ago: [2]. I'll add more material shortly. And it was actually his brother, Jimmy Haslam, that made the Forbes list. I updated the infobox on that article. Bms4880 (talk) 21:41, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
Wow. Indeed it is Jimmy and not Jim! Interesting... --Orlady (talk) 22:20, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
I see no need to add the Presidential speculation, given that in a video interview with WSMV, he expressed zero interest in running. I don't really feel that media speculation is notable unless it is extremely widespread over time and volume. Perhaps if something more becomes of it... Huntster (t @ c) 00:22, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Scarritt College and Scarritt College for Christian Workers appear to be the same institutions. There is also now Scarritt-Bennett, a conference center in Nashville. I suggest we merge both pages and add a new section about Scarritt-Bennett. Thoughts?Zigzig20s (talk) 03:04, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

No argument here. Bms4880 (talk) 13:51, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Knox County

I've begun editing the government section of the Knox County article. Have added subsections for Legislative and Executive branch, as well as sheriff. I think the judicial branch is going to be bit difficult to write with any detail, so it may be short -- basically an outline of each court. I'm also working on getting up a list of other elected offices. ETNVol2001 (talk) 02:40, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

WP Tennessee in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Tennessee for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. Huntster needs to answer the Memphis barbecue question. Bms4880 (talk) 14:57, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
I would, if I had any experience in that area. But I'm in Murfreesboro, and not a BBQ connoisseur! I've failed our state... Huntster (t @ c) 02:40, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
I believe there are a few more editors here (in addition to Theo) who live in West Tennessee, including User:DoxTxob, so it's possible that someone can give advice on BBQ. However, it appears that we might just have to disappoint those of our fellow Wikipedians who were hoping that we'd fit into a set of standard Tennessee stereotypes! --Orlady (talk) 02:34, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
I feel like just being a vegetarian is stereotype-defying enough...ah well, such is life. I wrote what I could, but it really isn't much. Theopolisme (talk) 02:59, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
You wrote a fabulous answer, Theopolisme. Your answer is positively dripping with Memphis pride, never mind that you abstain from meat drippings! I especially like your comment about the potato chips. --Orlady (talk) 03:12, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Y-12

Do the OREPA protests really deserve half the lede of this article? Bms4880 (talk) 14:50, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

You were referring to the effect of a very recent edit to Y-12 National Security Complex. I reverted that edit, as I see it as unbalanced. Neither the 1999 accident nor the OREPA protests are nearly as significant in the facility's history as some other events, not all of which are covered in the article.
Overall, the article gives vestigial coverage to the subject of the facility. It could be expanded significantly to cover the plant's missions over the last 6 decades (to the extent that those missions aren't classified), the releases of mercury to East Fork Poplar Creek, and other topics. Furthermore, the information about the contractors needs to be updated. I'll take a stab at editing the lead, at least. --Orlady (talk) 19:06, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Need to edit maps of Middle and East Tennessee

Yoo-hoo, are there any graphics gurus watching this page? The files File:East Tennessee-counties.png and File:Middle Tennessee.png (both currently hosted at Wikimedia Commons) need to be edited to show that Sequatchie County is officially part of Middle Tennessee, not East Tennessee. File:Appalachian-tennessee-arc-2003-status.jpg has a white line indicating the correct position of the boundary. The map on the last page of this section of the Tennessee Blue Book is an authoritative source. (I'd do it, but I don't think I know how!) --Orlady (talk) 23:06, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Can't figure out how to get Paint Shop Pro to do alpha blend, so I can flood fill individual counties with appropriate blending into the black lines. If anyone knows how, please tell me. I'm working on an alternate but lower quality solution now. Huntster (t @ c) 02:17, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Well, things didn't go quite as planned during the switch to Commons, etc, but everything should be working now. Thanks for the help Orlady. Images are at File:Map of East Tennessee counties.png, File:Map of Middle Tennessee counties.png and File:Map of West Tennessee counties.png. Let me know if you see any errors. Huntster (t @ c) 04:31, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the accurate -- and much spiffier-looking -- images, Huntster. Things would have gone more smoothly if all of the image-sizing parameters here worked the way the documentation says they are supposed to, but that's what work-arounds are for! --Orlady (talk) 14:25, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Aye, no kidding. My biggest hold-up was having to fix instances in non-English Wikipedias, which apparently had just copied the English article and translated, but for some reason every one of them used "frame" instead of "thumb", which doesn't work correctly in any way shape or form. Gah... In any case, if you find any more such things that need modifying, drop a note on my talk and I'll do what I can. Huntster (t @ c) 00:30, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

I had some time on my hands...

I like them, but where are they to be used? Bms4880 (talk) 18:11, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
I have absolutely no idea whatsoever, which is why I just posted them here :p Theopolisme (talk) 20:31, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Rocky River

Does the bend at 35.76873 -85.60457 fit the definition of a meander cutoff? It's blue on topographical and road maps, but appears to be dry on satellite images. It doesn't appear to affect the course of the river. Bms4880 (talk) 23:40, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

It does not appear to be a cutoff. Google Maps has a clear satellite view and it is clear that there is no cutoff. United States Man (talk) 23:46, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Bill Haslam

An anon added the statement, "Haslam was rated as "The Worst Governors in America" by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW)" to the lede of this article, and is adding it to the lede of any governor on the list. I removed it, as the site appears to be biased (all but two of the 18 listed are Republicans). If it's a legitimate site, we can re-add the statement, though it doesn't belong in the lede. Bms4880 (talk) 17:19, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

I heard about it this morning on News Channel 5. It appears to be legitimate. I actually thought it was funny. Way to go Tennessee! United States Man (talk) 17:44, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
It doesn't rate him as the worst, or in the top 12 worst, just "worth watching." Bms4880 (talk) 18:03, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, not seeing how it would warrant an inclusion on Haslam or any other's articles. Huntster (t @ c) 23:30, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Does this complex meet notability? Bms4880 (talk) 20:09, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

I don't think so. It's a run-of-the-mill Interstate-exit commercial development, circa early 2010s. --Orlady (talk) 04:21, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

House votes on 19th Amendment

Anyone know where to find the votes of individual House members on the 19th Amendment (January 10, 1918)? I'm trying to figure out whether Richard W. Austin voted yea or nay. It appears from his speech in the debates he voted for it, but I wanted to make sure. Bms4880 (talk) 01:18, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Davy Crockett, same song, second verse (vandalism)

On Feb 3, 2013 Orlady semi-protected Davy Crockett with an expiration date of August 3, 2013. The protection template was removed August 4. Vandalism started up again August 14, 2013 and was instantly reverted by Cluebot NG. Hopefully, editors here can still keep an eye on Davy Crockett in case the vandalism escalates again. Thanks. — Maile (talk) 16:07, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

I'm actually impressed the article went a full 10 days without getting vandalized. Bms4880 (talk) 17:11, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
Yay! and Hooray! The semi-protection has been reinstated indefinitely. — Maile (talk) 12:30, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Lazy redirects

Someone created a redirect page pointing Alexander Outlaw to Alexander O. Anderson. They are, of course, two completely different people. I've removed the redirect, but not sure what to do about the blank page. Bms4880 (talk) 19:33, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Also, someone created a redirect for the Knoxville Journal, pointing it to a section of Brownlow's Whig. That section mentions the roots of the Journal, but is nevertheless insufficient for a redirect.

These redirect pages should be deleted. Bms4880 (talk) 19:48, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

I requested speedy deletion. United States Man (talk) 22:05, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Citing Facebook

An anon added a Facebook link to Big Ears Festival, citing an "official page" exception to the no-Facebook rule. Is this ok? I wasn't aware there was an exception (the festival, btw, has an actual website aside from its Facebook page). Bms4880 (talk) 01:49, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

I've never known that to apply to Facebook. This is especially the case as an official site was already linked. External links sections should really have a minimum of links. I've removed the Facebook link as well as the promotor's website. Huntster (t @ c) 05:56, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Second-oldest city in Tennessee

Dandridge has long proclaimed itself the second-oldest city in Tennessee, but I'm not sure how they're determined this. Greeneville also calls itself the second-oldest city/town in the state. Both appear to have been settled in 1783. Greeneville was incorporated in 1795, and Dandridge in 1799. I think Rogersville has made similar claims. Both the Dandridge and Rogersville articles describe their respective towns as the state's second-oldest.

Is there any way to sort this out, or should we start dumping the "second-oldest" claims? Bms4880 (talk) 17:53, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Interesting issue! IMO, the encyclopedia articles for all of these places (plus any others that make the same claim) should document their early history in detail and with appropriate sources (not all of them do this now -- saying what happened when would be much better than blandly reporting "second oldest" status) and indicate that each of these towns is one of several that are sometimes identified as "second oldest" in the state. Presumably, the determination of "oldest" depends in part on what event is treated as their "establishment". (Depending on what's measured, I bet there are some other places that could claim to be "oldest" or "second oldest".) Incorporation isn't a particularly good indicator, since some towns were pretty thoroughly established before they officially incorporated.
Here's some evidence I rounded up in a quick search:
  • Greeneville claims to have been founded in 1783.
  • According to the Tennessee Encyclopedia, the first permanent settlement in Dandridge was in 1783.
  • The Rogersville, Tennessee article, which is mostly based on a print source, indicates that Davy Crockett's family arrived in 1775, but sold out to Thomas Amis after the 1777 massacre; that Amis built a fort just outside Rogersville in 1780; and that Rogersville was designated the county seat of Spencer County, North Carolina, in 1785. This town history page indicates that Davy Crockett's grandparents had settled near Rogersville before the 1777 massacre and that the town was settled by Joseph Rogers in the "early 1780s". Rogersville Heritage Association indicates that Joseph Rogers started working on Amis' plantation near Rogersville around 1781 and that in 1786 he eloped with Amis' daughter and bought land of his own that later became Rogersville.
BTW, where is the article about Spencer County, North Carolina, a defunct county that was a precursor to the state of Franklin? --Orlady (talk) 19:19, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
FWIW, Jonesborough (the oldest town) was chartered by North Carolina in 1779.[3] --Orlady (talk) 19:23, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Meltron?

Driving along US-411 from Maryville to Vonore, there is a sign that says "Meltron" with "Unincorporated" beneath it, like you see when entering unincorporated communities, just as you cross the Loudon County line. A sign saying the same thing stands on the opposite side of the road, about a mile west of the 411/95 intersection. I can't find anything about Meltron, however, and the people who live along this stretch of road have Greenback addresses (two of the businesses have "Greenback" in their names). No one I asked had ever heard of Meltron, other than the signs.

Could there be another reason for the Meltron signs, other than identifying an unincorporated community? Bms4880 (talk) 01:31, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

National Register of Historic Places photos

WP:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is an active project that has generated a large fraction of the articles about Tennessee and other U.S. states (some are excellent articles, others are execrable, and many are in between). One of that project's goals is getting an image of every property listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tennessee is lagging behind a number of other states -- less than half of our National Register properties are illustrated. Just a handful of folks contributed a large fraction of the Tennessee National Register photos that are in Wikipedia now (User:Bms4880, User:Andrew Jameson, User:EVula, User:NatureBoyMD, User:Kaldari, User:DoxTxob, User:Ichabod, User:Saxonjf, and User:Sesamehoneytart are among them).

Tennessee's larger cities generally have better coverage than most of the state's rural places, but I'm surprised to discover that some of Tennessee's metropolitan counties are still under-photographed. If you are in or near Williamson, Rutherford, Sumner, Washington, Hawkins, or Tipton counties and you can take digital photos (nowadays, who can't?), you have a great opportunity to contribute to Wikipedia by loading up the county National Register list and heading out with your camera. I didn't list nearly all of the counties needing pictures. If you are in some other part of the state, there are doubtless some voids for you to fill -- just look up your favorite counties at National Register of Historic Places listings in Tennessee to get a list of properties needing photographs. --Orlady (talk) 04:58, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

I see the photo slot for Freels Cabin is still embarrassingly blank. Bms4880 (talk) 07:50, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
It's a beautiful building. It's also difficult to get access -- it's about 1 mile past a locked U.S. government gate. I think have a couple of photos that I took at the cabin, but they aren't suitable for the encyclopedia. --Orlady (talk) 15:44, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
I've got a list of places I've been meaning to go around to and take pictures of (some on the list, some not), but was way too busy when it was nice out. Right now it's cold as hell and the trees are bare, so I'm planning to shoot in the spring. (though I'm mainly planning to just stick to Davidson locations; I'd be fine with driving out to Rutherford or Williamson, but much further than that just isn't worth it to me in time and gas) EVula // talk // // 21:55, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
If you focus on the ones in Murfreesboro and Franklin, that would fill a substantial portion of these two counties. Bms4880 (talk) 22:36, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
I'm in Rutherford, but my camera was accidentally destroyed recently. Hopefully I'll be replacing it within the month and can try to cover some of these locations. Huntster (t @ c) 17:05, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

County border discrepancy

There seems to be a problem with the borders between Putnam and Fentress and Overton and Cumberland. According to what is on the Wiki articles, they all border each other, but this is physically impossible. According to Mapquest and Bing, as well as a DeLorme road atlas that I have, Overton and Cumberland do NOT border each other. In fact, the Fentress/Putnam border looks to be over one mile long and has State Highway 62 running across it. So, this would also impact Cumberland County's status as a U.S. county bordering eight or more states, knocking down from nine to eight. United States Man (talk) 21:51, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

That is strange. My guess is that whoever filled out the "adjacent counties" mistakenly believed there was a four-way intersection between Putnam, Overton, Fentress and Cumberland (it sort of looks like this on the little map of the state that appears in county infoboxes). But yes, the Putnam-Overton-Fentress intersection is about a mile west of the Putnam-Fentress-Cumberland intersection, at least according to topo maps. Bms4880 (talk) 23:56, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

2010 demographics

We should get started updating demographics information to 2010 for the state's counties and municipalities. The information displayed on Quickfacts appears slightly different for 2000 and 2010, so it may not be as easy as copying the new numbers. Bms4880 (talk) 18:50, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

I recently added the 2010 and 2012 population to all incorporated towns in TN, but not cities or counties. --ACase0000 (talk) 15:42, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:29, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Alphabetizing

Does MOS mention anything about alphabetizing entities named after individuals, namely by first name or last name? Our NRHP lists use the surname, though several lists of national parks are using the first name. Bms4880 (talk) 17:44, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

The National Register lists alphabetize those types of entities by surname, but that's an anomaly. As you note, most other Wikipedia lists of entities named for people are alphabetized by the first name. (This is one of several ways in which the NRHP WikiProject deviates from general Wikipedia guidance.) --Orlady (talk) 20:47, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks. Bms4880 (talk) 21:12, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Expanding Anthony Bledsoe (1739-1788)

I created Anthony Bledsoe's page earlier today. Bledsoe County is named in his honor. Feel free to expand his page with more referenced info! Also, is it possible to find a painting?Zigzig20s (talk) 14:31, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Where are you getting 1739 for year of birth? Both the Tennessee Encyclopedia article and that Cisco book give the year as 1733. Also, one of your references has "Isaac Bledsoe" as the title, but links to the Anthony Bledsoe article. Bms4880 (talk) 17:31, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
It looks like the 1739 date comes from Find-A-Grave.com, which is not a reliable source. The Tennessee Encyclopedia article (by Walter Durham, who was Tennessee state historian) is loads better as a source. --Orlady (talk) 18:45, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
That's fine. I wasn't sure as I found two birthdates (and two birthplaces). Thank you for your interest. His brother Isaac should also have his own page; no time to create it right now though. I wonder who is father Abraham was?Zigzig20s (talk) 04:08, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Black Patch Tobacco Wars and The Night Riders

Currently there are two separate articles, both created a long time ago, about the Black Patch Tobacco Wars and The Night Riders. Both articles are about essentially the same topic. I think it would make sense to merge them into a single article. However, I don't know much of anything about the topic, and I think it's possible that there is a reason to document the Night Riders separately from the Wars. I seek your advice: do the two articles both need to exist, or does it make sense to merge them? Posting the same item at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Kentucky. --Orlady (talk) 02:48, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

I would probably merge them into Black Patch Tobacco Wars, though I'm not familiar with the topic. "Night Riders" was an oft-used term for vigilante groups (as well as quasi-Klan groups) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In West Tennessee, the term "Night Riders" would probably bring to mind the Reelfoot Lake vigilantes of 1908 ([5], [6], and [7]). I'm sure there were multiple other uses for the term throughout the South. Bms4880 (talk) 03:31, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
I also figure that Black Patch Tobacco Wars is the appropriate merger destination. --Orlady (talk) 03:56, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

An anon claiming to work at the Tipton-Haynes site has been making edits to articles changing the spelling of the above to "Nathaniel Greene Taylor." While the edits have been reverted (they butchered the piping), I did find this Tennessee Encyclopedia article and this book which use the "Greene" spelling. Bms4880 (talk) 17:40, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

I don't know much about Taylor, but I do know that I've been confused by the multiple spellings of his name. Variant spellings of names are common in old records (and variations in the inclusion or omission of silent "E"s are particularly common), and it's likely that some writers have added the "E" to conform with the spelling of Nathanael Greene, who was popular as a namesake. The "Green" spelling seems to predominate in the sources (particularly in the more authoritative sources), so I think that's where the article title should stay. However, because of the variant spelling, two months ago I created Nathaniel Greene Taylor as a redirect. --Orlady (talk) 19:09, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Free access to Oxford University Press online references during Library Week

Oxford University Press is giving U.S. users free online access to a number of useful references this week only -- see http://global.oup.com/academic/librarians/national-library-week/ . I am finding American National Biography to be useful for filling in blanks in some biographical articles. The African-American history resources and Grove Music also look particularly likely to be useful in editing Tennessee articles. --Orlady (talk) 14:20, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I created this stub today. Feel free to expand it--I am sure there must be a lot more about civil rights and the admission of black students. Also, is anyone able to take a picture of the Benton Chapel on the Vanderbilt University campus and add it to wikimedia commons so that it can be inserted on his page? Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 11:03, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I am working on these two articles, and I have found a picture for each one and the copyright has probably expired, but I don't know how to add them to their pages. Can you please do it for me? (I'd rather not add them to my wikimedia commons account.) Here's Philip's (also this, this, this) and his son Adrian's (also this one). Also, it would be great if you could add this picture to John Berrien Lindsley's page. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 14:28, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

The images should be uploaded to Commons, whith appropriate license information. Why don't you want to upload them yourself? --Orlady (talk) 15:12, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
I just prefer uploading only pictures I've taken myself. I won't change my mind about this. Would you please do it? Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:49, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
Well, I'm not a purist regarding my commons account, but I'm also not particularly interested in either of these people... --Orlady (talk) 18:42, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
If you want Commons to have a "clean" set of your photos (unsullied by unrelated work), you could use your Commons user page to display a gallery of the photos you have contributed. --Orlady (talk) 19:46, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
How would I do that?Zigzig20s (talk) 04:10, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
Go to your Commons user page at [8] and edit it. User:Bms4880 has a nice page there at [9], including galleries of his photos, that should give you hints on how to code your own user page. --Orlady (talk) 04:56, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
It looks complicated and, worse still, time-consuming. I think your nomination for DYK would stand a better chance with a picture. Btw, I wasn't done with the article, that's why I had a tag on it. I added some new info today (most importantly, a reference for who actually coined the phrase "Athens of the South", Leroy J. Halsey). I will try to expand the article a bit more still, with more referenced info. Thank you for your interest.Zigzig20s (talk) 09:48, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Isn't this Alexander Outlaw? If the article is already in Wikipedia, then it should be taken out of the article requests.

No, it isn't the same person. That article refers to Alexander Outlaw Anderson, not Alexander Outlaw (1738–1826). Someone earlier made the same mistake, and redirected "Alexander Outlaw", creating a mess. They're two different people, with two different surnames. Bms4880 (talk) 02:36, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
I went ahead and created a stub for Alexander Outlaw. I'll try to expand it at some point. Bms4880 (talk) 15:05, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Is there a reason why the lieutenant governors list begins at 1870? I'm assuming it has something to do with the 1870 constitution, but the designation wasn't created until 1951 (before that, they were simply speakers of the senate, though their responsibilities were the same). I can't find a reliable source stating that Ramsey is the 49th, or Wilder was the 48th. That would be their order if counting from Dorsey B. Thomas.

I've added a list of pre-1870 speakers, but I'm wondering if we should just merge it all into one giant list. Bms4880 (talk) 19:05, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Chattanooga on the To-Do list

You know, Chattanooga has been on the To-Do list to "verify" as needing sources since 2006. Right now, it has 256 inline sources, and I don't see tags anywhere. Maybe it got sourced better since 2006? — Maile (talk) 18:33, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed it. It looks pretty-well sourced to me. Bms4880 (talk) 19:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

We may need to lock/protect this article. It looks like some anons have been going at it, and there may be COI involved. Bms4880 (talk) 17:13, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

There isn't that much activity there, but if there is another flare-up, I would at least put in a request for semi-protection. I am going to issue a few warnings, but that may not help much. United States Man (talk) 17:28, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
@Bms4880: I have taken the liberty of cleaning it up, back to before edits by User:Hairyboat. There were no IPs in the wrong from what I saw, but a COI by Hairyboat. None of the stuff added was backed up by sources and has been taken out. United States Man (talk) 17:42, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

List of municipalities in Tennessee

Hello, editors of WikiProject Tennessee:

List of municipalities in Tennessee is outdated, and not, in its current state, one of Wikipedia's best. Thus, I'm nominating it for featured list removal. The relevant discussion is at Wikipedia:Featured list removal candidates/List of municipalities in Tennessee/archive1. Thanks. Seattle (talk) 15:40, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

I've updated the list with 2010 census data. There are several other issues listed on the nomination page. Bms4880 (talk) 23:31, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

If there are no objections, I'm going to merge this into one large list, and use color coding to denote the title. Anons are getting confused by the current layout. Bms4880 (talk) 17:50, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Does anyone have local knowledge of McKenzie in Carroll County?

Does anyone have local knowledge of McKenzie? There's a discrepancy between two sources regarding the street address of the former building (National Register listed) of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church-McKenzie. I think the discrepancy possibly can be sorted out by somebody who knows the local situation. (My hypothesis is that the street numbering was revised during the last 20 years -- that kind of thing happens sometimes.) See Talk:First Cumberland Presbyterian Church-McKenzie for details. --Orlady (talk) 13:42, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Davy Crockett comments needed on talk page

Please, someone with knowledge of early Tennessee history. Talk:Davy Crockett, section Semi-protected edit request on 15 November 2014. Refers to Diff. I personally don't care one way or another, except to get it correct. However, the change I reverted had no sourcing. Plus, the link to Greene County, NC, I believe is too far north to be where Crockett was born. Going by this map. But I've never lived in Tennessee. I think someone with knowledge of the area history, and the Wikipedia policy that covers this needs to weigh in. Hopefully, get it correct, either direction. Thanks.— Maile (talk) 22:37, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:57, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

On August 4, a lot of content was removed from the subject article because it was not properly cited. However, a lot of it read as reasonable content. If any regular editors working on this article think any of that removed content is useful, please take some time to find references and restore as much as you think is important to include in this article. Y-12 and Calutrons

An editor attempted to add a hatnote to the History section of the Y-12 National Security Complex article pointing to the Calutron article as this section's "main article." I changed the hatnote to a seealso. Does anyone here know if either hatnote is accurate for this section? BrineStans (talk) 03:18, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

I removed it completely. It's linked in the section just fine in the sentence "The Y-12 facility began operating in November 1943, separating uranium-235 from natural uranium, which is 99.3% uranium-238, by using calutrons to perform electromagnetic isotope separation." It would be different if either were directly specific to the other. — Wyliepedia 07:48, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

US 50,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:36, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

Greetings WikiProject Tennessee/Archive 5 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at http://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/cgi-bin/topic_points.py?banner=WikiProject_Tennessee

Please take a few minutes to help make these more useful to our readers.— Rod talk 19:00, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

RfC on election/referendum naming format

An RfC on moving the year from the end to the start of article titles (e.g. South African general election, 2019 to 2019 South African general election) has been reopened for further comment, including on whether a bot could be used move the articles if it closed in favour of the change: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (government and legislation)#Proposed change to election/referendum naming format. WP 1.0 Bot Beta

Hello! Your WikiProject has been selected to participate in the WP 1.0 Bot rewrite beta. This means that, starting in the next few days or weeks, your assessment tables will be updated using code in the new bot, codenamed Lucky. You can read more about this change on the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team page. Thanks! audiodude (talk) 06:49, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Land Between the Lakes structures located in Kentucky

I had an WP:AFC draft for Lake Barkley Bridge accepted and the reviewer added it to this WikiProject. However, Lake Barkley Bridge is located entirely within Kentucky. Do you all want to err on the side of including Land Between the Lakes related articles in your project as well as Kentucky's no matter where they are, or would you prefer to stick to geographical boundaries? A discussion on sources

There is a deletion discussion here about the show Can You Duet. While the show lasted for two seasons, it seems to have garnered no coverage as I've dissected in the AFD. I would appreciate more eyes on the AFD to judge the validity of the sources already there and prove or disprove the existence of further sources. AFD source hunt for Kerry Marx

I would appreciate further input at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kerry Marx, as I feel that the sources provided by other editors do not pass muster as significant third-party coverage and would appreciate a greater consensus. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

At Talk:The Commercial Appeal § Requested move 2 February 2023 there is a proposal to remove the word "The" from the article's title. Entrepreneurs of Knoxville

Could someone from this WikiProject take a look at Entrepreneurs of Knoxville and assess it per WP:NORG? It's been around for more than ten years, but it never seems to have had the WP:ORGDEPTH type of coverage that clearly establishes its Wikipedia notability. It also looks like members of the organization might have created the page and have been doing most of the editing. I removed a WP:NOTDIRECTORY-type section, but there's probably much more that needs to be done if notability can be established. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:35, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
