Saint Arthur of Glastonbury

Does anyone have access to any reliable sources about Saint Arthur of Glastonbury. The article we have seems confused and unsupported.— Rod talk 11:50, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Appears he may be John Arthur Thorne, known as Arthur, and martyred in 1539. All the best: Rich Farmbrough20:34, 30 July 2014 (UTC).

I initiated a peer review of Stephen I of Hungary, a GA, before its FAN. I would appreciate comments on this article about the first King of Hungary who is also a popular saint in Central Europe. Borsoka (talk) 06:16, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Listing churches on Saints' pages

I was wondering if there is a policy/opinion on whether listing (important) churches dedicated to a given saint on their wikipedia page is a good or bad idea. Best Furius (talk) 23:24, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

I would imagine it is a good idea for Saint Olaf and a bad idea for Saint Peter. All the best: Rich Farmbrough19:58, 30 July 2014 (UTC).

Local saints

Hello! I wonder; is there a special category for local saints? By local saint, I mean saints not recongised officially as saints by the Catolic curch, but still vorshiped as such locally in countries and villages in Europe in the middle ages. Also: is there a special name for such saints? --85.226.46.215 (talk) 14:38, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

OK, it's hard to determine precisely what you mean. You seem to be operating on the assumption that only the RCC recognizes saints, which is wrong, and that there were always a "central authority" regarding saints, which is also wrong. All that is required to be called a "saint" is being included in some religious calendar somewhere as one.
Given the great number of "unofficial" saints of the kind you describe, I think that it would be functionally impossible for a separate category of the kind you describe, because of the difficulties involved in determining the terms for inclusion in it. There is no special name for such people, because their official status is so often greatly variant that there's no single term which can adequately describe them all. Basically, they are included in the general categories, with occasion indications of how they are different as required. John Carter (talk) 14:54, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
I see. I believe they really are a "central authority". The Catholic curch is a well organized international organization who aknowledges some saints and not others. I would have thought that they were one category for aknowledged saints and one for non aknowledged. I am very far from an expert. But surely there is a difference. But; thank you for your answer!--85.226.46.215 (talk) 20:34, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

I agree that one formal body to define saints is both impractical and not representative of pre-world wide web religious thinking. Of the people known as saints around the world, there is a sub-section formally recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. I live in Glasnevin, Ireland and have access to some original documentation about St Mobhi and the building of a church in Glasnevin where his monastery was. The church in question is named after St. Mobhi. JEM1406a (talk) 09:41, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

I've finished my expansion and referencing of Maximilian Kolbe. I plan on WP:GAN it a few days if there are no concerns raised. As I am not a native speaker, nor an expert on Christian saints, I'd appreciate comments, reviews and edits by members of this WP. If possible, please post at the article's talk and/or WP:ECHO me. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:21, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Categorisation of High and Late Medieval saints

After the separation of the Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church, until the separation of Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, we currently have the following categories for western medieval saints:

  1. Nearly all saints are in Category:11th-century Christian saints up to Category:15th-century Christian saints (together with the eastern saints)
  2. Quite a number of western saints are in Category:German Roman Catholic saints, Category:Italian Roman Catholic saints etc. (similar to e.g. Category:Greek saints of the Eastern Orthodox Church for the eastern saints)
  3. Quite a number of western saints are in Category:Medieval German saints, Category:Medieval Italian saints etc. (similar to e.g. Category:Saints of medieval Greece for the eastern saints)
  4. A few saints are in Category:Pre-Reformation saints of the Lutheran liturgical calendar
  5. And a few saints are in Category:Pre-Reformation Anglican saints

Especially for saints who are also in the latter two categories, this may cause some category clutter in the articles. We can either keep it the way it is and take the category clutter for granted, or we can simplify things by considering all western medieval saints to be just Christian saints (without any denomination mentioned in the category). In the first option we don't need to do anything, in the second option we should propose to listify&delete the two last two categories and to rename the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran categories to include modern in the category name (i.e. these categories should only include saints who lived during or after the Reformation). This way, if we want to find medieval Roman Catholic saints, we will find them in the medieval Christian saints categories by nationality, while if we want to find pre-Reformation Lutheran and Anglican saints, there will be a list. So these are two options (keep or change) and perhaps there is a third alternative. Please share your thoughts. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:16, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

I have difficulty accepting the need for 4 and 5 above. According to the Calendar of Saints (Lutheran), Michelangelo, is commemorated! So you don't even have to be a saint to be on the calendar. Events in the life of Jesus are also commemorated. Also, the calendar appears to be confined to North America. I see nothing that says it is observed in Europe. Such people and events are best kept as a list in "Calendar of Saints (Lutheran)". Retain the post reformation saints category for Lutheran saints, but let it be assumed that all pre-reformation Christian saints are worthy of Lutheran commemoration, if that's what they want to do. Is there any pre-reformation saint that Lutherans definitively dispute as not being a saint? Some particularly nasty pope perhaps? Laurel Lodged (talk) 16:11, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
Fortunately, for this discussion at least, all saints in cat 4, Category:Pre-Reformation saints of the Lutheran liturgical calendar, are also Roman Catholic saints (or very incidentally, Jan Hus, not Roman Catholic but Eastern Orthodox). Michelangelo belongs to the parent Category:People celebrated in the Lutheran liturgical calendar, in which nearly none of the people are (Roman Catholic) saints anyway, so that's less of a problem. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:51, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Updates to List of Catholic saints article

At List of Catholic saints there seems to be an on-going flow of "non-saints" being added to the list. To help clarify the exact meaning of saint I updated that list's article & talk pages with:

1) From - Canonization

The steps to canonization that the candidates have to go through to become a saint:

2) From - Saints who are also venerated by the Eastern Orthodox Church are in Category:Christian saints by century and/or Category:Christian saints by nationality.

Catholics by stage of sainthood
Candidates Proclaimed
Servants of God Venerated Catholics Beatified people Saints
by nationality by nationality by nationality by nationality
by religious order by religious order by religious order by religious order
proclaimed by local bishop by pope proclaimer by pope proclaimer by pope proclaimer
popes popes popes popes

In reading, this WP's project page, I added these same two above in the hopes of clarity. Regards,  JoeHebda (talk)  13:49, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

For what's worth (that is in case you didn't find it yet), it's Theodore of Tarsus, Arch. of Canterbury. If you notice, in the height of his head reads "Arch" in the left, and "Can' in the right, as in Canterbury. Likewise, for Wildrid it reads Arch. Eborum (Eborensis), which is York. Set indices about Saints

Set indices are articles covering multiple subjects (of the same type) with the same name. I've encountered about 10 of these on the subject of Saints (example: Saint Alexander) and I imagine there may be more Saints with the same name (and having shared articles). Would you guys be interested in a category called Category:Set indices on Saints (part of the Category:Set indices tree?).

You could add articles to this category by tagging them with {{set index article}} (or {{SIA}}), like this: {{Set index article|Saints}}). If this sounds good, I'll propose to add the (currently non-existent) switch "Saints" over on the template's page. As I said, about 10 articles currently use that switch, but don't result in a usable category so far. Thanks! --Azertus (talk) 13:04, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

Former Catholic Saints

Shouldn’t there be a clean-up in the former catholic saints, as per the 1969 revision? Also maybe a category too, “Category:Former catholic saints”. Also, the revision removed many popes from being saints (17 in number), so a category too, “Category:Former pope saints”. In any case, for anyone who want to see to it, here are the names of the saint altogether deleted from veneration, and should not be listed as catholic saints:

Alexius of Rome, Anicetus, Bacchus, Apuleius, Barbara, Basilides, Cyrinus, Nabor and Nazarius, Boniface, Catherine, Cletus, Marcellinus, Cyprian and Justina, Dorothy, Eleutherius, Eustace and Companions, Evaristus, Faustinus and Jovita, Felix, Forty Martyrs, Hyginus, Innocent, Linus, Thecla, Lucius, Marcellus, Margaret, Maris, Martha, Abachum and Audifax, Pius, Placid and Companions, Sergius, Seven Holy Brothers, Soter, Caius, Symphorosa and her seven sons, Telephorus, Tryphon, Respicius, and Nympha, Twelve Holy Brothers, Urban, Ursula and companions, Victor, Zephyrinus.

Wolfymoza (talk) 07:24, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

It is useful to distinguish between the General Calendar and the Martyrology. I don't think any of these have been removed from the Martyrology. Thus they are not "former saints" but "saints removed from the General Calendar" Richardson mcphillips (talk) 16:02, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
"Former saint" is not even a possible thing in Catholic theology. --Trovatore (talk) 07:24, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Patron saints of ailments, illness, and dangers

Please note, Patron saints of ethnic groups and Patron saints of places are organized by their distinguishing subject. Currently, Patron saints of ailments, illness, and dangers is listed alphabetically by saint; which means one has to scan the entire listing to locate who is referenced for the subject of the article. Does anyone particularly mind if the latter be re-organized to a format something more in keeping with the aforementioned articles? (A number of editors did an excellent job on "Places".) Respectfully, Mannanan51 (talk) 03:36, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at http://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/cgi-bin/topic_points.py?banner=WikiProject_Saints

Please take a few minutes to help make these more useful to our readers.— Rod talk 18:33, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Names of some list articles and categories

As of now, there exist:

I propose that (a) List of beatified people should be renamed to List of beatified Catholics, and (b) Category:Beatified people should be renamed to Category:Beatified Catholics for consistency with the other items in this group. The progression from one group to the next seems clear and logical to me, but those two titles look out of place.

I am opening this as a discussion rather than boldly going ahead, because I'm not RC. If another editor wants to be bold, I say go for it. Narky Blert (talk) 05:04, 23 February 2018 (UTC)

Catholic saint identifications

I have just uploaded a number of pictures of stained-glass windows in a Roman Catholic church to Wikimedia Commons. There are some saints whom I can't identify, and I'd very much appreciate suggestions.

The first picture is this pair of windows. I think the one on the right is St. Ursula (wearing crown, carrying arrow), but I'm stumped as to the one on the left. The lilies, crucifix, and white surplice over black cassock are consistent with St. Francis Xavier; but this saint looks quite youthful, whereas all the other depictions I've ever seen of FX have shown him bearded.

The second picture is this pair of windows. I think the saint on the left is St. Zita (apron; donated by someone named Zita, who presumably paid for a window of her namesake saint), but I've got no idea who the martial-looking one at right is.

If it helps, the church was built by a congregation mostly German, with an Irish element. Thanks—

In the first picture, on the left is Saint Aloysius Gonzaga with lilies and crucifix. Respectfully, Tiyang (talk) 01:39, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Next to St. Aloysius is Saint Ursula, patroness of Cologne. You are correct regarding Zita; the identity of the one next to her is apparently unclear.[1] Mannanan51 (talk) 17:15, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:54, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Hindus added to this WP

It would seem, as evidenced by the slew of RM notices above, that banned user Kkm010 (talk · contribs) had a predilection to add Hindu "holy men" to our WikiProject. Therefore his contributions would merit some scrutiny. I have removed the template from several talk pages already. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Saints since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Venerated people categories

Hi, I noticed something peculiar tonight. Categories such as Category:Venerated Catholics and Category:19th-century venerated Christians, etc. are populated with saints! They should not be, IMHO, because they are for people who have been declared by the Church as "The Venerable" which is two steps away from sainthood. Once someone is beatified and/or canonized, they should go in different categories and have the "Venerated" categories removed, right? I have begun to remove the cats from known saints, but I thought I would check in here to make sure this is the right move. Thanks. Elizium23 (talk) 06:09, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Father Damien

Hello. An open invitation for anyone interested to try to take a shot at improving the above mentioned article. I have done some copy editing, trimmed superfluous prose, added citations, etc. but I'm tired of repeatedly being reverted, and not inclined to engage in some stupid edit war with someone who apparently doesn't want the page touched. Redundant and rather poor sentence structure. Reads like a second level exercise. I have better things to do.Manannan67 (talk) 23:30, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
