Hey all. I'm asking users from this WikiProject and other WikiProjects to weigh in at the talk page for a question about the War on Terrorism page: specifically at this section. Currently, the page says the war ran from "October 7, 2001 - January 20, 2009", where it ends because the Obama administration has discontinued use of the term in favor of the "Overseas Contingency Operation". However, Overseas Contingency Operation currently redirects back to War on Terrorism. The way I see it, we need to either a) create a new Overseas Contingency Operation page that encompasses everything that has gone on since 1/20/09 with the Obama administration and the war on terror, or b) Incorporate toe OCO stuff into the existing War on Terrorism page, in which case the date would be "October 7, 2001 - present". I personally can see merit to both ideas, but I'm not the expert, so I'm seeking input from people more qualified than me to see if we can develop a consensus. I'm hoping we can War on Terrorism page: keep the discussion here so the discussion doesn't split into multiple discussions on multiple WikiProject talk pages. Thanks all! — Hunter Kahn 16:46, 12 January 2010 (UTC
...How can you call the attacks on Christian churches in Iraq "unprovoked" without adding that the attack On Mosques, as well as the entire country and people of Iraq, also "unprovoked"? You'll pardon me but the attack on the churches seems to have been PROVOKED by the UNprovoked attack on Iraq and Islam. It is quite natural that a minority within a country being attacked by foreign co-religionsts of that minority are going to suffer justifiable retribution, simply because they are the nearest thing at hand...much as anyone looking "Arab" was attacked in the United States, because Americans couldn't get their hands on those doing the actual fighting, so they attacked the next best thing. Why WOULDN'T Iraqis want to attack the churches who preach the religion of their tormentors? Before anyone says I am condoning such actions, I am not. It is terrible, it is reprehensible, but it certainly isn't a mystery, or something to be "shocked" about, as if we were born yesterday. If you want to condemn such actions then condome first anf foremeost those who caused these things to happen, who caused Iraqis to despise a religion, with outlets in their own country, which uses the same Jesus to justify their jihad. Unreferenced living people articles bot
User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.
The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Iraq/Archive 5/Unreferenced BLPs<<<
If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.
Thank you.
- Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Iraq/Archive 5/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
- There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.

Help request
Hi folks, you could help us at WP:TOL. We have no photo of the Mesopotamian Crow, and I have seen some on the Web and they look beautiful (by crow standards). Their plumage is really singular, and it would make a very valuable addition to several articles. They're the local birds that look like a "clean" Commons:Category:Corvus cornix, and they are almost endemic to Iraq.
So, if any of you ppl has a chance of taking a photo of one, we'd be very grateful.
(Also, if anyone has a chance to photograph an Oriental Darter in Iray, do so. Any proof of its existence is valuable in general, and it might yield a honorable mention in a scientific study..)
Thanks! Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 21:58, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Added articles on Yazidi and Assyrian militias; any other minority militias to add?
I was working on some articles about militias and "self-denfence forces" of religious minority groups in various countries, and ran across a couple interesting ones in Iraq:
- Malik Al-Tawus Troop, Yazidi self-defence force [wrote this article myself from news coverage]
- Qaraqosh Protection Committee, Assyrian group. Pre-existing article, but I added categories to tie it in to trees
I've added both of these to the template "Armed Iraqi Groups in the Iraq War and Civil War", down in the bottom right corner:
Insurgents | Now-defunct Baathist rebels and insurgents | Military of Iraq and Police | Militias and others | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
|
|
Shia militia
|
Sunni militias
Kurdish militias
Minority militias
|
Are there any other minority militias that should also be added? I already checked on the Sabean/Mandaean sect, but they're evidently pacifists. Hope folks find these additions interesting, and that maybe we can drum up a few others. MatthewVanitas (talk) 08:06, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Iraq articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Iraq articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

The article Muhammed Ibrahim al-Juraissey has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Does not appear to be notable.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Pburka (talk) 03:59, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

As-Salamu Alaykum WikiProject Iraq.
Stumbled across the Arab tribes in Iraq list, and after a desperate attempt to understand the complexities of the subject have managed only to create a couple of links (to individual tribe articles). Beyond that, I'm struggling to make any sensible edits which would assist bring the list up to Wikipedia standards. I've also noticed that it is a list which has been prone to drive-by vandalism in the past, so without even considering the need to bring it up to standard, it could do with a deep review by someone knowledgeable in the subject.
Thank you in advance. --Haruth (talk) 23:57, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Shabab
There's a television channel in Iraq that was called "Shabab" - Uday Hussein owned it, and it showed pirated Western films. The al-Sadr movement had put a fatwa against watching the network. After the US overthrew Saddam, soldiers believed that Iraqis wanted to watch U.S. films, but were not aware that they already watched U.S. films on Shabab (Cockburn, Patrick. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Hello,
This WikiProject was recently created and I'm trying to determine if there is any level of interest in it. Right now, this WikiProject consists of just one editor. I'm notifying several related WikiProjects in order to gauge whether there is sufficient interest in this one that it should be allowed to grow or be deleted. Thank you. Liz Read! Draft:Arshad al-Salihi - help with references needed
Hello Iraq experts. This draft article is about a member of parliament in Iraq, so it's a notable subject. Because it's a biography of a living person, it should probably have some references about his imprisonment before going live. These may not be in English. Can anyone help?—Anne Delong (talk) 10:03, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Anne Delong: There are lots of news articles in Arabic quoting him, but I could only find one reference to his imprisonment. It's from a Turkmen site so it is not wholly neutral, but it confirms the facts in the article in general. It doesn't mention Abu Ghraib, though, and it says that he was imprisoned for ten years, not nine. I've added it to the draft, hope that helps. --Cerebellum (talk) 23:52, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, Cerebellum. I found a couple of English references about his recent activities, and moved the draft to mainspace, at Arshad al-Salihi.—Anne Delong (talk) 14:49, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Mesopotamia is in Disarray!
A lot of the main articles for major historical periods (Sumeria, Neo-Babylon) are just not up to snuff. I am an independent student of antiquity, but my knowledge of Mesopotamia is very rudimentary at the moment, and wouldn't be able to make any major core contributions to the articles beyond correcting errors & verifying. I am making this a call out to those who can contribute to please do so! There are a ton of things to be verified, re-organized, and expanded. Thank you! 2602:30A:2CCF:C770:7582:2B4:C6B4:72D0 (talk) 21:29, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Iraq War
Recently consensus was reached in this discussion to restructure the Iraq War article into an broader article for the entire war from 2003 to the present and to move Iraqi insurgency (2003–11) to Iraq War (2003–11) so that page can serve as the article for the 2003–11 phase of the war.
There is much work that needs to be done. Not just the changes to these two articles agreed to in the discussion. But also all the pages that will be affected by these changes (such as 2003 invasion of Iraq, Iraqi insurgency (2003–06), Sectarian violence in Iraq (2006–07), Iraqi insurgency (2011–13), Iraqi Civil War (2014–present), Military intervention against ISIL, American-led intervention in Iraq (2014–present), Iranian intervention in Iraq (2014–present), Syrian civil war, ect.). New article created
After numerous discussions and consensus to create one, an umbrella article for the entire Iraq conflict (2003–present) has finally been created. However, it needs a great deal of work and I am seeking help in expanding it. Charles Essie (talk) 14:58, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:42, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
RfC on election/referendum naming format
An RfC on moving the year from the end to the start of article titles (e.g. South African general election, 2019 to 2019 South African general election) has been reopened for further comment, including on whether a bot could be used move the articles if it closed in favour of the change: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (government and legislation)#Proposed change to election/referendum naming format. We need this WikiProject back!
How did WikiProject Iraq become inactive and why is it still inactive? It's needed now more than ever as we are continuing to witness a truly historic period of Iraq's history. Not to mention the fact that the number of articles within the scope of WikiProject Iraq that are in need of work is astronomical. Can someone tell me what's going on? A new newsletter directory is out!
A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
why are a lot of early Prime ministers not a part of this Project?
Jamil al-Midfai, Ali Jawdat al-Aiyubi and Taha al-Hashimi and some other prime ministers in the kingdom period are not a part of this project, is there a reason for this or were they just forgotten? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Valonad (talk • contribs) 16:52, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

Reorganize Wikipedia:WikiProject Ottoman Empire as a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries?
Dear users of this WikiProject:
At Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Former_countries#Make_WikiProject_Ottoman_Empire_a_task_force_of_Wikipedia:WikiProject_Former_countries? I have left a proposal to convert Wikipedia:WikiProject Ottoman Empire into a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries. Notability check and possible DYN opportunity
Ghassan Hamdan is a stub right now. It was created in 2007 by Sangak (who is still editing) and is currently being updated by Alikindeel.
If the person is not notable, it needs to be deleted.
If the person IS notable, this looks like a good opportunity to get it on the Main page as a Did You Know? item if it is expanded at least 5-fold and reaches the minimum count of 1,500 characters of prose. Since it's under 300 characters, it will automatically meet the 5-fold increase when it reaches 1500 characters. Only the 7 days of work prior to the DYN nomination "count" so if the expansion is spread over more than a week, it may not be eligible. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 20:53, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
re-evaluate Haider Alnuaimi article
Hello, hope you all are doing well. Can you re-evaluate Haider Alnuaimi article? As you see it evaluated before I finished the article and it deserves better evaluation for these reasons: 1- few journalists who started from 2003 until now are still working. 2- He is the only one who representative of the Iraqi media in the program THE VOICE by MBC Group for all four versions. 3- He is the only one who representative of the Iraqi media in the ARAB IDOL program by MBC Group for all four versions. 3- He has prepared many programs affecting the economic and political situation in Iraq like Albab program and the Sasah program. 4- He is the founder and creator of the idea of Al-hilal Golden Award, which is an annual festival that is held during Ramadhan to celebrate the best Iraqi drama and programs shown on the Iraqi satellite channels. all the points above have a source in the article thank you --Pro95mustafa (talk) 11:10, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol
- New Page Patrol needs experienced volunteers
- New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles, including Iraq related articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
- If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions and review our instructions page. You can apply for the user-right HERE. --John B123 (talk) 15:05, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

- Hey, I was the lead operations advisor for the Iraqi Army brigade that took over Kharma, Nasser Wa' Salaam, southern Fallujah, etc in 05-06. I see that we were sort of mentioned in the Al Kharma article...but not. It was quoted as the "most dangerous place in Iraq in 2005-06." I knew we were busy and took lots of casualties, but didn't realize that it was "the worst." Anyway, I remember all the events noted with Marines while I was there and Fumento, who was often quoted in the article, was imbed with us. I'd like to add a few things....could quote from my small book that I wrote with the general who was in charge of all of the advisors...but here's the thing, I don't want some choad to roll in stating that it's all "original" and delete it. The current commandant, Berger, was our RCT commander and he was the one who decided to put us in and keep Marines on periphery (although we all worked together). Since you seem to be cool with Wiki, who do I have to please to keep it on the page? Pzrschreck (talk) 02:53, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon
Hello WikiProject Iraq:
WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!
Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!
